2015 REVIEW

Dear Friends of the Armory, 2015 has been another exceptional year for Park Avenue Armory and our artistic offerings, arts education outreach, and design and preservation. Our programming in the Wade Thompson Drill Hall saw visionary and influential artists astonish audiences with spectacular productions that could only take place here, selling out every performance while increasing capacity in every case. And our recital series in the intimate setting of the jewel-like Board of Officers Room hosted impressive debuts and artfullycurated programs that continued to be acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.

We also made great strides in securing extraordinary programmatic offerings for seasons to come by securing a brilliant new Artistic Director, Pierre Audi, to lead the artistic programming efforts in the future. And through the continued generosity of The Thompson Family Foundation, the Armory now boasts a $65 million programming and operating endowment that will kick-start our next phase of growth and carry our institution confidently into the future. Our arts education program continued to flourish, introducing over 4,200 underserved students from 50 public schools across the city to our unconventional arts programming. We also saw more student involvement than ever before in the Armory’s operations by establishing a new student Advisory Board program, providing unprecedented access to world-class artists and the creative process behind their work in our spaces. Made up of Youth Corps members, the Advisory Boards met extensively with artists such as Peter Sellars, Reggie Gray, Laurie Anderson, and Marina Abramović in order to learn first-hand about their projects. They were then able to provide insight into their peers’ potential connections to the material and recommend lines of inquiry, placing them at the forefront of our school outreach. The rehabilitation of our glorious building proceeded apace this year. The restoration of the Veterans Room, one of the most important historic interiors in the country, continued with a public opening slated for early 2016. And the ongoing construction of the North Core will be completed in the Fall of 2016. None of this would have been possible without the generous support of our board of directors and donors.

A special debt of gratitude goes to our wonderfully supportive sponsors: Citi; Pershing Square Capital Management, LP; and Bloomberg Philanthropies. Thank you for your support of all of our endeavors this past year and I look forward to enjoying with you even more adventurous and unprecedented projects in 2016. With best wishes, Rebecca Robertson President & Executive Producer

FLEXN Reggie (Regg Roc) Gray, Peter Sellars march 25-april 4 Characterized by pausing, snapping, gliding, bone breaking, hat tricks, animation, and contortion, flex is a form of street dance that has evolved from the Jamaican bruk-up found in dance halls and reggae clubs in Brooklyn. This electrifying phenomenon was showcased in a new project commissioned and produced by the Armory that confronts issues of social injustice, with the dancers exploring personal narratives through their own unique movement vocabulary in post-modern dance.

— The New York Times

Support for FLEXN has been provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. FLEXN is supported in part by public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. FLEXN was also made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Created in the era of unrest following rulings on Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York City, this powerful new work was staged by visionary director Peter Sellars and flex pioneer Reggie (Regg Roc) Gray in collaboration with a crew of 21 flex dancers from the very neighborhoods where the movement first took shape. Performing both as individuals and in groups to choreography created by the ensemble itself, the dancers utilize their breathtakingly beautiful movement to tell deeply human and sometimes heart-wrenching stories that address these troubling issues of our time.

“Part protest, part dance party, part collective autobiography… FLEXN rails against social injustice, from police brutality to the prison system’s failures in America... By turns tragic and playful, we see the dancers at war, at work, at home; these situations are evoked with a mind-boggling repertoire of quaking, pretzeling, rippling freestyle moves.”

“An ambitious project by the cerebral French artist Philippe Parreno has come to roost at the city’s swankiest uptown kunsthalle.” — Art in America

In his largest installation in the U.S. to date, Parreno continued his interrogations into the radical redefinition of the exhibition ritual at the Armory, in one of the few spaces in the world in which such an epic experience could occur. The monumental interior of the Wade Thompson Drill Hall was animated with 26 marquee sculptures to form an allée of light and sound, five films, and other collaborative works with artists including Tino Sehgal. This dramatic composition also fused the spectral presence of sound—recorded, broadcast live from outside the building, and performed live daily by Mikhail Rudy— to form a landscape of films, objects, and empty spaces where events unfolded. This sensory journey through both remastered existing works and new projects guided the visitor from one event to another, bringing the entire building to life.

“A boisterous love letter to New York”

In the past two decades, Philippe Parreno has almost single-handedly reshaped the very notion of what it means to experience art by turning the dynamics of a show into an evolving, situational process, exploring its possibilities as a singular, coherent object rather than as a collection of individual works.

TREE OF CODES Wayne McGregor, Olafur Eliasson, Jamie xx september 14-21 Visual art, electro-pop, and contemporary dance intersected in an illuminating new work directed by award-winning choreographer Wayne McGregor, artist Olafur Eliasson, and producer/composer Jamie xx. Performed by fifteen soloists and dancers from the Paris Opera Ballet and Company Wayne McGregor, this new type of modern dance layered classical and contemporary styles with visual wizardry and sonic imagination in this highly-anticipated U.S. premiere.

Support for this production has been provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, and by the British Council. This production is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

This new evening-length work commissioned by the Armory took as its starting point Jonathan Safran Foer’s enigmatic publication, at once a novel and a piece of art created by making incisions into the pages of The Street of Crocodiles by Bruno Schulz. Utilizing Foer’s merging of genres and sculptural techniques, the piece featured a site-specific environment that reinvented the performance space with a shape-shifting kaleidoscope of light, color, and reflective mirrors that challenged preconceived notions of the role of the viewer from the moment they entered the drill hall.

“The piece has breathtaking lighting and visual effects… a steely, layered, swelling electronic score… and Mr. McGregor’s choreography, fabulously performed and packed with hyperkinetic intimacy and urgency.” — The New York Times

HABEAS CORPUS Laurie Anderson october 2-4

“Laurie Anderson produced the year’s most unique, moving, and politically charged art event … Demonstrate[ing] the power of technology as a tool for human expression and connectedness, as well as the ability of an ephemeral, performative event to make a powerful impact.” — Artsy, from their “Most Influential Museum Shows of 2015”

Iconic performance artist Laurie Anderson expanded upon her work fusing storytelling and technology, by creating an installation and performance piece that examined lost identity, memory, and the resiliency of the human body and spirit. Commissioned by the Armory, this gripping new artwork interweaved film, sculpture, music, and video to examine the story of Mohammed el Gharani, one of the youngest detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Open to the public during the day, the evocative environment encouraged visitors to use the drill hall as place to meditate on time, identity, surveillance, and freedom, with sounds derived from audio surveillance and nature. The space was also activated by improvised music performances throughout the day and concluded at night in a celebratory concert and dance party with Syrian singer Omar Souleyman, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily, guitarist Stewart Hurwood, and Anderson herself. The installation also included additional film installations including From the Air, which explores the impact of global events on daily life and resonates with many of the themes explored in el Gharani’s story.

GOLDBERG Igor Levit, Marina Abramović december 7-19 Igor Levit, who made his impressive North American recital debut at the Armory in 2014, interpreted Bach’s classic composition in an installation created by seminal artist Marina Abramović. Having redefined what performance art is for nearly 40 years, she re-imagined the concert-going experience by employing her Abramović Method to explore the relationship between performer and observer, the limits of the body, and the possibilities of the mind. Goldberg invited audiences to become a part of the music and experience the work in an entirely new context. They prepared for Levit’s performance by dispossessing themselves of the trappings of everyday society by placing their personal belongings—including cell phones, watches, and other technological devices—inside a private locker. Upon entering the drill hall, the crowd sat in silence for an extended period of time, after which Levit performed all 30 variations to heighten the effect of the piece on their mind and body.

“The effect was stunning… As the audience gazed toward the hall’s vast arched ceiling, Bach was lent some of the childlike wonder of a planetarium star show.” — The New York Times “A visually captivating rethinking of Bach’s Goldberg Variations… In collaboration with a lighting designer, and benefiting immeasurably from a magnificent performance by pianist Igor Levit, Abramović managed to turn an evening of Bach into a genuine event” — The Washington Post Support for this production has been provided by Agnes Gund, the Reed Foundation, and by the Charles H. Revson Foundation. The production is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

RECITAL SERIES Since its reopening in 2013, the Belle Époque splendor of the Board of Officers Room has shown through in magical recitals that invoke the salon culture of the Gilded Age. This season we expanded on the meaning of recital to encompass not only chamber works of classical and contemporary music, but also the art of reciting spoken word, all utilizing the pristine acoustics and sublime scale provided by the elegantly austere space.

FLEXN CONVERSATIONS: RACE AND THE CITY Every performance was preceded by a free public conversation with young people, public figures, educators, and community leaders that addressed some of the most pressing issues explored in FLEXN, including making neighborhoods safe for play, solitary confinement, “broken windows” policies, and reforming the juvenile justice system.

ARTIST TALKS Held in our historic period rooms, these insightful dialogues gave audiences the opportunity to hear directly from the artists about the inspiration and ideas behind their creative process and their work, as well as explore themes related to our productions.

MALKIN LECTURE SERIES

18

This series of lectures features scholars and experts on topics relating to the Park Avenue Armory and its pivotal role in the civic, cultural, and aesthetic evolution of New York City in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In 2015, we looked at the armories of New York City’s past, Gilded Age design, and how New Yorkers at the turn of the century entertained in the holidays.

PRODUCTION-BASED PROGRAMS Elementary, middle, and high school classes were invited to experience the Armory’s 2015 season first hand and at no cost to schools, participating in pre- and post-visit interactive workshops led by members of the Armory Artist Corps, a group comprised of some of New York City’s most soughtafter teaching artists. Students witnessed a wide array of programmatic offerings that took place in the Wade Thompson Drill Hall, including student-only matinees of FLEXN and of Tree of Codes, student-only viewing hours to explore Philippe Parreno’s H {N)Y P N(Y} OSIS and Laurie Anderson’s HABEAS CORPUS, and a student matinee of Goldberg complete with a lesson in the Abramović Method led by Marina Abramović herself. In addition to these large scale works, students were also exposed to intimate engagements with artists in the Armory’s period rooms, attending open rehearsals and participating in Q&A sessions with four of the season’s recitalists, as well as engaging with artists-in-residence 600 Highwaymen and Imani Uzuri.

PARTNER SCHOOLS

22

The Armory’s Partner Schools received in-depth residencies that engaged students with the Armory’s mission and provided a deeper understanding of programmatic offerings. In 2015, classes from partner schools explored the art of installation inspired by Philippe Parreno, wrote and performed a non-linear staged reading about social justice inspired by FLEXN, drew connections between music and visual art inspired by the recitals in the Board of Officers Room, and created three-dimensional, sculptural books of bedtime stories that drew upon the originating materials behind Tree of Codes and Goldberg. Armory partner schools also participated in a masterclass with FLEXN choreographer Reggie “Regg Roc” Gray, attended additional on-site workshops before the Tree of Codes student matinee, and were celebrated at the annual Evening of the Arts. Partner schools in 2015 were Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design in Brooklyn, Bronx Envision Academy in the Bronx, MS 244 The New School for Leadership and the Arts in the Bronx, PS 106 The Parkchester School in the Bronx, and Fresh Creek Elementary School in Brooklyn.

YOUTH CORPS The Youth Corps is a group of students from New York City public high schools who are immersed in the art and creative processes of the Armory’s artists through paid, project-oriented internships that provide job and career training, leadership development, and essential communication and life skills. In 2015, the Youth Corps created term projects inspired by the Armory’s productions. Students developed an immersive installation art experience about the Armory building, past and present, inspired by Philippe Parreno’s H{N}Y P N{Y} OSIS; transformed vintage books into three-dimensional art objects, animated by light and based on classic stories to illustrate the theme of unexpected adaptation central to Tree of Codes; and produced a Guide to Unplugging that was distributed to hundreds of students at the matinee of Goldberg where Youth Corps presented introductory activities with Marina Abramović.

Photo: Da Ping Luo

This year also introduced the Advisory Board program, an applicationbased initiative that brought together high school and college-age Youth Corps students to be the primary research and planning entity for school programs. The Advisory Board provided a youth perspective on the art, and worked with education staff and Armory teaching artists to determine how best to introduce these projects to their peers. Wrestling with topics ranging from racial profiling to constitutional rights, Advisory Board members worked closely with Peter Sellars, Reggie Gray, and Laurie Anderson to not only understand the art that was being produced, but the greater context in which the it was being created. Their thoughtful insights made the Advisory Board vital in the creation and success of the Student Summit on the Arts as Agents of Change, which took place during FLEXN, and in the entire educational program design for HABEAS CORPUS.
