The Alsace Valleys In the north of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park, at the gates of the Donon massif and the vineyards of Alsace, the minerals of the sandstone Vosges plateau have been exploited for several centuries. In the Middle Ages, the silver mines brought prosperity to certain valleys while the monuments and houses in many a town and village were built with material from the sandstone quarries.
The Weiss valley
Farming is an ever-present feature of the landscapes of the Fave and Morthe valleys, situated between the summits of the Vosges mountains and Saint-DiĂŠ-des-Vosges. Indeed, agriculture continues to thrive in the area, as can be seen from the characteristic sandstone farmhouses in the outlying villages and hamlets.
