Hello
with editor Dave Gregory
WELCOME TO YOUR GREAT NEW LOOK MAGAZINE! WITHOUT HAND TOOLS YOUR DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS WOULDN’T BE WORTH INVESTING IN, SO IT’S WORTH PAYING ATTENTION TO HAND TOOLS, AND LOOKING AFTER THE ONES YOU ALREADY HAVE.
I
T’S A busy time across the garage trade, and yes, for many it’s the holiday season, but for those not going on holiday or waiting a few more weeks before setting off, it’s business as usual. That has to be good news for independent garages – there are some cyclical elements of the trade, such as increase in demand for replacement batteries come the first cold snap, and an upswing in air-conditioning works as it starts getting warm, but otherwise business tends to motor along with few demand spikes. In this issue we get up close to those unsung heroes of the workshop, hand tools. As we see, it’s all too easy to concentrate on having the latest diagnostic equipment but pay little attention to screwdrivers, sockets and even those job-specific tools that are becoming increasingly prevalent. Without hand tools your diagnostic tools wouldn’t be worth investing in, so it’s worth paying attention to hand tools, and looking after the ones you already have. There’s also a catch-up with what’s occurring with wheels and tyres equipment. Here’s a sector that has been embraced a lot more by workshops in recent years, and with good
reason. The demand is there, and for workshops carrying out MoT tests the need to supply replacement tyres is almost part and parcel of the job. But what equipment do you buy? With so many tyre types out there, such as run-flats and mega-diameter types, it’s definitely worth doing your homework first. Enjoy the issue!

EORGE OSBORNE has announced a review of the MOT frequency, proposing that the first MOT for cars and motorbikes be increased from three years to four. In his budget speech, the Chancellor said: “We will consult on extending the deadline for new cars and motorbikes to have their first MOT test from three years to four years, which would save motorists over £100m a year”. This suggestion has not gone down well with the trade. The RMI’s Independent Garage Association Director Stuart James said: “The government seems to take the view that the MOT is a burden on motorists – we think that motorists deserve more credit than that. Road safety is a priority for them and their families and they understand that roadworthiness testing of vehicle is an important part of making our roads among the safest in Europe.” The Chancellor didn’t specify when the consultation might start, or how wide reaching it might be. However, it is notable that the wording of the speech excluded vans as it is has been noted in previous frequency reviews that vehicles in MOT class VII generally lead a much harder life and need more frequent checks.

INVESTIGATES The Chancellor did have some good news for the industry when he announced that he would cancel the fuel duty increase which was scheduled for September so clearly he was in the mood for giving some good news to motorists. Independent garages, on the other hand, could lose out on £100m of business if this decision is brought into legislation at some time in the five year life of the government. Safety will also be compromised with Wendy Williamson of the IAAF having concerns over the new proposals. The IAAF has reacted angrily to potential proposals to extend the frequency of a vehicle’s first MOT test from three years to four years and plans to lobby the government on reversing any such proposals, stating that the current test frequency is
stance has always been that VOSA’s regulation of the MOT process and current testing frequency of 3:1:1 helps to make UK roads the safest in Europe. both safer and more cost effective for motorists. If the government’s proposals came into force, Chancellor George Osborne predicted that motorists would save £100million annually. But, IAAF chief executive, Wendy Williamson, voiced a number of concerns. “To ensure as safe and cost effective motoring as possible, motorists must have their vehicle inspected and serviced regularly. Given that figures suggest one in five vehicles fail their MOT in the first three years and with new car sales at record highs, moving to an extended testing period would potentially cause more accidents and fatalities due to defective vehicles on UK roads.” In recent years, the MOT testing frequency has been subject to much debate. The IAAF’s

changes would also see the risk of fraud from clockers escalate. Neil Hodson, Managing Director for HPI, says of the Chancellor’s proposal, “There are clearly some safety concerns surrounding the idea of extending the MoT period by a further 12 months, but there is also an increased risk of fraud. “Whilst it’s fair to assume that older cars are the most likely to have their mileage reading altered, the reality is that around a third of all cars checked by the trade with HPI are found
to have a mileage discrepancy within the first three years of their life. Extending the period for a further fourth year, would see the number of pre-MoT cars with a suspect mileage, increasing putting dealers and used car buyers at significant risk. “The danger for the dealer is that they unwittingly part exchange a clocked car, leaving them at risk of Trading Standards and legal repercussions,
not to mention the damage to their reputation. Consumers may welcome the news of cost savings from a delayed MOT, but they could end up paying more than the car is worth, if they come a cropper of clocking. Turning back the miles allows fraudsters to push the price up on a vehicle. An unsuspecting buyer won’t realise they’ve just paid over the odds for a vehicle that’s done more miles than the odometer suggests, meaning more wear and tear and potentially, expensive repairs.” Not only does the HPI National Mileage Register (NMR) contain over 200 million mileage records covering vehicles of all ages, dating as far back as 1992, it crucially holds the mileage readings of vehicles less than three years of age. The NMR collates and stores mileage data from a number of sources, including the DVLA, warranty and service records. A mileage check against the NMR includes an NMR Investigation, if the mileage is found to be discrepant. This will exhaust all avenues to ensure the mileage is legitimate or not - enabling
the dealer to make an informed purchase decision. Neil Hodson concludes, “A mileage check is a vital tool for dealers looking to operate best practice. Not only will it give dealers the reassurance that they have met their duty of care under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations, it will protect their business and their customers, as well as raising standards within the motor industry, as a whole. The proposed extension on the MoT offers motorists savings on one hand, but it could cost them and the industry a lot more if it gives clockers a free ride.” Clearly other trade associations and industry bodies have had their say and one told me that he has major concerns over the lack of government investment in the quality of our roads. Many cars are suffering damage from poor road surfaces and pot holes and three years is about the right time to have a car checked out. There will be some hectic action from the lobbyists over the next few months so watch this space.

RMI gains accreditation RMI Standards and Certification (RMISC) has received full accreditation from the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to certify against BS 10125, the replacement for PAS125 which is to be withdrawn at the end of 2015. RMISC, a subsidiary company of the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI), is now able to carry out audits and certify bodyshops that meet the standard, issuing the Ri-Mark logo for them to demonstrate their compliance with BS 10125. Stuart James, RMISC Director said, “We are delighted to have received accreditation from UKAS to provide BS 10125 certification to the bodyshop sector. It has always been our intention to make the standards accessible to all bodyshops, irrespective of their size and nature. RMISC was set up with the aim of providing cost-effective, highquality services to the motor industry.”

The AA chooses Volkswagen as its perfect match
The
W
hether they’re suffering from a flat battery in Falkirk or a breakdown in Brighton, around 15 million people in the UK who rely on the AA for roadside assistance will soon welcome the sight of a full-equipped Volkswagen Transporter arriving to help get them back on the road. That’s because a new agreement will see more than 500 Transporters, including around 70 4MOTION all-wheel-drive versions, added to the AA’s patrol fleet – a move that will ensure stranded motorists across the country are rescued by one of the most reliable and dependable vans on the road. Key factors in the AA’s decision to add to its fleet of patrol vehicles included the Transporter’s payload capabilities, safety features and adaptable load area. Like all Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the AA’s new Transporters will benefit from Volkswagen’s award winning aftersales programme, and with more than 70 dedicated Volkswagen Van Centres across the UK, patrols will never be far away from warranty support.
The Transporters will be painted in the AA’s distinctive yellow trademark colour at the Volkswagen factory in Hannover. The vehicles will also be converted for purpose with specialist racking to accommodate the AA’s tow system, tools and additional equipment. Sarah Millward, Commercial Director, AA Road Operations, commented: ‘Our members rely on us throughout the year for efficient roadside recovery, therefore when looking at manufacturers to bolster our fleet we took into account vehicle performance, value for money and servicing packages. The Volkswagen Transporter was an ideal fit for our fleet thanks to its drivability and load space combined with the reliability of Volkswagen engineering.’ Chris Black, Head of Fleet at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK, added: ‘We work in partnership with the AA which offers exclusive round-theclock support and care for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle customers, and we are delighted that from 2015, AA members will receive roadside assistance from patrols in Transporter vehicles.’

Whilst traditional security methods, such as a steering wheel lock (30%) and a clutch pedal lock (22%), remain popular amongst vigilant car owners, the emergence of connection protection devices, essentially a steel box which covers the OBD port to prevent diagnostics access, is being recognised as a worthy security measure (25%). However, stolen vehicle tracking devices have significantly become the number one consideration (40%). “Car hacking has been an issue for a long time but the recent surge in cases of this nature have much to do with the accessibility of these devices, which can be freely purchased online for as little as £20,” explains Andy Barrs, Police Liaison Officer, TRACKER. “Whilst the evolution of car technology has made everyday life easier for car owners, its sophistication is not outsmarting thieves, indeed it could be making their lives easier. “Whilst a tracking unit won’t prevent your car from being stolen by thieves in the first instance, it does increase the chances of your car being located and returned to you by up to 95%. Furthermore, with 86% of stolen cars returned to their rightful owner within 24 hours of being stolen, TRACKER’s own product could prove the difference between a vehicle being found and returned or never seen again. It is for this reason that ours is the only SVR product used by all the UK’s police forces,” concludes Andy Barrs.

TOW SHOW DO YOU 2015 WANT TO FREE ENTRY AND CAR PARK
SEE THE VERY BEST SLIDEBEDS IN THE INDUSTRY?
T
HE TOW Show offers just that opportunity when they open the doors for two days on the very latest technology in lightweight car transporters. The Tow Show is taking place at the Telford International Centre on Thursday and Friday, 1011 September 2015. Specifically targeting the vehicle recovery industry, there are many manufacturers who specialise in lightweight flatbed transporters from 3.5 ton up to 7.5 ton and they will all be exhibiting the very latest in lightweight transporters. The recovery industry has demanded fuel-efficient alternatives over the past six years and the manufacturers have responded with variations of honeycomb aluminium beds to reduce the weight of the vehicle and increase dramatically the pay-load. The 3.5 ton vehicles will transport most types of saloon cars and the 7.5 tonners will cater for the larger transit type vehicles. KFS Specialist Vehicles in Andover have even
developed a 4.5 ton slidebed which bridges the gap in weight differential. Also in Andover is J&J Conversions. They have a strong reputation in the lightweight transporters and they are happy to work with the customer to produce bespoke vehicles for individual customers. MD, Richard Guy said: “Guaranteed quality, working to the most stringent standards across the spectrum of our products is paramount regardless of what the product is or who the end user is. All these vehicles come with fully serviceable winches and if you rely on extra pay-load there are double car transporters available. If you prefer, there are covered transporters available. The Tow Show showcases the recovery industry and there will
10 & 11 Sept 2015 Telford International Centre Sponsored by
be around 70 exhibitors at the two-day show. There will also be live demonstrations of recovery in action and separate demonstrations of specific equipment. Amongst the range of exhibitors there are many companies selling ancillary equipment such as strapping, winches, high-viz clothing and the full range of equipment that goes with modern day transportation. The Institute of Vehicle Recovery will also be in attend-
ance and they oversee training standards and can offer bespoke courses for your staff who will be operating the equipment. It is well worth a visit to the Tow Show. It is free to enter, car parking is free and the Telford International Centre can be accessed via the M54 at Telford. If you would like to more then call Show Director, Paul Gregory on 01952 415334 or you can visit our website at: www.recoverytowshow.co.uk.
Want to exhibit? The Tow Show gets around 2,000 visitors over the two days and around 80% of the visitors are company owners or decision makers. There are around 4,500 vehicle recovery companies across the UK and the great majority of them have garage facilities, many of which are available to the general population. The Tow Show offers the opportunity to sell your product to this audience. Most recovery operators have at least twenty trucks and all of them service their own vehicles. Do you want to showcase your product to this emerging industry? Then give us a call. We have a few spaces left for exhibitors. INSIDE A TURBO Improving efficiency
A turbo is effectively a pump that forces more air into the engine. It improves performance, without the fuel consumption or emissions you’d get from a bigger engine with comparable power output. The turbo is mounted between the exhaust manifold and downpipe. Exhaust gases drive the turbine, which is connected by a shaft to a compressor that pulls in air and compresses it. As engine revs increase, more exhaust gas passes through the turbine housing, making the turbine wheel rotate faster – up to 6,000 revs per second, or 360,000 rpm. The hot exhaust gases can reach 950°C, heating the entire turbo including the air that’s drawn in. Hotter air reduces power, so it’s usually passed through an intercooler to lower the air temperature.
The
Wastegate turbos A small turbine gives a good response at low engine speeds, but at higher revs it can overspeed, and overboost the engine. Wastegate turbos are fitted with a valve which allows some exhaust gas to bypass the turbine wheel, preventing excessive boost pressure. This means the turbine wheel can safely be smaller, giving better engine response yet still maintaining maximum power output.
Variable turbine turbos These turbos move vanes or a nozzle to alter the turbine stage, allowing more efficient use of exhaust gas to provide an

The experts at BTN Turbo share their knowledge, which can be invaluable for helping to diagnose and fix faults. optimum boost level across the widest range of engine speeds. This improves response and fuel economy, enhances engine braking and allows vehicle manufacturers to use smaller engine packages to achieve a given power output.

The importance of oil A turbo is built to tolerances of thousandths of a millimetre. At its heart, the shaft bearings float on a thin film of oil, fed under pressure from the engine. The oil is kept in place by unique oil seals, designed to cope with the turbo’s extreme temperatures and pressures, and prevent leaks into the compressor or turbine housings. Nearly all turbo failures are oil-related - running a turbo without oil for five seconds is as harmful as running an engine without oil for five minutes. So whenever you fit a replacement turbo, make sure it has a correct, clean oil supply.

The UK battery market is a crowded one – there’s plenty of choice, but what do you go on – price or quality? Writes Richard Barnett. editor@garageandmot.co.uk
ne long-established brand, but one that’s been flying almost beyond the radar for a good few years, is Banner. The company’s UK operation has been headed-up by Lee Quinney, who previously looked after ACDelco’s UK operations. Now, as Banner’s country manager, Quinney is a familiar face to many aftermarket people and that’s certain to work in his favour as he builds on Banner’s good, but not well-known, profile. Things, however, look set to change. Joining the business five months ago, Quinney’s plans to raise Banner’s profile are already taking shape. “I’ve looked at everything from the ground up: I looked at the sales force and now we have two new faces in the four-strong team, and now I have to look at developing the marketing side,” Quinney says.
With the Austrian headquarters aware of Quinney’s aftermarket experience he’s running the ship with little interference, especially when it comes to the day-to-day operations. The company, which was founded in 1937, remains family-owned, and it attributes much of its success to that steady lineage. Being able to use Banner’s OE pedigree is a useful selling pint for factors and, further along the supply chain, independent garages and Quinney is more than happy to unashamedly push that. “That side of the business is growing: Banner supplies OE to VAG, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, as well as Aston Martin, Morgan and Porsche. But alongside cars we have other batteries, covering motorhomes, motorcycles, HGVs and plant.” Yet despite that strong offering and that OE pedigree, workshops still need to wake

up to the Banner offering. Deals with buying groups have broadened the brand’s coverage but there’s still work to do, especially to overcome the threat from cheap, low-quality batteries that sell solely on price. Banner has been in the UK for 16 or so years and, while in a partnership in those early days, has been independent for the last 10. During that time a loyal following developed and that will serve as a springboard for Banner’s fresh marketing efforts. “The big push is for winter sales. While sales have slightly flattened out across the year there will be a spike every win-
ter, helped along by increased demand for the more sophisticated stop/start batteries. Boss Quinney is hoping that AGM and EFB technologies will push sales upwards, and by tying in those battery types with the need for the exact like-for-like replacements the Banner hand should be strengthened. Anticipating an upswing in demand, since 2011 Banner has invested 30 million Euros in its production plant, of which 20 million Euros have been spent on upping production of AGM stop/start batteries. The not-so-secret weapon in developing sales is Lee Quinney. “My presence has opened doors and there’s now the need to generate more customer interest. We’ve already been relisted with GA Group but there is still the need to push that OE pedigree. After all, the batteries we’re supplying as OE today will be in the aftermarket tomorrow,” he says. Getting the message across – and ensuring it’s not forgotten – is a mixture of education about Banner’s technologies, but also that such technology can be bought at a competitive price. “We’ve got to develop inroads,” he says. There’s no getting away from the presence of the cheap, low-quality battery, but many motorists, desperate to get going again on a cold winter morning, might go for that poor product, even if they know it’s a not really fit for purpose. “There’s a need to educate both the motor factor and the garage.” It’s all very well having the product, but getting it to market is equally important. Banner’s warehouse offers a strong stockholding of all types and has deliveries on a weekly, and sometimes more often, basis, while carefully-controlled stock rotation ensure batteries arrive at a factor in prime condition.

RITISH WOMEN are charged an average of £45 more than men for car repairs, an investigation by ClickMechanic has found. ClickMechanic, the online marketplace for car repairs, examined independent car garages across the UK and found that a standard repair costing a man £571 will typically cost a woman £616, an increase of 8%. Male and female mystery shoppers requested quotes to replace the clutch of a 2011 Ford Focus from 182 garages across ten UK cities. The investigation found that eight out of the ten cities charged women a ‘female premium’ and only 6% of the surveyed garages gave a consistent quote to both male and female customers. The figures vary regionally as the table shows: “Customers, both male and female, rely on mechanics to be accurate with their pricing. We recently carried out a study that found roughly half of people (45%) have no idea how much common repairs on an average household car should cost. While there is a small number of cowboys taking advantage of the fact that most consumers just don’t know how much their car repairs should cost, most mechanics are reliable and trustworthy. These results should therefore encourage the car repair industry to focus its

Commenting on the accreditation, managing director Jonathan Walker said: “We are delighted to have attained this, our most recent performance verification certificate. The Investors in People accreditation not only reflects our commitment to meet independent external measurements, it is also an acknowledgment to the effort and contribution of the whole organisation.” For more information about the quality products available from MAHLE Aftermarket, call the sales team on: 0845 688 5007 or visit: www.mahleaftermarket.com
Launch appointed seller of smoke wizard detector
L
aunch UK has become the approved lead distributor of Global Leak Detection’s Smoke Wizard®, a diagnostic smoke machine used by OEMs such as AMG, Audi, KIA, Mazda, Porsche, Volkswagen, and Jaguar Land Rover. There are two models available in the aftermarket – the GLD-40 and the GLD-50 Smoke Wizards. Smoke Wizards Diagnostic Smoke leak detection has completely changed the way system leaks are diagnosed. Previously, the accepted method for finding micro-leaks was to use a stethoscope and to ‘listen’ for them. Now, Smoke Wizard allows technicians to find leaks by supplying a smoke vapour and UltraTraceUV® dye solution, which finds leaks in virtually any low-pressure system. In under 20 seconds, the device heats the smoke solution to produce the vapour, which is then delivered using compressed air or inert gas to the affected system. The smoke vapour contains a specially formulated OEM approved non-contaminating and nonpermanent UV dye for use in all automotive systems for leak detection. The built-in UV Dye leaves a residue around any leak sites, which is especially important for finding leaks that
may be hidden or require disassembly to find. Using OEM-approved technology, the Smoke Wizard can easily help diagnose the most common “check engine” codes, proving invaluable in all workshop environments. The compact unit – weighing 10lbs – is powered from the vehicle’s battery so it needs no external power source and can be stored upright or laid flat. A number of visual indicators provide support for the user and it accepts air pressure ranging from 50-175 PSI.
The
New code concerns “The proposed new Code of Practice for the Disposal of Motor Salvage, although a significant improvement on the current code, has clearly been drafted to protect insurers”, said Frank Harvey, Head of the National Association of Bodyshops (NAB). Due to the impending abolition of the vehicle identity check (VIC) in October 2015, the Department for Transport (DfT) along with the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has asked the insurer funded Motor Insurer Repair Research Centre, often referred to as Thatcham, to review
the current Code of Practice for the Disposal of Motor Salvage. The code was last reviewed in 2007. Representatives of The National Association of Bodyshops (NAB) and the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) met with the DfT on Wednesday 8 July, to outline their concerns with the proposed new Code of Practice. The new code appears to protect insurers, while exposing consumers and the motoring public to risk from unregulated sale and unregulated repair of written off vehicles.
The flow gauge displays flow into the system and provides a scale on the size of leaks prior to leak detection, saving the technician time by proving there is a leak prior to looking for smoke vapour and UV dye. The pressure decay gauge verifies leaks in the system by monitoring both positive and negative pressure during leak down tests, and the flow control valve allows total control of the volume of vapour delivered from the machine. The kit includes a Schrader tool, EVAP service port adapter, assortment of cap-plugs, a combination light (UV, Laser and white), Exhaust cone adapter and two bottles of UltraTraceUV® Smoke Solution. On a safety level, the GLD-40 is fully optimized to use inert gas for safer EVAP testing. Using an inert gas such as nitrogen greatly reduces the risk of accidental combustion while testing the fuel system. In its role as lead distributor, Launch UK is stocking all spares, machines and is the official Tech Support centre for customers.

IMI MOT Tester Training Centre With the NTTA Exam being phased out, the DVSA and the Institute of the Motor Industry have worked together to create a Level 3 Light Vehicle Inspection Accreditation. The new Accreditation Route has been designed for the Technician who does not hold the relevant qualifications to embark on becoming an MoT Tester. TEN Automotive have expanded their training facility by opening a new Technical Training Centre offering the IMI Light Vehicle Inspection Training & Accreditation which will exempt the candidate from taking the DVSA NTTA Examination. The main advantage of this accreditation is that it does not result in a mandatory waiting period of 3 months (or 2 years) if the candidate does not achieve the required standard. With the IMI route, the candidate can immediately opt for additional training and re-assessment. In addition to the Level 3 LVI Training & Assessment, we also offer a wide range of ATA Courses as well as the IMI Level 3 Air Conditioning Refrigerant Handling Qualification.

here’s no point ignoring the wheels and tyres segment – it offers first-rate income on a highly regular basis and it’s a good way of retaining customers, rather than seeing them take their business to a fast-fit. There’s a plethora of tools required for tackling tyre work – from changers to the most basic items such as tyre levers, workshops need to invest in the right tools for the job. At the same time steering and suspension work has increased, thanks to a combination of poorer road surfaces and increased use of aluminium suspension components. Proof that alignment offers more business opportunities comes from Northern Ireland, where Skoda dealer John Mulholland Motors (JMM) added a Hunter aligner to its workshop last year. The equipment, which
ignore tyres and wheels at your peril! already has Skoda approval, can be upgraded to allow calibration of lane departure and active cruise control systems. Currently measuring alignment of ten vehicles a day, JMM’s aftersales maanger Michael Robinson says the Hunter system has been a wise investment. “We’d heard lots of positive feedback about the Hunter alignment system but we did doubt if it was really as good as it sounded. In all hon-

TYRES AND WHEELS must be properly functioning for the car to pass its MOT,” says Paul Beaurain, managing director, Pro-Align, the exclusive UK distributor of Hunter wheel servicing systems. “It’s therefore important that workshops are properly equipped to be able to change tyres without causing damage to these sensitive and expensive units. Often, damage can occur quite easily through incorrect positioning of levers or simply because technicians are rushing to complete the task and move onto the next waiting job. With the fully automated Revolution tyre changer, is simply isn’t possible to cause this damage.” Gemco, which owns the Dunlop Garage Equipment brand, offers a selection of tyre-changing equipment for cars and commercial vehicles. “Currently the tyre changer range consists of three models for cars and two for commercial/ agricultural vehicles. The first is the DTM185HD model which has an internal rim clamping capacity of 24” (22” outside clamping) and is suitable for all types of tyres including run flats

esty though, it didn’t take long for our scepticism to be proved wrong. “After the initial training our technicians were all able to complete a “quick check” in a minute or two. Everyone found it easy to use and our service advisors are able to give customers a report with either a green or red indicator so they can easily understand if the alignment of their car needs attention or not.” Tyres continue to offer earnings, but the job isn’t a case of merely removing an old, worn tyre from a rim and fitting a new one. Much larger rims, run-flat tyres and the introduction of tyre pressure monitoring systems have brought headaches to workshops. According to Hunter, the TPMS can be damaged when tyres are removed and fitted, and the Hunter revolution tyre changer prevents those problems arising. Capable of working different tyre types and wheel diameters, the Revolution speeds up the tyre-changing task and improves effectiveness of the job. “By law, all new cars are now equipped with TPMS and they

An assist arm ART320 which can be fitted at the factory or retrofitted on site at a later stage is recommended for low profile/run-flats. The same model is also available with tubeless inflation (DTM185HDTI),” Gemco says. “The next model up is the DTM285HD which has an adjustable internal rim clamping capacity of 28” (26” outside clamping) and is also suitable
for the entire range of tyres the fitter is faced with today. To cope with the larger tyres this model comes with an assist arm as standard and is powered by a three phase motor which requires a 16amp supply. “A newly launched version of the DTM285HD is now also available which features a unique demounting head with leverlessoperation. The claw is operated pneumatically and eliminates the need for a tyre lever to be used. Furthermore, this model comes as standard with a powerful built-in tubeless inflation system which makes light work of seating beads correctly.”

THE
Road Test
ir Citroen C4 Fla HDi 150
T
HIS MONTH’S road test puts me in the driving seat of the new Citroen C4 Flair. On first appraisal the C4 did not fill me with joy - because in the past I have been less than impressed with the current offerings from Citroën. While most of us will go out and buy what’s currently in fashion and what’s hip in the motoring world, there are still some of us out there like me that would consider an outsider - the underdog as to say. Not that I see the C4 as the
underdog – but it is slap bang in the middle of a very fierce middle sector market. Well to find out if the C4 is as good as the brochure says it is - let’s get a move on and see if it really is a worthy contender to steal some of that market share. Engine: The C4 I currently have on test is powered by a 2.0 -litre 6 speed Turbo charged Diesel engine that has 150HP on tap, which boasts a very respectable top speed of 128mph, plus a 0-62 time of 10.8 seconds. Fuel consumption is also very good with a
combined figure of 74.3 mpg. On the road: It is soft but firm in the corners and very well balanced. A big plus point for this car though is its 370Nm of torque which allows it to pull very well from pretty much any gear. Then there are the brakes, which feel good and firm. As for the suspension - its actually absorbs England’s bumpy roads really well, with minimal roll, although it was a little bouncy, but in its defence, this is a family car - and I have found most family cars to be ‘bouncy’. Inside: As with all Citroens,

better than others I could care to mention. I am going to finish it here, but, I’m going to give the C4 four stars in this test, not only because I like its looks, but because I believe it’s worth taking a look at if you are in the market for good family car. Plus if you are trying to help ‘save the planet’ the C4 has some of the best green credentials - with CO2 emissions starting as low as 98g/km. Tip of the day: The C4 is a Wolf in sheep’s clothing.

the interior is of a good standard – lots of chrome fittings and clear dials. But, as I have said many times, Things still feel a little cheap inside the cabin. There are items that of course need a better touch or feel, but I accept for the C4’s price, you are getting good value for money in terms of equipment. Standard equipment is good such as, ABS/EBD/EBA, hill start assist, driver and front passenger lateral and curtain airbags, iPod/MP3 connection, childlocks on the rear doors, air conditioning, six speakers, steering wheel-mounted audio control and folding rear bench seat. One thing that Citroën does do very well is that you do get a very tidy amount of equipment to keep you happy. Let’s not forget the brilliant media sound system which Includes satellite navigation, a seven inch colour touch-screen, display, DAB radio tuner and Bluetooth audio with USB connectivity. Remember this car is one of the top models in the C4 range, and yet it only costs from £20,045. So, as far as I am concerned you get a lot for your money, plus I really do think it has something more to offer than the normal run of the mill motor you might get from other manufacturers. Plus, why not go for something totally different? The C4 is a good looking car that drives as good as or even

he importance of having diagnostic tools in a workshop should never been under-played, because unless it’s working solely on classics, there’s likely to be a daily need for the electronic diagnostics’ gizmo. But while the industry concentrates so much on electronic tools, it almost seems to forget that the task isn’t completed until a part is either repaired or replaced. And that’s where hand tools step-in. Workshops couldn’t survive without screwdrivers, sockets, spanners and torque wrenches. And today there’s a rise in more job-specific tools, including those designed for timing belt repair and replacement. Too often taken for granted yet so often not given the respect
they deserve, the hand tool’s role is as important as ever. GSF, which through its Garage Essentials programme sells a range of hand tools, says there is a shift towards new brands. At the same time, more motor factors are selling into workshops, it says. “It’s hard to think of garage hand tools without comparing everything back to a certain US brans with lots of van sales, but the market’s really developed now, with more suppliers offering better ranges, with the right back-up,” says GSF Garage Essentials programme manager, John Wright. “We cherry pick products and offers from a group of leading brands, direct sourcing or manufacturing quality products in the best factories. This means specification and price are as good as anything out there.” Both quality and price are deciding factors when it comes to choosing tools, but those elements are not mutually exclusive. GSF says technicians are more clued-up about savings they can make, which in some cases can be 50 percent when buying from a factor rather than a ‘man in a van’. Shaeffler has several tools available to tackle tricky jobs, enabling a technician to the job both more quickly and more accurately. One is a tool from Klann, which, when working on Mercedes-Benz Sprinters, Vianos and VW Grafters allows the front wheel bearing to be changed in situ, rather than having to carry out a complete knuckle replacement, followed by a wheel alignment set-up. To help workshops determine whether a DMF unit is ready for replacement LuK has a tool designed to measure freeplay, the wear that occurs between the arc springs, and rock, which
measures wear between the two masses. “At least 50 percent of DMFs have a friction control device that restricts the movement of the secondary mass during periods of high torque, thus protecting the arc springs. The tool can be used for all DMFs, whether fitted with a friction control device or
not, to determine wear status,” Schaeffler says. While clutch replacement has become potentially more tricky, so too has fitting new spark plugs, the problem coming from continued on page 34 >

Alternator service life extended Workshops can save motorists money with INA’s overrunning alternator pulley (OAP) tool kit, which prevents replacement of alternators. OAPs absorb vibrations and fluctuations in front end auxiliary drive systems and then can be tricky to replace. INA’s 15-piece kit tests and installs all OAPs and alternator decouplers fitted in the car parc. “For around £120 a garage can now have the equipment available to test a vehicle’s OAP and, even if it needs a new one, the replacement cost of between £25 and £40 is far less than having to replace the complete alternator, which may typically cost between £150 and £300. This makes perfect sense for the garage as it will keep costs down for the vehicle owner and should help develop customer loyalty,” says Schaeffler technical services manager, Malcolm Short.

Get it right first time Gates’ TechPartner programme brings together factors and workshops in improving servicing and repairs. Under the scheme garages agree to take part in Gates drive systems training and to agree to install parts to correct procedures and using appropriate tools. Training is provided through motor factors, who will carry the specialist tools needed in some cases. “An analysis of claims shows 97% are due to installation errors, but many of those can be eliminated through training, access to good technical support and by using appropriate tools,” says Wim Goossens, Gates Marketing Director, Europe.
how deeply recessed they are in modern engines. Insulators can be damaged by the socket being at an angle, rather than directly on the plug, or the socket slipping off the plug. NGK advises using the shortest possible extension and ensuring it is kept fully on the plug, which keeps the pressure on its hexagon. NGK also has a simple yet ultra low-cost way of installing plugs accurately: “Deeply recessed plugs can be initially installed down on to the seat by using a length of rubber tubing over the insulator. Anyone who has not tried this cheap solution should do so, as it makes difficult to get to situations easier, and can prevent inadvertent cross-threading.” Even using the right socket is important, NGK says: “There are now many vehicles which use spark plugs with a bi-hex design. Selection of the correct suitable socket for the job is crucial to prevent plug damage. The sock-
et, as any conventional hexagon type should incorporate suitable insulator protection inside.” Fitting glow plugs requires equally sensitive treatment, NGK says, and even with new glow plugs fitted, poor starting can persist. This is usually down to excessive carbon build-up, which in turn is detected by the engine management system and lead to premature failure. The solution, NGK says, is: “To initially install glow plugs down on to the taper seat by hand prior to final tightening as the fitter can sense any obstruction easily, thus preventing an operation problem, or damage.” Away from the engine bay and focusing on suspension, Ruville’s torsion bar spring tool is used to make replacement easier and accurate, age-relat-
ed corrosion potentially making the job tricky and time-consuming. Ruville’s slide hammer is 10 times heavier than a main dealer tool and can cope with the most stuck-fast corroded bars, the company says. Lucas Oils’ Tool Box Buddy aerosol is a workshop lubricant and water-dispersant, leaving a protective film to prolong tool life. “It is an ideal solution for a host of lubrication tasks around the workshop, where it can also be used to help free-up bolts and screws. It makes an ideal compliment to Lucas’ Air Tool Lubricant, which is the perfect answer for a range of tools’ issues in and around the tyre bay and workshop,” Lucas says.

oss of productivity through flat power tool batteries could be a thing of the past, thanks to new thinking from Bosch Professional Powertools. With its ‘Wireless Charging System’, Bosch has become the first supplier in the world to harness the advantages of inductive energy transfer to keep cordless tools power-ready. In essence, this new approach is similar in principle to that of a contactless toothbrush charging station. Aimed initially at professionals
Hub nuts from First Line First Line’s on-going commitment to grow its product range and offer the parts that the independent trade really needs means that it will sometimes add the more humble part as well as the more interesting. Hub nuts may not set the heart racing, but for keeping motorists safe while driving, they are vital and the new range complements the existing range of bearing kits. Although many of the hub nuts are already found in a number of its bearing kits, First Line has recognised that during some service and repair procedures, such as CV boot/joint replacement, the nuts need to be removed, which can cause them to be damaged and there-
fore they cannot be reused. The initial range of twenty-two hub nuts caters for the vast majority of the most popular applications and includes car, 4 x
4 and LCV vehicles. For more information, please call the First Line sales team on: 01869 248484 or visit: www. firstlineltd.com.
operating in fixed locations, the idea is that whenever the tool is not being used it should be placed on the charging unit in the user’s work station. Tools can be left on the charger indefinitely or placed there for just a few minutes at a time between jobs. While the system’s main benefit is that jobs are never interrupted or delayed by lack of charge or, worse still, the search for a charged-up replacement battery, the profitability advantage doesn’t end there. Savings are made on battery costs, as only one is needed for the tool. The expense of repairing or replacing equipment damaged by water and dust is also avoided, as there are no vulnerable electrical contact points. “As an innovative market leader, we understand the problems facing professional power tool users and we are always looking for new ways of solving them,” says Steve Hillier, Marketing Director, Bosch Professional Power Tools. “ For the system’s UK launch, Bosch has developed two products: the GAL 1830 W Professional battery charger and the GBA 18 V 2.0 Ah MW-B Professional 18 volt lithium-ion battery. The compact charging kit comes with a mounting frame for convenient attachment to benches or shelves, which serves as a flexible but secure holder for the charger, battery and tool.

Wendy joins FIGIEFA board
On the move? Just appointed?
The Wendy Williamson, chief executive of IAAF, has been appointed to the board and made treasurer of FIGIEFA, the association representing the needs of the European independent automotive aftermarket to governments and legislators of the European Union. The IAAF and FIGIEFA enjoy a very close working relationship, monitoring and contributing to new European legislation affecting the trade. It is this partnership that works to represent the interests of IAAF members in the UK to European and international institutions, promoting the contribution of the independent automotive aftermarket in order to achieve the EU’s goals for a competitive European economy. The IAAF and FIGIEFA work together on a number of issues including type approval, roadworthiness proposals, eCall, telematics and the Connected Car. yundai Motor UK today launches a new short-form comedy film featuring Kelly Brook and Tom Stourton to promote the New Generation i20 small hatchback car and the New Generation i20 Coupe. This is the fifth episode of the ‘Honest Series’, which features hapless Hyundai car salesman, George who, as ever, has to deal with some difficult customers: this time a feuding couple who can’t agree over anything, let alone whether they want the i20 or the i20 Coupe. The
couple are played by model, TV presenter and actress Kelly Brook and Tom Stourton – actor and comedian known for his role in BBC Three Sitcom ‘Siblings’. This pair’s on-screen chemistry turns out to offer far more than viewers expect! The series of films have been created and produced by Red Bee and designed to deliver engaging content with inherent social media currency - as well as showing off Hyundai’s model range, whilst upping the ante of the comedy. Madderson continues Brian Madderson has agreed to continue his role as Chairman of the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA), following a meeting with PRA Executive Committee. Madderson comments, “Since 2010, the PRA has retained 90% of the top 50 independent petrol retailers in membership, with sites totalling over 3,000. Regional committees have been established in both Northern Ireland and Scotland, and we have formed positive relations with key government officials and politicians in all four home countries. “I look forward to recruiting more independent petrol retailers across the UK in the months ahead, and continuing to work closely with my colleagues in growing the PRA.” In addition, Madderson will also continue his role as an Executive Board Director at the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) for a further three years.
this series like a sitcom – not an ad - writing and producing it as you would any other TV comedy. This isn’t only about making the audience laugh; it is also about quickly engaging them with the story and establishing the characters.” Adam Nickson, Head of Brand Strategy and Communications, says: “We wanted to push the boundaries with this new film and to entertain our audience. The latest episode, featuring arguing couple Kelly Brook and Tom Stourton, plays out a situation that many consumers may be able to relate to - we just took things that one step further! “Laughter has long been known for its benefits to health and happiness but it’s also a great way of building positive social relationships and that’s precisely what we hope to achieve with this series.” This campaign is part of Hyundai’s comprehensive digital strategy that addresses the demands of today’s connected customers.
