TONY HILL’S EVO MAY HAVE STARTED AS A HACK, BUT, 18 MONTHS LATER, IT HAS MORPHED INTO ONE OF THE BEST TOUGH STREET CARS THIS COUNTRY HAS EVER SEEN t was only ever meant to be a hack,” remarks Tony Hill as the NZPC team does its best not to drop drool all over the billet-draped engine bay in his Evo I. By definition, a ‘hack’ is a car that you don’t care for; it’s often rough around the edges; mechanical symphony is null and void; and, therefore, your right foot can often be found buried so deep into the floorpan that the little orange needle taps so far around the gauge that it bends. But this car, my friends, is so far along the spectrum from hack that it’s hard to believe that that was ever Tony’s prerogative. But the funny thing with this Evo is

that it was those very actions that resulted in the car going under the knife in the first place. Tony was only a week into owning (and thrashing) the Evo, having already posted a personal best (PB) of 13.4 seconds at a round of Night Speed Drag Wars, when some more ‘closed-road’ driving really had the Evo hauling arse. However, it would transpire that this was because the rev limiter was non-existent. “I was just pushing it pretty hard, thinking, man, this is going great,” Tony recalls. But the excessive revs meant bad things were actually going on internally, and that first taste of the thrash life had actually bent valves in the head.

ariety is the spice of life, and diversity always makes things interesting, so, when there’s an event that draws cars out of the woodwork that you wouldn’t otherwise see, you know that we’re all over it like a dog with a bone. And that’s exactly why each year we make the annual pilgrimage to Feilding in the Manawatu, for the V 4&Rotary North Island Jamboree. Those who have never had the pleasure of attending can be excused for scratching their heads at how barred up everyone gets over the seemingly small-town show. The secret behind the weekend’s proceedings can be found in Manfeild Circuit’s doublehitter treat of track and show hall in one place. It also doesn’t hurt that Feilding is something of a midway point between Wellington and Taranaki, handy to the car scenes of Palmy and every place in between — hell, there were even cameos from cars based in the Far North and a handful from down south, too.

Jambo guarantees that you’ll be pining over cars and meeting people that you’ll only find on a single weekend before going back into hibernation until next year, and that’s what makes the event a calendar staple for anyone within the scene — it’s just too good to pass up. Saturday was an all-track affair in collaboration with Chrome Expression Session that saw a massive collection of cars let loose on the track for cruise-with-your-mates sessions mixed in with a touch of drifting and speed runs. Line up an Evo in your Skyline five-up and find out real quick who’s going to be tearing up at the end of the back straight, or simply let that gate sing the song of turbos for the enjoyment of the crowd. Whatever you felt the need to get up to — within reason — was permitted, and you could have a full day of seat time if you played your cards right. You’d also be surprised at how many of the cars that had pedalled the track hard for the better part of the day were hit with a quick

Untamed Motorsport member David ‘Adies’ Adlington won the award for Best Drag Style car after peddling his ‘EXAQTR’ Evo around the circuit and taking part in the roll racing drags — it’s on the cusp of running 10s, too, with a current personal best (PB) of 11.01 seconds at 127mph (204kph)

rt, by its very nature, is divisive. Whichever form it takes, the result is inevitably subjective, with beauty being very much in the eye of the beholder. As the art form deviates from the traditional, approaching the fringes polarizes opinion further. It distances the spectator with a more classical bent and, conversely, attracts a small-but-dedicated core of followers.

Tattooing represents maybe one of the more prominent love-it-or-hate-it art forms. With roots embedded in counter-culture, even today the art form suffers from longheld prejudices, particularly in the mainstream eye. It’s an arguably badass aesthetic, which, of course, has drawn legions of fans, not least Matt Jordan, the owner of possibly the most distinctive 1980s Toyota in the country. However, Matt’s dedication to the human body as a

canvas extends beyond mere enthusiasm. With a reputation built on some of the most realistic body art on the planet, he’s a man of international notoriety and demand. So, when it came time to realize his ’80s automotive goals, the result was hardly going to be a shrinking violet. Beneath the striking bodywork and complex livery lie the bones of a 1987 Toyota Corona Mark II hardtop — chassis code GX71, to be exact. It’s the evolution of a long-held infatuation with the boxy silhouettes of 1980s Toyotas, but the choice of the zokusha styling route draws more parallels with Matt’s day job than first impressions may suggest. Descendant of the bosozoku subculture, zokusha (or shakotan) style dates back to the 1950s. In a time of rapid and

regimented economic expansion, bosozoku was — and still is, albeit on a reduced scale — a symbol of rebellion against a mainstream culture. Disenfranchised and seeking identity, early bosozoku youth turned to tuning motorcycles and, later, cars, in outrageous fashion. Noise, colour, and raucous behaviour exemplified their pursuits. The desired effect kicked in — the mainstream all but disowned bosozoku, and, in some cases, the subculture became a recruiting ground for Yakuza. The style evolved through the years, and, although, in the present day, numbers are on the decline, there’s still a certain kind of reverence held in Japan for these kinds of builds. For Matt, embarking on something fairly unique on Kiwi shores seemed a natural extension of his devil-may-care younger
