Louisiana voters head to the polls once again on November 16th to settle run-off races left unresolved by the October 12th primary election. In statewide elections, Gov. John Bel Edwards is fighting for a second term in a run-off against Republican businessman Eddie Rispone. Should Edwards hold on to the seat, he will be the only Democratic Governor in the deep south. The only other statewide election is for Secretary of State, where Interim Secretary, Kyle Ardoin (R) faces off

Through 311 Lafayette, citizens can submit service requests online and find related information in one, easy-to-access location. This website currently allows users to report specific non-emergency police-related requests, such as suspected illegal activities, loitering, panhandling, illegal parking, and other areas of concern in the community

PARISH PROUD Launched in Lafayette Parish
CDC Shows Louisiana With Highest Number of Reported Flu Cases
By Scott Brazda
“This is not about us,” said Skyra Rideaux. “It’s about amplifying and elevating those organizations who are already making a difference.” On the afternoon of October 14th, the Keep Lafayette Beautiful director was beaming in UL’s Lite Center Wednesday afternoon as she and local business icon Matt Stuller unveiled what they hope will prove to be an instrument of change in the place we call home. On its surface, Parish Proud is a new beautification initiative that will figuratively and (hopefully) literally change the visual landscape of, not only Lafayette, but also the municipalities of Broussard, Carencro, Duson, Scott and Youngsville. But in addition to being an ‘initiative’, Parish Proud will also serve as an organization that supports the area’s many amazing partners that— day-in, day-out – are out there making Lafayette Parish’s aesthetic appeal match the intrinsic beauty of its people. Stuller- who not only talks the antilitter talk, but also walks the walk and picks up trash along the streets that border his Stuller, Inc. facility - said Parish Proud will focus on seven primary sources of litter: (1) Fast food packing; (2) Garbage trucks; (3) Opencontainers (beverage cups and cans that end up on streets and in yards); (4) Cigarette butts; (5) Trash that flies from the backs of pickup trucks; (6) Illegal signs; and (7) Illegal dumping. “We are
doing some great work in these areas, but we still must do so much more,” said Stuller. Other speakers during the 90-minute unveil included Lafayette MayorPresident Joel Robideaux, McCombVeazey Neighborhood Director Tina Shelvin Bingham and city-and-parish law enforcement leaders, Police Chief Toby Aguillard and Sheriff Mark Garber. Attendees included business and civic leaders from throughout Lafayette Parish, plus representatives from some of the 14 elementary, middle and high schools who showed their support for Parish Proud. Parish Proud has a number of ways businesses, nonprofits and residents can further the mission, and its website (www.parishproud.org) provides the perfect entry point for those who want to become partners. “Awareness and education will be key,” added Stuller, “and each and every one of us can make a difference.”
According to the latest report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Louisiana tops the chart with the highest level of reported Influenza (Flu) cases in the continental U.S. In Lafayette Parish, Carencro Heights Elementary School was closed on November 8, 2019, due to the large number of confirmed influenza virus cases. It is recommended that anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms see their physician as early as possible for treatment.
What is Influenza (Flu)?
Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.
Flu Symptoms
Influenza (flu) can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Flu is different from a cold. Flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have flu often feel
some or all of these symptoms: • fever* or feeling feverish/chills • cough • sore throat • runny or stuffy nose • muscle or body aches • headaches • fatigue (tiredness) some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults. *It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.
How Flu Spreads Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by tiny droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose or possibly their eyes.

10 Former Ragin’ Cajuns Inducted Into Louisiana Athletics Hall of Fame As part of its Homecoming celebration, 10 former Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns were inducted into the Louisiana Athletics Hall of Fame. The 2019 class includes eight former student-athletes and two coaches. Inductees include former studentathletes Jose Alvarez (baseball), Stephanie DeFeo (softball), Priscilla Lima (volleyball), Kathy Morton (softball) and Ivan “Ike” Taylor (football). The men’s tennis doubles team of Bret Garnett and Ashley Rhoney will also enter the Hall of Fame. Also among the inductees are the first father and daughter ever inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame, Leigh Hennessy Robson (trampoline), and her father, the late Jeff Hennessy, a trampoline coach (lifetime achievement). The late track and field coach Charles Lancon will also be inducted. Alvarez led the Ragin’ Cajuns in wins and strikeouts during his two seasons with the team in 1977 and 1978. He became the first Ragin’ Cajuns pitcher since Ron Guidry to throw a nineinning, no-hitter when he struck out 10 batters during an 11-0 win over UT Arlington on April 30, 1978. Alvarez was the Southland Conference’s Pitcher of the Year in 1978. He would ultimately
earn a spot on the conference’s AllDecade Team for the 1970s. Alvarez played in the Major Leagues for several seasons after being drafted in the eighth round of the 1978 MLB Draft by the Atlanta Braves. DeFeo, a member of the Ragin’ Cajuns softball team from 1994-97, was a threetime All-American who played first base and was a designated player. As a freshman, her batting average was .435, and her slugging percentage was .739, a school record. She finished her career as the school record holder in home runs (43), runs batted in (187), walks (94) and slugging percentage (.676). DeFeo is currently head coach at Mercer University. Garnett and Rhoney are the only All-Americans in the history of Ragin’ Cajuns men’s tennis. They played both singles and doubles. In doubles, the pair was ranked No. 1 in the nation in 1987 and No. 2 in 1988. They were members of the Ragin’ Cajuns tennis team that earned a year-end No. 18 ranking in 1988. Garnett was 65-39 in singles; Rhoney was 71-48 in singles. While playing professionally as a doubles team, Garnett and Rhoney reached the quarterfinals of the French Open. They reached the Round of 16 at three other Grand Slam events – the US Open, the
Australian Open and Wimbledon. Jeff Hennessy, an associate professor of physical education at the University from 1959 to 1986, was director of the University’s gymnastics and trampoline programs. He was coach of the United States trampolining team from 1964 to 1980. As coach of the U.S. team, he led his squad to nine world titles. Hennessy also coached more trampoline and double mini-trampoline world and national champions than any other person. The athletes he coached were awarded 26 world championships, and numerous national and regional titles. Leigh Hennessy was a five-time National AAU All-American from 1976-80 during her career at the University. She then became a 10-time U.S. champion and two-time world champion. She was inducted into the World Acrobatics Society Hall of Fame in 2005, and the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2007. She went on to become a prolific Hollywood stunt person, appearing in over 100 movies and TV series. Lancon, a 1959 graduate who coached at Louisiana from 1990-2002, inherited a track and field program that had not claimed a conference title since 1970, and quickly created a powerhouse. Under his guidance, the Ragin’ Cajuns
claimed 17 conference titles, including three during his second season. He led Louisiana to a “Quadruple Crown” in 1993 as coach for the men’s and women’s teams. Each claimed the Sun Belt Conference outdoor and indoor titles. Lancon was a Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year 14 times. Lima, who played for Louisiana from 1999 to 2002, ranks among the volleyball program’s top five in singleseason kills (381), attack attempts (1,006), and points (448.5). She was a two-time all-conference selection. She finished her career with 1,228 kills – a number that still ranks in the top five in school history. Lima has played professionally for several tours, earning numerous top five finishes, and for the Brazilian National Beach Team. In 2009, she was named the Most Improved Player on the Association of Volleyball Professionals tour. Morton was a two-time, first-team All-American, in 1994 and 1995. She hit .360 or higher in each of her final three seasons, capped off by back-toback .400 campaigns her final two years. Morton finished her career as the school record-holder in 12 different categories, including base hits (281), doubles (61), home runs (29) and RBI’s (176). She was selected to the NFCA All-Region and the All-Louisiana teams each of the four seasons she played at Louisiana from 1992 to 1995. Morton was named to the All-Tournament team at the 1993 Women’s College World Series. Taylor, who began his career as a Ragin’ Cajun at running back, switched to defensive back for his senior year. He recorded 46 tackles, forced two fumbles and broke up eight passes. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Taylor in the fourth round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He helped lead the Steelers to two Super Bowl wins, in Super Bowl XL and Super Bowl XLIII. During his NFL career, Taylor played in 175 games and recorded 636 tackles with 14 interceptions. The University’s Hall of Fame recognizes men and women who distinguished themselves as studentathletes, coaches, administrators, and alumni whose collegiate careers were shortened by the chance to pursue professional sports and/or made significant contributions to their professions and their communities.

2019 PROJECT FRONT YARD AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED
4975 NW Evangeline Thruway | Carencro, LA
[7 miles from Lafayette off I-49 at exit 7 between Carencro and Sunset] www.barewoodfurniturecenter.com | 337-896-5203 Since Project Front Yard’s (PFY) inception in 2014, the community-wide beautification initiative has worked to highlight those who work diligently to improve the community. As a part of their ongoing commitment to PFY’s mission, IBERIABANK partnered once again to celebrate honorees at the event. The awards are given annually to recognize individuals and organizations in Lafayette who are working to create a cleaner, greener and environmentally conscious community. During this year’s ceremony, awards were given to honor individuals and organizations that exemplify the mission of Project Front Yard: • Best in Restoration was presented to Christie Snow, an individual whose ability to show compassion for the environment led her to organize “Pick It Up Acadiana”. Snow’s mission was to help any individual or group who wanted to make a change in their community, but lacked the resources, education, or ideas to begin. Snow’s initiative is not aimed at just one park, but all public and private areas that need upkeep to stay beautiful for others in the future. * Best in Preservation was presented to Alzina Dural, Founder of Seasons’ the Green Leaf, who began her first project by implementing and developing consistent Neighborhood Watch programs in Quiet Town (QT). Seasons’ the Green Leaf provides a food pantry and books and materials throughout the Lafayette community for anyone having
a need. In addition, Seasons’ has been in the forefront of successfully securing Project Front Yard within the “QT” community through partnering with Sheriff Mark Garber and his inmate worker crew to maintain grass and litter pick-ups throughout “QT.” • Best in Advocacy was presented to Denise Lanclos who has just about a full-time job working on Azalea Trail’s social media, grant applications, coordinating projects and remapping its trail to promote ecotourism. Lanclos has expanded the original urban core concentration of effort on the original trail and envisions greater community landscapes to include a plan for “Grand Boulevards” of trees and azaleas. * Best Overall Project Front Yard Effort was presented to Moncus Park. Moncus Park was selected as a recipient for this year’s Apache Tree Grant Program and from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services to re-establish one of the largest stands of Cajun coastal prairie that will exist. In addition to the over 100-year-old oak trees, they planted 60 new live oaks that will line a ¾ mile promenade in the park. • The Mayor’s Citizen Action Award, a new category this year, was presented to Ross Cottrill for his consistent participation in PFY’s events including Embrace A Space and Household Hazardous Waste Day. Cottrill earned 25,000 points and ranked number one on the leaderboard of the Gnome Nation app.

Louisiana Prisons Struggle to Track Inmate Release Dates, Legislative Auditor Says By David Jacobs | The Center Square
The agency that runs Louisiana’s state prisons isn’t doing enough to track inmate release dates and parole eligibility, a Louisiana Legislative Auditor report says. Department of Public Safety and Corrections officials say a new policy ensures supervisors review some time calculations but the department doesn’t have the resources to review every inmate’s situation. The auditor found 5 of 40 computations tested had inaccurate information, based on the supporting documentation, resulting in inaccurate release dates or parole eligibility classifications. In addition, 21 of 40 computations tested did not have reviewer initials or other support to indicate the sentence computation was reviewed by someone other than the preparer. “Calculating offender release dates is a complicated process,” DOC Secretary Jimmy LeBlanc said in his written response to the audit. “Each legislation session that results in a change to laws that impact time computation requires the Department to develop a method to implement the change and clarify the impacts of the change to existing laws and adjust training accordingly.” In cases when changes to the law are forward-looking only, staff continues to have cases that must be tracked while following the old laws, he added. Last year, the corrections department implemented a new procedure in which supervisors review 25 time computation cases per month, LeBlanc said, but resources are not available to have supervisors review every case. The auditor’s office says the department also “does not have adequate controls in place” for the pharmacy inventory at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center and the automotive fuel inventory at three other
facilities. Department officials say they will stop accepting unused medications donated by nursing homes, though the practice “saves tax payers thousands of dollars each year,” because the volume
of donations is too difficult to track without additional staff. Officials also plan to implement a new fuel card system. The auditor’s office says department spending remained relatively
steady over the past five fiscal years. Lawmakers cut state funding in fiscal year 2016 but increased it over the next two years.
