Events & Festivals RELAY FOR LIFE
Friday, June 7, 2019 The 25th annual Relay for Life Hubbard County, an American Cancer Society event, will be held 4-9 p.m. at the Park Rapids Area High School. Relay for Life is a way for people whose lives have been touched by cancer to take action. It is a time to honor cancer survivors, remember lost loved ones, and raise funds for research, patient care and education/prevention programs. Luminaria can be purchased before and during the event and displayed as a symbol of hope for those struggling with cancer and in remembrance of those who have lost the battle. Luminarias may be
decorated personally. Everyone is invited to attend and bring family to share an indoor picnic, games and activities in a carnival-like atmosphere. Locally produced burgers, fries, desserts and more will be on sale, and an “Evening of Hope” program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Cancer survivors will be recognized, caregivers thanked, and loved ones remembered. You don’t have to be on a team, nor do you need to have had cancer, to participate in the evening’s fun, connect with friends and experience a deeply moving program of hope.
NEVIS SITES AND BITES
Sunday, June 9, 2019 The fourth annual Sites & Bites event will showcase dining, arts and entertainment in Nevis from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 9. Visitors are invited to eat, shop and jive to a variety of live music. Admission to the event is $3 or three food shelf items. At the Nevis Chamber building, participants will be given a “passport” to be stamped at each location they visit. Once filled, return stamped passports to the food shelf booth to be entered in a drawing for door prizes. After grabbing a bite to eat, head to Shenanigan’s
stage under the water tower to hear the musical performances. The musical duo Rob & Jill will play from 1-2:15 p.m., followed by Tate McLane from 2:45-4 p.m. and The Brothers Burn Mountain from 4:30-6 p.m. There will also be music at the Iron Horse. Proceeds from the event benefit the Akeley/Nevis Food Shelf, located in downtown Akeley. Those attending the festival are invited to add a creative stroke to the community canvas, a group painting which will be auctioned off during the concert.

ANGLERS CATCH GREAT MEMORIES ON AREA LAKES The Park Rapids area and its abundance of lakes provide ample opportunity for the fishing enthusiast. Whether you’re looking for fish simply for fun and the relaxation of dropping a line on a beautiful, summer day or wanting to take part in a competitive tournament, you’re sure to find what you want in Hubbard County. Once the fishing opener takes place in May, the lakes come alive as walleye anglers join those already out angling for panfish. Walleyes, bluegills, crappies, sunfish, rock bass and perch, even trout, swim in these waters, so take your pick.
Whether you catch off the dock, from shore or pull fish into a boat, it’s all about creating memories in lakes and pines area. Summer fishing can be as simple as hanging out on the dock and snapping a photo with a big catch. Fishing is a family sport – for the youngster with his or her first rod and reel, the avid angler or an entire family on vacation visiting one of the many lakes and resorts. Check in at one of the local bait shops for tips on hot spots, best bait and lures, fishing style and time of day for whichever lake you’re heading out to fish.

The park serves as the trailhead to the ever-popular Heartland Trail. The ride is non-competitive, geared to all ages, with families welcome to participate. Bikers from across the region are invited to pedal in for the fun.

Itasca State Park
ITASCA STATE PARK IS JEWEL OF MINNESOTA Minnesota’s oldest state park is 128 years old. Itasca State Park was established on April 20, 1891 to preserve the old growth pine trees that were in danger of being logged. More than half a million people visit Itasca State Park every year to see the giant pines and wade across the headwaters of the Mississippi River State Water Trail. Park Rapids is the undisputed Gateway to Itasca State Park and the south entrance is a 22-mile drive from Park Rapids north on Hwy. 71. The east entrance is only a couple miles farther north of the south entrance, and then another mile or so west
on Hwy. 200 – you’ll find it easily at the junction of Hwy. 71 and Hwy. 200. On the drive north from Park Rapids on Hwy. 71 visitors can find several quaint
shops and recreation areas to stop at along the way. Also, some fabulous restaurants are located just off of Hwy. 71 that are sure to satisfy any appetite.
Itasca State Park encompasses Lake Itasca, the official source of the Mississippi River, and a scenic area of northern Minnesota that has remained relatively unchanged from its natural state. Today, the park totals more than 32,000 acres and includes more than 100 lakes. Stand under towering pines at Preacher’s Grove. Visit the Itasca Indian Cemetery or Wegmann’s Cabin, landmarks of centuries gone by. Camp under the stars, or stay the night at the historic Douglas Lodge or cabins. Northern Light Opera Company The Northern Light Opera Company (NLOC) will begin its 18th year of producing professional, quality music theater in the Heartland Lakes area by presenting “The Drowsy Chaperone” July 26-28 and August 1-4. “The Drowsy Chaperone” opened on Broadway in 2006 and won five Tony Awards that year. Though this may be unfamiliar to many, NLOC can be trusted to deliver a fun show. It is a musical comedy that takes place in the living room of Man in Chair as he reminisces about his favorite 1928 musical. As Man plays the record of this musical, the record’s zany characters come to life in his living room. There is a showgirl bride, oil tycoon, producer, daft hostess, gangsters, Spanish lover, bumbling best man and many other characters. It has been referred to as “the perfect feel-good escapist musical.” Eight years ago, NLOC started a theater education project called NLOKids for 9-13 year olds. This will be the fourth summer collaborating with the Pine Point communi26

Arts & Entertainment REMARKABLE ARTWORK AT NEMETH ART CENTER
For more than 40 years, the Nemeth Art Center (NAC) has been providing exceptional art opportunities to the Park Rapids area. Admission is free to the NAC galleries, which are open and free to the public on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May through September. The NAC’s permanent collection of over 40 European paintings spans six centuries. From May 2 through May 25, the art center is partnering with Park Rapids Area Schools, Pine Point School and the Park Rapids Library to bring the “Why Treaties Matter” exhibit to the area. The traveling exhibit offers an unprecedented opportunity to learn more about the Native nations in Minnesota and the history of treaty-making with the U.S. This nationally recognized, award-winning exhibit is the result of a historic partnership forged by three organizations: the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, the offi-
cial liaison between the state and Minnesota’s Native nations, the Minnesota Humanities Center and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. It includes 20 free-standing panels and a 14-minute video titled “A Day in the Life of Minnesota Tribal Nations.” Rochester artist Kyong Juhn’s exhibit, “Walk for Hope & Peace,” runs from May 2 through June 1. In 2018, Kyong walked from Rochester to Bemidji – the same distance her mother walked when she escaped from North Korea to Busan, South Korea. The exhibit features photographs of the places and people Juhn met on her journey. An artist reception is 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 11. In collaboration with the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD), the NAC will host a Juried Youth Art Show from May 15 through June 15. A reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 18. A special workshop for young artists interested in applying to art colleges
or programs will be offered by MCAD admissions counselor Christopher Alday. The 2019 season will also highlight artists Georgia Mrazkova, Bruce Engebretson, Luisa Fernanda Garcia-Gomez and Andy Messerschmidt. The NAC will continue “2nd Sat Hap,” an evening of live music, poetry, film and theatrical performances held the second Saturday of the month. The event is 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. May through September. The Nemeth Art Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It is located in the upstairs of the historic Hubbard County Courthouse, located at 301 Court Ave. For more information about upcoming exhibits and membership privileges, visit www. nemethartcenter.org.
DELVE INTO HISTORY OF HUBBARD COUNTY
The Hubbard County Historical Museum opens for the season May 1. The beautiful Victorian building, located at 301 Court Ave., was originally built as a courthouse in 1900.
