↘ INTRODUCTION “Lessons” is my portfolio containing works from my learning process on the way to becoming a good graphic designer. PHILLIP MORRIS ANNUAL REPORT 2013 ↘ OB JECTI V E The objective of this project is to redesign the annual report of a given organization. The redesign process needs to come up with a strong visual concept and use typography to emphasize both brand and concept. ↘ APPROACH I was assigned the redesign of the annual report for Phillip Morris International, widely known as the biggest tobacco manufacturer. The main problem discussed in the development process was the fact that tobacco is an unhealthy product. Phillip Morris International is also concerned about health problems and is working on many projects to reduced the harm of tobacco. So, I created the concept of the gentleman, which is symbolic of gentleness, care, and luxury to emphasize the image and willingness of the brand.

BOOK COVERS REDESIGN

↘ OB JECTI V E The objective of this project is to redesign a set of book covers based on our interest. The redesign still needs to be appealing to the current target audiences for those books. ↘ APPROACH The book covers that I decided to redesign are about Asian tattoo culture. The set of books I chose included Bushido, Chinese Tattoo Art, and Sacred Skin. The main target audience of this book set is the people are enthusiasts of Asian traditional tattoos. I decided to design them with a traditional theme and apply illustration to emphasize each style of tattoo that was related to the content of the book.

Z ACK SNYDER F I L M F E S T I VA L ↘ OB JECTI V E The objective of this project is to design a film festival based on the works of a film director. We need to find the common threads that tie together the works of our chosen film director and translate them into visual design. ↘ APPROACH I decided to choose Zack Snyder for this film festival project based on my interest in his movies, which include 300, Watchmen, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, Suckerpunch. Most of his movies are related to comics and superheroes. Snyder has received recognition for his amazing visual effects, impressive action scenes, and comic style. But what is more interesting are his stories portraying the hero in a much different way than films in the past. These superhero movies are realistic and also show the diverse aspect of hero movies. From that point of view, I came up with Legends May Die as the name of this festival, based on the concept that everybody has a flaw even the mightiest. For the visuals, I tried to emphasized the fall of the mightiest person or object by using a dark mood, blood splatter, red color, and fractures. I also using comic style illustration and bold type to highlight the superhero theme.

I love to travel and I always worry during the research process about the safety of places that where I decided to travel. From my research, I decided to create a mobile application that can help the traveler to prepare themselves before traveling and also a travel safety kit that helps the traveler to handle problems during travel.

T I B E TA N J E W E L R Y S T O R E ↘ OB JECTI V E The objective of this project is to redesign the visual system and expand the possibilities of a public notice sign. We also need to create deliverables that relate to the intention of the sign. ↘ APPROACH The sign that I found was a promotional sign for a Tibetan jewelry store named “Reincarnation” on Haight street, San Francisco. The message of the sign was about their upcoming spring sale. So, I expanded it into a new brand system for the store based on Tibetan culture and applied the promotional message to deliverables which were packaging, poster, postcard and outdoor sign.

A D D I C T I O N E X P L O R AT I O N

↘ OB JECTI V E The objective is to explore an abstract topic and create a visual experiment based on the topic. Use materials in the process journal in order to create a final book that contains the core meaning of the topic. ↘ APPROACH The abstract topic that I chose based on my personal habits is the addiction such as design, games, sports, smoking, Japanese food. I experimented with addiction to everything from habits to materials. Everything in my experiments repetitive and furious. The final book is named “-Aholic” and brings in some part of the experiments as a visual communication tool to explain the topic. This project brought me out of my safe zone and make me understand myself and also understand visual communication.

URBAN LIFEST YLE M O B I L E A P P L I C AT I O N

↘ OB JECTI V E The objective is to develop an IOS app for urban San Franciscans aged 21-25 that leverages at least three native iPhone functions.

↘ APPROACH he topic that I chose to design IOS app for urban San Francisco is about the limited time of urban lifestyle. I want to help people saving their time for a simple thing in their life such as shopping and dressing themselves according to what I interested. So, I create an IOS app that can help people choose to save their time for preparing their cloth by help them organized the clothes in their closet. This app also let them explore new trend of fashion by using Kinect technology that let them try new clothing collection by just 1-2 clicks.

ARCHITECTURE POSTERS

↘ OB JECTI V E The objective of this project is to create a set of posters based on an architecture topic. This set of posters needs to rest on a concept inspired by the existing architecture. ↘ APPROACH The architecture topic that I chose is the unexpected ways to adapt your house to be perfect under different environmental circumstances, such as living with water, living with the wind and living with light. I came up with a concept named Living with Nature and used an existing adapted house design to create the poster.

M FA T H E S I S

↘ OVERVIEW Graffiti have a long history and also took a big role in an American art movement. Some groups of people think graffiti is beautiful and some disagree with that because of usage of gang culture and the vandalism issue. Graffiti vandalism is also a big issue in the United State that cost more than billion dollars to city department and property owners to clean up every year. The numbers of graffiti vandalism continue increasing every year and don’t have a tendency to decrease. ↘ OB JECTI V E Find the way to decrease illegal graffiti in the United States by using graphic design. ↘ APPROACH The research shows that some graffiti artists still doing vandalism because they can't get out off graffiti culture in the past and believe that graffiti suppose to be vandalism. Also, some graffiti artists who focused more on art doing vandalism because they don't have enough legal space to do their work. Vandalism from artists cause bad perception to people in the community and let them against graffiti in many ways. That also lead to the graffiti using by teenagers as a tool to express their anger or against their parents. According to the research, the opportunity that I found to solving this problem is to create an organization named "Graff-it-up" that will help educate people in the new generation about graffiti, encourage people in community to focus more on the artistic side of graffiti, and find more legal space for people who interesting in doing graffiti.
