Australia and New Zealand, says that the decision to setup locally in New Zealand back in 2008 was an easy one. “Mechanics and resellers around New Zealand have been strong supporters of the EXEDY brand and product for many years,” he says. “In order to return that support and to afford the New Zealand customer the best service, delivery and range available, we had to establish sales, support and warehousing infrastructure on the ground”. Reinforcing New Zealand’s valued status within the EXEDY group, global president Hidehito Hisakawa visited EXEDY’s New Zealand operations in Auckland and Christchurch during October. The future belongs to Fasep NEW ZEALAND’S FASEP WHEEL ALIGNER DISTRIBUTOR, TREADWAY EQUIPPED, ASKS A VERY SIMPLE QUESTION OF POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS: HOW MUCH TIME HAVE YOU GOT TO WASTE TODAY? THIS ITALIAN MANUFACTURER’S ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY OFFERING IS SPEEDING UP THE WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCESS FOR KIWI WORKSHOPS EVERYWHERE

F

asep Wheel Aligners use advanced technology to engineer the most accurate wheel alignment systems on the market. But they’re also incredibly intuitive to use as well, cutting down on the complexity. Each Fasep Wheel Aligner comes with a powerful, highly-specified Intel computer running the latest Windows software. A large, clear screen helps operators make correct adjustments even when at the rear of the vehicle. Designed, built and tested in Italy, the Fasep VOC-K Aligner reduces preparation time by up to 80% thanks to its simple, user-friendly software and Fasep’s patented contact clamps. The VCO-K wheel aligner comes standard with these; providing a unique method for saving time and reducing mounting errors. Mounting onto the tyre means there’s no need to worry about the condition of the rim (buckles etc) as the operator is aligning with what makes contact with the road itself. More compact, lightweight, and rugged, the VOC-K’s Wintrax 2 sensors are resistant to impact or falling. This is combined with improved practicality and functionality thanks to a new system for anchoring the shaft of the chuck through a ‘click ball’. Fasep’s battery technology has also been updated, and is now more easily replaceable, with the added benefit of being rechargeable by cable. There’s peace-of-mind for Fasep customers in terms of back-end software too; the manufacturer updates its vehicle specification once a year. The user can even insert their own specifications into the machine for added flexibility and personalization. The machine is also thoroughly manoeuvrable, being on wheels and with no fixed cameras, and can be used on a drive-on, drive-off hoist. One early adopter

of the new Fasep VOC-K is Phil Webber from Action Tyres, who was looking for improved efficiency through his workshop. “We really wanted something that is simple to operate and easy to understand. On our first day using the machine, we were going through a bit of a learning curve with it, yet we still managed to crank out four wheel alignments within an hour. “That just goes to show what the capabilities of this machine are,” says Phil. To find out more about Fasep Wheel Aligners, visit treadwayequipped.co.nz. Or give the team a call on 0800 436 436 for a demo.

Parts Connection super heroes on show at Capricorn Dinner & Display AT THIS YEAR’S ANNUAL CAPRICORN DINNER & DISPLAY, THE PARTS CONNECTION TEAM TOOK THEIR TRADE BOOTH TO NEW LIMITS WITH A ‘SUPER HERO’ THEMED STAND, COMPLETE WITH HEROES AND VILLAINS

H

eld at the end of September at Sky City Convention Centre, the annual Capricorn Dinner & Display event began with a trade show featuring between 35 and 40 Capricorn preferred suppliers. The Parts Connection stand was designed and built specifically for the show, with a night skyline backdrop complete with telephone box for super heroes to change in. As customers entered the phone box they were able to choose a super hero mask in order to then fight villains around the stand. The villains popped out from the wall and the idea was to throw bean-filled balls at them in order to knock the dastardly targets out, making Parts Connection’s stand an interactive hit with visitors: so much so, that Parts Connection won this year’s Best Booth Award. Although Parts Connection has

6

Auto Channel Issue #8 November 2018

had the honour of winning this award a few times before, many people thought this year’s stand was the best yet. As a bonus, when leaving the stand through big metal doors, guests came out to receive super hero chocolate and automatically entered the draw to win a Fitbit or Bluetooth

speaker. With the trade show over and gala festivities underway in the evening portion of the Capricorn Dinner & Display, the Parts Connection team all looked the part in super hero costumes, capping a great event.

Repco launches new heavy-duty RCT brake pad: RCT Extreme REPCO HAS DEVELOPED AN ALL NEW BRAKE PAD RANGE DESIGNED TO OFFER LONGER LIFE AND BETTER BRAKE FEEL FOR TOWING APPLICATIONS, OR LIGHT VEHICLES OPERATING UNDER HEAVY LOADS

R

epco has developed an all new brake pad range designed to offer longer life and better brake feel for towing applications, or light vehicles operating under heavy loads. The new RCT Extreme pads (REX) have a semi-metallic formulation, which offers longer pad life and consistent performance on vehicles carrying heavy loads, with improved pedal feel. Like the original RCT pad, it utilises the Radial Chamfer Technology (exclusive to Repco) used to shape the leading and trailing edges of the brake pad to a smooth curve. This provides maximum pad contact with the disc rotor and helps to ensure an even distribution of brake pressure. Semi-metallic pads maintain their performance at higher temperatures than other compounds, giving customers confidence that they will continue to perform in both inner city driving and under

heavy load on the open road, when towing, or in 4X4 conditions. To maintain the high standards of performance set with RCT, Repco has ensured that RCT Extreme has undergone rigorous testing in real life applications to make sure they are suitable for NZ’s varied conditions and applications. A lot of on-car testing has been undertaken both here and in Australia, and even on our supplier’s own 8.6km ‘in house’ test track — the same track used in the extensive development of its predecessor RCT. The extra performance and durability of the new pads, while maintaining driveability at lower loads, will see them introduced at a premium over standard RCT pads. Pricing has yet to be announced but Repco says it will be competitive with other premium metal pads. Standard RCT pads, as a successful brand with strong demand, will continue to be restocked and sold alongside the new REX pads.

Other features carried over from the regular RCT pads include the five-layer NBR silent guard shims to further dampen noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). These are two nitrile-butadiene rubber shims sandwiched either side of a steel plate bonded by a special heat-resistant adhesive. The shim is finished off with a premium gloss protective laminate to ensure reduced NVH. All RCT pads also feature an orange ‘stop-ready stripe’. This is a bedding-in compound that helps condition the pads and rotor on first contact. It offers performance straight out of the box and eliminates the need and risk of bedding in new brakes. The new Rex pads will be offered in 41 part numbers initially covering most of the light commercial vans, utes/light trucks, SUVs and 4X4s on the road today. For more information contact the trade staff at your local Repco (0800 472 787) or Appco (0800 200 100) branch for details.

Dayco offers quality components for superior engine cooling PRECISION-ENGINEERED TO PERFORM TO OEM STANDARDS, DAYCO COMPONENTS OFFER BOTH CONSISTENT RESULTS AND LONGER LIFE

D

ayco’s quality component offering for better engine cooling includes thermostats, coolant expansion tanks, heater tap control

valves and fan clutches. The thermostat’s role in engine management is vital. Dayco thermostats are designed to OEM specifications and are manufactured with a heatsensing, wax-filled copper power pill that detects the coolant temperature in the engine. The Dayco heat-sensing power pill controls coolant flow from the radiator when the engine is cold to reach optimum operating temperature quickly. It then allows coolant to circulate throughout the engine when the operating temperature is reached to create the perfect temperature-controlled engine environment. Meanwhile, Dayco coolant expansion tanks are also manufactured to exacting OE specifications. These tanks are used to recover the coolant that escapes the cooling system past the pressure cap due to rising pressure and temperature. In a properly operating cooling system, the coolant will then be siphoned back into the radiator as the temperature drops. Tanks will often become discoloured, brittle, contaminated with sludge or they may even break requiring immediate replacement for the cooling system to

continue effective operation. Dayco boasts a premium quality aftermarket range of heater tap control valves to cover many makes and models. The purpose of the heater control valve is to regulate the flow of coolant to the heater core. In the ‘off’ position the heater valve blocks coolant flow to the heater core when no heating is required. When heating is required the reverse takes place. Common failures include leakage, blocking and because most late model valves are made of polymer, cracking when removing heater hoses is also very common. Dayco fan clutches are made from die-cast aluminium and have a machined body that helps to provide for a tight fit within close tolerances, while producing precision performance. Deep fins increase the surface area for improved heat dissipation, while exclusive drive spines are knurled and burnished. The shaft surface resists slippage caused by heavy torque loads and assures longer bearing life. Premium quality bearings fitted to all Dayco fan clutches ensure longer life and quieter, smoother running. A special silicone fluid inhibits heat build-up to prolong service life. A bi-metal thermostatic spring adjusts the fan speed in response to operating temperature requirements, thereby reducing fuel consumption.

To find out more about Dayco’s vast range of engine cooling and related thermal management products, contact your Dayco distributor or visit dayco.com.

B

A performance engine deserves a Mantic clutch THE PERFORMANCE AND COMPETITION ENGINE MARKET DEMANDS EQUAL OR BETTER PERFORMANCE FROM A CLUTCH. TO PUT THE POWER FROM DOWN FROM AN UPRATED ENGINE OR AGGRESSIVE PERFORMANCE LOOK NO FURTHER THAN ACROSS THE TASMAN TO MANTIC

M

antic is the performance arm of Clutch Industries (CI) which has been designing, engineering and building clutch systems for more than 60 years. Mantic is much more than a CI brand. It is set up as separate division within CI so that it can focus on research and development needed to stay at the leading edge of performance clutch design and manufacture. It claims to offer most innovative clutch system in the market. And the strategy is working. Mantic products, engineered and manufactured at their plant in Melbourne are now sold in nearly every corner of the globe. They are available in New Zealand through Repco and Appco. Performance is a broad area and it means different things to different drivers. Mantic clutches offer different solutions depending on the kind of driveability you need. Take these for example:

Upgrading a Nissan S14 SR20DET with a bigger turbo? Mantic’s MS1 or MS3 will handle the extra power. The MS1-1231-BX – Mantic Stage 1 is a 10” ER2 grooved SG iron high clamp cover assembly with an organic disc. It offers a peak torque capacity of 564Nm. That’s high torque capacity without compromising street drivability. The MS3-1231-BX – Mantic Stage 3 is also a 10” SG iron high clamp cover assembly but with sprung cushioned cerametallic buttons. Peak torque capacity is a hefty 870Nm. It’s more aggressive than an organic disc while still having some dampening to allow for street use. Mantic also covers the range at the higher end including direct fit twin disc kits and multiple disc configurations for bespoke applications. For more information contact the trade staff at your local Repco (0800 472 787) or Appco (0800 200 100) branch.

lackfern’s new-look website has evolved from being primarily an introductory portal, to a fully usable tool for members of the cooperative. The emphasis of the change is to enable members and their staff to easily connect with suppliers. The first stage of the upgrade features finger-touch functionality for either phone, email or text contact through smartphone, laptop or desktop PC. Members can make the most of the site’s improved functionality without having to login. This saves valuable charge-out time, processdriven aggravation and, consequently, money as well. When the Blackfern member opens the site, they can either touch on the supplier logo on the home page, or open the supplier tab. This will bring up a comprehensive search function, allowing for searches by category, or national or regional supplier and branch contacts. The website’s next stage of development will give members instant access to supplier specials and product information. REDARC launches 50amp in-vehicle battery charger REDARC ELECTRONICS HAS INTRODUCED THE BCDC1250D; A BIGGER, MORE POWERFUL 12-VOLT DUAL INPUT 50AMP IN-VEHICLE BATTERY CHARGER

B

oasting a 50-amp charging output makes the BCDC1250D the most powerful in REDARC’s BCDC range. It has been designed to charge all major lead-acid batteries and includes a lithium (LiFeP04) charging profile. What’s more, the BCDC1250D has been developed to provide a higher current output and also features an additional charging stage known as Soft Start. This charging stage has been specially engineered so that it can handle more demanding applications. A key feature of the BCDC1250D is separate

vehicle DC and solar inputs which simplifies the installation process. The unit will charge from both solar and the alternator simultaneously and with inbuilt Green Power Priority the BCDC automatically selects the solar charge first, taking the load off the vehicle’s alternator. The 50-amp charger is compatible with both standard and variable voltage/smart alternators and can be used in both 12 and 24-volt vehicle systems. “The dual input BCDC’s have proven to be popular with the end users and the feedback we have received has been overwhelmingly positive,” says

REDARC Managing Director, Anthony Kittel. “The addition of a 50amp model will allow the consumer to charge higher capacity batteries or multiple battery banks.” The BCDC1250D is the third variant of the awardwinning Smart-Start dual input range, joining the BCDC1225D and BCDC1240D. No spring surprise as September new vehicle registration numbers cool off NEW VEHICLE REGISTRATIONS WERE DOWN BY FOUR PERCENT DURING SEPTEMBER, ALTHOUGH THE MARKET OVERALL IS SLIGHTLY UP WHEN COMPARED TO THE FIRST NINE MONTHS OF 2017

S

eptember 2018 new vehicle registrations totalled 13,910 vehicles; a figure which is down 4.0% (or 597 units) on September 2017, said David Crawford, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association (MIA). “Year to date, the market is up by 1.0% (1,161 units) compared to the first nine months of 2017. But registrations of 9,432 passenger and SUV vehicles for the month of September were down 423 units on September 2017; a decrease of 4.3%. “Registrations of 4,478 commercial vehicles were down by 174 units (3.7%) on September 2017,” he said. Toyota retained the overall market leader position with 21% market share (2,944 units), followed by Ford with 10% (1,369 units). Third place for September was Mitsubishi, with 9% market share (1,219 units). Drilling down further, Toyota retained the market lead for passenger and SUV registrations with 21% market share (1,955 units) on the back of strong rentals for the month. Mazda was second in the September league table, with 9% (812 units) and Mitsubishi was third with 8% market share (766 units). In the commercial sector, Toyota managed to

12

Auto Channel Issue #8 November 2018

bump off the ever-present Ford attack, retaining the market lead with 22% share (989 units). Naturally, Ford was in second spot with 20% (901 units), while Mitsubishi continued its solid bronze run as we head into the fourth quarter of 2018, with 10% market share (453 units) in the commercial sector. The top-selling model for the month of September was the Toyota Corolla with 872 units of which 643 were rentals, followed by the Ford Ranger with 802 units and then the Toyota Hilux with 667 units. Year to date, Toyota continues to dominate the

rental market with the top six spots occupied by Toyota models. “With the continued high price of petrol and recent new fuel taxes, the trend towards downsizing is becoming more apparent,” concluded Mr Crawford. “The SUV Medium segment remains the top segment for the month of September with 18% market share. This was followed SUV Compact segment with 14%, the Pick Up/Chassis Cab 4x4 also with 14% of the market, and then Small Vehicle segment with 11% market share.”

Inaugural Capricorn Rising Stars Apprentice of the Year competition winner announced THE CAPRICORN RISING STARS APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR HAS BEEN SELECTED FROM MORE THAN 500 NOMINATIONS RECEIVED FROM CAPRICORN MEMBERS ACROSS AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND

C

apricorn is delighted to announce that Mark Smith, an apprentice from The Battery Terminal in Belconnen, ACT, has been named as the inaugural Capricorn Rising Stars winner. CI — the trusted name in aftermarket clutches UPRATED ENGINES, OR EVEN HEAVY USE CAN MAKE SHORT WORK OF STANDARD CLUTCHES. CI CLUTCHES PROVIDE THE ANSWER, NO MATTER WHAT THE QUESTION

C

I (Clutch Industries) are world class innovators in performance clutch design and engineering. Their product range, available here through Repco and Appco, has got the performance clutch market covered. The sky’s the limit when it comes to performance clutch options but for customers needing a stronger clutch to fit a standard housing, CI’s Heavy Duty (HD) clutch systems will likely provide a onestop solution. As the name implies, the heavy duty line is a tough, no-nonsense clutch upgrade that’s engineered to handle loads of torque. Not just a bit more torque; CI says it leaves standard specification clutches for dead. The HD clutch is designed to endure the rugged

demands of workhorse vehicles, but that means they are ideal for any vehicles generating higher than usual loads. It’s a logical choice for those who want or need the security of an all-round beefier clutch and relentless reliability but with easy driveability. The HD clutch covers the range from modified engines to the extra demands of towing, delivery driving or heavily loaded trade use and is equally comfortable navigating congested city streets or on the track. Take a normally aspirated S14 Nissan that has acquired an SR20DET, the R1231NHD — CI Heavy Duty — 9.5” clutch is a natural choice uprated clutch. It features a high clamp cover assembly with organic disc. Peak torque capacity is 498Nm. It’s a

great bang for your buck heavy duty upgrade. For more information contact the trade staff at your local Repco (0800 472 787) or Appco (0800 200 100) branch.

7AGE Engine Build BUILDING A BULLETPROOF 400KW TOYOTA 9AGTE FOUR CYLINDER FOR ONE OF NEW ZEALAND’S FASTEST FRONT WHEEL DRIVES

W

hen you think fast front-wheel drives here in New Zealand, there’s one New Zealand–based car in particular springs to mind, one that’s been asserting its authority for well over a decade now. Barry Manon’s 9A-GTEpowered 1988 Toyota Levin GTZ is no stranger to this magazine, from running 10s back in 2010, before making the switch to circuit racing and focusing on Time Attack, to the development of a 400-plus-kilowatt, 20-valve 9A-GTE turbo. Focusing on his local Hampton Downs and Pukekohe Park tracks, it wasn’t long before Barry had wrangled the surprisingly simple chassis into the 1.08s around Hampton — but this was when the surge problems started. Being one of the world’s most renowned Toyota 4A-G builders

16

Auto Channel Issue #8 November 2018

through his company Manon Racing Products (MRP), Barry is no stranger to building tough 9A-GTEs, but even his own custom-baffled wet sumps were no match for the Gs, as he explains: “I got away with the wet sump for a long time, but as soon as I started running 1.08s around Hampton, it just couldn’t stop the surge; there was too much g-force around the final corner. I guess being front-wheel drive, and the sump being where it is — it’s on the wrong side, like in an Evo — you really want the bulge on the passenger side. If it was a left-hand track, it would probably be OK.” For the coming season, Barry will step up to a completely new engine build both to address this issue and in the quest for more mid range with a slight top-end increase. Keeping the block together when pushing over 400kW requires a girdle plate to

hold the bores square, which was attached to the brand spanking new-old-stock 7A-FE block before being honed and line bored. Barry tells us that the 7A-FE block doesn’t need too much more attention until you start pushing four-digit power figures, when you grout fill the block. The rotating assembly consists of a custom eightbolt stroker crank, and, unlike his previous engine build, this one features large counterweights in an attempt to reduce harmonics. It’s something that Barry tells us has become more and more popular with high-power engines, with builders steering away from knife-edged cranks. To counter this added weight, the flywheel has been put on a diet. The bores measure 81.5mm, while the stroke measures 90mm, thanks to Saenz I-beam rods with DLC-coated pins. The 9.0:1-compression pistons

have been custom-made by CP Carillo for Barry and feature special rings, ceramic coating on the crown, and Teflon-coated skirts. Bearings are ACL Race Series, with MRP-modified mains, in an attempt to properly feed oil to the rods. Further oiling upgrades include machining the block to accept oil squirters and the inclusion of a dry-sump system. The pump itself is a three-stage AT Power unit, while the rest of the kit has been developed in-house at MRP, including a baffled dry-sump pan and billet mount kit. Again, a 4A-GE 20-valve head will be utilized, although, this time, the CNC porting has been taken to the next level, especially on the exhaust side, in a quest to build boost quicker. “We have gone with oversized Inconel for the exhaust valves, as we were finding the old ones to be pitted and worn due to the ethanol and heat after a season’s running. The inlet valves are stainless, and we’re using Supertech off-the-shelf springs, bronze guides, and OEM retainers,” he says. The cams are the same custom Kelfords that the last engine ran, as Barry is limited by his small 1900cc capacity, and believes that these cams strike a good balance between power and mid range. Having previously suffered issues with the head pushing water at high boost, even with oversized 11mm studs, the new engine will be clamped with 12mm items and use a TRD multilayer

gasket with a stopper layer. With improved mid range the main focus, the Turbonetics turbo has been further modified with larger wheels and T4 exhaust housing — “[t]he theory being to try to keep things (charge temp) cooler with the larger twin-scroll ports,” Barry explains. The old billet compressor wheel was maxing its flow at 410kW, so a larger billet unit was also fitted to handle upwards of 520kW. A new

twin-scroll manifold will be built by Dan Salter and use a pair of Gen 5 Turbosmart 40mm gates controlled by the A’Pexi controller. The intake side of the equation will remain from the previous set-up, with ported quad throttles with 47mm butterflies and internal bellmouths in the two-piece custom plenum. Barry expects the new package to be in the car within a month and will be back on the dyno at ST

Hi-tec, where the car has always been dynoed, to back-to-back the graphs with the old 420kW setup. The electronics will remain, with the trusty old Autronic SMC ECU and M&W CDI. With a few changes to stiffen up the old chassis including extending the roll cage, new ratios in the custom MRP dogbox, and some weight loss, Barry’s PB at both Auckland tracks is surely on borrowed time.

Case Study: AECS AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEMS (AECS) RECENTLY UNDERTOOK SOME DIAGNOSTIC DETECTIVE WORK ON AN OLDER NISSAN WITH AN ENGINE THAT REFUSED TO FIRE — HERE’S HOW THEY RESOLVED THE ISSUE

I

t isn’t always the really complex stuff that AECS like to tackle. Yes, difficult and unusual cases are the core of their support offering. Training, quality equipment and experience have pushed the AECS

technician’s way up in terms of their diagnostic ability. After 19 years in the business though, AECS have seen plenty of complex problems resolved. Here’s a case study featuring a problem presented to the AECS call centre that was more straightforward, but still engendered a fair amount of analysis. An older model 1997 Nissan Sentra CA15DE was recently towed into a workshop with the engine winding over but not firing up. The car was driven the day before and during the drive it suddenly cut out clean; no misfiring first, almost as if the key was turned off during driving. These Nissan engines are really not complex at all. This had to be relatively easy, the problem is not intermittent so the AECS team figured it had to be staring them in the face. The workshop where the car was presented has an ATS scope and AECS technical support. The diagnostician did what most would do; check for fault codes (none) and hook up the ATS scope to check for ignition and injection. If there is no ignition, no injection, or both are missing, the engine stops going; that much is easy to establish. When both are present as is only visible with the scope, suspicion would usually fall on fuel pressure. The pump could have stopped. Removing the fuel return hose while winding over showed that the fuel pump was pumping as the return was discharging fuel. Slightly more problematic, perhaps? The AECS team took a look at the details their diagnostic recording provided them.

Hyundai’s bread-and-butter SUV has been thoroughly overhauled for its fourth-generation outing What is it? Hyundai has been making plenty of noise about other models in its stable of late, notably the Kona and IONIQ electric vehicles. The i30 N hot hatch is a worthy addition to the ranks as well, offering up Golf R levels of performance with a suitably spitty/shouty soundtrack and an ‘N-Mode’ go-faster button on the steering wheel. This, though, is where the big money remains for the Korean manufacturer. The Santa Fe SUV is immensely popular, offering plenty of bang-for-buck, underscored by usable family-sized space. Maserati Levante S GranSport A Maserati SUV? Well, everyone else is doing it…

Is it any good? Some aspects of the Levante remind you it was first dreamt up 15-odd years ago. While featuring plenty of carbon fibre trim and sumptuous leather, the interior doesn’t really advance things along much from a design point of view. Externally it reminds (especially in sideprofile) of an Infiniti rather than the output of an Italian brand synonymous with sexy cars. The grille, however, leaves you under no illusions as to what’s following along behind you though, with those massive concave strakes and trident mascot. Where the Levante excels though is in going stonkingly fast and making a lovely cacophony doing so. It also performs well off-road: we had the privilege of driving the Levante S in dunes on the outskirts of Dubai when it was first released. The Levante is the

New Cars

Mercedes-Benz A-Class

Remember that old A-Class from the start of the 2000s? That strangely tall roller skate with the sit-up-and-beg posture? Yeah, things have definitely changed for the model these days

What is it? Mercedes-Benz’s smallest offering, the A-Class, is the Stuttgart-headquartered brand’s hatchback, fighting off the usual competitors in the shape of the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3. While hatchbacks might not be the go-to city car the were, say, a decade ago, the A-Class makes for a compelling argument that smallest remains bestest.

baubles of unattainability before (slowly) trickling down to other models. Not so anymore: the German firm has realised that early adopters of new tech aren’t buying big sedans. They’re buying crossovers and hatchbacks (er… and vans; MBUX is available in top models of Sprinter as well). Is it any good? Put it this way; the only A-Class on offer at present

What’s interesting about it? Mercedes-Benz has invested a heap of new technology and innovative development work into the A-Class, and despite its diminutive proportions, it has a lot riding on its parcel shelf. It’s interesting to see that it’s only the second Mercedes-Benz model to adopt the carmaker’s, frankly, stunning widescreen cockpit (after the E-Class exec sedan) and it’s also the first model to feature the new MBUX intelligent voice control system (more on which in a mo’). These sorts of advances were always showcased in Mercedes-Benz’s flagship S-Class sedan in the past,

in New Zealand is the entry-level A 200. And it has already made the finalist lists of several ‘Car of the Year’ awards. The 2018 A-Class has more shoulder, elbow and headroom inside, as well as bootspace that offers 29-litres more than before (important in a hatchback). All models will feature a seven-speed DCT transmission, while the A 200 boasts 120kW/250Nm from its 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. One of the most-notable innovations in the new A-Class is the MBUX intelligent voice control with natural language comprehension. All the driver or passengers need to do is say “Hey Mercedes” and the system will allow voice control inputs of a wide variety of

functions, such as infotainment requests like selecting specific music, navigation system destination inputs, making phone calls, or writing and hearing messages all through voice commands, completely hands free. The system learns the voices of the owner too, remembering regularly-used inputs and discerning variations in speech between different drivers. It’s interesting tech. And remember: it’s available from the entry-point up. How cool is that? What’s it going to cost? Base price for the Mercedes-Benz A 200 hatchback is $60,900. There will be an A 180 and an A 250 available in 2019, although no word yet on pricing for those. The inevitable AMG A45 will also make an appearance at some point. And what a glorious day we imagine that’ll be. Oh, and if you’re wanting to add some AMG finery to proceedings in lieu of the actual AMG A45 and its much larger price tag, you’ll need to fork out another $1,390 for 19” AMG alloys and $3,190 for an AMG body trim kit. Still, probably worth it.

Volkswagen Touareg

Volkswagen’s range-topping SUV just got a lot better. If you’re wanting seven seats though, you’ll still have to look elsewhere What is it? This is Volkswagen’s biggest passenger SUV, bar none. The Touareg is difficult to spell, but easy to be impressed by, especially now that it features plenty of new-generation tech on-board, like an amazing digi dashboard that stretches across almost the entire fascia. What’s interesting about it? For a start, it’s built on the same high-tech platform as the Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga and Porsche Cayenne. This means it’s bigger (77mm longer and 44mm wider) than before and there’s a lot more room inside for both passengers and stuff in the boot, too. Despite the bigger dimensions, though, the new Touareg is 106kg lighter than its predecessor. And thanks to a new all-wheel steering system, which enables the rear wheels to turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels at low ‘garage gear’ speeds, a turning circle of just 11.1 metres is achievable. So? Well, that’s close to the turning circle of a Volkswagen Golf hatchback. One thing you won’t find thanks to this extra space, though, is a third row of seats. The Touareg remains a five-seater, with the Audi Q7 taking up the sevenseater mantel for the Volkswagen Group’s combined premium SUV fleet. Is it any good? It absolutely is, although with those alternative models I listed up top (and not forgetting other non-VW Group fare such as the BMW X5, Range Rover Sport and Jeep Grand Cherokee), it’s clear there is plenty of choice at the top end of the SUV market. The last Touareg suffered from criticism that it was a tad… well, boring. This was amplified as the previous generation aged. The updated example kicks that accusation to touch though.

24

Auto Channel Issue #8 November 2018

The new SUV is a seriously good-looking and well-specified car, with a heap of sophisticated stuff onboard. It costs a fair bit, but then of course it does; it’s Volkswagen’s flagship. The most obvious update upon climbing inside is that new Innovation Cockpit, which does away with virtually every traditional switch and button, offering completely touch- and gesture-control-based functionality instead. It’s also the largest digital cockpit in its class (which is now a thing: see our report on the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class on these pages too). Night Vision is another new advent for the latest Touareg. Like something out of a spy thriller, this

system uses a thermal imaging camera to detect pedestrians, cyclists and even animals at night, warning the driver in the event of a possible prang. Some things never change though, which is a good thing. The Touareg remains an all-wheel drive and boasts a braked tow rating of 3500kg. What’s it going to cost? There are two trim levels available in New Zealand: the $92,990 TDI V6, and the $107,990 TDI V6 S. They both share the same turbo diesel engine in two states of tune: 170kW/500Nm for the Touareg TDI V6, or 210kW/600Nm for the Touareg TDI V6 S.

Considering the curves and contours on the body of any Ford from that era, you can’t fault the job he’s done. Ian then handed the reins over to Adam, who sprayed the flawless panels in PPG ‘Root Beer’ brown paint — a remarkably subtle colour, almost black, that reveals a deep shade of metallic bronze-tinged brown under certain light. “I had the lights and everything I was going to use,”Dave mentions, “and I just ditched it all and got new items — even the grille; the grille that came with it was damaged, and I had thought Ian would be able to fix it. I managed to find a genuine old grille in good condition out of the States — very hard to find, but I got it off a guy who deals just in 1940 parts, and had it rechromed.” The motor that escalated the build to this level was built upon a Ford Performance Boss short block, and done locally by Gary Bogaart. As Dave wanted everything to look at home in the vintage engine bay, the fuel injection was taken care of with a four-barrel throttle body as part of a Holley EFI kit sourced from abroad. To ensure Dave could also get his power steering and air conditioning, a full Vintage Air Front Runner accessory drive was fitted; it included the alternator, power-steering pump, air-con compressor, and complete mounting bracket and serpentine belt set-up.

Raglan Rally of the Coast BEST KNOWN FOR ITS SURF BEACHES, ON THE WEEKEND OF 13 OCTOBER RAGLAN PLAYED HOST TO AN ALTOGETHER DIFFERENT SPORT WITH THE FINAL ROUND OF THE NEW ZEALAND RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP

T

he field of 72 cars included the likes of Hayden Paddon, Greg Murphy, and longtime rally driver Neil Allport. Although Paddon secured the championship in the Coromandel in round five of the series, second and third places were still up for grabs. Raglan’s one-day event took in 177 kilometres of special stages with the first of the eight stages starting on the gravel roads just north of Raglan where the overnight rain had dampened the roads, with mud and water still prevalent in several places. First on the road was Hayden Paddon, and although he was effectively the gravel sweeper, still put in a blinding run to win all of the morning stages. However, Paddon pulled in to the midday service park with a driveline fault, meaning that the team had

32

Auto Channel Issue #8 November 2018

to effectively nurse the Hyundai i20 AP4 to the finish. The afternoon’s running took place on the southern Raglan roads, including the infamous Whaanga Coast, in much drier conditions. Once again it was a clean sweep for Paddon despite the driveline issue. “We had to take it relatively easy, and kept our fingers and toes crossed to the end of the last stage, which made it exciting. Our team did a really great job to keep the car going, and we made little repairs as we went along — too many more stages and we might have been in trouble. Once again, a big team effort is what got the car over the line,” said Paddon. He eventually went on to finish more than five minutes ahead of second placing Ben Hunt and Tony Rawstorn in the Subaru WRX STi. The pair found the afternoon slightly more challenging, having to

overcome various niggling issues, but still managed to hold their second place, if only by just two seconds, with Raana Horan and co-driver Michael Conor placing third in their Skoda Fabia R5. Horan, in his first full season drove consistently, picking up top-six finishes in each stage. Holden Barina AP4 driver Greg Murphy spent the day trading places with fellow Holden driver Josh Marsden. Along with the goal of beating ‘The Murph’, Marsden was also aiming to finish the season in third place, which he achieved with his sixth place finish. As for Murph, he eventually finished down in 31st position. The full list of winners can be viewed on the NZ Rally Championship website. The championship will kick off again next year with the Otago Rally in April as the first of six events.

Mercedes-Benz announces second ‘Express Service’ retailer in Auckland MERCEDES-BENZ AUCKLAND HAS ADDED ‘EXPRESS SERVICING’ TO ITS NEWMARKET-BASED RETAILER FOLLOWING THE SYSTEM’S SUCCESSFUL DEPLOYMENT AT MERCEDES-BENZ NORTH SHORE

M

ercedes-Benz recently introduced Express Servicing: a new concept that provides customers with a fully premium servicing experience. Dedicated workshop space and specially trained staff members ensure that customers can minimise the downtime associated with routine vehicle maintenance, with an ‘A’ service possible in as little as 60 minutes. The new facility is designed to maximise convenience and comfort. Customers are able to use the facility’s lounge to relax, work or look at new Mercedes-Benz models while they wait. Ben Giffin, General Manager, Mercedes-Benz Cars New Zealand believes that, following the opening of Mercedes-Benz Auckland’s flagship AMG Performance Centre as part of the Newmarket property, the new addition of the Express Servicing option to the retailer demonstrates the brand’s commitment to first-rate service and facilities for its customers. “We understand that finding the time for vehicle maintenance can prove to be difficult for some of our customers,” he says. “We have listened to this feedback and are excited to be rolling out this new initiative that will provide faster factory scheduled servicing while customers

relax in our lounge.” The service is available for all Mercedes-Benz models and maintains the same level of workmanship expected from the brand by its customers. All Express Services also include a comprehensive multi-point safety inspection and complimentary groom to ensure customer

vehicles are both operating at and looking their best. Express Servicing is now available for MercedesBenz North Shore and Mercedes-Benz Auckland customers. Pricing for Express Servicing varies for each model.

Monroe Intelligent Suspension system confirmed for new Volvo XC40 THE ALL-NEW 2018 VOLVO XC40 COMPACT CROSSOVER SUV FEATURES TENNECO’S CVSAE ADAPTIVE SUSPENSION TECHNOLOGY FROM ITS MONROE INTELLIGENT SUSPENSION PORTFOLIO

O

riginal Equipment and aftermarket shock absorber brand, Monroe, has announced that another premium European vehicle is to be equipped with Monroe Intelligent Suspension technology. The all-new 2018 Volvo XC40 Compact Crossover SUV features Tenneco’s CVSAe adaptive suspension technology from its Monroe Intelligent Suspension portfolio. Tenneco is the parent company of Monroe. The Tenneco CVSAe semi-active suspension technology continuously senses road and driving conditions and independently adjusts damping levels in real time to provide superior comfort. To date, more than 40 vehicles have adopted Monroe’s CVSe system since it launched. Tenneco says the system improves handling and provides for enhanced road safety – primary design cornerstones to which Volvo has established its global reputation over many decades. Each electronically-controlled Monroe shock absorber connects to a central ECU, which can

realign damping settings every 10 milliseconds based on sensor inputs monitoring wheel assembly acceleration, body displacement and steering angle. An externally mounted electronic valve connects to the vehicle’s driving mode control, giving drivers the ability to select damping settings that best suit their requirements. Like other technologies from the Monroe Intelligent Suspension portfolio, Tenneco says that CVSAe offers a highly tuneable suspension solution that delivers optimal control, comfort and road-holding capabilities under a variety of driving conditions. Volvo’s XC60 mid-size and XC90 full-size SUV models also feature Tenneco’s CVSAe suspension system. By developing world leading Monroe suspension technology to international vehicle manufacturers on brand new models, Tenneco says that many benefits of such technical development flow directly to the global automotive aftermarket. The Monroe aftermarket ride performance product range is available from suspension specialists and parts retailers across Australia and New Zealand.

ord New Zealand has been one of Beach Hop’s major sponsors since 2011, and the organizers source a suitable pre1972 Ford as our prize vehicle each year. “We’ve had over 30 vehicles we’ve worked our magic on over the years, so it’s always a challenge to come up with something different,” says Graeme. “We’ve never had a Galaxie before and know how popular they now are, so the search for a suitable vehicle started after Repco Beach Hop 18. “This 1967 Ford Galaxie 500 is powered by a FE390 big block engine and was imported to

New Zealand in November 2017 and complied for registration. It has a three-stage automatic transmission and 9” rear end.” Graeme says the plan is to work some Beach Hop magic on the car and showcase products from the hugely popular event’s sponsors. “New mag wheels and Falken tyres from Mag & Turbo in Tauranga and lowered suspension are on the menu. The paint will be midnight blue pearl thanks to Smits Group. “A new interior and lots of bling for the engine bay will ensure the Galaxie will be a prize you’ll want to win at Repco Beach Hop 19,” he says.
