appy New Year! How time flies. As we begin 2019, it seems like just yesterday that we were putting together our first issue of the new Parts Europe Magazine. Now here we are beginning our 10th year. Despite some in the industry who wondered a decade ago if there was room in the market for a new motorcycle aftermarket distributor, Parts Europe founder Fred Fox did not waver from his belief

out the story starting on page 16 about Parts Europe’s recent show activities, including EICMA and a great photograph of the whole team.

that there was. Today, no motorcycle distributing company in the world has better stocking and shipping capability than the Parts Europe warehouse and in their ten years have created a world class sales team.

from the FatBook by Nick Trask and his crew at Trask Performance.

Parts Europe’s Sales Manager Xavier Williart continues to build up the strength and effectiveness of the company’s presence in the marketplace, as was seen at the recent EICMA trade and consumer fair in Milan, Italy. Parts Europe’s theme for EICMA this year was “Bigger is Better,” playing off the biggest-ever 615qm display. Be sure to check

Previous readers of this publication know that in each issue of the magazine we feature one of LeMans Corporation’s top brands, and in this issue, its Drag Specialties. Please take a few minutes to read the behind the scenes story about the customized Hot-Rod Fat Bob built

There are many other great products featured in this issue, as always, plus a preview of the 2019 MotoGP racing season that starts soon. ■

NEWS EVENTS 72nd Motocross of Nations WEEKEND CALLED AN INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS Photos by Bavo Swijgers and Steve Weir as noted

W

hen the 72nd running of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations rolled into the legendary RedBud track in Buchanan, MI, in the USA, Parts Europe, Parts Unlimited and parent company LeMans Corporation rolled out the red carpet for the famous race.

Parts Europe, Parts Unlimited and brands such as Alpinestars, Moose Racing, and THOR were front and center the weekend in October as sponsors when an estimated 81,000 fans braved the rain and mud to watch the best motocross riders in the world compete for the storied Chamberlin Trophy.

At the 2018 Motocross of Nations, Parts Europe and Parts Canada dealers joined Part Unlimited dealers at the Parts VIP area to show a global presence. Bavo Swijgers photo

When the final checkered flag came down, Team France – featuring THOR rider Dylan Ferrandis – took first place, followed by Team Italy and Team Netherlands up on the podium. “We had a packed house and the dealers really enjoyed themselves,” said Steve Weir, Parts Unlimited national sales manager, USA. “It was inspiring to see the best riders from around the world all competing.” Not only did the event feature the best international riders, it also attracted Parts Europe dealers and Parts Canada dealers, who joined their Parts Unlimited compatriots at the packed hospitality area hosted by LeMans. According to Weir, the section was the hot ticket for the weekend, with many non-dealers wondering how they could get in.

The VIP area focused around THOR’s hospitality truck and featured a huge viewing area that offered dealers a complete 360-degree unobstructed view of the track. Two other Parts Unlimited big rigs were also used as the Alpinestars international hospitality area, and for the Youthstream and FIM personnel working onsite, reported Hylton Beattie, Parts Unlimited’s global motorsports director. Beattie said that the Motocross of Nations at RedBud was one of the biggest events that Parts has ever been involved with on an international level and that the company’s events team really did a fantastic job.

THOR’s Desalle Secures Third in 2018 MXGP Championship

T

he 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship series was a lesson in perseverance. Stretching out over eight months, 21 races, and trips around the world, the series featured some of the most talented motocross riders in the world, all of them competing for the glory of being Number 1.

From round one back in March in Argentina all the way through the 20th and final round in Italy at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, those riders competed against each other – and themselves – in a numbers game of racking up podiums, wins and points. Throughout it all, the riders went all out to get across that finish line first. In 2018, we got to see one of the most consistent riders in the series – THOR/Monster Energy/Kawasaki’s Clement Desalle – methodically pick away at the points game by regularly placing on the podium, once even earning a first-place overall victory at the MXGP of Russia in Orlyonok. When all was said and done, and the last checkered flag dropped at Imola back in September, Desalle secured himself an overall third place finish, taking home a bronze medal to his native Belgium. “I’m happy with the season; nine podiums, no injuries and a medal placing in the final standings are a good result and I’m sure we can do even better,” said Desalle after the final race of the series.

Newcomer to the MXGP class, THOR/Kawasaki Race Team rider Julien Lieber moved up following a successful MX2 career. Lieber returns for the 2019 series as a teammate to Clement Desalle, and what many observers are calling a promising looking season. CDS photos

THOR/Kawasaki teammate Julien Lieber put in a steady performance throughout the season, carefully lining up points for the final standings. A solid showing at Imola – he went 5-4 in motos one and two – helped the MXGP rookie secure a slot just outside the top 10 lineup. Those who watched his riding across the season are predicting that his consistency and dedication show a promise of things to come when he returns in 2019 alongside Desalle on the THOR/Monster Energy/Kawasaki Race Team. ■

EICMA 2018 – Bigger is Better

W

hen the team at Parts Europe started planning its presence at the 2018 EICMA show, there was one phrase driving its efforts – Bigger is Better.

Fresh off its trip to the Intermot show in Cologne, Parts Europe charged into Milan with plans to build its biggest display booth in the company’s history. The results were stunning. Inside that space – 615qm altogether – there was enough space to create separate sections for different market segments – V-twin, Off-road, ATV/UTV, Street, and Workshop. There was also plenty of room for big displays from house brands Icon, Moose Racing and THOR. Also housed with that massive space were displays from a list of co-exhibitors that included: AFX Helmets, Alpinestars, Biltwell, FMF Racing, Hurly, ITP Tires and Wheels, J.W. Speaker, Michelin, Motion Pro, NEKEN, ODI Grips, Rinehart Racing, S&S Cycle, and TechnoResearch. With a lineup like that, you need a big roster of people on hand to take care of things. That’s why Parts Europe also had a host of sales reps and vendor product specialists on-hand to provide detailed information to the tens of thousands of visitors who came through the popular show.

20

PARTS EUROPE MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2019

Known as the preeminent motorcycle show in Europe, EICMA 2018 saw a 24 percent uptick in ticket sales over the 2017 event. Those showgoers had a chance to check out the new products and vehicles from 1,278 brands spread throughout six pavilions. With numbers like that, it’s no wonder why Parts Europe considers this such an important fair to attend. Parts Europe Magazine had the chance to talk with Parts Europe sales manager Xavier Williart about the show and its importance.

Parts Europe Magazine: Why did Parts Europe increase the size of its presence at the EICMA show? Xavier Williart: For us there is no discussion – EICMA is the most important fair for us. Here we got the chance to show the products of our growing portfolio, meet the people of the powersport business, strengthen our strong international network and give our dealers the best possible service. To make it obvious that we are offering nearly all products to cover the needs of our dealers in all powersport segments, we divided the booth in different zones and created a matching environment for V-Twin, Street, Off-road, ATV/UTV and Workshops.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

We received a lot of very positive comments about this. Integrating product specialists as co-exhibitors in this environment created areas where visitors, the Parts Europe sales team and product specialists from our vendors could have a good exchange.

We’ve heard many positive comments about the design, size and concept of the Parts Europe booth. How did you get the word out to dealers? We did a lot to catch the attention of our dealers and convince them to visit us. A few months before the fairs started, we sent invitations offering special services like helping them find accommodations, which is difficult in a city during a fair. We kept the interest high by announcing news and offering the chance to talk to product specialists and get first-hand information. It worked perfectly – we had 30 percent more dealer visits compared to the EICMA show in 2017. We are proud and glad that so many dealers followed our invitation.

The EICMA show is a major attraction for dealers and enthusiasts from around the world, and the 2018 show was no exception. A crowd gathers before the doors open.

Custom show bikes are very popular at EICMA. Who is responsible for those at the Parts Europe booth? This is a result of the very close collaboration between the Italian sales team and our dealers. It’s much easier to sell exhaust systems, handlebars, headlights and other parts when they’re mounted on an eye-catching custom, rather than when they’re wrapped in plastic or in a box sitting on a shelf. This time we had a lot of fantastic bike builds, especially in the V-twin section, but also in the Off-road area. One other highlight was the Dakar race bike of the official THOR rider, Adrien van Beveren. The Michelin Raffle Bike we had in the booth also attracted a lot of attention. It was equipped with many of the high-quality parts from well-known brands that Parts Europe carries.

Sandro Scaccia (center in white shirt) from TechnoResearch explains to the team from Harley-Davidson Aargau the benefits of the company’s diagnostic solutions.

What was the reaction of the public visitors? Italy is a motorcycle country. Most of the visitors are really curious to see all the new products and new designs, especially the new THOR collection 2019. The signed jerseys of the racers attracted a lot of off-road enthusiasts. The Moose Racing collection with the new F.I. Session helmet with the MIPS (brain protection) technology was an eye catcher, as were Icon’s latest Airframe helmets and accessories. And, as mentioned, the show bikes worked perfectly as magnets. Some of the enthusiasts took some pictures of the details, and picked up our prepared part lists showing everything used in the builds.

Lance Ohrazda from MIPS AB, the company behind the Multi-directional Impact Protection System, explained the function of the technology that is used in the new THOR and Moose Racing helmets.

NEWS EVENTS What are you expecting for the coming 10th anniversary year? Parts Europe has worked continuously trying different approaches to expand its network, and it continues to grow and the market is responding. We will add more brands and products to fulfill the needs of our customers. We also continue to adjust our service to support our dealers with the best service, and are always hiring highly motivated people to get the work done. Ten years in this business is quite a long time. We appreciate that more and more dealers are attracted to the benefits of working with Parts Europe. We have changed a lot to help dealers make their lives easier, and to be more successful by adding services like our Saturday Order, Deliver Monday Service.

The Workshop Area featured examples of the tools, equipment and maintenance products that Parts Europe carries.

We also have our experienced sales team helping dealers find the right products for street, V-twin, Off-road, and ATV/UTV in their native languages. There is still so much potential. We want to reach more dealers and invite them to work with Parts Europe. Everybody is invited to get in touch with us, and we attend a lot of events where new dealers can meet us in person. We will definitely be at the next EICMA show.

So, was it “Bigger is Better” at EICMA in 2018?

Dakkar and THOR rider Adrien van Beveren’s race bike was a big draw for showgoers.

Everybody who entered the booth was impressed by the size, and this was not just the show visitors. There has also been a very positive effect on the complete Parts Europe team. Everybody was proud to be part of this company and it helped to intensify the existing good team spirit. Immediately after the EICMA show we realized that this also had a positive influence on our business. I like to say thank you to all the team members that made this big event successful. We definitely will continue with that strategy. From left: Events and rider rep Glen Dempsey, THOR rider Adrien van Beveren, Xavier Williart, sales manager Europe, and Thomas Cabon, THOR product specialist, gather for a chat during the show.

FATBOOK COVER BIKE

CO V E R

S TO R Y

Sleek, simple and clean – it’s the time-honored prescription for a hot-rod Harley and it sure works on the 2019 FatBook cover bike.

Ness Oval Micro mirrors and a Custom Dynamics Probeam LED headlight found their way up front on this one.

H

ave a look at the 2019 FatBook cover bike, a new-generation Softail that’s been made over by Nick Trask of Trask Performance – it’s going to get plenty of attention.

Not that the new model FXFBS Fat Bob is likely to go unnoticed wherever it goes. With big-inch Milwaukee-Eight power, a newly designed frame that’s both lighter and stiffer, triple-disc braking and an all-around tough guy attitude, Harley-Davidson is calling this one its purest, best performing hot rod ever. Hard to disagree with that, but as everyone knows, no matter how good any factory Harley is when it rolls off the production line, it can only get better with some time, some planning and the FatBook. Trask and his crew in Phoenix, Arizona, USA put these words into action when it got to work on the bike gracing the cover of the newest edition of Drag Specialties’ parts catalog. First, a word about the new color, arguably the first thing that’s going to catch everyone’s eye. “The last thing we wanted was another black Harley-Davidson blending into the background,” Trask explains. There’s little chance of that happening here. This 2018 FXFBS is a stunner, its bright and vibrant PPG yellow making darn sure of that. However, before any of that paint went on, Trask and the guys had a real go at this Fat Bob front to back, and they found everything needed to turn this Harley into something special right inside the FatBook.

THE 2019

Working with bolt-ons, the FatBook, and paint the Trask Performance Team took a box-stock Softail and turned it into a cover bike standout.

Lots of changes here starting with the Ness Procross rims and rotors. The seat is a Drag Specialties Double Diamond with custom stitching, the air cleaner is one of Trask’s see-through Assault Charge setups.

While Trask Performance customs are all knockouts, wild one-off builds going all the way back to the first Assault Series builds, this assignment would be limited to readily available bolt-on parts, as well as the Trask team’s discerning eye and attention to detail. With the exception of a custommade side cover from Trask, that’s exactly what happened. In short order the Fat Bob took on a whole new personality. A factory-stock Fat Bob still comes with a somewhat cluttered look. “Just cleaning that up made a huge difference,” Trask says. One of the first areas addressed was the factory exhaust. The stock Harley system with its bronze-tinted pipes and twin oversize mufflers is huge – it visually dominates the whole right side of the motorcycle. Trask Performance’s *Assault 2-into-1 stainless-steel replacement pipe took care of that in short, upswept order. And this being a Trask project, performance needed an upgrade so the engine got even more oomph with a full *S&S Cycle

550C cam kit, *Sidewinder valve springs and a free-breathing *Trask Assault Charge air cleaner. Off to a great start, another big change came with a pair of 18 x 5½ Ness Procross wheels, the matching Procross Jaggedstyle front and rear rotors and a set of Pirelli Night Dragon tires, chunky 180/55-18s at both ends. The theme was set. The Build Sheet lists where things went from there but the highlights, literally, begin with the finish chosen for all the small bits that accompany that bright-yellow paint. It’s Cerakote, a gun-maker’s standard and it’s been used here in all the places you’d expect to see a more traditional powder coating. It’s up front on the fork brace, it’s on the air cleaner, on that handlebar and its riser mounts, on the dash panel, the rear fender struts, the foot pegs, controls and more. Everywhere you see that industrial-look gray finish it’s Cerakote, playing perfectly against the bright, brash PPG yellow. Simple, and cool.

The same can be said about all the new lighting, front and rear. Up front it’s a plain, bottom-mount Drag Specialties headlight bucket fit with a Custom Dynamics True Black Probeam LED, a neat combo that replaces the stock, futuristic headlight assembly. All the turn signals are Joker Machine’s Rat series, amber for the front, red on the tail. There’s also a new Drag Specialties Double Diamond seat with custom green stitching. Given the attention to performance from Trask’s team, there was an equal emphasis on handling, with Legend Suspension on board. Up front it’s the AXEO system in the forks, on the rear it’s a full AIR-A replacement. There’s plenty more, like slim foot pegs from THRASHIN Supply, Barnett’ clear derby cover, stainless steel fastener kits from Feuling, and Ken’s Factory’s super detailed rocker box and cam covers. ■

2019 MotoGP SEASON PREVIEW STAR-STUDDED FIELD WILL TRY TO STOP MARQUEZ DOMINANCE

et ready! On the 10th of March, the pre-season testing will be over and the 2019 MotoGP world championship will be off and running. The Grand Prix of Qatar—the first of 19 Grand Prix races—will run at the Losail International Circuit. It is the only event of the year held at night. This year’s MotoGP series will feature a talented field with half of the 22 riders having already achieved at least one world championship in their careers at either the 125/Moto3, Moto2 or MotoGP level. Some have been a world champion more than once, including defending champion Marc Marquez (7) as well as leading challengers Valentino Rossi (9) and Jorge Lorenzo (5).

This year will be the first since 2000 that MotoGP Legend Dani Pedrosa will not be in Grand Prix racing. The popular rider from Spain announced in 2018 that he would end his racing career at the end of the season and he was quickly hired for testing and development duties with KTM’s MotoGP program. Pedrosa was sponsored by Parts Europe for many years. Taking Dani’s seat on the Repsol Honda team is fellow Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo, whose career begins anew with Honda. Lorenzo’s conversion from Yamaha to Ducati in 2017 seemed a big mistake for both himself and the manufacturer as they struggled badly for a year and a half. Then last summer, just as he and Ducati were

From left: The top three in the 2018 MotoGP world championship, Marc Marquez, Andrea Dovizioso and Valentino Rossi. Marquez won 9 of the 19 races for the season and Dovizioso won 4. Rossi went winless, but scored points consistently to finish third on the season.

After a year and a half of racing for Ducati with virtually nothing to show for it, Jorge Lorenzo broke through with a victory at the 2018 Italian Grand Prix at Mugello. In a strange twist of fate, the following week Honda decided to conclude Dani Pedrosa’s contract and snapped Lorenzo up to take his place in 2019. Lorenzo finished out his Ducati obligations, scoring two more victories before injuries caused him to miss some races.

The 2019 season will begin soon under the lights of the Losail International Circuit in Qatar. Seen here is the 2018 race with Marc Marquez leading Andrea Dovizioso (04), Valentino Rossi (46), Cal Crutchlow (35) and Danilo Petrucci. Dovi went on the win.

Maverick Viñales is another rider who struggled with the setup of his race bike in 2018, and, like Lorenzo, finally got things sorted out late in the season. He scored a victory in race 17 of the 19-race season and ended up 4th in the world points.

equal Honda equipment with Marquez. His job will not be easy, however, as Marquez left his competitors in the dust in 2018, winning the title by 76 points.

Equally shocking, though, came the announcement just days later that he would instead jump to Honda in 2019 to fill the opening by the departure of Dani Pedrosa. Jorge was suddenly back in the game, scoring two more wins as he finished out his contract on the Ducati. He might have won more, but he suffered injuries late in the season, inculding a high-speed crash caused by an unexplained mechanical malfunction.

Others will surely have their say in the matter too, including Valentino Rossi, Andrea Dovizioso, Danilo Petrucci, Maverick Vinales, Cal Crutchlow, Alex Rins and others. These include some new stars coming up from the Moto2 class: Francesco Bagnaia, Miguel Oliveira, Fabio Quartararo and Joan Mir.

THOR’s Pack jacket, Rain jacket and windbreakers are a few more favorites worth a rider’s look. The Pack Jacket also rolls up into a belted pouch for storage while riding and its waterproof shell has taped seams.

We’re talking jackets, hats, hoodies, sweatshirts and windbreakers, the casual wear that your customers want when they’re not riding. THOR knows this, that’s why the company has an extensive lineup of such products to compliment its popular racewear. This is gear that features plenty of that well-known THOR style.

The Rain jacket is crafted with100 percent translucent PVC, and is another welcome addition when the need arises. It features raglan sleeves and underarm mesh panels, exhaust vents that allow hot air to escape. The comfortable jacket also has elastic bindings at the collar, cuffs and waist.

A good multi-use lightweight jacket is always useful, and THOR’s Terrain jacket fits the bill. Designed with all the useful features such as a number of big pockets, the Terrain is styled with a look that’s as at-home off the bike as it is on the track.

The Limiter windbreaker is lightweight and water resistant. The hooded jacket features a fine mesh liner for comfort and comes in camouflage. The traditional Finish Line windbreaker comes with a crossed-flag Hallman Racing logo and a six-snap front closure with antique brass buttons. It also has a drawcord-closure at the bottom, elastic cuffs, and a nylon outer shell that is waterproof coated.

The Terrain is available in black, green camo and a lightgray/black combo. The convertible jacket has zip-off sleeves, and it rolls up and packs into a pouch with a belt. For comfort and breathability there’s a full mesh liner along with intake and exhaust vents. For water resistance there’s taped seams and Hipora coating.

The Prime Ape handlebars from LA Choppers are aggressively styled, but built for great control and comfort, even in all-day riding.

L

A Choppers is showing off its design expertise with two new game-changing products. The Prime Ape handlebars are a new, aggressive style that challenge the traditional ape hanger look, while the Hero Kit is a handlebar wire install kit designed to make handlebar swaps easier than ever.

The LA Choppers Hero Kit made its debut last fall, and it was immediately popular with dealers thanks to a combination of price, ease of use and convenience. The Hero Kit is designed to alleviate the nightmare of running internal wires through a handlebar. The kit comes with a chain, wire sheathing and a clasp.

The Prime Ape handlebars might have an aggressive style, but they are designed for all-day riding. They are easy to install thanks to the precision laser cuts and robotic welds, especially when used in conjunction with the LA Choppers Hero Kit.

The process for running wires is simple. Using the clasp, attach the chain to the wire sheathing. Drop the chain into the cut slot on the new handlebars, and the weight of the chain makes it easy to pull the sheathing through to the other end of the bar. From there, the wires can be fed all the way through the sheathing, which can be pulled to the right length and trimmed where necessary. The Hero Kit is an ideal add-on for any handlebar sale. ■

The bars are on the narrow side for ape hangers, measuring in at just 90cm wide. Height options include 25.5cm, 33cm and 40.5cm, and everything is constructed from 32mm double-walled U.S. steel. The bars are available in a chrome, gloss black or flat black finish.

Tetsugo and team headed to Colorado a couple of weeks before the race to acclimate to the altitude. Going from Tokyo’s low elevation to Colorado Springs’ 1,839m elevation can make a person feel like they’re sleepwalking with bricks tied to their feet. Once in Colorado Springs, the Blue Thunders team found support from a local dealership, Fay Myers Motorcycle World.

The day before the hill climb, Tetsugo acquired oxygenated fuel and slicks, neither of which he previously knew were allowed. He and the team rushed to a local track to make the last-minute changes to the bike and test it out. After hours at the track, the team worked well into the night to dial in the bike. Late that night, they swapped the shredded tires from the track to a fresh set of slicks and with no time left they had no choice but to spent the early morning hours trying to scrub them in with a Scotch-Brite pad. Race day, Tetsugo’s Heavyweight class took off one-by-one at 8 a.m. His goal was to finish in 10 minutes, 30 seconds. Flag drops and he takes off with a fistful of throttle, absolutely charging up the mountain, wrestling the bike around every turn.

After everything was said and done, Tetsugo finished the legendary hill climb 6th in his class with a time of 11:32.

38

With four days of practice riding, there was a lot to learn. Tetsugo was the rookie underdog – it was his first time on the mountain and his first time racing the Z900RS. The early morning practices were very cold and on one of his runs Tetsugo crashed off the side of what was luckily a shallow drop-off. Both bike and rider came away with a few minor scratches.

FEBRUARY 2019

Up in a section that is referred to as the W’s, he low-sided his bike around one of the tighter turns. He was quick to his feet to wrangle the heavy bike upright and get back in the race; the clock was ticking. Despite his effort, he finished 6th with a time of 11:32. Knowledge is power. Tetsugo and team will be back in 2019 to apply all that he and the team had learned to once again challenge the mountain and himself. ■

Adaptive Lighting for Better Visibility J.W. Speaker’s proprietary ComfortLite™ high beam. It is all enclosed in a heavy-duty, die-cast aluminum housing that features plug-and-play installation for a wide number of fitments. The Adaptive 2 Series lights have improved function over the previous generation. Previously, the lamps only had adaptive functionality with the low beam. Now, the adaptive functionality will also operate when the high beam is on. This is called Dual Burn® and is a feature J.W. Speaker has added to most of its headlights.

A graphic demonstration of how the LED light arrays on either side of the Adaptive 2 Series headlight shows how they illuminate when a bike is cornering or going through a turn.

J

.W. Speaker wants riders to master the corners with confidence. The company’s Adaptive 2 Series headlights feature Adaptive technology when using both the high beam and the low beam. These headlights have a ditch-to-ditch light pattern, eliminating dark corners on sharp turns and providing light 450 meters down the road for a more confident ride. The LED headlights are “adaptive” because they know when a rider is leaning or turning and they dynamically adjust the light accordingly. The intelligent design helps to eliminate potentially dangerous blind spots when cornering. The targeted LED beam shines right where a rider needs it to see their way safely through corners. Behind the LEDs are on-board sensors and advanced electronics that calculate lean angles on a real-time basis, automatically directing the lights to coordinate with the path of the motorcycle. Visibility is immediately maximized in key areas of the road that would be left in the dark with standard, non-adaptive headlights. The Adaptive 2 Series LED headlights have an integrated optical system that includes the adaptive low beam and

J.W. Speaker now has new brackets that allow the Adaptive 2 Series headlight to be fitted to Kawasaki and Yamaha motorcycles.

The headlights come in several sizes, including an 18cm (7-inch) round fairing style, a 14.5cm (5¾-inch) round bucket mount, and Road Glide 14.5cm (5¾-inch) dual headlights. They are all ECE compliant for street legal use.

The “adaptive” feature of the Adaptive 2 Series headlights works with both high and low beam functions.

Fitments are now more versatile, too. J.W. Speaker has redesigned the rear castings in a way that will allow the company to add to its growing list of fitments, particularly for metric bike applications. Now, there are also new brackets that allow the Adaptive 2 lights to be fitted to Kawasaki and Yamaha applications. While the Adaptive Series lights are increasing in functionality and fitments, the price has actually dropped. All J.W. Speaker Adaptive Series lights have reduced in price by approximately 20 percent. After three years on the market, J.W. Speaker has seen great success with the lights and a constantly growing number of customers. That growth means that the company has been able to streamline its processes, including manufacturing, engineering and sourcing to achieve economies of scale. The end result is, of course, a better price for customers and an easier sale for dealers. ■

Off-Road Ready

Wheel Components and Bolt Kits

M

oose Racing knows that a lot of off-road riders take a hands-on approach to the building and maintenance of their motorcycles. To get them ready for the next riding season, Moose Racing has all of the components needed for dirtbike wheel assembly as well as specialized bolt kits to make swapping parts easy. Moose Racing’s MX1 hubs are forged from 6061-T6 aluminum and then machined, making them stronger than stock cast or billet hubs. The one-piece hubs are designed to match perfectly with stock or aftermarket sprockets and rotors, meaning no carriers are necessary. The MX1 hubs also work with MX1 and OEM spokes, as well as Moose Racing and OEM rims. Further attention to detail includes larger bearings for improved hub strength and longer life plus a captive wheel spacer for quick changes. Moose Racing offers the MX1 hubs in a lot of off-road motorcycle fitments and plenty of colors, including blue, lake blue, red, black, orange, silver and green. The complementary MX1 stainless steel spokes are available as a set for a complete wheel build or individually.

They are constructed of a tough T302H stainless steel for maximum tensile strength, and the polished finish helps maintain the surface durability. The spokes, which come in lengths of 18-inch, 19-inch and 21-inches, are interchangeable with Moose Racing and stock rims and hubs. The precision threads of the MX1 spokes match perfectly with the MX1 spoke nipples, which are sold in a set of 36 to accommodate an entire wheel. Available in 8-gauge or 9-gauge sizes, the spoke nipples are CNC machined from 7075-T7351 aircraft-quality aluminum before being polished and anodized for a perfect finish. Color options include black, blue, green, gold, lake blue, orange, red, silver and Ti-gray. To cap off a wheel build, Moose Racing also has front and rear rims available to fit most popular models. The rims are designed for use with OEM hubs, spokes and nipples. After the rims are extruded from true 7000-series aluminum, they undergo a three-stage heat treatment to ensure the highest available strength. An anodized finish completes the process, with black, blue, orange and silver colors available.

Moose Racing has all of the components needed for your customers to rebuild their wheels, including the company’s premium MX1 hubs and MX1 spoke nipples.

When it comes to winter rebuilds and mid-season upgrades, having a selection of OE-style bolt, fastener and hardware kits on hand is invaluable. Moose Racing has a number of model-specific kits for a wide range of makes and models.

For Honda 125 to 450 CR/CRF models from 2000 to current, the M1 CR/CRF bolt kit (p/n 2401-1005) has factory-style replacements for easy swapping. Many of the parts in the kit will fit other Honda dirtbikes, too. The comprehensive kit includes rotor bolts, shroud bolts, seat bolts, sub-frame bolts, fork guard bolts, factory hardware, aluminum bushings, aluminum rim-lock spacers, sprocket bolts, Fuji nuts, various washers, valve stem parts, hex-head bolts and more. Kawasaki riders on 2003 to current KX/KXF models will benefit from the M1 KX/KXF bolt kit (p/n 2401-1004). Like the CR/CRF kit, the KX/KXF kit has a lot of parts that will also fit other Kawasaki dirt bikes. At 205 pieces, the KX/ KXF bolt kit is the largest model-specific kit that Moose Racing offers. The array of parts includes factory style hex flange bolts with captured washers, hex head flange bolts, shroud bolts, seat bolts, sub-frame bolts, fork guard bolts, rotor bolts, sprocket bolts, factory hardware, rim lock spacers, valve stem parts, chain guide parts, Fuji lock nuts, various washers and an axle nut. The Suzuki solution from Moose Racing is the M1 RM/ RMZ bolt kit (p/n 2401-1006) for 2000 and newer RM/RMZ 125-450 models. The crossover possibilities include other Suzuki dirtbikes, older models and DRs.

guard bolts, rotor bolts, sprocket bolts, T-nuts, aluminum bushings, rim lock spacers, valve stem parts, Fuji lock nuts, replacement bolts and various washers. Moose Racing developed the versatile M1 YZ/YZF/WR bolt kit (p/n 2401-1003) for 2003-2018 Yamaha YZ/YZF/ WR 125-450 models, but it also crosses over to older Yamaha dirtbike models. The kit is one of the most extensive in Moose Racing’s M1 bolt kit line, with 200 pieces that encompass several hardware pieces, sprocket bolts, rotor bolts, valve stem parts, Fuji lock nuts, replacement bolts, various washers and more. Another extremely versatile kit is the M1 Euro bolt kit (p/n 2401-1007). Moose Racing developed the kit for 125-500 KTM models, but it turns out that the kit is also ideal for many Husqvarna, Husaberg, Beta and GasGas models. The kit is comprised of 170 pieces, including factory style KTM hardware, bolts, aluminum washers and concave washers. The kit also has a collection of dimpled flange bolts, carb screws, body screws, sprocket bolts, clips, valve stem parts and more. ■

Upgrading the Indian Clutch Parts and Cables

Swapping out the OE cables with a set of Barnett’s High Efficiency replacement cables is a cost-effective way for your Indian Motorcycle customers to achieve a noticeable upgraded in clutch operation.

If your Indian Motorcycle riding customers are looking for a serious clutch upgrade, point them to Barnett’s new clutch kits for the full range of those American V-twins.

N

o matter what motorcycle your customers are riding, sooner or later there’s a good chance they’re going to want to upgrade that stock clutch for something smoother, stronger and easier to use.

For clutch swaps, Barnett’s two new clutch kits cover all the 2014 to 2019 Chief, Chieftain, Roadmaster, Springfield and Scout models. These are direct-fit replacements that feature segmented carbon fiber friction plates for the Baggers and Kevlar for the Scout models.

For those customers on bikes from Indian, Barnett has everything needed to upgrade the OE clutch to something that will make the ride a lot more enjoyable.

Both of these friction plates provide a strong grip and improved oil flow for cooler, smoother, more consistent performance and a long life. Each kit comes with a full set of tempered-steel/precision ground drive plates and heat-treated, heavy-duty springs.

For more than 70 years, Barnett clutches and cables have enhanced motorcycle performance for riders on a big range of makes and models. Now the company has offerings for Indian Chiefs, Chieftains, Roadmasters, Springfields, and Scouts. For customers on a budget, but who want relief from clutch headaches like stiff, notchy or sticking cables, there are Barnett High Efficiency replacement cables. These feature a High Efficiency inner wire that is nylon coated, lubed with silicone and runs through a Teflon inner lining. The result is ultra-smooth action, reduced lever effort, a long life and improved aesthetics. All the fittings are chrome plated where applicable and three casing styles are offered – traditional black vinyl, classic stainless braid, and Barnett’s Platinum Series for all models except the Scout.

Top-End Tips

All-in-One Piston Kits

W

hen customers with off-road bikes ask about a replacement piston you know they’re going to need more than just that. Whether it’s a 2-stroke machine or it’s a 4-stroke design, that job is going to also need rings, wrist pins, clips, and all the gaskets, O-rings and seals required to reassemble the engine.

A Vertex Top-End Piston Kit saves time, money and eliminates all the confusion and worry of piecing together everything needed. Vertex has done all the work, so there’s no need for searching through the catalogs to find everything, or problems with mis-matched parts. The 2-stroke kits include the piston, the rings, the wrist pin and bearing and a full top-end gasket set. The 4-stroke kits include all of that along with a new cam chain. The kits cover all the popular applications for a wide range of makes and models. At the center of it all is a genuine Vertex piston, the choice of many riders in MXGP, Supermoto and the Enduro World Championships. Winning performance is built into every piston Vertex makes. They’re all lightweight performers that are ready to boost power and extend longevity. Available both cast or forged depending on the application, Vertex pistons offer a number of features. These include specially treated/high-strength aerospace-quality alloys, profiles inspired by F1, crown shapes that allow maximum compression, as well as specialized molybdenum coatings for superior wear resistance. There are also nitride ring sets and moly-coated anti-rotation external hook clips. Vertex cast pistons are an ideal choice for a modern fuel-injected 2-stroke engine. Low-weight and high-strength, only quality metals are used – high grade alloys that are T5 or T6 heat treated. Each piston is finish-machined to precisely control its shape, size and alignment for consistency and performance. All this is the result of years spent in close collaboration with major tuners, combined with Vertex’s own engineering expertise.

Vertex Pistons now has all-in-one piston replacement kits for both 2-stroke, and 4-stroke applications. The lineup covers a wide range of makes and models.

Recommending a Vertex piston to any rider in need of a replacement is easy, and the company makes it easier with the Vertex Top-End Piston Kits. ■

To make that piston-replacement job easier, Vertex Pistons offers its Top-End Piston Kit. For just one part number, the kits feature everything needed to get the job done on 2-stroke and 4-stroke motorcycles.

For When it’s Time to Ride

our customer has arrived at an event. His motorcycle is offloaded from the trailer. Now it’s time for a final check to be sure that the bike will be ready to ride, but there’s a problem – the battery is dead! Any number of things could have drained that battery during the trip – the alarm tripped en route or the key left in accessory position – but the results are the same. No battery. No starting. No riding. The race is on to charge the battery before the ride starts. This is a common scenario, and OptiMate is here with a solution. Introducing the Drag Specialties/OptiMate 5 Power Charger (p/n 3807-0475.) With 4 Amps charging power on tap, it’s guaranteed to have that battery up and ready to start a bike in just a few short hours. A handlebar hanging hook places the Drag Specialties OptiMate 5 at an easy viewing level off the floor, with the charge status lights in full view. The Charge/Wait light stays lit while it brings the battery to 60 percent, enough to fire up the engine. That moment of truth is confirmed by the Go Ride!/Optimize light. The ride is on!

The new Drag Specialties/OptiMate 5 Power Charger allows your customers to quickly charge dead batteries enough to start a motorcycle or other powersports vehicle.

If the battery remains connected the charge program continues until the 24-7 Maintain lights comes on. This is perfect for storage charging, from overnight to months, keeping that battery at 100 percent, safely and without ever overcharging.

It was there company founders George J. Smith and Stanley Stankos built the company’s reputation behind record-breaking runs that quickly established S&S Cycle’s commitment to speed. In the 61 years since, nothing has changed. Coaxing horsepower and torque out of V-twin engines is still the company’s focus, and you can find its motto “Proven Performance” on a wide range of products within the FatBook. Open up that latest 2019 version, and you’ll see that familiar S&S oval on a pair of Euro 4 homologated exhausts built exclusively for Milwaukee-Eight powered Softail applications. New to Parts Europe are S&S Cycle’s Slash Cut and Grand National slip-on exhausts that are E-marked for road use. You see, in addition to continuing its pursuit of speed through an ever-expanding array of parts, S&S Cycle also built its own in-house emissions lab in Viola, Wisconsin, USA. The lab is certified to do emissions testing not only to strict American emissions standards, but also to tighter European Union rules. This is good news for your customers on those newgeneration Fat Boy, Breakout, Slim, Fat Bob, Street Bob, Low Rider, Heritage, and Deluxe Softail for 2018 and 2019 models. The Slash Cut slip-ons offer those bikes an upgrade in both performance and classic styling. Slash cut style mufflers are a longtime favorite among horsepower junkies for their sound as well as looks and these pipes certainly fit the bill. They are available in black ceramic or chrome to best match your customer’s bike.

The Grand National slip-on mufflers in black cut a sleek profile on a number of Harley-Davidson Softail models. They also provide that trademark S&S power and sound.

That other great e-marked option are S&S Cycle’s Grand National slip-ons. These feature race-inspired end caps and long, sleek and classic profile. Finishes include black ceramic and chrome as well. No matter which S&S slip-on your customers choose you can reassure them they’re getting the real deal when it comes to performance. Given their pedigree, you know that they mean business when that throttle gets twisted. ■

Off-Road Ready

Wheels and Trunks for the Trail

F

rom wheels that can tackle difficult terrain to storage trunks that ensure your gear makes it safely to its destination, Moose Utility Division is ready to prepare off-road riders for the new season.

The 399X wheel for ATV and UTV applications is designed for wherever the trail goes, whether it’s through the woods, deep mud or sand. The 399X has front sizes of 12x7 and 14x7 inches, while rear wheel options include 12x8 and 14x8 inches. The front wheels can handle load capacities starting at 675 lbs., while the rear wheels start at a capacity of 1150lbs.

Like all Moose Utility Division wheels, each 399X is Xrayed on the production line for a thorough inspection, ensuring quality and reliability. They are available in gloss black with chrome center caps and black rivets. (While the logo-stamped center caps come with the wheel, dealers should note that the lug nuts must be ordered separately.)

The 399X wheel for ATV and UTV applications is designed for wherever the trail goes, whether it’s through the woods, deep mud or sand.

Moose Utility Division also has a wide range of hard trunks for ATVs. The helmet storage rear trunk is just the right size to accommodate two helmets or other large items, with a storage capacity of nearly 99.1 liters. The trunk also doubles as a seat, with a comfortable backrest and seat cushion. Two quick-access drink holders – one on each side of the seat – add to the amenities. Two draw-tight latches secure the lid, and the storage spaces are weather-resistant. Everything mounts directly to tubular and composite racks using four U-bolts and sealing washers. The helmet storage rear trunk measures 94cm W x 63.5cm D x 43cm H.

Two-tier storage trunk.

Riders who want to bring along food or drinks can opt for Moose Utility Division’s rear trunk with cooler. A convenient rear cooler compartment measures 33cm W x 10cm D x 16.5cm H. There is also an additional 70.8 liters of traditional storage space. The integrated backrest, armrests and seat cushion make things comfortable. Like the helmet trunk, the cooler trunk mounts easily to most tubular or composite racks. The entire unit measures 101cm W x 71cm D x 43cm H.

Riders who like to stay extremely organized will appreciate the two-tier rear storage trunk. The top level is ideal for storing smaller items like tools, while the bottom level will accommodate larger gear. The trunk comes with two latches, both of which are compatible with a padlock for added security. The double-wall lids provide maximum rigidity, while the single-wall body provides maximum storage capacity. The two-tier rear storage trunk measures 94cm W x 42.5cm D x 42.5cm H. ■

More Mods for the Milwaukee-Eight

F

euling Parts has a hot new cam for the Milwaukee-Eight, as well as a complete Oiling System Pack designed to address lubrication issues on the stock water-cooled version of that multi-valve V-twin. Feuling has been all over the Milwaukee-Eight from the start. The company designed its own eight-valver a few years back so when Harley-Davidson introduced its version, Feuling was more than ready with products like the new Reaper 521 cam.

521 Reaper cam

PARTS & ACCESSORIES

Cammed Up, Oiled Down

With an aggressive sound and extrastrong pulling power, the Reaper 521 has a range of 2,250 rpm to 6,250 rpm. While it works great in stock-displacement engines, it really shines in big-bores with added compression. Although high-lift valve springs are required when using the cam, ported heads and larger throttle bodies are not. Of course, upgrading to both would further complement the benefits of installing the cam. Feuling has complete kits for the new cam, kits that include the camshaft and everything needed for an easy installation.

Water-cooled camchest kit

The new Oiling System Pack for the water-cooled Milwaukee-Eight is available in HP+ or Race Series configurations. The HP+ uses a 6061 aluminum high-volume oil pump, while the Race Series setup uses a 7075 aluminum pump that is 50 percent harder and stronger than OE. Both feature larger gears and properly sized passages, pressure relief valve seats and seals. The pumps greatly increase oil pressure, volume and scavenging, all issues with an OE Milwaukee-Eight. This new pump is designed especially for the water-cooled engine, and delivers 30 percent more pressure and volume over stock, with a 53 percent increase in scavenge volume. Combined with the kit’s HighFlow Cam Plate, oil flow in and out of the engine is significantly increased. All of this leads to quieter and smoother engine operation, increased oil pressure and flow, an increase in scavenge volume, and 68 percent more oil volume to the crank and rod bearing.

Water-cooled oiling system

The results are cooler engine and oil temperatures and the virtual elimination of wet sumping, blow by and oily air cleaners. Kits include the oil pumps, cam plates, lifters, cam bearings and full installation hardware. ■

Both sizes are made from a heavy-duty, lightweight diecast aluminum, which comes in a chrome or True Black finish with a polycarbonate lens. Inside, the low beam consists of three high-power advanced optical D lenses and a daytime running lamp (DRL). When the high beam is engaged, the low beam stays on, but two additional advanced optical D lenses with three projector lenses are added to it. The result is a wide optical pattern that produces ideal illumination down the road as well as on either side. As part of that commitment, Custom Dynamics offers a generous warranty for its products. All of the LEDs have a lifetime warranty, and the electrical modules have a five-year warranty. The way founder Dave Pribula and the team at Custom Dynamics see it, the LEDs should be the last lighting purchase ever made for that part of the motorcycle. P

arts Europe dealers have several new parts and luggage options with the addition of Custom Acces as a vendor. The company might be new to the pages of the Parts Europe catalogs, but it has a long history of building value-packed parts that are high quality and easy to mount. Custom Acces is based in Canovelles, Spain, where a facility of more than 500 square meters meets the demands of customers in over 40 countries. Although the brand is a little less than 15 years old, the origins of Custom Acces go back much further. The company was created by Motoplastic-Puig to specialize in parts that cater to the custom motorcycle niche. Puig itself dates back to 1964, so Custom Acces uses Puig’s experience of more than half a century to develop each item and to streamline ordering. Custom Acces first entered the Harley-Davidson market a few years ago, but already the company has built a vast array of parts and luggage for Harley models, particularly for the Sportster.

Custom Acces specializes in rigid bags, and Parts Europe carries a variety of them so riders can choose the size and the style that best suits their needs. Both the Silver model and the Touring model rigid saddlebags are made from a bright black ABS plastic with a lockable upper opening. The high-quality finish and precise fit mean that the bags are as good-looking as they are practical. The Silver saddlebags have a carrying capacity of 20 liters for each bag. The Touring saddlebags are ideal for longer journeys, with a capacity of 33 liters for each saddlebag. Rear LED lights are integrated into the design of the Touring model, too.

Custom Acces also has stainless steel parts like engine guards and sissy bars. The engine guards arrive with all of the hardware required for installation as well as easy instructions. Big-Bore Fix Sealing Made Easy

B

olt-on big-bore kits for the Milwaukee-Eight are out there and they’re popular among riders looking to get a performance boost from that newest platform from Harley-Davidson.

Offering the available increase to a whopping 4.250-inch bore, they can take a stock 107-cubic-inch Harley-Davidson out to 124, and bring a 114 or CVO 117 up to an impressive 128 cubic inches.

job back to the true bolt-on it’s meant to be. The no-weld gasket sets are available now and Parts Europe has them. Always looking to improve and upgrade its products, Cometic’s done exactly that here. The originally designed head gaskets for the Milwaukee-Eight 4.250-inch bigbore conversion could only be used if the oil holes in the heads were plugged or welded. For some shops this isn’t practical, and for some customers it could price the job out of reach. Now none of that is a stumbling block. The design engineers at Cometic have come up with a new head-gasket that, while allowing for a 4.250-inch bore, also allows room for a separate embossment to seal the oil holes with no plugging or welding required.

The new Cometic no-weld gaskets make it easier to install a big-bore conversion kit on the oil-cooled Milwaukee-Eight engines. Now there is no need to plug or weld shut the oil ports in the cylinder heads.

Up until now there’s been a caveat attached to going big, at least as it applies to the oil-cooled versions of those Milwaukee-Eights. Going any bigger than a 4.200-inch bore on those engines would require the oil-ports in the cylinder heads to be plugged or welded shut, and the cylinder heads resurfaced. Not a game changer but certainly a consideration, an added step with increased cost. Cometic Gasket has the fix. It’s a newly designed no-weld 4.250-inch head-gasket kit that takes all the added work and cost out of that big-bore conversion and returns the

64

PARTS EUROPE MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2019

The majority of Milwaukee-Eight engines out there are oil cooled, so the new Cometic noweld head gaskets are a huge breakthrough for a lot of riders, making displacements of 124 and 128 cubic inches easily accessible and bolt-on possible.

The multi-valve Milwaukee-Eight has been around for a while now, long enough for many to not only become the recipient of a big-bore kit but also some major service work. Cometic has all the required gaskets and seals for that, too, for both the oil-cooled models and the bikes with radiators. There are rocker-box gaskets, lower-end and camchest gasket-and-seal kits, seals and O-rings for the air/fuel intake systems along with gaskets for the primary, starter and transmission. Cometic Gasket has them all, including those for the 2018/2019 Softails. ■

MOOSE RACING PIPE GUARDS BY E-LINE Moose Racing pipe guards offer the most protection, style, and durability on the market Custom molded to fit perfectly every time Antiballistic composite material, fiberglass, and high temp resins yield an exceptional guard; eight times stronger, 2 times stiffer, yet 1.5 times lighter than aluminum The level of exhaust pipe heat that can be reached by 4-stroke models can cause pipes to ding easily; this heat can also cause damage to expensive riding pants; so eliminate the hassle by installing a Moose Racing Pipe guard Our pipe guards distribute impacts over a large area; aluminum guards cannot duplicate this effect
