Working Together by D on Em de

I

’ve had the good fortune to know Fred Fox for about forty years and along the way have watched him develop relationships in Europe and the United States with many accessory manufacturers in the motorcycle business. Those that have lasted the longest have been where both parties mutually benefitted from working together. This year, Drag Specialties celebrates 50 years in business. Fred didn’t start that company, but when it ran into financial problems from mismanagement in 1988, he saw not only the opportunity to step in and save what was there, but he also envisioned what it could become. Drag Specialties has always had its name on a lot of products, from its original Maltese Cross taillight to its line of Drag Specialties seats that it still sells today. But they could do more than that, and did. Along the way, many makers of motorcycle accessories saw the opportunity to hook up with Drag Specialties for distribution to dealers. This allowed those many builders and product designers more time to focus on what they did best...develop great products. In this issue we feature a look back to when Drag Specialties got started, how it later became a part of Fred Fox’s organization and what

was done to make it grow and become the major brand it is today. When Parts Europe opened almost a decade ago, naturally Drag Specialties products were immediately added to the list of products in stock, as was the large—and ever-growing—list of off-road products from Moose Racing and Moose Utility Division. We also feature in this issue a look at the 2018 Moose Racing line that riders can now enjoy... from the M1.3 boots, to XCR goggles, M1 racewear and many innovative and useful accessories for their motorcycles. The Moose Utility Division story also deserves a look, as UTV riders will want to know about its expanding line of tires and wheels. We congratulate Fred Fox, and the staffs at Drag Specialties, Moose Racing, Moose Utility Division and Parts Europe. It’s such a great business story to see the results of working together with leading product designers and manufacturers around the world to bring great motorcycle, snowmobile, watercraft, ATV and UTV products to market for dealers and riders. ■

NEWS EVENTS Verona Motor Bike Expo CELEBRATING A DECADE OF TWO-WHEELED MADNESS

T

en years after the move from Padova to Verona, the Motor Bike Expo is stronger than ever – and the custom motorcycle segment is getting bigger every year.

With expectations running high, the four-day Expo delivered on all counts. Despite some difficult travel conditions, the show in early January was once again an epicenter of the Italian custom motorcycle scene. It seems that no theme is left uncovered by the Italian bike builders as the range of motorcycles on hand included everything from Café racers, scramblers and choppers, to

Baggers, sportbikes and old school classics. To top things off, it’s not just those popular V-twins from Milwaukee, USA getting the treatment, the customs included traditional Italian marques as well as Indians and Triumph twins. On hand this year from the USA were Cory Ness and his son Zach, custom painter and builder Kirk Taylor, Rod Woodruff from the Buffalo Chip Campground in Sturgis, SD, and even Indian Motorcycle’s president Steve Menneto. The show also features stunt riders, a freestyle motocross exhibition and daring exploits of expert trials riders. ■

Indian Scouts are increasingly popular as a custom platform and Lorenzo Nisi of Lissone-based Bad Boys Garage shows what he can do in that department. Check out the hinged tail section that allows easy access to the exhaust and rear wheel.

While many builders are embracing different manufacturers, the main focus of the custom bikes at the Verona Motor Bike Expo remains those popular American V-twins.

NEWS EVENTS Game On: Thor Riders Take On 2018 Season LIEBER JOINS DESALLE IN SERIES

B

Photos by Bavo Swijgers

y the time you’re reading this, the 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship will be in full swing after the series opener March 4th at the MXGP of Patagonia in Argentina.

Back at the gates in the MXGP class will be Thor/Monster Energy/ Kawasaki rider Clement Desalle, who is joined in the series by Julien Lieber, a fellow Belgian rider making the jump up from MX2. As you’ll recall, in the 2017 season, Desalle pushed through a handful of setbacks – including a painful back injury – throughout the season to place solidly in the overall Top 10 championship points standings at number four. Lieber comes to the Thor/Kawasaki team after a private effort in the MX2 ranks, where he was ranked fifth in the championship standings. As an independently funded rider, Lieber had consistent finishes and even led the championship at one point. “I’m glad to see Julien joining us. There are a lot of young riders coming from MX2 and it will be very interesting,” said Steve Guttridge, Kawasaki European race manager. “Julien has a lot of talent on a bike, rides really well and I’m sure he will move to the 450 really well.” ■

New to the Thor/ Monster Energy/ Kawasaki team, Julien Lieber finished out his MX2 career in 2017 running fifth in the championship standings.

M

ore than 31,800 people visited the CustombikeShow 2017 in Bad Salzuflen, Germany in early December and Parts Europe and Drag Specialties were on hand to showcase their extensive range of brands and products. With four exhibition buildings, 28,000 square meters of floor space, 300 exhibitors and about 1,000 radical custom motorcycles from all over the world, the event continues to be the world’s largest show for the customized motorcycle scene. For Parts Europe and Drag Specialties, the fair is an important opportunity to introduce new parts, present customized show bikes and lead interested customers directly to its dealers.

On hand as co-exhibitors were J.W. Speaker, LA Choppers, S&S Cycle and Techno-Research. Products specialists from these companies were on hand to answer questions about their product lines. In the Parts Europe and Drag Specialties booth, the C-Racer products and Icon collection attracted interest not only from consumers, but also from dealers. “The CustombikeShow is always a good opportunity to improve the personal relationship with our dealers, and to make contact with new dealers,” said Gunther Hildebrandt, team lead sales for the DACH region. ■

The Parts Europe and Drag Specialties booth is prepared and ready for visitors.

Andrew McClellan, J.W. Speaker’s regional sales manager, was impressed by how many visitors were asking for details about the company’s unique adaptive headlight. A BMW R NineT customized by Bohling & Eisele, Karlsruhe attracted plenty of attention.

The S&S Cycle display was a popular spot for performanceminded show attendees. Paul Devine, vice president of sales (left) was on hand to answer their questions. Sandro Scaccia, president, and Regine Moyse, sales/ marketing manager of Techno-Research presenting their products.

The Parts Europe booth featured such vendors as AFX, Drag Specialties, Icon, Moose Racing and Thor, as well as more than 30 other brands. A custom Kawasaki motocross bike was outfitted with products from Spark and Gilles Tooling, while a custom BMW R nineT had parts from J.W. Speaker and Roland Sands Design. Both show bikes attracted a number of visitors who met with Parts Europe sales reps to learn more about the products, and how to find them at their local Parts Europe dealer.

The off-road and snowmobile segments are very big in Scandinavia. Parts Europe was sure to have plenty of products on display to cover those markets.

The powersport business in Scandinavia is based on personal relationships, and many dealers traveled long distances to learn the latest about industry news and products at the shows. Parts Europe says it is committed to attending these shows to keep those relationships strong. ■

rom hard parts to hardy racewear, Moose Racing has riders covered for the new riding season. The company has introduced a host of new products just in time for riders to stock up before heading out to the track or trail.

HEAD TO TOE COVERAGE

The new products join an already extensive list of off-road parts, accessories and apparel that are available from Moose Racing through Parts Europe. Moose Racing is an off-road specialist company that got its start in 1986, producing hard parts for off-road motorcycles.

The M1.3 boots are the next step in the evolution of the M1 boot line. The chassis is constructed with polyurethanecoated synthetic leather that is both abrasion resistant and flexible. On the inner calf, a heavyweight suede leather guard improves abrasion and heat resistance. The shin, ankle and footplates have reinforced TPU panels, which are engineered to improve stability without sacrificing mobility.

In the past 30-plus years, Moose Racing has dedicated itself to providing off-road riders and racers with high-quality, high-performance products while keeping prices competitive. Parts Europe carries thousands of Moose Racing items. In the apparel department, Moose Racing produces off-road and adventure-touring apparel, base layers, knee guards, boots, rain wear and a host of other products. The hard parts line is even more extensive, with products ranging from bolt-on parts to necessities for any racer’s pit.

In the off-road apparel category, Moose Racing has introduced the new M1.3 boots, the new XCR goggle line and updated colorways in the popular M1 collection of pants and jerseys.

Inside, soft EVA foam reinforces impact areas without compromising comfort, while a rigid steel shank-reinforced sole eliminates flex and provides superior foot support. An integrated internal lace loop system keeps the boots firmly in place while the polyester inner lining wicks moisture and keeps the boots from getting damp. As for the design of the M1.3 boots, the low-profile compact lower toe box improves brake feel and the ability to shift.

M1 Racewear

The multi-layer synthetic rubber outsole will last a long time while providing superior grip. The M1.3 boots are tested and certified according to European standard EN 13634:2015. The XCR goggle is an all-new product from Moose Racing. The bold styling includes a large eye port for maximum visibility coupled with an optically pure polycarbonate lens that is coated to provide a scratch-resistant, anti-fog surface. The frame of the XCR goggle is an injected polyurethane material that provides both flexibility and durability. Ventilation on the frame helps release hot air and cuts down on perspiration. One of those vents is on top of the integrated nose guard, which offers maximum roost coverage. The frame is lined with soft multi-density foam with a fleece backing for comfort. The foam also assists with moisture management and provides a barrier to keep out dirt. The XCR goggle stays in place with an elastic strap backed by a tacky silicone print for extra security. The strap feeds through an outrigger system on the frame that is designed to create a consistent seal and a balanced fit.

Riders get to make a few choices when deciding which XCR goggles to go with. The two different designs include Hatch and Camo. Hatch has a prominent Moose Racing logo on the elastic strap, while the Camo option has a stylized “M” built into the graphics. The Hatch option comes in black/hi viz, black/orange, blue/red and green/yellow. Meanwhile, the Camo colors include green/black, yellow/orange, blue/ orange and black. Dealers can now offer riders more color choices when it comes to Moose Racing’s M1 off-road apparel, too. The jerseys and pants in the line have new spring colorways of orange/blue/black and pink/black/blue. Those colors are in addition to the existing options of red/ white/blue, hi-viz/magenta, blue/black, black/hi-viz, red/ black, green/black and orange/black. Needless to say, there are plenty of mix-and-match options between the M1 racewear and the XCR goggles. The M1 racewear collection features semi-ventilated jerseys and pants that are designed to withstand the rigors of both motocross and trail riding. Moose Racing utilizes polyester

cut in that area is oversized to allow an optimal range of motion while on the bike. The seat panel is reinforced, too, adding even more abrasion resistance.

On top of that, the M1 gear has triple-stitched seams, highdenier material in high-abrasion areas, full grain leather panels and high-quality fasteners, ensuring that every aspect of the apparel is as hardy as the material.

Like the M1 jersey, the sublimated graphics on the M1 pants mean that colors stay bold. A three-point waist adjustment system caps off the pants, ensuring a fine-tuned fit. Sizing goes from a 69cm to 94cm (28 to 38.)

The semi-ventilated M1 jersey has a polyester chassis with a V-neck collar. Its quick-drying properties combined with the ventilation ensure that moisture will be pulled away from the skin to keep riders more dry and comfortable, even when they are riding hard.

The M1 gear has the typical features of racewear, such as the pre-bent ergonomic design of the pants, but a nod to current style trends is also apparent. The gear has the more formfitting, athletic fit that is typically seen on top competitive riders. The integrated stretch panels are ideal for the slimmer fit, allowing a full range of movement without bulky styling.

The non-restrictive stretch mini cuffs keep the sleeves in the right spot, and the high-quality sublimated graphics will maintain their color after being washed. Sizing starts at small and goes up to 2XL. Moose Racing’s M1 pants feature a high-denier polyester chassis that has double- and triple-stitched seams. DIRT AND BLING Moose Racing’s hard parts department has grown with the addition of several new products this spring, which range from ways to keep gear looking good to keeping a rider’s boots firmly in place on the pegs.

Boot Wash/Dry Stand

Oil Absorbing Pads are designed specifically for cleaning up oil and similar liquids.

Qualifier Foot Pegs

If a rider’s M1.3 boots get dirty, Moose Racing has the boot wash/dry stand, whose simple but effective design makes it easy to hang boots out to dry. The boots mount upside down so that during washing, water cannot sneak inside the boot. After washing, the boots can stay in place to dry thoroughly. The stand is made of powder-coated steel for durability as well as the ability to withstand dirt, soap and water. A built-in carrying handle makes it easy to transport, even with boots mounted for drying. On the same subject of cleaning up a mess, Moose Racing’s oil absorbing pads are perfect for soaking up drips and spills. They can be kept on hand in the shop, under stored vehicles, under dirty tools and under engine components that are being rebuilt. The pads will not absorb water, but they do absorb 13 to 25 times their weight in oil and related liquids. The 43cm x 48cm (17 inch x19 inch) pad can be wrung out and re-used, and the pads are sold in packs of five. Another Moose Racing hard part that is new to the Parts Europe catalog this year is the bling pack, designed not to clean

up messes but to give a dirtbike a factory racer look. Each part in the pack is CNC machined aluminum for a perfect fit. The contents vary depending on the application, but they include covers and other small high-visibility parts in factorymatched colors, including orange, red, green, blue, and yellow. Moose Racing’s new Qualifier foot pegs are a two-piece lightweight design constructed from CNC machined aluminum alloy. The black base is topped with an extra wide replaceable stainless steel footplate to provide the rider with the ultimate grip. The footplate sits inside a rubber damper, which helps to absorb shock. The foot pegs mount with the OEM springs, so making a swap is easy. Dealers can also order the footplate singly as a replacement piece. Moose Racing offers installation guides on its website, making hard part swaps quick and easy for dealers and riders alike. ■

Reinventing a Revolution

Introducing the new Hypercharger ES

Kuryakyn’s Hypercharger ES features state-of-the-art electronic throttle-response butterfly engagement for precise movement. This eliminates the vacuum-operated fluttering of previous models.

An integrated servomotor connects to the coil to actuate the butterflies smoothly and precisely with every twist of the throttle. This feature eliminates the inconsistent vacuum operation of previous Hypercharger models, creating an interactive experience between rider, motorcycle, and air cleaner. Current availability includes fitment for Milwaukee-Eight Softail and Touring, as well as Twin Cam models. “Our goal was to build on the heritage established through one of the industry’s most recognizable products,” says Kuryakyn industrial design manager Michael Bates. “We built around the framework of the original, with the most recognizable feature being the blowerstyle butterflies. Our team came up with rock-solid servomotor componentry, and then collectively completed thousands of testing miles to ensure it not only functioned properly, but also delivered on the promise of better performance.”

Accessory Classic Faceplate kits transform Hypercharger ES styling in minutes.

Additional performance upgrades for the ES include a new Kuryakyn-designed high-flow K&N filter with larger surface area than the original Hypercharger filter. The larger filter element offers approximately 10 percent more airflow, improved CFM rating, and utilizes a unique end cap with an internal stinger design to direct concentrated airflow into the throttle body.

W

hen you hear the word Hypercharger, think Kuryakyn, the maker of those hot rod-inspired V-twin air cleaners. Now, after hundreds of thousands of units sold worldwide over the past 28 years, Kuryakyn’s journey has come full circle with the introduction of the completely redesigned Hypercharger ES. This is not your father’s Hypercharger. The new Hypercharger ES represents substantial updates in appearance and performance. Kuryakyn product development put in countless hours of research and development crafting a design that pays homage to its predecessor, while also ensuring a healthy dose of modern technology and style was injected into the iconic bloodline. The radical new design is precision engineered with what Kuryakyn refers to as electronic throttle-response butterflies.

Protecting all that state-of-the-art technology is the Hypercharger ES’ modern, aggressively styled modular housing constructed from high-quality A380 aluminum. Available in three finish options, the modular design allows users to easily alter the ES’ styling with Kuryakyn’s Classic Faceplate Kits (sold separately) that completely transform the look in minutes. “In designing the ES, we took inspiration from modernera muscle cars that emphasize muscular lines and an aggressive stance,” Bates says. “The Hypercharger’s lineage means a great deal to Kuryakyn. Our entire team played a role in developing the new Hypercharger ES, starting with design conceptualization and continuing throughout the testing phase in order to create a product that blends performance with style.” ■

f there was ever any question whether popular fashion influences motorcycle apparel, then Icon’s line of hooded jackets is the answer. With hoodies showing up on everything from sweatshirts to dresses these days, Icon has embraced the hood with apparel like the Varial jacket. The Varial jacket and matching pants are newcomers to the Icon 1000 line this spring. This iteration of a hooded jacket started with a coated nylon chassis that has been reinforced with drum-dyed leather paneling on the sleeves. ometimes, making one change on a motorcycle can be like tipping over the first domino in a line. That is certainly the case when it comes to swapping out stock handlebars for something taller, which almost always requires a new set of cables to match the added height. LA Choppers has an enormous list of applications for cable kits that keep handlebar swaps hassle-free for both Harley-Davidson dealers and riders. And “enormous” is no exaggeration: the company has cable kits for most Harley models from 1996 to current, including hydraulic and ABS models. The custom cable kits come in a wide variety of lengths to accommodate a whole range of handlebar heights. Each kit contains the correct length throttle, idle and clutch cables, as well as the front brake line with a chrome T-junction, fittings and banjos with copper crush washers. In other words, each LA Choppers kit aims to take care of all the dominoes tipped over by the handlebar swap. To make it even easier for dealers, LA Choppers built www.handlebarcables.com, a website designed to help navigate the fitment of the cables. Simply enter the year and model of the motorcycle, plus the handlebars that are being installed. You’ll then be provided with the Parts Europe part number for the corresponding kit, as well as a list of everything

inside the kit and individual replacement part numbers. LA Choppers offers both a standard cable kit as well as a complete kit, which includes the electrical wire extensions. Both kits come in several finish options, including stainless braided, Midnight and black vinyl. The traditional stainless braided kit has chrome-plated fittings, and the lines have a clear-coated exterior to enhance their looks and to protect them from abrasion. The Midnight series kits come with the clutch and brake lines covered in a black smoke tinted coating with pure black fittings throughout. The lines have a graphite or carbon fiber look, which looks especially good when combined with blacked out controls and covers on the bike. Black vinyl/stainless cable kits include a black vinyl clutch line and brake lines with chrome fittings, banjo bolts and crush washers. And of course, LA Choppers has plenty of aftermarket handlebars to go with those cable kits. The mix of styles, heights and applications includes handlebars as tall as 48.5cm (19 inches), but not to worry: LA Choppers has just the right cable kit for that swap. ■

Thor and MXGP 2018 Premium Gear, Premier Series

W

hen it comes to Motocross Grand Prix (MXGP), fans all over the world tune in to follow the performance of their favorite riders. They not only pay attention to how they’re racing, but also to what they’re riding and – important for here – what they’re wearing. The gear their heroes wear, what they choose to use and how they choose to outfit themselves, does not go unnoticed. Amateur riders and racers looking for any perceived performance edge, or simply looking to emulate the pros, pay close attention to the racewear kits and protective gear they see in MXGP. And the gear that’s consistently on the podium literally has Thor written all over it. This year there’ll

be ample opportunity to take a good, long look at it all, too. Beginning with the MXGP of Patagonia in March, and not concluding until October with the Monster Energy FIM event in the USA, the 2018 MXGP season will be the longest one ever. Traveling with globe, there are stops in countries large and small and at every one of those stops riders will get a first-hand look at the gear the pros have chosen. This year, some of the hardest-chargers on the circuit all have one thing in common – they’ve prepared for battle with Thor. Clement Desalle and Julien Lieber from the Monster Energy Kawasaki team have paired up with Thor for the 2018 season. So has Jordi Tixier with the new BOS Suspension

MXGP team. Evgeny “Bobby” Bobryshev has chosen Thor, as well, and all of this comes as no surprise. Thor racewear is designed by racers, for racers. This is gear coming from the company founded by Torsten Hallman, himself a four-time Motocross World Champion. By choosing to team up with Thor, Clement Desalle, Julien Lieber, Jordi Tixier and Evgeny Bobryshev are continuing a winning tradition that began decades ago. They’re poised to take up that challenge, to jump onto the podiums and grab those trophies. Clement Desalle has already achieved a top-three world ranking for five consecutive years. With 25 MXGPs under his belt he’s had a combined 22 wins. A native of Belgium, Desalle began racing the big 450cc bikes when he was just 16 years old and, unfazed by the pack of famous competitors around him, quickly worked his way through the ranks. Now 27, an unfortunate rash of injuries have held him back lately, but with his innate speed and skill he still raced to multiple GP victories in each of the last three seasons. With the technical support and backing of Team Kawasaki and Thor, 2018 could well be his best season ever. Desalle’s Monster Energy Kawasaki teammate Julien Lieber is set for a stellar season, as well. Coming over from

the MX2 ranks to the factory team for the MXGP class, Lieber had consistent finishes in 2017, even leading the championship at one point. Just 23 years old and a selected member of the Belgian Motocross of Nations team, Lieber is already working closely with Desalle and Team Kawasaki as he’s adapting to the top-class 450s. Tixier, with the new BOS Suspension MXGP Team, will have Thor support throughout 2018 too. A former MX2 World Champion, Tixier will race the entire Monster Energy FIM Motocross World Championship aboard KTM 450 SX-F bikes, and he’s looking for great things from those BOS components. Bobryshev is also contesting MXGP 2018 with Thor support. Debuting back in 2005 in MX2, Bobryshev has had a string of winning seasons with the HRC top team ever since. Fans, riders and racers can look for this big Russian to be right in the thick of the action throughout 2018. The 2018 MXGP season is in full swing and with hardchargers and front-runners like this all flying the Thor colors there’s little doubt that your customers will be asking you about it. ■

Metric Bikes Unite! New Headlight Adapter Kits

T

here’s no doubt that J.W. Speaker’s 8790 Adaptive beam LED headlight will change your customers’ perception of what it’s like to ride a motorcycle at night.

Now, J.W. Speaker has a system to retrofit that LED light onto more than a thousand different makes and models of metric bikes, including many of the popular bikes from BMW, Ducati, Moto Guzzi and Triumph.

Backed by J.W. Speaker’s decades of experience with high-end LED lighting, the 8790 Adaptive gives riders the ability to light up the dark areas of corners while riding through a bend. The high-tech 18cm LED light features embedded sensors that work to calculate banking angles while cornering. In real time, those sensors adjust and direct precise beam patterns to areas of the road that would otherwise be dark.

The company’s lineup of adapter kits will allow those Bonneville and Monster riders the chance to enjoy the increased level of comfort and confidence that many Harley-Davidson riders now count on. Not only does that 8790 technology seemingly bend lighting through turns, it also projects light further down the road, making those riders that much more visible to surrounding traffic.

However, up until now, the 8790’s high-tech features have only been available to V-twin customers, where that plugand-play ability to light up dark corners of the road have been met with much acclaim.

J.W. Speaker partnered with Motodemic, a custom motorcycle parts and accessory shop in California, USA, to develop the adapters because of the inherent problem of retrofitting LED lights into certain headlight buckets. The heat sinks on the back of the lights make them too deep to properly fit. This has been an issue regardless of headlight diameter or brand, and now J.W. Speaker has solved this problem with its headlight adapter kits.

The adapter kits come in a variety of configurations, allowing the 8790 headlight to be installed on more than a thousand different makes and models.

The kits include everything necessary to get that 8790 Adaptive light installed so your customers spend less time setting up and more time riding and enjoying the light’s unique benefits. It comes with nearly all the hardware, wiring harnesses and tools (except for a screwdriver) required to get the job done. There’s even a microfiber cloth on which the LED light can be placed to avoid scratching the lens. J.W. Speaker offers 18 different kits to cover a variety of OEMs. They come in the following finishes, depending on the motorcycle — chrome, raw aluminum and black. ■ Now your metric bike customers can enjoy the unique features of J.W. Speaker’s 8790 Adaptive beam LED headlight.

Performance Exhausts for New and Old Models

A

FMF is offering some great options for this machine. To definitely increase performance and overall ride-ability, they offer a complete dual exhaust setup. This bike requires two separate and complete systems – one for each side because of this new Honda engine configuration.

And, as much as FMF is committed to research and development of new products that match the OEM’s new models, they also work hard to keep their existing, popular, high performing and good-selling exhaust product line looking fresh and up-to-date.

Of course both systems have FMF’s internationally recognized Factory 4.1 RCT anodized blue Titanium mufflers with carbon fiber endcaps. And, don’t forget FMF’s patented Bomb headers. They, like the mufflers, are also duals (one on each side). There are huge performance gains with this system, a much better look, and slightly less weight.

Let’s start with those hot new exhausts, specifically for the 2018 Honda CRF250R. We’re talking a brand new model with that exciting completely new twin cam engine and dual exhaust port cylinder.

Next up of course are dual Factory 4.1 RCT slip-ons in anodized blue with carbon end caps for the new CRF250R. Designed to work with the standard headers – or with FMF headers at a later time to complete the system – these

slip-ons are a simple to install and are a very effective upgrade to the performance and appearance. For another new 2018 machine, the recently introduced Yamaha YZ65, FMF has already produced and shipped product to Parts Europe. Choose from the Fatty or Factory Fatty for the front pipe. For the silencer there is a choice of Powercore 2 or the quieter, Turbinecore 2. For your customers who already own one of those popular FMF Factory 4.1 exhausts (any make or model year machine) there is now an easy way to give the muffler a new look and style makeover. FMF now offers replacement sticker kits in five different colorways.

FMF’s dual Factory 4.1 RCT slip-ons in anodized blue with carbon end cap will work with the stock Honda CRF250R header pipe and with FMF headers.

Not only can your customers color-match their riding gear to their bikes, they can also customize their FMF performance exhaust with stickers to coordinate with their factory colors. They can choose from red, blue, yellow, orange, or green. These replacement stickers are of the same high quality material and proper fit of the originals. Along with this style and look upgrade for FMF’s race products, Parts Europe has the necessary replacement and maintenance items for all of the current FMF Racing products. Items like replacement end caps, muffler packing, retaining straps, inserts, O-ring kits, and more are readily available. The best way to find these items is to use the FMF Racing website and then simply supply the proper FMF item number to your Parts Europe representative or convert it yourself using the secure Parts Europe dealer site.

These replacement stickers are a quick way for your FMF customers to upgrade and refresh their existing FMF exhaust, and color match to their riding gear or factory colors.

In addition to those newest model year bike exhaust products, FMF also has upgraded silencers for the popular Beta 2-strokes in the newer larger canister 2.1 style. Last, but certainly not least, due to popular demand for their look and performance, there are also now Turbinecore 2.1 silencers for the older KTM 250/300s (2004-2010), Honda CR250 (2002-2007), Kawasaki KX250 (2003-2007), and Suzuki RM250 (2003-2008) bikes. These are fully developed, power-producing silencers designed to give riders that extra edge out on the track or trail and, with slightly larger silencer bodies and high quality packing, they are a ‘sound’ investment (they slightly reduce decibels). These exhausts give these older machines a look and style upgrade to match the new ones. Whether your customers have an older motorcycle or ATV and want to upgrade their exhaust, or have just bought a new machine and want to get the most from it, look to FMF Racing Performance exhaust products from Parts Europe today. ■

he big show is about to begin. No other type of motorcycle racing has a bigger following than MotoGP and the teams, riders and organizers are working hard to make sure that their 2018 series will be as good or better than any previous season. In January, the full contingent were flown to Southeast Asia along with containers filled with the very latest racing machines to shake down their equipment for the year ahead. By that time, most major engine and chassis designs had been decided upon, but some final experiments were still possible before real racing begins at Qatar. The testing included a stop at one familiar location— the Sepang International Circuit—where the Shell Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix is held annually each fall, and a new addition to the series—the Chang International Circuit—site of the PTT Thailand Grand Prix on October 7th. On January 28th, the MotoGP riders were on the track

The two tests in Southeast Asia could hardly be more different for Ducati rider Jorge Lorenzo. After posting the fastest motorcycle lap ever recorded at the Sepang circuit, he tumbled down to 16th best at Buriram, Thailand.

With 115 career Grand Prix victories, Valentino Rossi has a less-than-promising set of tests, finishing only 9th best in Malaysia and 12th in Thailand.

Some of the busiest people at the tests were the Michelin tire engineers, who monitored the tire performance of every machine on the track.

While most pre-season tests are private, the four-year-old Chang International Circuit in Thailand opened its gates to the public for a first look at the machines and riders who will make their debut later this year for the first MotoGP event there.

The Ducati team has experimented more than any other in recent years with external wings on their machines and they seemed to have found a design that suits their pilots for the coming season. Former world champion Jorge Lorenzo struggled last season in his debut on Ducati, but he pleased both himself and his team bosses when he ended the test with the fastest lap ever achieved there on a motorcycle. Lorenzo gave an encouraging assessment of his Sepang test: “The most important thing is that the bike is working, it is giving me a good feeling and is improved a lot of areas compared to last year. As I said on the first day, the bike has improved and is more suited to my riding style and I can take profit of my strong points.” Ducati riders Andrea Dovizioso and Jack Miller also had strong tests at Sepang, giving Ducati three of the top five positions.

The most troubled brand at the test was Yamaha. Movistar Yamaha riders Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi both complained of handling issues reminiscent of their problems in 2017. They finished the test in 7th and 9th place respectively with satellite Yamaha team rider Johann Zarco in 10th.

Honda had a satisfying test in Malaysia, but not so much from the reigning world champion Marc Marquez, but his

Two weeks later, the teams all relocated to Thailand for a first-ever test at the Chang International Circuit. Extreme heat and humidity welcomed the riders to the new circuit, as did a huge crowd of Asian racing fans who were invited to come see and hear the fabulous MotoGP machines in their debut on the Thailand track. The Hondas of Dani Pedrosa, Marc Marquez and Cal Crutchlow continued to run as well there as they did in Malaysia. Pedrosa would end up at the top of the time sheets at the test, with Marquez up to 3rd and Crutchlow 4th. Yamaha factory riders Viñales and Rossi continued to have

ig UTVs and big jobs require tires and wheels that are up to the task. To meet that demand, Moose Utility Division has an array of products that keep UTVs rolling, even under the heaviest of loads. The company’s heavy-duty solutions have applications for nearly all of the largest UTVs in production, giving customers a wide range of options to suit their needs. Moose Utility Division’s rigid tires are built to accommodate the heaviest UTVs on the market. The 8-ply radial construction is ultra durable, so not only can the tires handle the extra weight, but they are very resistant to punctures, too. Wide shoulder lugs protect the sidewalls from rocks and other hazards, offering an extra level of durability. The tread pattern and the wide footprint combine to offer exceptional traction for going wherever the trail (or lack of one) might lead. The rigid tires are both E-Marked and Reach compliant for the EU market, while also rated for limited road use. an extra 1-inch, 1½-inch, 2-inch or 2¼-inch range. The spacers also eliminate rubbing against shocks, struts and exhaust pipes to offer better clearance. Moose Utility Division carries a wide range of wheels, but for large-scale applications, the 420 X wheel sits at the top of the choices. The 420 X has a big 17x7 size, and it was specifically designed to handle the larger 17-inch tires in the UTV market. The wheel is rated for loads of 589kg (1,300 lbs.) and tested to high quality standards to ensure that it meets all requirements. In addition to that, Moose Utility Division X-rays every single wheel while it is on the manufacturing line to make sure that the wheels are properly made and are of high quality. Just because the 420 X wheel is functional doesn’t mean it has to look like it. The stylish design comes in two finishes – gloss black or gloss black with a raw machined aluminum lip. CELEBRATING THE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY

CUSTOM FROM THE START Drag Specialties continues to keep its dealers educated and up-to-date on new products. It does so with its two NVP Product Expos and nationwide training tours.

T

hink about this: Harley-Davidson sold about 27,000 new bikes in 1968, and 50 years ago the American V-twin aftermarket parts industry itself was composed of only a few small companies offering a limited number of products. How things have changed. Today we know there are nearly 250,000 new Harleys sold annually in the USA, and the aftermarket business is comprised of hundreds of small and big manufacturers spread across the world. Heading the charge of that aftermarket business is Drag Specialties, the leading distributor of parts, accessories and apparel for those V-twins, and a company that commands a global network of dealers. Founded in 1968, Drag Specialties is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, a remarkable feat in the motorcycling world.

Custom products for customizing motorcycles, that’s where Drag Specialties got its start and its still what the company does better than anyone else.

The company is recognized as the major player in the V-twin aftermarket. Five decades of dedication, hard work, savvy marketing and sharp business acumen has helped it become the industry leader it is today. However, before it became a giant, Drag Specialties first had to become, well, a small company. With that, let’s take a quick look back at the company’s first 50 years.

PARTS EUROPE MAGAZINE

APRIL 2018

The beginning in this case would be the starting line. As the name suggests, Drag Specialties’ roots reach deep into the sport of motorcycle drag racing where company founder Tom Rudd competed on quarter-mile tracks with his modified HarleyDavidson Sportster. By 1965, Rudd and his 77-cubic-inch Sportster were performing quite well in the A-Dragster class, and soon fellow competitors looked to him and two of his racing friends for help with their Sportster engines. About that same time, the trio of racers began building and modifying customers’ engines in their garage, turning a small profit although they had yet to form an official business with an official name; their goal was simply to earn a few extra bucks to help subsidize their racing habit. As the story goes, one day a potential customer called Rudd on the telephone and inquired, “Is this Drag Specialties?” Without hesitation, Rudd replied that yes, it was, and the name stuck. Even though the Drag Specialties moniker remained, the company’s philosophy of doing business soon changed. Rudd, who was a progressive thinker and businessman, one day suggested to his two business partners that they should build and market some performance and custom bike parts. The three young men took a vote and when the ballots were counted the tally showed one in favor of the parts business, two opposed. It could have ended there, but Rudd was persistent and rather than give up he offered to buy out his partners. He handed over some cash and they turned over all rights to the name Drag Specialties. Overnight Drag Specialties transformed from a servicing company to a manufacturing brand. A company is only as good as its products, so Rudd began developing a product line that he felt the fledging custom motorcycle industry

would want. About that same time, the movie Easy Rider captivated a generation of young American motorcycle owners looking to convert their bikes to choppers. Rudd sought to tap into that demand by offering them cool parts, and called various small shops making parts to ask about distributing their wares through his fledgling company. Small companies and bike builders such as Smith Brothers & Fetrow joined the Drag Specialties bandwagon, and soon enough Rudd began manufacturing and offering his own parts. The Knight Light, Coffin Light, Maltese Cross taillight, Dragtron air filter, and the wildly popular round rib pegs were among the first items to be listed. The product line itself targeted American V-twin and other bikes alike. Eventually Drag Specialties published its first catalog that remained in use through 1972; the second edition reached dealers the following year. By then the company had expanded the product line to include oil tanks, handlebars, sissy bars and custom seats. There was even a division for polishing and chrome plating parts. Naturally this growth meant more employees were needed to help fill orders, monitor inventory, ship parts and so on. Fittingly, early staffers included some former drag racers, among them Jim Preisler serving as general manager, and Scott Dale to help Rudd’s wife Penny run advertising. Another drag-racing veteran, Doug Douglas, spearheaded product research. Rudd recruited from the non-racer ranks, too. Jim Betlach, who had promoted a successful custom motorcycle show in Minneapolis, MN, USA, was tasked with organizing what has grown to become one of the largest national sales teams in the motorcycle aftermarket industry today. By the early 1980s Drag Specialties was in top gear and making huge strides.

THE NEXT CHAPTER Then misfortune struck, and Rudd was prompted to sell Drag Specialties. By 1988 LeMans Corporation founder and chairman Fred Fox had purchased the Minnesota-based business and put it under his company’s umbrella. The first order of business was to build the dealers’ trust, and so Fox called on industry veteran Carl Beard, who had previously managed the purchasing department under Rudd, to assist in guiding the recovery. Fox’s plan was to have Drag Specialties concentrate almost solely on parts distribution, and so all of the manufacturing divisions were dissolved. That is, all but one division — Drag Specialties Seats. Fox had plans for it. Kevin Lehan, who had worked in the seats division since 1974 eventually was promoted to general manager for Drag Specialties Seats, a position he still holds today. All current manufacturing steps, including advanced techniques such as vacuumform molding and integrated foam tooling for shaping and cutting, were adopted to put Drag Specialties Seats at the forefront of the industry. Lehan still has all the original tooling and patterns for those early seats, everything necessary to crank out the same models that were popular way back when. Another familiar face who joined the company in 1974 was Tom Motzko. “I worked in the warehouse, helping ship parts,” recalls Motzko. “We had a warehouse full of 3-foot-by-3-foot containers filled with all sorts of new parts.” Today Motzko helps coordinate the product lines between Drag Specialties and the vendors supplying the thousands of parts the company carries. Fox also directed the LeMans team to update the Drag Specialties Catalog, adding more and more parts each year, while improving the book’s

In fact, the company counts as enthusiasts everyone from the workers in the Drag warehouses and upper management to that expert sales force and technical support team. They’re riding everything from Bobbers and choppers to full dressers and old Ironhead Sportsters.

For Drag Specialties, it’s always been about the ride, starting way back with Tom Rudd and his drag racing buddies. Today it’s no different. One of the company’s most popular events is the annual dealer ride, where dealers, vendors and Drag employees gather in riding hotspots throughout the country for some two-wheel therapy.

It’s been that way since those early days with Rudd and his drag racing cohorts, and it points to a company that truly understands its customers and vendors because they’re all about the same thing – riding motorcycles.

Edge Advertising, which handles much of the marketing and advertising for LeMans, was tasked with giving the catalog a new and unique look. Soon enough the production staff at Edge casually referred to the Drag Specialties Catalog as “the fat book.” As Edge Advertising’s Cheryl Rugland explains, “When we were meeting to discuss the 1996 catalog the name was brought up to Fred Fox and he liked it. lpinestars’ new protection systems for 2018 build on years of product development and high levels of professional competition to offer motocross and off-road riders of all levels and age excellent performance and comfort. Highlights for 2018 include the Sequence range of protection and the versatile Bionic Action Jacket, which is extremely lightweight and ventilated with CE-certified protection on the shoulder and elbows (level 1), back (level 1) and chest (level 2). Alpinestars’ Bionic Action Jacket offers strategic protection without being bulky or impeding movement thanks to its ergonomically engineered design and build. With rigorous attention to detail, each protection plate and BIONIC ACTION JACKET

component has been developed to reduce weight while providing close-fitting body coverage. The Bionic Action Jacket’s plates are contoured to the natural curvature of the body and incorporate airflow channeling to prevent heat build-up. All plates (back, chest, elbows and shoulder) are flexible and lightweight, and feature an innovative integrated grid structure that absorbs and dissipates energy forces across its surface during an impact. The jacket’s back protector features three articulated plates to allow for greater flexibility and adaptive fit in all riding positions. The plates are designed to interlock in the event of a crash to reduce potential injury to the spine area. All of the jacket’s protection surfaces are held tightly and securely in position thanks to the jacket’s Elastane stretch mesh body vest and elastic kidney belt system that gives a customized, secure fit. There is also a Youth Bionic Action Jacket version available, which was developed specially for younger or smaller-framed riders. Alpinestars’ CE-certified level 1 Sequence Knee protector is ideal for racers and recreational riders alike. The Sequence was designed for a close performance fit, weight saving and streamlining. The protector plates feature the same innovative grid structure to effectively dampen impact energy and are constructed from a polymer performance blend for flex and mobility. The interior of the Sequence Knee Protector has a strategically positioned elastic cup insert, which helps to protect the knee joint and helps promote improved fit. The knee protector plates are incorporated into a stretch Elastane sleeve to keep the protection securely in position.

SEQUENCE ELBOW PROTECTOR

The Sequence protection range also features a version for the elbow, sharing all the same performance benefits and ergonomics as the knee protector. Both have dual strap hook-and-loop grip closure that offers secure fitment, while allowing for unrestricted freedom of movement. The straps include silicone pull tabs to allow the rider to conveniently close the protection while wearing gloves. SEQUENCE KNEE PROTECTOR

SEQUENCE PRO SHORT

Alpinestars’Sequence Pro Shorts are designed for a close fit under motocross pants. These shorts feature a mesh main shell and perforated padding for high levels of breathability and air-cooling. Made from a technical stretch mesh, these shorts have a multi-panel, body-mapped design for compression support. They also feature a newly developed multi-density chamois padding that provides comfort for various riding positions and gives unrestricted movement. The Sequence Pro Short has perforated viscoelastic inserts on the upper thigh and hip for additional coverage and fit. ■

Keeping a Motorcycle Leak-Free

T

he factory seals around a motorcycle’s shifter shaft and output shaft, too often out of sight and out of mind, play a pretty important role in the health and well-being of that motorcycle’s engine.

Obviously, their primary role is to keep an engine leak free, keeping all the oils and lubricants inside where they belong, not outside making a mess of everything. Just as important, however, those seals are there to keep water, dirt, dust or any other contaminants out of the engine, where that debris can do real damage. When the shifter shaft and output shaft are perfectly sealed the oil stays cleaner longer, internal engine components lead a longer, healthier life and the motorcycle, along with its parking spot, stays cleaner, too.

In its development and testing of any gasket or seal, Cometic will carefully analyze the environment in which that gasket or seal will have to perform and the job it’s asked to do. They then spec the proper materials and required manufacturing technologies to produce a high-performing replacement. Every Cometic gasket and seal meets today’s everchanging marketplace, and are compatible with modern lubricants and fuels. An expanded range of shift shaft and output shaft seals with a wide range of applications are the latest examples and Parts Europe has them all. Along with those new shift-shaft and output-shaft seals ask your rep about Cometic’s new water-pump repair kits, as well. They’re available now and come complete

GASKETS AND SEALS

Cometic’s gaskets and seals exceed OEM specifications, they’re an exact fit and are easily installed. They help keep engines leak-free, and seal out any dirt, dust or other contaminants.

No seal, however, lasts forever. Over time a seal can dry out, crack and outright fail. The needed replacements, however, are as near as Parts Europe and a full lineup of new shaft seals added to the Cometic Gasket lineup. Cometic’s gaskets and seals exceed OEM specifications, they’re an exact-fit and are easily installed. Just as importantly, Cometic’s gaskets and seals, all those shaft seals included, are manufactured from a comprehensive range of high-quality materials. They also employ advanced technologies like MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) or high-tech synthetic blends such as Aramid fiber when that’s appropriate.

with everything needed for a comprehensive waterpump rebuild. Here again, all the oil seals exceed OEM spec, the correct water pump cover gaskets are included along with new impeller shaft bearings and all the drain plug crush washers and O-rings. Of special note are the primarycover gaskets designed to aid sealing on damaged, less-than-perfect surfaces. ■

BATTERY CHARGERS

Field Rescue

Battery-to-Battery Charging

T

here are times where your customers are nowhere near an AC power outlet, but they need to charge a vehicle’s 12V battery. Sure, you can jumpstart a 12V battery from another vehicle, but if that battery has developed sulphation and lost its ability to hold charge, the “no start” problem repeats the next morning. If a customer has a flat 12.8V-13.2V lithium (LiFePO4) battery, jump starting is risky. A discharged lithium battery can suffer serious damage if high current is dumped into it, especially the smaller four cell (2-3Ah) batteries now delivered standard in 2018 off-road motorcycles. OptiMate DC to DC is a perfect and safe solution for any powersport battery, including 12.8V-13.2V lithium batteries. Hook it up to a 12V source battery (a customer’s car or van) and then to the flat 12V lead-acid or 12.8V-13.2V lithium battery — even a lithium battery with built in BMS (battery management system) protection. The OptiMate DC to DC will automatically reset the BMS (if the battery has one) and then save that flat low-volt battery, charge it at 2 Amps, then test and maintain the battery. The good news for that customer impatient to ride, with a charge rate of 2 Amps they can start their motorcycle in a short while. ■ perfect travel companion for that dead battery emergency, trackside or on tour.

COMPANY PROFILE

A Grip on History

From Buffalo Horns to Rubber

O

riginally founded as Plastiche Cassano Srl, most people around the world now know the company as ProGrip, a manufacturer of high-quality motorcycle grips for decades.

Started by Francesco Assaghi, the grandfather of the current owners, this family business was originally launched in 1925 and was located in Cassano Magnago, just outside of Milano, Italy. In the 1920s and 1930s, Plastiche Cassano specialized in the production of handlebar grips made with buffalo horns, which were boiled, dried and turned on lathes. The bicycle and motorcycle industries were in their infancy and Plastiche Cassano was supplying grips to both. Immediately after World War II, the first handlebar grips in plastic, Bakelite and acetate were produced. In those days the production capacity was of about 1,000 pairs of grips per day. Since those early days, ProGrip has continually expanded its operations. Today ProGrip produces more than 200,000 grips per day, and 70 percent of the company’s products are exported worldwide. With decades of experience in all aspects of motorcycling, ProGrip offers a wide range of high-quality grips. The manufacturing process starts with the raw materials purchased from highly reliable suppliers, offering great quality.

ProGrip has come a long way since its grips were made from buffalo horns. The company’s big lineup includes grips for all forms of powersports activities.

It should be noted that theses raw materials comply with the European standard safety standards EN/71 (non-toxic materials). ProGrip carries out a rigorous control on the quality of the raw material, both in the company and in specialized laboratories that issue quality certificates. The production process is performed according to strict written rules that are distributed to all the company’s staff staff. From the production of the molds to the operations of the shipping department, everything is planned and checked scrupulously. The quality control of the products takes place twice — the first check is carried out during the production phase, when each operator has the obligation to control every single piece produced. For every 100 pieces, these operators must check the aesthetic and dimensional features with specialized tools. The second quality control takes place before packaging the products, when an operator performs a further check of the size and finish of the pieces for each individual box. This attention to detail allows ProGrip to offer a high-quality product at a reasonable price for your motorcycling customers. In addition to grips, ProGrip also offers items like off-road goggles, which are used by many MXGP riders. Parts Europe also carries ProGrip’s goggles with the roll-off goggles system, another favorite of racers, both professional and amateur. ■

Parts Europe also stocks a broad range of goggles from ProGrip.

Suspension Expansion The Growth of YSS

T

his year marks the first time that Parts Europe has offered YSS products to dealers, but the highperformance shock absorber brand is already well known. The YSS suspension components for scooters and motorcycles that are now available to dealers through Parts Europe have a history that dates back to 1983. YSS (which stands for Your Supreme Suspension) was started in Samutprakarn, Thailand. The company grew significantly for nearly two decades, becoming a recognized brand in the domestic market. By 1997, YSS was poised to embark on a global sales and marketing drive, entering the markets in Asia, South America, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. In 2005, YSS got a new partner in the form of noted suspension expert Harry Essen, who brought his extensive knowledge of shock absorber technology and design to the company. Essen helped establish a European center in the Netherlands for product development and technology transfer, a move that helped to greatly increase the YSS presence in Europe.

YSS continues to develop products by utilizing the latest research and design technologies. YSS says that its core values of “iRD2B” (Intelligent Information Technology, Research, Development, Design and Branding) go into every component. To put its products to the ultimate test, YSS also develops suspension components in road and off-road racing series throughout the world. Among the YSS products that Parts Europe carries are Top Line shock absorbers, which are high-performance gas shock absorbers with adjustable length, spring pre-load, rebound and/or compression depending on model. Parts Europe will also stock Eco-Line shock absorbers, which are high performance gas shock absorbers with spring preload, and oil shock absorbers for scooters. YSS’s extensive product line means that there are applications for a lot of older-model motorcycles as well as modern ones. Parts Europe now carries a wide range of YSS suspension products that cover a broad line of applications.

As YSS continued to grow, the company built a new factory in 2010. Today, YSS has a product range of over 5,000 items that covers 2,500 models of motorcycles, scooters, ATVs, UTVs, cars and special-purpose vehicles.

Parts for a Top-End Rebuild

Y

our customers’ next 4-stroke top-end rebuild should involve inspecting the valves, valve springs, and cam chains. In some cases, they may just need to adjust the valves with an adjustment in valve shim sizes. In other cases, they will need to replace their valve train components. Replacing and maintaining valve train components doesn’t have to involve overpriced aftermarket parts, or cheap parts that leave quality to be desired. ProX Racing Parts offers replacement valves, valve springs, and cam chains, along with the shims and seals needed for reassembly.

To complete that valve train freshening up, ProX steel valve springs are available to accompany both titanium and steel valves. Replacing the cam chain is always recommended when the top end is apart. A timing chain failure in a 4-stroke can be detrimental, which is why ProX has partnered up with Borg Warner in Japan to supply OEM quality cam chains. ■

Some 4-stroke engines come equipped with titanium valves as original equipment, but the quality can be lacking. ProX titanium valves are forged in one piece for added strength, and are Chromium Nitride coated for surface hardness and temperature resistance that exceeds OEM standards. These valves are available whether upgrading OEM titanium parts or existing steel parts.

it could be a brand-new set of forward controls, custom pegs or floorboards. New levers and hand-controls are another possibility, and so are custom brake calipers. Even something as simple as a new rear pulley and belt can bring a smile. BDL/GMA has all of this and more. When customers come looking for new parts for the new riding season, point them toward the broad lineup of products from BDL and GMA.

new riding season is here and once again riders are on the lookout for something new. For some that’ll mean a new bike, but for many HarleyDavidson riders it’s going to be a new look and feel for the one they already own. One place you can point these riders toward is BDL/GMA. That new-look can be as dramatic as an open-belt primary, something that’s definitely going to get noticed, or

No one’s left out here, either. Applications cover the entire Harley-Davidson lineup, all years, all models. Those eyepopping primary drives, for instance, are available for everything from the earliest Panheads and Knuckleheads to the newest Milwaukee-Eights. The new master-cylinder and lever assemblies have cylinder-bore options of 9/16-inch, 5/8-inch and 11/16-inch bore sizes and there are perch-and-lever setups for cable-style clutches. All of these items are available with or without switch kits with momentary switches and chrome buttons. ■

Factory-Team Technology for Everyday Riders

A

nother year of racing brings another year of exciting new machines under race team tents. Factory and private teams alike equip their bikes with highly advanced and high-performing parts. While there are a lot of amazing looking parts on the outside of the motorcycles, some of the most impressive technology can be found inside the engine. Wiseco’s Racer Elite piston line brings factory team level technology to the powersports market. In testing, the Wiseco Racer Elite 4-stroke pistons reduced blow-by by almost 40 percent, and netted a 2.9hp gain. Racer Elite pistons are CNC machined billet aluminum, featuring an asymmetrical skirt design. This means there is less skirt material on the minor thrust side of the piston, resulting in less unneeded material, lower friction, and less weight. Asymmetrical skirts have been used frequently in the automotive racing world, but are being introduced to powersports with Racer Elite pistons. Performance increases with the Racer Elite is also attributed to the ultra-flat piston ring groove and lapped compression ring. The ring grooves are precision machined for extreme flatness, and the compression rings

are lapped for a flatter surface, which allows for a more efficient compression seal. Racer Elite piston kits come complete with piston, rings, circlips, and a DLC coated wrist pin, and are available for popular 4-stroke dirt bike applications. ■

Radiator Protection

Guard Against Mud, Sand and Stones

M

ud, sand and stones are a regular part of most of the off-road and motocross events in which your customers compete. Some of these races are long events that take a toll on the machine, and one particularly vulnerable item on the motorcycles are the radiators. Shrouds and louvers usually protect them, but often the difference between winning and losing, or even finishing is just one more level of protection. That’s where Hurly Racing Parts comes into the picture. Hurly Racing protective radiator covers are designed to shield your customer’s radiators from the mud, sand and stones riders encounter on the track and trail. They’re made from a fine, but very strong fabric mesh and they feature two elastic bands that loop around the top and bottom of each radiator louver.

These Hurly Racing protective radiator covers are available for most motocross and Enduro machines, and have been employed by many top teams. They are quick and easy to install and are sold in pairs. Hurly Racing has many other outstanding products to offer your customers. Their mats are another good example. These mats protect the ground and therefore the environment, as they absorb oil, coolant, and dust from machines as they are being worked on or serviced.

Hurly Racing protective radiator covers are designed to shield your customer’s radiators from the debris riders encounter on the track and trail. They come either as a strong fabric mesh for sand and rocks, or in silicone for mud riding.

These are very popular in MXGP, and are especially useful on muddy or sandy tracks. They’re also popular with Enduro riders who are always searching for ways to keep their motorcycles running cooler for longer. These radiator protectors are offered in two models, the sand model and the mud model, which is made of silicone. Hurly Racing protective radiator covers are mounted in front of the radiators where the most protection is needed. The sturdy mesh fabric does not reduce the air permeability, but filters dirt effectively and allows the radiators to continue doing their job of cooling the engine.

Hurly Racing’s mats absorb oil, coolant, and dust from machines as they are being worked on or serviced. They’re also great for catching washers, nuts, and bolts.

The covers are simply hung in front of the radiator by means of the attached elastic bands. Due to the loosely suspended fabric and the “knocking effect” caused by the machine’s vibration and movements, a partial automatic self-cleaning of the nets takes place while riding. This means that the mud or sand that can often cake up and clog your customer’s radiators is easily shaken off or knocked off, thus allowing the radiator to function better and the motorcycle to keep running cooler.

They’re also great for catching washers, nuts, and bolts that sometimes fall during work and easily get lost. Hurly Racing mats are easy to clean, with a rubbery bottom which helps make them anti-slip and UV resistant. Your customers who like to work on their own motorcycle will appreciate the added convenience a Hurly Racing mat offers in the garage or at the track. ■
