1970 Plymouth Cuda
IT’S BEEN OUT OF SIGHT FOR SO LONG THAT IT’S BECOME KNOWN AS A BIT OF A MYTHICAL LEGEND, BUT NOW, AFTER A LONG HIATUS, BRENDON TORDOFF’S ‘SIKFSH’ IS BACK, AND IT’S BETTER THAN EVER!

ecognize the number plate? You should — well, at least if you’re a long-time reader, as, way back in Issue No. 23, this same car graced the cover of NZV8 wearing it. While we’re not here to reminisce, in this instance, that’s where the story of this epic rebuild begins. You see, as cool as the car was back then — and it was at the pointy end of the scene — in essence, Brendon had only added his own cosmetic touches to a freshly imported car, and it wasn’t long before the cracks began to show. Some initial digging led Brendon to accept that one rear quarter on the 1970 Plymouth Cuda would need
to be replaced, having been poorly repaired previously. For this, he shipped the car to Christchurch to a fellow Cuda enthusiast and panel shop owner. And, although Brendon was already less than thrilled about having to make such a major repair to the car, he was soon in for far more upset. As he recalls, “Once we removed that one guard, the games began!” — realizing that the previous owners had spent some serious money to hide all the issues instead of actually fixing them. It was at this point that the call was made to media-blast the whole car to see what was going on. This revealed the real issues — lots of them.

event report
CRC Speedshow 2018
WORDS: CONNAL GRACE PHOTOS: ADAM CROY
CRC SPEEDSHOW IS KNOWN FOR HARBOURING A DECENT ATTRACTION OR TWO, AND WE’VE MADE IT OUR MISSION TO BRING THEM TO YOU elieve it or not, we don’t like describing shows as ‘having something for everyone’ — it’s a safe, catch-all phrase that tends to be used in lieu of any defining characteristics that the event in question may possess. So, with that being said, we’re going to let ourselves off the hook here, because it truly is the best way to describe the annual automotive extravaganza that is CRC Speedshow.
Pursuant to last year’s announcement that CRC Speedshow was changing ownership, from Ross and Brenda Prevette to Terry Nicholas and Bruce Anderson, any heart palpitations were soon smoothed with the assurance that Ross and Brenda had contracted to run this year’s event. As such, the plan for 2018 was far from a complete overhaul; rather, a gentle massage of the existing structure — if it ain’t broke, and all … But, for all the automotive abundance
Speedshow offers, we can’t really lie about the fact that it’s the Teng Tools Grand National Rod and Custom Show that we’re really interested in — consistently regarded as one of the best rod and custom shows in the country. Want to see why? You’ve come to the right place. Don’t worry if you want more than custom builds, though, as we went through the whole show to bring you the highlights reel over the next few pages.
2018 DODGE CHALLENGER SRT DEMON
The folks at Classic Cover Insurance had something pretty neat with which to reel in the power freaks this year. What can we say about the 2018 Dodge Demon that you don’t already know? Not a lot, really … it’s quite fast, thanks to a supercharged 6.2-litre Hemi. But this is so much more than just a warmed-up Hellcat — the standard two-step ignition and transbrake mean that it’s a no-nonsense drag-ready street car, but Dodge has engineered it specifically for duty. This is far from a cynical Moparsponsored cash-grab, with nothing more than big numbers. It’s got those too, though — how do 840hp and 770lb·ft sound? Standard quarter-mile in 9.65 seconds at 140mph? … Yeah, it’s pretty cool.

IGOR SUTICH — 1965 FORD MUSTANG Ah, Matamata, you’ve done it again. Yes, you’re looking at another Matamata Panelworks creation. The car features an amazing array of custom sheet-metal work, both inside and out, and has recently been sprayed in a one-off colour by the Matamata Paintworks team. With a Roush 427IR engine, topped with a polished eight-stack injection set-up, controlled by FAST XFI 2.0 electronics, the engine bay is every bit as impressive as the exterior — and that was no small task. The underside features the top-of-the-line RRS componentry we’ve come to expect in a build such as this, including rackand-pinion steering coilover front end and a three-link rear, not to mention the obligatory big brakes. Sitting atop US Mags Santa Cruz wheels shod in 235/35R19 and 305/30R19 rubber, the car looks as if it could go headto-head on a world stage very shortly.
PETER AND DELILAH SCHIMANSKI — 1969 HOLDEN HT MONARO
When the Schimanskis picked up a pink and black Monaro 10-odd years ago, this probably wasn’t what they had in mind. But Peter did have a vision of it all one colour, built in a pro-street style, and, after taking it to Kruzin Kustoms, a plan eventuated that would evolve into the street monster you see here. The Heidts independent front and McDonald Bros four-link rear are united in an overly strengthened chassis, while the body has been given the works — raised floorpan, reshaped rear-wheel arches, shaved badges, custom rear roll pan, and that insane Pro Stock–style roll cage. And Peter achieved his vision through PPG custom white paint with satin black accents, not to mention those rad Billet Specialties Street Lite rims. But never mind all that — more to the point, power is delivered by the bucketload, care of an injected and 8-71-blown 540ci big block backed by a Tremec TKO 600 five-speed. We won’t give everything away here, though — you can wait until the next issue for that!
