INTRODUCTION
ROAD TO RIO It is time for the fifteenth Paralympic Summer Games. For the first time the games will be held in South America. Brazil is the host nation and Rio de Janeiro, the city where everything will happen. The Swedish team have been preparing for long, but it was only just over 50 days before the opening of the games that all of the team were announced, consisting of 54 Paralympians who will participate in 14 different sports. Out of a Swedish perspective this has only happened once before, in Atlanta in 1996. As everyone knows, the Paralympic development has been huge since. The number of participating nations has increased by more than 60% and the number of active has increased by over 30%. As a result, Paralympics have become a much tougher competition and it requires significantly more of the athletes in order to even get a place in the games for an opportunity to fight for medals. Against this background, I feel proud of the role as Chef de Mission for a team I have great hopes for. We have many strong individuals and a great mix of both experienced Paralympians as first-time participants. The high performance requirements to qualify provides more chances for medals, but we know that the margins will be small. Everything has to get just right at this one time. Before the last Summer Games in London, we talked about a new golden generation. We were referring to all our young athletes with great potential. That they would get in the fight for medals. Several of them did go all the way. Now, another four years down the same track, new names have been added to that golden generation and it have continued to grow in strength and numbers. Who will make it this time is impossible to know, but we hope for many successful Paralympics premieres in Rio. At the same time we don’t underestimate the value of getting the experience and inspiration of participating this time, to create incentives for a long-term race against upcoming games.
WILLPOWER 2
At the conclusion September 18, we know the outcome of the Swedish team in these games. An important element is the support they can get active before and during their contestants. So a call to all of you who are around our active regardless of whether you are on location in Rio or follow races through the media. Keep your fingers crossed and cheer as much as you can! Our Paralympians will do everything they can with the help of their Willpower! Hans SäfstrÜm CdM 3

ABOUT THE COMPETITION Practised by athletes with cerebral palsy, paraplegics, quadriplegics, amputees, people with dysfunctional and progressive diseases and multiple impairments, Paralympic archery has the same goal as the Olympic discipline: shoot arrows onto a 10-circle target from a distance of 70m using a recurve bow, or from 50m using a compound bow.

SEPTEMBER
BOWS AND ARROWS were used for hunting and war 10,000 years ago, but firearms made them obsolete for military purposes. As a sport, however, the popularity of archery has continued to grow. Today, archery is practised in approximately 150 countries. It was the only sport in the Stoke Mandeville Games, the precursor of the Paralympic Games, in 1948, and has been on the Paralympic programme since its first edition, at Rome 1960.

There are competitions for the visually, intellectually and physically impaired – each with functional classifications to ensure equality among competitors. On account of the athletes’ classifications, competition names are followed by a code (letter + number). The letter used for a track competition is T (from the English word track). The letter F is used for field or jump events (from the English word field). The numbering indicates the athlete’s degree of impairment:

SEPTEMBER
It is believed boccia originated in Ancient Greece, with contestants throwing large stones at a target rock. The sport was transformed in 16th-century Italy, and since then its popularity has spread worldwide. Playing boccia requires a skilful combination of control, precision and concentration, as well as a keen tactical nous.

PROGRAMME*
From North America, all the way to Polynesia and even Greenland, kayaks have been used for different purposes throughout history. Originally intended for hunting and fishing, they were made with animal fur stretched over a wooden frame. Canoe races became more popular in the early 20th century, and the 1930s were crucial to boosting their popularity.

SEPTEMBER
Cycling for athletes with an impairment originated in the early 1980s. Road competitions were introduced in the New York/Stoke Mandeville 1984 Paralympic Games programme, with events for competitors with cerebral palsy. Four years later, in Seoul, cyclists with other types of impairments – cerebral palsy and amputees/ les autres, were also included. Visually impaired athletes made their debut at the Barcelona 1992 Games.

PROGRAMME*
Equestrianism has existed for over 2,000 years, ever since the Greeks started training their horses in preparation for war. In the Middle Ages, it continued being developed as a military exercise, with dressage, cross country and jumping tests, aiming to reflect the variety of challenges that horses face in the army.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION As in the case of football 5-a-side, the goalball ball has bells in it. Teams consist of three starting line-up players and three on the bench, all blindfolded. The game is divided into two 12-minute halves, and the winner is the team that scores the most goals. Throws must be low or bouncing and must always touch certain areas of the pitch. Players are both attackers and defenders.
BARRA OLYMPIA PARK
The width of the goal is the same as the width of the pitch (9m x 1.30m). Therefore, players position themselves in the three areas they PROGRAMME* must defend: left wing, right wing and central or pivot position. There is no contact between SEPTEMBER SESSIONS adversaries, which makes the game safer for the 07 requires WED players. Attacking strength, since the 09:00 13:15 ball weighs 1.25kg. 08 THU

First introduced in 1946, goalball was created to assist in the rehabilitation of veterans with a visual impairment. Its popularity has only grown since then: the sport is currently practised in 85 countries. It debuted in the Paralympic Games at Toronto 1976, as a demonstration sport. Since then, goalball has been ever present at all editions of the Games.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION Only visually impaired athletes compete in Para- lympic judo. For this reason, classification is based on functional, rather than on medical criteria. One of the biggest benefits afforded by Paralympic judo is teaching the athlete to fall properly – since the sport helps them move and position themselves correctly, and they end up being able to avoid common, daily accidents.

Based on jujutsu, it was developed by educator Jigoro Kano and consolidated as a sport in the late 19th century. Judo made its first appearance at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games. It debuted in the Paralympic programme in Seoul 1988, and women were allowed into the competition from Athens 2004. Judo is the only martial art present in the Paralympic programme.
Athletes are divided into three classes, all starting with the letter B (for blind):

Sailboat racing first appeared in the 17th century, in the Netherlands. The practice grew in England, when King Charles II, a great sailor, was restored to the throne. The sport was already well established when, in 1851, the schooner America crossed the Atlantic, departing from the United States, and won the race at the Isle of Wight – overcoming British ships and winning the trophy currently known as the America’s Cup. Sailing events debuted at the Atlanta 1996 Paralympic Games, but as a demonstration only. The sport became a medal event at Sydney 2000.

The visually impaired rely on the help of the tapper, an assistant who uses a pole fitted with a cushioned end to let them know when they are near the edges of the pool. Tappers are required for S11 classes and are optional for the S12 and S13 classes. S11 athletes must swim wearing black goggles to keep a swimmer with some vision fromPROGRAMME* having an advantage over others who are completely blind.

SEPTEMBER
Table tennis was created in the 19th century in Great Britain, and was played by aristocratic families. In its early days, when it came to be known as wiff-waff, cigar boxes were used as rackets and books served as a net. Both the equipment and the rules had evolved considerably when the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) was established, in 1926.

First introduced in 1977, in Winnipeg, Canada, wheelchair rugby was the initiative of a group of quadriplegic athletes seeking alternatives to wheelchair basketball. It was initially named murderball because of the sudden impact between players.

The first international championship was held in 1982, with teams from Canada and the United States. Four years later, wheelchair rugby debuted at the Atlanta 1996 Paralympic Games as a demonstration sport. At Sydney 2000, it became part of the official programme. Since then, it has featured at all editions of the Paralympic Games and is already guaranteed at Tokyo 2020.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION Wheelchair rugby is a dynamic, heavy contact sport. Crashing is allowed and even encouraged. The game combines elements of rugby, basketball and volleyball, and is played by mixed teams. The teams are formed by four players and there are eight players on the bench, all quadriplegic or with impairments in all four limbs. The objective is to accumulate as many goals as possible. Points are scored when a player carries the ball across the goal line.

Although Tennis is believed to have its origins in the 13th century, the modern form of the sport really developed during the late 1800s. In 1873, an English army major by the name of Walter Clopton Wingfield designed, patented and marketed a version of real tennis that could be played outdoors on a lawn. Roughly a century later, Wheelchair Tennis was invented in the United States by Brad Parks, who had been experimenting with Tennis as a recreational therapy after he was injured in a freestyle skiing competition. After featuring as an exhibition sport at the Seoul 1988 Paralympic Games, the sport was introduced as a full-medal event at Barcelona 1992, and has featured at every Games since.

CONCLUDING REMARKS
BOOST OUR WILLPOWER
The Paralympic Games is an enormous competition. It is the third largest sport event in the world today – after the Olympic games and the World Championships in football. Because of that the games in Rio will get the attention from media all over the world. Public service in Sweden will broadcast more than 250 hours. It gives Paralympics the opportunity to showcase the most exciting games and the heart of it all – our Paralympians. We know a big audience in Sweden expects the best, we’ll all try to live up to the expectations. We are proud to have such generous sponsors. Without them all of this would be impossible. They help us support our athletes in the best possible way. We are also happy with their great interest in our organisations thrive forward. Our sponsors are our true supporters, and many more companies contact us and want to be a part of our journey. We are very happy about that. We´re also proud to see the way our games break down barriers. The Paralympics is a true change maker. It´s not only changing the way the public look upon what is possible, it is actually changing the possibilities. To organize an event like the Paralympic games you have to be able to make the host city accessible. And by doing that the organizers show that sport can be accessible for everyone. I hope that will inspire Swedish cities to do a lot better in welcoming people with disabilities to their sport arenas. It takes a lot of willpower to be an athlete with a disability. Without the willpower Paralympics wouldn’t be. Without hundreds and thousands of hours with tough training from healthy athletes saying “Yes I can!” there wouldn´t be anything to see. But it is together we can make it happen. The athletes, the trainers, the sponsors and everyone cheering by their TV or mobile phone, to reach our goals in Rio we are all parts of the event. Now help us by cheering for the Swedish team and boost our willpower! Margareta Israelsson President 78
