“The exhibition is conceived as a scripted space, like an automaton, producing different temporalities, and rhythms. The visitor is guided through the spaces... a mental choreography.”– Philippe Parreno Philippe Parreno places the construction of the exhibition at the heart of his process and approaches it through different formats on each occasion. A veritable open space, the exhibition is a format, a frame for things to appear and disappear. The artist seeks to transform the exhibition visit into a singular experience that plays with spatial and temporal boundaries: “You always have to establish a relation between the production of form and the exhibition of form. For me, they are both totally dependent on each other. There is no object of art without its exhibition.”

In the exhibition, Parreno also presents five films:

Time is especially important to Parreno and the exhibition at the Armory is a precisely choreographed sequence of events. Often described as “immersive,” Parreno’s exhibitions introduce each precise element (a light sculpture, a film, a piece of music) to enforce the durational aspect of the exhibition to the visitor, ultimately bringing each individual element into relation with another. If the solo exhibition for Parreno is a form of soliloquy, the artist is “creating polyphony where there is a monograph.” He is asking the visitor to see “what is singular in that which is plural and seeing that which is plural in a singular work.” The exhibition is conceived to host a mass audience and yet addresses them as individuals.

Invisibleboy (2010), a portrait of an illegal Chinese immigrant boy and his mother living in Chinatown, through the child’s paranoia;

The Armory’s vast Wade Thompson Drill Hall is animated by a series of 26 marquee sculptures by Parreno that form an allée of light and sound, an ensemble entitled Danny The Street, which constitutes as the artist suggests a Gamelan (a series of instruments brought together to form one larger instrument). Parreno’s connection to the Gamelan stems from American anthropologist Margaret Mead who, in Art and Reality, writes about integrated wholes, rituals which appeal to all of the senses rather than segregate the visual sense from the other senses. Parreno has also placed microphones outside the Armory that live broadcast the soundscape of New York City inside the building. At moments, the city takes control of the entire exhibition, animating marquees, flying screens, and playing the disklavier pianos.

The Crowd (2015), a new film which holds a mirror to the Armory’s drill hall, where events outside the control (and beyond the comprehension) of its inhabitants transform their individual and collective psyches; Marilyn (2012), a phantasmagoric séance of the deceased starlet in a suite she once occupied at the Waldorf Astoria in New York;

June 8, 1968 (2009), a re-enactment of the train voyage that transported assassinated former Senator for New York and presidential candidate Robert Kennedy’s body from New York to Washington D.C.; Anywhere Out in the World (2000), in which the Manga character Annlee describes her origin, transformation and life as a “product,” as an “image,” as “no ghost just a shell.” Collaboration has always been an important element of Parreno’s practice. This exhibition features performances by the worldrenowned pianist Mikhail Rudy of works by Ligeti, Feldman, Ravel, and Scriabin, among others, and a soundscape designed by Nicolas Becker (and including new compositions by Ranjana Leyendecker, Mirwais, DJ Agoria, Benoit Delbecq, and Robert AA Lowe) that respond to Parreno’s work and the Armory’s expansive 55,000-square-foot space. Choreographed together by Parreno, these musical works form an all-encompassing and continuously evolving artistic composition of operatic proportions. With artist Tino Sehgal, the Armory exhibition has brought a Japanese Manga character to life in the form of Ann Lee, an ongoing project that Parreno initiated in 2000 in which a fictional computer-generated girl is reimagined and reanimated by different artists. In its entirety, the exhibition H {N)Y P N(Y} OSIS (pronounced hypnosis) takes the form of a landscape of films, objects, and empty spaces where events unfold. Parreno has transformed the Park Avenue Armory with this concatenation of impressions, images, and sensations into a performative space, a staged site in space-time where different sequences guide the visitor from one event to another. His intention is not only to give a rhythm to the visit, but to the life of the entire space by way of a temporal mechanism that transforms the whole building into an automaton. As such, the artist—who performs the roles of actor, director, and choreographer—redefines the exhibition experience.

Danny The Street, 2015 Parreno brings together 26 marquees in a single installation, eight of which are being made especially for this exhibition. A central and defining element of H {N)Y P N(Y} OSIS, the marquees come together as an ensemble piece of visual objects and sound producing instruments in their own right, arranged in order to form an avenue of light responding to the soundscape and other works on view. Anywhere Out of the World, 2000 Annlee is a manga character whose rights were bought from a Japanese agency in 1999. Following the purchase, Parreno devised a project – No Ghost Just a Shell – and invited artists to use her image as they wished. For a period of time, Annlee became the sign of a collectivity.

D

June 8, 1968, 2009 A re-enactment of the train voyage famously recorded by photographer Paul Fusco that transported assassinated senator and presidential candidate Robert Kennedy’s body from New York to Washington D.C.

E

The Crowd, 2015 Filmed within the Wade Thompson Drill Hall of the Park Avenue Armory, the work presents a collective experience of multiple realities in which events outside the control (and beyond the comprehension) of its inhabitants transform their individual and collective psyches – what you look at looks at you.

F

Invisibleboy, 2010 The portrait of an illegal Chinese immigrant boy and his mother living in Chinatown in New York, this work also shows the spectral monsters that inhabit the child’s imagination that are literally scratched onto the film stock. In this filmic portrait, fantasy and social realism, fiction and documentary, all overlap.

G

Bleachers, 2015 Inspired by Jacques Polieri (1928-2011), the creator of modern scenography who questioned the relationship between spectator and place, Parreno’s Bleachers is a circular, rotating viewing platform synchronized with the sequence of films and the choreography of the exhibition.

Ann Lee, 2011 Annlee is embodied by real young women who interact with the exhibition and with the viewer through social encounters, as originally created by Tino Sehgal and produced by Asad Raza.

C

Marilyn, 2012 Marilyn conjures up Marilyn Monroe through a phantasmagorical séance in a suite at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York, where she lived in the 1950s. Phantasmagoria was an early form of cinema, a kind of circus act where conjurers would use lighting and artificial smoke to summon an ethereal apparition in an attempt to bring back the dead. Here, the image is taken from the point of view of the deceased Marilyn. The film reproduces Marilyn Monroe’s presence by means of three algorithms: the camera becomes her eyes, a computer reconstructs the prosody of her voice, and a robot recreates her handwriting.

Pianos provided by Steinway & Sons and Faust Harrison Pianos.

ANN LEE, 2011 With Ella Chidsey, Sydney Chan, Olivia Fanders, Zoe Karp, Courtney Lucius, Melo Ludwig, Macy McGrail, Alana Moy, Kaylee Moy, Elizabeth Oakes, Amber Relacion, Bryn Singer, Sophia Valinotti Collection of Philippe Parreno

ABOUT PHILIPPE PARRENO Philippe Parreno is a visual artist whose work spans a diversity of media, including film, sculpture, performance, drawing, and text. Based in Paris, France, Parreno has collaborated with a wide spectrum of artists and curators throughout his career and has exhibited internationally. In presenting his work, Parreno approaches the exhibition as a medium unto itself, and explores its possibilities as a coherent “object” rather than as a collection of individual works. To this end, he conceives his shows as a scripted space where a series of events unfold. Parreno used this format for Anywhere, Anywhere Out of the World (2013), where he transformed the Palais de Tokyo in Paris using objects, music, lights, and films to guide the visitor’s experience, and at the Barbican, London, in The Bride and The Bachelors (2013), where his orchestration of live and pre-recorded sound activated the artworks of Cage, Cunningham, Johns, Rauschenberg, and Duchamp in concert with live dance performances. Collaboration is integral to Parreno’s work. In 2006, Parreno co-directed with artist Douglas Gordon the documentary Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, which follows the legendary French midfielder throughout an entire Real Madrid vs Villarreal match using 17 cameras. In 2012, Parreno collaborated with artist Liam Gillick on To the Moon via the Beach, which filled the Amphitheatre in Arles with sand. Over four days, the “beach” was transformed by sand sculptors into a moonscape, which formed a constantly changing backdrop to a series of artists’ projects. Most recently, Parreno was involved in a unique collaboration with a range of artists and curators—including Tino Sehgal, Liam Gillick, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Asad Raza, and Pierre Boulez—for the exhibition Solaris Chronicles at LUMA Arles. Parreno’s work is represented in the collections of Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Kanazawa Museum of the 21st Century, Japan; MoMA New York; Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Tate Modern, London; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. His work has also appeared in the Venice Biennale (1993, 1995, 2003, 2007, and 2009), Lyon Biennale (1997, 2003, and 2005), and Istanbul Biennial (2001). Parreno studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Grenoble (1983–1988) and at the Institut des Hautes Etudes en arts plastiques at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris (1988–1989). Parreno would especially like to personally thank Maja Hoffmann and LUMA Foundation for their support and collaboration in realizing this exhibition. The artist also thanks Marie Auvity and his studio.

ABOUT THE COLLABORATORS Nicolas Becker is one of the most famous composers and Foley artists in cinema worldwide. His encounter with Steve Arguelles and Benoit Delbecq, as well as his ongoing collaboration with Philippe Parreno for several years, have been critical points in his career, helping foster his language/work. From these different encounters and collaborations, he has developed a vocabulary that transforms each of his artistic propositions into a unique field of experimentation. He approaches each project as a prototype, proposing an original thinking and creative approach tailored to each collaboration (be it with musicians, filmmakers, or theater directors). Becker also collects sounds, both natural and musical, that constantly feed into his work. His sonic compositions are based on acoustic recordings that are veritable sound installations. Following a personal and cognitive approach, he also develops numerous microphone recording prototypes that breathe new life into our sonic world. Randall Peacock received a BA in Fine Arts from School of Visual Arts and an MFA in Sculpture from Yale University. He has built a career working with many talents including photographers, film directors, cinematographers, stylists, and creative directors. In addition, Peacock has designed sets for magazines such as Italian and French Vogue and Interview Magazine. Most recently, he has begun collaborating on exciting new projects around the world, designing fashion shows, furniture, and art installations. In 2012 he started to collaborate with Philippe Parreno as a set designer for the short film, Marilyn, which premiered at Art Basel 2012. Mikhail Rudy has led a distinguished international music career over forty years. Born in Russia, he studied at the Tchaïkowsky Conservatory in Moscow. After winning the Marguerite Long Competition in Paris, he asked for political asylum in France. Rudy made his Western debut playing Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with Msistlav Rostropovich and Isaac Stern in a concert celebrating Marc Chagall’s 90th birthday and his American debut in Cleveland with Lorin Maazel. Concerts followed with orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the symphonic orchestras of Boston, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco, and in Europe the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony, and the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Rudy has made over 30 recordings for EMI including the highly acclaimed complete Rachmaninov and Tchaïkowsky concerti with the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic and Mariss Jansons. His great artistic curiosity has led him to initiate several innovative projects. He conceived and directed a film based on Kandinsky’s staged version of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, which he has played live throughout the world, including the Guggenheim museums of New York and Bilbao. He has collaborated with artists from different disciplines including cult directors the Quay Brothers. Rudy has played live at the Museum of Modern Art in New York for their Kafka-Janacek project. His latest live recording, When Time Splits with techno legend Jeff Mills, has just been released. In 2013 Philippe Parreno invited Rudy to participate in his exhibition in Palais de Tokyo in Paris, which is followed by their collaboration at the Armory. Tino Sehgal won the Golden Lion for best artist at the 2013 Venice Biennale. He was awarded, according to the official press release, for “the excellence and innovation that his practice has brought opening the field of artistic disciplines.” Trained in Political Economy and Dance, he has developed a body of work without physical form and based on human encounters and exchange. This body of work consists of performances in which different groups of “interpreters” interact with visitors according to very elaborate directions. His practice is “an art of human interaction, situation, and confrontation,” affirms Adrian Searle. Indeed, Tino Sehgal has developed a body of work in which the audience becomes co-creators. His most recent works have been presented in the most important museums worldwide, such as in the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal, as well as in major contemporary art events such as Documenta in Kassel and the Venice Biennale.

ABOUT THE ARMORY Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory is dedicated to supporting unconventional works in the visual and performing arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization, enabling artists to create and audiences to consume epic and adventurous presentations that can not be mounted elsewhere in New York City. In its first eight years, the Armory opened its doors to visionary artists, directors, and impresarios who provided extraordinary experiences in a range of art forms. Such was its impact that in December 2011, The New York Times noted, “Park Avenue Armory … has arrived as the most important new cultural institution in New York City.” Built between 1877 and 1881, Park Avenue Armory has been hailed as containing “the single most important collection of nineteenth century interiors to survive intact in one building” by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall, with an 80-foot-high barrel vaulted roof, is one of the largest unobstructed spaces in New York City. The Armory’s magnificent reception rooms were designed by leaders of the American Aesthetic Movement, among them Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, Candace Wheeler, and Herter Brothers. The building is currently undergoing a $200-million renovation designed by Herzog & de Meuron.
