ack in 1962, we could leave our grocery shopping list with the local IGA grocer, and he would duly deliver the groceries. With husbands travelling to work in the family car, women were isolated and had to walk to the local shops. Posties would blow their whistle the moment that the mail was placed in our box. Milk was delivered to our doorstep daily and so was our bread, which was placed in our special bread bin on our small back porch. Once a week, fish sales (and whitebait when in season) and the ice-cream cart would travel down our street — Mr Whippy’s creamfreeze van still parades our street in 2018! After 6pm, we would watch television on our new big-console AWA 26-inch television — black and white, of course. We were granted a non-reviewable, three-per-cent-interest State Advances loan to buy our new L-shaped red crocodile-brick home. Section prices in this area were around £800 ($1600), while these new homes ranged from £2900 ($5609) to £3400 ($6800).
Sixties hard cases Over the years, there have been many characters from Christchurch, the best known nationwide being ‘The Wizard’ (Ian Brackenbury Channell). Then there was the Chinese chap that always dressed in a Scottish kilt. He caught the bus into town on Shirley Road and just walked around the areas of the Cathedral and Victoria Squares on warm days for a couple of hours, then bussed
back home. Another entertaining character was ‘the Birdman’ — a tall gentleman, who always wore dark glasses. Maybe he was born with below average eyesight. Why was he known as ‘the Birdman’? He wore a large hat and overcoat while he hand-fed the seagulls in Cathedral Square. It was common to see seagulls perched on his head, via his big hat.
Ice Cream Charlie and The Latimer Pie Cart A real Christchurch icon was ‘Ice Cream Charlie’, with his large pink-andcream ice-cream purpose-built cart, he would always park in the same spot each day. This was in the picturesque park of Victoria Square in Armagh Street opposite Hay’s department store (now there’s an old established company going decades back). I remember Ice Cream Charlie’s van so well, partly because of its 1937–1938 Ford Ten wheels and hubcaps — and because of the way ‘Charlie’ served his ice cream. Now, how can I describe that? It was with a continuous swaying motion, like he was on a boat in rough seas — that’s the best way I can describe it. It was all part of what he, his product, and his colourful van were known for. Then there was the pie cart. Only one that I can recall. Always parked in Latimer Square, and simply known as ‘The Latimer Pie Cart’. It was an eight-wheeler and painted in white and green. The three Ps — ‘pea’, ‘pie’, and ‘pud’, served with a slice or three of beetroot. That’s about all you could buy, apart from a cup of tea, which would be served in a thick white porcelain New Zealand Rail–type cup. themotorhood.com | New Zealand Classic Car

his magnificent event was a romantic mix, from A Drive of the Lutyens — named for the architect Edwin Landseer Lutyens (1869–1944), who laid out so much of the administrative heart of the new city — to black-tie dinners at the homes of Maharajahs; traditional and unique dance entertainment from the regions of India; the National Railway Museum; motorbikes and scooters; culinary delights — such as Hyderabadi dum biryani, macher jhol, rogan josh, sorpotel, and meen vevicathu (do not question, just eat!) — and, last but certainly not least, well over 100 veteran, Edwardian, vintage, and classic cars, including international entrants from the US, Australia, the Seychelles, Italy, and the UK. As well as the international entrants held in such high regard locally, there were participants from Delhi, Kanpur, Jaipur, Udaipur, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. On the morning of Saturday February 17, all gathered at the landmark India Gate, Lutyens’ architectural memorial — one of 66 designed by him, including the Cenotaph in London. As the vehicles arrived at the memorial to those who fell in the Great War and the third Anglo-Afghan War between 1914 and 1921, so to did the crowd for what was to be the start of one of the largest classic car rallies ever seen in Asia. Flagged off by the posse of dignitaries at the start line, the parade through Lutyens’ Delhi made its sometimes-disorderly way through the Inner Circle Road, then along Raj Path (or King’s Way) Road; Vijay Chowk; South Avenue Road; past the Nehru Memorial Museum on the Shanti Path Road; the Panchsheel Marg (marg is the Hindi/Punjabi word for road); and, ultimately, 36 hectic kilometres later (traffic in Delhi needs to be experienced to be believed) to the Ambience Greens Golf Course in nearby Guragon.
