A NOTE FROM THE CURATOR To mark the occasion of The Rite of Spring / common ground[s] at Park Avenue Armory, Making Space at the Armory public programming series is honored to convene our second dance salon. Celebrating the transformative choreography of Pina Bausch, presented in tandem with a new duet by Germaine Acogny and Malou Airaudo, this afternoon conversation draws connections across continents, cultures, and generations of dance. It also offers a rare window into a unique collaboration among the Pina Bausch Foundation, Sadler’s Wells, and the

École des Sables. We are pleased to welcome back scholar and choreographer Thomas F. DeFrantz to moderate this salon, and to invite the voices and visions of the dance artists who are upholding the Bausch legacy and charting futures for contemporary dance in Africa. — Tavia Nyong’o, Curator of Public Programming at Park Avenue Armory

PEAT ON STAGE AND IN THE WORLD The dancers in The Rite of Spring are performing on a stage covered in peat, a spongy type of soil made from decaying leaves, stems, roots and mosses. As these materials decompose, they release nutrients that facilitate new plant growth. The performers are, quite literally, dancing on life and death, feeling, hearing, and smelling the Earth as it interacts with their movements. In its own ways, peat disrupts our understanding of the finality of death. Park Avenue Armory Curator of Public Programming, Tavia Nyong’o has invited the artist-scientist team Makalé Faber Cullen and Peter M. Groffman to bring audiences on a brief journey exploring the ecological and cultural significance of peat, specifically the world’s largest tropical peatlands in the Congo Basin. Spanning six African nations and part of a critically biodiverse ecosystem that has been sustainably stewarded by over 75 million people for generations, the Congo Basin Peatlands are also now on the frontlines of our collective efforts to mitigate the climate crisis.
