Submitted photos Jill and Kurt Dickinson moved into their new one-level home last fall. Kurt will finish the landscaping this spring. “That’s his favorite thing to do,” Jill said. “We built the house so he could landscape.”

ill and Kurt Dickinson are graduates of Park Rapids Area High School, 1982 and 1978, respectively. The couple has been married for 31 years. “31 years and four kids,” Jill said. They recently built a one-level, slab-on-grade home, roughly 2,100 square feet on 27 wooded acres in Park Rapids. They broke ground in August 2018 and moved in October 2019. “It’s our dream home, retirement style,” Kurt said. “It’s on some land we inherited.” It took about a month for the Dickinsons to sketch the house design, utilizing Kurt’s construction experience. “We had the square footage and knew what we wanted it to look like,” he said. Construction was definitely a family affair.

The kitchen island is a center for conversation, dining and entertainment. The aqua ceramic tiles of the backsplash add a splash of color.

The dining room overlooks the Dickinson’s wooded property.

This set of dishes belonged to Kurt’s mother.

Tretbar Construction of Osage was the general contractor. Andy Tretbar is Kurt’s cousin. Plumbing was completed by another cousin. As for working with family members on the construction, Kurt quipped, “I’m older, so they listened.” “They are a good bunch of young men,” he said. “It was fun,” Jill said. The Dickinsons opted for LP Smartside, a lap siding that combines the rich, grain texture of traditional cedar siding with

the advanced performance of treated, engineered wood. “Pretty much, you put it on, you’re done for years. No painting, no staining, no nothing. It’s totally waterproof, sunproof, all of it,” Kurt said. “It’s wood grained with lots of color choices. It looks like wood siding.” They had seen the product on other homes locally. A 10-by-30-foot covered porch will be ideal for summer grilling, flower pots and container gardening.

A concrete walkway will surround two-thirds of the home when completed this spring. The open floor plan features a 12-foot, vaulted ceiling in the kitchen, living room and dining room area. It’s ideal for entertaining, where everyone in the space can participate in the conversation, they said. Most of the ceilings are tongue-in-groove basswood, while most of the walls are rustic hickory. Kurt explained that basswood “is light-colored and has a lot of character.” They both love hickory and “went kind of hogwild” with it, he added. They describe their decorating style as “uncluttered,” particularly since they enjoy the hickory so much. Jill said they are slowly adding decor here and there. “We’ve just been enjoying making it ours.” Built-in kitchen appliances are tucked in with stained hickory cabinets. “We have a huge island,” Kurt said of the 6-by-10-foot centerpiece. “We have a big, walk-in pantry by the kitchen,” he added. A nine-foot, gas fireplace dominates the living room, soaring to the ceiling. Featuring sawed rock, it was crafted by Burlingame Masonry, Kurt’s cousin. “He’s an artist,” Kurt said. A cozy source of heat, Jill said, “It’s nice just being able to push a button without cutting wood.” “Our patio doors and living room windows overlook our property, so we see the wildlife and the woods,” she said of the forested view, mostly oaks. They chose recessed lighting for the kitchen and living room. Vinyl flooring covers two-thirds of the house, while one-third is ceramic tile, mostly in the bathrooms. A sturdy floor that could handle wear and tear was a necessity, Jill said. “We have 200-pound dogs,” Kurt noted of the couple’s two black Labradors. In addition to the master bedroom, master bath and walk-in closet, there are two guest bedrooms and a full bath. All of the bedrooms have ceiling fans. A guesthouse on the property holds another bedroom and bath. The Dickinsons describe the extra building as both “man cave” and “she shed.” “We all use it,” Kurt explained. Originally, it was Kurt’s father’s house for about 15 years. “It’s our play area, so we have a pool table and a dart board,” Jill said of the converted space. Elk and deer mounts decorate the 11-foot ceiling. Jill said she loves having an attached, twocar garage. “We can walk out in our garage barefooted,” Kurt added. Tongue-and-groove extends into the garage, “so it actually looks like part of the house,” Jill said. Even though retirement is about a decade away, they incorporated wide doors into the design should they need a wheelchair or walker in the future.

SO YOU WANT TO BUY your first home? BY EMMA VATNSDAL

L

Forum News Service

ife after college can be a weird time, both in your personal life and in your financial life. You’ve moved out of the dorms, you’ve survived crappy apartment after crappy apartment, you have the job of your dreams and are finally raking in that sweet, sweet cash money and you’re just ready to have somewhere you can call your own — or at the very least, somewhere you can paint the walls without losing your deposit. It’s about time to start looking for your first home. But take it from someone who knows (or someones who know), there really is a lot to figure out before you step into the world of home ownership. Keely Schlichting, vice president and mortgage production manager

with Bell Bank Mortgage, says there’s nothing wrong with shopping around for a lender. And with almost 20 years of experience in real estate lending, she knows what she’s talking about. “(At Bell), we know we might not be the best for everybody,” she says. “Or we might be. It all depends on who you mesh with. Talk to two or three lenders, get a feel for who you think is going to be the best fit.” Schlichting suggests asking friends or co-workers who’ve gone through the process which lender they went through and take the time to compare and get a couple of options. “It’s sort of like ‘interviewing’ your lender,” Schlichting says. But buying a home is more than just finding the perfect lender. Here are a few other things to do when buying your first home.

FINANCIAL HOMEWORK

Before you buy your first home, it’s important to work on building a good credit history. Paying your bills and paying them on time will help make you look good to lenders. The better your credit score, the more likely you’ll qualify for your perfect loan program. Your qualification depends on factors like credit score, debt-to-income ratio and assets. Your financial homework should also be a time when you decide how much you can afford and create a budget. How much can you pay each

10

month for a mortgage? After all the bills are paid, do you still have enough money left over for necessities? Emergencies? Fun?

Buying a house can give you many benefits, but homeowners need to be ready for all responsibilities and costs that come with it.

MEET WITH A LENDER

GOLDEN TICKET

After you apply for a loan, it’s time to get approved. The preapproval letter is sort of like the golden ticket to finding your chocolate factory (or home). It tells you exactly what you will be able to borrow, which helps to figure out what homes you should and shouldn’t be looking at. Most real estate agents will encourage homebuyers not to look at homes until they figure out what they can afford. That way, they can avoid falling in love with something above their price range.

CHILL OUT, BRO

Once you’ve applied for your loan, chill out. Keep your job, don’t buy a car, don’t open a credit card.

SHOPPING TIME!

Now comes the fun part: shopping!

Nathan Larson, a buying agent with Park Co. Realtors in Fargo, says there are many things to think about when looking for your first home. “Take a look at different neighborhoods to see if you’re going to like living there,” Larson says. “Research schools, and look at houses in those districts you might be interested in.” Also, be prepared to settle on a few things. “Don’t expect your first home to be perfect,” Larson says. “Your first home is your down payment on your dream home.” Building equity through your first starter home is the way to get into that big two-story, farmhouse-style home with a wraparound porch that I’ve — ope, I mean YOU’VE — always dreamed of.

Just keep your finances steady from preapproval to closing. Lenders pull credit reports at preapproval to make sure things check out and again at closing, just to make sure nothing has changed. New loans or credit card accounts on your credit report can jeopardize the closing and final loan approval. Instead, pay down any existing loans to under 30 percent of your available credit limit and pay your bills on time every month. Buying a home is all about financial responsibility. It’s sort of like when you were a kid and your parents got you a goldfish to take care of before getting you that puppy.

Once you find the lender that’s right for you, it’s time to figure out what you may qualify for. Mortgage lenders will meet with you and ask questions to try to get a feel for what you’re hoping for in terms of payments. There are several options for loans — all of which require certain things must be met before qualifying. They’ll discuss financial goals, assets you have set aside for the purchase and even the type of home you are looking for. All of this is necessary to figure out exactly what loan type will best fit your needs.

12

Once you’ve found a home you like in a great neighborhood, make an offer. Your Realtor can help guide you through appropriate offers to make sure you’re getting the best deal possible.

LOCK ‘ER IN — IT’S CLOSING DAY

Once your offer is accepted, your lender will work with you to lock in interest rates, sign disclosure documents and submit all of it for final loan approval. Once your final loan is approved, it’s closing day! Be sure to have all funds lined up for the closing, review documents to make sure there are no errors and everything meets your expectations and do some hand stretches. You’re going to be signing your name a lot. All that’s left is to grab your keys and head home. Readers can reach reporter Emma Vatnsdal at 701-241-5517.

GARDENING with a purpose BY KEITH MANLOVE Intern, University of Minnesota Master Gardener

M

innesota has a lot of lakes, and we Minnesotans sure know how to use them. Minnesota has, per capita, both the highest number of registered boats and fishing licenses. Minnesota has more miles of shoreline than California, Florida and Hawaii combined! We even brag about our many lakes on our state’s license plates. By pretty much any measure, Minnesotans enjoy their lakes, but with that enjoyment comes the responsibility for caring for them. What does responsible stewardship mean and what can be done to protect one of Minnesota’s most precious resources? The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has determined that over 40 percent of Minnesota lakes are listed as impaired with one or more pollutants.

One of the top contributors to surface water pollution is runoff from rainfall and snowmelt. Fortunately, this is something that individual landowners can actually do something about. We all live in a watershed. A watershed is an area of land in which all the precipitation falling within it flows to a river, lake, stream or wetland. Most of the Park Rapids area is part of the Upper Mississippi River Watershed, which means that water that runs off from your property, your own private watershed, flows into a lake or river that eventually flows into the Mississippi.

GARDENS REDUCE RUNOFF

So the question is, how do we minimize runoff from our watersheds? Allow me to suggest the concept of gardening with a purpose. And in this case, the purpose is using gardens to reduce the amount of runoff.

14

If we consider an undeveloped lot full of native plants, shrubs and trees to be a “garden,” which I do, then the following study by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is germaine. The Wisconsin DNR calculated runoff volume from an undeveloped shoreland lot compared to a large lake home (approximately 4,000 square feet of impervious surfaces) on a lot entirely converted to lawn. They found the following:  a 500 percent increase in runoff volume,  a 700 percent increase in phosphorus washing into the lake, and  a 900 percent increase in sediment flowing to the lake on the large home lot. While this study was looking specifically at the impacts of development on lakeshore lots, the underlying premise applies to all lots: Natural areas have less runoff than developed areas.

The first step in managing your own personal watershed is knowing how water flows across it. And the best way to do that is to look outside your window, or better yet go outside and walk around, during a rain. Where is water collecting? Where is it flowing from and to? Those areas are prime locations for putting in a natural garden.

HOW TO PLANT A ‘NATURAL GARDEN’

Now you may be asking, what exactly is a “natural garden” and what kind of plants should I include in it? The first question, as it is for all gardens, is open to your own artistic interpretation. A natural garden can range from a carefully constructed rain garden with an excavated depression to a simple swath of native grasses and flowers. Every garden is unique and depends on your specific sun and soil conditions. I would strongly urge you to consider natives in your natural garden.

They are tough, low maintenance, require fewer chemicals, are drought resistant and evolved over time to thrive in the conditions you will be putting them in. Finding out what plants are native to your area can be accomplished by driving around and looking at the woods and ditches that would mimic your specific sun/shade situation. Another option would be to go to the National Wildlife Federation’s website (www.nwf. org/NativePlantFinder), where they have a Native Plant Finder tool. Just enter your zip code and it will bring up several pages of plants that are native to your area as well as the list of pollinators for which they serve as hosts plants. Gardening with a purpose may help to expand your definition of what constitutes a garden and where that garden is located. Gardening with a purpose can open up an exciting new list of plants for your gardening palette and at the same time help sustain native wildlife. At the end of the day, gardening with a purpose can help preserve the lakes and rivers that we all love.

THE BASICS OF kitchen cabinet refacing H

omeowners who want to give their kitchens a brand-new look without the expense or the hassle of a full-scale renovation often gravitate toward kitchen cabinet refacing. Cabinet refacing is less expensive and more eco-friendly than a full replacement of existing cabinets, and experts estimate refacing costs roughly two-thirds less than a complete cabinet renovation. Refacing involves replacing the doors and drawer fronts of existing cabinets during which the cabinet boxes are veneered to match the wood color chosen for the refacing, while the structure and layout of the cabinets remains unchanged. Essentially, the kitchen footprint will remain the same as it was before the refinishing took place. Kitchens are popular rooms in the home, and much of the renovation investment made in the kitchen can be recuperated at resale. Homeowners looking to put their homes up for sale soon may find cabinet refacing is beneficial, as it is a relatively quick renovation that can reap big rewards. Homeowners have options when refacing their cabinets. While some projects, such as stripping off old paint and repainting, can be a do-it-yourself project, refacing cabinets may be best left to the professionals. Veneer work, which is often part of cabinet refacing, is not a skill one can learn overnight, and it often requires the hand of a professional carpenter. “Paint is always a choice, and easy for people to do it themselves,” said Ramona Howey, a color technician in the paint department at Cwikla Ace Hardware. “Once they prep the surface, they can use ACE brand cabinet-door and trim paint. It comes in semi-gloss, which is easy to wash and dries to a hard finish. It makes it so the doors won’t stick when it’s humid out, and it’s selfleveling. So, that’s an easy one for people to it themselves.” Also, Howey said, Magnolia Homes sells semi-gloss latex cabinet paint. “We also carry chalk paint.

Metro Service photo Cabinet refacing can transform the look of a kitchen, and such a project costs considerably less than complete cabinet replacement.

Some people like to use that on their cupboards. It’s a little more expensive route to go, but people like it because you don’t need to prime and sand; you can just clean them real good and then apply the paint.” She advised using a good degreaser first. Many cabinets can be resurfaced successfully. Older cabinets are prime candidates, as they often are more sturdy than newer cabinets. In general, cabinets can be refaced as long as their substructures are sound. In addition to providing a new look for the kitchen, cabinet refacing is an eco-friendly project. By not demolishing existing cabinetry, homeowners are preventing old materials from ending up in landfills while saving trees from being cut down to construct new cabinets. Refacing also reduces the amount of chemical products used in the building of new cabinets, including stains, adhesives and chemically treated wood. “There’s been a lot of people refinishing their cupboards instead of buying new ones,” said Howey. “A lot of them have been happy with the results.”

16

She noted that darker colors take longer to dry. “Most people are choosing whites and off-whites,” she said. Homeowners can choose among wood, veneer, metal and even glass doors as replacements in the kitchen. Coupling cabinet refacing with replacement of old appliances can completely transform the appearance of the kitchen in relatively little time. Many refacing projects go as follows. ▶ Measurements are taken and technical drawings are made so that new cabinet materials can be manufactured to the kitchen’s exact specifications. ▶ Homeowners choose the type of finish they prefer for the new cabinetry. ▶ Manufacturing takes place, and homeowners will schedule a time when the work will commence. ▶ Existing doors and drawer fronts will be removed and recycled or disposed of. ▶ If cabinet frames and boxes need to be repaired in any way, some refacing companies will take care of this. ▶ Cabinet boxes and frames are covered in a matching veneer or plastic laminate.

▶ The new doors and drawer fronts are installed, as are new handles, pulls and moldings to complete the look. Many companies specialize in cabinet refacing. Homeowners should request estimates from potential candidates and review workmanship prior to hiring a particular company. Mike Landquist, owner of Landquist Rustic and Log Furniture, said he does kitchen cabinet refacing, “where the boxes are still good, but they just want new doors and drawer faces.” “I deal with the rustic, up-north look,” he said. “I just use roughsawed, reclaimed lumber or I use slab log faces on them.” For wood veneer cabinet facings that have a cleaner, more conventional and polished look, Landquist recommends going to Jerry Eischens Cabinetry in Park Rapids, Leeseberg Cabinets on County 4, or SWI and Co. in Osage. Cabinet refacing is often a fast, relatively inexpensive renovation project. It can improve the appearance and functionality of a kitchen in a small amount of time, while also improving the value of a home.

BRINGING the indoors out C

reating outdoor living areas that are environmentally friendly is a trend this season. When natural elements are incorporated into the outdoor living space, people feel more connected and calm. Backyard grills are still popular, but outdoor ovens, fireplaces and wine coolers are also trending making the entire dining experience an outdoor one. Natural elements are combined with constructed elements to create a harmonious space. A plant wall or raised garden bed can integrate greenery and pops of color. Using natural materials, like wood and stone to complement the surrounding environment adds to the feeling of being out in nature even while enjoying a meal from an outdoor oven with a glass of wine from the outdoor bar. Homeowners also have many options when it comes to the design and price of their outdoor kitchen. Some may lean toward a grill island, adding prep and storage space, while others might create a full-on outdoor kitchen with grill,

smoker, refrigerator, sink, seating area and more.

walls made with brick or wood is also popular.”

TRENDS IN THE NORTHWOODS

SLEEK, MODERN DESIGN

Dawn Johnson works in decorating and sales at Nature’s Accents Decorating Center in Park Rapids. She said trends in this region often differ from trends in other areas of the country. “We love the outdoors up here, that’s for sure,” she said. “Out here, it’s a different type of decorating – more woodsy and rustic, so you’ll see more of that with the wood look floors. Outdoor decorating is pretty popular with all the lake homes. People are putting fireplaces outside. Some are natural gas, but most people still prefer to burn wood.” She said indoor-outdoor tiles in bold colors are popular, along with softer browns and greens found in nature. “A lot of people are having vinyl planking put in their screened-in porches instead of plain wood floors,” she said. “It’s water proof and scratch proof, so it’s easy to maintain. Adding accent

While it may seem contrary to the more organic approach of design, the contemporary trend toward sleek, modular furniture can enhance outdoor living space. Modular, sectional pieces with clean lines and streamlined design can be arranged and rearranged to accommodate any natural elements in the space or to handle different numbers of guests when entertaining. The minimalist approach to furnishings also allows the natural elements in the surroundings to take center stage.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACES

Whether enhancing a home in an urban area with limited green space or optimize outdoor living, get creative by trying some of these ideas: ▶ Add vertical planters; ▶ Hang hammocks for lounging; ▶ Create built-in seating; ▶ Build raised garden beds.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 2020

BrandPoint Media photos Outdoor decorating at lake homes, like a wood-burning outdoor fireplace, are increasingly popular.

Here’s where some of that modular seating can come in handy, too. Some urban homes make good use of their front porches and yards, instead, which invites more neighborhood engagement and a feeling of community.

ENTERTAINING BOTH NIGHT AND DAY

Regardless of the time of day, relaxing comfortably in an outdoor sanctuary is possible, thanks to modern technology and the latest outdoor installations: ▶ LED lighting is installed in a variety of ways. Use strips of light, spotlights or multiple colors to add flair at night. ▶ In the harsh sunlight, large umbrellas and movable shade walls or screens can keep the outdoor space cool and comfortable. ▶ For cooler climates, an outdoor fireplace provides heat and light for cozy evenings in the yard. Whether it’s a vision for a patio or a dream of an elaborate outdoor living space, these ideas can help create an oasis where family and friends can gather.

BrandPoint Media photo Outdoor kitchens are catching on in popularity.

OUTDOOR LIVING trends for 2020 T

he appeal of enjoying time out in the fresh air has never been higher, with homeowners across the country investing more time and money than ever before into their outdoor spaces. Landscape Accents of Park Rapids works on many outdoor projects. Owner Justin Fischer said, while some of the trends below are popular here in northern Minnesota, others haven’t caught on yet. Based on insights from decking contractors, retailers and home design experts, these top five design trends are predicted to influence outdoor living in the new decade nationwide.

MIXED MATERIALS

2020 is the year to mix it up. Add visual interest to an outdoor space by juxtaposing materials, such as concrete and composite,

space because it’s where people gather and memories are made. “Outdoor kitchens are catching on up here, too. We haven’t seen a lot of them yet, though,” Fischer said. “Outdoor rooms are starting to be popular, more with the seasonal residents who have more expendable income than people who live here year ‘round. The most popular is retaining wall block and natural stone.”

wicker and aluminum, copper and stone. Integrate nature-inspired materials that maintain cohesion with the natural surroundings, and infuse color and pattern with pillows, cushions, furnishings and decorative accents.

SIZZLING KITCHENS

As the foodie phenomenon continues to thrive, outdoor kitchens will continue to evolve. Picture fully appointed culinary centers complete with specialty appliances such as smokers, pizza ovens and integrated refrigerated storage – all housed in stylish allweather cabinetry. Capturing this trend is stainless steel cabinetry solutions in color and style options that allow homeowners to create functional spaces that rival interior spaces. A well-designed and well-appointed kitchen becomes the heart of any

INDUSTRIAL INSPIRATION

There is a growing shift toward sleek, contemporary designs and materials for interior and exterior spaces as homeowners are increasingly finding inspiration in commercial settings, like hotels and restaurants. Outdoors, this trend is manifesting in more industrial aluminum railing styles with sleek profiles and contemporary rod, mesh or glass inserts designed to

20

optimize sightlines and deliver a modern flair.

FIRE AND WATER

Fire and water are all the rage right now for outdoor spaces. These elements not only take a space to the next level, they connect it to the natural surroundings. Fire pots can be positioned almost anywhere to create a cozy gathering spot – or combined in a series to provide an ambient boundary for larger outdoor areas. For even greater visual impact, a fire table can serve as a focal point and elevate the luxury and comfort of an outdoor space. “Hands down a patio area with a circular fire pit and a metal ring insert is the most popular here,” he said. “We put in a ton of them every year. People also like a simple rock ring fire pit.”

JUMP FROM PAGE 20 Most people prefer to burn wood in their fire pits, although a few customers have expressed interest in gas ones. “Here, we’re not limited by the restrictions on open fire pits like they are in the Metro area,” he said. “And on lake lots, you don’t have to worry about the smoke bothering the neighbors.” Likewise, the soothing sound of trickling water from integrated spillways, bowls or other features can instantly conjure calm and set a relaxed tone and atmosphere.

BONUS SPACE

If you have a raised deck, there is undoubtedly some open space underneath. While, historically, this space has been used for storage, the design trend for 2020 is to turn it into bonus living space by installing a deck drainage system. The space under the deck can then be outfitted with everything from furniture and accessories to lighting fixtures, ceiling fans and entertainment components. Fischer said gutter systems that collect water so the space under decks can be used as a patio area are very popular.

HOW TO CONTROL common spring pests J

ust when winter thaws out and people are anxious to enjoy the blooming flowers and luscious lawns of spring, pesky pests can appear and impact comfort levels and safety. Many pests resume their levels of activity as spring draws closer and temperatures warm up. The presence of these insects and rodents may cause problems in and around a home, which makes it essential to recognize them and avoid issues. The following are some of the more common spring pests and how to remedy infestations.

Metro Service photo Ants are a nuisance that become more active as the weather warms.

PAVEMENT ANTS

Pavement ants are some of the most common pests residents encounter inside and outside of their homes. These ants are light brown to black with appendages that are lighter than the rest of their bodies. Small in stature, pavement ants have parallel lines on their heads and thorax, according to a pest extermination company. Although pavement ants nest outdoors, they can enter homes through small crevices in search of food scraps. Their large colonies may not disappear until treatment is introduced. Keep foods in tightly sealed containers, clear counters and floors of crumbs, and address water sources, such as leaks. Pesticides may be needed in extreme conditions.

FLEAS Fleas are tiny, jumping, biting pests that must find a host upon which to live. As ectoparasites, they feed on blood while living on the body of living hosts. Pets can bring fleas inside the yard and home in warm weather. According to the University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program, flea larvae develop more quickly at

Although wasps help control other insect populations, their painful stings and potentially aggressive nature can make them challenging to have around a home. If a nest is found, hire a professional to remove it.

higher temperatures. At normal room temperatures, the entire life cycle of a flea is about 18 days. Several flea control products are available to control fleas on cats and dogs. There also may be powders and sprays to alleviate flea infestations in the home. Vacuuming is also very effective in killing larvae in the carpet and at picking up adults.

An errant wasp, hornet or yellow jacket may have survived winter and ridden out the colder temperatures within a home. Once the weather warms, queens will begin to look for places to lay eggs and establish colonies. Treating areas where wasps are seen entering and leaving the home is key. Seal holes as soon as possible.

24

Many spiders are not harmful enough to humans and pets to be much of a problem. In fact, spiders can be helpful to have around to control the populations of other insects. Still, many homeowners would prefer these web-slinging friends remain outdoors. Therefore, sealing cracks in a home’s foundation and repairing small openings around windows and doors can help keep spiders out. Also, alleviating moisture issues in basements, garages or attics may keep out other bugs that would be prey to spiders. Homeowners can take the steps necessary to cut down on pests in and around their homes.

BOLD COLORS add vitality to homes B

old hues add a splash of color to rooms that can use a lift and are also a way to easily brighten up outdoor living spaces. Ramona Howey at Cwikla ACE Hardware in Park Rapids has been mixing paint for 11 years. She said color trends change every few years. “We were more into the bold colors and accent walls indoors a couple of years ago,” she said. “Gray is popular for indoor walls now, but bold colors are still popular outdoors. People can have fun with them by having a bunch of brightly colored chairs.” Howey said most people pick from existing colors, but they get occasional requests to match colors as well. In spite of the trends, some homeowners are still choosing to incorporate bold colors in their homes. By embracing bold painting and decorating styles, homeowners can use fresh color palettes to make rooms more inviting and colorful. These popular color combinations can provide inspiration.

Metro Service photo While some colors may be synonymous with certain times of year, homeowners can employ bold colors in their homes all year long. Shades of pink and green complement each other nicely, for example.

GREEN AND PINK

Colors on opposite ends of the color wheel will always complement each other. Green paired with pink calls to mind the great outdoors. These hues can add a touch of floral spring sunshine even when that season has long since passed. Opt for a deep green and a carnation pink for maximum impact. And don’t forget a vase full of fresh blooms as the finishing factor.

LAVENDER AND DEEP BLUE

Analogous colors are three colors that sit side-by-side on the color wheel and share a common denominator in terms of shade. Lavender, blue and an orchid pink are examples of such hues. This cool, regal combination can add femininity to a bedroom or even drama to another space in the house. If painting the walls dark blue or lavender seems scary, opt for a neutral shade on walls and then dress up the space with inky and violet accents.

TURQUOISE AND BRICK RED Enhance the “wow” factor with these bold colors. Although they are striking, when they work together, they also can impart a soothing feel, particularly since they are often inspired by Asian influences. Feature a light turquoise sofa with red throw pillows. Or dress up meals

with a red tablecloth on the dining table and turquoise, white and red, patterned place mats.

GRAY AND YELLOW

26

Yellow is a pick-me-up color any time of the year, but, when combined with a gray, it’s toned down to be soothing instead of startling. This color combination is popular in kitchens, nurseries and entryways.

Have fun in the kitchen with mottled gray stone countertops, pale yellow walls and canary curtains. Color can affect mood and transform spaces with just a small investment of time and money. Homeowners can experiment with color palettes so rooms remain vibrant all year long.

EASY PROJECTS that instantly transform a bathroom U pdating the bathroom with the latest trends is something many homeowners desire, but the thought of a complete remodel can be overwhelming. Fortunately, there are many easy and accessible upgrades that you can make that will transform your bathroom and add value to your home.

UPDATE AN EXISTING VANITY

If you have a dated vanity that has good bones, there’s no need to replace it. You can take charge with some DIY elbow grease and update it instead. For example, if you have a honey oak vanity that you want to update to a more current style, start by removing all hardware and cover to protect floors and vanity top. Then sand the surface and paint with primer so it’s ready for your choice of color and finishes. Next, paint the entire vanity in the color of your choice. Gray vanities are currently popular and will project a contemporary feeling while white is timeless

Complete the upgrade with new hardware and you’ll have an entirely new look in your bathroom.

and conveys cleanliness. Another trend is to feature color on the bathroom vanity, such as blue or green, which adds visual interest to the space. Depending on your preference you might finish with a gloss for a modern look or distress the edges for a farmhouse style.

UPGRADE FLOORING FOR CUSTOM STYLE It’s simple to put a fresh coat of paint on the ceiling so when you look up, your bathroom appears clean and updated.

But what about when you look down? If the floors have seen better days, it’s time to replace them. You may long for marble tile or exotic wood floors, but these projects are expensive and can be time-consuming. Luckily, there are many affordable modern vinyl options that are humidity safe, slip resistant and durable, making them ideal for use in the bathroom. Today’s vinyl has come a long way from the cheap-looking sheets from decades ago. With a little research you can discover modern vinyl options made to look like myriad materials including mosaic tile, natural stone, wood planks and more. Often you can use the existing floor as the sub-floor, so there’s no need to remove it. Always research the manufacturer’s recommendations, but typically modern vinyl flooring is easy to install with features that snap together and are simple to cut to size.
