POGATSHNIKS CRAFT RETIREMENT HOME h s i l y st
By Shannon Geisen sgeisen@ parkrapidsenterprise.com Through careful planning, Rick and Jean Pogatshnik have created efficient living space without sacrificing comfort. “East Crooked is just over the hill,” Rick said, noting they had a beautiful, two-story log cabin there which they sold to build their retirement home over the course of 13 months. It wasn’t difficult to navigate the stairs yet, he said, but you have to consider making adjustments as you get older. “We’d like to stay in our home as long as we could, so we just went to a one level,” he said of the new abode. The two-bedroom home and two-stall garage was completed in the fall of 2019. It’s set on about 10 wooded acres, a mix of quaking aspen, birch, white pine and oak. Jean said they picked out a home design, then tweaked it to fit their needs. Gartner-Johnson Construction was the contractor. Kitchen, dining room and living room flow into each other, which is a popular trend, according to Rick. “You can talk with everybody when you’re visiting,” added Jean.

The “up north” interior design, coupled with a 14-foot ceiling and open floor plan, makes for a cozy living space. Rick handcrafted a miniature scene, which rests on the fireplace mantel.
Refinancing Can Mean
Stone melds with old barn timber in the gas fireplace.

The centerpiece of their open floor plan is a 7-footwide and 12-foot-high stone fireplace. The stone originates from quarries located on a geologic feature called Chief Cliff in northwestern Montana. “To eliminate some of the weight, we had some of the stone sliced,” Rick said, “but it is full rock.” The hearth is made of stone from a Hibbing mine. It was purchased from Northland Monument & Granite, near Remer. A piece of the same stone forms a “mountain” shape on the timber mantle. “It just gives it more depth,” Jean said of the design element. The timber hails from an old barn that was torn down west of Brainerd. “It was black and grey from the weather, so I just power-washed it and put a lacquer on it,” Rick said. Rick has a background
in construction, having built a previous home in Rice, Minn. “This is the first house we ever actually had built for us,” he noted. Inspired by a downtown Park Rapids store, Jean decided to use vinyl, snap-together flooring as a backdrop to the fireplace. “I said that would be perfect to put on the wall,” she recalled, “to give it more color, depth and character.” The tedious work – measuring, cutting, glueing and nailing the flooring to the wall – proved challenging to the lead carpenter, Joseph Higgins. It had never been done before. “It was time-consuming,” Rick recalled, adding it took about four days. “He went with the flow, spent a lot of time on it, but it turned out nice.” “He did really fantastic,” Jean said.

Keeping a simple, low-maintenance routine was at the top of their mind. For instance, waterproof, vinyl planking runs throughout the home, except for the tile bathrooms, for easy cleaning. “It has some nice texture, yet it doesn’t really trap any dirt,” Rick pointed out.
In-floor heating in the concrete slab provides consistent warmth in the 1,650-square-foot living space, along with the gas fireplace with five different heat settings. The Diamond Kote smart siding comes with a 40-year guarantee. “I know the contractor liked to put it on – just the way it’s made it goes on nice and it’s pre-finished, even the window trims and
inside corners,” Rick said. The Pogatshniks also aimed to hire local craftspeople and purchase materials – such as furniture, flooring, cabinetry and more – from local vendors. “We kept the money here in the area,” Rick said. “A lot of these small stores in this area, they struggle. That’s why we kept everything local.”

Antique decor gives the Pogatshniks’ home a rustic, farmhouse feel. Jean selected pieces from the Tin Ceiling, while also incorporating family heirlooms and her own handiwork. For instance, Jean refurbished a buffet that was given to her parents as a wedding gift. She
built a curio cabinet out of barn wood and chicken wire, filling the shelves with green mason jars. It’s one of many furniture pieces in their home that Jean remodeled or built from scratch. She also distressed corbels and incorporated them into the archway between the main room and a hallway leading to the bedrooms.

White, gray and red add interest to this living area.
COMBO PLATTER How to find the right color combination for your space By Cathy Hobbs Tribune News Service When you think of traditional color combinations, what typically comes to mind? Perhaps neutral colors such as black and white or tan paired with brown. Pairing the right colors together can add interest while also creating an inviting space. Afraid to experiment with different color combinations? Here are some top tips.
Do
1. Pair strong foundation colors together such as white, black and gray. 2. Incorporate a pop of color with your color scheme. 3. Consider unexpected, versatile base colors such as indigo or chocolate brown. 4. Use contrast elements and pair light and dark colors. 5. Use citrus colors such as orange, yellow and green in spaces in which you are looking to capture the eye and add interest.
Don’t
1. Be afraid to use jewel or metallic tones to add color and interest. 2. Pair the same tint, tone and shade of a color in the same room when looking to achieve a vibrant sense of color. Using contrasting colors will have more impact. 3. Forget to incorporate color through the use of

Building supply prices, supplies hit by COVID-19
Dennis Doeden / Forum News Service
Paul Martinson was a seminary professor and missionary, but he wanted to do something physical in retirement. That meant siding his home on Lake Movil with 50 tons of rock.
BEMIDJI MAN COMPLETES 19-YEAR, 50-TON rock project ON LAKE HOUSE By Dennis Doeden Forum News Service Paul Martinson hadn’t played with rocks since he was a teenager. He was a missionary and seminary professor, so most of his time was spent reading, writing, teaching and ministering. But he wanted to do something more physical in retirement and, by golly, he took it to the extreme. Martinson, 85, recently completed a project that took 19 years.
Two weeks ago, he placed the last of about 50 tons of rock on his eight-sided Lake Movil house. “I really wondered if he would ever get done,” said Paul’s wife, Ida. “But he did a beautiful job. I’m just amazed at it. He was a professor and all he ever did was read books, and then suddenly he would work on this all summer long.” The Martinsons designed their home on property that had been in Paul’s family for years. An
older cabin was torn down, and Russ Schoenfelder Construction of Bemidji built the new one in 2000 and 2001, leaving the outside unfinished. The rocks were soon delivered, and Paul got to work — not knowing just how long it would take to finish the exterior. Did he have a goal in mind? “Not really,” Paul said, grinning at his wife. “He told me

By Robin Fish rfish@parkrapidsenterprise. com Local building supply merchants say prices of lumber and other building materials have gone up, and supplies have gone down, since the COVID-19 pandemic rolled in. “Prices went up dramatically, and there are things that are getting harder to get,” said Dean Hanisch, salesperson with Park Rapids Building Supply. For example, he said 5/4-inch pressure-treated decking and green-treated lumber have become tough to find. Nevertheless, he said his store has remained pretty well stocked. Nevis Lumber owner Karrin Lindow said, “We’re stocked and ready to go, if someone wants to build a home.” She declined to comment further, other than to admit, “There are definitely supply issues, yes.” Wes Renneberg, CEO of Renneberg Hardwoods in Menahga, said hardwoods – used for interior finishes such as cabinets, flooring or paneling – haven’t been affected as much by supply chain issues. “We’ve seen some minor supply disruptions,” he said. “I’m starting to feel a little bit of price pressure, but nothing like you read about for the softwoods.” Meanwhile, demand for their products has been steady, Renneberg said. “Basically, all lum-
ber prices have more than doubled, and treated decking is virtually impossible to get,” said Nick Kueber, CEO of the Two Inlets Mill. “It’s just gotten crazy. There is such a short supply that it ain’t even funny.” Kueber said this affects not only home improvements, but public construction as well. “I think it’s going to affect everybody, really.”
Drilling down to details
“I’ve been told that, because of the type of the wood that I use for the decking, it’ll be spring before we get any of that back in again,” Kueber explained. “Two-by material, in the treated (category), is hit-and-miss whether you can even find it. You’ll call four or five different places. One of them will say, ‘I can have it in two weeks.’ And now the framing lumber is getting to be somewhat of the same issue. You gotta call three or four places in order to find it, and you still might have to wait for a week or two to get it.” Asked if customers could work with alternative materials, Kueber said, “For the decks and stuff, a person could use cedar for the tops, in place of the treated decking.” Indoors, he said, you could use cedar or composites. “But there’s more of a significant cost there.

Pandemic causes surge in homebuilding projects Forum News Service
After they built their massive tree house, Will and Peggy Line of Wadena, Minn., decided to start renting the space out to vacationers.
Wadena couple rents out massive tree house to summer vacationers By Kevin Wallevand Forum News Service On the edge of Wadena, near a picturesque wetland sits a tree house, but not the kind many children grew up with. “It was kind of a fun obsession,” Will Line said. Birds can be seen from windows looking out at the tree’s many branches. Its wraparound porch is several feet off the ground. The massive, two-floor tree house is even complete with all the comforts and necessities of home. Will and Peggy Line wanted a small tree house for fun. It was supposed to be a kid’s tree house, but they kept coming up with new plans, and the tree house began to grow. “Anything is possible — anything. We had unlimited access to it and no parental control and nobody to tell us this is
the worst idea we ever had,” Peggy Line said. The tree house took two years to build, and at first Will and Peggy lived in it themselves. Then, they had a vision to let others share in the treetop experience. “I really had my time to live the dream and now it was time to let someone else stay and and dream bigger,” Peggy Line said. Chantel and Tristan Yantes make up one of many families who have rented the tree house this summer. “It is way different than we thought it would be,” Chantel Yantes said. “When you look at this, it is like you are a little kid again, like a princess.” “My mom was saying we are going to spend the night and I thought, ‘how are we going to sleep in a rinky-dink tree house,’
but it is amazing and cool,” Tristan Yantes said. The Lines have been renting out the tree house for 10 years, and they are taking reservations for 2021. Because of the pandemic, the tree house has been full this summer, with people wanting to avoid crowds. Vacationers are spending time with family away from everything but the birds. “There is a dream that happened here, and it is bigger than most people realize they can do. And when I decided to share the tree house, I said, ‘Lord, don’t send anyone who cannot be blessed, and he has honored that prayer and everyone who has come here,’” Peggy Line said. Those interested in making a reservation can call the Line family at 218639-8017.
By Lorie Skarpness lskarpness@parkrapidsenterprise.com Beginning with the state’s stay-at-home order in March, home improvement projects have been booming throughout the area. Whether using vacation money to make their home a retreat, remodeling a space into a home office or making other upgrades to their residence, lumber and building supply businesses have struggled to keep up with demand. Karrin Lindow owns Nevis Lumber. She said she was surprised by how the order actually brought in more business. “It was pretty funny here because the first week of the stay at home order in March I sent all my employees home thinking that because everyone would be staying at home we wouldn’t have anything to do here,” she said. “That lasted a day and we had to call everyone back because we were so busy I couldn’t possibly keep up on my own. We had a lot of people coming in with projects they’d been putting off for years because they didn’t have time but now they had time. We ended up doing a lot more volume than usual so that was a nice surprise.” Lindow said there is a lot more building going

A perfect spot to relax and watch the sunset over 11th Crow Wing Lake, the unique swing under the pergola is made of decking. Pam Raden said the deck added living space to their cabin and is a popular gathering place. Hegg Construction built the deck, which includes a pergola with a swing made from decking. The deck is 14 feet wide and about 30 feet long and incorporates ideas she found on Pintrest. “It really has expanded our liveable space,” she said. “We wanted a place that was fun and relaxing, and we love watching sunsets from our swing. The swing adds movement to the space and I love the planters.” Raden lives in Sartell, but her family has been on 11th Crow Wing since the 1950s when her Deck creates unique grandparents, Rusty and Marie Miller, built the living space Pam Raden lives on first cabin. on and that demand, along with supply issues related to COVID-19, has meant some items are impossible to get. She said building projects are kind of dropping off a little now that kids are back in school, adding the next big project on people’s minds is deer stands. “I’m curious to see if that will boom also,” she said. “Some people have extra money they’re not used to having so they are using it for a variety of projects like completing rooms or garages.”

six to eight years,” she answered with a laugh. Paul’s fascination with rocks began in Hong Kong. His parents were missionaries there, and one day as a teenager he decided to roll a large rock down a hill near their home. “I thought it would be interesting to see how that rock goes down this hill,” Paul said. “I walked over to the edge of the walkway and gave it a throw. And then I saw it was going directly to a small hut. There were a lot of people fleeing from China, and there were these little huts where they would stay. I thought, ‘My word, this rock is going straight for the hut, and if they have a small child who knows it might kill him or her’.” But instead, the rock hit a bank, flew up in the air and disappeared. It apparently came to rest in a hole before reaching the hut. “Divine intervention, I guess,” Paul said. “That was the end of my throwing rocks.” Until years later when it was time to work on his rock house on Lake Movil.

jumping worms
Beware of in soil, gardening mulch The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is cautioning gardeners and anglers to be on the lookout for invasive jumping worms. These destructive worms can quickly degrade soils and damage garden plants and lawns. “Jumping worms are a relatively new invasive species in Minnesota and they are a threat to gardens and forests,” said Laura Van Riper, DNR terrestrial invasive species coordinator. “They make rich soil more like coffee grounds. They eat plant roots, damaging garden plants and sod.” Jumping worms are a type of earthworm that looks similar to other common earthworms, such as nightcrawlers. They are called “jumping worms” because they wiggle intensely when disturbed and sometimes appear to be jumping. Native to Asia, jump-

Jumping worms are an invasive, nonnative earthworm. They are called “jumping worms” because of their unusual behavior when disturbed – they move like a snake and sometimes appear to be jumping. A light-colored ring extends around the body and may be more prominent than in other earthworms. ing worms have been confirmed in limited areas of Minnesota since 2006, mainly in the Twin Cities and western suburbs and in Rochester. It’s believed
that they were spread throughout North America by people moving potted plants, soil, compost, mulch and fishing bait. Jumping worms cannot
be legally introduced into the environment in Minnesota and are also a poor choice for bait because they break into segments when handled.
ing worms, the DNR has produced two short videos. One video features Dr. Lee Frelich, director of the University of Minnesota Center for Forest Ecology, talking about how jumping worms are sometimes found in garden soils and packaged garden mulch products. Another video focuses on why jumping worms should not be purchased or used for fishing bait. If people think they’ve found jumping worms, they should take high-resolution photos showing the ring around the worm’s body in relation to its head and report jumping earthworms using www.eddmaps.org or contact the DNR Information Center at 888-646-6367 or info.dnr@state.mn.us. The videos and more information about jumping worms and other terrestrial invasive species are available on the DNR website.

Framing material, for your normal framing of your buildings, that’s getting to be hit-and-miss whether you can find it or not. You might have to wait a couple of weeks to get it.” Kueber has heard that electrical fixtures, such as can lights, are starting to be tough to come by. Meanwhile, he said, “Windows are out eight weeks now. … We’ve got one company that we buy from, used to be two weeks, maybe three at the most, and they just hit eight weeks out.” Also, “Shingles have gotten to be a little bit of an issue,” said Kueber, noting that shingle manufacturers have temporarily stopped making some colors in an effort to keep up with more popular colors. “Sheet goods have just gotten totally out of hand,” he said, referring to plywood and oriented strand board, used for wall, roof and floor sheeting. However, gypsum wall board and insulation seem to be in good shape, he said. “But then, we haven’t reached that season yet, either. It’s going to be starting real quick. The people who started framing in May are going to be needing that stuff real soon.” He said siding suppliers have given notice that they’ve been put on allocation as to how much wood they can get, “So, that means we’re going to be in a little bit of a pinch, getting what we need, also.”
“The good news is, jumping worms are not well established in Minnesota and there are actions people can take to prevent their spread. We need gardeners and anglers to be vigilant and to contact the DNR when they think they’ve found jumping worms,” Van Riper said. Other steps that help: ► Don’t buy worms advertised as jumping worms, “snake worms,” “Alabama jumpers” or “crazy worms” for any purpose. ► Anglers should dispose of any unwanted bait worms in the trash. ► Gardeners should inspect incoming mulch or plants for jumping worms and if swapping plants with friends, wash off the soil and share the plants as bare root plants. ► Recreationists should brush the mud off their boots and equipment. To help Minnesotans identify and report jump-

Local lumberyard personnel cited high demand and lumber mill closures as possible reasons lumber prices are high and supplies are low as the summer of COVID-19 turns to fall.
What’s behind the issues?
“I think it’s just that old adage of supply and demand,” said Hanisch. “Everybody’s been doing a lot of building this summer, and people are off. Everybody is doing home remodeling. It all adds up. Plus, there’s a lot of mills and plants around the country that have had to shut down or cut back on staff because of the COVID.” “I’m sure that there have been some places that have shut down or are not operating at full capacity because of COVID,” Renneberg agreed. “So, I’m sure there are some supply chain issues.” As for why supply-end slowdowns are affecting softwoods more than softwoods, he said, “We’re a pretty fragmented industry. … The big (softwood) mills out west – they’re so big, if they shut down for a few weeks, it actually affects supply, where, (hardwoods) have so many small operators that I don’t think it affects it near as much.”
Kueber, meanwhile, senses that the demand side is driving these issues. “What’s going on is, everybody’s got all this extra money, and so they’re fixing this, fixing that,” he said. “We went from seeing, on an average, four to six people a day, to anywhere from 25 to 40 people a day, walking in the door.” In contrast to other industries that have slowed down since COVID-19 turned business-as-usual upside down, Kueber said, “I’m hoping winter gets here pretty soon, so my feet stop burning. It’s just crazy. It’s been at a dead run since the first day of the shutdown.” At the same time, he admits that what’s good for business now may hurt later. “The big crash is going to be a real crash,” he said. “I’ve got a feeling, when things slow up, the supplies start getting back up, it’s going to drop really fast. So, anything that anybody has made on the way up is going to be subtracted on the way down.”

s r e l l i k d e e w can cause Lawn
damage to gardens and trees
By Don Kinzler There aren’t many things in the world of gardening that cause fear. I’m not concerned that a giant Venus fly trap is going to swallow my arm, and if I trip over a cucumber vine, I’ve got plenty of padding. But I honestly do fear one thing, and that’s collateral damage from weed killers applied to area lawns. This summer I’ve received an alarming number of photos and samples of ailing vegetables, trees and shrubs whose symptoms, when analyzed, were caused by weed killers applied to nearby lawns. A weed killer is more appropriately called an herbicide, a word that literally means “plant killer,” and an herbicide doesn’t always distinguish between a dandelion plant and a tomato plant. Much good can be said about herbicides, whether synthetic or organic, because they can prevent invasive, non-native plant species from overrunning our yards, gardens, prairies and forests. But if not used wisely, cautiously and judiciously, while carefully following all label instructions, herbicides can cause unintended consequences, damaging the plants we value. When we apply herbicides to weeds, there are several ways the product can damage the desirable plants in our yards and gardens. Herbicide spray droplets can drift through the air and land on valuable plants adjacent to the area being sprayed. Some herbicides volatilize, becoming gas vapors that travel into unintended areas, gassing desirable plants. Some herbicides move readily downward through the soil into the rootzone of trees, where the plant-killing com-

“My cousin owns that place now,” she said. Raden’s property is on the opposite end of the lake from the family cabin. She enjoys spending time at the cabin with her boyfriend, Scott Weber, and her kids, T.J. who attends Bemidji State University, and Tianna who teaches in St. Cloud. “The cabin is the place where everyone gathers,” she said. “We’re up here a lot.”

pounds are taken up by the tree’s root system and absorbed internally into the tree. If plants in our yard or garden are doing poorly, how can we tell if it’s from herbicide damage or another cause, such as disease? The symptoms vary by the type of product. Herbicides used on lawns commonly list one or more of the following active ingredients on the label: 2,4-D, dicamba, triclopyr, MCPA or MCPP. These herbicides kill broadleaf weeds like dandelions, and can likewise damage broadleaf yard and garden trees, shrubs, vegetables and flowers
putting an addition on their house, redoing their kitchen, a little bit of everything” he said. “People couldn’t go anywhere or do anything for awhile there so they were working on their homes. We still have cedar and composite decking so lots of people have been using that. People aren’t going on vacations as much. Lots of people came up to their cabins for the summer and never left because they just worked from there and did projects around their cabin.” Other projects people have been working on include updating and windows on their home to make their home more energy efficient. “We’ve been much busier than usual since this COVID started,” he said.

if the product comes in contact. Common damage symptoms include twisted leaves, leaves that cup upward or downward, narrow strap-like leaves on the newest growth, and distorted leaves and twigs. I’ve received many such samples this season of tomato plants, beans, potatoes, trees, and flowers. Herbicides containing the active ingredient glyphosate (original Roundup) are non-selective, meaning they kill or injure nearly all susceptible plants, weeds and desirables. Symptoms of exposure to glyphosate include yellowing of leaves, general decline or death, and sometimes a twiggy “witches’ broom” growth on branch ends. Following are ways to prevent injury to desirable plants when spraying for weeds: ► Read the label direc-
tions completely to see how, when and where the product should be applied. The label is a legal document. ► Fine spray droplets drift more readily than large droplets. Use a coarse spray with low pressure, instead of a fine, high-pressured mist. ► Spray when the air is calm. ► High temperatures above 80 to 85 degrees F. during or immediately after application may cause some herbicides to vaporize and move to other areas. ► Spray nozzles might apply product in a wider band than is visible, causing over-spray on adjoining desirable plants. ► Lawn herbicides containing dicamba and triclopyr are well-known to travel downward into the soil, causing damage to trees as the roots absorb the chemical. Don’t apply
these products over the rootzone of trees, which can extend outward from the trunk a distance equal to twice the tree’s height or more. ► Spot-spray weeds when possible, instead of blanket-spraying the entire lawn. ► Consider alternatives such as digging and smothering. ► Use protective cardboard spray shields if spraying close to tree trunks or other desirable plants. ► Farm-type chemicals might not be registered or safe for use on turfgrass. Much damage is caused
by non-label use of farm herbicides on rural lawns. There’s another less visible, but very serious way that herbicide injury is occurring in flower and vegetable gardens. Compost, made from herbicide-treated lawngrass, may injure plants when added to the soil. Manure can be tainted when horses and cattle eat feed that was treated with herbicides that pass through their digestive system.
