Delkor stop-start battery warranties extended

PROVEN IN SERVICE, DELKOR HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON ITS EFB BATTERIES FROM 18 MONTHS TO 24 MONTHS, AND DOUBLED IT FROM 18 TO 36 MONTHS ON ITS AGM BATTERIES

Stop-Start, also known as Idle Stop-Start (ISS) is a technology commonly found in modern vehicles. The characteristic feature of Stop-Start technology is its ability to reduce a vehicle’s fuel consumption and emissions by switching the engine off while the vehicle is stopped. This innovative technology was introduced to be beneficial for both the planet and the wallet but it demands superior battery technology to handle the massively increased demand for cranking power.

These vehicles will start the engine approximately 16,000 times more per annum (based on average CBD travel of 15,000km) than an average car and therefore require a battery which is capable of handling these high power demands.

The award-winning range of Delkor AGM and EFB automotive batteries are designed specifically to support the demands of Stop-Start vehicles.

Modern vehicles with Stop-Start systems will detect when the vehicle is not moving and turn off the engine to reduce unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption. Stop-Start technology is particularly beneficial in instances where the vehicle is stopped at traffic lights as it eliminates the unnecessary idling of the engine while waiting for the green light. In the same scenario, the engine in vehicles without Stop-Start technology would continue to idle, wasting fuel, and emitting pollution into the atmosphere.

Vehicles with Stop-Start systems require a specific Stop-Start battery. Conventional batteries are not suitable for such vehicles and attempting to use one would cause premature battery failure. Stop-Start batteries are specially designed to handle the constant cycling and frequent, high power bursts which are characteristic of Stop-Start systems. In addition to the demand for cranking amps, when the engine is switched off, the battery must continue to power all the other electrical components of the vehicle, including the headlights, radio, air conditioner, and wipers, and also deliver the power to start the engine when required.

Delkor Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are ideal for premium petrol and diesel Stop-Start vehicles with high electrical demands. Delkor AGM batteries are designed with patented PowerFrame grid technology which provides superior and consistent starting performance with up to 70 per cent better electrical flow than other grid technologies in the market.

Delkor Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB) are designed to perform in vehicles where an EFB has been specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Many manufacturers continue to specify EFBs as they are a cost-effective, high-performing battery specifically developed for Stop-Start applications.

These Stop-Start vehicles require a battery which can support the repeated demand for engine cranking power while at a partial state of charge. Delkor EFB batteries also benefit from Delkor’s PowerFrame grid technology, designed to improve dynamic charge acceptance. As Stop-Start draws more deeply into a battery’s reserves, the ability to accept high-charging currents to restore used capacity fast is critical to enabling the fuel saving abilities of Stop-Start technology. Similar to AGM batteries, EFB batteries are also built to resist corrosion which is the number one cause of car battery failure.

Clarios, the manufacturer of Delkor batteries, is an award-winning company that continuously strives to meet the growing demand for superior battery performance and durability by investing in world leading technology. Its patented PowerFrame technology and other industry leading technology advances continue to make Delkor EFB and AGM passenger vehicle batteries a top choice for consumers.

Delkor’s success in this field has been recognised in the prestigious Quality Excellence Award in the Top Quality Automotive Batteries category awarded by the Korean Standard Association, which it has won for 16 consecutive years. The Korean Standard Quality Excellence Index (KS-QEI) is Korea’s only comprehensive index of consumer satisfaction and expert evaluation.

The association surveys consumers and industry experts on their satisfaction and experience with different products and services and measures results against two indices — Usage Quality Index and Emotional Quality Index. The Usage Quality Index is based on performance, reliability, durability, stability, usability, and accessibility whereas the Emotional Quality Index is based on brand image and brand awareness.

While ISS technology has significantly increased the demands placed on a vehicle’s battery, consumer expectations regarding battery service life have not changed. For consumer peace of mind, Delkor has recently extended the warranty period on its EFB and AGM batteries in ISS passenger vehicles. The warranty period of Delkor EFB batteries has been increased from 18 months to 24 months, while the warranty for AGM batteries has been increased from 18 months to 36 months. This increase in warranty periods is a further testament to the quality of Delkor batteries.

The award-winning range of Delkor AGM and EFB batteries are available exclusively at R&J Batteries. R&J Batteries is one of the fastest growing battery distributors in the Australasian region with four branches in New Zealand, in Wiri, Christchurch, Hamilton, and Albany, plus 23 branches across Australia.

Diagnosing a repeat fuel system fault

FUEL PUMPS ARE NO LONGER SIMPLE AND REQUIRE A SIMILAR DIAGNOSTIC APPROACH TO OTHER ELECTRO-MECHANICAL SYSTEMS

Without fuel, there is no go. The fuel pump serves as one of the most important parts in the operation of any vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine. Fuel pumps have come a long way from basic mechanical-driven systems to the high-pressure electric pumps we see today. Not only have the pumps changed, the technology that controls them has evolved significantly over the years.

Modern vehicles often use two-stage pumps and while a no-fuel fault in a modern vehicle could well relate to mechanical components of the pump itself, there are a wide array of connectors, relays, control units and circuitry that are also at risk of failure.

Corrosion caused by moisture ingress into a connector assembly is a common cause of a nostart fault. Since it is harder for moisture to get out of a connector once it has got in, only dismantling, drying and removing the corrosion will restore the connection and fix the fault.

These bad connections are not confined to the fuel pump electrical power and control circuits. They can also occur at ground or earth points. Unfortunately, often these poor connections can only be determined by inspection of the connector itself which involves removing it, cleaning and reinstalling it.

It’s important to understand that what appears to be repeat fuel pump failure may really be a failure of the electrical connections, or one of the many related components in the system. In short, whenever a fuel pump is removed, all electrical connectors should be checked for damage or corrosion, and repaired or replaced as necessary.
