Remembering 1968 “ ” by D on Em de

You say you want a revolution, well you know, we all want to change the world... – John Lennon 1968

T

he year 1968 was one of revolution around the world. The “New Left” arose. People distrusted the system and wanted to unite humanity. In the United States and Europe, people marched for civil rights and to protest the Vietnam War. There were strikes and marches for free speech in Prague and Warsaw. The world would never be the same again.

cialties?” Rudd answered: “Yes it is.” Now, 50 years later, Drag Specialties is the worldwide leader of aftermarket products for V-twin motorcycles. By 1968, motocross legend Torsten Hallman had four world championships under his belt and was beginning to cash in on his success with trips to the United States to help the sport get off the ground there. The man would become known as “Mr. Motocross” and riders in America

YEARS 1968-2018

In the United States, Harley-Davidson Motor Company sold about 27,000 motorcycles that year, a tenth of what they sell now. There was a motorcycle enthusiast in Minnesota at the time named Tom Rudd. He had a built-up Sportster that he raced in local drag races. To fund his racing habit, he and two of his friends worked on other rider’s Harleys, building race engines and doing other modifications. They weren’t a real business yet, didn’t even have a name. Then one day someone called on the phone and the person asked: ”Is this Drag Spe-

and around the world knew if Hallman put his name on a product, it was good and they wanted it. 50 years later that is still the case. We salute Tom Rudd and Torsten Hallman. As we will do throughout 2018, this issue has more of their stories and about the people and products that followed in their footsteps to build the brands up to what they are today, 50 years later. ■

NEWS EVENTS Thor Puts Up a Fight in 2017

T

he 2017 FIM Motocross World Championship series stretched over eight months and 21 races – that is a whole of racing for the tough riders of the MXGP.

It’s a numbers game, and for every weekend of racing, there is a chance to move up the standings or fall back,

Thor/Kawasaki rider Clement Desalle ended the 2017 season in fourth place after fighting it out at races around the globe. Photo courtesy of Kawasaki European Press Service

and each rider goes all out to get across that finish line first. For the 2017 season, we saw the Thor riders at Husqvarna and Kawasaki stepping up and letting it all out at races around the globe. In the end, Thor/Monster Energy/Kawasaki’s Clement Desalle pushed through a handful of setbacks throughout the season to place solidly in the overall Top 10 championship points standings at number four. No lesser a competitor was Thor/Husqvarna’s Max Anstie. In race after race, the British rider battled it out to add to his points run. He put in a particularly strong showing at the second to last round at the Assen circuit in the Netherlands. In moto one, he fought back from a bad start to land the third spot on the podium, while race two found him with a fourth place finish. It was a performance that earned him a third place overall for the GP. With only two months until the start of the 2018 season at the MXGP of Argentina, we look forward to another hard-fought series of racing. ■

NEWS EVENTS EICMA 2017 A MILESTONE IN MILAN

T

he EICMA show is one of the most important shows dedicated to two wheels anywhere in the world. Not only does it attract a massive number of consumers, it is also an important meeting point for manufacturers, dealers and the media. And, it keeps getting bigger. In fact, in 2017 the show attracted nearly 25 percent more visitors than in 2015.

In keeping with this growth, Parts Europe expanded its booth to a record 400 square meters in 2017, with larger spaces for Thor and Icon. There were also dedicated spaces for the maintenance section, the ATV/UTV segment and a huge V-twin section. Parts Europe also invited several of its vendors to serve as co-exhibitors and meet with customers in person. The lineup

FMF spokesman Doug Muellner represented the brand in the Off-Road Section alongside Arctiva and Moose Racing.

included such brands as AFX, FMF, J.W. Speaker, Memphis Shades, Neken, and S&S Cycle. The first days of the show are dedicated to dealers, and the 2017 show didn’t disappoint. Many dealers showed up to learn about the new products, meet with their Parts Europe sales reps, and to get more information on becoming a partner with Parts Europe. A signing session with Thor/Kawasaki rider Clément Desalle attracted a lot of visitors, while a visit from Simone Mastronardi, the Thor rider and 2017 Italian quad racing champion, brought in many fans.

The autograph signing session with Thor rider Clément Desalle was a big draw.

As always the new Icon Collection impressed the visitors, with the new waterproof gear – the Squalborn and the Fairlady – attracting much of the attention. Visitors were also very enthusiastic about the new boot collection. With the latest EICMA show, Parts Europe has made a huge step ahead. The company is no longer a new player in the Europe powersports market, and the evolution is apparent. Many showgoers noted the growth, and recognized the company’s hard work in achieving that growth. The team at Parts Europe is already looking forward to next year’s show. ■

CELEBRATING A GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY IN STYLE

A Drag Specialties/Ray Price Harley-Davidson collaboration, this all-business Road King is the 2018 FatBook Cover Bike. The embodiment of custom performance, it marks Drag Specialties’ 50th year in business.

PARTS EUROPE MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2018

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

An Auto Meter 5-inch Playback tachometer dominates the instrumentation, a not-so-subtle reminder that drag racers had a hand in this build.

A smooth Memphis Shades Bullet fairing flows right into the Paul Yaffe Razor Back fuel tank, which in turn blends into a customstitched Drag Specialties solo seat. The handlebar is a Todd’s Cycle Polished Moto with grips from Joker Machine.

That’s where the guys from Drag started talking about a FatBook build with the team from Ray Price HarleyDavidson from Raleigh, NC, USA. The result, all these months later, is Number 50, a very special tribute to Drag Specialties’ 50th anniversary. Teaming up with the Ray Price guys for this anniversary project is also a nod to a pure-performance relationship Drag Specialties has had with the late-Ray Price and his do-it-all street/race/custom Harley-Davidson dealership. The drag racing pioneer and AMA Hall of Famer was sponsored by Drag Specialties during his years on the track, and for decades that shop in Raleigh has been a dedicated Drag Specialties dealer. No. 50’s collaboration became a celebration three-times over — for Drag Specialties’ 50 years in business; for both Drag’s and Price’s decades-long commitment to all-things HarleyDavidsons; and, of course, for drag racing. It was a natural.

All those holes in the pegs and controls could only mean Battistinis. BDL’s 2-inch belt drive with a satin finish two-piece motor plate is the new primary.

Just as naturally, the brand-new 2017 Road King pulled out of stock in Raleigh would be totally worked over, not only to look good, but to also carry plenty of all-around performance to match its looks. Serious racers and riders like the Ray Price techs would have it no other way. Neither would the Drag Specialties team; the company, after all, was born from drag racing.

2018 FATBOOK COVER BIKE

he 2018 FatBook cover bike, this matte-finished and metal flake-glistening Road King, got its start more than a year ago at the Drag Specialties dealer ride in Jekyll Island, Georgia, USA.

The Drag Specialties seat is a custom-match to Yaffe’s Razor Back tank. Battistini extended fork boots dress-out a suspension using Legend’s AXEO cartridge conversion. Yaffe side covers and Chupa rear fender flow right along with the extended Drag Specialties saddlebags. Note the filled exhaust cutout on the left-side saddlebag.

So, that Milwaukee-Eight-powered bike got the full treatment — engine upgrades, suspension upgrades, better braking and better handling. All in all, it became a betterperforming, better-looking Harley-Davidson. To get there this brand-new motorcycle was stripped down to the bare frame and reassembled from the engine-cradle up. Along the way it also became the test mule for plenty of newly designed prototype parts from the aftermarket, custom bolt-ons aimed at the new Harley-Davidsons and the Milwaukee-Eight engine. Many of those parts are now in production and in the 2018 FatBook, and for that you can thank this bike. Reassembly began with a fresh coat of paint for the frame, a step that the Ray Price guys feel is too often overlooked. Painting a frame to match whatever else will be going on colorwise kicks any bike up a notch on the custom scale. It makes a difference. The rest began with a clever adaptation of the currently hot fat front tire movement. Everyone agreed on a 150/70-18 as being plenty big enough for the desired look and handling stability without overdoing things.

28

PARTS EUROPE MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2018

With a careful selection of parts, this was accomplished with bolt-on parts and without any serious fork or triple-tree modifications. A Metzeler ME888 went on a new 4¼-inch wide Performance Machine Galaxy wheel special ordered in a raw finish. (Talk with your Drag rep about how to custom order parts like this.) That race-ready look was bracketed by a pair of matching Galaxy rotors and PM radial-mount calipers, and finished off with Battistini extended fork boots. The latter feature a drilledout racer’s look that would be carried on throughout the build. The new front wheel and tire were covered with a widened Russ Wernimont LS-2 style fender and inside those legs there’s a Legend Suspensions AXEO system, a suspension upgrade matched at the rear with Legend’s AIR-A adjustable shocks. When the engine went back into that frame, the MilwaukeeEight was sporting its own set of upgrades, inside and out. Reasoning that a sensibly hopped-up 107-inch multi-valve engine would be plenty for a street-ridden custom, the inside changes, so far, were limited to an S&S Cycle 465G gear-drive cam and kit. A custom-polished S&S Cycle 2-into1 system replaced the stock exhaust.

2017 HARLEY-DAVIDSON ROAD KING Customized By Ray Price Harley-Davidson / Raleigh, NC

The bodywork finishing all this kicked off with a Memphis Shades fairing and a giant Auto Meter 13cm (5-inch) playback tachometer custom-mounted front-and-center. There is a Paul Yaffe Razor Back tank, the matching Drag Specialties solo seat, Yaffe’s Chupa rear fender, Drag Specialties extended saddlebags and more from Paul Yaffe with the Swoop Side covers styled to flow into those saddlebags. Everything got multi-coat attention with more of that same matte-red metalflake used on the frame, this time accented with plenty of silvery-gray panels put down in a now-you-see-it/now-you-don’t scallop treatment. It looks killer, exactly what you’d expect from a FatBook cover bike. Take a good look here, there’s plenty to see. There will be plenty of other chances to see it all, too. This is the 2018 FatBook cover bike after all, and you’ll be going to that big catalog often this year. For Drag Specialties’ 50th Anniversary, the FatBook is bigger and better than ever, packed solid with almost everything from the most soughtafter vendors in our industry. Run down the accompanying Build Sheet for No. 50 for just a hint of what’s new. The bike is also slated to go out on the Drag Specialties show truck circuit so there will be plenty of opportunities to examine things up-close and personal. ■

Think about it, adding a set of high-reaching ape hangers, or even a low-profile pair of drag bars, is the starting point for a lot of today’s popular custom styles. And, the change doesn’t only alter the look, it switches up the riding style for everything from boulevard cruising to canyon ripping.

LA Choppers has a style of custom handlebars to match just about anybody’s particular taste, a range that includes everything from a handful of popular club-style handlebars to some of those retro-cool BMX bars, complete with crossbar, and a little (or lot) of everything else in between. And, for Parts Europe you can bet that a good number of those handlebar models carry that important TÜV approval. from 25.5cm up to 51cm. All bars work in 25.4mm stockstyle clamps, and accept standard grips and controls. The 32mm range is also drilled for internal wiring, and will work with heated grips and have electronic throttle notches. The bars will fit most risers that are 89mm on center, and are available in chrome, gloss black or flat black. For the Bagger crowd, there are 32mm touring ape hanger bars for a look that’s as popular as it is timeless. They are designed for proper clearance on FLHT and FLHX models with the Batwing fairing. Seventy Years Strong

Street, Track or Dirt, Look to Barnett

Barnett has a number of upgraded clutch options for a wide range of two- and four-wheel off-road vehicles, including the Honda CRF450R/RX.

C

harlie Barnett began making motorcycle parts in his California garage in 1948. Determined to outdo what was currently available in the spares market, Barnett started with cable assemblies, replacement/upgrade setups for the British bikes of the day and the early Harley-Davidsons. That equipment quickly proved its worth as many riders discovered that if it was from Barnett Tool & Engineering, it was the good stuff. Seven decades later, that’s still the case. What has changed is the scope of what Barnett has to offer. Cables are still there, lots of them in lots of styles. From

those original applications right up to the newest 2018 machines, almost everything is covered with choices of traditional or custom housings. There are clutch-kits and upgrade packages now, too, once again available for nearly everything on two wheels or four, on the street or in the dirt. Today’s Barnett has a lot to offer in the off-road market, too, upgrades like the latest Dirt Digger clutch kit and extra-plate kit for the Honda CRF450R/RX. Recently added to the Barnett lineup, these two Honda kits feature an exclusive segmented Kevlar material on the friction plates. It also includes tempered steel plates and a full set of shot-peened and heat-treated clutch springs. Both kits install the same as stock for easy installations, and they’re both designed to flow more oil through the clutch for cooler running and longer life. And, like all Dirt Digger Clutch Kits, everything is pre-measured for an absolutely correct stack height prior to packaging. Those replacement springs are 10 to 15 percent stronger than OE, too. It all adds up to smoother, more consistent performance, increased clutch life and a reliable fit. Barnett also has the high-performance and highperforming clutch baskets for those off-road machines. They’re available for popular 80cc and up off-road motorcycles and sport ATVs. Every one is precision machined from the most durable aluminum available, and features replaceable stainless steel inserts to prevent grooving of the basket where the clutch-plate tabs make contact. Barnett redesigned the oil-passage windows, custommachining them to further increase oil flow through those segmented clutch plates for even cooler operating temperatures and a longer clutch life. The kit includes Grade 8 quality fasteners, and the backing plates are included where applicable. Select applications even come with the center kicker gear already installed. ■

Ever since Charlie Barnett launched his motorcycle parts business in his California garage back in 1948, the company has expanded to offer a big lineup of parts for street and off-road.

HELMET ACCESSORIES

Anti-Fog Bubble Shields

More colors, new features, perfect styling. That sums up the Biltwell bubble shield line nicely.

nap-on bubble shields originated in the late 1960s, 100 years after American inventors John and Isaiah Hyatt pioneered high-pressure injection molding technology for the fledgling thermoplastic industry.

S

From their introduction a decade ago, Biltwell bubble shields have set the standard for retro freshness, quality optics and pure style. Three strong, stainless steel snaps across the brow fasten securely to virtually any helmet to provide a perfect barrier between the rider’s face and the elements.

In the nearly half century since the birth of the bubble, little has changed with these snap-on shields. A tint here, a mirror treatment there, but nothing too advanced.

Biltwell uses injection-molded polycarbonate plastic to construct these bubbles; this material is world renowned for its durability, optical clarity and scratch resistance.

Well, the Biltwell product nerds saw room for improvement in the bubble shield game when they entered it 10 years ago, and they continue to evolve their popular optic upgrade to meet the needs of fashion- and safetyconscious bike riders.

Parts Europe stocks the complete range of Biltwell bubble shield colorways – everything from clear and gradient tints to rainbow mirror for UV-blocking style. Of course, every Biltwell bubble blocks 91 percent-plus UV-A light and 99 percent UV-B light for improved vision when daylight-riding conditions are particularly bright. ■

Anti-fog treatment is the latest feature Biltwell has added to its robust line of clear, tinted, and mirror shields, and it is a game changer. Now fans of the ’60s bubble look don’t have to fight foggy vision from warm breath on cold morning rides.

BATTERY CHARGERS

Charge into the Night No More Guessing in the Dark

The OptiMate Solar provides battery status information while charging both in the daylight and at night, long after the sun has gone down.

T

he problem with most solar chargers is that once the sun goes down your customers have no idea what the battery status is or how well it is charged.

Those days are no more! The new OptiMate Solar line features a smart charger monitor that provides battery status information around the clock. That means that info is available when it is receiving a charge during the day, and when the battery is at rest overnight. The LED panel includes one Solar Charge light and three battery monitor lights. When the sun shines the Solar Charge light will blink, confirming a controlled charge is passing into the battery, while one of the three battery status lights indicates charge progress. When night falls and things get dark, this smart charger monitor changes into a low-power monitor with one of the three battery status lights blinking every three seconds, indicating how well your customer’s battery is charged. In other words, it does not matter if the sun is shining or not, the OptiMate Solar charge-monitor controller always displays your customer’s battery status. No more nighttime guessing. The TM-522-1 10W kit (p/n 3807-0435) delivers 12V 0.8A and TM522-2 20W kit (p/n 3807-0126) delivers 12V 1.6A. Each kit includes a high-intensity poly crystalline panel with four corner mounts, an OptiMate O-01 weatherproof battery lead, an OptiMate O-04 set of battery clips and the outdoor rated OptiMate smart charger-controller (TM-522). ■

It’s the top rung of the ladder in the world of motorcycle roadracing. In fact, no motorcycle racing series of any form is attended or followed by more people, many who have joined as fans of the rider of the #93 Repsol Honda, Marc Marquez. The competition for race wins and the championship has been intense in recent years, yet since Marquez joined the series in 2013, he has become the center of the sport. The young Spaniard, who will turn 25 in February, has won the world championship four out of his first five seasons, scored 35 Grand Prix race wins and stood on the podium 63 times. That all followed winning world championships in the 125cc and Moto2 classes on his way up. The champagne bottles from his 2017 championship celebration at Valencia, Spain had barely been cleared out of the Honda race garage last November when the Repsol team was back on the track the next day to begin testing for this year’s series. Also at the test were his main title contenders, including experienced veterans Cal Crutchlow, Andrea Dovizioso, Andrea Iannone, Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa, Danilo Petrucci and Valentino Rossi, as well as young lions including brothers Aleix and Pol Espargaro, Jonas Folger, Jack Miller, Maverick Viñales, Johann Zarco and the 2017 Moto2 World Champion Franco Morbidelli, who moves up to the MotoGP series this year. Surely, it will be a great season, and it all begins under the lights in Qatar on March 18th. More info: www.motogp.com ■

Marc Marquez begins the celebration of his fourth MotoGP world championship on the podium of the 2017 season finale at Valencia, Spain. He won six races during the year, but ended the season with a conservative 3rd place finish to gain the needed points for the title.

Pre-season testing often results in machines on track without the usual sponsor graphics. This was the case with Marquez at the Valencia test, getting his first laps in on the mostly-black 2018 Honda RC213V race bike, the day after the season finale. He was obviously pleased with the latest version, setting the fastest time of the two-day test.

A Michelin engineer checks tire temperatures at the Valencia test on the Marc VDS Honda ridden by newly crowned Moto2 world champion Franco Morbidelli. 2018 will be Morbidelli’s first season at the MotoGP level.

The pre-season test was as important to exclusive MotoGP tire supplier Michelin as it was to the riders and teams. Information gained at the test will help Michelin make crucial decisions for tire construction and rubber formulas for 2018.

In preparation for his 22nd year in Grand Prix racing, the ever-popular Valentino Rossi shook down the 2018 Yamaha M-1 at the Valencia test. He was just a tenth of a second off the best time of his Yamaha teammate Maverick Viñales, and fifth overall. He starts the season with 115 overall career victories and 9 world titles.

Maverick Viñales started fast in 2017, winning three of the first five races. He then struggled the rest of the year, reportedly with handling issues on the factory Yamaha M-1 MotoGP race bike. Yamaha engineers must have listened well, as Viñales was second fastest of the 22 riders at the Valencia test.

It took Andrea Dovizioso six races to win his first race of the year in 2017, but then won five more before the conclusion of the 18-race series. His victory at the penultimate race in Malaysia kept him mathematically in the points chase with Marquez at the 2017 finale. He crashed out, however.

Gear For Bike and Rider Protective Pieces Built for Off-Road

M

oose Racing has new gear for both motorcycle and rider. The Pro LG skid plate represents the next level in durable protection for offroad motorcycles, the Qualifier line of gear is quality at affordable price and two new jackets keep Adventure Touring riders snug in bad weather.

Both styles of the Qualifier pants are made of a polyester chassis with double-stitched seams and a pre-bent ergonomic design. The knees are reinforced with a high-denier nylon. The high-quality sublimated graphics are breathable to provide style that doesn’t stifle, and the colors are designed to retain their brightness over time.

The Pro LG skid plate is a sturdier version of Moose Racing’s Pro skid plate. Constructed of a high-density polyethylene (HDPE), the 8mm thick material offers increased protection for the engine and shift linkage. The material is a technical plastic that provides protection without the weight – it is 40 percent lighter than aluminum. All mounting hardware is included with the Pro LG skid plate, as well as installation instructions.

The standard Qualifier pants have molded graphics and leg badges for roost deflection. Meanwhile, the over-theboot pants have a zippered leg opening and a three-point waist adjustment system for easy tailoring. Spandex stretch panels ensure that everything moves easily during a ride. The over-the-boot pants also have an oversized knee area for maximum movement on the bike.

Moose Racing’s Qualifier line is a best-seller thanks to its entry-level price point, catchy graphics and broad sizing options. Qualifier jerseys go all the way from small to 5XL, while both the standard and over-the-boot pants range from 69cm to 142cm (28-inch-54-inch) sizes. The Qualifier is available in six color schemes for both the jerseys and standard pants, including red/black, red/white/blue, blue/white, orange/black, black/hi-viz, orange/hi-viz and Stealth, which is the black and white option. The over-the-boot pants are available in black so that they coordinate with all of the jersey options. The updated Qualifier jersey has a generous cut and raglan sleeves for a full range of motion. The polyester chassis has high-quality sublimated graphics that will retain their color wash after wash. The spandex collar, neck taping and non-restrictive stretch mini cuffs combine for a comfortable fit and finish.

Moose Racing also has two options for Adventure Touring riders who are out in the rain, chilly temperatures or the dreaded combination of wet and chilly weather. The XCR line of performance gear now includes the XCR pullover jacket. The nylon stretch shell chassis is waterproof, windproof and breathable. High-denier nylon in critical wear areas makes the jacket more durable, too. Waterproof seam sealing plus a durable water repellent coating are further steps to keep the elements at bay. The cut of the XCR pullover jacket is sized so that it will fit easily over gear. The ergonomic sleeve design with stretch panels creates a comfortable, no-bind fit. Engine Essentials Off-Road and ATV Pistons

R

iders and racers with off-road bikes and ATVs put those machines through some rough use. It’s the nature of the game, and just as naturally those off-road and ATV engines, both the 2-strokes and 4-strokes, come due for a piston replacement more often than most anything else in motorsport. Understandably, anyone faced with the time and expense of that job wants the new piston to not only make more power, but also last a lot longer than the one being replacing. It’s for these reasons, power, reliability and longevity, that riders, racers and experienced engine techs turn to Vertex for their pistons. A first-choice for top runners in MXGP, Supermoto and the Enduro World Championships, Vertex has the pistons for all those applications and more. Listings in the Parts Europe Off Road and ATV catalogs run for almost 30 pages with winning performance built into every piston Vertex makes. They’re all lightweight, high performers ready to boost power and extend longevity. Available both cast or forged, and with applications for the very newest machines, Vertex features can include specially-treated/high-strength aerospace-quality alloys, as well as custom performance profiles inspired by F1. There’s more than 60 years of manufacturing experience at work here. More than that, Vertex pistons are the result of years spent in close collaboration with OE manufacturers and top race tuners. All that know-how is combined with Vertex’s own engineering data to design, develop and manufacture pistons with every detail thoroughly addressed with precision and expertise. The Vertex forged pistons, the preferred choice for highcompression 4-stroke engines, feature a slipper-skirt design and are manufactured from top-quality aircraft materials — VP-310 (2618) or VP-300 (4032) alloys with T6 or T61 heat treatments. They’re strong, lightweight, lowdrag pistons with a minimized expansion rate under the stress of high-temperature operation. Every one is machined to exacting tolerances with attention focused not only on the profiles but also on the radial flatness of the ring grooves and the shape, size and alignment of the pin bores. They’re pistons allowing highcompression 4-strokes to produce and maintain peak power in the hardest, harshest conditions. The Vertex cast pistons, perfect picks for modern fuelinjected 2-strokes engines, are just as good. Here again only the finest metals are used, permanent-mold VP 127, VP178 and VP205 alloys with T5 or T6 heat treatments. When applications demand it these pistons even get an anodized coating on their skirts and/or the pin bores. ■

T

he 2018 range of motorcycles has now been unveiled and it’s apparent that the modern vintage-style bike segment continues to be popular.

Ducati is growing its line of Scramblers, Triumph has the modern classic Bonneville line-up and Royal Enfield has a new twin. True vintage bikes and café machines are also popular, as well as classic scooters. The customers who purchase and ride these old and new machines want to look the part in their riding gear as well. They want the vintage look of an open-face helmet, but with up-to-date features, and the FX-76 from AFX checks off all the right boxes. Already a popular model in the AFX lineup, the FX-76 is available in two new graphics called the Flame and the Claymore. The Flame is an ideal callback to the days of custom flame paint-jobs offered in three color combinations, Matte Orange/Black, Gloss Blue/Grey or Glass White/Grey. The Claymore is a tribute to the classic pinstripe of ’60s racing helmets with a free-form pattern following the helmet’s natural lines. The Claymore is offered in Matte White/Gold/Silver or Gloss Orange/Blue/Beige. It’s a classic look that looks perfect for an open-face helmet. Every FX-76 helmet is made using high quality, durable materials. Its aerodynamic shell is handmade with fiberglass

Inside the FX-76, the interior and cheek pads are made of a specially treated nylon combined with perforated leather for that classic look and feel. There is even ample space to install speakers for audio or bike-to-bike communications systems. The FX-76 also features a race-approved double D-ring retention system. The Flame and Claymore are the latest models in the FX-76 Multi-Color line-up. Graphics and colors also offered include Speed Racer, Raceway, Tri-Color, Multi-Solid colors, and more. All models have a clear coat finish over the graphics to protect them from scratching. All FX-76 helmets are available in sizes XS-XXL, and meet or exceed ECE 22.05 and DOT FMVSS-21 motorcycle helmet standards. AFX also offers open-face helmets with a more modern look, including the FX-46 and the FX-50. ftermarket suspension can make a big difference in how a motorcycle looks and feels, but it can also come with a big price tag. Drag Specialties believes that making a suspension upgrade should be both affordable and easy, and that a rider should have options when it comes to suspension settings.

The 267mm (10½-inch) shocks from Drag Specialties fit 2004 to 2018 Harley-Davidson XL models. The shocks in this line have steel dual tube hydraulic damper bodies with hard chrome shafts. Dual-rate progressive springs and adjustable preload round out the shock to create not only a premium product, but also a premium ride.

The Drag Specialties Premium line of shock absorbers includes ride-height adjustable shocks and slammed 267mm (10½-inch) shocks. Both of the shock options allow riders to get quality and control without the high price. Adjustable ride height and preload settings are part of the package, offering flexibility so riders can dial in the perfect shock setup.

Color options for both Drag Premium shock lines are chrome and black. The chrome option has chrome springs and damper bodies with clear anodized billet aluminum end caps. The black color option, on the other hand, is just that – completely blacked out for an understated look.

Both shocks arrive ready to display in Premium Drag packaging. The upscale design of the packaging not only denotes products in Drag’s Premium category, but it also means dealers can confidently display the shocks in a professional manner. The ride-height adjustable shocks from Drag Specialties come in 292 mm, 305 mm and 330 mm (11-inch, 12-inch and 13-inch) lengths. They fit a variety of new and old models, including the 1984-2018 Harley-Davidson FLT/FLHT/ FLHR/FLTR, 1991-2017 FXD/FXDWG and the 2004-18 XL. The adjustable shocks are made from nitrogen-charged steel monotube damper bodies with hard chrome-plated shafts. Dual-rate progressive wound springs ensure that the ride will be a smooth one. Ride-height settings have half-inch adjustability either up or down from the size listed for the shock. For an even more custom setting, the spring preload can also be adjusted.

Seriously Silver

The New Airflite Helmet Icon’s new Airflite helmet features the company’s unique Quicksilver finish.

The Airflite helmet meets or exceeds ECE 22-05 helmet standards, and includes such features as the interior, flip-down Dropshield and the super-vent cooling system.

I

con’s helmet line has expanded again, this time with the introduction of the Airflite. The aggressive lines of the new full-face street helmet are paired with the company’s Quicksilver brushed silver finish for an industrial look. The Airflite meets or exceeds ECE 22-05 helmet standards, and it is loaded with a lot of perks to keep the helmet comfortable and easy to maintain. The shell is constructed of an injection-molded polycarbonate to offer strength and durability for guarding against outside elements. That shell is covered with Icon’s distinctive Quicksilver finish. First, the entire helmet is painted with multiple coats of silver paint, and then each helmet is burnished, antiqued and polished by hand. The result is a truly unique helmet, since no two are alike. The process gives the Quicksilver finish a distinctive depth and sheen, as well. Quicksilver is a new finish to the Icon family of helmets, and it can also be found on the Variant and Airframe Pro. To keep things from getting foggy inside the helmet, a removable molded breath deflector has been paired with fog-free shields. The Quick-Change fog-free Fliteshield is easy to swap and easy to keep clear, even on cold days. Each replacement Fliteshield comes with new side plates. In addition to clear, the shield is also available in Icon’s range of tinted shields. Meanwhile, behind the Fliteshield, the fog-free Dropshield can slide down to provide shading from the sunshine. An exterior switch makes it simple to drop or raise the

shield, even when wearing gloves. The tinted Dropshield is an ideal solution for changing light conditions, allowing a rider to change the view without changing the shield. The Dropshield is also available in clear for riders who want to pair it with a tinted Fliteshield. Icon has built a recessed twin channel super-vent cooling system into the Airflite. The system utilizes multiple oversized intake ports, which are controlled by individual vent triggers. Oversized exhaust ports ensure that the hot air gets filtered out of the helmet. Recessed super-vents reduce wind noise, so a rider gets all the benefits of a ventilation system without having to listen to it. Inside the Airflite, a removable HydraDry moisturewicking liner provides a snug fit while keeping things dry. Air from the vents is channeled between the comfort liner and the EPS foam liner, which keeps air moving so the interior of the Airflite does not get stuffy. The HydraDry liner helps reduce heat build-up, too, and it wicks moisture away from the rider’s face. The Airflite is available in sizes XS to 3XL.

The Hype

A new look available on topof-the-line Fuse gear, the High Tide makes that racewear unmistakable. All the great fits and race-inspired features are still here, all those moisture-wicking materials, the minimal seams for comfort, jerseys with drop-tail designs and pants with pre-curved Rapid Flex knees, but with the new High Tide look.

Here’s another look that’s going to be popular. The Nebula is offered on the Prime Fit gear, Thor’s lightweight-design racewear with the unrestricted fit for mobility, the compression sleeves and flatlock seams. Everything Prime Fit is here, the Free Flex expansion panels, leather knee panels and all the rest, but it’s now available with a look inspired by some amazing astronomy images.

Distressed is in and that’s the Hype. Available on the Pulse and Pulse Air kits, Thor gear that’s earned accolades for its fourway stretch panels, the set-in sleeves, that double- and triple-stitching and mesh liners.

A heather pattern design, the High Tide features strong geometric blocking and an asymmetrical design. It’s just the right amount of tradition mixed with new-look vibe. The kits feature bold accent colors, lots of detail and all the richness of that heather pattern.

All of it is sure to catch more than a few glances out at the track, and once you get a look at these new pieces, you’ll understand why.

The Nebula is an interstellar trip to another galaxy. Pushing the bounds of sublimation printing, THOR used rich photographic colors and an intricate geometric overlay adding depth to the design for a look sure to appeal to riders wanting something more.

The Hype combines the distressed look of a hand-rendered Thor logo with a splatterpaint background. It’s pure attitude, bold graphics and bold colors. On the Pulse jerseys, the Hype style also features a unique high-density logo embellishment for even more dimension. That new Hype graphic works great on the tremendously popular Sector helmet, too. The perfect completion to a Pulse or Pulse Air kit, it’s also an excellent stand-alone graphic that works great with many of the other kits in the Thor line. (And here’s a hint – if the Sector Hype helmets follow the trend of the initial Sector helmet launch keep plenty of the Black/Charcoal versions on hand. You’ll need them.)

Communication Device Training

Parts Europe SENA technical specialists David Luchetti (left) and Slawa Gendelmann (middle) received in-depth training on Bluetooth communication devices from SENA’s Mirko Nagler.

T

he technology in the motorcycle industry continues to get more advanced, and that includes communication devices. Staying in touch with other riders, especially on group rides, has never been easier, but all of the high-tech functions can feel a little overwhelming.

Curto discussed what to do for any technical needs with SENA products, and they covered the most frequently asked questions to help the sales team better educate dealers. That is a good thing for dealers, because it means that any questions about SENA products or any repair issues can be quickly and easily addressed.

To make it all easier to understand, SENA reps have been working with Parts Europe sales staff to not only explain how it all works, but to show off the company’s latest product, the 30K.

Together with Parts Europe buyer Christoph Hoehl, marketing manager Farid Al-Samarrai and European sales manager Xavier Williart, SENA’s Nagler and Curto planned further steps to improve the collaboration and increase the development of SENA in the European market.

In November, SENA hosted in-house training to help the Parts Europe sales staff better understand SENA’s products as well as the technology behind them. SENA’s Mirko Nagler and Dario Curto visited Parts Europe in Wasserliesch, Germany, where they spoke to more than 50 employees from different departments and from all over Europe. Nagler and Curto also provided additional, indepth training for Slawa Gendelmann and David Luchetti, who are the SENA technical specialists at Parts Europe. In addition to talking about SENA products, including the new 30K, the training was an ideal opportunity for the Parts Europe sales team to discuss some of the typical questions and concerns that dealers have. Of all the SENA communication devices that Parts Europe carries, the 30K is the newest and the most advanced, utilizing Bluetooth 4.1. That upgrade allows the 30K to use a new feature called Mesh Intercom Technology, which has a range of two km in open terrain. Mesh creates a network of connected users, instead of the usual one-to-one connection that previous versions of Bluetooth allowed. Perhaps the easiest way to think of it is to compare the technology to a spider web, and the 30K is the spider sitting at its center. The 30K also has several different modes that take advantage of the Bluetooth 4.1 technology. One of those is

rider to relax, without the hassle of re-pairing devices or constantly switching between them.

Another mode allows the rider to talk to a private group, with up to 16 users who can talk on the channel and an unlimited number of guest users who can listen in. Because each 30K device has its own broadcast range, that private group can be as far apart as eight km from front to back, and still have a clear signal for everyone in the group.

A built-in FM radio includes a ten preset-station memory with an automatic scan function. Advanced Noise Control is also built in to provide audio that eliminates background noise for a clearer sound.

If a rider falls out of that range, then the other riders in the group will remain connected. Meanwhile, the Mesh Intercom Technology will continue to search for that rider, automatically reconnecting them once they are back in range. The 30K can be used for more than simply communicating between riders. The Audio Multitasking feature allows the rider to have a conversation on the Mesh network, stream music from a smartphone, take and receive phone calls and listen to GPS navigation, all without having to switch between channels or devices. The integration is seamless, creating a safer communication device that does not require a lot of buttons. The experience also allows a

The SENA 30K does a lot, but the whole unit has a lowprofile design and weighs only about 61 grams. Two antennae and two separate processors ensure a clear signal and quick response. The Bluetooth intercom allows up to 13 hours of talk time, while the Mesh intercom allows up to eight hours. The lithium polymer battery recharges completely in just 1 and a half hours. Riders in a hurry can use the quick charge feature, which enables five hours of Bluetooth intercom use or three hours of Mesh Intercom use after just 20 minutes of charging. TIRES

V-Twin Rubber

Scorcher Tires for Harleys Michelin’s Scorcher lineup comes as original equipment on a number of Harley-Davidson models, including several of those new Softails and the popular Touring bikes.

I

t’s a performance partnership dating back to 2007. That’s when Michelin and Harley-Davidson began work on the Scorcher, a line of co-developed and co-branded tires eventually fit as original equipment on Sportsters, V-Rods, Street and Dyna models. They’ve also become Harley-Davidson’s approved replacement rubber for plenty of Softails and most of the popular Touring bikes. There’s even a specially designed Scorcher just for the FatBob. Hundreds of thousands of riders have come to know the Scorcher, and often look for them when the time comes for new tires. Until recently the only source for a Scorcher tire was a Harley-Davidson dealership. No more. Now Parts Europe has the full lineup; the Scorcher 11s, Scorcher 21s, Scorcher 31s and those FatBob specials, the Scorcher 32s. This, obviously, opens up a huge, previously untapped market for any Parts Europe dealer. When Harley riders learn they can get their Scorchers from you, your customer base increases.

The Scorcher 31 is stock on many Dyna and Sportster models making it an obvious replacement choice there. However, these are also the factory-approved replacement tires for many Harley-Davidson Touring models. Available in a wide range of sizes to accommodate all those applications, the 31s have a supple, comfortable ride coupled with outstanding stability. They’re all-around favorites. The feel and grip is confidence inspiring on both wet and dry roads and there’s excellent durability. Designed especially for the Fat Bob, the Scorcher 32 features an aggressive reverse tread design, generously grooved tread patterns coupled with advanced rubber chemistry to deliver excellent traction on wet or dry roads. There’s great tread life, as well, with even wear throughout the tire’s life. ■

»» Parts Europe has all of these in all the sizes needed. Talk to your rep for

details about the tires and the point-of-sale materials available from Michelin. Get more information at www.motorcycle.michelinman.com.

Start with the Scorcher 11s, OE Michelins for select Street, Sportster and V-Rod models. All-around performers, they incorporate Michelin’s latest radial technology coupled with a compound derived from years of championshipwinning race tires. The result is precise handling, easy maneuverability, impressive agility and a long life. They’re a top pick, OE and as a replacement. The Scorcher 21s are popular, too. Original equipment on the Street Rod, there’s a traditional cruiser design here coupled with inspiration from Michelin’s hypersport tires. The Scorcher 21s serve up a sporty, nimble feel – agility coupled with exceptional stability. The silica-rich compounds here provide excellent grip on wet surfaces, too, and ensure long, even wear.

Parts Europe dealers now have access to the same Michelin tires that come as stock on several Harley-Davidsons, and serve as factory-approved replacements. The Scorcher 32 was built specifically for the FatBob.

lthough TechnoResearch is new to the Parts Europe lineup of vendors, the high-technology company has been in business since 1992. TechnoResearch is in the realm of state-of-the-art electronics hardware and software development, consulting, and research and development. The company specializes in the design and development of electronic diagnostic tools for motorcycle, automotive and marine applications.

Pro Plus (p/n 3807-0314) professional tuning and diagnostic tool is now available to dealers through Parts Europe. The Centurion Super Pro Plus is an aftermarket tool that is designed to diagnose problems like Harley-Davidson’s OEM version. It offers advanced diagnostic, testing and adjustment features and works with all Harley EFI ECUs on 1997 and newer Harleys and Buells, including Delphi and Marelli systems. The bonus of the Super Pro Plus, though, is that it also works on all Victory and Indian models. That kind of versatility makes the product an ideal choice for independent dealers who work with a range of motorcycle brands. Using the Centurion Super Pro Plus, a dealer can code keys, configure radios and speakers, test the coolant pump, download system information, monitor meters, and read and clear errors. The tool can also provide TPMS manual sensor coding, the activation of the auxiliary 1 and 2 feature, the activation of the oil fan, mobile data recording for diagnostic purposes, ECU cloning of an original ECU onto a blank ECU and more. The Centurion Super Pro Plus has already been updated with more than 25 new features that come along with the 2018 license for the product. Carburetor tuning is one of the top new features, since many dealers have requested that capability. That feature can be combined with a TRO2 system to monitor and record the airto-fuel ratio, enabling the technician to make jet adjustments for premium performance.

arley-Davidson riders in Europe can now get an extra boost of style and power from S&S Cycle. The company’s Stealth air cleaners for a range of Harley models are now available with an EC approval. On the other end end of the engine, S&S Cycle also has a new Grand National slip-on exhaust for the 2018 FatBob.

Your customers can get an extra dose of power and style now that S&S Cycle’s Stealth air cleaner kits now carry an E-mark from the European Commission.

The Stealth air cleaner has been a popular S&S Cycle product in the United States, and it is now homologated for use on the streets of Europe. The air cleaner kits are sold in Europe exclusively through Parts Europe, and they all carry an E-mark from the European Commission in accordance with the mandatory members of the EU Directive. The Stealth air cleaner has a high-strength synthetic polymer back plate, which is designed to reduce heat transfer to the intake air. The cooler, denser air that flows into the engine allows for more efficient cylinder fill and better performance. Each kit ships with English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian installation guides to make it easy for both the dealer and rider to install. The EC-approved Stealth air cleaners are available for a number of fitments, including select fuel injected 103inch and 110-inch Harley-Davidson Dynas and Softails, as well as 883cc and 1200cc Sportster models. The kit can be run with an aluminum cover, which is also available through Parts Europe. The covers that fit stock 1999 or later Big Twin air cleaners can be used. Alternately, the Stealth air cleaner can be run without a cover. 2018 Fat Bob owners can get even more out of their Milwaukee-Eight engine with the new Grand National slip-on exhaust. The racing-inspired design has a black ce-

ramic finish for a stealth look, and each canister is capped with an aluminum tip. The tuneable baffle inserts allow the sound and back pressure to be adjusted to best suit a rider’s style and performance needs. When combined with a Stealth air cleaner, the Grand National slip-on improves horsepower by 12 percent and torque by 6 percent. Even the tone of the exhaust was taken into consideration — the Grand National has a deep performance rumble that has a much fuller sound than the stock exhaust. Each Grand National slip-on exhaust includes all of the hardware necessary for installation. ■

TIRES

The Battlecruise H50 Tires Designed for V-Twins

Bridgestone developed its Battlecruise H50 tires specifically for American-made V-twins by using technology employed to help design its Formula 1 and MotoGP racing tires.

The Battlecruise H50 provides strong, confidence-inspiring grip on both wet and dry surfaces, nimble handling, excellent cornering power and a quiet, comfortable ride.

B

rand-new compounds, all-new profiles, carcass constructions developed with state-of-the-art UltimatEye™ technology – all that describes the Bridgestone Battlecruise H50s, tires built to deliver everything asked for by riders on big Americanmade V-twins. With a strong, confidence-inspiring grip on both wet and dry surfaces, light and precise handling, high cornering power and a quiet, comfortable ride, the H50s check off all the right boxes. This includes long-life with even, extended tread wear. Bridgestone designed the Battlecruise H50 to excel everywhere it counts and all this is available now in all the important sizes. The H50 was developed with a blank page of paper and a clear set of goals. The UltimatEye technology is a technique Bridgestone originally employed to design its Formula 1 and MotoGP racing tires, and the H50s are only the second set of street tires it’s been used on. This advanced computerized visualization of tire behavior resulted in the H50’s optimum combinations of compound, tread design, construction and profile. The H50 rear, for instance, features a larger crown profile for better adhesion on road surfaces, and a compound

developed to deliver extended mileage. On the front, there‘s a larger, more uniform contact patch for higher cornering power and an easy, precise feel. The appearance of the tire on an American V-twin is pretty important and Bridgestone has given the H50 the aggressive look riders want, with performance in those patterns. The H50’s tread-design concepts have been proven under actual road conditions, and with thousands of miles of testing. More than just looking the part, these tread patterns are the culmination of everything Bridgestone has learned over the years. And all of this, the carcass designs, compounds and tread patterns has been rolled up into one tire, the Battlecruise H50, a tire designed from the ground up specifically for an American V-twin. The Battlecruise H50 also comes with Bridgestone’s Supplemental Road Hazard Warranty, a replacement program that covers the tires against any road hazard that renders the tire damaged or unusable. ■

There are fitments of the WME shocks for a big range of Harley-Davidsons.

Bitubo also has WME shocks, which feature preload and extension settings for a more comfortable ride. Made for Harley-Davidson motorcycles, café racers, and street machines, they have specific calibrations for each model. Bitubo’s steering dampers are designed to enhance the control of a motorcycle’s front-end and help eliminate oscillation; they are particularly useful when riding on uneven road surfaces. The billet damper body is made from light alloys with anodized finishes in various colors. They feature 18-click damping adjustments.

for performance on those gnarly off-road trails, the Tech 3’s chassis is highly abrasion and roost resistant, while at the same time providing excellent lower leg support and retaining its shape over repeated use. Another innovative feature of the *CE-certified Tech 3 is its new closure system, which uses three advanced buckles with micro-adjustable memory ratchets and quick release, self-aligning closures. This weight-saving system offers a quick and precise closure, and ensures a safe and secure fit – a critical feature for motocross and off-road footwear. The ergonomic buckle closure system is also designed to promote high levels of frontal flex so as not to compromise a wide range of lower leg movement. The Tech 3 also offers excellent levels of mobility, as well as critical support and structure for the foot, thus helping to avoid injury. It does this via extensive microfiber accordion inserts on the front and rear and the biomechanical blade system on the inside of the foot. This allows for excellent front and rear flex while giving support and protection to the ankle.

Tech 3 Enduro

The Tech 3 incorporates many of Alpinestars’ innovative protective features of the company’s advanced ‘Tech’ footwear range. It has the innovative one-piece injected dual compound foot shell reinforced internally by a metal shank which protects against excessive foot peg stress. There’s also a reinforced co-injected polymer toe-box for abrasion resistance and an anatomically profiled thermoplastic shin-plate – strategic protection for a range of off-road riding situations.

Stella Tech 3

The Tech 3 is also comfortable. A top gaiter seals out excessive water and dirt entry, integrated soft foam surrounds the ankles and collar, textile interior lining helps with moisture-management and a replaceable foot bed features textile lining. The *CE-certified Stella Tech 3 incorporates all the same comfort and protective features as the men’s version and comes in a black and pink colorway. Specifically designed and developed for a woman’s foot, the Stella Tech 3 offers protection and performance that is uniquely adapted for female riders. The *CE-certified Tech 3 enduro boot share all the same innovations as the Tech 3 motocross boot, as well as Alpinestars’ exclusively developed all-terrain sole. Constructed from a high grip pattern rubber compound and ergonomically designed to offer protection and control on the foot pegs, the sole helps ensure the Tech 3 Enduro is an excellent choice for hardcore enduro riders. ■

ven the smallest engine component can make a difference when it comes to gaining a performance edge over the competition. That is something that Wössner considers when it comes to designing and forging its range of off-road engine parts, which includes complete piston kits, connecting rods, bearing kits and other necessities. Wössner is probably best known for its high-performance forged premium two-stroke and four-stroke piston kits. They are all designed in-house and manufactured on Wössner’s own forges. Each piston kit includes the necessary parts for installation, including the piston, ring, wrist pin and pin locks. Wössner’s lightweight pistons are precisely measured and manufactured to provide the tightest piston-wall clearance possible, which results in an engine that runs quieter. Standard and oversize piston sizes are available for most off-road models, and high-compression ratios are available for four-stroke applications. The four-stroke pistons are constructed using a double-bridged forging design for additional strength and durability. Piston ring sets, wrist pins and circlips can also be ordered separately. The Parts Europe Off-Road catalog contains the extensive list of applications, including a lot of oldermodel motorcycles. While the average motorcycle rider may not have heard of Wössner, the brand is long established in off-road

racing. A number of top teams in MXGP, Supercross and Arenacross use the Wössner piston kits, giving them a strong racing pedigree. Wössner also produces high-quality main bearing kits and needle kits. The main bearing kits include precision-made bearings. Dealers should note that two kits are required for all applications, but some models require separate left and right kits, so be sure to carefully check the applications chart in the Parts Europe Off-Road catalog. Wössner connecting rods are designed to fit OEM bearing and crank pins. They can be paired with the corresponding Wössner piston kit for even more of a performance enhancement. The applications are for the connecting rod only, and they fit a wide variety of offroad models. Since the 1990s, Wössner has been producing highperformance forged pistons. Today, the company has a worldwide presence, including Wössner Italia and Wössner Asia. The company’s primary forges are at their FGM forging facility in Turin, Italy. Currently, Wössner is in the process of building a new facility at its world headquarters in Weil am Rhein, Germany. The modern, larger headquarters will allow the company to triple its current piston production. ■
