work is not work w i t h o u t p l ay

Currently I am a Senior studying Industrial Design at Virginia Tech and I am a fabricator of memorable experiences. I believe in the idea of designing for others because I firmly have confidence in the fact that empathy is my greatest strength. Design should be centered not just on the final product but the intent, process, and presentation of it as well. There is immense value to crafting a product but driving its form/function based on research and usability allows for the production of not just aesthetically pleasing forms, but an overall memorable experience. Even if people don’t consciously recognize it, these are the ideals that they appreciate when they interact with any design. Growing up in a military household, I’ve become an expert at 2 things: making new friends and push-ups. Moving from place to place, adapting, getting to know people, and learning people’s backgrounds has taught me that there’s no standard person and we should be designing accordingly. I strive to achieve this through strong design research, ideation, and interaction with the target consumers. Constantly I am reminded of the different experiences that each person carries with them and I work to incorporate that into my designs. To keep me sane

“I do miss a bathtub, where I can sit and luxuriate. Especially if its been cold, or somethings been aching... It’s nice!” “I used to take a bath. That used to be my method of bathing.. But now I prefer a shower, mostly because I don’t think I could get in and out without assistance, like a LOT of assistance.... Like a crane!!” “My legs just don’t work like they used to and when I get in the bathtub, and they don’t cooperate it can be dangerous!”

Through visits to both assisted living facilities and independent senior living spaces, we observed trends in their bathing situations. There were similarities in the way they went about the bathing process, but we realized one important trend. Nobody had

an opportunity to take a bath. Easy Entrance

The double-chamber system allows the user to fill the tub without having to wait inside of it. The doors allow for users with limited mobility to easily enter and exit the tub with minimal physical exertion.

USER TESTING ANTHROPOMETRICS Using anthropometric data to define the components of the bathtub, we created a full scale mock-up to represent the size of the bathtub. The scale of the bathtub and components was very successful.

However, the form made the user feel caged in when they sat down, and the support bars were not structurally stable. This led to reevaluation of form.

reevaluation of form The asymmetrical walls allow an open bathing experience, while also providing stability and support for the user.

pullout perch seat and surface are synonymous slats give the sense of a full surface exploration of symmetry vs nonsymmetry weight differentiates function

The lighter maple wood is used mainly for structure such as the frame and seat. The darker walnut wood is used as an accent to highlight the two places used as light weight-bearing surfaces.

The pullout perch is approximately the same size as the cuts in the seat slats, so it slides smooth and effortlessly.

The dimensions suggest the seat is meant for a single user. It’s intentionally not meant to be comfortable because it serves as a temporary resting place.

The clean, kid-friendly brush

The brush would be 3D printed from a completely compostable filament giving the user flexibility in color combinations of their brush. Customization can give kids a sense of ownership and personal character that is specific to their liking. Kids would manually assemble their brush so they will have a better understanding of how to disassemble and properly dispose of it.
