Fossils

What are fossils?? Fossils are remains of ancient life that have been preserved by natural processes. Ex:skeletons, sea shells, and footprints

Mold fossil A fossil formed when sediment fills the inside or covers the outside of a dead organism and the organism's remains do not persist, leaving just the shape and texture of the rock to indicate the organic material that was there

Cast fossil A cast fossil is where an animal dies and over time it's body parts decay leaving a void, that void is then filled with minerals and over time the minerals from rocks which leave a cast of the creature that died.

Petrified fossil Petrified fossils form when minerals replace the structure of an organism.

Preserved fossil A preserved fossil, also known as a "true form fossil," is one that remains intact, or nearly intact, because of the method in which it was fossilized.

Carbonized fossil result when organisms are rapidly buried, especially in low-oxygen conditions. Carbonized remains are thin, approximately two-dimensional films of carbon preserved on a flat surface of rock.

Trace fossil

forms when the mud or sand hardens to stone where a footprint, trail, or burrow of an organism was left behind.
