HIGHLAND PARK is perhaps best known as the home of Southern Methodist University, but it’s much more than a college town. PARK PLACES

There are parks galore in Highland Park, from Flippen Park (4421 N. Versailles Ave.) with its gazebo, fountain, and reflecting pool, to scenic Davis Park (4500 Drexel Ave.), which winds along Hackberry Creek and is home to a playground and pleasant walking paths.

On the south end of town, the 3.5-mile Katy Trail—an abandoned 19th-century rail line transformed into an iconic greenbelt—is perfect for walking, running, biking, and rollerblading. Nearby you’ll find numerous restaurants where young professionals and families gather. The Katy Trail Ice House (3127 Routh St., 214.468.0600) has an outdoor beer garden that’s popular with locals and visitors. Bring your dog along and stop to sample one of the many Texas-made beers on tap.

GREAT PLATES

Highland Park Village wouldn’t be the same without Mi Cocina, a TexMex neighborhood favorite (77 Highland Park Village, 214.521.6426). It’s known for its margaritas, and the best place to enjoy one is the third-floor indoor-outdoor bar, according to Snoddy.

Another favorite of hers for classic American cuisine is Hillstone (8300 A Preston Rd., 214.691.8991). Expect a wait even on weekdays, but if you can get in, it’s well worth it, she assures.

COUTURE AND CULTURE

Highland Park is a mecca for shoppers. Notable options include the historic open-air

Highland Park Village

(47 Highland Park Village, 214.443.9898). It was the first self-contained shopping center in the U.S. and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000. In addition to a wide variety of fashion and lifestyle boutiques, you’ll find numerous dining options.

Madison (72 Highland Park Village, 214.528.8118) is a standout for home goods and gifts from around the world, including fine china and crystal, pillows and throws, and baby gifts.

Another favorite shopping destination for Snoddy is The Plaza at Preston Center (8300 Preston Rd.). Visit Tootsies (Suite 200, 214.696.9993) for upscale women’s fashions. The store has a personal styling team on hand to assist shoppers. Don’t miss Pockets (4000 Villanova St., 214.368.1167) for fine menswear, tailoring, and made-to-measure clothing.

For entertainment, the Snoddys head to the nearby Dallas Arts District, home to numerous museums and the AT&T Performing Arts Center (2403 Flora St., 214.880.0202), which houses several performance venues for theater, opera, and dance, including the Winspear Opera House and the Wyly Theatre.
