he exact number you can think of is probably somewhere around zero, zip, nada, or none … and there’s a damn good reason for that. You see, to pull off such a concoction of mechanical mayhem takes a special breed, a person not afraid to risk everything in the quest to create something truly unique.
In the case of this 1964 Ford Galaxie, that person is Justin Walker. Just like almost every other featurecar owner, Justin never intended to go quite this far with the project. As we all know, though, once you start pulling the thread, things just keep on unravelling, especially when that thread is attached to a freshly imported car.

Event Report
Caroline Bay Rock and Hop 2018
THE CAROLINE BAY ROCK AND HOP MAY BE A RELATIVELY NEW EVENT, BUT, CLEARLY, IT’S DESTINED FOR GREAT THINGS! WORDS AND PHOTOS: ROD DUNN

ast year, Timaru gained a new event in the Caroline Bay Rock and Hop, and it’s a bloody good one. A three-day celebration of 1950s and ’60s rock ’n’ roll and allthings retro, it’s a good excuse for a great time. Held down in the seaside domain, there was plenty of space and a beautiful ocean view — the perfect location for a weekend event.
But it’s not just an event for the sake of it, as the Caroline Bay Rock and Hop is a major fundraiser for South Canterbury Hospice. Event organizers were happy when car numbers topped 600 last year, and expectations were high again this year. Even with those high hopes, though, you can imagine how stoked the organizers must have been when car entry numbers hit 932.
No matter what large show you attend throughout the country, there is no denying the popularity of retro pin-up shows. Some of the ladies go to great lengths to look the part, and the Caroline Bay Hop was no exception, with quite a number of ladies showing their stuff on Saturday afternoon

Kicking off the festivities this year was the Friday-morning cruise out to Geraldine. Leaving Caroline Bay at around 11am, a large number of vehicles headed out to the small rural town nestled in the foothills of the Southern Alps. With its renowned art scene and numerous galleries, the destination of Geraldine made for a splendid way to spend the first part of the Rock and Hop.
Another cruise was held later on in the evening, this time seeing a huge convoy of vehicles head down the main street of Timaru in front of large crowds lining the footpaths. The cars then moved out to Temuka, where the main street was closed to allow for the classics and rods to park up,
signalling the close of a great day for all involved. Saturday is the big day, though, and this year it was like one huge retro gala, with the voluminous car display flanked by stalls, a rock ’n’ roll extravaganza, bar, competitions, and the retro Best Dressed show.
A very popular section of the show was the retro caravan area, with many of them hitched behind similarly themed classics

e all have our own idea of the perfect car or reasons behind why we build a car a certain way. Lana Padget is no different, and, right from the very start, she was determined to build her ’71 XY Falcon the way that she wanted — not how others thought it should be. Her husband Anthony had just rebuilt his ’71 HQ Monaro GTS, and Lana had asked if he could paint the diff or brake drums pink, to which he replied, “My car is original; you buy a Falcon and do whatever you want to that”, so Lana took his advice and did just that. The project began shortly afterwards with the purchase of an XY sedan, but it was soon discovered that way more work would be required

than first thought, so a donor car was added to the fleet. With two XYs in the garage, it was a matter of mixing and matching the best parts from each. Her vision was for a pink car — “My car, done my way,” as she puts it — and pictures of a Falcon were coloured in several different shades of pink before Lana settled on her final choice. Another key element Lana wanted was a dashmounted shifter to avoid kicking a floor-mounted one or having to straddle it while sitting on the beach seat. A custom fibreglass dash was decided on as the best way to do this. As with any project of this size, Lana’s build would never got off the ground without the hard work and dedication of certain key people. In this case, it
