ometimes you find yourself in the position of having to grow up, be an adult, and make a few sacrifices. That was the very situation Peter Schimanski and his then-girlfriend now-wife Delilah faced a few years back. Pete owned a genuine 1969 Bathurst Monaro until family life unexpectedly got in the way, as it often does, at the worst possible time. Finding themselves with an extra mouth to feed, the Monaro was sold and family life commenced for the Schimanskis. However, the yearning for another was never far from his mind — “the car, not a kid!” Pete adds. No wonder, as he says there’s a good chance that their son was conceived on the back seat of that very Monaro …
Fast forward a few years, and, while browsing internet auction sites, Pete stumbled across another Monaro located in Invercargill. It was a runner, and was just what he wanted. The Aussie icon had been imported into New Zealand in 1971, and, while it was originally a six, it had, at some stage in its life, been subjected to a transplant with the correct number of cylinders — a 350ci small block. This infusion of grunt also came with a respray in a distinct orchid hue topped off with some sweet black go-fast stripes. For the next six months, Pete and Delilah drove the Monaro at every opportunity they had, but, as is quite often the case, the desire to go faster reared its ugly head.

Prowear Chrome Expression Session 2018
THE CHROME EXPRESSION SESSION HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MASSIVE ON-TRACK AUTOMOTIVE PARTY, AND THIS YEAR DEFINITELY DELIVERED THE GOODS WORDS: CONNAL GRACE PHOTOS: RICHARD OPIE / JAMIE WALDEN
s it a Kiwi thing, or just something that car enthusiasts are inherently prone to? You know, the other side of the ‘she’ll be right’ coin that sees us frantically spannering in the days leading up to an event — the date of which is known well in advance and set as an achievable deadline. Whatever the cause of this phenomenon, the organizers of Chrome are well aware of it, building the hype for this

year’s Prowear Chrome Expression Session 2018, held over 3–5 August, with the #roadtochrome socialmedia campaign for entrants to document their own journey there. Run by 4&Rotary Promotions, the event has no trouble getting New Zealand’s best and toughest import vehicles in there, but Azhar Bhamji — Mr 4&Rotary himself — has consistently pushed the marketing towards the V8 crowd to get more of us through the gates.
Shipped over from Australia as a dedicated burnout car, Leon Kenny’s ‘TAINTED’ Holden VZ Commodore ute was more than up to the task. Powered by a tunnel-rammed and injected LS2 on E85, he laid down a solid practice skid and was looking good for the competition. But, as the battery died just before he hit the pad for qualifying, the rush to get a jump-starter meant that he forgot to turn the thermo fans on, destroying a radiator hose towards the end of an otherwise-awesome performance. That didn’t stop him from making the Top Five, but he was unable to get it sorted in time, otherwise we’re sure that he’d have given the others a run for their money
The all-inclusive event has evolved somewhat over the years at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park. Moving the drift sessions to the International Circuit extension while keeping the cruising on the original National Circuit allowed both to be run concurrently without worry of collision, in turn allowing more time for everyone to indulge in whatever track activities they were most keen on.
The three-day weekend is the hottest event of its kind in New Zealand, and, with the entire Hampton Downs venue at its disposal, provides endless action for spectators and entrants. As you may know, one of its main attractions are the Drive Your Mates on-track cruise sessions, giving entrants a chance to take their friends, or strangers, out for a fang around the circuit. It’s a very cool feature that makes the event more interactive than
