A drainer to rule them all

RAASM HAS BEEN MANUFACTURING THE TYPE OF WASTE OIL DRAINERS THAT MANY OTHER BRANDS HAVE UNSUCCESSFULLY TRIED TO IMITATE. WE SPEAK TO NEW ZEALAND DISTRIBUTORS EMCO TO FIND OUT WHAT MAKES THEM SO COVETED

One of the common issues you have with waste oil drainers is that they will block,” says James Driscoll, managing director of Equipment Marketing (EMCO), New Zealand’s premier reticulation products and installation services, based in Hamilton. James discusses how many workshops often use these drainers — affectionately known as R2D2s — to collect dust, mud, and other materials from vehicles’ undercarriages and wheels. “They’ll chip dust and other bits into the top of the receiver and this can then mix with the waste oil and form a heavy, thick, sludgy tar at the bottom of the receiver which can lead to serious blockages.”

These blockages mean technician downtime, potential delays in vehicle turnaround, and eventually cost workshops money in unnecessary maintenance or having to fix relationships with their client base.

RAASM waste oil drainers are designed to help offset these problems.

Headquartered in a picturesque, tree-clad and lake-front field on the outskirts of Venice, Italy (S. Zeno di Cassola), RAASM has a nearly 50-year history of high-quality fluid management products. They offer a wide range of technologically advanced equipment and strive to achieve the best possible quality by paying close attention to every detail of the design and manufacturing process.

In New Zealand, EMCO is proud to supply, among other RAASM products, their 90-litre mobile waste oil drainer (model RAASM 42090).

This is a gravity and air operated suction drainer which is ideal for quick engine oil changes of any motor vehicle. Waste oil can be collected by gravity using the bowl mounted on the adjustable support, or by suction through the supplied probes. After depressurisation, the drainer works independently without requiring continuous connection to the compressed air system.

Part of the reason for the success of this drainer is its manufacturing. High precision robotised welding has been combined with rigorous testing, and finished with lead and heavy metal-free nontoxic polyester resin paints for exteriors (with an average thickness of 80µ and saline mist resistance corrosion testing).

The resin is a critical component in helping the drainers minimise blockages. “As a consequence, you get really good durability from them with respect to the collection of the waste, but also being able to push or suck all the waste out of the receiver,” says James.

The 90L drainers include a removable, oversized funnel; anti splash screen; adjustable bowl to increase operating range; vacuum gauge for checking suction power; prechamber/tank connection and oil draining cock; transparent eight-litre prechamber with level indicator; and 2m suction hose with probe connection. It has a waste oil suction speed of 1.5-2l/min (oil 70°–80°C, with 6mm probe), and a 2m hose for draining the tank with air.
