Introduction

In a perfect world, (as it was prior to the fall of man) violence, plane crashes, floods and other disasters would not occur. The Bible teaches us that God created man to live, not die. Disease and illness would be non-existent. Emergency medical services would not have a basis for function. Unfortunately, the world is not a perfect place. Man’s sin brought about sickness, disease and illness, (the first cousins of sin), and death. “For through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned’’ (Romans 5:12 NAS). God told His chosen people, the Israelites, that, if you get sick, I’ll heal you. If you are walking in obedience, I won’t even let you get sick at all! This was His preventive medicine, which I’ve heard it called, God’s “Gos-Pill”. Sickness, from the first mention of the Jewish healing covenant, is directly rooted in disobedience, when one walks outside of the law of God. Man fell, by choice, bringing about evil / sin: • Evil and sin: When God made the world, He declared it to be “very good” (Genesis 1:31 “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning-the sixth day.” NIV). But evil entered this perfect world when Adam and Eve chose to disobey God (Genesis 3:1 “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made.” He said to the woman, “Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" 2 The woman said to the serpent, We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' 4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.” NIV). Genesis reveals the tragic consequences of that choice, known as “the fall”. It shows that sin, gives people the terrible ability to misuse every good thing, brings shame and guilt, unleashes trouble in all human relationships, and, eventually results in death. Jesus died for you and me, by choice, bringing about Salvation / Redemption: • Salvation and redemption (Genesis 3, 12): God’s ultimate response to sin was to overcome it through Jesus’ death, on the cross. But, God’s plan, to rescue His world and its people, began immediately after the fall. His words to Adam and Eve, after they sinned, hinted at what He would do (Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel”). The rest of Genesis tells how He began to work through Abraham and his descendants, to bless all the people of the earth (Genesis 12:3 “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you”). Genesis shows that God’s will, purpose, and grace continue to operate even in this fallen world.

THE DEATH-DEALING SIN, THE LIFE-GIVING GIFT The Message translation, of the New Testament by Eugene Peterson, puts it this way when we read Romans 5:12-21. “You know the story of how Adam landed us in the dilemma we’re in—first sin, then death, and no one exempt from either sin or death. That sin disturbed relations with God in everything and everyone, but the extent of the disturbance was not clear until God spelled it out in detail to Moses. So death, this huge abyss separating us from God, dominated the landscape from Adam to Moses. Even those who didn’t sin precisely as Adam did by disobeying a specific command of God still had to experience this termination of life, this separation from God. But Adam, who got us into this, also points ahead to the One who will get us out of it. Yet the rescuing gift is not exactly parallel to the death-dealing sin. If one man’s sin put crowds of people at the dead-end abyss of separation from God, just think what God’s gift poured through one man, Jesus Christ, will do! There’s no comparison between that deathdealing sin and this generous, life-giving gift. The verdict on that one sin was the death sentence; the verdict on the many sins that followed was this wonderful life sentence. If death got the upper hand through one man’s wrongdoing, can you imagine the breathtaking recovery life makes, sovereign life, in those who grasp with both hands this wildly extravagant life-gift, this grand setting-everything-right, that the one man Jesus Christ provides? Here it is in a nutshell: Just as one person did it wrong and got us in all this trouble with sin and death, another person did it right and got us out of it. But more than just getting us out of trouble, he got us into life! One man said no to God and put many people in the wrong; one man said yes to God and put many in the right. All that passing laws against sin did was produce more lawbreakers. But sin didn’t, and doesn’t, have a chance in competition with the aggressive forgiveness we call grace. When it’s sin versus grace, grace wins hands down. All sin can do is threaten us with death, and that’s the end of it. Grace, because God is putting everything together again through the Messiah, invites us into life—a life that goes on and on and on, world without end.” The results of Adam’s transgression, of God’s Word, was that, by his sin he brought about sickness, disease, illness and death, on all human beings. But, when Christ enters our life, He regenerates our heart and sets us free, to choose what is true and righteous. Thus, we in EMS will always have people dying to ride with us in our ambulances, bringing us to the point that EMT’s and other EMS workers are a vital part of this world’s health systems. With the background that we have in medicine, we have studied the heart extensively. My goal is to present a perspective of the human heart, that many may not have taken into account; cardiology as it pertains to the Canon of Scripture, accepted by Christians, known as the WORD of GOD. As we go through this study, we will start off each section in the physical realm. Then, we will turn to the spiritual side, as I share what GOD has revealed to me. As an Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT-P), I have come to learn that, everything that I do can be directly related to GOD Himself and, increases my beliefs as a Born-again, Spirit-filled Christian. 10

One of the verses, that keeps me humble, is Hebrews 9:27 “and as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:…”. Knowing that one day I will be judged, for everything I have said and done, makes me think twice about what I do and say. In studying the Bible, I have come to see GOD as the greatest cardiologist. The WORD of GOD actually paints a beautiful picture for us of Yahweh, as a great physician, by the use of His compound names. The WORD of GOD has several compound names for Jehovah GOD, in the Old Testament; one of those names is Jehovah-Rapha. Jehovah-Rapha means I am the Lord GOD who heals you. I believe that Jehovah-Rapha wants to perform open-heart surgery on each of us, so, we would be like his Son, Jesus. All that is required is that we ask GOD personally to do it. Our prayer at SoulMedic Ministries is that, all who read Christian Paramedical Review (CPR) will allow GOD to perform heart surgery on them. GOD is willing to perform a heart transplant, if we are willing to pay the price; the WORD of GOD says in Ezekiel 18:31 “Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit:”. GOD also said in Ezekiel 36:26 “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.” GOD is the great physician, and, He sees us as His individual case studies in cardiology. Is your name written in God’s cardiology case study reviews called “The Book of Life”? If your case is not in “The Book of Life” it can be, Revelation 20:11-15 “And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” No appointments necessary, and GOD has room for you. GOD is always on CALL 24 hours a day / 7 days a week / 365 days a year.

Chapter 1

Cardiology and the Living God! As pre-hospital medical providers, the heart holds a special meaning in all our lives. The heart is synonymous with love, but, it has many other meanings, as well. What other word, in the English language, do we know that has as many meanings as the word “heart”? Let us take a look at a few examples:

Have a heart – to be merciful Change of heart – to change one’s mind Know by heart – to memorize something Broken heart - to feel emptiness Heartfelt – to have strong feelings toward something

Cry your heart out – to grieve Heavy heart – to feel sadness Heart set on - to desire something strongly Have your heart in the right place – to be kind

Certainly, no other bodily organ elicits this kind of response. When was the last time you had a heavy pancreas?i “Heart” is also used in many compound words; here are just a few examplesii: Heart-appalling Heart-breaking Heart-cheering Heart-chilled Heart-expanding

Heart-free Heart-hardened Heart-purifying Heart-searching Heart-sickening

Heart-sinking Heart-stirring Heart-touching Heart-wearing Whole-heart

Heart-wounding Heart-wringing

Now, let’s look a little bit deeper into how we perceive our hearts. Our heart is the “seat of our affections” and “sensibilities”; this can be established collectively in our community and nation or, individually in our sphere of influence. Our hearts can be filled with love, hate, joy, grief, courage and, many other feelings, that GOD has created for his children to experience. The human heart is the seat of our understanding and, the throne of our will. Our heart then is the center of our moral life and character. Our heart is where moral affections and character are born, established, and reinforced. We know, from our careers, that we cannot judge a book by its cover. Many people tend to look people up and down and, get a pre-conceived idea, before they can even get to know the person. Studies have shown that, within the first 5 seconds of seeing someone, we make judgments on a subconscious level, based on what we see, hear and sense. 13

The next five minutes, we shall justify our evaluation of that first 5 seconds. GOD, on the other hand, “is not all together like us.” Samuel reveals to us that, “Man looks at the outward appearance”, in 1 Samuel 16:7 “but the LORD looks on the heart.”iii The WORD of GOD is the basis where we should build, establish and reinforce our character. Let’s look at the WORD of GOD and, see how GOD looks at others, so that we can introspectively look at our lives, to see if we need to change. GOD called Samuel, the prophet of the Lord, to go and anoint the new king over Israel, (1 Samuel 3:20). Samuel obeyed and went where GOD told him to go. Samuel went to the home of Jesse. There, Samuel requested that all of Jesse’s sons, one by one, walk before him. After Jesse had his sons walk before Samuel, Samuel was not satisfied with the selection, and, Samuel knew GOD had told him that he was to anoint the next King, 1 Samuel 16:7. It was not until Samuel asked Jesse if he had any other sons, that David was brought out of the fields. David was Jesse’s youngest son; in man’s eyes, he was only a ‘dirty, smelly shepherd’. However, at the precise moment that David came before Samuel, the Lord spoke to Samuel and said, “Arise, anoint him.” Man’s tradition is to choose the first born, but, GOD refused the first born and, all the other sons of Jesse, because of their heart. Proverbs 25:3 says that “the heart of kings is unsearchable,” David’s heart was unsearchable to man, but, GOD knows the heart of all of us. Jeremiah 17:10 says “I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” GOD will reward all of us according to our ways. The heart is the center of our natural and spiritual life. This includes the open and hidden emotional, intellectual and moral activities of man. Our heart is the home of our conscience (Romans 2:15) and, is naturally wicked (Genesis 8:21). If we do not change the default setting of being naturally wicked, it will contaminate our whole life and character. Matthew 12:34 says, “for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” We can tell what our heart believes, by what we say, especially when the pressure is on us. Jesus said in Matthew 15:18-20 that “those things that proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile a man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts…”. That is why our hearts must be renewed. GOD said in Ezekiel 36:26 that, “a new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.” In Ezekiel 11:19-21, GOD tells us why we need a heart of flesh and not of stone, “And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh: That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God. But [as for them] whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations, I will recompense their way upon their own heads, saith the Lord GOD.” Before any of us can willingly obey GOD, we should pray, as David prayed in Psalms 51:10-14 “create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me [with thy] free spirit. [Then] will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: [and] my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.” The regeneration process starts at the time of our salvation, and, the process of salvation works on our heart.iv

The Heart As We Know It! In the Physical/Natural realm, the heart is a hollow, muscular organ, which, by contracting rhythmically, maintains the circulation of the blood, within the circulatory system of our body.v To move all this blood, a pump is necessary. “This is accomplished by a four chambered pump composed of specialized muscle tissue, connective tissue and, an electrical conduction system. The interior of the heart is lined by the endocardium” vi: the membrane, that lines the cavities of the heart and, forms part of the heart valves. Epicardium: The inner lining of the serous pericardium, lying directly on the surface of the heart, forming the outer most layer of the heart wall. Myocardium: The middle, muscular layer of the heart wall, enclosed between the epicardium and endocardium. “The heart is surrounded by a fibrous, double-walled, pericardial sac that contains a proteinaceous, lubricating fluid between the layers. The upper, thin walled chambers of the heart, the atria, are separated from the lower, more muscular chambers, the ventricles, by valves that open and close, in a coordinated manner, to efficiently pump blood to the lungs, for gas exchange and, to the rest of the body.”i

Your heart is located between your lungs, in the middle of your chest, behind and, slightly to the left of your sternum. A normal heart weighs between 7 to 15 ounces and, is a little larger than the size of your fist. The average heartbeat is 72 beats per minute. In the course of one day, the heart beats over 100,000 times, pumping an equivalent of 2,000 gallons of blood. In one year, the heart beats almost 38 million times, and, by the time we reach 70 years old, our heart will have beat about 2.5 billion times!vii The heart, in all of its medical complexity and, its poetic imagery, is “just a pump”, or, to be exact, two pumps. The right and left sides, of the heart, have separate functions. The right side of the heart collects oxygen-poor blood from the body and, pumps it to the lungs where it picks up oxygen and, releases carbon dioxide. The left side of the heart then collects oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and, pumps it to the body, so that the cells, throughout your body, have the oxygen they need to function properly. 15

Chapter 1 - Cardiology and the Living God! When our hearts are not functioning properly, the whole body suffers due to “SHOCK”. What is shock? Shock is “inadequate oxygenation of our body tissues, at the cellular level”.

God’s View Of The Human Heart And Cardiology In the King James Version (KJV) we find that the English word, “heart”, is found 946 times in 823 different verses. There are 724 verses in the Old Testament and 99 in the New Testament. Frequently, the translators of the bible would interpret “heart,” for several different Hebrew and Greek words. Sometimes, the translators would use the English word “heart” for the Greek and Hebrew words “mind”, “will”, “conscience”, “emotions”, “soul affections”, “personality”, “character” or, “human nature.” The following are a few examples of the word interpreted “heart” from different Hebrew and Greek wordsviii: 1) Mind: a) Exodus 35:5 “Take ye from among you an offering unto the LORD: whosoever [is] of a willing heart, let him bring it, an offering of the LORD; gold, and silver, and brass,” b) 1 Kings 3:9 “Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?” c) 1 Kings 4:29 “And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that [is] on the sea shore.” d) Romans 10:6 “But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down [from above]:)” 2) Will/Conscience: a) 1 Samuel 24:5 “And it came to pass afterward, that David’s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.” b) Job 27:6 “My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach [me] so long as I live.” 3) Emotions/ Soul Affections: a) Deuteronomy 19:6 “Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he [was] not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.” b) Deuteronomy 20:8 “And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man [is there that is] fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart faint as well as his heart.” c) Deuteronomy 28:47 “Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all [things];” d) Psalm 4:7 “Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time [that] their corn and their wine increased.” e) Psalm 13:2 “How long shall I take counsel in my soul, [having] sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?”

Chapter 1 - Cardiology and the Living God! 4) Personality/Character or the Human Nature: a) Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart [is] deceitful above all [things], and desperately wicked: who can know it?” b) Mark 7:20-23 “And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.” The word “heart” is also translated with the holistic view of a person’s center, of all their physical, emotional, intellectual, and moral activities. “Heart” can also be translated in English, as the center of something. Exodus 15:8 says “And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, [and] the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.” We see in Exodus 15:8 that the translators used the word “heart of the sea,” which also could be said “center of the sea.” We also see another example in Matthew 12:40 which says, “For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” As a physical organ, the “heart” is the center of our physical life; the pump that moves our blood throughout our body. Take a moment and ponder the futility of the body, without a heart, in these two verses. 1 Samuel 25:37 says “But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became [as] a stone.” Proverbs 14:30 says “A sound heart [is] the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.”ix In some translations of the Bible, the word “heart” can occur over one thousand times. Other anthropological terms are mentioned, at the least, 10 times less. The word “head” is mentioned only 54 times. The word “body” is mentioned 113 times. The word “hand” is mentioned 152 times. The words “bowels”, “eye”, “hair”, “arm”, “leg”, “chest”, “ear”, “tongue”, and “finger” combined, only mentioned about 100 times. The word “heart” can therefore be said to be the most common anthropological term used in the Scripture.x In the English language, we have two words that help us describe something, that is not human, in terms of human characteristics, and, the ability to place an ascription of human feelings to something not human. Anthropomorphism is an interpretation of what is not human or personal, in terms of human or personal characteristics. Anthropopathism is the ascription of human feelings to something not human.

Here are a few examples of anthropomorphism for Yahweh, found in the WORD of GOD: 1. Yahweh with feet – Exodus 24:10 “And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness” 2. Yahweh with hands – John 10:29 “My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.” 3. Yahweh with a face – Matthew 18:10 “Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.” 4. Yahweh with a heart – Hosea 11:8 “How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.” Here are a few examples of anthropopathism of Yahweh, found in the WORD of GOD: 1. Jealousy – Exodus 20:5 “Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me” 2. Anger – Psalms 77:9 “Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah” 3. Love – Jonah 4:2 “And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.” 4. Mercy – Psalms 103:8 “The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.”viii We will now transition from English translations, to the original language of the manuscripts. The original manuscripts of the Canon of Scriptures are written in Hebrew for the Old Testament and, Greek for the New Testament. Below are the Hebrew and Greek words that translators use, at times, for our English word “heart”. The bold type numbers on these pages are the Strong’s Reference numbersxi also seen in Hebrew and Greek dictionaries. (Cardiac is the English derivative of Kardia) The heart, thoughts, feelings or mind, the breath of life, a living being, a living soul. Your will, desires, affections, the human soul is regarded as a moral being designed for everlasting life. Chapter 2 - The Heart Change

Chapter 2 The Heart Change Physiology is the study of life, specifically, how cells, tissues, and organisms function. So, physiology of the human heart is to look at how it works, from the normal blood flow through the heart, to the electrical impulses, that the heart generates itself and, uses to cause the heart muscles to contract. Now, let us take a quick look at how God made our hearts to work physically: De-oxygenated blood from the body enters the right side of the heart, into the right atrium through two veins: The Superior Vena Cava (SVC) and Inferior Vena Cava (IVC). The SVC collects blood from the upper half of the body. The IVC collects blood from the lower half of the body. Blood leaves the SVC and the IVC and enters the Right Atrium (RA). When the RA contracts, blood flows through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle (RV). Contraction of the ventricle (serves to pump blood to the lungs for the exchange of gases) then closes the tricuspid valve and forces open the pulmonary valve. Blood flows into the pulmonary artery. This branches immediately, carrying blood to the right and left lungs. Here the blood gives up carbon dioxide and takes on a fresh supply of oxygen. The capillary beds of the lungs are drained by venules that are the tributaries of the pulmonary veins. Four pulmonary veins, two draining each lung, carry oxygenated blood to the left atrium (LA) of the heart. When the LA contracts, blood travels “through the mitral valve to the thicker, walled, left ventricle (LV) that serves to forcefully pump blood through the aortic valve into the aorta” and, to the rest of the body. This happens every time that your heart beats. “The heart beats in an orderly sequence due to the characteristics of the heart muscle and, a specialized electrical conduction system. Cardiac muscle is automatic; meaning that the tissue will spontaneously contract, at a periodic rate, that is without nervous or hormonal influences. It is also syncytial, meaning that, if one cell has an action potential, the electrical change will be transmitted to the others around it, via gap junctions, and, the cells will contract as a unit.” The heart contracts in two stages. In the first stage, the Right and Left Atria contract at the same time, pumping blood to the Right and Left Ventricles. Then, the Ventricles contract together to propel blood out of the heart (systole). Then the heart muscle relaxes (diastole) before the next heartbeat. This allows blood to fill up the heart again, being ready to start the whole process over again. i

Chapter 3 The Human MIND Were you aware that the path that blood flows through the HEART depicts a picture of the way we become a Born-Again Christian?

Blood flows from the body: To the Superior and Inferior Vena Cava: (Symbolically the good and bad thoughts) In this world we have only two types of influence on our thought life as seen from Colossians 1:9-13 “For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of GOD; Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:”. The two types of influence on our thought life are good and bad thoughts. Using symbolism for the superior vena cava and inferior vena cava, the superior vena cava represents the good, Godly thoughts. The inferior vena cava represents the bad, demonic thoughts. These influences are both spiritual and physical ramifications and are bombarding us day-in and day-out. We have a choice to choose the superior or inferior thoughts in our life. The choice we make ultimately will determine the outcome of our decisions and actions. Notice Romans 6:16, “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?”

Then to the Right Atrium (Symbolically the Mind): Romans 8:5-7 “For those who are according to the flesh and are controlled by its unholy desires set their minds on and pursue those things which gratify the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit and are controlled by the desires of the Spirit set their minds on and seek those things which gratify the [Holy] Spirit. Now the mind of the flesh [which is sense and reason without the Holy Spirit] is death [death that comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter). But the mind of the [Holy] Spirit is life and [soul] peace [both now and forever]. ...because the mind of the flesh [with its carnal thoughts and purposes] is hostile to God, for it does not submit itself to God’s Law; indeed it cannot.” (AMP) Sometimes, the study of psychology, as a scientific field, poses problems for the Christian; yet, when integrated with the psychological principles, as demonstrated in God’s Word, it offers the opportunity of opening new insights, regarding Christian experiences and understanding of the Biblical truths. The following illustration may serve to help underscore this principle: The sulfas were the first antibiotics to be developed; they are actually, completely man-made. Sulfas can stop bacteria from growing, but, they cannot actually kill the bacteria. They dissolve the hard, protective coating around the germ so that, the white corpuscles are able to kill the germ.xii The leukocytes (white blood corpuscles) wage continuous war with unwanted visitors, such as bacteria, viruses or fungi or, even abnormal cells of the body. The leukocytes include genuine destruction cells, which trace and eliminate foreign bacteria. xiii In a similar fashion, psychology can provide the tools used by God, to penetrate more efficiently, and, dissolve the defensive shell, that people use to insulate themselves from Biblical truths, and, from their fellowmen. When this shell is broken, the Spirit of God is able to perform His work in their lives. Each problem, raised by life and psychology, has its answer in the Word of God. These 34

answers should be sought and found, and, when they are, along with personal application, the normal, spiritual life, that God has for each of us, will become evident.xiv 2 Corinthians 4:4 “In whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of GOD, should shine to them.” The greatest battlefield we fight in is in our mind. Here, the battle is waged between the Spirit and the soul. I have read that, when emotion pulsates, the mind becomes deceived, and conscience is denied its standard of judgment.xv The mind is the control panel for our eyes, and our ears, and is the center of our appetites. Our mind is the place where we make recollections, we do our reasonings, make conscious mental choices and, store information. Our ego is expressed by our organized, conscious and unconscious mental activities and attitudes. Anything, that influences our life, starts in our mind with thoughts either Godly, righteous or demonic, sinful. 2 Corinthians 10:5 clearly portrays this struggle, “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of GOD, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;”. All sin begins in the mind (heart). Proverbs 4:23 says “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it [are] the issues of life.” Matthew 15:19 aptly says, “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:”. We think of the sinful act before we commit it and, then we have sinned. James 1:15 warns that lust “brings forth sin, and sin when it’s conceived brings forth death”. xvi Your mind is the place where we respond to the hearing of the WORD of GOD. The WORD of GOD is presented to us in many forms. We are presented the WORD of GOD by way of reading the Bible. We are presented the WORD of GOD by hearing the scriptures by the spoken voice, either through preaching/teaching or, reading the Bible out loud. Another powerful way, that the WORD of GOD is presented to us, is through a personal testimony of the goodness of GOD. Perhaps, the greatest impact, on our life or the lives of others, is when the WORD of GOD is presented to us by someone displaying GOD’s nature, LOVE. All of the forms presented show us how GOD diligently longs to reveal himself to us. When we make Jesus Christ the Lord of our life, a dramatic, positive change will take place. By making Jesus Christ, the LORD of our life, is to make Jesus the BOSS of our life. Making Jesus the LORD of our life makes the stand that we are no longer the owner of our life. Let’s look at this in a way that we all can understand. Think about all that goes through our mind, when we respond to an EMS call. We have to decide which bags to take, and, what type of call it is; A call, from someone who has fallen, takes us through various scenarios; what the person fell from? What caused the person to fall? Was it a Heart attack (MI)? Slip?, Trip?, or, just a fall? How far did this person fall? - What did they fall on? Or, is the call a chest pain call? Is it cardiac related or chest wall pain? MI? Anxiety related? Patient’s past medical history! All, of those plus some, go through our minds while responding to the scene. What is for lunch? Where did my partner get his driver’s license? Don’t people know what to do when they see lights and hear sirens? Then you are on the scene and, within seconds you know if this is a true emergency or not. From the moment we walk unto the scene, our mind is cataloging everything in its surroundings. In our mind, we then ascertain if the scene is safe or unsafe, types of injury or sickness, number of patients, and the number of rescuers needed to do the job. Our mind is being bombarded by information, that requires immediate response, in potentially, 35

life,-determining seconds. The response, we execute, is not based on emotions. Our response is preceded by the training that is deep in our minds and hearts. Often, we see things that make our emotions rise sharply. When our emotions soar, we have to rely on our heart and mind, to push us to do the right thing. In this field, we are trained to do a primary and secondary survey, on all the patients that we treat. The primary survey is a reaction, from the training, that we have to save a life. The secondary is mapping out the proper course of patient treatment, that the patient needs and, acting upon the assessment. All of this happens, in split seconds, in our minds. Therefore, we choose what we are going to do, in our minds and, then send that thought to our will to carry it out. The following two verses of the Bible keep me at peace, when going through emotionally, disturbing situations. Philippians 2:5 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:” and Philippians 4:7-8 “And the peace of GOD, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

To the Right Ventricle (Symbolically the Will): Symbolically, we will set the right ventricle, as the will of an individual. The will is power to make a conscience choice. The will is the power to make decisions. The subconscious has powerful influence in determining our will.xvii The subconscious is aptly portrayed by the old cartoons, where we see the little red devil, with a pitch-fork in hand on one shoulder and, an angel with the halo on the other; both sides trying to get us to choose to do either good or bad. Life’s choices are up to us; we have complete responsibility over the choice we execute. We can choose/will to follow GOD or choose/will to follow our own ways. With our will, we express our desires and determinations to set goals and carry them out. While on duty, we have a duty to act. However, while off-duty, we are not obligated to act. We are not obligated to stop at the scene of an emergency while off-duty. So, why do we still do it? We still stop to help others, in their time of need, because that is who we are. Those, in the profession of Police, Fire, or EMS services, are the type of people that choose/will daily to help other people. Many times, we think of the other person’s needs, before taking into account our own personal safety. If you have been in the field of Emergency Services long, you have either heard someone else say (or, have said it yourself) the following statement: “Fire/EMS is not just a job to me… it is my life! Being a Firefighter, EMT, EMT-I, or EMT-Paramedic is my identity; it is who I am.” xviii The Good Samaritan Lawxix is provided for people, who take time to help in emergency situations. The Good Samaritan Law is a 37

Chapter 4 - OUR WILL

series of laws, designed to provide limited legal protection for citizens and, some health-care personnel, when they are administering emergency care. The North Carolina Good Samaritan Law states “Any person who, in good faith, renders emergency medical care or assistance to an injured person, at the scene of an accident or, other emergency, without the expectation of receiving or, intending to receive compensation, from such injured person, for such service, shall not be liable in civil damages, for any act or omission, not constituting gross negligence, in the course of such care or assistance.”xx How many times have we gone to an assault call and, found out that we were the first that responded on the scene. In these times, not waiting for Police to get there, we proceed in the middle of an unknown situation. Then, only to find out that the gun and knife club were still having their meeting and, now you are in the middle of it with no where to hide, except behind the wheel of our unit, or, whatever else we could find. That is why, in most EMS systems, the EMS and Fire crews are strongly encouraged to follow their department’s SOG/SOP’s. The SOG/SOP’s now require us to stand-by and wait for Police to assure that the scene is safe. We make choices in the emergency services field, each and every day, that could impact our personal lives, for the good or the bad. Taking into account the natural realm of the will, in the spiritual realm, the Holy Spirit allows us to see, hear, sense and feel His presence. The Holy Spirit is calling out to us to choose GOD’s will. Then, somehow or somewhere we get the chance to see or hear the Gospel preached. At the moment we are presented the Gospel, the Holy Spirit brings conviction on us, to get us to repent from our sins. It is at that point, in our mind, that we become aware of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit reveals to us what Jesus did for us on the Cross of Calvary. The Holy Spirit then continues to pull and tug on our heart. He calls us to come until we choose/will to turn our life over to Jesus, to be our Lord, Savior and, the new boss of your life. Joshua 24:15 “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” It is at that point, that your spiritual blood goes to your lungs for a spiritual gas exchange.

To the Lungs: (Symbolically the exchange that took place for us at the Cross) In the physical, our lungs are the place where different types of gases are exchanged in our body. In the lungs, the blood gives up carbon dioxide and takes on a fresh supply of oxygen. Symbolically, in the spiritual realm, the Holy Spirit guides and leads us, to the revelation that we are a sinner. Romans 3:23 describes all humanity by saying “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of GOD;” and that we have a personal need for salvation from the penalty of our sins. Romans 6:23 tells us what the penalty of sins brings, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of GOD is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” and Matthew 9:13 “But go and learn what that means, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” The only way, to get a pardon from our sins is to repent of our sins. We repent of our sins by asking GOD to forgive us and make us a new creature (Christian). Once we become a new creature, GOD gives us a new heart. Romans 5:6-9 describes His love towards us, “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But GOD commends his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved [Rescued] from wrath through him.” 39

The same way our blood gives up carbon dioxide and, takes on a fresh supply of oxygen within our body, Jesus performs that great exchange in us. When we ask Jesus into our hearts, and we repent of our sins, Jesus forgives us our sins, because of His shed blood. Just as the carbon dioxide is exchanged in the lungs, with a fresh supply of oxygen, Jesus exchanges our sins, for Salvation. Romans 10:9-10, “That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that GOD has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes to righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made to salvation.” The WORD of GOD in Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Let me describe the salvation process, with a review of the physical realm. The human respiratory system is uniquely designed by God, to extract oxygen from ambient air and, to remove waste gases from the body. Humans need a continuous supply of oxygen for cellular respiration, and, they must get rid of excess carbon dioxide, the poisonous waste product of this process. Some 250 different volatile substances have been found in human breath. The oxygen, we need, is derived from the Earth’s atmosphere, which is 21% oxygen.xxi Breathing consists of two phases, inspiration and expiration. When a breath is taken, air passes in through the nostrils, through the nasal passages, into the pharynx, through the larynx, down the trachea, into one of the main bronchi, then, into smaller bronchial tubules, through even smaller bronchioles, and, into a microscopic air sac, called an alveolus. Most of the lung tissue is composed of alveoli. There are an estimated 300 million alveoli in the lungs providing gas exchange. It is here that external respiration occurs. Simply put, it is the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, between the air and the blood in the lungs. The blood picks up oxygen and disposes of carbon dioxide, in an extensive capillary network surrounding the alveoli and respiratory bronchioles. Oxygen-rich blood is returned to the left ventricle, via the pulmonary veins, for distribution to the rest of the body. The body’s tissues need the oxygen and, have to get rid of the carbon dioxide, so, that the blood carried throughout the body exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide with the body’s tissues. Internal respiration is basically the exchange of gasses between the blood in the capillaries and the body’s cells. Cellular respiration occurs when cells use oxygen in metabolic reactions and generate carbon dioxide, water, and energy.xxii Now, for the spiritual side of salvation;, up to now, we have had a thought in our mind, that we need to check out this Jesus. Then, in our will, we make a very personal decision and, act on it, by asking Jesus to RESCUE us from our sin and, then, to become the boss of all the areas of our life. When we ask Jesus into our hearts, and repent of our sins, He, through His BLOOD, forgives us our sins, by taking away the (carbon dioxide) sin and giving us (oxygen) Salvation.

The lungs are the place, within your body, where different types of gases are exchanged, within your body’s blood. We can also see the different types of spiritual gas exchanges that were made on our behalf, as Jesus hung on the cross and, shed His blood. Some of those exchanges are:12 We are FORGIVEN because He was PUNISHED Isaiah 53:4-5 “Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he [was] wounded for our transgressions, [he was] bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace [was] upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” We are HEALED because He was WOUNDED Matthew 8:16-17 “When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with [his] word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare [our] sicknesses.” We are RIGHTEOUS in Him because He was made SIN Isaiah 53:10 “Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put [him] to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see [his] seed, he shall prolong [his] days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.” We are made ALIVE because He tasted DEATH Hebrews 2:9 “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.” We become A NEW MAN because the OLD MAN was crucified Romans 6:6-11 “Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with [him], that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” We become ABUNDANT because He became POOR 2 Corinthians 8:9 “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.” Deuteronomy 28:47-48 “Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all [things]; Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all 41

[things]: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.” We are BLESSED because He was CURSED Galatians 3:13-14 “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed [is] every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” We receive his GLORY because He was SHAMED Matthew 27:35-36 “And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. And sitting down they watched him there;” Hebrews 12:2 “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” We are ACCEPTED because He was REJECTED Isaiah 53:3 “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were [our] faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.” Romans 10:9 “What then? are we better [than they]? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;” When we asked Jesus into our hearts, we not only received an exchange (carbon dioxide/sin for a fresh supply of oxygen/Salvation) but, at that precise moment, GOD, the great physician, performed heart surgery on us. GOD actually performed a heart transplant on us. He gave us a new heart known as the New Birth. This new birth, or regenerated heart, is no longer owned by sin, as the old heart was, but, GOD owns our new heart. He allows us to still have free will in and for our lives and hearts. The WORD of GOD says in Ezekiel 18:31 “Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit:”. GOD also said in Ezekiel 36:26 “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.”

Let’s look at what happens at the New Birth. 1. A moral and spiritual change, not a physical one. A. Galatians 4:29 “But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now;” B. John 3:1-8 “There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.” 2. A change of heart (new heart), will, motives, desires, life and conduct, and, not an organism. A. 2 Corinthians 5:17-18 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation” B. Ezekiel 18:31 “Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit:” C. Ezekiel 36:26 “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.” 3. A change of masters, not of constitutional makeup of body, soul, or spirit A. Romans 6:11-23 “Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of 43

doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” B. Romans 8:1-4 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” 4. An adoption of one from the satanic family into the family of God A. Romans 8:14-16 “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:” B. Galatians 4:5 “To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.” C. Ephesians 1:5 “Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.” 5. Not a coming into existence of the body, soul, or spirit, as in the natural birth, but, a consecration of them to serve God and holiness instead of Satan and sin. A. Romans 6:16-22 “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. B. Romans 8:1-13 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.” C. Colossian 3:5-10 “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:” D. Galatians 5:16-26 “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.”

6. Not a begetting by the Holy Spirit, in the sense that Jesus became and, is the only begotten Son of God: A. John 1:14,18 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.” B. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” But, a renewal in righteousness and, true holiness of one who is already in existence: A. Ephesians 4:23-24 “And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.” B. Colossians 3:10 “And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:” C. Psalm 51:10 “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” 7. A change of nature, but, not the coming into existence of that nature A. Romans 3:24-25 “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;” B. 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” C. Titus 3:5 “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;” 8. A change of favor, a new standing before God A. Romans 5:1-2 “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” B. Ephesians 2:1-9 “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. Titus 2:11-14 “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” D. 2 Peter 3:18 “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” E. 1 John 3:8-10 “He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.” 9. A change of character, state and service A. Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” B. Romans 3:24-26 “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” C. There is no comparison between the natural and spiritual birth, as to choice in the matter, conception, embryo, process, and actual birth. The very moment, one is grown enough to recognize that he is a sinner and, when he repents and believes the gospel, a moral and spiritual change takes place: A. Mark 1:15 “And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.” B. Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” C. Romans 10:9-10 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” D. 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Since you have accepted Jesus Christ into your heart and, have had a spiritual gas exchange, by asking Jesus to be your personal Savior and Lord, it is time for that new regenerated Godly Heart and Blood to flow, into all the areas of your life, starting with your emotions.

To the Left Atrium (Emotions): Back in the human lungs, the capillary beds of the lungs are drained by venules that are the tributaries of the pulmonary veins. Four pulmonary veins, two draining each lung, carry oxygenated blood to the left atrium (LA) of the heart or, your emotions / feelings. Your emotions are seen as the affective aspect of consciousness and feeling or, being Heart-Felt, something that you feel. Acts 17:27 “That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:” We live in a society where the words “I feel” have become the catch phrase of communication. Worse yet, what people feel has become the basis of much of their decision-making. The words “I feel” have become the do-all expression, used for anything and everything that people may experience, think, or want. But, what do people really mean when they say, “I feel this” or, “I feel that”? And, more importantly, what does the Bible teach about feelings? What is the world’s philosophy today? “If it feels good, do it!”xxiii

Let’s take a closer look at the way we use the word “feel” and, what the Bible says about it. There are four different ways we use the word “feeling,” but, not all of them are biblical. Four usages for the word “Feeling.” SENSE PERCEPTIONS: Cut your finger, and you feel pain. You feel an external, physical event. But, you can also feel internal events. For example, “I feel tense” when my muscles knot up and “I feel sick” when my stomach churns. So, in its simplest sense, feeling is a synonym for a physical sensation. OUR EMOTIONS: We say, “I feel angry, anxious, lonely, happy, affectionate, fearful, guilty, thankful, excited, ashamed, compassionate, sorrowful, awed, joyful.” These are all God-given emotions. In fact, God is Himself full of emotions like, sorrow and joy, anger and tenderness. Since He has created us in His image, we have emotions too. So, in Scripture, our emotions are properly called “feelings,” but, they may be either right or wrong, based on whether they are biblically justified and biblically expressed. BELIEFS, ATTITUDES, THOUGHTS: This use begins to move outside the parameters of Scripture; the Bible nowhere uses the word “feeling” in this way. And, the problem, with allowing ourselves to use “feeling” to express beliefs, is that “feelings” are impossible to argue with. OUR DESIRES: We often use the word “feeling” to express our desires (impulses, inclinations, desires, yearnings, intentions, and plans.) These last two uses of the word “feeling,” to mean either our beliefs or our desires, - are not biblical uses at all. xxiv As believers, we are not to be led by our feelings, but, we are to be moved by them, to show compassion and understanding to those in need. That is the right purpose and use of feelings and emotion;. so that, we may also be able to comfort, (console and encourage) those who are in any kind of trouble or distress, with the same kind of comfort that we ourselves are comforted by God (sounds like what we do on EMS calls, just add the medical part). 2 Corinthians 1:4 “who encourages us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to encourage those who are in any tribulation whatever, through the encouragement with which we ourselves are encouraged of God.” (DARBY)xxv 2 Corinthians 1:4 “who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” (NIV) xxvi

As EMS providers, I know that we see things that human eyes were never created to see. This fallen world is full of pain, sickness, death and, other carnages that we have to see and deal with day-in and day-out, while on duty. Struggles, with life and death, do not place us at risk on every 50

call, though certainly dangers often come our way. Now, on the other hand, our souls are in harm’s way, with every call; and, that is a danger graver than any bullet, fire or being hit on the road, while working a motor vehicle accident, could ever be. The emotions and feelings, that we all have before, during, and after our calls, are bottled up so that others will not think bad or less about us. We all find ways of dealing with these unbidden emotions and feelings, that come from a career, devoted to responding to people in crisis. Some people even try to stop feeling; Thinking that it was better to be a brick, and, not to feel, than to experience emotions and, we know the outcome of that. It would tear you apart, piece-by-piece. In fact, it wasn’t until the ‘80s and even into the ‘90s, before Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD), and, Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) were created; Then, Defusing, one on one, and now, psychological first-aid, all became an accepted part of emergency services; Police, Fire, and EMS workers, who showed their emotions, were considered weak and, possibly not right for the job. We were all encouraged to keep it inside. Professionals, after all, do not succumb to emotionalism. Others would turn to sex, drinking or drugs to alleviate the pain. In addition, as always, emergency service providers had a higher-than-normal share of suicides, due to the inability to deal with the daily stresses of their jobs.xxvii What is stress? The Webster’s Dictionary definition of “stress” is: bodily tension, including mental tension, which results from factors that tend to alter the existing equilibrium. “Tension” is defined as an unrest or imbalance internally, often associated with psychological symptoms, but, with an underlying emotional component. All of us seek a state of comfort - both physical and emotional: Stress is the result of events, in life, that disturb our normal position of physical or emotional comfort. “Stress is one of the most serious occupational hazards in the EMS/Fire service, affecting health, job performance, career decision-making, morale and family life. Constant exposure, to lifethreatening situations, highly stressful events and, the multitude of mentally and emotionally challenging emergency calls, affect EMS personnel physically, mentally, and emotionally and, most of all spiritually. This constant exposure, to mass casualties, death, carnage, and, human suffering, can lead to chronic (long-term) stress, which, in turn, can result in high blood pressure, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and, an increased susceptibility to heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Chronic stress may also cause “psychological problems, including depression, withdrawal, apathy, and relationship problems, in general.” Divorce, substance abuse, and, heart attack rates,s in these professions, are among the highest in the nation.xxviii Much has changed since I first got involved in EMS. Since the late 1980’s, much has been done to alleviate the emotional suffering of emergency service responders. We have moved through the following intervention techniques: CISD, CSIM, defusing, one on one, and now we are seeing a move toward psychological first-aid. Psychological first-aid (PFA) is not an intervention technique, but only, provides practical, supportive care, by listening to rescuer concerns, conveying compassion, assessing needs, ensuring that basic physical needs are met, and, protecting the rescuer from further harm. Most importantly, those who may not want to talk about what happened or, are not ready to deal with a possible onslaught of emotional responses, in the early days following exposure, are not and should not be compelled to talk. For those who want to talk, somebody should be there, simply to listen, not to provide any sort of care or intervention. In addition, 51

education and information can be provided to better help personnel understand psychological trauma, specifically what to expect and where to get help, if needed. If additional help is needed, they do however recommend that competent mental health personnel be available, within two months of a critical incident, to screen and assist any personnel, who may be developing stressrelated symptoms or PTSD.xxix How did I deal with it? I have spent many hours crying out to GOD, even getting mad at Him and cursing at Him, (then repenting for it later) after running some really bad calls, while I was on duty. Throughout this study, we have shown that GOD knows your heart so, why not voice it out to Him, getting it off your chest. GOD is a very big GOD and He can handle it. I believe, that everyone on earth has a God given special destiny and purpose to fulfill, while here on this earth. I know that all EMS providers are here for a unique role in life.xxx In the Bible, all emotions are experienced by the heart: love and hate (Psalm 105:25 “He turned their heart to hate his people, to deal subtilly with his servants ;” 1 Peter 1:22 “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:”); joy and sorrow (Ecclesiastes 2:10 “And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.” ; John 16:6 “But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.”); peace and bitterness (Ezekiel 27:31 “And they shall make themselves utterly bald for thee, and gird them with sackcloth, and they shall weep for thee with bitterness of heart and bitter wailing.”; Colossians 3:15 “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.”); courage and fear (Genesis 42:28 “And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us?”; Amos 2:16 “And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith the LORD.”). xxxi God designed all of your emotions. Each has a purpose, and, He wants you to learn how to express them, in a way that is honest and healthy. xxxii There are several definitions of the word “emotions.” According to Webster’s dictionary, the root source of this term is the Latin ex-movere, meaning to move away. The dictionary also says that emotions are “a complex, usually strong, subjective response...involving physiological changes, as a preparation for action.” That is true. Because of their complexity, emotions are not easy to explain, which sometimes makes dealing with them difficult. The term “emotionalism” is used to describe “a tendency to rely on or place too much value on emotion.” Often, it is defined as an “excessive display of emotion”. An “emotionalist” is “one whose conduct is ruled by emotion, as opposed to reason.” Wisdom always waits for the right time to act, while emotion always pushes for action right now! Emotionalism is rash. It calls for immediate action. While wisdom calmly looks ahead to determine how a decision will affect the future; emotions are only concerned with what is happening at the moment. 52

How many times have you said or done something in the heat of emotion then, later experienced deep, deep regret for your rash action? There are four sets of emotions common to all (whether we accept by faith, the principles in God’s Word, or reject them); they plague us, and, unless we get relief from them, they will ultimately destroy us. Emotions that plague each and every person. Fear-Anxiety-Apprehension Syndrome: There is no help for mankind; this is a meaningless universe. The world cares nothing for the individual who is only a number, and, though each individual is a unique person, there is really no help/hope for that person. Therefore, because of this, we have fears, anxieties, and apprehensions, as to what is coming. Anger-Hostility-Hated Syndrome: since basically we are afraid. This is a cover up, and, thus we exhibit our fears which come out through anger, hostility, and hatred; And hostility is the direct action to powerlessness in one’s life, because of what he fears. This bothers the Christian as well as the non-Christian. Depression-Guilt-Psychic Pain Syndrome: It is interesting to note that the majority of people, that occupy hospital beds, are there not because of physical illness, but, because of emotional, mental and psychological problems. If, as human beings, we could be rid of these, there would be plenty of beds in all hospitals today. It is an abiding sorrow that bothers every individual. For the nonChristian, it is an unconscious sense of guilt, though that person may not acknowledge or recognize it. For the Christian, it may be un-confessed sin which therefore leads to depression and guilt feelings. Destructive Egotism: This is another form of fear, “which I have myself; I have an ego, and, I have desires which may make it build up, to a certain degree.” As members of the human race, we all have emotional needs in our lives. There are four emotions that are basic to every individual, and, in order to overcome the emotions that constantly plague us, as well as to counter-balance them, we all have these four basic needs. The 4 Basic Human Emotional NEEDS Affection: (to love and to be loved) Every baby, born into the world, desires this. Sometime ago, an experiment was made in Colorado, in which a doctor took a group of unwanted babies, who had been abandoned. He found that, within a year, the majority of them died. Yes, they were well cared for and, they were fed, and the nurses looked after them; but, they died because they lacked affection and love, because every human being needs this. This is why God gave us mothers, to breast-feed babies, not only, for the benefit of the mother’s milk that the baby receives, but also, for that sense of security, that the baby gets as it is held in its mother’s arms. That is something that no bottle will ever accomplish, and, every human being needs this affection, not only as babies, but also for the rest of one’s life. 53

Acceptance: (of who one is, and, each individual’s unique character). We need to feel accepted by other people. This is part of our community of being together. Appreciation: (to have a favorable, critical estimate made of one’s self); A certain kind of approbation, a slap on the back for a job well done. We give medals, letters of commendation, watches, appreciation banquets---we pass out awards and rewards, and, various sorts of things. Why? Because we all need it. We need to be appreciated. Achievement: (not only a sense of satisfaction or accomplishment, but also, that which is praiseworthy) so, when we achieve a certain goal, there comes a certain amount of appreciation for that achievement, and, it makes us feel good, so, we desire it. xxxiii Many times, EMS personnel experience stress caused by frustration. The frustration can stem from a number of factors. From the difficulty in finding and reaching the proper address, site or scene, to having improper or inadequate communication, and, the lack of or outdated equipment; these and many other frustrations, experienced by members of EMS, may lead to stronger, more conscious emotions. The sense of urgency, of the situation, fuels the adrenaline rush. In fact, some become addicted to the rush, provided by adrenaline, constantly seeking out circumstances that will provide the feelings associated with adrenaline rush or junkie.xxxiv (According to the majority of men & women who are involved in the pre-hospital field of EMS, the real “ Rush, ” in this life, is the trauma calls and fighting the fight, dancing the dance and beating the Grim Reaper, at his own game. Bring someone back from his grasp of death, and, seeing that person make a full recovery and leave the hospital, returning to a normal life. (Now that is a rush!) People are addicted to excitement, which leads to “excessive” emotional stimulation. Be careful-excitement seeks more excitement. Hype leads to disillusionment and disappointment. If you don’t learn to balance out, relax and enjoy, you will burn out. Once we get burned out, it is very hard to recover! This can result in anger and anxiousness. Once the anger and the anxiety fade, they may begin to feel fear. The fear can result in self-doubt, in one’s own abilities to perform the job.xxxv The Minirth-Meier book Worry-Free Living, gives this definition: “[Anxiety] is an emotion that a person experiences in the face of a perceived threat or a danger. ‘Perceived’ because the danger can be real or imagined, and, in this job, there is most definately a lot of it.” If the danger is real, anxiety can serve as a positive warning ... If the danger is imagined, anxiety is negative baggage that weighs a person down, saps his energy, and leaves him ineffective. In either case, whether the danger is real or imagined, the anxiety and all of its symptoms are absolutely real. Watch any news telecast and one thing becomes obvious: we live in an angry and selfish world. Television and newspaper reports record the consequences of our angry outbursts with great detail. In Make Anger Your Ally, Neil Clark Warren writes: “When people get angry, the results are almost always negative - even frightful.” 54

Christian author and counselor Gary Collins writes: “Anger, along with hostility, has been called ‘the chief saboteur of the mind.’ … As a result, human anger can be harmful and dangerous. It provides an opening for Satan, and, is something against which we are cautioned. ‘Be angry,’ we read in Ephesians 4:26 “When angry, do not sin; do not ever let your wrath (your exasperation, your fury or indignation) last until the sun goes down. and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger.” (AMP) xxxvi I believe that we do a dis-service to the biblical characters and ourselves, when we think that the biblical characters did not have feelings, like we do. I have often been asked, how do we know that bible characters went through things that we do or, have the feelings and emotions that we do? That answer can be seen over and over again throughout the Bible. The biblical characters were often isolated, estranged, and desolate. Even when the Lord, Jesus Christ was in the Garden of Gethsemane, an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him (Luke 22:43 “And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him).” We should never be too proud to ask for strength. Jesus, Himself, needed to be strengthened in His hour of trial.xxxvii Have you ever had your feelings hurt by someone you know, love or admire? Who hasn’t? When we gave our heart to God and asked Jesus Christ to be the Lord and Savior of our life, we still had our feelings and emotions to deal with. But, there is one big difference; Christians do not have the right to be offended. What does that mean? Our feelings will get hurt, but, we are to forgive others, as Christ forgave us. You might ask, where in the Bible does it tell us that we are not to be offended, well, here are a few scriptures. Acts 24:16 “This being so, I myself always strive to have a conscience without offense toward GOD and men.” Philippians 1:10 “that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ,” 1 Corinthians 2:4 “And my language and my message were not set forth in persuasive (enticing and plausible) words of wisdom, but they were in demonstration of the [Holy] Spirit and power a proof by the Spirit and power of GOD, operating on me and stirring in the minds of my hearers the most holy emotions and thus persuading them],” (AMP) Since the heart’s left side is thicker than the right, I feel that becoming a Christian is the easy part of the Christian life; then, the hard work starts. You have to get a thicker skin in HIM! The most serious problem, that plagues Christians, is that of the “old” and “new” natures. The two are diametrically opposed to each other, and, every Christian has the two within himself. Paul certainly set forth the conflict quite clearly in Romans 7:11-25 “For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death. So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good. Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! But in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful. We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; 55

no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.” Wherein he noted “the good which I should do, I do not, but, the evil which I should not do, that I do.” It then calls for a constant and consistent application, to daily living, of the integration of the traits of life to the center, which is Christ. Only when this takes place can the latent power of the personality be combined with the power of God, to produce a productive usefulness in the Christian life.xxxviii What you believe, in your heart, is your philosophy in life! We need revelation in our hearts, of the truth in our heads! xxxix I found the following poem at www.rescuehouse.com and, the author is unknown, but, I feel that this will give us a good picture of the emotions and feelings, that we, in this field, face day to day. When God Made Paramedicsxl When the Lord made Paramedics, he was into his sixth day of overtime, when an angel appeared and said, “You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.” And the Lord said, “Have you read the specs on this order? A paramedic has to be able to carry an injured person up a wet, grassy hill, in the dark, un-armed and dodge stray bullets, to reach a dying child; and enter homes that the health inspector wouldn’t touch, and not wrinkle his uniform.” “He has to be able to lift 3 times his own weight, crawl into wrecked cars, with barely enough room to move, and, console a grieving mother, as he is doing CPR on a baby that he knows will never breathe again.” “He has to be in top mental condition at all times, running on no sleep, black coffee and half-eaten meals; And, he has to have six pair of hands.” The angel shook her head slowly and said, “Six pairs of hands...no way.” “It’s not the hands that are causing me problems,” said the Lord, “It’s the three pair of eyes that a medic has to have.” “That’s on the standard model?” asked the angel. The Lord nodded. “One pair that sees open sores, as he’s drawing blood and, asks the patient if he may be HIV positive,” (When he already knows and wishes he’d taken that accounting job.) “Another pair here in the side of his head for his partner’s safety; And, another pair of eyes here in front, that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, “You’ll be all right ma’am” when he knows it isn’t so.” “Lord,” said the angel, touching his sleeve, “rest and work on this tomorrow.” “I can’t,” said the Lord, “I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk out 56

from behind a steering wheel, without incident, and feed a family of five on a private service paycheck.” The angel circled the model of the paramedic very slowly, “Can it think?” she asked. “You bet,” said the Lord. “It can tell you the symptoms of 100 illnesses; recite drug calculations in its sleep; intubate, defibrillate, medicate, and continue CPR nonstop, over terrain that any doctor would fear...and, still it keeps its sense of humor. This medic also has phenomenal, personal control. He can deal with a multi-victim trauma, coax a frightened, elderly person to unlock their door, comfort a murder victim’s family, and, then read in the daily paper how paramedics were unable to locate a house quickly enough, allowing the person to die. A house, which had no street sign, no house numbers, and, no phone to call back.” Finally, the angel bent over and ran her fingers across the cheek of the paramedic. “There’s a leak,” she pronounced. “I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model.” “That’s not a leak,” said the Lord, “It’s a tear.” “What’s the tear for?” asked the angel. “It’s for bottled-up emotions, for patients they’ve tried in vain to save, for commitment to that hope that they will make a difference in a person’s chance to survive, for life.” “You’re a genius,” said the angel. The Lord looked somber. “I didn’t put it there,” He said. Author: Unknown Do you struggle or, have you ever struggled with anything listed in the poem above or, have you ever just struggled with feelings of restlessness, emptiness, anger, insomnia, lack of concentration, pain, depression and anxiety or guilt feelings, while working in EMS? Or, have you ever had the jitters, the shakes, that queasy feeling in the stomach, or, the tension that overtakes you in times of stress? If you do, or, have in the past, you are not alone! Even, the person, who seems the most confident and daring, has moments of uneasiness. You might have even tried to get rid of them by helping other people, doing charity work, working multiple jobs in the field of EMS or, escaping from the pain, through various activities or consuming hobbies. (Drinking, drugs, extreme sports, sex, etc.) If you need help, please seek it. But, when all is said and done, the old feelings are still there. Jesus wants you to come sit down at His table, enjoy fellowship with Him, and know the comfort (consolation and encouragement) of His unending presence, peace and gracious love. xli

Let me sum up “Feeling” this way: Do Not Depend on Feelings The promise of God’s Word, the Bible - not our feelings - is our authority. The Christian lives by faith (trust in one’s equipment, training and known skills), in the trustworthiness of God Himself and His Word. The following photos will illustrate, to us, the relationship among fact (God and His Word), faith (our trust in God and His Word), and feeling (the result of our faith and obedience).xlii

EMS crews can drive around in the ambulance, with equipment (as Christians, we move on the FACT with our FAITH). However, it would be useless for the EMS crew to attempt to push or pull the ambulance and its equipment, to any call; (as believers, our FEELINGS or emotions do not change the FACTS of God’s word, trustworthiness and the promises of His Word). When EMS crews respond to a call, the equipment used, depends on the needs of the call (as believers, we exercise our FAITH, according to the needs we have). We are taught, through God and his Word, that we are to be moved by our FEELINGS or emotions, to show compassion and understanding to those in need. That is the right purpose and use of FEELINGS and emotions, so that, we may also be able to comfort (console and encourage) those who are in any kind of trouble or distress. With that said, the EMS crew can respond on their EMS units (Fact) to EMS calls. As the result of our equipment, training and known skills (Faith), we can give appropriate patient care (Feeling), with the care and comfort that we ourselves receive from God.xliii Only then, can we really move on to the next level in Christ, and, that is allowing Him to really become the Lord of our whole life, and, everything that we are, body, soul, (mind, will, emotions and your personality) and spirit. It is at this point that we turn to look at the left ventricle, known in this study as your personality. As I stated before, the heart’s left side is thicker than the right; I feel that, becoming a Christian is the easy part, then, the hard work starts. You have to get a thicker skin in HIM! Also, as stated above, what you believe in your heart is your philosophy in life! We need to take revelation; we now have Christ, Jesus in our heads and, we must allow it to sink into our hearts. We have to start living the life, talking the talk and, walking the walk! What I mean is walking out daily and doing the things that we are learning, from our quiet times with God, allowing Him to put the axe to some of the roots, that we have in our lives, turning up the heat to our hearts, to burn for His righteousness in our lives. By doing all this, we Will be able to make the changes that might be asked by God, to do in and with our personal lives and personality.

To the Left Ventricle (Personality): OUR Personality and Character The characteristics, (that distinguish an individual or a nation or a group, especially, the totality of an individual’s behavioral and emotional characteristics) are his or her Character/Personality traits. Personality is that which constitutes and characterizes a person. The word “person” (Latin, persona) is derived from the mask, through which an actor spoke his part (persona). For full personality, there must be self-consciousness, with the capability of free will, thought and action-self-determination--hence, we speak of personal character, personal action, etc. The personality is the unit of the entire rational being, perhaps most clearly represented by “the will”; it is that which is deepest in man; - Your true personality which is always being formed.xliv Another way to look at personality or character is that they are the qualities or conditions of being a person, or, the totality of qualities and traits, as of character or behavior, that are peculiar to a specific person; The pattern of collective character, behavioral, temperamental, emotional, and, mental traits of a person: Distinctive qualities of a person, especially those distinguishing, personal characteristics that make one socially appealing: the complex of all the attributes--behavioral, temperamental, emotional and mental--that characterize a unique individual; “their different reactions, reflecting their very different personalities”; “it is His nature to help others.”xlv 59

1 Timothy 4: 12-16 “Let no one despise or think less of you because of your youth, but be an example (pattern) for the believers {Then the unbelieversxlvi} in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity. Till I come, devote yourself to [public and private] reading, to exhortation (preaching and personal appeals), and to teaching and instilling doctrine. Do not neglect the gift which is in you, [that special inward endowment] which was directly imparted to you [by the Holy Spirit] by prophetic utterance when the elders laid their hands upon you [at your ordination]. Practice and cultivate and meditate upon these duties; throw yourself wholly into them [as your ministry], so that your progress may be evident to everybody. Look well to yourself [to your own personality] and to [your] teaching; persevere in these things [hold to them], for by so doing you will save both yourself and those who hear you.” (AMP) Our Personality has 2 parts: Inherited- What we received and inherited from our parents and family. Acquired- (Distinctive quality of Character) That which develops in us, as a result of other experiences we have had while trying to get our needs met. Did you know that God has a personality? The Old Testament, consistently talks of God as a person; the person-to-person relationship with God, of which both Old and New Testaments speak, is unique to the true Christian hope.xlvii In Hebrew, a person’s name often reflected their character and/or information about them. Some clear examples: ‘Jesus’= ‘Saviour’ (Matthew 1:21 “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”). ‘Abraham’= ‘Father of a great multitude’ (Genesis 17:5 “Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.”) ‘Eve’= ‘Living’ (Genesis 3:20 “And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.”). ‘Simeon’= ‘hearing’ (Genesis 29:33 “And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the LORD hath heard I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon.”), and, even my name, Christopher means ‘Follower of Christ’ and, ‘Christ-like’. It is therefore to be expected that, God’s names and titles will give us much information about his character. Because there are so many aspects of God’s character and purpose, He actually has more than one Name. God is also omnipotent (all–powerful) or, omniscient (all– knowing) or, omnipresent (present everywhere).xlviii

PERSONALITY TYPES MADE EASY The Four Basic Temperaments THE LEADER - THE “A” TYPE PERSONALITY We need not look very far to find an “A” personality in our midst. They are the ones that are always “looking for a better way” or building a “better mouse trap”. They have an entrepreneurial streak and don’t mind taking risk, in order to receive the rewards that can go along with it. The “A” personality is usually very independent, direct and to-the-point. They will probably tell you to “get to the bottom line” or give them the “executive summary” to read. They don’t like routine and, often delegate routine chores to someone else. The “A” personality enjoys change, and, one of their biggest fears is falling into a routine. They are very focused on what they are doing and, are almost always relatively insensitive to others that might be around them. If they tell somebody something, or explain it, they’ll say it ONCE and expect that, everybody listening, understood, because they’re ready to move on. They will often jump into a project or rush a decision, without thinking about it first. They are independent people with strong wills. They are able to see the “big picture” of a project or opportunity and, are good at solving problems. They like excitement and, will make demands upon people, without realizing how those people are feeling. They should practice selfcontrol and self-discipline, and, try to be more aware of other’s feelings. The “A” personality types are seen to be bold and confident and, able to avoid obstacles, when making an idea work. “A” type personalities are very “direct” people, that typically “take charge” and forge ahead. They are very decisive and persistent in getting what they want and need. People in the Bible with a type “A” personality: Lydia: Lydia overlooked the fact that she was a woman and, was determined to make a difference through business. She was a self-starter, whose reputation was built upon her achievements. She did not fear the opinion that others had of her and her ambitions, but, pushed forward with a drive to serve the Lord. Nehemiah: Nehemiah was consumed with rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. the whole project, while delegating the work to the town’s people. strong desire, to see this project finished, kept him working, in enemies, who tried to prevent this work from succeeding. Jesus: Jesus possesses the characteristics of these. When He had passion for something, nothing could keep Him from seeing that project/plan through to its completion. THE SOCIALIZER - “B” TYPE PERSONALITY The “B” type loves to party, travel and be part of groups, and, is often the center of attention. They love excitement and, are often impatient and demanding, as a result of being a “high energy” type. They love the limelight and the “hype” and, often do very well in sales, advertising, marketing, public speaking, party planning, travel and other positions, where they can have a “good time” while working. They can communicate to others better than most people. They don’t have a long attention span and, are very out-spoken. They easily trust others and expect to be trusted in return. They are good at building a team attitude among others. The “B” personality is as supportive of others, as they are direct in their approach. Most people enjoy being around them or, watching or listening to them “perform”. Many radio and TV personalities, actors and high-profile speakers are often “B” personalities. It is very important for the “B” personality to be liked by others and, they can be easily hurt if they think someone doesn’t care for them. They may take it very personal. People in the Bible with a type “B” personality: Samaritan Woman: Samaritans were not allowed to talk to Jesus, let alone approach Him, yet, this woman had such a passion for Jesus, that she dared to break the rule. In doing so, she got to know Jesus in a new way and, was able to carry His message to others, who did not have the opportunity to speak to Him themselves. Read more about the Samaritan Woman in John 4:542. Aaron: Aaron was blessed with good speaking skills - which came in handy for Moses. When Moses was called to free the Israelites from Pharaoh, Aaron was there to aid Moses in communicating this message to the people and, to Pharaoh. Aaron’s passion for communicating exploded, when he was in the center of situations or surrounded by crowds. Read more about Aaron in Exodus 4:14-17 and Exodus 32:16. Jesus: Jesus was sent to this earth so that He could die for our sins and, could communicate to all people, the salvation message. He was a master at communicating, keeping people listening to Him for days at a time, even without stopping to eat, for fear they might miss something Jesus said. “DETAILS, DETAILS...” - THE “C” TYPE PERSONALITY If you want to picture a typical “C” type personality, think of your accountant, an engineer or, a computer programmer or analyst. The “C” thrives on details and accuracy and, takes just about everything seriously. They are usually very neat, dress fashionably and, are very calculated and precise in just about everything they do. The “C” doesn’t like “hype”, rather, they want facts...information from which they can verify the details and make a decision. They are very consistent in everything they do because everything has an order or procedure; thus, they can be predictable at times and, often very dependable; however, don’t expect them to make a decision when YOU want it, as it will only come after THEY have checked all the facts and, are satisfied that everything is correct. They are often quiet, and, are often critical of themselves and others although they never express it. They will push themselves to achieve perfection, in order to avoid criticism from others. They are dependable, cautious and usually insightful, to how others are feeling. When they do something, they do it thoroughly. They will make a decision, only after much thinking and analyzing of the “hows” and, “whys” of the situation, rather than emotions that are involved. They are neat people and good organizers. They have the ability to think creatively. They feel most comfortable in a stable environment and, only like slow, deliberate change, rather than spontaneity. They are deep, thoughtful and usually very sensitive. They enjoy knowing how and why things are the way they are, rather than taking anything at face value. People in the Bible with a type “C” personality: Prophet’s Widow: When the widow’s husband died, she reported to Elisha in order to seek a practical way to think through what had happened and what she should do. Once Elisha assigned the widow a specific task to complete, she faithfully did that task, until it was done. Then, she awaited more instructions and, was obedient to them, as well. Read more about the Prophet’s Widow in 2 Kings 4:1-7. Luke: Before writing the book of Luke, Luke carefully researched everything so that he could write about things, in an orderly fashion. The book of Luke is filled with details and, he was cautious in his choice of words so, that he could accurately describe each event. Read more about Luke in Luke 1:1-4 and Acts 1:1-2. Jesus: Jesus possesses the same characteristics that a “C” does. When confronted and tempted by Satan, He always replied with Scripture. No matter how hungry, tired, and thirsty He was, Jesus was not going to let Satan get the best of Him. Read more about Jesus with a “C” type personality in Matthew 4:1-11.

ALWAYS THERE WHEN YOU NEED THEM - THE “D” TYPE PERSONALITY The typical “D” personality doesn’t like change, preferring instead to have a set of guidelines, from which to follow and, they won’t mind doing the same thing over and over. They are usually more motivated by security and benefits and, are likely to get the “gold watch” if the company can provide the security they seek. “D” types are very supportive of others and, are often the type that others turn to when they have a problem. Their compassion level is usually quite high and, often they seem very happy and content with themselves and life, in general. They are usually punctual, and consistent. They add “balance” and support, in the workplace, and, may be the champion of the “under dog”. They are stable people who exhibit patience and loyalty with their friends, even at the expense of personal pain. They develop friendships over a period of time, rather than right away. They prefer a routine, rather than change, and, work well with different personality types. It may take them a while to adjust to change. Saying “no” is difficult for them. Sometimes stubborn, they will not change their minds once they make a decision. Others see them as patient and cooperative. They desire peace in all situations, and, will stay strong, no matter what. People in the Bible with a type “D” personality: Dorcas: Dorcas is not remembered for what she said, but, for what she did. It was her acts of compassion that filled so many peoples’ hearts. She was seen as a provider and supporter. She was constantly doing all that she could, to help others. Read more about Dorcas in Acts 9:36-42. Simeon: Simeon was content in doing his day-in, day-out routine, while waiting for Jesus to come. He stayed faithfully and patiently, at the temple, for the duration of his life, until Jesus came. Read more about Simeon in Luke 2:25-35. Jesus: Jesus is faithful to all, always remaining by their side, whether on earth physically or spiritually. He would not leave anyone hurting. He could not turn away any who called upon Him and, He could not hate those who hated Him. He was faithful to all. The Personality Types: A - Type Personality - Strong traits - patience, persistence, leadership capabilities, decisive, independent, entrepreneur spirit. Requires a development of a relationship, strong sense of loyalty, play to win. Does not enjoy hype. B - Type Personality - Strong traits - impatient, demanding, loves parties, can get bored easily, and, has a need for feedback. C - Type Personality - Strong traits - very analytical, detailed, and patient, perfectionist, consistent, needs structure. D - Type Personality - Strong traits - consistent, calm, patient, sets realistic goals, listener, , competent.

What Inspires The: A - Type - challenge, money, freedom, and more money B - Type - recognition, awards, excitement, and trips C - Type - challenge, money, recognition, and position D - Type - titles, recognition, awards, and security

(Why we are good at what we do) EMS Personality Traits EMS and Fire personnel engage in an occupation that demands rapid decision-making, quick action and specific task orientation (thinkers, doers and leaders). To be good at what we do, our personalities must match the job (double “A” - “A” personality with active, aggressive, outward stance). Let’s take a closer look at what generally makes a “Good EMS provider”: Obsessive/compulsive: We want things done NOW (hate to be kept waiting); we need to do not only a good job but also a perfect job, at all times. Will accept ONLY the very best, without error. We have Pride in doing a perfect job; we practice skills and do drills repeatedly. EMS people are hard to train because they need to do everything right, and, want specifics, not generalities (how to tie the knots, etc.). We want to carry out actions ‘til the end and, won’t relinquish a job to others. Sometimes, this makes us vulnerable, by keeping us in action, too long. We hate stupidity and, will not tolerate short-comings in others. We are slow to forgive any form of incompetence. Mistakes cause us to be embarrassed, frustrated and angry. Histrionic/Egocentric: Self-focusing: (need to be in public) – We like to see the final product of our work and, respond well to visual markers of success. Nothing like a good call, in a crowded place or, with news cameras focusing on you and, a job well done. Sometimes however, we rush in unprepared (where no fool would dare) and hence, become the center of attention, in a very negative way. Control Maniacs: We want to be in charge of the scene, ourselves and family. We are frustrated and angered by things that we are unable to control (different than non-EMS workers) and, we believe that we don’t do feelings. Fear, that one is losing control, is a sign of weakness and instability. Constantly testing ourselves, in order to defend against catastrophic consequences of losing emotional control in an emergency situation, like looking at dead people in a car, to see if we can take it. Unfortunately, we often maintain this control at home, and, other places where appropriate emotional responses and letting loose, are required and expected (worse, if both husband and spouse are EMS). Action Oriented: We are risk takers and adrenaline junkies! Thrilled by the dramatic rescue or, a patient saved, against the odds. We seek out action when none is to be found: Will show up at the big one when not on-call. Keep that monitor on at all times (don’t want to miss out on anything). Disappointed when not on-duty for the big ones. We have a high need for stimulation/easily bored - always looking for new forms: drive fast cars, motorcycle, hang-glide, parachute, scuba, and climb.

Think of what we do, as a job and, as fun (example - most people run out of burning buildings or try to get out of wrecked cars), which is sometimes bad, because we fail to properly evaluate the situation, before acting: The downside, of risk takers, is a feeling of indestructibility. We tend not to properly evaluate the situation, make mistakes which can cause injures or, terminally harm the patients, we are trying to help; Without thinking, we tend to: work in or enter unsafe areas, wear protective clothing improperly or, not at all, and ride apparatus in an unsafe manner. On slow days, we can’t stand to be idle and, keep busy by: practical jokes, physical exercise, heated arguments, intense study, equipment maintenance and house cleaning. Loyal and Dedicated: Our dedication, to a cause, is almost unlimited. Once we commit to something, we will drive forward to completion or exhaustion. Often, the victim’s needs are confused with our own: We want to be needed. We want to help others who could not save themselves. We hate false calls, or, call that amount too little - (not to mention routine BLS transports). EMS providers (paid or volunteer) have one of the highest divorce rates in the country: Personality, job, life style and stress - the #1 cause is lack of communication. On average, a husband/wife spend less than 4 hours per week, in serious conversation. You know your marriage is in trouble when: 1. You keep a key, to the ambulance, on your key ring. 2. You can talk to the ambulance more easily, than to your spouse. 3. Your wife says that your vocabulary consists only of medical terms and 10 codes. 4. You can remember the station’s telephone number faster, than your home telephone. 5. You sleep fully dressed, because it’s easier. 6. The phone at home rings, and, you automatically put your shoes on. 7. Your spouse takes you out to your favorite restaurant, and, you tell the waiter that you’d like it fixed to go “just in case”.

EMS tends to be 90 % boredom and 10 % pure panic. Both of these facts impact us as forms of stress, because of our personalities. We make statements like: “God! - I don’t wish anything terrible to happen to anyone but, if it does, ,please let it happen on my shift!” and, “Nothing ever happens while I’m on call”.l EMS educators suggest that anyone, entering the emergency medical field, will need “unconditional love for helping people medically and, the willingness to work” under stressful conditions.li

Christ-Like Character and Personality! God wants each and every one of us to have a Christ-like character and, His personality. It is a responsibility we have as a Christian. It takes commitment and testing, to build His character and personality in us. 1 Timothy 4:11-16 “Command and teach these things. Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.” (NIV) With that said, listen to this parable of Jesus, as it applies to character. Luke 6:43-45; “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thorn bushes, or grapes from briers. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” (NIV) It is easy to see the character/personality in others, for it is what they talk about and live like. Godly (Christ-like) character, is what distinguishes those that serve Christ and, those who don’t. We have said before that character takes commitment. Christ wants us to be committed to him wholly. 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15; “In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. 9We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to follow. For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “If a man will not work, he shall not eat.” We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right. If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of him. Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed. Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.” (NIV)

Will you accept that kind of responsibility? you know what Christ said in Revelation 3:15-16? “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm-neither hot nor cold-I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” (NIV) We need to take our role, as a Christian, in our surroundings, even more seriously. Christ died on a cross and, was beaten for us. We are going to be tempted but, through those temptations, in Christ, we build character. Christ went through testing as well, and, if we are tested, what should we do? Should we be upset, or, count it all JOY? The bible says in James 1:2-4 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when ever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of you faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and not lacking anything.” (NIV) Building character also involves trust in the Lord. 2 verses later in James GOD states: “But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.” (NIV) With all this said, how do we build character? Reading the Bible, and praying, to know what the Lord is saying, but, it is your actions, in following what HE says, that build character. To know the Word of GOD is great, but, if you don’t apply it, then, it is worthless. What do YOU think? Your Blood Type Personalityliii TYPE O: You want to be a leader, and, when you see something you want, you keep striving until you achieve your goal. You are a trendsetter, loyal, passionate and self-confident. Your weaknesses include vanity, jealousy and a tendency to be too competitive. TYPE A: You like harmony, peace and organization. You work well with others and are sensitive, patient and affectionate. Among your weaknesses are stubbornness and an inability to relax. TYPE B: You’re a rugged individualist who’s straightforward and likes to do things your own way. Creative and flexible, you adapt easily to any situation. However, your insistence, on being independent, can sometimes go too far and become a weakness. TYPE AB: Cool and controlled, you’re generally well-liked and, always put people at ease. You’re a natural entertainer who’s tactful and fair; But, you’re sometimes stand-offish and blunt and have difficulty making decisions.

Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven, 41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.” Proverbs 20:27 “The spirit of man [that factor in human personality which proceeds immediately from GOD] is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost parts.” (AMP) Ephesians 3:16 “May He grant you out of the rich treasury of His glory to be strengthened and reinforced with mighty power in the inner man by the [Holy] Spirit [Himself indwelling your innermost being and personality].” (AMP) Hebrews 9:14 “How much more surely shall the blood of Christ, Who by virtue of [His] eternal Spirit [His own preexistent divine personality] has offered Himself as an unblemished sacrifice to GOD, purify our consciences from dead works and lifeless observances to serve the [ever] living GOD?” (AMP) Hebrews 10:22 “Let us all come forward and draw near with true (honest and sincere) hearts in unqualified assurance and absolute conviction engendered by faith (by that leaning of the entire human personality on GOD in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness), having our hearts sprinkled and purified from a guilty (evil) conscience and our bodies cleansed with pure water.” (AMP) 1 Timothy 4:16 “Look well to yourself [to your own personality] and to [your] teaching; persevere in these things [hold to them], for by so doing you will save both yourself and those who hear you.” (AMP) Traits, or characteristic patterns of behavior, are basic in the development of every individual’s unique personality. The most serious problem that plagues Christians of all ages and, of all times, is that of the “old” and “new” natures. The two are diametrically opposed to each other, and, every Christian has the two within himself. Paul certainly set forth the conflict quite clearly in Romans 7:11-25 wherein he noted “the good which I would I do not, but the evil which I would not, that I do.” It then calls for a constant and consistent application to daily living, of the integration of the traits of life to the center, which is Christ. Only when this takes place can the latent power of the personality be combined with the power of God, to produce a productive usefulness in the Christian life.liv Throughout this study, we have been looking at the human heart, the way that God does. We started off on the physical side, with the right and left atrium and ventricles. We then moved to the physiology of the Christian heart or, the spiritual side, with the mind, will, emotions, and personality/character of an individual. Now, we have reached the place where the blood is leaving the left ventricle to go to the aorta and, into the systemic circulation, where the oxygen rich blood is pumped out to the body and, all the organs that go with it, under high pressure/POWER! - In order that, every single cell within the body is supplied with the vital oxygen and all nutrients that the body needs.

To the body: (To your personal body for a time of spiritual growth, then, the Church, and then, to the rest of the world) The left ventricle pumps oxygen rich blood from the lung, through the arteries to all the organs of the body. In order that every single cell is supplied with the vital oxygen and, all nutrients, the major arteries ramify into increasingly smaller arteries. These branch again into even smaller arteries, called arterioles, and, finally into capillaries, a dense network of tiny vessels. From these capillaries, oxygen exchange takes place with the cells. The capillaries then transit into the venules, which are the smallest veins. The venules transport the now oxygen-poor, carbon dioxide-rich blood away from the cells, until ultimately the “used” blood reaches the right ventricle, through the vena cava. The blood is now pumped back to the lungs.lv Let’s look at the spiritual side of this: the blood is leaving the left ventricle to go to the aorta and into the systemic circulation, where the oxygen rich blood is pumped out to all organs of the body, under high pressure/POWER! Acts 1:8 “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth”. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” (NIV) 71

The Bible teaches us that we are one body with many parts. Every body part, down to the single cells within the body, needs the vital oxygen and, all nutrients that can be obtained through the blood of Jesus Christ. Romans 12:4-5 “For as in one physical body we have many parts (organs, members) and all of these parts do not have the same function or use, So we, numerous as we are, are one body in Christ (the Messiah) and individually we are parts one of another [mutually dependent on one another].” (AMP) In the same way, as the new God-given blood flows through us, (through our mind, will, emotions, and our personality/character) then, it wants to flow to every area of our lives. Until the love and God-like-character, that are inside of us, starts to exude from our pores and overflow on to all those around us. Then, systemic circulation, within the Christian heart, would be you and I answering the God given mandate or commission: Matthew 28:18-20 “Jesus approached and, breaking the silence, said to them, All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you all the days (perpetually, uniformly, and on every occasion), to the [very] close and consummation of the age. Amen (so let it be).” (AMP) With this commission, we, as Christians, are to make changes in our lives, wherever God leads us, to do so. Then, start walking out our salvation, in front of others to see. - At home, at work, and, at play. Philippians 2:12 “Therefore, my dear ones, as you have always obeyed [my suggestions], so now, not only [with the enthusiasm you would show] in my presence but much more because I am absent, work out (cultivate, carry out to the goal, and fully complete) your own salvation with reverence and awe and trembling (self-distrust, with serious caution, tenderness of conscience, watchfulness against temptation, timidly shrinking from whatever might offend God and discredit the name of Christ).” (AMP) So, what do we do, now that we have made Jesus Christ the Lord and Savior of our lives, whether for the first time or re-dedicating our life back to Him. I like to talk about this subject this way: I know for a fact that, if you have been in this line of work very long, you know what CPR is, cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It has saved many lives. I would like to introduce you to Christian CPR; It can save your spiritual life. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Witnessing is a spiritual battle, where we, not only, fight against ignorance and prejudice, but also, against Satan. He will attempt to hinder our efforts, attack us spiritually, and do a thousand other things to stop us. As a result, we can suffer spiritually dry times, brought on by his attacks. So, what do we do to save our spiritual life?

It’s simple, as with anything, that has the potential for renewed life, administer CPR: Confess, Pray and Read. Confess The first letter “C” of CPR, represents Confession: our human need. Each person, who witnesses, should have his own life right with God. That doesn’t mean being perfect, but, it does mean actively seeking to walk in accord with God’s will. It means regularly confessing your sins to God and forsaking them. This is done in prayer. Sin is not something to be taken lightly. It is so bad, so evil, so wicked, that it cost Jesus His life. The greatness, of the sacrifice of Christ, only reflects the greatness of the depth of our sin. It took something, as incredible as God on the cross, to undo our sin. Sin can hinder our effectiveness so, we need to make sure that we confess any and all our sins to God. He will forgive us and, our fellowship with Him will be restored. In that proper relationship, He will guide us and empower us to speak boldly for Him. The Bible says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Confession is good for the soul they say -- and it is true. It is good to bow before the Lord in humility and seek His forgiveness: “Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord and He will exalt you” (James 4:10). Be ready to confess and forsake your sins. That is what God asks. Pray The second letter “P” represents Prayer: your special privilege. Through prayer, you are in fellowship with the Holy Creator, of the universe. You can actually speak to Him. You can worship, love, and spend time with Him. Because of what Jesus has done for you, on the cross, God hears your prayers. When you desire to pray, is it our flesh that seeks Him? No. Since our natural self does not seek God and, since we are still in sinful flesh, when the inclination to pray comes over us, it is God calling us to spend time with Him. He wants us to have a fellowship with Him. 1 Corinthians 1:9 says, “God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” He wants us to be in His presence and be dependent upon Him. The one, who is in the presence of the Lord, will have his heart filled by Him. One cannot but speak of Him for “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). When Moses was in the presence of God, his face shone (2 Corinthians 3:7). When we are in the presence of God, our heart will shine. Prayer is the practice of the presence of God. To be effective, we need to be in fellowship with God. To be in fellowship, we need to be praying, constantly.

Read The third letter “R” represents Reading: your daily bread. It is in reading the Bible, that God speaks to us. The Bible is, of course, the Word of God. It is, “inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work” (1 Timothy 3:16-17). The Word of God is one of the ways He has made Himself known to us. It is light for our soul, food for our thoughts, and, the guide by which we should shape our life. By reading the Bible and memorizing scripture, we are a much greater threat to Satan. When Jesus was tempted by Satan, what did He use to rebuke Him? A miracle? A powerful sweep of His hand? No. He quoted scripture (Matthew 4). Follow Jesus’s example. Learn Scripture. Use it. Let it dwell in your heart and mind. Rebuke the enemy with it. Learn from it. It will nourish you.lvi

Your spiritual growth results from your personally trusting in and on Jesus Christ. “The righteous man shall live by faith” Galatians 3:11 “Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.” (NIV) A life of faith will enable you to trust God increasingly, with every detail of your life, and, to practice the following:

Go to God in prayer daily John 15:7 “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask G whatever you wish, and it will be given you.” NIV Read God’s Word daily- begin with the Gospel of John. Acts 17:11 “Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great R eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” NIV Obey God moment by moment John 14:21 “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by O my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.” NIV Witness for Christ by your life and words Matthew 4:19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” W John 15:8 “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples”. God’s Word admonishes us not to forsake “the assembling of ourselves together...” Hebrews 10:25 “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Several logs burn brightly together; but, put one aside, on the cold hearth, and, the fire goes out. So it is with your relationship with other Christians. If you do not belong to a church, do not wait to be invited. Take the initiative; call the pastor of a nearby church where Christ is honored and, His Word is preached. Start this week, and, make plans to attend regularly. When we are born again, we are not told to stop thinking. We are just told to start thinking a new way. When we are born again, we are not told to stop deciding, and, to stop desiring; we are just told to surrender our will to God and, to decide to do what He desires, according to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

ho can truly know the heart? I will never forget, in medical school, my first

glimpse of a living, beating, human heart, and, the hands of the surgeon intent on preserving life with suture and scalpel. Physicians are privileged to view the most inner parts of the human body, which is “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14) in the image of the Creator (Genesis 1:26). And, although the heart’s wondrous palpitations have always fascinated and worried physicians, medical diagnosis fails to fathom what the Bible calls the thoughts of the heart (Hebrews 4:12), which the LORD himself searches (Jeremiah 17:10). Laënnec’s invention of the stethoscope in 1816 introduced a new method of listening to the patient. The original stethoscope was a pair of connecting hollow wooden tubes, that evolved into the very symbol of medical diagnosis, donned by those to whom the sick would look in hope of being healed. The tubes were designed to be disconnected for perpendicular storage, inside the physician’s top hat, where they formed, interestingly, the shape of a cross. The first sounds audible to Dr. Laënnec, listening through the hollow tube, pressed against his patient’s chest, would have been the respirations and heart beat. The rhythmical passage of air, through the respiratory tract, makes a soft “shhh... shhh...” sound. The metered closure, of heart valves, produces a faster sound, something like “da da... da da...” One can almost imagine the occasional collision of these sounds, in the doctor’s ear. Together, they approximate one of the biblical names of God–El Shaddai–which in Hebrew means Almighty God. As in Psalm 150, “Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.”

Through the lens of modern technology, physicians now monitor cardiac function, in intricate detail. For example, through echocardiography, we discern the complex motions of the heart’s chambers and valves, by the patterns cast by reflected sound waves. Magnetic resonance and computerized tomography yield images of unparalleled anatomical precision. Angiography outlines, in shadows, its vessels and chambers. The human heart, as viewed by these techniques, in cross section, resembles the Hebrew letter, v [sheen]. v is often associated with God’s name, 07706 yDv la [El Shaddai]. How awesome it is to think that God would have imprinted his holy name on the heart of every human being. To the Left: Echocardiogram showing the heart’s four chambers. Let us explore what the v in our hearts could also represent. The focus, of cardiology, is to decipher chest pain and to detect disease, which entered the world with sin. Likewise, the first mention of the heart, in the Bible, is in Genesis 6:5: “The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.” In examining our own hearts, we should not forget that v is also the first letter in 07843 txX [] shechath], which means corrupt. The second occurrence of the word heart 03820 [ble, lev] in the next verse reveals the response of God’s heart to our corruption–”his heart was filled with pain.” Hearts can be hardened. The Hebrew word, 08068 rymiv [shamiyr], meaning thorn or flint, suggests the spiritual rigor mortis to which the sinful heart is inclined. This is the word found in Zechariah 7:12; “They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the LORD Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets.” When Moses proclaimed to the Israelites, “You forgot the God who gave you birth” (Deuteronomy 32:18), he used the verb 07911 xkX [shakach, to forget].

Dare we allow our hearts to forget the Almighty, yDv la la [e El Shaddai]? King David prayed in Psalm 77:18, “Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked.” Malachi (3:2) asked, “But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire.” Ezekiel (21:7) warned that “every heart will melt.” Jeremiah (2:12) prophesied that, because of our rebellion, the wrath of the LORD will cause even the heavens to “shudder with great horror.” This expression derives from the Hebrew word, 08175 r[c [sa’ar], meaning to storm, to shiver, to be afraid. As we pause to consider the holiness of the living God, the word r[c is abbreviated on our mortal hearts. Thanks be to God for not leaving our hearts in perilous turmoil. “He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed” (Psalm 107:29). Psalm 145:18-19 assures us that “the LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.” This cry, 07775 h[wX [shavah], comes from the heart. In the same way Jesus’ disciples cried out to him, when the storm overtook their boat in Matthew 8:24-26. Jesus replied, “ ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.” Messiah Jesus speaks likewise to our hearts: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me” (John 14:1).

It is the heart that, with gladness, recognizes its Savior’s voice. “My heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy” (Psalm 28:7). “I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart” (Psalm 9:1). “In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name” (Psalm 33:21). The Hebrew word in Psalm 33 for rejoice is 08055 xmX [samach].

According to the 08085 [mX [Shema, Deuteronomy 6:4-9], one should “love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments ... are to be upon your hearts.” Moses’ declaration that “the LORD your God will circumcise your hearts” (Deuteronomy 30:6) foreshadows the New Covenant prophesied by Jeremiah (31:33): “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” Ezekiel (11:19) adds: “I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh.” Paul explains the fulfillment of this prophecy in the ministry of the body of Messiah, which is written “with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts” (2 Corinthians 3:3). The LORD “sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father’ “ (Galatians 4:6) and to strengthen us so that Messiah may dwell in our hearts through faith (Ephesians 3:17). Throughout the Torah, Moses instructed the Israelites to keep, or 08104 rmv [shamar, i.e. to hedge about], all the commandments of the LORD. “The word,” he explained (Deuteronomy 30:14), “is very near you; it is . . . in your hearts so you may obey it.” Joshua exhorted, “Yield your hearts to the LORD” (Joshua 24:23). Concerning the righteous, Psalm 37:31 states that, “The law of his God is in his heart; his feet do not slip.” David confessed in Psalm 119:30, “I have set my heart on your laws.” Solomon admonished, “Your hearts must be fully committed to the LORD our God” (1 Kings 8:61). Messiah summarizes the relationship between the heart and the law in this way: “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Through Messiah’s redemptive death as atonement for our sins, King David’s prayer in Psalm 51 becomes reality in the lives of all who believe: “Create in me a pure heart, O God.” As the prophet Isaiah (1:18) foresaw, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” The prophet’s word for snow is 07950 glX [e sheleg]. With the blood of Jesus, the first letter of this word is written on our hearts. The letter v reminds us of what God, in his mercy, can accomplish within us. Unlike most other muscles, the heart beats effortlessly. Although its contractions expend metabolic energy, this requires no conscious exertion. Psalm 119:32 says, “I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free.” I believe this characteristic of the heart is a foretaste of the era of messianic rest symbolized in the 07676 tbX [shabbat, Exodus 20:8], in which the people of God cease from labor on the seventh day and are refreshed. Isaiah anticipated the day of the LORD’s rest in verse 40:31: “Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Jesus, the Messiah, is Lord of the shabbat (Mark 2:28). Jesus beckons, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). John teaches that, by obeying God’s commands, we know that we belong to the truth and can “set our hearts at rest in his presence . . . And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them” (1 John 3:19-24). The Author, of the tB;v [shabbat], has written his invitation for rest, in Hebrew, upon our hearts.. This reading, of the LORD’s handwriting on our hearts, would be incomplete without mention of one more word. “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7). These encouraging words of Rabbi Paul, although written in the Greek language, convey the Hebrew concept of 07965 ~wlX [shalom]. Paul also

exhorts us to “let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts” (Colossians 3:15). “Shalom” connotes much more than the English word, “peace.” Shalom includes a sense of fullness in number, completeness, perfection, security, safety, prosperity, wholeness, soundness, friendship, reconciliation, even health. Shalom is the word David chose to greet Nabal in 1 Samuel 25:6 when he said, “Long life to you! Good health to you and your household! And good health to all that is yours!” “You who seek God, may your hearts live!” (Psalm 69:32). lvii

Stars of Life STARS Of LIFE

(Someone, in the medical field, that carries the gospel with them, as they work)

The very first STAR of LIFE is GOD Himself. He created every thing, by the spoken word. Then, He decided to create man, in His image, out of the dust of the earth. Once the first man, named Adam, was formed, GOD breathed the breath of life into him, and, Adam became a living being. Adam sinned, landing us in the dilemma we’re in—first sin, then sickness and death, and, no one is exempt from either sin or death. Even those who didn’t sin, precisely as Adam did, by disobeying a specific command of God, still had to experience this termination of life, this separation from God. The verdict on that one sin was the death sentence. But, God Himself sent His one and only son, Jesus Christ, to the earth, to die on a wooden cross, for our sins. It is through His blood sacrifice, that gives you and I remission from our sin. Then, Jesus himself went up to heaven, to sit at the right hand of God, the Father, making intercession on our behalf. Jesus also gave us, here on this earth, the power of the Holy Spirit, to walk out what He has asked us, as individuals, to do for Him and His kingdom.

(FLOURISHED FIRST CENTURY) Many doctors have followed Christ but, Luke is the first of whom we have a record. He is the prototype for all Christian men and women, who have cared deeply about the suffering of people and, tried to alleviate their misery by imitating Christ as a physician. More than a doctor, Luke was also an evangelist, a close companion to Paul, in his missionary trips, and, one of the writers through whom God gave us an account of Christ’s life. Luke was the only Gentile to author a book of the Bible.lviii

Now then, let’s do a little review on what we have, when we have a personal relationship with Christ! The moment you received Christ by faith, as an act of your will, many things happened, including the following: 1. Christ came into your life (Revelation 3:20 “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” and Colossians 1:28 “To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.)” NIV 2. Your sins were forgiven (Colossians 1:14 “in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”) NIV 3. You became a child of God (John 1:12 “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God”). NIV 4. You received eternal life (John 5:24 “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.”) NIV 5. You began the great adventure for which God created you (John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full; 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”). J. R. Jude, an American cardiologist, leads a team performing the first external cardiac massage to restart a heart. The U.S. Framingham Heart Study reports a connection between high cholesterol levels and increased risk of heart disease. 1964 Charles T. Dotter introduces the concept of remodeling the artery by means of transluminal angioplasty. 1965 American surgeons DeBakey and Kantrowitz implant mechanical devices to help a diseased heart.

The U.S. Surgeon General's warning, linking smoking with health risks, is added to cigarette packaging. Christian Barnard, a South African surgeon, performs the first whole-heart human to human transplant. Falvaro reports using a saphenous vein graft to perform bypass surgery of a human coronary artery. The balloon-tipped, flow-directed pulmonary artery Swan-Ganz catheter allows bedside right-heart catheterization. Passive smoking is identified as the third leading preventable cause of death in the U.S., and nonsmokers living with smokers are reported to show an increased risk of ischemic heart disease or MI of approximately 30%. The first federal guidance document for interventional cardiology devices, including PTCA, balloon catheters, atherectomy catheters, lasers and intravascular stents, is released.

Combination of thrombolytic therapy, aspirin, and IV followed by oral P-blockers reported to reduce mortality in acute MI. 1994 Coronary stents are approved by the FDA. Appendix B As a Christian in the field of EMS As a Christian in EMS, I believe that Jesus Christ is “The Great Physician”. Jesus was greatly concerned for the sick. He went about healing the sick wherever he was. Not only, was healing a pre-occupation with Jesus, but also, as Christians, we are commanded to make healing our duty, as seen in Matthew 10:8 “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons.” As a Christian in EMS, I believe that hospitals are an explicitly Christian institution and, the idea of Pre-hospital medical care and, the job of EMS are ordained by God Himself, as seen in the following: The first ever recorded rescue breathing (Genesis 2:7) The first ever recorded CPR (1 Kings 17:17-24) The first ever recorded EMS system (see EMT-B book for more info) First responder through definitive care, at his level of training, transported patient to the closest appropriate facility, and, even took care of his paper work and billing. (Luke 10:29-35) Known as the Good Samaritan, where we get the term for our Good Samaritan Law. As a Christian in EMS, I cannot separate my faith, in Jesus Christ, from my every day life, conduct, and speech. As a Christian in EMS, I cannot justify the rendering of medical care: for only those who love me, aiding only my friends, and, praying only for fellow Christians. But, I must uphold to God’s Standard of Care, in the healing of the whole person: Body, Soul, Mind and Spirit. As a Christian in EMS, I have no desire to carry the name of the Son of God, to the level of my own base intentions. As a Christian in EMS, I aspire to be like Him, to live on unseen resources by faith, to tap the unlimited supply of His love through the life of His indwelling Holy Spirit, to emerge from my moral conflicts “more than a conqueror” through His power, and, to rise above all earthly standards, to the completeness of His perfection. As a Christian in EMS, I acknowledge that this is an impossible quest, but, accept the challenge of its impossibility, in the knowledge that its pursuit will force me to rest on Him.

Appendix B

As a Christian in EMS, I desire no little challenges, expect no un-rippled seas, and abandon all personal “rights” for the ultimate goal of ministering (Physical and Spiritual healing) to all patients that I come in contact with and their families - to the best of my abilities. As a Christian in EMS, I consider that it is not God’s will for my life to have a quality of life that is indistinguishable from unbelieving men and common Christians. As a Christian in EMS, my present failure, to fulfill these intentions, merely proves that God isn’t finished re-shaping my raw materials.

Getting to Know the Author: Rev. CHRISTOPHER A. CREDLE EMT-PARAMEDIC, BCBT

Chris grew up in a house that ended up being a Christian halfway house for runaways, druggies, prostitutes, ex-cons, the unlovable & untouchables. Both of his parents were involved in the medical field and in ministry. Chris was born-again and water baptized, over the Easter holidays, in 1979, after his grandfather died, Easter morning. Chris knew from an early age that GOD had a calling for him for the ministry, and, his fascination, with the medical field and EMS, started during a Boy Scout fall camporee, while getting his First Aid skill award. The local county EMS system taught the First Aid class that Chris attended, when he was eleven years old. To add to the visual aid and hands-on experience, the local EMS brought their Ambulance. After that First Aid class, Chris knew that EMS was what he wanted to do: help people and drive that big ambulance with the lights and sirens; what a great way to minister to people. Chris continued in scouting and, obtained the rank of Eagle Scout with three palms, and, was appointed Junior Assistant Scout Master in 1984, all before he turned fourteen years old. Through scouting and other church related youth organizations, Chris’s love for GOD and medical missions grew. Chris went on his first mission’s trip, in the summer of 1987, to Germany, with Ambassadors in Mission (AIM). In October 1987, Chris was awarded the Gold Medal of Achievement Award from the Assemblies of God’s boys program called the Royal Rangers. Chris became involved with EMS in 1985 in a Rescue/EMS Explorer Post. In the fall of 1987, he went to Basic EMT class at night, while doing his senior year in high school. In the fall of 1988, Chris attended a Discipleship Training School (DTS), at Pacific and Asia Christian University on the Big Island of Hawaii. PACU is now known as the University of the Nations. U of N is the university for Youth With A Mission (YWAM). Chris's course of study was Discipleship and Cross Cultural Missions {To Know GOD and make Him Known}. After the lecture phase of the DTS, Chris completed a required Field Outreach with Jackie Pullenger Ministries in Hong Kong and main land China (the team he was on got in trouble for smuggling Bibles into main land China). Chris returned home after his DTS, to continue in his medical training. While working at Duke University Medical Center, over the late summer of 1989, in Respiratory Care Services, as an EMTTransporter/Messenger, Chris returned to EMT class for his Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate 1989. Then, in the fall of 1990, Chris started his class for Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic. Paramedic class went on until late fall 1991. Also in 1991, Chris became an ordained minister, with the Jameson Evangelistic Association. Then, in the spring of 1992, Chris became an EMT-Paramedic.

Getting to Know the Author

He has been in ministry for over fifteen years, all the while maintaining a full-time job in EMS. While in ministry, Chris has worked as an EMS Chaplain, missionary, college & career pastor, and, along with his wife, as singlesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; ministers and youthsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; pastors. While in EMS, Chris worked in and for both large cities with major universities, (Durham County with DUKE University and Orange County with UNC), with high call volumes and the rural EMS systems, with low call volumes. Chris is a Board Certified Belief Therapist (CBT) through the Therapon Institute. He has earned his Associate of Religious Arts (Missiology) from Logos Christian College, in February of 2000 and has also earned his Associate of Theology from Christian Life School of Theology. In November 2002, Chris earned his Bachelor of Theology degree, from Christian Life School of Theology. In November 2005, Chris earned his Master of Theology degree, from Christian Life School of Theology. In August 2006, Chris earned his Master of Biblical Counseling degree from Therapon University. Chris is currently working on his Ph.D. in Biblical Counseling, in his spare time. In 2003, Chris and Amy Credle started SoulMedic Ministries, a multi-faceted ministry to reach out to men and women of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), with the Gospel. The goal is to bring Chaplains into a working role in Emergency Medical Services, and, to provide those in EMS with Bible study tools, relevant to Emergency Medical Service Providers.
