In 2009 when we first saw the old vacant office building on Clifton Terrace – a dark street full of stores with their shutters down – Park Theatre was merely a vision; and one that raised an uncertain eyebrow from many. However with an incredible amount of local support, the theatre now stands as a bustling building open throughout the day, beside our neighbours who all make this street and Finsbury Park an exciting place to live and work. I couldn't be more thrilled to be opening this season with Sir Ian McKellen in Shakespeare, Tolkien, Others & You. For one week only, Sir Ian McKellen is kindly performing to help us fundraise. All proceeds from the higher ticket prices for this show will support our ambitions in presenting affordable, accessible theatre throughout the year. Needing to raise £250,000 annually just to keep our doors open, fundraising remains a vital part of what we do – and I would encourage anyone who can afford to add a donation to their bookings throughout the year to kindly do so. As we are committed to keeping our tickets affordably priced, we can’t cover our costs through the box office alone – but if every patron donated a fiver we’d achieve our annual target. Please do consider this as you look through our season filled with comedy and drama, with faces familiar and new.

As each year passes we look to advance and improve, and this season brings some exciting changes to improve our customer service. Firstly, we have updated our website making it even easier to book your tickets online. Secondly, we have upgraded our telephone booking system and there are now more staff than ever aiming to answer all calls in an average of one minute: we’re having to add a small telephone booking fee to help us deliver this improved level of service, but I’m sure the change will be great news to all those who prefer to book by phone.

Tracing their hidden liaisons over half a century to the present day, Kevin Elyot’s evocative final play conjures a heartbreakingly funny tale of fathers and sons, desire and regret, love and loss, and lives half lived. Elyot was an acclaimed writer for stage and screen, winning the Laurence Olivier and Evening Standard awards for My Night with Reg. His other plays include the Olivier nominated Mouth to Mouth (Royal Court) and The Day I Stood Still (National Theatre). On screen his work includes Christopher and His Kind (BBC), Clapham Junction (Channel 4) and many episodes of Poirot and Marple (ITV).

“There is an unsentimental compassion about Elyot's writing that is deeply affecting, and a sharp observation of contemporary life that is richly comic” The Telegraph

Loot

Written by Joe Orton Directed by Michael Fentiman Casting by Stephen Moore CDG From the producers of Park Theatre sell-out hit The Boys in the Band comes another darkly comic masterpiece: Joe Orton's classic farce Loot. Uproarious slapstick meets dubious morals as two young friends stash the proceeds of a bank robbery in an occupied coffin, attempting to hide their spoils from the attentions of a psychopathic policeman, a gold-digging nurse and a grieving widower. The ensuing black comedy shocked and delighted audiences in equal measure when the play premiered five decades ago, winning the Evening Standard Best Play award.

As a charity that survives on fundraising we are delighted to have the remarkable Sir Ian McKellen headlining our new season with a week of shows to help raise money to support Park Theatre. This really is theatre fundraising at its best – both creative and entertaining. By inviting support through ticket sales, we are able to invest more deeply towards presenting and creating inclusive theatre experiences, on and off stage, through our artistic and creative learning programmes. Thank you, Ian, for this tremendous opportunity. Of course, this isn’t the only way you can support us. There are other ways you can contribute including joining our Park Friends, Naming a Seat or adding a donation to your ticket booking. Every £1 invested in the arts generates a further £2 into the wider community.* In our case, much of that makes its way back into the Finsbury Park area, supporting our

local economy and affirming our role as a neighbourhood theatre. A donation to Park Theatre truly makes a difference. Thank you for your support.

“I love Park Theatre. Small but perfectly formed, it creates the environment for fine work to be done” Miriam Margolyes

The best plays you’ve seen rarely land on a desk performance-ready. Whether Jerusalem, War Horse or our own Madame Rubinstein, they usually take years to develop. But the idea of investing such time and money in a script that may never see the light of day, or simply not end up being the big hit one hoped, is rather unattractive for the commercial producer. More often than not it’s the charity sector that’s the breeding ground for the host of successes that light up the West End and Broadway. At Park Theatre we help develop over twenty new plays a year, working closely with writers to realise the full potential of each script. A key step in the process is a rehearsed reading where the actors read the play script-in-hand. Notable actors participating in rehearsed readings at Park Theatre have included: Brian Cox, Maureen Lipman, Tim PigottSmith, Greta Scacchi, Juliet Stevenson, Tracey Ullman and Greg Wise. Invitees to these events include key industry professionals, plus volunteers (see page 29) and supporters (see page 30), for whom engaging with our work so early on can be a thrilling experience, as well as provide the writer with valuable feedback to shape their next draft.

Daytona, Adult Supervision, An Audience with Jimmy Savile and Dead Sheep – have also enjoyed a further life through publishing deals, tours or West End transfers.

We aim to play a vital role in the theatre ecology and this is just one part of what we do behind the scenes. We are currently positioning ourselves as a key player in developing new writing, producing, directing and acting talent and are reaching further, within all these fields, to reflect the diversity of London on our stages. None of this would be possible without your kind support and vital donations.

Some of the plays have gone on to be produced here. Many – including
