PROJECT LEARNINGS I have been a part of this project throughout my internship tenure. When I joined the firm, the construction work for both Villas was done till the plinth level and columns of ground floor were casted for Vikram’s Villa. Before I left, the entire civil work was completed of both Villas, the plastering work was being done and the Gym and Staff Block excavation were in progress. By being a part of such a long part of the project, I was able to be a part of a number of decisions and processes. From understanding how the conceptual drawings are done to drafting and releasing good for construction drawings, I have learned a lot of things in this project. My major learning was aquainting myself with the rather organic design process that the firm follows. Many decissions are taken only after seeing how the spaces are coming up thorugh regular site visits. As the construction progresses, there are many changes that take place from the designer’s side and also from the Client’s side as they are able to better visualize themselves living in those spaces. Although this back and forth process stretches the project timeline and a lot of effort goes in updating all the drawing sets, the final outcome is often a better decission and the house feels a lot more personal to the client as they become a part of the design and construction process.

SUMMARY From the two options presented to the clients team, Option 1 was selected for Plot A and Option 2 was selected for Plot B. For both options, the client wanted to go G+2 and spread the spaces vertically. Based on the discussions with them, conceptual design drawings were presented with two options - one as G+1 and the other as G+2. SCOPE OF WORK The zoning was further worked on by Ar. Naveli Sharma and I with others was responsible for detailing the interior spaces of the floor plans, drafting basic elevations and making presentation drawings for the clients meeting for both G+1 and G+2 options. I was also responsible for making 3D model of the zoning options using Revit software for an overall understanding of the massing of the two villas, their proportions , roof and relation with respect to each other and the open spaces around.

SUMMARY From the two options presented to the clients team, they opted for the G+2 option for both villas. On earlier stages they were not so keen on following Vastu but at this stage, they consulted their Vastu expert and wanted us to make major changes in the spatial layout accomodating the same. SCOPE OF WORK Since the clients asked for major changes, the zoning was reworked on by Ar. Naveli Sharma. I with others was responsible for detailing the interior spaces of the floor plans, drafting basic elevations and making presentation drawings for the next clients meeting. We also prepared a look and feel presentation for both the villas, giving them a general idea of how the interior spaces will look in terms of colour, furniture and furnishings and how the exterior spaces will look in terms of materials, landscape and proportions.

PROJECT LEARNINGS I was a part of this project in the early stages of design development. In the process, I observed and learnt how our design team approaches a new project, what all is thought of during the zoning and the design development stages and their way of visualizing spaces from scratch. This project had a very tight timeline for the early stages of design and we were always running behind the deadline in this case. In the limited time available, I learnt how my seniors managed the resources and how the work flowed was divided. In this project, I also witnessed that although as designers, we try to take information from the client as to what their needs are, sometimes they are not vocal enough or they haven’t thought of enough about what they actually need during the right stage which causes delay in the project timelines and also cause a lot of work to be redone.

SCOPE OF WORK

EXTERNAL ELEVATION
I was responsible for the documentation of the old structure and making conceptual designs for a new staff block. The new staff block needed two rooms for male and female attendants with attached washrooms, common kitchen and storage.

PROJECT LEARNINGS Since this project is the personal home of Ms. Ritu, a very hands on design approach was used in this project. More than making drawings and sorting technical details on paper, most of the decisions were used to be taken on site in consultation with the different contractors and consultants and only minimum drawings were done to convey the necessary information. The project was a very special one in sense that it was a restoration plus new development which came with its own challenges. Through this project, I learnt how design is evolved while working with site and construction constaints, how different contractors work is coordinated and how design works as a more organic process.

CLIENT BRIEF
Client Project Type Project Scope
: Mr. Jay and Mrs. Kantelli : Villa : Architecture and Interiors
Site Location Site Area Built up Area
: Siolim, Goa : 2,258 sq. m. : 590 sq. m.
The site has a steep slope with an elevation difference of around 22m in running 75m length. The clients wanted a house that does not portray oppulence rather sits humbly in the natural landscape. The house is for a family of six of three generations and so were the space requirements.
F.A.R. achieved Max. F.A.R. G.C. Max. G.C.
: 0.26 : 0.8 : 325 sq. m. = 14% : 40%
The clients wanted the house to have a minimal, natural woodsy feel to it and they wanted large landscape spaces around. Since the terrain of the site required heavy pitching and retaining walls, they wanted to ensure that the house does not look palatial.

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN DRAWINGS - R0
SUMMARY Based on the zoning, the site was levelled at the three points. The client gave a go ahead with the zoning option presented to them. They requested for few changes - to include lift from the driveway till the top floor and shaded pool with more width. Based on the discussions, conceptual design drawings were prepared. Since the monsoons were about to begin, designing of the retaining compound walls began. SCOPE OF WORK The zoning was further worked on by Ar. Naveli Sharma and I with others was responsible for detailing the interior spaces of the floor plans, drafting basic elevations and making presentation drawings for the clients meeting. We then worked on the design of the retaining walls of the property. I was also responsible for making a 3D model on Sketchup and a physical 3D model of the house for an overall understanding of the contours, the massing, proportions and compound walls.

SUMMARY Based on the feedbacks from clients on the conceptual drawing - R0, the drawings were updated and look and feel presentation were prepared for the Villa. SCOPE OF WORK I with others was responsible for detailing the interior spaces of the floor plans, drafting basic elevations and making presentation drawings for the next clients meeting. We also prepared a look and feel presentation for the villa, giving them a range of options of how the interior spaces can look in terms of colour, furniture and furnishings and how the exterior spaces can look in terms of materials, landscape and proportions.

PROJECT LEARNINGS This project had a complex site and many of the design decisions regarding landscape and extent of the built structure were determined by the site conditions. There was a lot of coordination involved in this project with the structural and landscape consultants right from the start owing to the complexity of the site. In this project, the clients had a brief understanding of how the spaces should work and look but there was a lack of clarity as to what exactly is their preference of the spaces. To come on the same page, a lot of moodboards were shared by the team to the clients whilst the clients were also asked to show us refernce images that they liked of different spaces.
