Happy New Year! by D on Em de

A

s we begin 2017, I am very excited to say this will be our 8th year of producing Parts Europe Magazine. It has been great to work with the team at Parts Europe since they started and to watch them grow each year. We kick off our 2017 editorial schedule with an issue featuring the custom bike that will be on the cover of this year’s Drag Specialties FatBook catalog. That means the 2009 HarleyDavidson Dyna featured on the cover of this issue is the same bike you’ll see on the 2017 FatBook cover. Be sure to

read the story about the project starting on page 24 and how the FatBook was used throughout. Since our last issue, there have been a number of events throughout Europe and we have reports in this issue on three of the biggest: Intermot starts on page 36, EICMA starts on page 50 and Custombike 2016 starts on page 56. The first two are the traditional industry kickoff events for the upcoming year, with dedicated trade and consumer days to show off the all-new motorcycles and scooters, and all the new accessories and riding gear. Last October, Intermot attendance at Koelnmesse exhibition hall in Cologne, Germany exceeded 200,000 trade and consumer visitors. One month later, visitors from 116 countries jammed the halls of the Fiera Milano in Milano, Italy. The Parts Europe sales team was at both events and many orders were booked for the coming season.

Horst Rösler photos

In December, the Custombike Show at the Exhibition Center in Bad Salzuflen, Germany welcomed thousands of visitors from all over Europe. On hand at this year’s show were more than 800 custom motorcycles, 300 exhibitors and 350 competitors in custom bike shows that featured more than a dozen different categories. Parts Europe was there as well with the sales team and plenty of great new products to show. 2017 is here. A whole new year filled with opportunities. Let’s make the most of it. ■

The countdown has already begun for the opening of the 2017 season in Qatar on March 26, 2017. For more info log onto: www.motogp.com. ■ *2016 MotoGP race winners: Marc Marquez (5); Jorge Lorenzo (4); Cal Crutchlow (2); Valentino Rossi (2); 1 each: Andrea Dovizioso, Andrea Iannone, Maverick Vinales, Dani Pedrosa and Jack Miller.

After winning three races in the first half of the season, Jorge Lorenzo struggled late in the season, particularly in the rain at the South Pacific tracks. But the sun shone brightly at Valencia and in his final ride for Yamaha, Lorenzo sped away at the start and led all the way to the finish.

Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez (93) battles with Team Suzuki Ecstar rider Maverick Vinales in the early going of the race. Marquez finished 2nd while Vinales faded back to 5th. In 2017 Vinales will move from Suzuki to fill Lorenzo’s seat for Yamaha.

On the podium Jorge Lorenzo (middle) celebrates his 4th victory of the season. Marc Marquez (left) was slight less excited with a runner-up race finish, but had the satisfaction of knowing he had won the 2016 MotoGP World Championship. Andrea Iannone’s 3rd place finish gave the Italian rider some consolation, but also sadness knowing it was his last race for Ducati. In 2017 Lorenzo takes his seat at Ducati and Iannone moves to Suzuki. 2016 MotoGP Top Ten

News with Style – the Dealer Bulletin

A

fter collecting feedback from dealers all over Europe, Parts Europe has revamped its main dealer newsletter and has launched the new and improved, Dealer Bulletin!

The new dealer communication tool has changed from a text-based concept to an icon-based design that features pictures and short summaries for each topic, to make it more attractive and easier to use. Every bulletin starts with a large icon highlighting the most important topic dealers should not miss. Below this icon there is news in the following categories — Sales programs, Products, Catalogs and Events. The new design ends with an offer from Special Sales. All icons are clickable and lead dealers to the Parts Europe website where detailed information can be found. Another interesting feature is the “Special Sales” icon. Dealers will

be linked directly to the web shop with all filters set to find the specific offer of the week. The different segments of the powersport market are marked with a specific color-coding, for example there is green for off-road and blue for V-twin. The goal is to help readers find out the offers and information that are most suited for them. The team behind the new Dealer Bulletin has already received a lot of positive feedback, however it will continue to refine and improve the service. ■

W

ith Intermot in Cologne and EICMA in Milan both happening back-to-back last fall, the main question everybody had was: Will visitors pack into both shows?

After a successful show in Cologne, the Parts Europe events team was left wondering if they would have similar crowds in Milan. As usual, Italian powersports fans did not disappoint. According to Parts Europe the event exceeded all expectations, attracting hundreds of thousands of attendees. Following the Intermot fair, Parts Europe decided to build a smaller booth to show new products, and to announce the distributor’s collaboration with the well-known Italian suspension, Bitubo. To best serve the halls of showgoers in Italy, Parts Europe provided a large section for FMF, Icon, Klock Werks, Memphis Shades, Neken, S&S Cycle, Thor, and WASP. Product specialists were on hand to answer all dealer and consumer

questions, and help Parts Europe sales reps and sales agents get to know the various product lines. The first two days of the EICMA show were open only to dealers and the moto press. Right when the doors were opened, the Parts Europe booth was flooded by highly interested dealers from Italy, France, Spain, Hungary, and Poland, just to a name a few countries. Editors from nearly all the European powersports magazines also stopped by the booth to have a chat about Parts Europe’s growth and development, and – of course – all the new products. “We are not the new kids of the block anymore,” said Bettina Antony, team leader for press and events. “We received positive feedback about the way we are acting in the market; reliable, consistent and serious.” Italian enthusiasts are passionate and were attracted to Icon’s uniquely designed lineup of helmets and apparel. Younger fans stopped in to check out the off-road bikes

NEWS EVENTS Lyrén Wins Pro Stock Championship PARTS EUROPE SALES REP DOMINATES 2016

P

arts Europe sales rep Karl Lyrén was named the 2016 EDRS Pro Nordic Motorcycle Champion after a stellar season of Pro Stock drag racing. Lyrén started the race season in good spirits after recording his best time ever at the first race of the NHRA drag racing series in America. At the race in Gainesville, FL, USA, Lyrén went 6.96 seconds, his best results on the bike. After that race, he shipped shipped the bike back home to Sweden where he qualified as No. 1 in all rounds at the first race in Tierp, Sweden. In the second race in Alastaro, Finland Lyrén pulled his first 6-second run outside the USA with a 6.98. Unfortunately rain put a damper on the racing, but Lyrén was still leading the championship. At the third race in Gardermoen, Norway on a brand new track, Lyrén was the No. 1 qualifier and fastest in all rounds.

Once again, rain ended the weekend’s racing. During the last event of the season back in Tierp, Lyrén was the fastest of all riders, pulling a 6.98 second on day one. During the last race day on Sunday, Lyrén won all heats and the final, and did another 6.98 second run to clinch the title. Lyrén and his team said they had a great time with VIP guests and dealers visiting the races. The goal for next season is to not only keep the championship, but also to get even more dealers to visit the races and see this spectacular sport. Lyrén thanked Bobster, Drag Specialties, Icon, and Zan Headgear for their support, and said that as a racer and a sales rep he appreciated the backing of Parts Europe. “Racing combined with the daily business worked well,” he said. “Being a part of such a strong team like Parts Europe/Drag Specialties is awesome. See you in the next season on the racetrack.” ■

A FATBOOK TAKE ON A CLASSIC LOOK

I

t’s a build style going by any number of names, depending on who’s doing the talking. Some call it “West Coast.” Others name it “Club,” “Outlaw,” or even “Thug.” Whatever the name it’s all the rage lately, and it’s nothing new. The style has been around for years just like the HarleyDavidson model it’s built on, the venerable Dyna. Harley Dynas, as plenty of riders know, are just plain fun. They’re cheap, they’re plentiful, they’re fast as all get out, they handle extremely well, and more to the point here, they’re

a blank canvas ready to be turned into a masterpiece. In this case, it’s the 2017 FatBook cover bike, a 2009 F-model, a Fat Bob given that classic treatment by Joe Houpt and team at Suburban Harley-Davidson with plenty of help from the inside pages of that very catalog. Talk about an invitation to throw a leg over the saddle. Dynas done up this way, cool looking as they are, are all about usability, rideability, dependability and their all-around performance. With that in mind Joe and the guys at Suburban kept this FXDF’s engine reliably mild.

The profile is perfect, a classic Dyna – whatever the style – rolling on Pirelli Night Dragons.

It’s all business behind this fairing. The LA Choppers BMX handlebars mount on Biltwell’s 10-inch risers.

However, with the addition of a *Bassani Road Rage III 2-into-1 exhaust, a deep breathing *Trask Assault Charge air filter and an FI re-map courtesy of the *Vance & Hines FP3 fuel controller, there’s more than enough oomph on hand to make things interesting. To keep everything on track and pointed in the right direction, the team added an Alloy Art frame/motor stabilizer, along with Performance Machine’s Platinum Cut Formula wheels and some pretty hefty Pirelli Night Dragon rubber. Braking got a boost with Arlen Ness calipers, Performance Machine Formula rotors and all new lines, hoses and fitting straight from the FatBook. A set of Drag Specialties’ new Ride Height Adjustable Shocks made the cut, too. While Drag Specialties carries the Performance Machine Platinum Cut Formula wheels, rear rotor and pulley for many Harley models, it doesn’t have the specific Dyna fitment/sizes of those pieces used in this build, but they can easily be special ordered. Talk with your Drag rep about making a special order.

With all this taken care of, attention then turned to the look, and just as importantly the rider-interface with the machine. And the most noticeable addition for all of that is the FXRT-style fairing. Russ Wernimont Designs’ FXRT fairing is a dead-nuts version of what’s probably the slipperiest windcheater the Motor Company ever produced, and it’s a straight bolt-on to a Dyna. A Klock Werks’ Flare windshield was added for superior air management. They also used LA Choppers BMX handlebars on Biltwell 10-inch risers to put the controls up where they belong for this style. To get the rider in the right spot, a Drag Specialties Low Solo seat went in place. Dynas like this are all about the riding, all kinds of riding, so a set of Joker Machine’s Serrated Footpegs went on for a firm foothold when the action gets hot. Form wasn’t forgotten in all this function, so while some might have preferred the total blacked-out, badass approach, that isn’t mandatory and it sure wasn’t done here. Look this one over from stem to stern. There are shiny

The RWD fairing is a straight bolt-on. This one is mounted with a short Klock Werks FXRT Flare windshield.

bits everywhere. Sure, there’s plenty of black, but interspersed throughout there’s shiny. It’s in the mirrors, in the handlebar risers, the derby cover, the air filter, that cool little Speed Merchant skid plate up front, and even on the pipes. Then there’s that paint job, something decidedly not black. It’s the handiwork of Jason LeCavalier and Artistimo Custom Bike in Waukesha, WI., USA. Multi-shades of blue put down in a panel-pattern that’s at once both contemporary and fresh, yet still nods back to the Larry Watson and Bellflower, CA., USA cruise nights of the 1960s. We’ll all be seeing plenty of this bike over the next year. When it’s out with the Drag Specialties Show Truck it’ll definitely be worth the time to stop by and take an up-close look. In the meantime have a peek here, and at the Build Sheet accompanying these photos. So, call it what you want, it doesn’t matter. Whatever the style, it’s a Dyna that’s as cool as cool comes. And, it’s ready for action. ■

Coming or going it’s clean, simple and ready for action. It’s easy to see why this Dyna is the 2017 FatBook Cover Bike.

hen it comes to off-road riding gear, every piece worn serves a very important and specific purpose. Conditions out on the trail or on the track can get pretty rough so most riders want to make sure they’re prepared for any situation.

The goggles nicely complement the company’s lineup of riding gear, whether its racewear like the Sahara, M1 or Qualifier series, or outerwear like the ADV1, Expedition and XCR lines. No matter how your customers take to the dirt — motocross, off-road or Adventure — Moose Racing has a setup for them.

Helmets are the obvious first choice, and gloves and good riding boots are always welcome when out bushwhacking. Take a look at those boots after a long day of kicking up roost and the evidence is right there. And then there’s the item that runs high on the list of importance — a good pair of quality goggles.

First up in the goggle range is the Qualifier Slash model, which comes packed with value at a great price. The Slash features a flexible, yet durable, molded, well-vented frame. A scratch-resistant and anti-fog coating protects the optically pure, clear polycarbonate lens. The Slash’s large eyeport gives riders maximum vision in all the necessary directions.

Eye protection is vital when the conditions are dusty and dirty, and especially imperative when rocks and other debris are flying. Your customers need to protect their eyes so point them toward Moose Racing’s new range of goggles for 2017. Moose Racing has three styles of goggles available at price points that are likely pretty attractive to all levels of buyers. From entry level to the top model, these goggles are packed full of protection, features and the kind of quality that Moose puts into all of its products.

The goggle’s elastic strap is embedded with a tacky grip print to hold it firmly in place on the shell of a slippery helmet. And, because keeping out dust and dirt is so important, the molded face foam fits securely and snugly. The middle range goggle, the Qualifier Shade is also built from a flexible, durable and vented molded frame. The face foam on the Shade is dual-density and a comfortable fleece backing that not only wicks away sweat, but also provides a seal against dust and dirt.

The third goggle in the lineup is the Qualifier SE — with SE standing for Special Edition. What makes it special? A wood grain graphic on the tough and flexible molded frame provides a super trick look. The SE would make a standout addition to any rider’s gear bag. Like the other two in the range, the Special Edition goggle has all the features that help it wick away moisture and fit

comfortably against a person’s face. There’s also that nodistortion optically pure mirror smoke lens that’s resistant to scratching and fogging, as well as the tacky grip elastic strap and large eyeport. For all of these goggles Moose Racing offers tear-offs and replacement lenses that come in a range of colors including blue, clear, smoke, silver mirrored and yellow. Off-road riders — on two-wheels or four — should always wear helmets, eye protection and protective clothing. Let those in your customer base know about the great products from Moose Racing. ■

As the name implies, the Shade’s lens is mirror smoked and offers an optically pure view. It also has the special scratch-resistant and anti-fog coating. he numbers tell the story. Cometic Gasket lists more than 85,000 different part numbers for all the high-performance gaskets and seals they offer. That’s enough gaskets and seals to cover virtually everything in powersport, from streetbikes to the big American V-twins, and everything in between. So when it comes time for a gasket or seal for any of those machines, as it always does, where do you turn? Smart parts managers, mechanics and tuners have turned to Cometic for years.

Harley-Davidson V-twin to the smallest 2-stroke, Cometic manufactures its gaskets from a comprehensive range of materials. Whether the situation calls for the latest in advanced technologies like the MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) gaskets or the company’s case gaskets made from AFM (Aluminum Foamette Material), Cometic develops it and delivers it. And, that development never stops. Consider, as just one example, what Cometic has available for that V-twin and crusier market, all the head gaskets, base gaskets, seals and complete engine and transmission gasket kits for the new Indians, the entire Victory

More than that, it’ll be a gasket or seal they can count on to combine the most advanced materials with the most current manufacturing processes. It’s what’s made Cometic a popular choice the world over. None of this is surprising. Cometic Gasket, based in Concord, Ohio, USA, has been dedicated to powersport since its beginning in 1989. Today Cometic also supplies its engine-sealing solutions to the automotive, marine and industrial fields, even to OEMs, but it was powersport that started it all. Piston Primer

Answering Engine-Building Questions

A

t the heart of every dirtbike, motocross bike, ATV or UTV are its pistons, and when those pistons need replacing, riders ask questions. Is a cast piston recommended, or should it be a forging? What are the differences, what works best where? For more than 60 years experienced engine builders have turned to Vertex for those answers, and for the pistons.

(4032) alloys with T6 or T61 heat treatments. The result is a strong, lightweight, low-drag piston that assures a low expansion rate under the stress of high temperatures. Every Vertex piston is machined to exacting tolerances, attention focused not only on the overall profiles, but also on the radial flatness of the ring grooves and the shape, size and alignment of the pin bores. Vertex pistons receive a special anti-friction skirt coating, a molybdenum-impregnated membrane with a unique cushioning property to dramatically reduce harsh contact between the piston skirt and the cylinder bore. All this allows that high-compression 4-stroke to produce and maintain peak power in the hardest, harshest conditions.

Vertex has a variety of pistons available for a wide range of applications – everything from fuel-injected 2-stroke engines to high-compression 4-strokes.

But as good as those Vertex forged pistons are they’re not always the first pick. In certain applications, modern fuel-injected 2-strokes engines for instance, a cast piston can be a much better choice. Vertex has these, here again using only the finest metals, permanent-mold VP 127 (eutectic), VP178 (hypereutectic) and VP205 (hypereutectic and resistant to high temperatures) alloys with T5 or T6 heat treatments. (Hypereutectic and eutectic refer to the percentage of silicon added to the alloy, which affects expansion.) When needed by the specific application, these pistons even get an anodized coating on the skirt and/or pin bore. Every piston is finish-machined to precisely control its shape, size and alignment for consistency and top performance.

With a full lineup available, including all the latest 2017 applications, Vertex has the right piston every time. So which is the right choice, forged or cast? Here’s what Vertex has to say. Forged pistons are generally preferred for use in highcompression 4-stroke engines. For these applications Vertex has its slipper-skirt forgings, all manufactured from high quality aircraft materials — VP-310 (2618) or VP-300

Those Vertex piston profiles, both forged and cast, are the result of years spent in close collaboration with top tuners combined with Vertex’s own engineering data detailing material expansion coefficients, cylinder types and coatings, cooling systems and more. Every Vertex piston, in all applications and sizes right up to the latest 2017 models, comes complete and ready to install. ■

he 2017 off-road and racing season is here, and it’s certain that riders will outfit themselves with the newest gear available. Just like those offroad and motocross bikes that take a beating, a rider’s gear leads a hard life, too. At the start of every season, replacements are in order and rare indeed is the rider who’ll pass up the chance to pick up some new gear in the latest styles, colors and graphics. Thor has everything they’re looking for. New racewear kits? There’s plenty here to catch a rider’s eye, like the brand-new Fuse and Fuse Air kits and the totally redesigned Pulse and Pulse Air, all available in a rainbowwide variety of colors and graphics. Thor has plenty to go with those race kits, too, like all-new gloves and goggles with more features and color-choices than ever. The Fuse and Fuse Air kits raise the bar for motocross apparel. A fresh design from the ground up, this tailored-fit racewear features a flexible pre-curved knee in the pant and a jersey with a comfortable three-quarter collar. Fuse

The jerseys have raglan sleeves for great mobility in the arms and shoulders, and the rolled cuffs and collars minimize chafing. There are vented mesh panels in all the crucial areas maximizing airflow. A drop-tail design keeps the jersey tucked in. The Fuse pant is built for maximum flexibility — there are stretch panels throughout along with accordion knee panels and the pre-curved profile just naturally fits a rider in the active riding position. And, it’s all tough, abrasionresistant polyester and nylon, double and triple stitched and made to last. When riding conditions get hot there’s the Fuse Air. Added ventilation in the jersey and pants allows more breathability, while still providing plenty of Thor durability. Also new to the 2017 collection is the redesigned Pulse and Pulse Air kits. Like the Fuse and Fuse Air, excess material was eliminated for a refined fit. The pants have more stretch panels in the seat and the legs, along with adjustable cinches on the hips and the jersey has a fourway stretch collar. The Pulse pant has that pre-curved shape for maximum comfort, and there are full-grain leather knee panels. Thor has even added features like a mesh liner, interior hip pocket and adjustable cinches and closures to tailor the fit. It’s all abrasion-tolerant and just like the Fuse Air, there’s a maximum-ventilation Pulse Air in the lineup, too. With three new graphics and a total of six new colorways available, affordable racewear never looked this good. This season Thor also has one of the biggest and best selections of gloves it has ever offered. Included in this mix are new color options for the durable Spectrum and lightweight Void. Spectrum, that do-it-all glove, adds Flo Pink/Black and Powder Blue to the long list of colors while Void introduces two entirely new models — Bits and Louda. Bits comes in Blue/White, Orange/Black, and Yellow/Black to mix and match with any jersey/pant combo and Louda features a Blue and Black Checkered pattern on top of a Yellow and Pink background.

You’ll want to take a look at Thor’s goggles for 2017, too, especially the all-new Combat. The Combat’s frame, available in eight colors, provides a wide field of vision through its anti-fog and scratch-resistant polycarbonate lens and the lining is plush, single layer 12mm foam. The Combat is also available in a Sand model with six color choices, high-density foam to keep out small particles and a smoke lens for added UV protection. ■ The Void Louda model

he motorcycle industry is introducing its 2017 lines of motorcycles and the new modern-classic bikes are hotter than ever. Whether it is Ducati’s growing line of Scramblers, Triumph’s resurrected Bonneville line-up, or Yamaha’s Sport Heritage Bolts and SCRs, the segment is growing and the machines are amazing. True vintage bikes and old café machines also continue to grow in popularity. The customers who purchase and ride these new and old classics want to look the part in their riding gear, often opting for the timeless look of an openface helmet. AFX has just the helmet they’re looking for, and it’s loaded with up-to-date safety features. The FX-76 from AFX is one of the company’s most popular helmets, and it now comes in two new styles — the Raceway and the Speed Racer. The graphics on the Raceway

met is its EPS liner, the part that absorbs energy to reduce the chance of head injuries. The FX-76 uses an advanced Cone-Head, ultra-light EPS protection system that is engineered to be lighter and fit closer to the rider’s head. Inside the FX-76, the interior and cheek pads are made of a hypoallergenic and antimicrobial nylon combined with perforated leather for that vintage look and feel. There is even ample space to install speakers for audio or bike-tobike communications systems. The FX-76 also features a race-approved double D-ring strap system. The Raceway and Speed Racer are the latest models in the FX-76 multi-color line-up. Graphics and colors also offered include: Line Graphic Gold Metal Flake, Line Graphic White Metal Flake, Line Graphic Orange Metal Flake, Route 66 Flat Black, MCQ Graphic Pearl White, and MCQ Graphic

bout one month after the close of the Intermot show, all eyes and attention turned to Milan, Italy for the EICMA Motorcycle Exhibition.

As expected, the show in November was an extravaganza of new motorcycle unveilings, with manufacturers revealing new models covering every genre of riding. The range included cruisers, sportbikes, Adventure bikes, dualsports, scooters, motocross machines, and off-road racers. One major trend showgoers saw was the commitment to smaller displacement bikes designed to offer affordable good looks and rideability to entry-level riders and emerging motorcycle markets in Asia and around the world. Of course Parts Europe had the aftermarket well covered with its booth showcasing popular brands such as FMF, Icon, Klock Werks, S&S Cycle, and Thor. Product specialists and sales reps were sure to answer all dealer and consumer questions about the various product lines. The four-day event took place November 10th to 13th at the Fiera Milano. Here’s a roundup of images from photographer Horst Rösler.

lpinestars’ motocross and off-road riding gear has been designed and developed to offer high levels of comfort and performance. Just ask the likes of Eli Tomac, Justin Barcia or Jeffrey Herling. All of them rely on the products, not only for the rigors of toplevel competition, but also for the daily demands of training. From jerseys, pants and gloves to boots and protection, Alpinestars provides the complete motocross and off-road package for various riding situations — and a distinctive style and look — to ensure athletes, amateurs and youth riders can tackle the dirt with confidence. Take, for example, Alpinestars’ premium motocross range, the Techstar that incorporates advanced materials and construction techniques that are fully optimized for comfort and riding performance. The Techstar range features two uniquely styled lines, the Factory and the Venom. Made from advanced poly-fabric the Techstar jersey is extremely lightweight and moisture wicking with plenty of airflow. Its engineered design means it can be worn with Alpinestars BNS neck support, as well as with Alpinestars’ motocross pants. The Techstar pants have been built to withstand the demands of the toughest dirt tracks, with features such as the ergonomic, patented Babel knee design and the ‘Vector’ back panel for optimized levels of flex and performance fit. The pants also incorporate newly developed advanced four-way stretch panels that are strategically positioned on the thighs for unrestricted freedom of movement,

regardless of the riding position. The four-way stretch panels are constructed from an advanced poly-fabric with stretch Elastane, providing a lightweight and anatomically adaptive fit. Alpinestars’ Racer apparel range — the Braap and Supermatic — features aggressive designs and distinctive color combos. The gear is also available in youth-specific sizes. The jerseys, made from a light poly textile for efficient moisture management and durability, feature a stretch collar neck construction with tapered wrist cuffs for fit and comfort. With an anatomically profiled design, a large rear stretch panel insert, a 3D knee construction for freedom of movement, and extensive lightweight mesh inserts, the Racer Braap and Supermatic pants for adults and youth offer excellent levels of comfort and performance for off-road racing. Gloves are a critical part of your apparel for motocross and off-road riding and Alpinestars new expanded line for 2017 offers improved ergonomic design and comfort, as well as excellent sensitivity on the bike’s levers. Premium quality materials and performance engineering is what distinguishes the lightweight Techstar, Aviator, Radar, Dune, and Racefend gloves. There are Clarino palm reinforcements, silicone grip patterning, pre-curved fingers and an innovative stretch insert on palm and thumb area for improved hand movement and lever control. ■

or more than 50 years, Alpinestars has been a leading force in the global motocross and offroad scene. Via state-of-the-art R&D facilities in the U.S. and Europe and an extensive off-road testing program, Alpinestars today consistently delivers products at the cutting-edge of technology. The new A-10 Full Chest Protector is a case in point. Fusing decades of off-road experience in protection and performance with a pioneering and innovative ‘exoskeletal’ design, the A-10 Full Chest is extremely lightweight and convenient to wear, while offering excellent protective coverage. On the A-10 all unnecessary material is stripped away, leaving only the core protective structure, which works in conjunction with the natural movements of the body. The anatomical protector plates feature an innovative grid technology on the underside, which absorbs and dissipates impact forces. The exoskeletal design helps achieve this by using a connected matrix of cells that, during an impact, compress and interlock to immediately and efficiently dissipate the energy force across the cellular structure. Using this grid technology cell system also has an additional performance benefit; it enables greater flexibility and air ventilation while allowing for significantly reduced weight. The A-10 Full Chest reaches full CE certification: Back (EN 1621_2: 2014 level 2,) chest (prEN 1621_3: Level 2 full chest Type A) and shoulders (EN 1621_1 : 2012 level 1 Type A.)

and weight saving. Anatomically contoured for improved structural strength, the shells feature perforation zones and air channeling for excellent airflow across the body, even on the hottest of rides. Another feature of the A-10 Full Chest Protector is its versatile modular design, which gives riders the option to remove plates to customize and configure the system with levels of protection perfectly adapted to the terrain or to the customer’s individual preferences. With removable upper back and front panels and a soft touch puller for convenient and safe engagement of the BNS neck support, the A-10 can also be configured to accommodate Alpinestars BNS neck support, thus ramping up a rider’s protective coverage. The A-10 full chest panel incorporates removable EVA padding on the biceps, with a locking system on the shoulder pad that helps keep the protection in place. The soft bio foam padded chassis gives maximum comfort and close fit. The side adjustable kidney belt allows for various fit sizes and ensures it stays close to the body at all times. As an alternative to the A-10 Full Chest Protector, a member of the A-10 family, the CE certified A-10 Chest Protector, is available, which shares all the same features as the Full Chest version but comes without the shoulder protection. ■

custombike EVENT REPORT

2016

ow in its 12th year, the Custombike Show returned to the Exhibition Center in Bad Salzuflen, Germany and welcomed thousands of visitors from all over Europe. On hand at this year’s show in early December were more than 800 custom motorcycles, 300 exhibitors and 350 competitors for custom bike shows that featured more than a dozen different categories. Parts Europe was present and accounted for with a huge booth highlighting many of the company’s popular vendors. Sales staff and product specialists offered showgoers detailed information about such products as riding apparel from Icon; American Kargo backpacks, hydration packs and gear bags; S&S Cycle motors, and a host of Drag Specialties items. Anyone visiting the show in hopes of seeing some wild – and mild – custom bikes definitely got an eyeful. Occupying its own entire floor, the Save the Choppers featured more than 30 historic choppers, highlighting examples of the unique custom style from around the world and across the brands ranging from Harley-Davidson to BMW. The Custombike Build-Off saw Parts Europe vendor and French EMD manufacturer Nicolas Pigeyre (see our story on EMD on page 60) square off against Heidelberg-based Martin Becker of MB Cycles, who won the competition. Other show highlights included the popular Wall of Death attraction, a fire show by the Fuel Girls, and drawings for a new BMW R Nine T and a Harley-Davidson Sportster.

V-TWIN STYLE

During the past five years, EMD has become a popular name in the V-twin scene, with a customer base that goes far beyond Europe. He also exports to Japan and the United States, among other places. Pigeyre’s own personal motorcycles serve as show bikes that are outfitted with EMD parts. You can find photos of them on the EMD Facebook page. Pigeyre says that EMD is famous for its Sportster components, although the company’s Twin Cam and EVO parts sales are on the rise – all of the parts are made to give a vintage vibe to modern bikes. The line includes a broad range of covers, including cam covers, primary covers, sprocket covers and rocker covers.

Nicolas Pigeyre is the man behind Esteves Motorcycle Design, a manufacturer of classically designed V-twin parts and accessories now available through Parts Europe.

A

ccording to Nicolas Pigeyre, the Harley-Davidson scene in France is one of the biggest in Europe, and as the owner of Esteves Motorcycle Design, he’s more than happy to help all those enthusiasts customize their V-twins. Based in Saint-Chély d’Apcher, a picturesque town in southern France, EMD was originally known as Esteves Mechanical Design, produced airplane and machine parts, and did custom welding and milling jobs. Twenty years ago Pigeyre purchased the company and in 2011 added the motorcycle line because he was an enthusiast himself. The company started with just a few Twin Cam and Triumph parts, but it quickly grew into a full inventory of options for Harley-Davidsons. The company still produces specialized machinery and other parts, but it’s the motorcycle side of the business where Pigeyre has found his passion.

EMD’s Vitamin A (left) and Vitamin C headlight buckets will add a serious touch of style to any custom build.

A ribbed design, inspired by 1942 Flathead cylinder heads, can be found in many of the cover configurations. The ribbed cam cover is made of die-cast aluminum with a CNC-milled gasket surface. The EMD cam covers are easy to install and utilize the OEM mounting hardware. Ribbed rocker covers are manufactured to the same standards and sold by the pair. The XL cam cover for Ironhead Sportsters also has a ribbed design, but this cast aluminum piece fits directly over the OEM cam cover and is held in place with three included Allen bolts and spacers. The trim can be notched at the upper front to make room for an OEM breather, if needed. EMD’s light housings include two models, the Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Both are available in three finishes. While the Vitamin A design has a smooth housing, the Vitamin C headlight bucket has scalloped edges. Wheel covers in 16-inch, 17-inch, and 18-inch sizes add a distinct look by completely covering the existing wheel. Available in black or raw aluminum options, the covers are sold by the pair and will need to be drilled to allow tire valve clearance.

A Great One-Two Combo for UTVs

W

hen it comes to parts upgrades for UTVs and Side-by-Sides, those new aftermarket products better provide three features. They have to add some extra bling to that four-wheeler, and they better be sturdier and tougher than the OE components or, ideally, they better have a combination of both. Long a popular choice in Moose Utility Division’s custom wheel lineup, the 387X is not only a real workhorse, it looks great installed on those machines. Now the team at Moose has upped the ante a bit by introducing two new color options for the well-liked wheel. In addition to that standard gloss black or machine finish, the 387X is now available in a brilliant blue and a stunning red. All colorways include a chrome center cap and rivets are standard, but lug nuts must be ordered separately.

they’ll stand up to the company’s very rigid standards. Again, ATV and UTV owners really put their machines to work. Of course, Moose Utility Division also has tires some pretty hefty tires to go along with those burly wheels, a lineup that includes the Switchback and the 8-Ball tires. Both models are Reach compliant and Emarked so you know they’ve met the stringent requirements of the market. Moose Utility Division now has two new color options for its popular 387X wheels.

The Switchback was designed with tough use in mind, and was specifically built to give ATV and UTV owners the highest optimal performance in mud, sand, snow and hard pack. An aggressive tread design helps give riders traction in slippery mud, and loose dry dirt terrain. A wide tread pattern provides plenty of contact patch. The 8-Ball is designed from the inside out for tough, no-nonsense usage. The tire features 8-ply radial construction, meaning it can withstand the weight of those big UTVs. Rugged in appearance, the 8-Ball sports a black sidewall and is available in two sizes — 26x9R14 and 26x11R14.

Sure they’re extra pretty now, but what about real-world usage? Moose Utility Division changed nothing when adding the two new options. That 387X wheel is still just as rugged and tough as it was when it was first introduced. These aluminum wheels are ready to hit the trail as

soon as they’re bolted up. Designed to shoulder a load, the 12x7 front wheel can handle capacities up to 175.5 kgs, while the rear 12x8 wheel can take up to 522 kgs. These load ratings meet or exceed all current market requirements so you can bet they’ll stand up those big, popular machines. The wheels are also available in 14x7 and 14x8 sizes. Moose Utility Division even thoroughly X-rays the wheels while they’re on the production line to make sure that

The tire features a tread design that not only provides plenty of bite and traction out in the wet sloppy mud, but also performs well on the hard pack. In addition to being built for those big UTVs, the 8-Ball tire is also constructed to have a better resistance against punctures. Moose Utility Division’s 387X wheels and E-marked and Reach compliant tires really pack a punch when paired up, and they strike a slick profile to any of those hard working four-wheelers. ■

Blacked-Out Upgrades

Shocks, Fork Kits for Harley-Davidsons

itubo is a name well known in racing circles. Its innovative shock absorbers featuring two compensating rubber pipes are favorites among performance riders worldwide.

Bitubo’s suspension upgrades also include steering dampers and fork kits and most recently, a new range of blacked-out shock absorbers dedicated exclusively to Harley-Davidsons. The shocks were first introduced at the 2016 Verona Motor Bike Expo. There are three new fork upgrade kits for those Harleys, as well, with lots of options and choices.

Bitubo’s new fork upgrade kits for Harley-Davidson offer three levels of performance and function.

The springs, custom-wound with oil tempered steel wire alloy, are totally blacked out matching the bodies. Black spring covers are available, as well. They look great, but with these shocks it’s not just about that look. Both versions are pressurized with nitrogen and equipped with a floating aluminum piston separating the oil and gas. The WME02V2 also offers adjustable rebound damping and a milli-metric adjustment for the spring preload ring. Next up is the WMT02V2, another blacked-out set of shocks, but this time Bitubo has taken twin-shock HarleyDavidson suspension to the next level. With the dark look

This is possible thanks to careful suspension tuning on Bitubo’s part, the wealth of adjustments available and pressurized nitrogen in a separate tank. The WMT02V2 allows spring preload adjustment with a step-less micrometric ring, rebound adjustment (with five or seven clicks, or step-less) and compression adjustment with a 12-click knob on the separate tank. or more than 50 years, S&S Cycle has focused on producing go-fast parts for those 45-degree V-twin powered motorcycles, everything from OE Harley-Davidsons to radical mile-munching customs. It’s what they’ve been doing since George J. Smith first started building parts to make his own bikes go faster. It’s a singular vision that’s resulted a broad range of power-boosting products including a line of EC-approved air cleaners, among them are the popular Stealth Air Cleaner kits. The Stealth features a built-in stinger cone in the filter that directs air smoothly into the bore of the EFI throttle body. This reduces turbulence and increases airflow. There are fitments of the EC-approved Stealth for HarleyDavidson 103-inch and 110-inch Dynas and Softails, up to model year 2016, as well as for 883 and 1200 Sportsters with EFI up to model year 2016. Incidentally, that RaceTEX packing is a sound deadening material that’s designed to last longer and be more effective than traditional fiberglass packing. The Mk45 slip-ons offer performance and good looks. They’re available in show quality chrome for those riders who would accept nothing but, and in Jet-Hot, a black ceramic finish that looks like it was invented for making motorcycles look good. As a bonus, there’s a lifetime guarantee on the Jet-Hot black coating. To round things out, S&S offers two different style aluminum end-caps, the Thruster or the Tracer. Each of these comes in either chrome or black and silver, both putting a fine point on a great looking exhaust. ■

In dreaming up this beauty, the team at S&S looked to the company’s decades of riding, racing and tuning to design and build a pipe that cranks out extra horsepower and looks great.

New for Milwaukee-Eight Baggers

C

obra Engineering is on the gas in the aftermarket Harley-Davidson exhaust market with five new exhaust products developed for Harley-Davidson’s new 2017 Bagger models. Each of these mufflers comes with Cobra’s Limited Lifetime Warranty. Because of the new 8-valve engine that powers the 2017 Baggers, these mufflers are more than just lightly modified versions from Cobra’s existing portfolio of products. In fact, the updated internal constructions have been specifically designed to enable the greatest performance

increases from the new 107 Milwaukee Eight engine as well as to unleash its great sound. “We reworked these initial mufflers to fit the look and sound of the 2017. Then we made sure they would perform as the customer expects, while giving those buyers a wide selection coming out of the gate,” says Tim McCool, president of Cobra Engineering. Additionally, McCool adds, the company’s detachable backrests already fit the new Harleys.

Here are the mufflers that are ready for purchase, and all but the 4-inch RPT are available in black.

RACE PRO: Its look is as distinctive as its deep throaty rumble. The Race Pro’s unique black clamshell mounting bracket sets it apart from any other muffler on the market, and that look gets even better with its black thinline tip. A ed core wrapped in a fiberglass pillow creates its deep sound.

4.5-INCH POWERFLO: With a 4.5-inch slim-line tip at its end, the PowrFlo muffler smoothly tapers to its 4-inch front. With easy installation, incredible sound and top of its class performance the PowrFlo is tough to beat. It’s 3-inch high-flow core offers superior performance with an incredibly deep sound.

NH SERIES MUFFLER: The Neighbor Hater muffler is for that rider who thinks too loud is just right. And it’s more than just a loud-crowd pleaser because it also sounds so great with its deep rumble. Like the Race Pro its 4-inch round body bells out to a 4.5-inch rolled tip. 4-INCH RPT: The 4-inch, Race Pro Tip is finished in satin black, and held in place with seven, 12-point zinc plated bolts. It delivers increased performance right off the bottom with a deeper, more aggressive exhaust note.

909 TWINS: The 909 Twins 4-inch round muffler is unique on several fronts. First, the rear is finished with a rolled scalloped tip, not a simple slash cut. That rolled tip is matched with an inner core finished with the same scalloped cut. The inner tip is actually part of the constant velocity, tuned core that gives the muffler its great sound and performance.

This initial portfolio of slip-ons ensures that there is a look and sound for even the most discriminating of customers. From the deep bass tone of the Race Pro and PowrFlo mufflers, to the louder bark of the Neighbor Haters, and the classic sound emanating from the 909-Twins, there’s something for everyone. ■

Clutch components for Ducatis

D

ucati riders are serious about their bikes and any available upgrades. When it comes to a better-than-OE clutch, Barnett has what they’re looking for. Their Ducati clutch lineup includes plate kits, spring kits, clutch baskets and pressure plates for a wide variety of Ducati models, from the 1980s on up. Way more than just an OE replacement, Barnett’s plate kits feature exclusive, segmented-design Kevlar or carbon frictions for the wet-clutch applications, and RQ frictions for dry-clutches. Both sets, wet and dry applications, are matched with precision ground tempered-steel drive plates for a combination that delivers a perfect fit, positive engagement and smoother shifts.

When it comes to upgrading their bikes, your Ducati customers want performance and style. Barnett’s lineup of clutch part upgrades offers both.

For Ducatis with a 6-speed dry clutch, Barnett has a spring kit upgrade. The benefit here is heavy-duty chrome silicon clutch springs that have been shot-peened, heat-treated and powder-coated gloss black.

Barnett’s Second Generation stainless steel inserts for smooth operation and extreme wear resistance. The pressure plates even help to protect the clutch in the event of a tip over. The baskets and plates are available in red, black or gold anodizing. ■

Barnett includes stainless steel screws and billet aluminum spring cups, too, in choices of red, black, gold or clear anodizing. Completing the clutch upgrade there are precision-machined, aerospace-grade aluminum clutch baskets and pressure plates. The clutch baskets all feature 5
