’ll admit that large, luxurious, powerful coupés always seemed pointless to me. If you’re going to get a big car, it might as well have four doors. If you’re going to get a fast car, it might as well be small and agile. If you’re going to get a luxurious car, it might as well be a Range Rover (who can beat luxury and being atop a mountain, right?). Like most kids growing up pining after cars, I never felt the need for luxury; I had the need for speed. I wanted lightweight Ferraris, stripped-out Porsches, track-bred Lamborghinis, eye-popping TVRs, and low and lithe Lotuses. Now, not so much. Sure, I still want speed, but I also want comfort. And I want a good stereo system and a smooth ride and adaptive cruise control and 22 speakers and perforated leather. And after a couple of days in the new Continental GT, I now know that I need air-conditioned seats, a wafty two-tonne ride, and a six-litre twinturbo W12 engine. Wants and needs have become blurred.

Not so humble beginnings When Bentley released its all-new Continental GT in 2003, you could almost hear the jet set coughing up their cucumber sandwiches and dropping their monocles. What was this thing? Gone were the boxy angles of the previous GT; in was something resembling a frog on gaudy wheels with a VW interior. It took a buyer with a strong stomach to fork out the $350K-plus for the Continental GT back then, and Bentley began to worry. As it turned out, it needn’t have, as there were plenty of people about with heavy enough wallets and matching titanium tummies to put up with what was arguably the ugliest car ever built by Bentley. Gone were the traditional elements left over from the coach-building glory days; in were modern lines and a car that looked to be putting sport and questionable styling ahead of luxury and refinement. Many saw the GT as outside Bentley’s standard modus operandi.

he idea hit me like a thunderbolt out of nowhere. Huddling in front of heaters for weeks, with torrential rains and cyclone winds battering the homestead, was getting too much. A tropical excursion was obviously called for. My lovely lady had been making overtures on this theme for several weeks. Not that quick on the uptake, or legendary with my lateral thinking, this multitasking marvel of a bloke had not seen opportunity when it was in his face, so to speak.
Until now, that is, not being a resort sort of fella, I’d been dragging the chain on this proposition. Then it whacked me between the eyeballs. Road trip! To be undertaken in the hot climes of Queensland, and everyone’s a winner. Mary-Anne, my sweet lass, is a heat junkie and a sworn refugee from winter. She also is sucker for a road trip. Throwing in memories of high-school years, living on the Gold Coast in the early ’70s, there was a cataclysmic burst of excitement. Not rocket science, when ya think about it really!
