ANTIQUE TRACTOR & ENGINE FIELD DAYS

AUG. 7-8, 2021

Antique Tractor and Engine Club members work to preserve the memory of farming in years gone by through their annual event. The club’s 28th annual Field Days will be held Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 7-8 at the showgrounds on Cty. Rd. 6 south of Park Rapids. Gates are open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Events both days include sawmill and threshing demonstrations, a AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2021

tractor parade, dancing to live music at the pavilion, tractor pulls, sawmill activities and straw baling in the field. The tractor pull welcomes nine farm classes, from 3,000 to 9,500 pounds. Registration begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the contest at 1 p.m. Sunday will begin with devotions in the chapel. A youth pedal tractor pull is at 2 p.m. John Deere will be the featured 8

tractor at this year’s event, with a raffle drawing for a 1948 John Deere M tractor at 5 p.m. Sunday. Raffle tickets are available for a $1 donation. Breakfast and lunch will be sold each day in the pavilion, as well as goodies at the East Forty Mercantile and popcorn and ice cream throughout the event. There will also be a flea market and swap meet both days featuring antiques, crafts and collectibles. PARK RAPIDS ENTERPRISE

AUG. 13-14, 2021

Car enthusiasts are invited to the Northern Knights Car Club’s annual Run to the Rapids car show on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 13-14 in Park Rapids. It’s the club’s 37th annual event. Registration begins at 4 p.m. Aug. 13 at the C’Mon Inn. Saturday’s “Show and Shine” car show is on the first three blocks of Main Ave. and begins at 8 a.m. Many car owners invite visitors to check out their vintage machines and many also share stories of how they restored their cherished classics. The 2021 show will be a Minnesota Street Rod Association voting event.

LEGENDS AND LOGGING

AUG. 12, 14, 2021

Park Rapids Legends and Logging Days celebrates the area’s logging and lumberjack heritage. New for 2021 “The Backyard BBQ Challenge”. Festivities kick off with water wars at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12 on Main Ave. in downtown Park Rapids. It’s a battle to push the cable suspended barrel with fire houses on each end. Teams sign up to compete for bragging rights and possession of the coveted Loony Traveling Trophy. Live music on 2nd Street Stage follows the competition. On Saturday, the activity shifts to the fourth block of Main Avenue in downtown Park Rapids. Gates open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday activities include the return of the award-winning Timberworks Lumberjack Show. Four times throughout the day, lumberjacks will compete against each other in log rolling, pole climbing, cross-cut sawing, hot sawing, axe throwing, chainsaw carving and log chopping. The Backyard BBQ Challenge is an open class backyard grilling challenge where contestants can compete to win prize money in three different cooking classes: ribs, chicken AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2021

and sides. Other family-friendly attractions include a Civil War encampment, kids’ candy cannon shots multiple times during the day, the Smokey Hills Archery Challenge for kids and adults, and tomahawk throwing. The Army National Guard will be on hand with wall climbing. Throughout the day, a food court and beer garden will be available. The Logging Camp comes downtown to serve up a huge loggers’ breakfast starting at 8 a.m. Pike’s sweet corn, RDO fries and Main Street Meats pulled pork sandwiches starts at 11 a.m. Live music by local artist 2 Towns Down can be heard from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. From 5 to 8 p.m., listen to music by award-winning writer, singer and Nashville performer Eli Mosley. Imaginick performs throughout the day. On Sunday, Aug. 15, there will be a free concert featuring artist Levi Pelzer starting at 2:30 to 5 p.m. on the beach at Sleeping Fawn Resort. Events & Festivals LAKE ITASCA REGION PIONEER FARMERS SHOW

AUG. 20-22, 2021

Go back in time and spend a day or two exploring what life was like in the area in the “good ol’ days” at the Lake Itasca Region Pioneer Farmers Show, Friday through Sunday Aug. 20-22. The showgrounds, located off Hwy. 200 at the north entrance to Itasca State Park, are a rustic village featuring a country school, church, shops, post office, pioneer homes and more. Gates open at 7 a.m. daily. Daily demonstrations will showcase how pioneers farmed, cooked and sawed lumber. This year’s mustsee attractions include an enhanced threshing show with machines harvesting a grain field on site. Logging pageantry will include log loading with horses and sawmill operation, demonstrations twice a day. Visitors of all ages will enjoy live music, grain grinding, blacksmithing, shingle and broom making, vintage machinery, a flea market, and daily tractor parades at 1 p.m.

For children, there will be train rides and a playground. Special events during the festival include a country gospel music show and coronation of the pioneer king

and queen Friday evening, a kid’s pedal tractor pull after Saturday’s parade, worship at 9 a.m. Sunday, a quilt drawing and an old-time tractor pull Sunday afternoon.

The Headwaters R/C Club’s annual Fun Fly/Fly In is Aug. 28 at Ron Griffith Field, 16546 109th Ave, four miles west of U.S. Hwy. 71 and south of State Hwy. 34. Recreation SPECTACULAR FALL COLORS FOR HEADWATERS 100 RIDERS Scenic beauty rewards active lifestyles during the 40th annual Headwaters 100 Saturday, Sept. 25, beginning and ending at Century School in Park Rapids. The ride is hosted by the Itascatur Outdoor Activity Club and includes well-marked 100-, 75-, and 45-mile routes through northern woods in their full autumn glory. The 100-mile route leads through the beautiful lakes area to Itasca State Park. After a short hike to the headwaters of the Mississippi, the ride follows Wilderness Drive through the park, proceeds through Lake George, Emmaville, Dorset and Nevis, and takes the Heartland Trail back to Century School. The 75-mile route goes through Itasca State Park on Wilderness Drive, then through Lake George, Emmaville and Dorset before following the Heartland Trail back. The 45-mile route passes through Emmaville and Nevis. Refreshments are included in the registration, with food and beverage stops along the course. T-shirts are included for early registrants. GRAB A PADDLE, CRUISE OUR RIVERS AND LAKES What better way to enjoy a relaxing day on the water than canoeing? The Heartland Lakes area offers many opportunities to paddle until your heart’s content. Canoe outfitters can get you set up if you need to rent equipment. The Headwaters Canoe Club has a summer-long schedule of events for canoeists of all ages and experience levels. Call the host to let them know that you will be paddling, to ask if a shorter option is available, to get directions and further information. ITASCA STATE PARK IS JEWEL OF MINNESOTA Itasca State Park – Minnesota’s oldest state park – was established on April 20, 1891 to preserve the old growth pine trees that were in danger of being logged. More than half a million people visit Itasca State Park every year to see the giant pines and wade across the headwaters of the Mississippi River State Water Trail. Park Rapids is the undisputed Gateway to Itasca State Park and the south entrance is a 22-mile drive from Park Rapids north on Hwy. 71. The east entrance is only a couple miles farther north of the south entrance, and then another mile or so west on Hwy. 200 – you’ll find it easily at the junction of Hwy. 71 and Hwy. 200. On the drive north from Park Rapids on Hwy. 71 visitors can find several quaint shops and recreation areas AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2021

to stop at along the way. Also, some fabulous restaurants are located just off of Hwy. 71 that are sure to satisfy any appetite. Itasca State Park encompasses Lake Itasca, the official source of the Mississippi River, and a scenic area of northern Minnesota that has remained relatively unchanged from its natural state. Today, the park totals more than 32,000 acres and includes more than 100 lakes. Stand under towering pines at Preacher’s Grove. Visit the Itasca Indian Cemetery or Wegmann’s Cabin, landmarks of centuries gone by. Camp under the stars, or stay the night at the historic Douglas Lodge or cabins. Explore Wilderness Drive past the 2,000-acre Wilderness Sanctuary, one of Minnesota’s seven National Natural Landmarks. 20

But the main attraction will continue to be walking across the headwaters of the Mississippi River on stones at the mouth of Lake Itasca. But there are plenty of other activities to do at the park. Other outdoor activities include taking an excursion boat on Lake Itasca, exploring along Wilderness Drive, biking or hiking along more than 30 miles of designated trails, fishing in one of the many lakes, observing the wild flowers in season as well as birding. Recreation WILDFLOWERS TO SEE IN THE HEARTLAND LAKES AREA

From late spring to early fall, the woods, fields and road edges in the Park Rapids and Mississippi headwaters area are a riot of spectacular shapes and colors. Interpretive naturalist Connie Cox with Itasca State Park has shared some pointers for spotting some of summertime’s most beautiful wildflowers. But be careful where you step – sometimes, while you’re pausing to look at one bloom, you may be treading on another. In north country, the amount of daily sunlight is already starting to reduce by early August. “For some of these plants, that actually is the beginning of autumn,” she said. “As you move into August, you’re going to start seeing, in some of the wet areas, things like water hemlock,” as well as bulblet hemlock. Also, white water lilies and yellow water lilies will continue blooming for quite some time. “But you’ll also start seeing things on the landscape, more these yellowish-orange and purple colors,” she said. Such flowers include the flat-topped white aster, the panicled aster. “There are so many asters,” said Cox, “ranging

anywhere from white to a beautiful lavender to almost a blue color.” Joining the brown-eyed Susan on the golden side are, by now, giant sunflowers and Jerusalem artichokes – sunflower-like plants ranging from a foot tall to almost five feet, with huge yellow flowers at the top. “You’ll also start to see the true, late-summer goldenrods beginning as well,” she said. “Canada goldenrod, gray goldenrod, and those brilliant yellow flowers.” Goldenrods habitats can vary from dry pine forests to the water’s edge. “That’s why we have so many varieties of both goldenrod and aster,” said Cox. “They’ll grow anywhere from wet areas to dry areas, along lake edges and river edges, into pine forests, along the edges of hardwood forests. That’s an opportunity to see them almost anywhere, but it could be a different type in each area.” Then there’s the remarkable closed gentian, or bottle gentian, a tubeshaped beauty that never actually opens. Nevertheless, bumblebees have found a way to pollinate it, forcing their way through the petals to take a swig of nectar.

“It’s cool, because you’ll be looking at this flower and people are like, ‘Oh, beautiful! I’m going to take a picture!’ And then all of a sudden, they see the flower moving, and the butt of a bee as it’s backing out.” Another late-summer flower is the pearly everlasting: a little white flower, almost like a giant pea in size. “It’s very dry,” said Cox. “When you touch it, it almost crackles. At the very center, yellow, where the male and female parts are … and the leaves tend to have a kind of dusty, grayish-white, powdery look. A lot of times you’ll see those in roadside ditches.” People exploring the back roads and walking trails may also see the common milkweed, now ramping up its flower production. “They’re all excellent for the pollinators,” she said. Cox also urges people to appreciate the beauty of other parts of wildflowers’ life cycle: the fruits now being borne by the plants that blossomed earlier. Some edible varieties include wild blueberries, wild raspberries, black raspberries and chokecherries. It’s also fun to watch animals feed on them, from birds and chipmunks to black bears.

Recreation However, Cox cautioned, it’s important to know what you’re looking at, because some beautiful berries are not edible. These include the bluebead lily, or clintonia, whose brilliant blue fruit looks similar to the wild blueberry – only the plant produces just two or three berries on a big, straight stem, as opposed to the blushes where blueberries grow. “The leaves are big, lily shaped leaves,” said Cox. “Usually, you find this plant in balsam fir stands, pine stands. It likes it a little bit acidic.” As August moves into September, Cox said, seeds also start to appear

– such as the asters’ puffy seed clusters – and many kinds of ferns spread their fronds as the wildflowers are dying back. Some of the last blooms of summer include thistles and beggar’s picks – a yellow flower whose seeds hook themselves on animals’ fur and people’s socks. “They kind of take a ride, and that’s how the plant moves itself,” said Cox. Also making late appearances are aquatic hemlock and smartweed – a small, pinkish flower that rises up off the water’s surface. By September, the jack-in-the-pulpit

will display fruit instead of flowers. “Big, red berries lining the side of it in a compact cluster,” said Cox. “Not edible.” Meantime, the red baneberry will produce clusters of big, shiny, red or white berries – also non-edible. “Baneberries are kind of a foamy white little flower,” she said. “More people see the fruits from this flower. They’re very beautiful and photogenic.” Finally, Cox said, “The beauty shifts from colorful flowers to the leaves of many of our plants starting to display those autumn colors.”

Recreation WONDERFUL SHROOMS FOUND YEAR-ROUND The Heartland Lakes Area is a great place to spot weird and beautiful life forms from the kingdom Fungi – and if you know what to look for, you might find some of them tasty. Dr. Jonathan Schilling, a fungal biologist with the University of Minnesota and director of the Itasca Biological Station and Laboratory, pronounces “fungi” with a soft g, spoiling that sorry pun. But he recently shared some pointers about mushrooms, from species that many folks look for to ones that might not be so well known.

Hen of the woods Moving on toward fall, the hen of the woods, or maitake, comes out in midto-late August and early September, Schilling said. Like the chicken of the woods, the maitake is something you’ll find on oak trees – but the maitake will typically be at the base of the tree, and can grow as large as a basketball. Schilling described it as a bunch of little, fan- or shell-like protrusions, clustered in a spherical area. “It’s almost like a piece of branched coral,” he said. “It’s a gray color, so it’s not a spectacular looking mushroom, but it’s got quite a lot of flavor.” While he admits that maitake isn’t his favorite AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2021

edible mushroom, Schilling said it’s popular in Asian cuisine and pairs well with umami flavors. “You’ll see hen of the woods or maitake in a lot of dishes in restaurants,” he said.

Rich in antioxidants Schilling said there’s even a type of fungus that people look for during the winter. The chaga (Inonotus obliquus) grows on the side of birch trees – especially paper birch – and looks

like a burnt marshmallow, although it’s rock-hard. “It’s not a mushroom, per se,” said Schilling about the visible part of the chaga. “It’s a funny little appendage from a fungus.” A parasite that feeds off a wound in a living tree, the chaga is widely collected and ground up to make an herbal tea with super-high levels of antioxidants. “Like, blueberries times 100 or something,” Schilling said. “It’s very common throughout the boreal 24

regions of the world.” “Boreal,” meaning northern, refers to the largest natural biome in the world, also known as taiga. It circles from Russia to Scandinavia, Canada, Alaska and back to Russia. Schilling hinted that people interested in collecting chaga might want to check for local restrictions, particularly in state parks. Because few collectible species are out during the winter, there is a possibility of chagas being overharvested. PARK RAPIDS ENTERPRISE

The North Country Trail runs 4,600 miles from New York to North Dakota. Being open to foot traffic only, Minnesota’s footpaths hold unimpeded travel for hikers, berry pickers, hunters, geocachers, cross country skiers and snowshoers. Short day hikes or overnight hikes are possible. rivers, lakes, and numerous wetlands. Later in the summer, you can be rewarded by finding wild strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries along the trail. Arts & Entertainment 2ND STREET STAGE ENTERTAINS WITH LIVE MUSIC Join the great community get-together for the summer music series, 2nd Street Stage,Thursday nights from June 24 through Aug. 19. Event dates are subject to change and audiences will be asked to follow COVID-19 guidelines. Organizers are planning for the worst and hoping for the best, according to a news release. The Park Rapids Downtown Business Association hosts the free, outdoor concerts from 6 to 8 p.m. with bands, a beer garden and family activities downtown. Bring your own lawn chair. The show’s upbeat music and infectious grooves will grab people’s attention. FAMILY-FRIENDLY FUN AT MUSEUMS, LIBRARY Hubbard County Historical Museum The Hubbard County Historical Museum opens for the season May 1. The beautiful Victorian building, located at 301 Court Ave., was originally built as a courthouse in 1900. It still retains its original tin ceiling, eight vaults and gilded lettering on office doors. Admission is by freewill offering,but donations are greatly appreciated. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until September 30. Akeley Paul Bunyan Historical Museum The Akeley Paul Bunyan Historical Museum is located on Main Street, immediately behind the large statue of Paul Bunyan. It opened in 1984 and contains an interesting collection of pictures and artifacts portraying the early Akeley AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2021

history when the largest sawmill in the state was located here and the population was between 3,000 and 4,000. When volunteers are available, the museum is open daily from 1-4 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
