The Lorenz-Hill home sits on Potato Lake. The upper half is cedar-sided, primarily for appearance. “I like natural. I don’t like steel. I don’t like vinyl,” Lorenz said.

Potato Lake couple designs Northwoods-style home By Shannon Geisen sgeisen@parkrapidsenterprise. com Large, south-facing windows and an open floor design make Richard Lorenz and Cindy Hill’s new Potato Lake home a sunny, welcoming abode. Both originally from Litchfield, they now live year ‘round in lake and pine country. Lorenz is a retired dentist; Hill a retired hairstylist and business owner. “There’s a moderate number of people from Litchfield with a place on Potato Lake, for whatever reason,” Lorenz said of his neighbors. “Of course, making new friends is always nice in life.”

Richard Lorenz and Cindy Hill

For many years, Lorenz owned a place on Third Crow Wing. He bought the Potato Lake property, approximately 23 acres, in 2000, but construction plans didn’t commence until 2014 after their retirement. Together, they conceived of a floor plan, incorporating the original footprint of an existing home built in 1971. Being in disrepair, that house was demolished. Lorenz and Hill broke ground in June 2015. “The old house was shaped like this, but wasn’t quite this big,” Hill explained. The new home extends farther away from the lake, allowing for a larger, two-car garage. The general contractor was Mark Branstrom Construction. The couple moved in last August, but finishing touches were completed this spring. Landscaping improvements continue. Lorenz and Hill opted for a woody, natural decor throughout. In the master bedroom, pickled knotty pine is accentuated by dark trim. “We whitewashed it,” Hill said. “We did the boards ourselves. We like it really well. It turned out really well and it won’t get any darker. I think it’s an old style – maybe 30, 40 years ago people were

Pinecone-inspired porch lights are a quaint fixture. doing a lot of it.” Whitewashing is a straightforward technique: a gallon of white latex paint mixed with a gallon of water, stirred vigorously. They purchased a rustic, hickory headboard in Pequot Lakes. It’s perfectly suited for the Northwoods home. A three-season sitting porch captures sun and breezes off the lake. “It’s a great place to nap,” Hill said. Similar to the master bedroom, they opted to graywash the ash paneling in both the screened porch and Lorenz’s office. “That gave us a little bit of rustic look,” said Hill. Potted basil flourishes on the 70-foot, wrap-around deck. “We wanted to be able to

Hill explained. Oak, birch, ash and white pine surround the lake home.

Five helpful hints for a clean and clutter-free home Papers piling up? Toys taking over? If your home is more cluttered than clean, you’re not alone — 85 percent of homeowners say that organization and storage is the most desired feature in a home, according to OrganizedLiving.com. Your clean-home dreams can come true. In fact, simply getting rid of clutter alone can eliminate 40 percent of housework in the average home, according to the National Soap and Detergent Association. With a few helpful hints your home can get organized… and stay that way. Conquer a clutter-free kitchen With a wealth of gadgets, it’s no wonder the kitchen is a clutter culprit. To start your cleanse, remove everything from drawers and cupboards. If you haven’t used an item in the last month (unless it’s a holiday

necessity) – purge it! Next up, clean and line drawer and shelf surfaces with a quality shelf line. Not only will it protect them from dirt and grime, but it also offers a good gauge: if you can’t see the shelf liner, it’s time to purge again! Get a new spin on the laundry room

Sometimes the laundry room needs a bit of cleaning itself. Detergents and other buildup can cause washing machine odors. Run white vinegar through a cycle to sanitize it with ease. Next, improve efficiency and reduce fire hazards by thor

The average home has 45 light sockets which means you probably have more light bulbs than just about any home product, and yet the lighting aisle can still be a daunting place. With the right knowledge, you can save money, protect the environment and bring the best features of your home to life. Here are four quick tips to get you started: ► Opt for LED. By 2020, half of all residential sockets will have converted to LEDs, which is good news, as LEDs can last over 10 years and use up to 85 percent less energy than the traditional lighting

you may use today. Available in a variety of shapes, sizes, wattages and color temperatures, they are becoming increasingly affordable, too. Just a few years ago, LEDs topped $40, but today you can find a high-quality LED for less than $5. To help people make the commitment to LEDs, GE is asking the public to take the pLEDge to swap just one traditional bulb to an LED bulb. Visit gelighting.com/pledge to take the pledge and earn a coupon toward an LED purchase. ► Pay attention to color temperatures, wattag

“There’s a crick down here that locals know as Rice Creek,” Lorenz said. The brook connects Potato with Rice Lake. A game warden told the couple “it’s the lifeblood for Potato Lake for northerns,” Hill said. “In the spring the northerns go up that way to spawn, then fry come back down.” Two guest bedrooms, a guest bath, kitchenette, craft room and sitting room constitute the lower level of the home. A polished, grey soapstone wood stove is one notable feature of the sitting room. Lorenz always wanted one. “Soapstone stoves are beautiful stoves,” he said. “When we were kids

The higher this number is, the brighter the light will be. And remember: when you invest in an LED that’s expected to last more than a decade, you want one that’s going to reliably live up to your expectations, so brands that have been around for awhile and have proven their commitment to quality truly matter in this space. ► Identify how you use each room and the mood you’d like to create. Use comfortable, soft white light in cozy places like bedrooms, family rooms and dining rooms. Active spaces like laundry rooms and playrooms can benefit from an energetic daylight bulb. Today, select manufacturers, are taking the guesswork out of the equation by listing whether each bulb has a warm or cool tone and by offering room and use recommendations on the packaging. A warm white light will have a lower K (Kelvin) number, while a cool daylight will have a higher K number. ► Put your home in its best light. Even with the right colors, perfect accessories and trendy furniture, a home can look lackluster. Look for new options, such as GE’s High Definition LED light bulbs which are engineered with a higher color rendering index for greater color contrast and boldness over an average bulb. This means the colors and features in each room can look even better. Just imagine a room makeover in five minutes simply by changing your light bulbs. With today’s advanced options, there’s no better time than now to shed some new light in every room in your house. Information provided StatePoint.

oughly cleaning lint from dryer vents — both inside and out. Finally, use labeled baskets to ensure everything has its place. And, since the laundry room is often a catch-all location, label one as a “put away” basket and be sure to empty it daily, putting its contents back in their proper places. Control bathroom chaos From towels to toiletries, bathrooms hold a lot of “stuff,” which can make organizing feel like a losing battle. Create a de-cluttering schedule. Since many toiletries, such as toothbrushes and make-up, should be replaced quarterly, this is the perfect time to purge. Empty drawers and linen cabinets and toss out items that are old or aren’t being used. Shelf liner can once again be a useful addition before putting items back, since products with Clorox antimicrobial protection can add an extra level of

clean by helping prevent the growth of odor-causing mold and mildew on the liner. Plus, you can toss it in the wash for easy cleaning. Gear-up garage organization From toys to tools to seasonal gear, the garage has it all. Unfortunately, 25 percent of two-car garages are so cluttered that there isn’t room to park a car, reports the U.S. Department of Energy. Annually, remove everything and categorize items into “keep,” “sell/ donate,” and “trash” piles. Next, designate sections of the garage for “work” (hardware and gardening tools) and “play” (toys, bikes and balls). Create vertical storage by adding hooks and floor-to-ceiling shelves. Finally, label bins, boxes and shelves to encourage everyone to maintain the new-found organization. Purr-fectly clean pets Humans aren’t the only ones accumulating clutter or making messes. Five ways to give a room a makeover Does a room in your home need an update? There are a range of projects from large to small that can help you transform any space for maximum utility and better design. Here are five great ideas. ► Update flooring. When updating your home flooring, consider some hot new trends – like turning to salvaged vintage lumber. More homeowners are including this in their remodel plans because it looks

great, gives your home a mark of distinction, and is eco-friendly. Another on-trend, low-maintenance option is cement. This versatile material can be painted or stained to give your room any look you want. Keep it simple or use stencils to give your floor an impressive design. ► Make something old new again. Turn an antique piece of furniture into something new. Paint chair legs a bright color, decoupage a tabletop, or

reupholster a loveseat in a favorite fabric. Don’t have an existing piece of furniture? Hit up local yard sales or antique shops in search of the perfect find. For inspiration, visit pinterest.com. ► Modernize a fireplace. An older wood fireplace can be dirty, drafty, high maintenance – and spendy, wasting up to $200 in energy costs annually. Consider updating your hearth with a gas fireplace insert for an upgrade that can give you

Three mini-makeover ideas to refresh a room Looking to bring new energy to a space? Hoping to update that outdated décor? These easy tips can help you revitalize any space in your home with minimal time and effort — utilizing color, accessories, accents and more. A new color scheme Looking at the same wall color day after day can be uninspiring. Consider a new color scheme to change the dynamic of your space. Blue hues are shown to create a calming, tranquil effect, making them the perfect choice for a baby’s nursery or spa-like bathroom. Pastels are also a fun way to stimulate the same soft, calming effect of blue, and their less saturated nature creates a unique twist. Color is also a great way to explore new looks. Both coastal and farmhouse styles are easy to accomplish through a neutral color palette, giving you plenty of opportunities to incorporate your unique style accents. Find a focal point When choosing a design aesthetic, many find inspiration from an accessory, like a piece of

a return on your investment and beautify your space. ► Create a statement wall. Sometimes less really is more, particularly when it comes to walls. Consider painting or papering just one wall of your room in a bold, bright color or design. This same wall may also serve as a gallery to feature smaller artwork, photographs, clocks and other keepsakes. Before you get out the hammer and nails, plan your lay-

out to achieve an appealing balance of colors, size and spacing. ► Overhaul lighting. It’s time to say goodbye to boring, utilitarian lighting and say hello to new fixtures that strike the right tone and create ambiance. This is one of the easiest updates that can create a big impact – whether you are inspired by rustic, quirky or classic designs. You may choose to replace overhead lighting with floor lamps, swap outdated fixtures

Accessories and accents Revamp a tired space with new and inexpensive accessories. A new duvet cover, vibrant pillows, or a statement floor rug can help to refresh a room without a high price tag. Adding in mixed metal items can add texture

to an otherwise boring countertop, while positioning items in groups of threes can create a visually pleasing setup. Go shopping in your own home. You can also switch things up by using objects from around the house, to make a space new again. Decorating a built-in bookshelf with jars, candles, pottery and those favorite items you just can’t find the right place for, can make your room feel new without having to purchase anything at all. Updating a room doesn’t need to cost a fortune or take months to complete. Mini-makeovers that focus on smaller details can make all the difference. (StatePoint)

artwork or textile. However, highly functional objects that feature great design can also serve as your muse. One such example is a ceiling fan. Its elevated, and often central location, can serve as a stylish focal point, while enhancing comfort. Whether you decide to incorporate a fan that blends into the existing style or opt for a statement piece, the addition can help put a new spin on your room.

for on-trend options like chandeliers or lantern-style pendants, or add task lighting in key areas; just be sure to test out your arrangement to ensure it’s sufficiently functional. And while you’re making these changes, remember to use energy efficient bulbs. Whatever the scope of your project entails, you can give the rooms of your home a fresh look and eye-catching appeal. rugs on hardwood floors or to an already carpeted area. Not only will this add color and texture to a room, the extra cushioning will ensure feet avoid the cold, so you can keep your slippers tucked away. ► Update the guest bedroom. With the holidays on the horizon, there’s no better time to give your guest bedroom a cozy update. Surprise overnight guests by painting the room a moody green or blue that is on trend and sets a relaxing tone. Don’t forget to incorporate little touches like books or a plant on the nightstand to make them feel at home.

► Update window coverings. Heavy drapes keep out drafts and make a room feel luxurious. Switch out summer sheers for curtains with a heavier weight, or layer drapes for an elegant look. ► Don’t underestimate the power of white paint. Vibrant doesn’t always have to mean using bold colors. Make a space feel brand new again by repainting wood trim a crisp white color. It may seem like a tedious task, but with a little effort, you can completely transform a room. Start by filling in any imperfections, sanding and cleaning the surfaces to be painted. Then, you’ll want to tape off

the wall next to the trim so your handiwork looks like that of a professional. For this job you’ll want a quality painter’s tape to help ensure your work looks professional and allows you to achieve the sharpest paint lines possible. When painting trim, opt for a semi-gloss paint to make elements stand out. Grab your pumpkin spice latte and start adding little touches like these to your home, for a cozy and stylish season. shopping for refrigerators, French-door style units may offer even more access, making it easy for homeowners to slide fruit trays, sheet cakes and other large items into the fridge. Extra lighting A kitchen should be a balance of form and function. A combination of overhead lighting, decorative lighting and task lighting can illuminate all areas of the space effectively. Appliance garages Appliance garages are popular kitchen additions, too. Set at countertop level, these cabinets allow people to keep small appliances plugged in but tucked neatly behind closed doors. Kitchen remodels are a sizable investment, and renovations can be customized to make the kitchen more hospitable for all in residence.

Must-have kitchen remodel features Homeowners looking to renovate often see room for improvement in their kitchens and bathrooms. The National Association of Home Builder’s Remodeling Market Index Survey, which measures conditions in the remodeling market, indicates that, in 2015, the two most common remodeling jobs were bathroom remodels (81 percent) and kitchen remodels (79 percent). According to HGTV and Statistics Brain, a new kitchen remodel for a kitchen measuring 12 by 12 feet may cost homeowners anywhere from $17,000 to $37,000. Before investing so much into their remodeling projects, homeowners should think carefully about the features that will improve their time spent at home. When planning a kitchen renovation, homeowners may want to consider the following upgrades to make the room more enjoyable while improving its functionality.

With the shorter days and cooler nights of fall can come the urge to hibernate. But first prepare yourself and your home for the season with these cozy and warm accents that will make time spent indoors cozier. ► Incorporate metallic décor. While you’re breaking out the pumpkins, cornstalks and cornucopias, take a different approach this season and incorporate copper or brass accents. These metallic items will elevate décor, and the orange and yellow tones will complement the changing leaves outside. Try picking out a unique candelabra or vase or small decorative pieces to style the room. ► Makeover the fireplace. Fireplace season is on the horizon, so start thinking about new ways to make it the focal point of a room. Items to improve outdoor living spaces The popularity of outdoor living spaces has been growing for years. A 2014 study from the home remodeling and design platform Houzz found that 56 percent of homeowners were making updates to improve their yards for entertaining. Similarly, nearly 60 percent of architectural practices surveyed by the American Institute of Architects in 2016 said outdoor living spaces were popular features in the homes they built. Outdoor living spaces may also be sound investments for homeowners looking to improve the resale value of their properties. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2017 “Cost vs. Value” report, outdoor living spaces returned between 55 and 71 percent of homeowners’ initial investments at resale. When planning an outdoor living space, homeowners with ample backyards have much to work with. However, to make the most of the space while simultaneously hoping to get as strong a return on their investments as possible, homeowners should look to create spaces that offer broad appeal and are not too personalized. The following are some popular outdoor living space features homeowners may want to

items needed to prepare drinks for their guests.

consider. Outdoor kitchens Outdoor kitchens allow homeowners to prepare more than just traditional backyard barbecue fare. A standalone charcoal grill in the backyard might get the job done, but a built-in gas grill complete with burners and surrounding granite countertop makes for a more functional outdoor entertaining space. Bars Indoor entertaining areas often include bars, so it makes sense that homeowners want to include a place to prepare and serve beverages to their guests. Homeowners with room in their budgets may want to install wet bars where they can rinse mixers, glasses and other

Warming features Features that can keep homeowners and their guests warm after the sun sets include outdoor fireplaces and firepits. A 2016 survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects found that fireplaces and firepits were the most popular outdoor design element in 2016. Such features can provide a focal point in the backyard while also extending the outdoor living season into autumn and even early winter. Porch space Outdoor living spaces are often found in the backyard, but homeowners with bigger front yards than backyards may want to expand or open their porch spaces to create more space outside. Porch swings and rocking chairs provide a great place to relax, and porch spaces are covered, meaning homeowners can continue to enjoy time outside even when it begins to rain. Outdoor living spaces are growing in popularity. Homeowners who want to capitalize on this trend can do so in various ways.

Add pops of color to your kitchen If your kitchen is bland or boring, it’s time for an update. Consider those home projects that add pops of color and beauty, inspiring you to do your best culinary work. Here are three beautiful ways to add new hues to any kitchen: Natural color For a verdant, fragrant and useful pop of color, grow an herb garden right in your kitchen. From lavender to basil to chives, you can brighten your kitchen with natural colors, while adding some zest to salads, stews and more. Evaluate your kitchen for direct sunlight to determine the ideal size and shape of your garden, then get creative. Many people choose to create a hanging wall garden. Others prefer a tiered counter for the floor or pots for the countertop. Functional focal point Consider creating a focal point in your kitchen in an eye-catching color that adds vitality to the space. One great way to do this is by focusing on the heart of every kitchen — the range. Experts point out that black finishes in the kitchen have reemerged as a trending design element this year. So if you do choose black,

you may prefer to emphasize this selection with a gloss finish, which can add a layer of elegance, drama and sophistication to the kitchen. Standard colors are offered everywhere, but for something more unexpected, seek out brands that also offer customization in addition to classic choices like gloss black. Brilliant backsplash For a cohesive look, consider the focal point of your kitchen and build out from there with a beautiful backsplash. Backsplashes are stylishly

versatile and nearly any kitchen benefits aesthetically from the addition of one. Choices of materials include mosaic glass tiles, marble and metal — the possibilities are nearly endless – giving you a lot of flexibility in color and texture. The kitchen is the center of the home, where families make not only meals, but memories, too. Add beautiful bursts of color to the space to make it a place you love to spend time. Growing trends in today’s homes Although the heydays of the real estate boom of the early 2000s have not quite returned, things look positive. In the United States, 1,226,000 new homes were built in 2016, according to data from Consumer Reports. That was the most since 2007. Resales also have been more promising. The National Association of Realtors says the median number of days a home was on the market in April 2017 reached a new low of 29 days. However, low supply levels did stanch existing home sales somewhat. By mid-2017, the market was a seller’s market, with more people in the market for homes than properties available. But sales during that time were still outpacing sales figures from a year prior. Low interest rates on mortgages and more confi-

Houses are shrinking, selling faster and getting smarter upgrades according to industry statistics. dence in the economy has driven many people to make improvements to their existing homes. As is typical, the things homeowners are looking for in 2017 have evolved

from years past. The following are some trends that are helping to steer the real estate market further. Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily

Home improvement projects for fall to-do lists Homeowners know that maintaining a home can be a year-round job. No home is immune to wear and tear, and homeowners who want to protect their real estate investments should try to stay two steps ahead to ensure their homes do not succumb to the elements or become outdated and unappealing to prospective buyers. Fall has become a season that’s synonymous with home improvement, but homeowners need not wait until the leaves begin changing colors to start planning their next projects. The following are a few items homeowners can add to their fall home improvement to-do lists. Roof inspection Less precipitation tends to fall during the warmer months than during the late fall and winter. As a result, homeowners may not be aware of leaky roofs until autumn has come and gone. But waiting until winter to inspect the roof can prove disastrous, as weather conditions will not be conducive to inspection and increased precipitation may result in potentially costly damage. Leaky roofs can be easily identified by looking for water stains on interior ceilings. Once you see a stain, you can climb onto the roof to identify the location of the leak and fix it before winter rains and snowfall turn the problem into something much larger. Inspect your ceilings for signs of leaking after a strong rainfall, and then address any leaks immediately. Gutter cleaning While some homeowners prefer

to delay their gutter cleaning projects until late fall, those whose homes are surrounded by trees may need to schedule two such projects. Gutters clogged with leaves and other debris can cause serious roof damage, and that damage can extend all the way inside a home. In addition, clogged gutters make great nesting areas for insects or critters. Always stand on a ladder when cleaning gutters, wearing gloves to remove items by hand and dropping leaves and debris into a trash can below. Standing on the roof and leaning over gutters greatly increases your risk of injury. If the gutters are clear when you first examine them in early fall, you can wait until later in the season to give them a complete and thorough cleaning. Once you have finished clearing the gutters, you can use a hose to run water through them and the downspouts to confirm everything is functioning properly. Window and doorway inspection Before temperatures start dropping once again, homeowners will want to inspect their windows and doorways for leaks. Over time, cracks can develop around windows and doorways, and while such cracks are rarely noticeable when the weather outside is warm, they can be quite obvious and very costly if they remain unsealed come the start of winter. Cold air can enter a home through cracks around windows and doorways, and many homeowners who don’t suspect leaks may respond

increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new

construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space. Matte finishes: Stainless steel and luster have been popular for years. However, the next big thing is matte finishes on faucets, appliances and even in countertops. These less flashy finishes are prized for their warmth and elegance. While some high-end models with matte finishes have been available for several years, even less

Lawn care tips for fall Spring and summer may be the seasons most often associated with landscaping and lawn care, but tending to lawns and gardens is a year-round job. If lawn and garden responsibilities dip considerably in winter, then fall is the last significant chance before the new year that homeowners will have to address the landscaping around their homes. Fall lawn care differs from spring and summer lawn care, even if the warm temperatures of summer linger into autumn. Homeowners who want their lawns to thrive year-round can take advantage of the welcoming weather of fall to address any existing or potential issues. ► Keep mowing, but adjust how you mow. It’s important that homeowners continue to mow their lawns so long as grass is growing. But as fall transitions into winter, lower the blades so the grass is cut shorter while remaining mindful that no blade of grass should ever be trimmed by more than one-third. Lowering the blades will allow more sunlight to reach the grass in the months ahead. ► Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and

oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees. ► Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well. ► Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing. Fall lawn care provides a great reason to spend some time in the yard before the arrival of winter.

which are less expensive and easier to come by than straw. Use a few pieces of straw around the neck and hand areas of the scarecrow for visual effect. Tie off with twine and display your scarecrow. ► Bedding: Chicken owners can use fallen leaves as bedding in their chicken coops. Dry leaves also may create more comfortable and drier conditions for goats and other livestock. Goats may look to recently fallen leaves as a nutritious food source. Gather the leaves and let the goats munch before you further rake and compost the leaves. ► Decorations: Natural leaves can be used as decorations both inside and outside a home. String freshly fallen leaves together and wrap

them around a grapevine wreath for a rustic door decoration. Leaves can be placed in clear vases and put on display for a cheap way to showcase some autumn color. Preserve favorite leaves with a lamination machine or by sealing them between heated sheets of waxed paper. Cut out the leaf shapes and use for hanging window decorations. ► Recreation: Leaves have long been favorite toys for children, who eagerly await jumping into large piles of fallen leaves. Fill paper bags with leaves and draw a target on the front. Let kids test their skill aiming for the targets. Children can camouflage their clothing with leaves and masking tape and have a more intense session of hide and seek.

Leaves cascading down from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. However, colorful and awe-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from growing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But wet leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the lawn through the winter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons why so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall. The following are some creative ways to recycle leaves that fall from your trees in the weeks to come. ► Mulch: Shredded leaves can make for a great amendment to fertilizer for garden beds and even the lawn. Leaves lying on the grass can be mulched into small pieces with a mulching mower so they don’t choke the blades of grass. Leaves also can be broken down with a string trimmer, a leaf blower that has a vacuum function or a commercial shredder/ chipper. Add the shredded leaves to a compost pile or use them to fill container plants before adding regular potting soil. ► Insulation: Collect leaves to mound over delicate perennial plants and shrubs. The leaves will add more warmth to the soil and may help plants make it through harsh winters. Just remove the leaves slowly when spring arrives so that the soil underneath can get the sunlight and water it needs to thrive. Leave some leaves in the yard so that animals can use them as nesting material and line their dens for the winter. ► Stuffing: Create whimsical scarecrows as part of your autumn decoration scheme. Gather older clothes that you no longer use and stuff the sleeves of shirts and the legs of pants with leaves,

by turning up the thermostats in their homes. That can prove quite expensive over a full winter. Choose a windy autumn day to place a hand by windows and external doorways in your home to see if you can feel drafts. If you can, seal these cracks as soon as possible.

Patio cleanup Patios are popular hangouts during spring and summer, and that can result in a lot of wear and tear. Once you store patio furniture for the winter, inspect your entire patio to determine if it needs any refurbishing. While certain patio projects may be best left for spring, you can still clean any stained areas around the grill and look for cracks in

the sidewalk that need to be addressed. Preparing for fall home improvement projects ahead of time can help homeowners complete projects in a timely manner and ensures they won’t be forced to brave the winter elements when refurbishing their homes.

Remodeling? Buying? Building?

Reap garden rewards even in fall Gardening is a rewarding hobby that can help people relax and produce an enviable landscape. Many gardeners even find their meals are more fresh and flavorful when using items they grew themselves. While many gardeners do the bulk of their gardening in the spring and summer, certain plants thrive in cooler temperatures. That group includes autumn vegetables that are ripe for the picking when leaves begin falling. Fall gardens provide a reason to enjoy the oft-enjoyable autumn air. So many different vegetables come to life in the autumn, and they can make wonderful additions to the dinner table. Broccoli, kale, collards, spinach, squashes, artichokes, and beets are just some of the many autumn planting options you can try. Celery also is best in the fall, and its harvest continues through winter in temperate climates. By replacing crops that have been harvested through

the spring and summer with fall-friendly alternatives, you can keep your garden productive for most of the year. Begin the process by counting back 12 to 14 weeks from the expected first frost date for where you live. Begin seeds for your autumn plantings indoors, because summer heat and dryness are not the best conditions to nurture young seedlings. Enrich the soil with compost so that you can replenish the nutrients lost from the last crop harvested. Each region is different, so learn about when to put plants in the ground for your region. Many plants still need the sun and warmth of late summer to thrive and produce well into the fall. If you are unsure, consult with a local garden center, where you can learn about various aspects of autumn gardening. Onions, shallots and garlic are best planted mid-fall after the soil has cooled. Gradually introduce

seedlings to more sunlight and outdoor temperatures before they go in the ground, as they need time to adjust to the unfiltered sun. Be sure to thoroughly water the garden. Newly planted beds should be kept moist to germinate and so established plants can take root. In addition, consider a shade covering so that the soil doesn’t dry out or get baked in the sun. Mulch also can help retain moisture and keep the conditions ideal for your autumn vegetables to grow. Remember that moisture and cooler temperatures can attract garden pests, so you may need to employ some strategies to keep them under control. For example, insect barriers and all-natural baited traps can keep slugs and snails from munching on your autumn plants. Fall vegetable gardens can be worthy endeavors, yielding plenty of crops and providing the fun and fulfillment of gardening into the fall.

The most-used vegetable in cooking Onions are the unsung hero of the vegetable garden. They quietly grow, taking very little space, never crawling all over neighboring vegetables, and they store all winter. Plus they’re one of the most-used vegetables in cooking. What’s a hotdish without onions? Here’s the when, where, and how of digging onions: ► Onions are ready to dig when about 90 percent of the tops have fallen over naturally, withered, and dried from green to brown. It’s ok if some tops are still showing a little green, as long as they’ve fallen over and are shriveling and drying. ► Onions can remain in the ground after tops have shriveled, but they’re best dug before fall rains begin. ► In loose soil they can be pulled; a spading fork works well to lift onions in heavier soil. ► Many gardeners like to dig onions in the morning and let them

Growing Together BY DON KINZLER Columnist lay in the garden until early evening, then gather them up. Just be sure to pick them up before evening dew moistens them. Avoid leaving onions in intense sun to avoid sunburning the exteriors. ► With tops intact, onions are ready for the important “curing,” which is a vital step in helping them store as long as possible. ► Cure onions by spreading them in shallow containers in a dry, well-ventilated place with

temperatures of 75 to 85 degrees. Most garages work well. ► Allow onions to cure for 2 to 4 weeks until the outer scales are paperdry and the “neck” is tight, not squishy, when pressed. If onions aren’t cured properly, they rot quicker in storage. ► After curing, dry tops can be cut to about one inch. Keep all dry “wrapper” scales intact, as they enhance storage. ► Now the onions are ready for long-term stor-

age. Place in shallow containers or mesh bags in a very dry location. Storage temperature should be cool-dry, meaning between about 34 and 38 degrees F. If onions are stored above 40 degrees F. they will sprout quicker, decreasing the storage length. Enjoying homegrown onions all winter is a wonderful reward, compliments of a rather unassuming garden vegetable.

a way that won’t disrupt your view outside your window is by applying UV decals and UV liquid to your windows. Consider those from WindowAlert, which are proven to effectively alter the flight path of birds and prevent window strikes. While the ultraviolet coating will look like etched glass to

you, it will be quite visible to birds. For best application techniques, visit windowalert.com. ► Monitor the Cat: If you have cats that like to spend time outdoors, be sure to monitor them to prevent bird hunting. If possible, consider keeping birds safe by creating an outdoor area for your cat

to roam that’s enclosed. If you’re handy, you may try building this area yourself, but keep in mind, read-made structures are widely available, too. With a few simple steps, you can convert your garden and yard into a veritable safe haven for birds. (information provided StatePoint)

Millions of wild birds are killed each year flying into windows, including private homes. Birds face other dangers, too, in your yard, whether they are migrating or flying locally. Everyone, but especially those who enjoy having birds visit their yards and gardens, should take steps to make their homes a safer place for birds. “Birds are part of a healthy ecosystem. Turning your home into a refuge for birds is good for the environment, saves lives and can add beauty to your garden,” says Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert, a company that offers decals and UV Liquid that are highly visible to birds but barely noticed by people. Schock is offering three home projects you can do to help protect birds. ► Do some planting: Creating a bird-friendly yard does not have to be at odds with your desire to have a beautiful garden. Plant trees, shrubs and flowers that provide birds with the nourishment and shelter they need. The good news is that there are many beautiful varieties of bird-friendly vegetation. To be a good environmental steward, opt for species native to your region. ► Make Windows Visible: Preventing birds from striking your windows is easier than you may think because birds can see certain light frequencies that humans can’t. its new location as soon as possible. If you must store it, make sure you don’t suffocate the root ball, as roots must be kept damp or they will die and potentially cost you the tree. Transplanting a tree can add appeal to a property and help reinvigorate an unhealthy tree.

Year Rapids Enterprise Happy New at the Park From your friends

► Protect the root ball. When transplanting a tree, make sure the root ball does not dry out. If it does, the tree likely won’t thrive in its new location and all your hard work will have been for naught. Cover the root ball with damp burlap or canvas so it can retain more of the moisture it will need to adapt to its new location. ► Plant the tree sooner rather than later. While you can store a transplanted tree before you plant it elsewhere on your property, storing it for a long period of time increases the chances that the transplant will be unsuccessful. Ideally, you want to plant the tree in

professionals note that root pruning stimulates the growth of new small roots nearer to the tree’s trunk, and these newer roots will be dug up when the time comes to transplant the tree. Root pruning must be done well in advance of transplanting the tree. For example, if you hope to transplant the tree in the fall, then do your root pruning in the spring before new buds appear on the tree. Speak with your landscaper or a nearby garden center to determine the best way to prune your tree’s roots. ► Time your transplant correctly. Avoid transplanting trees when temperatures are colder

An alluring landscape can make a home that much more enjoyable. Many homeowners devote considerable time to their lawns and gardens, and that devotion can pay both instant and longterm dividends. A wellgroomed landscape can make it more enjoyable to relax in the yard, and such a property will be more attractive to prospective buyers when homeowners want to sell their homes. But even the most well-designed landscapes sometimes need some rearranging, and those changes may involve transplanting trees. Homeowners may transplant trees for various reasons. Some homeowners might be moving to a new home and want to take a favorite tree along with them, while some trees simply outgrow their existing space and need to be moved elsewhere on the property. Regardless of why trees need to be transplanted, homeowners can take several steps to ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible. ► Determine why the tree needs to be moved. Some trees that are not thriving in their existing location may not benefit from a transplant. For example, a tree with a pest infestation might need to be replaced rather than transplanted. Determining the reason behind a transplant can save you the trouble of transplanting that won’t benefit from the move. If a tree is not getting adequate sunlight in its present location, then transplanting it to a different location on your property with more exposure to sunlight might reinvigorate the tree. If soil is the problem, than transplanting the tree might prove ineffective unless you also test the soil where you plan to move the tree and adjust it so the tree can thrive. ► Prune the tree roots. Tiny roots that extend beyond the tree absorb water and nutrients, and such roots need to be pruned before transplanting a tree. Landscaping

and the ground is frozen. Transplanting before or after a thaw allows the transplanted roots time to develop. In addition, transplanting the day after you have watered the soil around the tree reduces the stress on the tree’s roots, making it easier to keep the root ball intact.

Fall Home Improvement

D8 September 30, 2017

Improve privacy and security at home with these simple tricks Living in close proximity to one;s neighbors has its benefits. But many homeowners would no doubt admit that privacy at home is a good thing. Whether homeowners are enjoying their yard or simply want their in-home activities to be less obvious to neighbors, their privacy is a yearround concern. If privacy is a concern, homeowners can take certain steps to ensure their homes stay or become the sanctuaries they were designed to be. Window treatments and frosting Windows allow natural light to enter a home, but windows also enable neighbors and others to see into a home. If thieves

are the ones looking inside, wide open windows present a security issue. Window treatments are an effective way to add privacy to a home. Closing curtains or blinds limits others’ ability to see inside the house. Switch to more opaque window treatments when using interior lighting more often, as gossamer draperies may still make it possible for outsiders to understand what’s going on inside the home if people and items are backlit. For those who do not want to compromise natural light, frosted windows can satisfy a desire for privacy. Windows can be purchased with frosting in place, and home

improvement retailers sell various products that can create a frosted look. Fencing and perimeter plantings Privet hedge, arborvitae or Italian cypress are fast-growing evergreens that provide pri-

vacy around a home for homeowners who do not want to install traditional fencing. These trees also provide a natural habitat for various yard animals. Layering various plants of different heights and textures also can create

a more natural and less imposing look. Fencing remains a viable option to create privacy and stop noise pollution. Privacy fences come in various materials, colors and sizes, enabling homeowners to choose styles that fit their landscapes. Pergolas and enclosed patios Homeowners who like to entertain outdoors may want to make their outdoor living spaces more private. Pergolas allow light to filter through but obstruct direct view of patio activity, especially when combined with some gauzy draperies hanging on the sides. An enclosed patio or three-season room can be a worthwhile

addition for homeowners who like to enjoy the great outdoors without being in the elements or on display for neighbors. Structures vary from screened-in porches to greenhouses to removable gazebos. Potted plants or trailing vines can soften the structural edges and help the privacy devices blend in with the natural surroundings. Personal tactics Homeowners who do not want their neighbors or others knowing what they’re up to in their free time can limit what they share through photos and descriptions on social media. Doing so also cuts down on neighbors’ curiosity.

How to compost at home Many homeowners spend substantial amounts of time and money tending to their lawns. A lush lawn can be a point of pride for homeowners, and well-maintained landscapes also have a positive effect on property value. Homeowners who want to take care of their lawns and gardens in an eco-friendly way may want to consider composting. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, food scraps and lawn waste make up about 20 to 30 percent of what we throw away each year. Composting such waste can enrich the soil in homeowners’ yards while also reducing the size of local landfills,

where food scraps and lawn waste contribute to the production of methane, a potent and harmful greenhouse gas. Composting is relatively simple and serves as a cost-effective way to enrich soil and suppress plant diseases and pest infestations. Homeowners who want to try their hand at composting can consider the following advice from the EPA. ► Purchase the right tools. Composting is not expensive, but you will need a few tools to help maintain your compost pile. A pitchfork or square-point shovel will be necessary so you can periodically mix or turn the compost. In addition, a water hose with a spray

head can help maintain the pile. ► Choose the right spot. A compost pile or bin should be placed in

a shady area close to a water source. Shade will help ensure the pile does not dry out too quickly, especially for those

homeowners who live in warmer climates. Those who live in colder regions may want to locate their piles in spots that get some sun exposure to trap some solar heat in their piles. Build the pile over lawn or soil instead of over surfaces like asphalt or concrete. ► Add materials as you collect them. The EPA notes that composting requires three basic ingredients: water, brown materials and green materials. Brown materials include dead branches, leaves and twigs, while greens include grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps, and coffee grounds. Chop larger materials as necessary, adding both brown and

green materials as you collect them and watering dry materials as necessary. ► Bury fruit and vegetable waste. When adding fruit and vegetable waste, bury it beneath 10 inches of compost material. You can do this by mixing your pile with your pitchfork or shovel. If necessary, cover the top of your compost pile with a tarp so the pile can retain moisture. Compost may take as long as two years before it’s usable, but when materials are dark and rich in color, they’re ready to be spread.
