fast they are actually going, and, in some cases, to witness them spin at frightening speeds. There were several spins this year, and even a couple of serious accidents on the racecourse. Ironically, a spectator was killed in a head-on crash in the ‘spectator’ driving lane, which was a real downer. My favourite spot is the start line on the long course. Three lanes of cars race down the course, one at a time, and you stand right there as the drivers are strapped into the cars and prepared for racing. The start-line officials check that all is good before signalling for the push cars to move the race car down the track until it’s under its own power. This year, the race was on to be the first to break 500mph, with several teams in contention. Standing just a couple of metres from George Poteet’s ‘Speed Demon’ as he was buckled

in, fired up the engine, then took off, disappearing over the horizon as he changed to second gear, was incredible! Then it was time to huddle around the radio to listen to his speed at each mile — a whopping 453mph at the five-mile mark! Speed Week has been troubled by wet weather and a shrinking salt surface over the past few years, so it was a relief to get another event completed. For a couple of days, the salt was slippery and the winds got up in the afternoon, ending the racing. But that’s not always a bad thing — it just means that it’s time to head into Wendover for the night-time car show at Nugget Casino, where everyone has a beer and checks out the cars. Speed Week isn’t for everyone, but you should put it on your bucket list. Who knows, you may just end up with salt fever!

COOL THINGS THAT WE DISCOVERED ON THE INTERNET THIS MONTH

EXORCISING THE DEMON

BUILDING THE BEAST Steve Clare is one talented man, and that’s probably for the best, because not many others could decide to build a mid-engined V8powered Mini ute and pull it off. Steve, however, tucked right into it, doing almost all the work in his own garage, and with his own two hands. We’ve got some build photos so you can understand just how crazy a transformation this was. Search ‘Steve Clare’ on The Motorhood to check it out.

FAT SKIDS Love them, hate them, or plain don’t get them — it doesn’t really matter, because the humble burnout is cementing itself as part of the local car scene, as New Zealand

follows Australia’s lead. No further proof of that is required than the recent New Zealand Burnout Championship, which saw Aussie legends Andrew Lynch’s ‘LYNCHY’ Corolla and Sam Surace’s ‘MADSAM’ Capri invited to show what it’s all about. We’ve got more of the high-revving, tyre-blowing action online — just search ‘NZBC’ on The Motorhood.

We recently stumbled across a very cool video centred on a Dodge Demon — a Dodge Demon driven by Rhys Millen, around a deserted city. Sponsored by Pennzoil, this is far from a cheesy product plug, with beautiful cinematography reminiscent of car-centric action films such as Driver. To check out the tyre-shredding action, punctuated by plentiful supercharger whine, search ‘Exorcising the Demon’ on YouTube. Then, if you want to see how it was all done, search ‘Unleashing Unprecedented Power’ for a behindthe-scenes clip.

FOR SHOW Chrome don’t get ya home, but it does put on a hell of a show. As you’ll have seen earlier in this issue, Prowear Chrome Expression Session 2017 was a damn good show. We’ve got a decent photo gallery online in case you finished the article wanting more. Just search ‘Chrome 2017’.
