SLU’s location in the heart of metropolitan St. Louis gives you access to a number of industry contacts from the region, making it easy to secure internships and network with professionals.
The undergraduate program in physics at Parks College stresses not only the fundamentals of physics but also the understanding of its applications to other areas such as chemistry, biology and engineering. You learn abstract concepts and complex problem solving with our bachelor’s degree in physics, or combine physics education with a concentration in one of our many engineering disciplines. Parks College prepares you to become a leader in the physics community and make your own discoveries that will propel the world forward with new technologies and an understanding of our universe.
ABOUT SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY
Hands-on learning: Our programs emphasize experiential, interactive learning methods with laboratories, projects and internships from freshman year until graduation. Flexibility: Curriculum is adaptable to your ultimate career goals, allowing you to pursue your own interests and research. Individual faculty attention: SLU’s low 11–1 student-faculty ratio enables one-on-one interaction in coursework and research. Practical experience and research: Develop your abilities with research opportunities on externally funded projects. The Parks College Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) gives you the opportunity to work with a faculty member and get paid to help with their research.
Saint Louis University is a Catholic, Jesuit institution that values academic excellence, life-changing research, compassionate health care and a strong commitment to faith and service. Founded in 1818, the University fosters the intellectual and character development of more than 12,900 students on two campuses in St. Louis and Madrid, Spain. Building on a legacy of nearly 200 years, Saint Louis University continues to move forward with an unwavering commitment to a higher purpose, a greater good.
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Engineering Physics You concentrate in one of the engineering disciplines offered by Parks College: aerospace, biomedical, computer, electrical or mechanical engineering. Graduates of SLU’s physics programs learn: + A firm understanding of the principles of physics and the ability to apply these principles to problems of both fundamental and practical interest. + An ability to design and conduct experiments as well as to analyze and interpret data. + The broad education necessary to understand the impact of science in a global, economic, environmental and social context. + The thinking skills and ability to identify, formulate and solve technical problems.
Sample classes include: + Classical Mechanics + Electricity and Magnetism + Numerical Analysis + Optics
+ Probability and Statistics for Engineers + Quantum Mechanics + Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics
Parks College students typically apply for competitive internships and cooperative education programs with private firms or government agencies in the summer. During the school year, you can join one of several engineering and physics student organizations or assist our faculty with their research to further enhance your knowledge and skills.
Industry and government agencies have long recognized the quality of graduates from Parks College. Alumni of our physics programs are prepared to enter graduate study or pursue opportunities at a variety of businesses, agencies and organizations, including: + Anheuser-Busch + Argonne National Laboratory + Boeing + Lockheed Martin + NASA-Langley + RCA + The U.S. Air Force, Navy and Army
A B O U T O U R FAC U LT Y The faculty at Parks College are defined by their expert knowledge in the fields most important to physics, including:
“I will always be grateful I had the opportunity to study in the physics department at Saint Louis University. Professors always took the time to explain concepts outside of class and took a GENUINE INTEREST in my ACADEMIC SUCCESS. I realize now, as a geophysics graduate student, just how much I benefited from my time at SLU.” Elena C. Baluyut, B.S. in Physics, 2014
