Welcome to Park View
I am delighted to confirm that your child has secured a place at Park View School for September 2021. We are very much looking forward to working closely with all our new pupils and their families to ensure that their move from primary to secondary education is a happy and enjoyable experience. Park View is a mixed, community secondary school that boasts a vibrant and richly diverse culture, with approximately 1,100 pupils. We are confident that your child will enjoy their time here and will be well supported by all our members of staff to be successful. We hope to meet our 2021/22 cohort on several occasions before they formally join us in September, and we will share the details of this very soon. We fully understand how stressful the Covid-19 situation has been, particularly for pupils who will be starting a new school. Please be reassured that we will do everything we can to ensure that your child will be fully supported postCovid, and our teams are well prepared to help your child in any way we can to limit any further impact of Covid on their well-being or education. Covid permitting, we still hope to invite all our new Year 7 to take part in a taster day on-site in June, where they will get a real feel of what a school day at Park View is like. Critically, our new parents/carers and pupils must attend our admission interviews on 6th and 7th July, to complete their enrolment forms and finalise the admission process ready for September. Please add these dates to your diary today. This booklet contains useful information for both families and our new pupils and will hopefully answer many questions you may have. We are very much looking forward to meeting you and your child and working with you all in the future. Welcome to the PV Family!

The House System In Park View School, there are four Houses: OAK, ELM, CEDAR and MAPLE. All staff and pupils are assigned to a specific House when they join the school. Everyone in Park View is involved in representing their house and this is demonstrated in different ways. From wearing the correct uniform, raising money for charities, learning new skills, building confidence of peers to proudly wearing the House ties. These are some of the best practice that we foster at Park View School. There is an even spread of Academic, Sports, Arts, Musical and Leadership abilities within our House system. The houses were named suitably based on the ethos and essence of Park View School. Oak, Elm, Cedar and Maple trees are strong, adaptive, and resilient with very deep roots. These fantastic qualities reflect the members of our school community in one form or another. The Houses are made up of the form groups as follows: OAK ELM
P&V A&I
CEDAR
R&E
Mr J Ferrari (Head of House) tbc Ms G Rubinstein (Head of House)
MAPLE
K&W
Ms C Heath (Head of House)

House Captains There is an application process to become a House Captain. The House Captains participate in organising, promoting and running events. House Captains have regular meetings, give information and announcements and work with teachers and students to ensure that the essence of all the houses is a prominent feature in the school community.
House Ties When pupils start at Park View School, they will be assigned to a House and as such will be required to wear the tie designated to their house as part of their school uniform. The House Captains have special house sweatshirts in their house colours so that they are easily recognisable.
Attendance and Punctuality Nationally, poor attendance to school is one of the main causes of a lack of student progress and under achievement. At Park View, outstanding attendance and punctuality are celebrated on a weekly and termly basis. The school, our parents and the students themselves, all have an important role to play in ensuring attendance and punctuality remain high. If a child is absent from school for any reason please call: 0208 8881722 or email Mr S Joannou (Attendance & EWO - Educational Welfare Officer) sjoannou@parkview.haringey.sch.uk Students are encouraged to monitor their own attendance and know what colour coded band they belong to. All students should aim to be in our green and blue bands. Parents and carers are informed when their child moves from one band to another. If a child is absent and the school has not been notified, you will be sent a text message or email. You may also be called by someone in the pastoral team and our Attendance and Educational Welfare Officer (EWO). If a pupil is late to school without a valid reason they will be given a detention. Persistent lateness will lead to additional sanctions and a meeting will be scheduled with the Head of Year and families.
13
Expectations Attendance and Punctuality at Park View Park View's attendance target is 96% or higher for every pupil, in every class, every year. It is a parent/carer’s legal responsibility to ensure their child attends school every day on time. Where pupils are not attending school the Local Authority may, in extreme cases, prosecute the parents or carers. This could result in a fine or prison term of up to 3 months. Homework At Park View, we believe that regular homework is an important extension to the students' learning day and an opportunity for students to develop their ability to work on their own, to carry out research or to extend themselves academically. Homework is assigned to students through an online application called ‘Satchel:one’ www.satchelone.com. Both parents and students can access the school’s homework calendar via the school website. Students will be shown on their first day at Park View how they access their own personal homework calendar using the RM Unify dashboard. The dashboard is easily accessible both in and out of school.
The roles of parents and carers Homework provides a clear connection between school and home in a child's education and development. Parents and carers can make a real difference to their child's progress at school, attitude to work and development as independent learners by encouraging positive attitudes to homework. As part of their responsibilities, parents should: • •
•
Provide a peaceful and suitable place in which children can do their homework Check homework using the homework calendar via ‘Satchel:one’ at least once a week, to check what homework has been set and to ensure that their child has understood what is expected Discuss any issues with their child and raise any concerns with the teacher

School Dining At Park View, our catering services are provided by ‘Innovate’, who offer a compelling mix of high quality food choices and are committed to providing a fresh food service in a convenient and fun way. Throughout the year, ‘Innovate’ provide 'International Menus' to celebrate theme days. Menus are designed to provide the pupils with the very best mix of contemporary, global and traditional flavours to enhance their dining experience, whilst providing well-balanced menus to help support a healthy lifestyle. A full price list can be found on the school’s website.
Cashless Catering At Park View, we use and promote a cashless catering system called ‘ParentPay’ – www.parentpay.com. This means that pupils no longer need to bring money into school to pay for food and refreshments throughout the day. This system has a number of advantages: • •
Parents know that pupils are eating healthy foods each day and not spending money on unhealthy food and drinks Parents/carers have the option to monitor the foods that their children are consuming by means of a secure website
Please activate your ParentPay account for Park View using your Login Details. It makes all payment transactions with Park View more transparent, easy to manage and minimises risk of losing cash while at school. How is this achieved? In order to make this possible we use a biometric solution. The pupils are required to place a fingertip on a scanner at the point of sale. The pupils picture and name then appears on a screen for a till operator to verify. The till operator then selects the items the pupil wishes to purchase and the appropriate amount is automatically deducted from the pupil’s account. How is money paid into a pupil's account? Using the secure website ‘ParentPay’, parents/carers will be able to pay online using a credit or debit card. Parents can choose to be alerted when their balances are low via email and/or SMS text.

How do I find out if my child is eligible for free school meals? Park View receives almost £1,000 additional funding every year for every child who has been eligible for Free School Meals at any time in the last six years. Free school meals may be provided for your children if you, as a parent are in receipt of Income Support, Income Based Job Seekers Allowance, income-related employment and support allowance (this benefit was introduced on 27 October 2008), the guarantee element of State Pension Credit, support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 or receive Child Tax Credit (but not Working Tax Credit) and have an annual income of less than £16,190. To find out whether your child qualifies for free school meals, please complete the form available in the Free School Meals checker section on the website. If you require any further information about Free School Meals, please contact the Information and Advice Centre on 020 8547 5234 or email freeschoolmeals@gov.uk
Communication with Parents/Carers Communicating with Staff We try to run an 'open door' policy to make it easy for parents to raise issues and concerns with teachers. However, it is important to remember that teachers cannot leave a class at a moment’s notice. If you need to see a teacher, please either, telephone, email or write in advance to make an appointment at a mutually convenient time. Your first point of contact for pastoral issues is the Form Tutor, who sees your child on a daily basis and then the Year 7 Head of Year or Deputy Head of Year. Your first point of contact for academic issues is your child's Subject Teacher. Staff email addresses can be found on the school’s website under the contact tab.
Security The safety of our pupils is our first concern. The following procedures must be followed. • • • •
Access to the school is via Ashley’s Alley entrance and Langham Road in Year 11 Visitors are asked to sign in using our InVentry system, who are then issued with a Visitor Pass. Visitors without a pass will be asked to go to the school office Park View has a community police officer as part of the Safer Schools Partnership CCTV in constant operation for security purposes. Footage is only checked when an incident occurs. Footage is retained for 50 days.
There are number of ways in which the school communicates with parents/carers. All members of staff are to communicate with parents/carers in order to support the learning, personal development and well-being of all pupils.

Pupil Planner (PV Learning Journal) Parents' Evenings Email / Text messages
Groupcall
Newsletter
Social Media
Letter

Meetings
The planner is the most frequent form of communication between school and home. Parents can communicate with tutors in sections provided. Each year group will have a minimum of one parents' evening in each academic year. Email communication with parents/carers is encouraged. All staff email addresses are made available on the school’s website. Our online communication tool which will keep parents/carers up to date with the latest updates, attendance information and school trips. A newsletter will be published every term, highlighting all of the fantastic events that have taken place that term. The school’s Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube channel will keep parents/carers up to date with all the latest events and announcements. Letters that are for groups of parents/carers are normally distributed through 'pupil post'. The majority of letters will be distributed via Groupcall. Some important letters will be posted Members of staff may phone home to parents/carers either to praise pupils or alert them to issues where appropriate. Meetings with parents/carers are appropriate in a number of cases. If all other means of communications have not resolved an issue, staff can make an appointment with a parent/carer to discuss it further.
Parents' Evenings Parents' evenings are one of the best opportunities to communicate with us and help in motivating and educating your child. At this appointment, you will get a progress report about your child showing their current progress and their end of key stage targets from all curriculum areas. You will have the opportunity to discuss all aspect of your child's learning with all teachers.
19
Medical Care Our school’s trained First-Aiders are able to deal with most medical situations. If a pupil is unwell, it is essential that they report to the medical room, where a decision will be made whether or not to return to lessons or contact parents so they may be taken home. Under no circumstances should pupils telephone parents first, avoiding our medical care procedures. In certain circumstances, medication can be administered during the day. We do NOT allow pupils to bring medication or drugs into the school without prior agreement. If your child needs a specific medication, please bring it to the school yourself with a letter from your GP explaining the need to take the medication during the school day. If your child has a long-term condition that requires medication, please make an appointment with Ms S Sobers, Safeguarding Manger, to discuss your child's health condition.
Curriculum and Assessment Assessment and Target Setting Assessment strategies at Park View are concerned with the whole child and designed to raise expectations and aspirations. The process of target setting and assessment of progress enables staff, pupils and their families to make decisions about the education of each pupil including the identification of additional needs and beneficial interventions. Targets are aspirational and based on the progress expected of the top 25% of pupils across the country. Assessment is formative and summative. It directs the next steps necessary to develop your child's individual learning progress, as well as assessing the point reached in any given area of the curriculum.
Celebration of Achievement The aim of the Celebration of Achievement ethos is to create a cooperative community where pupils can learn happily. The school is committed to valuing all pupils and building on the strengths and contributions of all groups. In recognising, rewarding and celebrating the achievements of members of the school, the aims of the school are strengthened and the life of the school enriched. Such celebrations promote respect for others and their achievements, foster self-esteem and encourage self-improvement and learning. Park View aspires to an ethos of progress and achievement, which means support for all learners, strategies for empowering learners and for encouraging pupils to take some responsibility for their own learning through the Learning to Learn initiative. Also, we actively forge positive partnerships between home and school, between pupils and teachers and between pupil and pupil.
20
Inclusive Education Park View has very successfully developed the roles of the support staff in order to meet pupils' cognitive, social and emotional learning needs alongside teachers' support needs as a key part in raising standards of attainment. They have established close links with curricular and pastoral teams and are able to draw on resources both inside and outside the school and communicate all necessary information.
Home School Agreement When pupils first join Park View, they and their parents/carers sign our Home School Agreement. This focuses on the development of self-management skills as well as pupils becoming effective participators. It also details how both the school and home can support pupils developing themselves as Park View Learners and respectful members of the community.
