Letter from the Editor While it’s easy to get caught up in the stress that life may bring, it’s important to take the time to reflect on what makes you grateful. This month, thoughts of family, friends, and thanks abound. I’m thankful every day for the wonderful people in my life, and I strive to never take them for granted. Recently, I discovered that my “extended family,” my dear group of friends, will be expanding around springtime with the addition of quite a few babies. I’m thankful for the happiness this adventure brings them, too! This year, a special and rare event brings Hanukkah and Thanksgiving to a meeting point. As menorah candles are lit in remembrance of a time long ago for which thanks are still given, families also gather to celebrate and express gratitude during Thanksgiving. PARENTGUIDE News is particularly thankful for its readers, and to show our appreciation, we’re giving you the chance to win the items featured in our gift guide for parents. Turn to “Gift Checklist” for details on how to enter. You’re also invited to participate in the “Smiling Faces Photo Contest” and our many Facebook contests at www.facebook.com/parentguidenews for even more chances to win fantastic prizes.

Preschool Insight on your options. As an education director of a private preschool in Manhattan, I lead year-round tours for families. I’m often asked by parents as to what sets our school apart from the many others in our area — one of the essential pieces of information you should also obtain when choosing a preschool for your child. There are likely many thriving and nurturing preschools in your area. In your research, you’ll find options ranging from small private schools, Head Start programs, and nonprofits to large schools, which offer programs for 2, 3, and 4 year olds. Each preschool has its own unique personality and philosophy to meet differing family needs. I often advise parents to tour a handful of preschools when deciding what is important to their family unit. When browsing, consider where your child will be most likely to thrive and make social connections. Take note as to where you feel that instant sense of comfort, intimacy, and security. Other considerations to make could revolve around faculty size, extracurricular activities, availability of extended hours, and program philosophies. The National Association for the Education of Young Children has additional tips for questions to ask and observations to make when touring at www.naeyc.org. It educates parents about the features of accredited schools, and even if you’re not considering one, the website contains invaluable information about the preschool selection process. Considering a small preschool has its benefits. There is a sense of family among staff, parents, and the children that is undeniable. Feelings of true caring and loving relationships are fostered during school events, trips, and meetings. Getting to know each parent, grandparent, cousin, aunt, and uncle enables the school community to become part of an extended family. Staff members at small preschools have the ability to notice how even minor changes may affect a child or a family. They have the opportunity to collaborate with parents on important decisions and take caregivers’ feelings into account. Teachers can also learn about the individual child and cater to his particular learning style and interests. Regardless of school size, it’s important for educators to honor each child as if he were their own to cherish. I am extremely grateful to personally be a part of a smaller preschool community where I walk into a room and each child knows me by my first name. Hearing “Ms. Jennifer” being called brings a warmth to my heart that wakes up my daily passion for early childhood education. I hope all parents find a “gem” during their search for a preschool and have the opportunity to obtain the happiness I’ve experienced when working with a wonderful school. Jennifer Denza is the co-owner and director of The Kid’s Korner Preschool in Manhattan, NY. She has been an educator and director for 22 years. Denza is also mom to two boys and lives with her family in Rockland, NY. Learn more about The Kid’s Corner Preschool at www.thekidskornerpreschool.com. 10 I parentguide News I November 2013

Addressing speech-language impairments. by Erica L. Fener, Ph.D.

D

o you think your child exhibits language impairments and developmental delays? If so, it’s important to intervene early. Early intervention for children with language impairments and developmental delays may make the difference between having an impairment that is mild – or perhaps even nonexistent after interventions – to having one that causes difficulty throughout his or her life.

k

What should you do if you think your child has language impairments and developmental delays? Have your child evaluated as early as possible.

If you think your child exhibits delays compared to other children his or her age, arrange for a professional evaluation as soon as possible. Small children generally overcome developmental or speech delays with early intervention much more easily than older children, so it’s imperative that you get help as early as possible.

k

k

Determine other causes for speech or language delay.

The specialist who evaluates your child determines whether other causes for language impairments or development delays may be present. These may include intellectual disabilities, hearing loss that cannot be corrected with surgery or other interventions, auditory processing disorders (whereby children have a problem decoding speech sounds), autism, speech apraxia, and so forth. Once the cause(s) of the child’s speech/ language/developmental difficulties are diagnosed, a proper therapeutic course to correct them may be established and carried out.

Address any physical deterrents to proper speech and language as soon as possible.

If your child’s hearing is impaired but correctable, take care of this as soon as possible. For example, if your child has a hearing difficulty that experts say is fixable with surgery, such as placing tubes in the ears to ensure fluid drainage, then have procedure done as soon as you can. If your child can’t properly hear, he can’t properly develop language; early surgical or other intervention that restores hearing encourages language development on a normal trajectory.

12 I parentguide News I November 2013

If your child has a cleft palate, or other facial structural abnormality that makes speech difficult, your doctor will probably recommend correction shortly after birth. If your child cannot physically create proper speech, even though he may be perfectly “normal” in every other way, no amount of standard speech therapy will help. Correcting physical difficulties as early as possible ensures that you’re making a difference for your child. parentguidenews.com

k

Consistency is important, too.

Depending on your child’s impairment, professionals will suggest programs to follow at home. They will also show you how to interact with your child so that speech is something with which he’s “forced” to engage. Parents often unwittingly “help” their children by letting them use noises or signals instead of actual speech to communicate wants and needs. Assisting children with language impairments and developmental delays is not easy, but coddling or otherwise enabling your child’s unwillingness to challenge himself is certainly ill advised.

k

Proof

Early intervention is the key to truly effective therapy.

It’s important to note that your child should not be “punished” for speaking incorrectly. Instead, ask your child’s speech therapist or other professional to show you how to model correct speech around your child, and then entice him to respond appropriately. Similarly, playing games, singing songs, and reading books are all fun ways to develop language without making it seem like work. As a parent, it all falls to you, but the therapies you follow don’t have to be “necessary evils.” Instead, they can be fun ways to develop methods that fully engage your child and make him want to speak and communicate with others more effectively.

To make the most difference in your child’s life, make sure therapy and other interventions occur as early as possible. Young brains are malleable brains, and children who receive the proper intervention right away experience much less difficulty later in life – and may even completely recover depending on the disorder – as compared to older children.

ommunication disorders are among the most common disabilities in the United States. Roughly 40 million Americans have difficulty speaking or hearing — many of them are children. In fact, speech disorders affect 8 to 9 percent of young children, and hearing loss affects two in every 100 children. Many other children are affected by additional medical or developmental disorders that hamper their ability to communicate. These disorders are more serious than many parents realize. They may take academic, behavioral, emotional, and social tolls on a child. They can also impact the entire family by requiring established routines, straining relationships, and challenging interactions among all members of the household. Many of these struggles are unnecessary as communication disorders are treatable. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of the public is aware of the signs of communication disorders and the importance of early detection according to a recent poll of speech-language pathologists and audiologists (the professionals who treat these disorders). To address this, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) recently launched the Identify the Signs campaign, which offers

information and resources for identifying and getting help with communication disorders. Here are just some of the helpful tips available at www.identifythesigns.org.

T

ypes of Communications Disorders

A variety of conditions fall under the umbrella of “communication disorders. Categories include:

Speech/Language Disorders

When a child has trouble understanding others (receptive language), or completely sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings (expressive language), then she has a language disorder. When a child is unable to correctly or fluently produce speech sounds, or has problems with her voice, then she has a speech disorder. Speech and language disorders include stuttering, selective mutism (inability to speak in certain situations), and childhood apraxia of speech (a motor speech disorder where the brain has difficulty coordinating the muscle movements necessary to speak).

Hearing Loss

Different types of hearing loss and degrees of severity exist. Hearing loss can be congenital (present at birth) or acquired. One common

illness in children that involves inflammation in the middle ear (usually associated with fluid buildup) is called otitis media, and it can result in hearing loss. This hearing loss can be permanent. Otitis media is the most frequently diagnosed disease in infants and young children; 75 percent of young children will experience at least one episode of it by their third birthday. The more frequent the episodes, the more likely permanent hearing damage will occur.

Medical/Developmental Disorders

Many parents wait to act upon first noticing symptoms in their children. More than one-third of moms and dads (36 percent) will wait a year or longer to take action in the case of speech delay, and 31 percent of parents wait six months to one year for suspected hearing loss. Parents should never delay an assessment if they suspect a problem. Studies have shown that children who receive services prior to age 3 have better outcomes than those receiving services after age 5.

Among the resources at www.identifythesigns.org is a searchable list of certified providers by geographic area under the “Find a Professional” section of the website. Free services are also available to schoolage children through public school systems. Contact the local public school district for information about early intervention programs.

Autism is in large part characterized by problems with communication and social skills. Other medical or developmental conditions that may result in communication problems include attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and traumatic brain injury.

Juvenile Diabetes Facing your child’s diagnosis as a family.

By M. Maitland DeLand, M.D.

E

ach year, more than 15,000 children are diagnosed with juvenile (Type 1) diabetes, and November is recognized as an awareness month for this condition in the United States. With juvenile diabetes, the pancreatic islet cells that make insulin are destroyed by the immune system; no insulin is made by the pancreas internally and must be administered externally. All parents should be aware of the warning signs that accompany Type 1 diabetes. A major change in disposition, energy level, or appearance should always be a cause for concern. Other symptoms can include: • Extreme thirst and frequent urination • Difficulty concentrating or holding attention • Drowsiness or lethargy • Increased appetite • Sudden weight loss • Sudden vision changes • Sugar in the urine • Fruity odor on the breath • Heavy or labored breathing • Stupor or unconsciousness If your child exhibits some or all of these symptoms, go to a physician immediately. The doctor may perform a random blood sugar test or a glycated hemoglobin (A1C) test, which determines blood sugar average throughout two or three months. If these result in a positive diagnosis, you should consult with your pediatrician and your endocrinologist. You should also take the time to prepare a thoughtful, compassionate discussion with your child about his diagnosis. Your response will serve as a guideline for how your child will react. Calmly provide all the information you can. Reinforce the facts and guidelines discussed by your physician. All caregivers and family members should provide a uniform message and instructions. Emphasize the positive while maintaining the serious nature of the situation. Because there is no cure for Type 1 diabetes, you should focus on the treatments that are available. Insulin is not a cure, but it does help manage the disease. Your child might be afraid that he will be unable to play or go to school, so help him to understand that the insulin will help with living a normal life. Have a family member demonstrate an example of taking medicine as part of a daily routine (like grandpa and his blood pressure pills) to de-stigmatize this new responsibility. It may be a shift for your family to start regularly eating healthy foods, but the importance of a nutritious diet for your child cannot be understated. Instill the value of healthy eating right at the onset of diagnosis. your needs, your neighborhood

IR_Nov

Encouraging the entire family to practice healthy eating habits will prevent your child from feeling left out or viewing healthy food as a punishment. Counting carbohydrates (sugars, starches) to determine proper insulin dosages can become a game. (For example, ask your child, “How many carbohydrates are in one half-cup of mashed potatoes? Fifteen? You’re right!”) Encourage your child to learn carbohydrate counts with you. Look at the labels of snacks and other foods and remember portions. It may not be an easy habit to pick up, but it’s imperative for your child with juvenile diabetes, and it will benefit the whole family. Regular exercise is also important and a natural way to help regulate diabetes. If your family time is usually spent in front of the TV, switch to playing outside. Family bike rides, active games, or simple walks around the neighborhood will make everyone healthier, help relieve stress, and provide a new way to bond. You want your child to view a commitment to diet and exercise as positive asset, not a consequence of being sick. Monitoring blood sugar is often the hardest adjustment for a child. Again, positioning it as a game (“Let’s see what your glucose number is!”) instead of a burden may make it easier in the beginning. Spend as much time as it takes for your child to feel comfortable doing the finger prick to test her sugar levels. You might even have every family member perform a test to show your child that your family is “in this” together. Finally, educate your child on the signs of low blood sugar, such as shaking, sweatiness, hunger, weakness, being lightheaded, headaches, fatigue, blurred vision, or rapid heart rate. When these symptoms occur, your child should drink fruit juice or another source of sugar and retest her blood sugar in 15 minutes, repeating this process until the reading is normal. Make sure your child is always prepared by carrying a source of fast-acting sugar at all times, as well as a glucagon emergency kit. Facing juvenile diabetes is all about preparation and education. As both a doctor and mother, I have learned that children have a natural curiosity and a resilience that often surprises adults. With support and the tips above, living with juvenile diabetes can be manageable for you, your child, and your entire family.

The holiday season is just gearing up. With school, work, and juggling the family schedule, it can be hard for parents to find the time or extra help to creatively plan a birthday party. So, in a world where digital tools can aid in a time crunch, the best thing to do is take your planning online. Here are some great tech tips to help you make the most of party-planning activities.

DIGITAL Tricked-out tech for your next fiesta.

Some parents can’t find a moment to get into planning mode with kids at play in the background. In these times, enlist their help! Let your child become the main planner for his birthday bash. Discover fun ways to send guests visual invitations online. With so many interactive, digital invitations to customize through an array of companies, like PercyVites, Evite, Paperless Post and more, it’s easy to get your child involved in the planning process. He can choose from any number of invitation designs, whether they include cartoons, are interactive, or showcase personal photos. Inviting partygoers via the Web also ensures you don’t have to make any return trips to the post office if you accidentally leave someone off the guest list. Plus, keeping track of responses is a breeze thanks to built-in programs at many invite sites. Still a traditionalist at heart? Use a site like Zazzle.com or Snapfish.com to put together and print creative cards. Pick a pre-made graphic or upload pics of the birthday child.

Remember with Pinterest

Even when we’re super busy, we always find some time to surf the Net, so make sites like Pinterest.com work for you! This DIY haven has tons of ideas for party games and activities. View thousands of ideas for whipping up simple and affordable decorations, must-have menu items, and take-home treats. With Pinterest, you can also keep track of the party ideas and resources you like on a virtual inspiration “board.” Once you’re ready to pull everything together, you’ll have quick access to your digital concept kit. Worry no more about where you last saw that cute cake recipe you loved, or the party outfit your child adored!

Themed for Ease

It’s always easier to decorate when there’s a theme! If your child is older, he’s likely to already have a sense of what characters or topics he most wants his party to include. Whether you’re looking for paper goods relating to dinosaurs or a beloved TV personality, you’ll find shopping online can not only secure the best prices, but also obtain the widest variety of options. “Printables” in the chosen theme offer another way to personalize your child’s party. Search on sites like www.pbs.org for popular characters, such as Caillou and Arthur, and download images to print for party hats and decor. Suggestions for birthday bash activities may be found there, too. Putting together a Halloween or 1950s party? Sites like The TomKat Studio (www.shoptomkat.com) and Catch My Party (www.catchmyparty.com) additionally have creative printouts to decorate the cake and dessert table or liven up party favors.

Name that Tune

It’s always a party when there’s music around! And at a kids’ party, it’s more fun when you don’t have to worry about inappropriate words blasting into the ears of young party guests. With music easy to seek and download online, parents can create a select list of specific tunes or even the kid-friendly versions of popular songs.

You Ought to be in Pictures

Who doesn’t like seeing himself in pictures having fun? All parents have several disks worth of images saved of their kids playing with friends and at gatherings. Be creative and reuse those images in a slideshow that plays continuously in a room where the guests gather. Thanks to Bluetooth technology, parents can also hook their cameras up to a portable printer, such as the Canon Pixma iP100, and print images of guests within minutes of taking them. More of an eco-friendly family? Send a photo compilation video via e-mail to guests post party.

Food on the Go

Sometimes parents just aren’t sure what to serve during a kids’ party. If there are parents and kids joining in, it’s easy to offer go-to favorites, such as pizza and macaroni and cheese. If you have time, get creative with food decisions! Refer to sites like Spoonful.com for ideas. Try recipes for snacks like fruit kabobs and heart-shape, mini sandwiches — things that can be easily held by little fingers. Julie Steiner is the founder and president of Percy3D, a video personalization platform that powers immersive technology products such as PercyVites digital party invitations. PercyVites uses the same 3-D visual effects technology seen in movies. It allows consumers to insert messages and images into the animated world of licensed characters like Caillou, Johnny Test, and Arthur. The end product produces interactive party invitations, thank you notes, and party photo compilations in the form of short, animated video clips. Visit www.percyvites.com to learn more.

Nine Tips

Nesting for

Projects to Tackle Before Baby Arrives.

by Princess Ivana Pignatelli Aragona Cortes

Y

ou couldn’t be more excited about the new year ahead, because you’ve gotten some wonderful news: You’re going to be a mother in 2014! Right now you’re probably daydreaming about chubby cheeks, adorable onesies, and the bundle of joy you’ll be holding in your arms this time next year. You may also be feeling the urge to clean, organize, de-clutter, and redecorate. Congratulations: You’re nesting! In other words, you’re feeling the desire to prepare your home for the new arrival. Nesting is an important “stage” of pregnancy, and I know this from experience. I’m a modern-day princess, but I come from modest means and met my Italian Prince Charming, Adriano Pignatelli Aragona Cortes, Prince of the Holy Roman Empire, while on scholarship at Pepperdine University. Being a princess has given me access to great expertise, but I’m adamant that the most important choices I have made (and that you will make!) as a parent have little to do with money. Instead, they have everything to do with educating yourself, trusting your instincts, and eventually, paying attention to your child’s signals. Here are nine of my nesting tips to take into account:

1 2

Put paperwork in order. You might not think of paperwork as being a nesting activity, but even more important than a well-decorated nursery and organized closet are your child’s medical needs and daily care. Find a pediatrician, make sure your insurance is in order, and look into pre-admitting if you’re giving birth in a hospital. Tackle your budget. The exact amount of your baby-related budget varies depending on your personal choices, where you live, whether or not you’re a first-time parent, and much more. Do your best to figure up how much money you’ll spend on baby paraphernalia, during maternity leave, for future daycare, etc. If you’ll be a stay-at-home mom and you’re currently working, think about how the loss of income will impact your family. Factor in new expenses like diapers and formula.

28 I parentguide News I November 2013

3

Organize. You’re probably feeling the urge to organize everything: the pantry, your closet, the garage, your DVD collection, and of course, the baby’s room. Take a step back and prioritize the projects. Besides the ones that involve your baby’s room, clothes, and gear, I recommend cleaning out kitchen cabinets to make room for baby supplies. Also clean out junk drawers so that you’ll be able to easily locate things like screwdrivers, batteries, and other essentials for building baby toys and accessories.

4 5 6

Follow the fingertip rule. In other words, when you’re organizing and de-cluttering, keep the most important things at your fingertips. With a new baby, space is at a premium, so get tough and clean out things you rarely use. Put these items in big plastic tubs and store them out of the way. Get low. Look at your home from a baby’s point of view. Clean or replace carpets, change the air filters, get a new vacuum bag, etc., to improve the air quality in your house and make the floors a safe place to play. Since it will be a little while before your baby becomes mobile, you can hold off on baby-proofing the entire house. Finish baby’s room. Decorating, organizing, and stocking the baby’s room is a favorite activity for most soon-to-be moms. Get started as early as you want, and tweak to your heart’s content. I really enjoyed painting, getting the crib assembled, and organizing all of those precious onesies. parentguidenews.com SK-November 2013

7 8

Take care of any pesky chores you’ve been putting off. They’re not things you’re going to have the time, energy, and mental clarity to tackle with a newborn in the house. Figure out daycare options, take the car in for a tune-up, and get your gutters cleaned.

9

Pencil in some time for yourself. This might be the most important nesting practice of all: Making sure that you are in order and at peace. It’s natural for moms and moms-to-be to put others’ needs first. But remember, this is the calm before the proverbial storm. Schedule a pedicure. Read a book. If there’s time, sign up for a class you’ve been wanting to take.

Get help. The fact is, you can’t do it all. In some instances, such as heavy lifting and cleaning with strong chemicals, or if you’re on bed rest, doing it all might harm you and/or your baby. That’s why I encourage you to ask for or hire help. If you want to rearrange a room, paint, or deep419 clean Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10016 • 212-213-8840 • Fax 212-447-7734 your house, for example, your peace of mind alone might be worth TO: the cost FAX # of hiring someone. If your budget is tight, but there’s work to be done, try FROM: ISSUE DATE: to enlist friends and extended family.

PROOF

Ultimately, smart nesting is all about planning, prioritizing, and ensuring you’re comfortable bringing your baby home. Now’s the time to tie up all of those loose ends before your bundle of joy arrives!

Family-Friendly France Exploring the romantic, European country. by Kara Mayer Robinson France has so much for families: a sprawling countryside, cultural treasures, gourmet foods, and an enchanting language. Spend a week there, and your kids will return with a multitude of memories, a world awareness, and maybe even a budding French vocabulary. Where to Go You’d need months (years, really) to explore all the regions of France. If you have a week or two, this is a good start.

Paris, Île de France While it’s true that the City of Light is an ideal, romantic getaway, why

not let your kids fall in love, too? They’ll be enchanted climbing the spiral stairs up the Arc de Triomphe, scaling the Eiffel Tower, seeing Notre Dame Cathedral, and cruising down the Seine. The Louvre isn’t mandatory — big and overwhelming are understatements — but popping in to see the Mona Lisa is a snap if you buy tickets in advance. Note: Kids get free admission to most Paris museums. Essential Paris can be found in its captivating parks: the Jardin des Tuileries and Jardin du Luxembourg. Check out the playgrounds’play structures only found overseas, teach your kids how to play the ring-and-baton game as they ride antique carousels, and watch them revel in the fun of pushing miniature wooden boats across a pond as you sit peacefully in enchanting surroundings.

Normandy Dotted along miles of winding, country roads throughout this north-

western region are local farms and guesthouses called chambres d’hôtes, where host families teach you about local traditions, cook for you, and happily let your kids run free on their farmland. Staying here makes you feel like a local rather than a tourist, and it’s through the eyes of your hosts that your family can gain a truer understanding of the French culture. Don’t miss the bounty of Normandy’s specialty foods that have major kid appeal, like galettes (crêpes), apple cider, and teurgoule (creamy rice pudding). For an impactful experience, visit the 50-mile stretch of coastline where, in 1944’s D-Day invasion, more than 100,000 soldiers began the march across Europe to defeat Hitler. Don’t miss the Normandy Ameri-

can Cemetery and Memorial, where there are 9,387 graves of American soldiers perched on a hill overlooking the expansive Omaha Beach.

French Alps For the French, the Alps are the place to be during the holidays. The Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur regions are filled with ski chalets, lakeside villages, and bustling cities. Annecy, a charming, lakeside town at the foot of the Alps, is sure

to please the whole family with stunning mountain views, a 7,000acre lake, ancient buildings, and cafés lining pedestrian walkways and river canals. Nearby Chamonix, a resort town at the base of Mont Blanc, is in its glory in winter. It boasts snow-covered mountains, tramway rides, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and dog sled rides. When you’re done playing in the snow, enjoy dinner at a café with stunning mountain views, then cozy up in a rustic chalet with your kids, a pile of warm blankets, and a steaming cup of hot chocolate.

Bon Appétit The food in France is divine and plentiful.

Start with a breakfast of warm, buttery croissants and pain au chocolat (chocolate croissants) from a local boulangerie. Street foods like crêpes with Nutella are convenient on the go. A picnic lunch assembled from a local market — a fresh baguette, perfectly ripened cheese, sausage, pâté, sweet strawberries, éclairs and mille-feuilles (a.k.a. Napoleons) — is the ultimate French experience, especially when topped with a bottle of local wine. Most bistros open for dinner later than your family’s usual mealtime, and dining is often a long, drawn-out affair. Cafés are more casual and flexible and serve kid-pleasers like croques monsieur (essentially grilled ham-andcheese) and omelets. If you want to eat earlier, say 6pm, look for a café with continuous service.

Perfect Accommodations If you’re staying in one area for a week, rent an apartment through Airbnb.

com or VRBO.com. For an authentic, locally guided experience, book a chambre d’hôte or gîte (www.chambres-hotes.fr or en.gites-defrance.com). American hotel chains can be expensive and removed from the culture; European hotels are more authentic. Rooms are typically smaller and more streamlined, but Booking.com can locate properties with a family room, which often includes bunk beds.

Getting Around Riding the rails is the most romantic way to travel through Europe.

With high-speed trains like the TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse), you can go from one city to another in a flash. But be prepared to lug suitcases through narrow aisles and multi-level train stations. Renting a car (try www.carrentals.com) allows you to travel at your own pace and venture off the beaten path. The highways, called autoroutes, are easy to navigate, safe, and clean. You’ll need extra money for tolls and gas, and a GPS is worth the expense. In Paris, forget the car and use the easy-to-navigate Métro system instead.

Tips

Be friendly.

Comfort goes a long way.

Prepare to picnic.

Easy does it.

The French, rude? Not necessarily. Manners are essential to the French, and they rarely skip a “merci” or “au revoir.” They also appreciate travelers’ efforts to speak their language. A simple “Bonjour, madame” or “Bonjour, monsieur” when you walk into a café or shop goes a long way. Save money by shopping at street markets and eating in your apartment or outdoors. Stowing utensils, napkins, and a corkscrew in your bag makes impromptu picnics easier.

Don’t limit your ability to walk, wander, and discover. Get everyone a pair of high-quality walking shoes. Try the new line of stylish-yet-supportive ballet flats recently introduced by Dr. Andrew Weil Integrative Footwear (www.weilbeing.com). The famous sights are important — who wants to travel all the way to Paris and not see the Eiffel Tower? — but journeying as a family can be tiring, so schedule plenty of downtime.

Nurturing You by Heather Porter

Self-Care to Improve Self-Esteem Motherhood, at any time, takes a toll on your body. With four children of my own, I often find myself speaking to other women about their concerns. They are generally focused on the state of their bellies and bottoms, as well as how tired they feel. A broken night’s sleep is draining, and as you get older, your energy levels may lower. A woman’s metabolism starts to slow down in her late 30s. Plus, you’re busy looking after everyone in your family — perhaps at the expense of yourself. The good news is there are many ways to keep our energy and sparkle up — albeit with effort! Find your balance and old sense of self again by understanding the changes that have taken place in your body and mind since entering motherhood. Small steps will eventually change the bigger picture so that you can be happier and healthier. Exercise, nutrition, and physical well-being are important for you and your family. Involve the children in your goals and activities, and they will learn from your good habits. There is always time to exercise even if it means doubling up. Take the “stroll” out of the stroller and march forth; pick up the wrists and heels to turn a general errand into a walk and raise the pulse. Bend down and collect leftover clothes with an actual squat, use the buttocks to push yourself up. Squat while you clean your teeth, and you will clock as many as 30 squats a day. Muscles want to be exercised and properly used. They also need hydrating, so drink more water! Our muscles get affected by toxins just like other parts of the body. The more water we drink, the more we can flush the toxins. Of course, it helps to not take in as much toxins in the first place! Less alcohol and less caffeine may

sound less fun, but it is far healthier for you to reduce intake of both. A high-quality coffee that has been decaffeinated (it should say on the packet) tastes just as good as a caffeinated coffee. There are clever ways you can cut down on consumption without activating cravings. A nutritious eating plan and aerobic exercise will aid with toning and weight loss for your physical well-being. To target the belly, keep a positive connection to it, and do specific exercises such as situps and leg lifts (lie flat and slowly raise straight legs). The loose, “empty skin” (folds without fat that you can pinch) may never vanish, but it will reduce as the skin around it tightens up and draws in. By burning fat, you will regain more shape at the waist. Also try twisting exercises such as hula hooping as a fun activity to do with the children. Women can at times be susceptible to depression, and it is important to keep your brain exercised. Memory games with the children actually help us, too. My youngest son likes the shopping game: “I went to the store and bought an apple; I went to the store and bought an apple and a banana...” Simply go through the alphabet and repeat each item. This can be done with names, countries, etc., and can lighten up a tedious car journey. Crosswords and reading well-written books keep the mind open. I enjoy historical novels; absorb the facts while the fiction weaves a story thread around them to keep the reader hooked. Don’t stress about forgetting the odd little thing, our responsibilities and priorities totally shifted when we ventured into motherhood. Our brains had to open up a whole new division. Because remembering to feed the kids has come to the forefront, it’s okay to occasionally forget where you put the recipe for pecan pie! It always helps to take a deep breath and go back to where you were when you thought of it last.

As a mother of four and the author of Body Back (Clementine Publishing), Heather Porter shares her hands-on and often humorous experiences of getting your old self back. She provides well-researched, yet accessible guidance on exercise, nutrition, beauty, and emotional and physical health. Classic Thanksgiving Fun

Your kids will love the classic activity of creating a one-of-a-kind paper turkey by tracing their hands! Try out the Hands and Feet Turkey Craft, courtesy of www.kaboose.com, for a truly fun time that also adds tracing feet to this classic kids activity! What You’ll Need: •Construction paper in brown, tan, orange, yellow, and white •Scissors •Glue •Wiggle eyes if you want a turkey that’s a little silly! What To Do: Trace your two feet (with shoes on) on the brown construction paper, then trace two hands on each color of construction paper. Then, cut out all the hands and feet tracings. Put the two foot tracings together with the heels one on top of another. Make it so the wider part of the feet are touching but also far apart enough to make the turkey body and head. Apply glue. Cut two turkey legs out of the orange scraps, then cut a diamond shape for the beak. Draw the eyes on white paper and cut them out, or use wiggle eyes. Make the wattle out of red construction paper. Glue each piece onto the body. Then, glue the red, orange, and yellow construction paper hands behind the brown body to make the tail. Finally, position the two tan hands on either side of the body to make the turkey’s wings and glue them in place, and you’ve got a cute turkey buddy for the holidays!
