Project location it is inside the Syracuse harbor, in a touristic destination area. Keller Foundation S.p.a. was awarded for the realization of necessary works to ensure see bed stabilization with stony material through columns with vibro-floatation technic. For the realization of the mooring dock for cruise liner next to the Saint Antonio wharf, were used anti-flex containers cells under see level. To create these special containers, particular attention was made on joint formation between containers and existing dock. In order to increase resistance, improve dynamic behavior under seismic action ( in terms of liquefaction potential) and to increase rigidity to minimize absolute and differential sinking, was performed in the filling area a vibro-floatation treatment with the purpose to increase see bed relative density. From the practical point of view, Syracuse vibro-floatation technic utilized on job site, consisted in the insertion of two-pointed vibrating probes , mounted on a cable excavator, until maximum project height. Once the vibrating probes reaches project height they start to vibrate on the horizontal plane through the rotation of an eccentric mass. Vibrating probes are then slowly extracted carrying out in the same time filling procedure with stony material to compensate volume reduction caused by see bed thickening. Leica Geosystems challenge was to create a solution for Keller Foundation S.p.a. with GPS technology that guides the operator during vibrating probes insertion on project points, with 15 cm tolerances. Also they wanted to create a workflow report where the gap from project point and realized point position is recorded so project design correction can be done during work process.
