The portrait of Princess Albert de Broglie was completed in 1853 by artist Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres who has portraits many celebrities in his age and once depends for his livelihood on portrait live during his harsh time. Princesse Albert de Broglie was his last commissioned portrait of a female sitter.

Princess Albert de Broglie is renowned for her beauty and elegance among the upper-class society, which can be seen at the first glance from the painting. Ingres depicts a lady with a marble-like skin and black hair with luster framing a face portraying a peaceful and reserved facial expression. The sumptuous gown, the luxurious jewelry and the exquisite drapery, no one of them does not reveal her honorable status and her fortune as well as fine temperament. Ingres strives to demonstrate her inner beauty and selects an ornately carved frame to frame this painting. The later keeper also keeps the frame intact. Unfortunately, the princess died at thirty five. Her husband was so sad that he kept the portrait behind draperies in perpetual tribute to her memory. This painting is stylish of Ingres painting ethic. Ingres put more weight on outline than on color. From his early painting, he shows the firmness of outline reflecting his most-quoted conviction that “drawing is the probity of art while regarding color as an accessory to drawing, which is in a sharp contrast to his nenemis, the Romantic school. In this painting, Ingres shows a suavity of outline to match the temperament of the princess. Instead of making recourse to the brushstroke to get shifting effects of color and light, he transcribes the material quality of objects to demonstrate beautiful color accuracy by spraying millions of ink droplets onto paper’s surface, bringing the satin, silk damask upholstery, richly embroidered scarf and the shinny jewels into life.
