annual report of giving

Dear Park School Friends, 2010–11 WAS A TERRIFIC YEAR at Park, characterized both by the energy of 563 students and by the dedication of our incredible faculty who are always expanding their knowledge and improving their skills in the classroom. Over the last three years, every teacher at Park has been trained in“Differentiated Instruction”— an intentional approach to lesson planning, instruction, and assessment that is meant to make learning more accessible to every student. Park’s commitment to D.I. reflects our belief in continuous professional development and underscores that the School is a thriving teaching and learning environment.

At Park’s 123rd graduation exercises this June, Board Chair Kevin Maroni sat at the front of the tent with me. In this public venue, Kevin presented awards and diplomas, which only hints at the hundreds — maybe thousands — of hours he logged in leading the Board and the School from 2007–2011. Kevin’s tenure coincided with the Foundations for the Future capital campaign, which raised $15 million for financial aid, faculty compensation, and professional development. In addition, we completed the renovation of existing teaching/learning spaces and built new ones, enabling Park to“get bigger” (in terms of overall enrollment) “to get smaller” (in terms of average class section size). Kevin navigated the Board through the stormy economic waters of the last few years, keeping us on course by minimizing losses in the endowment, while faculty salaries remained competitive and the School’s financial aid budget expanded to support 23 percent of our community. Thank you, Kevin, for your skilled management and valued partnership in leading The Park School. I am delighted that Suzie Tapson has agreed to take the helm as our new Board chair, the first woman to hold this position in 18 years. Suzie did a fabulous job over the past year in leading the long-range planning efforts which developed a new strategic plan that focuses on our teachers and improving our curriculum and programs. I look forward to continuing to partner with her as we guide the School in the years ahead. Eighteen years as the Head of School has not diminished my deep appreciation for this community’s generosity in both financial resources and gifts of time. Without the efforts of the Development Office, Park would be almost entirely dependent on tuition and would be a very different institution indeed. When Rob Crawford, who led the School’s fundraising efforts from 2004–2011, accepted a new position, Park was most fortunate to attract Bea Sanders as our new director of development. Bea, who comes to us most recently from Noble & Greenough School, has stepped easily into her new role. We look forward to her leadership. I continue to feel privileged to lead this remarkable community. I thank each and every one of you for your continuing confidence and for your support in keeping Park moving forward.

ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING 2010–2011

CH AR TER OAK ASSOCIATION The Charter Oak Association recognizes our leaders in annual giving through the Annual Fund, Coyne Fund, or other annual gifts. Dubbed the Charter Oak when Park moved to Goddard Avenue in 1971, the large, red oak tree that stands alone at the edge of Park’s playing fields symbolizes the strength of Park School and the values that the School’s leadership donors help to perpetuate. The School gratefully acknowledges the extraordinary generosity of these philanthropists.

Puddingstone Associates A pebbly rock formation called Roxbury puddingstone buttresses most of the foundation around the Park School building. Since leadership gifts strengthen and form the foundation for Park’s Annual Fund, we salute our most generous donors as Puddingstone Associates. The Puddingstone Associates level recognizes donors who contribute $50,000 and above.

Goddard Associates In 1971, Park moved to an historic site on Goddard Avenue, bought by Joseph Goddard in 1712. The Goddard Farm was the secret hiding place of ammunition for the Battles of Concord, Lexington, and Dorchester Heights. In 1967 and 1980, Jim and Mary Faulkner gave the 24-acre property to the School. The Goddard Associates level recognizes donors who contribute $15,000 and above.

Kennard Associates In its early days (1905–1971), Park was situated on the corner of Kennard and Hedge Roads in Brookline. One of the main school buildings, built in 1843 and subsequently owned by the Kennard and Ogden families, gave Park its former address: 25 Kennard Road. The Kennard Associates level recognizes donors who contribute $25,000 and above.

Caroline Pierce Associates Miss Caroline Augusta Pierce (1862–1946) opened her first class in the fall of 1888, teaching sixteen boys and girls from Brookline families and beginning what was later to become The Park School. Miss Pierce was a formidable leader and devoted her life to the School, retiring in 1910 with Miss Julia Park and Miss Mary Elizabeth Ware as her successors. The Caroline Pierce Associates level recognizes donors who contribute $10,000 and above.

Julia Park Associates Park’s name commemorates Julia Ballantine Park (1878–1922), who came to Miss Pierce’s proprietary school in 1906 and became coprincipal and then principal from 1910–1922. In 1916, she renamed the school Miss Park’s School. After her death, parents incorporated the School as The Park School Corporation as a tribute to Miss Park. hen I took the reins of the Park development effort in late July, I could instantly feel the

energy and exhilaration of this place. Teachers

returned at the end of August from their summer breaks, reinvigorated and newly reengaged to inspire our 563 students. The day after Labor Day, the halls were teeming with new faces being led and mentored by their student hosts, and the following day, the new school year was off and running! For nearly twenty years, I have known of and admired Park from my positions at Noble & Greenough School, Milton Academy and Shady Hill School. Indeed, it would be difficult to be in the greater Boston independent school community and not admire Park. Park students make a significant mark at their next schools and beyond; the quality of teaching and learning at Park is among the best in the nation; and the Park volunteer network is legendary. Park models the very best of Pre-K – 9 independent school education, and I am honored to join this community. Park’s fundraising efforts are admired by development officers far and wide, and last year’s results attest to

T HE MARSH ALL B. COYNE SCHOLARS H IP F UN D In 1977, Marshall B. Coyne, grandfather of Ben Lloyd ’78, Amy Lloyd McCarthy ’86, Nick Lloyd ’90, and Julia Lloyd Johannsen ’93, and father of the late Linda Fosburg (former president of the Parents’ Association, trustee, and Board Chair from 1982–86), established the School’s first restricted endowment fund. For the past 34 years, Park’s current and former teachers, administrators, and staff members have made their annual gifts to the Coyne Fund, which supports financial aid. This tradition, unique among independent schools, is a testament to the commitment current and former faculty and staff share to ensure economic diversity at Park. Gifts made to the Coyne Fund during the 2010–11 year, which helped to raise endowment funds to support financial aid, have been counted towards the financial aid component of the Foundations for the Future capital campaign. We are grateful to the following current and former members of Park’s faculty and staff who chose to support the School this year.

T H E FAULKN ER SOCIETY: S ECURING THE FUTURE OF THE PARK S CH OOL T H ROUGH P LANN E D GIV IN G The Faulkner Society is an association of alumni, parents, grandparents of current and former students, current and former faculty and staff members, and other friends who have made provisions to benefit The Park School through their estate planning. Established in 1998, The Faulkner Society honors James and Mary Faulkner, who in their quiet way ensured the future of Park in 1967 by donating 14 acres of the historic Goddard farm for the relocation of the School. Later, Mary bequeathed 10 additional acres and the family’s beautiful home. The Faulkners’ generosity exemplifies the strong feelings of commitment that Park has inspired in its families for over a century. We are pleased to recognize the members of The Faulkner Society. In doing so, we say “thank you” to these individuals and their families for making an extraordinary commitment to our school community.

We invite you to join The Faulkner Society. If you are interested in learning more about planned giving opportunities at Park, please contact Bea Sanders, director of development, at 617-274-6020. Puppet mixed media Rami Abdul-Aziz ’14
