PARTISANS, founded by Alexander Josephson and Pooya Baktash, is an award winning design syndicate, based in Toronto, that emerged in the wake of the financial crisis. Partisans are part of a new wave of practices that are redefining the future of architecture, urban planning, industrial design. Partisans do work ranging from residential and commercial projects, to furniture, and theoretical concepts for cites. The Golden Horseshoe has an abundance of fabrication firms who previously served the automotive industry, employing sophisticated technologies in largescale manufacturing processes.

partisanbookfinal5x10.indd 4

PARTISANS has joined this industry and marries culture with material and spatial experimentation. Our software and drawing techniques allows Partisans to remove the middle men from the design and fabrication processes allowing for extraordinary work in each project. PARTISANS carry no identification, have no distinguishing marks, look like everyone else. we are found across disciplines and industries sharing a curious, critical approach to the world. Our work is both the result of the culture which created it and part of the cultural praxis.

PARTISANS believe in developing places that contribute to authentic democratic experiences in all cities. We deliver architectures of experience, transparent process, and unique place in order to create opportunities for better decisions about the places you want to participate in. PARTISANS locates design in spaces between ephemeral and enduring, between fleeting moods and real character, where places allow for surprise and invention in the context of reliable results.

St Clair Eye Clinic completed: 2011 Construction: 3 months Type: Medical Retail The St Clair Eye Clinic is a state of the art diagnostic facility and retail shop for designer eyewear. The premise for the project was to create a dynamic multipurpose facility with incredible spatial qualities in order to accommodate the client’s five proposed uses. A place that could be as much a gallery for wandering in to experience the art displays, but also to be able to accommodate more than fifteen waiting patients, and retail customers in a medical office setting as well. This space is under 950sqft and yet feels like it could be much larger due to the optical effects of the interior

partisanbookfinal5x10.indd 7

architecture, which is built as a forced perspective, a reference to the architecture and optics of the human eye. The display wall is a monocoque technology milled from a structural foam into a fifty-six foot long merchandising wall as well as system of benches and spatial devices working in concert to enhance the experience of the space.

FARMEGEDDON to be completed: 2013 Construction: 6 months Type: RESIDENTIAL Farmegeddon is a project for an intriguing young man, who purchased a farm on the outskirts of Toronto in the Niagara Escarpment. It is a moving landscape, filled with apple orchards and an enormous Weeping Willow tree that sits in a wetlands and pond standing in a valley that an existing antique log cabin straddles. The client insisted that it needed to be a masterpiece, a collector of art and builder himself, he wanted this farm to be an extension of a particular philosophy of life. This would be the home base for his family and refuge from the onslaught of the city. The challenge was

partisanbookfinal5x10.indd 23

that this land is in some of the most environmentally sensitive and protected lands in the country, a place where architecture and building is not easily granted permissions. We immediately realized that the smartest thing to do was to keep the idyllic cabin and expand it within our legal rights by twenty percent and then create a perforated screen around the house, allowing us to create the illusion of a mysterious piece of contemporary building, while circumventing the problems of regulation. The result is a more responsible and yet intentionally subversive architecture that is about transparency and the mediation of outdoors spaces to the indoors. The screen is made up of a parametrically defined series of perforations which increase in scale depending on proximity to the windows of the actual house, the main window of the house is a single insulated glass unit twenty two feet wide by nine feet tall.

JOSEPHSON OPTICIANS B.C.E to be completed: 2013 Construction: 1 months Type: RETIAL The Josephson’s Brookfield place location is an intriguing series of design victories. Malls of these kind tend to have very dominant design criteria as well as rules about construction times and labor laws that together make progressive and ambitious work difficult to achieve. Our design, which is based on the premise of a light ribbon to tie all of the displays and spaces together, functions on numerous levels. It is not just a dramatic and poetic object, the ribbon contains the ambient light sources, which are so important to display the eyewear, as well as acoustic dampening

partisanbookfinal5x10.indd 31

to prevent the hum of the mall from affecting the experience of the customers. It also acts as a secure display of the latest products in a surreal and interesting way. The concepts are only manageable in concert with a technological proficiency that allows for the entire store to be staged off site in a fabrication shop. In short, the store is being built offsite in modules that will be installed in under 3 weeks and within extremely tight budget constraints. The combination of our technological expertise as well as design vision allows for this project to be tenable because we minimize the closure of the existing location, which has a positive affect on the overall cost of the project.
