Reb writes a travel column called “Sleeping Around” for the Toronto Star. But she’ll never forget where she got her start: The Parksville Qualicum Beach News. Having grown up in first Qualicum, then Parksville, Reb drew on her personal expertise in the areas of ice cream eating, mini golfing and aimless beachcombing to write the introductions for each section in this guide. Reb’s intros are followed by a number of short testimonials that our Facebook fans wrote for us as part of a “Travel Tips” contest that Oceanside Tourism ran in November, 2010.

Little Qualicum Falls was a fantastic outing for a family double-date with four preschoolers. We went for a short walk, ooh’d and aaah’d at the falls, then went riverside to a very accessible wading area for the kids. Wow! The water was cold, but we all took turns taking a dip, skipping stones and laughing in the sunshine!

As a resident of Qualicum Beach I feel so privileged to have such a fabulous beach and promenade on my own doorstep, which I enjoy all seasons of the year, with its wellmaintained grassy areas, majestic trees providing shade over picnic tables, spectacular sunsets, and winter storms. Magnificent!

As I walked down the path, I passed immense trees and rambling rivers to reach the jewel of this hike: the Little Qualicum Falls. Watching the water flow into the stream below, I was reminded of the beauty of Vancouver Island. Little Qualicum Falls Park is a not-to-bemissed treasure, on an island full of treasures.

For those who visit Oceanside with their four legged friends, there is a great dog walking park. Take the first exit to Parksville, turn left at the next set of lights (where there are RVs for sale) and look for the entrance to the top bridge trail. Park and bring your puppies to a fantastic, wonderful walk.

DIY foodies can stock up on local products at a farmer’s market, while restaurant addicts have their pick of cuisines ranging from British to SouthEast Asian. And sunset dining is a must, whether it’s a formal seafood meal or a cheeseburger on a bench. We won’t judge.

This fall, a few girlfriends got together for treatments at the Grotto Spa, followed by dinner at the Treetop Tapas & Grill. Dining in robes and slippers was an out-of-the-ordinary, surprisingly comfortable experience that I would highly recommend. The endless Tapas meal we enjoyed was a very special treat – every single tapas was mouthwatering and exquisitely presented!

On a recent trip to Parksville we had the good luck of stumbling upon the Rod & Gun, which first opened in 1895. Unfortunately, the original deal of $1.50 for bed, breakfast and dinner is no longer available, however the breakfast we got was still delicious and a great deal! And who wouldn’t love that sign?

My favourite restaurant in Parksville is at Pacific Shores Resort. The food is delicious and the giant salt water aquarium is fascinating.

I enter “Aquaterre Spa” and am greeted by a curvy tank full of fish swimming in peaceful serenity. I am here for “Cleopatra‘s wrapture”. A granite bubble bath full of rose petals, being drizzled in warm champagne oil and ending with a light snack– I walk out of there feeling like I have just tasted a little piece of “Heaven”.

We stayed an extra day just to catch the local street fair. It was wonderful and I even had my tarot cards read. We also had some Hawaiian snow cones. Our eight year old daughter had a very long conversation with one of the artisans about rocks and jewellery. She loved this. Summer by the Sea Art, jewelry, handcrafted toys, baked goods – you name it, we’ve got it at Parksville’s eclectic Tuesday night market on Craig Street.

The Black Eyed Peas are cool n’ all, but I prefer being serenaded by Qualicum’s town bells while I shop. The cohesive village centre, citizens who offer cheery “hellos” and hourly chimes almost seem transported from England itself. The best part is, this quaint community has put the kibosh on chain stores, making it a haven for locallyowned boutiques and artisans. Busier Parksville is the area’s commercial centre, but you can still find loads of Oceanside originals at the open air Summer by the Sea street market in July and August. And not to be missed, Coombs: home of quirky shops, mountainous ice cream cones and fame obsessed goats who will stop at nothing to infiltrate your photo album. We really enjoy the TOSH Jazz Club Happy Hour on Tuesday afternoons, sipping a glass of wine while listening to old favourites with Jim Kilburn on guitar and Ron Hadley at the piano. It’s always interesting visiting the various studios where you can watch artists and artisans at work. The Grand Prix d’Art is really exciting and into its sixteenth year this summer. It’s a form of race as competing artists from Vancouver Island and Lower Mainland have a three hour time limit within which to complete a street scene from a location assigned by lottery in Qualicum Beach.

Camping by the Ocean

My hubby and I moved to the Island last year from St. Albert, Alberta. For our first ocean camping experience, we decided to visit Rathtrevor campground. It was incredible, best camping trip we’ve ever had! There is nothing better than waking up to the sound of the ocean and lazing the day away on a sandy beach. Thanks Parksville!
