Ojibwe Language Project offering bilingual signage Boozhoo! That’s Ojibwe for “greetings or welcome.” Visitors may notice signs in Ojibwe and English. The Ojibwe Language Project grew out of a three-year partnership between the League of Women Voters Park Rapids Area, the Park Rapids Public Library and Pine Point community members. In the first phase of the Park Rapids project, the committee is designing bilingual signs with Pine Point School for their K-8 school and offering support to the Park Rapids High School Indian Education Program as the school district develops its signage. Local businesses are also encouraged to post signs of welcome at their entrances. The committee aims to incorporate dual-language signage throughout the community. “The goal of the project is to create an inclusive,
welcoming environment with an awareness of and respect for Ojibwe culture,” said committee member Beth Baker-Knuttila. “It is the hope of the committee that the use of bilingual signage will acknowledge the Ojibwe as first inhabitants of our area, encourage more curiosity about the Ojibwe culture by local residents and tourists alike, and encourage better relationships between the communities of Park Rapids and Pine Point as well as others on the White Earth Reservation.” In the future, the committee plans to facilitate the expansion of the project more broadly throughout the community in multiple phases. Interest has already been expressed by the city, hospital and some resort owners, according to Baker-Knuttila. Walker, Detroit Lakes, Grand Marais, Duluth, Kelliher, White Earth and Red Lake have launched the Ojibwe Language Project in their communities.

PRCA Rodeo and Xtreme Bulls
July 4-7, 2018
What could be more all-American than a rodeo on the Fourth of July? This year, the Park Rapids Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Rodeo and Xtreme Bulls celebrates its 40th annual performance July 4 through July 7 at the Jokela ProWest grounds on Highway 34, east of town. It’s four days of “extreme” fun and entertainment, featuring bull-riding and a full slate of rodeo events. Park Rapids will host a two-day PRCA Xtreme Bulls event July 4-7, featuring 40 new competitors each day. Since Park Rapids is PRCA-sanctioned, all points earned in the events help the contestants qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) held in Las Vegas in December. And to celebrate its 40th anniversary, the PRCA/Xtreme Bull Ride & Pro Rodeo added more prize money. Other events include kids sheep riding, Moto X and aerial freestyle show, live music nightly and dancing. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with the action starting at 6:30 p.m. Competition takes place rain or shine. For more information, visit parkrapidsbullride.com. PARK RAPIDS ENTERPRISE

Events and Festivals Nevis Pig Races Sunday, July 8, 2018
Prized porkers will round the bend before a cheering crowd in Nevis. This year’s race will be held Sunday, July 8. Race times are planned for 1:05 and 3:05 p.m. The Nevis Pig Races have become an annual highlight that continues to grow. Hundreds pack the bleachers, encouraging young piglets to race around a track built for the day right in the middle of town. Each pig is adorned in a dashing cape, recognizing sponsors who’ve adopted a pig to run in the friendly competition. There will be silly contests for kids between races. A variety of food vendors will be on site, including members of the Nevis Study Club selling their cute pig cookies. A charity auction will be held between races to raise funds for the Pam Lindow Scholarship Foundation. The pigs are trained by Gary and Glenda Dauer of Leader. Explore Itasca’s Mississippi and towering pines Minnesota’s oldest state park celebrates its 127th anniversary. Itasca State Park was established on April 20, 1891 to preserve the old growth pine trees that were in danger of being logged. More than half a million people visit Itasca State Park every year to see the giant pines and wade across the headwaters of the Mississippi River State Water Trail. Park Rapids is the undisputed Gateway to Itasca State Park and the south entrance is a 22-mile drive from Park Rapids north on Highway 71. The east entrance is only a couple miles farther north of the south entrance, and then another mile or so west on Highway 200 – you’ll find it easily at the junction of Highway 71 and Highway 200. On the drive north from Park Rapids on Highway 71 visitors can find several quaint shops and recreation areas to stop at along the way. Also, some fabulous restaurants are located just off of Highway 71 that are sure to satisfy any appetite. Itasca State Park encompasses Lake Itasca, the official source of the Mississippi River, and a scenic area of northern Minnesota that has remained relatively unchanged from its natural state. Today, the park totals more than 32,000 acres and includes more than 100 lakes. Stand under towering pines at Preacher’s Grove. Visit the Itasca Indian Cemetery or Wegmann’s Cabin, landmarks of centuries gone by. Camp under the stars, or stay the night at the historic Douglas Lodge or cabins. Hiking for health: North Country Trail offers many rewards The North Country National Scenic Trail is one of 11 National Scenic Trails in the U.S. and the only one in Minnesota. The North Country Trail runs 4,600 miles from New York to North Dakota. Being open to foot traffic only, Minnesota’s footpaths hold unimpeded travel for hikers, berry pickers, hunters, geocachers, cross country skiers and snowshoers. Short day hikes or overnight hikes are possible. Maps, events and suggested hikes are available at www.northcountrytrail.org. Anyone walking this trail is in for a treat as it meanders through forested hills and valleys interspersed with rivers, lakes, and numerous wetlands. Many enjoy the trail for mushroom hunting, wild flowers and nature photography. Later in the summer, visitors can be rewarded by finding wild strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries along the trail. Locally, the North Country Trail is complete with trailheads and campsites between Remer and near Detroit Lakes. The trail is constructed, maintained and promoted by volunteers. They are the heart and soul of the North Country Trail. Do you enjoy hiking and are you looking for a group to hike with on a regular basis? Join the Laurentian Lakes and Itasca Moraine Chapters. The area’s segments of the North Country Trail are maintained by these two chapters. Volunteers are welcome to adopt a trail section or help with other duties. For information regarding the Laurentian Lakes Chapter, email llc@northcountrytrail.org. For more information on the Itasca Moraine Chapter, email at itm@northcountrytrail.org. Trail routes are shown on the Hubbard County highway map, available at area businesses and at Chambers of Commerce. The latest information can be found on the Facebook page NCTinMN and www.meetup. com/https://www.meetup.com/Chip-NCT-hikers. PARK RAPIDS ENTERPRISE

Itasca State Park A 6-mile, paved biking trail connects Douglas Lodge with the Mississippi River headwaters. Wilderness Drive offers a 10-mile, one-way bike route. Rentals are available. Self-guided hiking trails take visitors through the most scenic parts of the park. In the winter, trails are groomed for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. The park is located 20 miles north of Park Rapids on Highway 71.
Hubbard County’s beautiful natural resources provide the scenery, while numerous trails offer outdoor enthusiasts the opportunity to explore year ‘round. Heartland State Trail The Heartland Trail is a 49-mile, multiple-use trail, open to non-motorized use during the spring, fall and summer. It’s situated on an old railroad bed. It’s an excellent trail for running, biking, in-line skating or walking. There are mile markers posted along the trail, which runs from Heartland Park in Park Rapids to Dorset (6.3 miles), Nevis (5.3 miles), Akeley (6.3 miles), Walker (9.4 miles) Wilkinson (12.5 miles) and ends two miles before Cass Lake (7.2 miles). Users can expect to see a wide variety of wildlife and wildflowers along the way. In the winter, the Heartland Trail is part of a network of groomed riding trails in the area. The hilly snowmobile trail alongside the Heartland Trail, with beautiful scenery and wildlife, is a great opportunity for horseback riding, mountain biking, running, walking and, of course, snowmobiling.
Competitions For those looking to quench their thirst for competition, the Park Rapids area has many events throughout the summer. ● The Firecracker Footrace is held 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 4 at Heartland Park. ● The annual Northwoods Triathlon is Saturday, Aug. 11. Details can be found at www.nevischamber.com/ northwoods-triathlon. ● The annual Headwaters 100 with 100-, 75- and 45mile rides will be Saturday, Sept. 22. For more information, go to www.itascatur.org.
Paul Bunyan State Trail The Paul Bunyan Trail is 115 miles long, extending from Crow Wing State Park to Lake Bemidji State Park. It’s the longest of Minnesota’s state trails and the longest continuously paved rail-trail in the country. It’s built on the former Burlington Northern railroad corridor, dating back to 1893. Based on its scenic value, trailside amenities and maintenance excellence, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy inducted this trail into the 2011 rail-Trail Hall of Fame. Trail users will get their fill of aspens, maples and oaks, and horizon-spanning freshwater lakes. The trail is open year-round to non-motorized use and snowmobile in the winter. In Walker, the route intersects with the Heartland Trail. PARK RAPIDS ENTERPRISE

Quality theatre, music set to entertain
Community Band The Park Rapids Area Community Band engages audiences throughout the area with a variety of repertoire and a host of outstanding musicians. The PRACB presents fall and spring concerts. In what has become tradition, the band will perform Independence Day with a pre-fireworks concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 4 at Heartland Park in Park Rapids. Noon Hour Concerts The Park Rapids summertime tradition of Noon Hour Concerts – featuring both local and visiting musicians – continues with performances from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. the second and fourth Thursdays in June, July and August. Audiences are invited to bring lunch to eat prior to the concerts. Beverages and cookies and bars will be served. All are welcome; concerts are free. The schedule is as follows: Hubbard Methodist Church will host Emma and Jacob Taggart, sister and brother piano duo on June 7. “Unpolished,” an eclectic mix of roots, Americana and Bluegrass music with three-part harmonies, will perform June 14 at Faithbridge Church. Park Rapids Classic Chorale performs June 21 at St. Johns Lutheran Church. Hubbard Methodist Church is site of the June 28 concert with Cheryl Steinborn and Terry Greenawalt playing sacred, Gershwin, Leroy Anderson, classical, Latin American music and pop on two pianos. A string trio, comprising Nikolai, Katya and Emily Kivi, will play July 12 at St. Johns Lutheran Church. Sarah Carlson on pipe organ, Jon Romer on Native American flute and Claire Carlson on flute return to St. Johns Lutheran Church July 19 for their performance. Carlson is director of music ministry at First Lutheran Church in Bemidji. Romer has taught music in tribal setting, elementary through college, for 22 years. Jazz saxophonist Brian Perez will entertain July 26 at Calvary Lutheran Church. He is director of the jazz PARK RAPIDS ENTERPRISE

ensembles and woodwinds at Texas Southern University. August concerts will be presented at Calvary Lutheran Church. On Aug. 2, Hawken Paul will play violin while his mother, Lisa Dove, accompanies on piano. Bob Madeson will play euphonium with Sarah Carlson on piano on Aug. 9. The “Upper Mississippians” will bring their big band music to Calvary on Aug. 16. The local, 13-piece band plays 1920s swing and Dixieland music. Northern Light Opera Company The Northern Light Opera Company (NLOC) will begin its 17th year of producing professional, quality, music theater in the Park Rapids area by presenting Lerner & Loewe’s “My Fair Lady” from July 27 to Aug. 4. “My Fair Lady” is currently enjoying renewed interest on Broadway as it explores themes of class distinction, gender equality, metamorphosis and respect. The story is about the transformation of Eliza from a “guttersnipe flower girl” into a polished lady and aristocratic Higgins into a feeling human being. Some favorite songs are “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly,” “I Could Have Danced All Night” and “Get Me to the Church On Time.” Six years ago, NLOC started a theater education project called NLOKids. This will be the third summer that NLOKids collaborates with the Pine Point Native American community. Equal numbers of 9-13 year olds from Park Rapids and Pine Point spend three weeks writing a script, composing music, building sets and costumes to perform an original musical for family and friends. Besides the confidence and skills developed, amazing friendships have been formed. For more information on NLOC and NLOKids, go to www.northernlightopera.org. Theaters Park Rapids is home to two other live performance theaters, Jasper’s Theater and Long Lake Theater.
