Page 1

A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR The Armory strives to provide its audiences with the opportunity to experience masterful and thought-provoking works that are in dialogue with the sweep of the Armory’s unique spaces. And there is no better setting than the Board of Officers Room, with its pristine acoustics and austere elegance, to offer audiences the chance to enjoy the intimacy of recitals and music-making. Now in its fourth year, the recital series showcases more maverick musicians than ever before with an even greater breadth of works spanning more than six centuries. Building on our commitment to the art form that unites song and poetry, we feature the dynamic soprano Lisette Oropesa for an artfully-curated series of Spanish, German, and French art songs and the expressive countertenor Andreas Scholl, who performs a program of English Renaissance and Baroque gems. We take the art form in exciting new directions with the Grammy Award-winning Roomful of Teeth in a performance exploring vocal music of the 21st century, a recital by the JACK Quartet performing the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Roger Reynold’s FLiGHT, and an interpretation of Nina Simone’s iconic voice through the cello of the intriguing Sonia Wieder-Atherton. We also welcome burnished baritone Roderick Williams as well as Andreas Ottensamer, principal clarinettist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, for their thrilling North American recital debuts. Together with a program of Beethoven’s wondrous violin sonatas by Kristof Baráti, a poignant and heartfelt evening of lieder and art song performed by lyric soprano Kate Royal, and our ongoing partnership with the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program that spotlights the next generation of opera greats, this year’s lineup allows even more opportunities than ever before to witness major talent in the most personal of settings. ABOUT THE PROGRAM “Nemmen con l’ombra d’infedeltà” from Serse by George Frideric Handel (Halle, Saxony, 1685 – London, 1759) Handel wrote Serse (Xerxes), one of the last of his forty or so Italian operas, in 1737-38 on a libretto by Niccolò Minato and Silvio Stampiglia. The title character, the famous King of Persia from the 5th century B.C.E., wants to forsake his betrothed Amastre to marry Romilda; the latter, in love with Xerxes’s brother, rejects the King’s advances and, in this lyrical aria from the opera’s first act, confirms her deep feelings for the man of her heart. Four songs by Robert Schumann (Zwickau, Saxony, 1810 – Endenich, nr. Bonn, 1856) About half of Schumann’s more than 200 songs were written in 1840—the famous Liederjahr (“year of songs”) when Schumann concentrated exclusively on voice and piano. Many of the songs from the Liederjahr were organized into cycles or collections based on works by a single poet. One of the earliest of these was the Liederkreis, op. 24, after poems by Heinrich Heine. The fifth of nine songs in this opus, “Schöne Wiege,” is a resigned and sublimated recounting of a break-up; the past trauma is revisited in the agitated middle section. “Widmung” (“Dedication”), on a poem by Rückert, opens another collection, Myrthen, op. 25. As Graham Johnson, the great Lieder pianist, has written: “It is that rare thing, a piece that combines passion and tenderness, force and sweetness, a thrusting determination with an ability to yield.” (In the middle section of the song, Rückert quotes from himself, repeating the phrase Du bist die Ruh, which we have just heard in Schubert’s setting.) Still in the same year, Schumann wrote twelve songs (Op. 35) after Justinus Kerner, giving 12 originally unrelated poems a certain narrative direction. The sequence of songs suggests a tragic wandering after the end of a love affair, not entirely unlike Schubert’s Winterreise. In “Frage” and “Stille Tränen,” the ninth and tenth songs in the cycle, respectively, even the beauties of nature and a good night’s rest can only provide temporary solace to the protagonist’s sorrow. Three songs by Franz Schubert (Himmelpfortgrund, nr. Vienna [now part of the city], 1797 – Vienna, 1828) Du bist die Ruh (D. 776, 1823), on a poem by Friedrich Rückert, is a special gem among Schubert’s more than 600 songs. In this highly introspective, yet ecstatic paean to

love, highest bliss coexists with a great inner calm. Schubert captured this profound feeling with a sublime melody that climbs to a climactic high note while always maintaining the sense of peace that is the defining moment of the song. In the two “Suleika” songs (D. 720 and 717, 1821), amorous desire and the beauties of nature merge in a single expression of joy. The texts were by Marianne von Willemer, who had collaborated with Johann Wolfgang Goethe on a collection of poems called the West-Eastern Diwan, inspired by classic Persian poetry. In “Suleika I,” youthful excitement gives way to quiet, contemplative happiness when the tempo unexpectedly slows down in the last stanza. “Suleika II,” on the contrary, gets faster and more enraptured at the end, when the heroine speaks of her impending reunion with her lover. Four songs by Gabriel Fauré (Pamiers, Frace, 1845 – Paris, 1924) Fauré wrote about a hundred art songs, or mélodies, during his long career, of which we shall hear four beautiful and universally beloved works. Clair de lune, on the famous poem by Paul Verlaine (Op. 46, No. 2, 1887), is a dream vision where the beloved’s soul becomes a moonlit landscape filled with wonders. The exquisite Au bord de l’eau (Op. 8, No. 1, 1875) is based on a poem by René Sully-Prudhomme, who would go on to win the Nobel Prize in 1901. Nell, after the Parnassian poet Leconte de Lisle (Op. 18, No. 1, 1878), is an ecstatic declaration of love, while Après un rêve (Op. 7, No. 1, 1877) is the sad recollection of a beautiful dream. The poem is the French translation, by Romain Bussine, of an anonymous Italian original. Siete canciones populares españolas (Seven Spanish Folksongs, 1914-15) by Manuel de Falla (Cádiz, Spain, 1876 – Alta Gracia, Argentina, 1946) Manuel de Falla arranged seven folk songs from various regions of the country for voice and piano in what became one of his most popular compositions. The first two songs, “The Moorish Cloth” and “Seguidilla Murciana,” are from the South of Spain, the next two, “Asturiana” and “Jota,” from the North, and the rest from the South again, the last (“Polo”) being a flamenco song. Throughout the cycle, the native Spanish accents mingle with the French impressionist influences that reached de Falla during the seven years he spent in Paris (1907-14). The songs were dedicated to Ida Godebska, the hostess of a famous Parisian salon that Falla frequented during those years. (Maurice Ravel was also one of the regulars there.) —Peter Laki

TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS HANDEL Nemmen con l’ombre d’infedeltà (From Serse) Libretto by Giovanni Bononcini

Not even with the shadows of infidelity Translation by Lisette Oropesa

Aspide sono, a’ detti tuoi d’amore, Nè vuò macchiar d’infedeltà il mio core.

They are asps, your words of love, I do not want to stain my heart with unfidelity.

Not even with the shadows of infidelity, do I wish to betray my heart’s darling. And if my beloved feels anything is wrong, At fault will be love, not jealousy. Not even with the shadows in infidelity, do I wish to betray my heart’s darling.

SCHUMANN Schöne Wiege Beautiful Cradle Text by Heinrich Heine Translation by Lisette Oropesa Schöne Wiege meiner Leiden, Schönes Grabmal meiner Ruh’, Schöne Stadt, wir müssen scheiden,

Beautiful cradle of my suffering, Beautiful gravestone of my peace, Beautiful city, we must part,

Lebe wohl, ruf ich dir zu. Lebe wohl, lebe wohl! Lebe wohl, du heil’ge Schwelle, Wo da wandelt liebchen traut, Lebe wohl, du heil’ge Stelle, Wo ich sie zuerst geschaut! Lebe wohl, lebe wohl!

Farewell, I call out to you. Farewell, farewell! Farewell, you holy threshold, Where my dearest beloved walks, Farewell, you sacred place, Where I first saw her! Farewell, farewell!

Would that I had never seen you, Lovely queen of my heart! Never, never would it have happened, That I suffer so much misery now. I never wanted to bother your heart, I never begged for love; Only to lead a quiet life I wanted to be where you breathed.

But you yourself push me away, Your mouth speaks bitter words; Madness whirls in my senses, And my heart is sick and hurt. And my limbs, weakly and sluggishly, I drag, I drag them along on my walking staff, Until I lay down my tired head Far away in a cool grave.

Schöne Wiege meiner Leiden, Schönes Grabmal meiner Ruh’, Schöne Stadt, wir müssen Scheiden! Lebe wohl, lebe wohl!

Beautiful cradle of my suffering, Beautiful gravestone of my peace, Beautiful city, we must part! Farewell, farewell! Please turn the page quietly.

Widmung Text by Friedrich Rückert

Dedication Translation by Lisette Oropesa

Du meine Seele, du mein Herz, Du meine Wonn’, O du mein Schmerz, Du meine Welt, in der ich lebe, Mein Himmel du, darein ich schwebe, O du mein Grab, in das hinab Ich ewig meinen Kummer gab. Du bist die Ruh, du bist der Frieden, Du bist vom Himmel mir beschieden. Daß du mich liebst, macht mich mir wert, Dein Blick hat mich vor mir verklärt, Du hebst mich liebend über mich, Mein guter Geist, mein beßres Ich!

You my soul, you my heart, You my joy, oh you my suffering, You my world, in which I live, My heaven you, into which I float, Oh you my grave into which I cast down Forever my grief. You are rest, you are peace, You were from the heavens to me granted. That you love me, makes me worthy, Your gaze has made me clear unto myself, You lift me lovingly beyond myself, My good spirit, my better self!

Frage Text by Justinus Kerner

Question Translation by Lisette Oropesa

If you did not exist, holy evening shine! If you did not exist, star-lit night! you flower adornment! you abundant grove! and you, mountains full of earnest splendor! you birdsong from the high heavens! you, song from the full hearts of men, if you did not exist, ah, what could fill, then, in bad times, a heart with joy?

Stille Tränen Text by Justinus Kerner

Silent Tears Translation by Lisette Oropesa

You have from sleep arisen, and wander through the meadow, There lies above all the lands the sky, wondrous blue. All the while you without care slept painlessly, the sky, until morning rained down many tears. In silent nights often Some cry out their pain, and then in the mornings you think, that always happy is his heart!

Suleika I Suleika I Text by Marianne von Willemer Translation by Lisette Oropesa Was bedeutet die Bewegung? Bringt der Ost mir frohe Kunde? Seiner Schwingen frische Regung Kühlt des Herzens tiefe Wunde.

What means this movement? Is the East wind bringing me happy news? Its fresh gusts stirring Cools the deep wounds of the heart.

Carressingly he plays with the dust, He billows in light little clouds, He drives to the secure vine arbor The happy little insects.

He eases the sun’s bright rays, Cools also my flushed cheeks, Kisses the vines also whilst fleeing, those that decorate the fields and hills.

And to me brings his quiet whispers From my friend a thousand greetings; And before this hills darken, He greets me surely with a thousand kisses.

And so you can move on further! Serve your friends and ones who suffer. There where high walls glow, There I will soon find my very beloved.

Ah, the true heart’s knowledge, The breeze of love, new life Is for me only from his own mouth, Can only be given to me by his breath.

Suleika’s Second Song Suleikas zweiter Gesang Translation by Lisette Oropesa Text by Marianne von Willemer Ach, um deine feuchten Schwingen, West, wie sehr ich dich beneide: Denn du kannst ihm Kunde bringen Was ich in der Trennung leide!

Ah, for your misty gusts, West wind, how much I envy you; That you can bring him news of how I suffer in being apart!

Die Bewegung deiner Flügel Weckt im Busen stilles Sehnen; Blumen, Auen, Wald und Hügel Stehn bei deinem Hauch in Tränen.

The movement of your wings wakes in the heart quiet longing; Flowers, meadows, woods, and hills Stand amid your breeze in tears.

But your mild soft breeze cools the wounded eyelids; Ah, I would die of suffering, If I had no hope of ever seeing him again.

Eile denn zu meinem Lieben, Spreche sanft zu seinem Herzen; Doch vermeid’ ihn zu betrüben Und verbirg ihm meine Schmerzen.

Hurry then to my beloved, speak softly to his heart But avoid making him sad And don’t tell him of my suffering.

Tell him but modestly: That his love is my life, Happy feelings from his being closeby Will I have when he is near.

8

To sit together on the bank of the wave that passes, to see it pass; Together, if a cloud glides by in space, To see it glide; On the horizon if a thatched roof smokes, To see it smoke; Surrounding us, if a flower smells sweet, we are perfumed; To hear at the foot of the willow where the water murmers, the murmuring of the water; To not feel, as long as this dream lasts, The passing of time; But the only thing that brings deep passion Is adoring one another, Without any worries of the quarrels of the world, to ignore them; And alone, the two of us before all that tires, without tiring, To feel love, before all that comes to an end, And never ending!

Nell Nell Text by Charles-Marie-René Leconte de Lisle Translation by Lisette Oropesa Ta rose de pourpre à ton clair soleil, Ô Juin, étincelle enivrée, Penche aussi vers moi ta coupe dorée: Mon coeur à ta rose est pareil.

Your purple rose in your sunshine, O June, intoxicating flash, Reach also towards me your golden cup: My heart to your rose is similar.

Under the soft shelter of the dark petals Arises a sigh of pleasure: Many collar doves sing in the remote wood. O my heart, its amorous grief.

How sweet is your pearl in the bright sky Star of the pensive night! But how much more sweet is the lively shimmer that shines in my heart, my heart that is under a spell!

The singing sea, the length of the shore, Will hush its eternal murmur, before in my heart, dearest love, Oh Nell, your image flourishes no longer!

Après un rêve After a dream Italian poem; French version by Romain Bussine Translation by Lisette Oropesa Dans un sommeil que charmait ton image Je rêvais le bonheur, ardent mirage, Tes yeux étaient plus doux, ta voix pure et sonore, Tu rayonnais comme un ciel éclairé par l’aurore;

In a slumber charmed by your image I dreamed of happiness, vivid mirage, Your eyes were more sweet, your voice pure and clear, Your shined like a sky lit up by the dawn;

You called out to me, and I left the earth To run away with you towards the light, The skies for us opened up their clouds Splendors unknown, glimmers of the divine came into view,

Hélas! Hélas! triste réveil des songes Je t’appelle, ô nuit, rends moi tes mensonges, Reviens, reviens radieuse, Reviens ô nuit mystérieuse!

Alas! Alas! Sad memory of dreams I call to you, oh night, give me back your lies, Come back, come back radiant one, Come back, oh mysterious night!

El paño moruno Text by Gregorio Martínez Sierra

The Moorish Cloth Translation by Lisette Oropesa

Seguidilla murciana Text by Anonymous (Folksong)

Murcian Seguidille Translation by Lisette Oropesa

He who has a roof Made of glass Should not throw stones At the neighbor’s. We are muleteers; It could be that on the road We will find each other! For your much inconstancy I compare you To a coin that runs From hand to hand; Which finally is rubbed out And, believing it false, No one takes it!

“Madre...” Dicen que no me quieres, Ya me has querido.

For being traitors, your eyes, I am going to bury them. You don’t know what it costs “of the air,” Girl, to look at them. “Mother, to the shore” Girl, to look at them. “Mother...” They say that you don’t love me, You have already loved me. That which is won was not worth it, “of the air,” For that which was lost, “mother to the shore” For that which was lost. “Mother...”

ABOUT THE ARMORY Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory is dedicated to supporting unconventional works in the visual and performing arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization, enabling artists to create and audiences to consume epic and adventurous presentations that can not be mounted elsewhere in New York City. In its first eight years, the Armory opened its doors to visionary artists, directors, and impresarios who provided extraordinary experiences in a range of art forms. Such was its impact that in December 2011, The New York Times noted, “Park Avenue Armory … has arrived as the most important new cultural institution in New York City.” Built between 1877 and 1881, Park Avenue Armory has been hailed as containing “the single most important collection of nineteenth century interiors to survive intact in one building” by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall, with an 80-foot-high barrel vaulted roof, is one of the largest unobstructed spaces in New York City. The Armory’s magnificent reception rooms were designed by leaders of the American Aesthetic Movement, among them Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, Candace Wheeler, and Herter Brothers. The building is currently undergoing a $210-million renovation designed by Herzog & de Meuron as assisted by Platt Byard Dovell White, as Architects of Record.

NEXT IN THE RECITAL SERIES RODERICK WILLIAMS, baritone JENNY AGUTTER, actor SUSIE ALLAN, piano

KRISTOF BARÁTI, violin KLÁRA WÜRTZ, piano april 27–28

february 4–5

“Baráti’s performance was, in a word, masterful. Probing, austere, meditative, it rang with a rare sense of authenticity and almost majestic scope.” —The Washington Post

“Williams has an enviable reputation, thanks to his handsome vocal quality, open-minded approach to repertoire and warm, unaffected stage persona.” —The Financial Times (London) Baritone Roderick Williams has made a name for himself on both the opera and concert stage, singing a wide repertoire of rarely-heard Baroque gems to contemporary music of today. The burnished baritone makes his North American recital debut with a performance of Schubert’s final and one of the most enduring song collections, elucidating the songs with interspersed poetry and readings for a poignant and heartfelt evening that could only be felt in the perfectly intimate setting of the Board of Officers Room.

LINDEMANN YOUNG ARTIST CONCERTS march 8–10

With a roster of alumni that includes Stephanie Blythe, Nathan Gunn, and Dawn Upshaw, the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program has solidified its place in the opera world as a leader in nurturing the next generation of operatic superstars. Hear a preview of three of these soon-to-be opera greats from the program—soprano Clarissa Lyons, mezzo-soprano Rihab Chaieb, and tenor Kang Wang—in intimate evenings of song in the Board of Officers Room.

ROOMFUL OF TEETH

There is no doubt that the ten Beethoven sonatas represent the most important body of work for violin and piano, setting the standard to which all other composers aspired for many years to come. Having received rave reviews for their recording of these brilliant works, celebrated duo Kristóf Baráti and Klára Würtz arrive at the Armory to interpret a selection of these wondrous works.

ANDREAS SCHOLL, countertenor TAMAR HALPERIN, harpsichord may 21–22

“It might be a new Golden Age of the countertenor, but few can equal the sheer beauty of tone and dramatic instinct displayed by Andreas Scholl.” —BBC Music Magazine The countertenor voice—a male who sings in the pitch range more typically associated with the alto or mezzo—came to prominence in the mid-17th century before falling from favor not even a century later. It has since enjoyed a powerful resurgence, with many countertenors now commanding praise on the world’s greatest concert and operatic stages. Andreas Scholl, who possesses one of the most beautiful countertenor voices of his generation, comes to the Board of Officers Room with a program that explores the poetry and artistic expression of the English Renaissance and Baroque at the height of the voice type’s original popularity.

march 31–april 1

“Roomful of Teeth is making some of the most rigorously venturesome and thrillingly inventive music being made by any ensemble, vocal or instrumental, today.” —The Nation The Grammy Award-winning Roomful of Teeth is a project dedicated to mining the expressive potential of the human voice, exploring singing traditions and techniques from around the world in an effort to commission new vocal works without borders. Having been heralded as “blazing a new trail” in choral music by The New Yorker, the group performs a program of works that include Elliot Cole’s Hanuman’s Leap and others that redefine vocal music for the 21st century.

CIRCLE MAP

“Epic... an unclassifiable hybrid of theatre, narration, singing, instrumental music and philosophical reflection.” —The Guardian (UK)

“To journey into Saariaho’s music is to be confronted with the darkest and most dazzling dimensions of your subconscious.” —The Guardian (UK)

Visionary director Heiner Goebbels stages this monumental work in a highly-imaginative production that infuses the work's journey through a sequence of non-narrative tableaus with stunning visual imagery to help convey its meaning, with references to Mondrian and Madame Curie as well as floating zeppelins and a flock of sheep. The International Contemporary Ensemble takes on the sonically varied score.

The revered New York Philharmonic returns to the Armory for the New York premiere of Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's Circle Map, a new work for orchestra and electronics that builds out from six stanzas by the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi, and D'om la Vrai Sens. The evening also includes the U.S. premiere of Lumiére et Pesanteur as well as Lonh, a work that combines medieval love poetry sung by rising soprano Jennifer Zetlan with an electronic score that manipulates sounds from nature to evoke a distant, luminous landscape.

MARTIN CREED

june 8–august 7 “Clever, dumb, smart and stupidly gorgeous. Whatever Creed does ...he brings a joyousness, lightness and objectivity to the task.” —The Guardian (UK) Turner Prize-winning, British artist Martin Creed continues his ongoing exploration into rhythm, scale, and order in his largest installation in the U.S. to date, a survey of his work from its most minimal moments to extravagant, larger-thanlife installations. Crossing all media including painting, drawing, music, dance, theater, film, sculpture, fashion, and more unclassifiable items such as runners or lights going on and off, his practice transforms the everyday into surprising meditations on existence and the invisible structures that shape our lives.

ARTISTS STUDIO “A [club]... which gave pleasure to so many... with facilities for playing billiards, chess, checkers and other games, a cold snack and innocuous beverages and cigars.” —The Seventh Regiment Gazette on the Veterans Room in 1910 Join us for a new series of events inspired by the exotic beauty of the newly reopened space and the inventive spirit of the designers who conceived it. Curated by jazz pianist, composer, artist, and MacArthur “Genius” Jason Moran, these performances feature an eclectic mix of contemporary styles in a cabaret setting that feels as relaxed and intimate as the artist's very own living room.

TARYN SIMON

september 13–25 “One of the leading artists to understand our moment in history.” —Interview Magazine Groundbreaking artist Taryn Simon creates an immersive new work unlike any other, in which the subjects themselves become the objects of exhibition. Simon directs and designs both an environment and experience created specifically for the drill hall that defies mediums and the lines between performer and viewer. Experienced after sundown under the cover of darkness, this multifaceted work – at once intensely solitary and somberly communal – blends performance, sound, and architecture. 14

ABOUT THE BOARD OF OFFICERS ROOM “The restoration of the Park Avenue Armory seems destined to set a new standard, not so much for its scale, but for its level of respect and imagination.” – The New York Times The Board of Officers Room is one of the most important historic rooms in America and one of the few remaining interiors by Herter Brothers. After decades of progressive damage and neglect, the room completed a revitalization in 2013 by the architecture team at Herzog & de Meuron and executive architects Platt Byard Dovell White Architects to transform the space into a state-of-the- art salon for intimate performances and other contemporary art programing. The Board of Officers Room is the third period room at the Armory completed (out of 18) and represents the full range of design tools utilized by the team including the removal of accumulated layers on the surfaces, the addition of contemporary lighting to the 1897 chandeliers, new interpretations of the stencil patterns on areas of loss, the addition of metallic finishes on new materials, new programming infrastructure, and custom designed furniture.

The room’s restoration is part of an ongoing $200-million transformation, which is guided by the understanding that the Armory’s rich history and the patina of time are essential to its character. A defining component of the design process for the period rooms is the close collaboration between architect and artisan. Highly skilled craftspeople working in wood, paint, plaster, and metals were employed in the creation of the building’s original interiors and the expertise – and hand – of similar artisans has been drawn upon for the renovation work throughout.

The renovation of the Board of Officers Room was made possible through the generosity of The Thompson Family Foundation. Cover photo by James Ewing.
