Moose from Head to Toe by D on Em de

T

he featured brand in this issue is Moose Racing, the 30+ yearold outfitter and maker of useful accessories for off-road and adventure motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs. The Moose brand was born in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, USA, where spare parts are not always available and the weather can turn brutal on short notice. Riders in the high country know parts have to keep them going on the toughest trails and riding gear has to be versatile in changing weather conditions. In the decade since the opening of the Parts Europe warehouse, riders throughout Europe have been discovering how Moose riding gear and accessories from Moose Utility Division work well where they ride too. In this issue, we continue the ongoing story of the “Head-to-Toe” concept of riding gear from Moose Racing. Note the special focus on the new F.I. Session Helmet, an all-new design that features the

state-of-the-art MIPS Brain Protection System. MIPS BPS technology is designed to help reduce the risk of brain injury by reducing rotational motion to a rider’s head in a crash. Boots, pants, jerseys and more fill out the line, so be sure to check out the story that starts on page 24. As always, the sales team at Parts Europe is constantly traveling to motorcycle events. Read about their many activities throughout Europe, including the legendary expo in Verona, Italy. And MotoGP is on again! As you read this, the motors might still be warm from the opening round of the 2019 championship held under the lights in Qatar. New vendors, new products and more! We hope you enjoy this issue.

taking those seasoned challengers and young upstarts around the world on the points chase, with each round’s results deciding who moves closer to the grand prize. For 2019, the following racers are the THOR and Moose Racing riders to watch in both the premier class MXGP series and in the MX2.

For its twenty-sixth season of competition in the championship, the team retains the same line-up as 2018. Belgian Clement Desalle, who has won at least one GP every year since joining KRT in 2016, will be team leader for the fourth year in a row. Desalle secured the bronze medal in the rider’s championship of the highly competitive MXGP class last season, and

Clement’s fellow countryman Julien Lieber – and fellow THOR rider – will be his teammate for the second consecutive year, and both will campaign the new Kawasaki KX450–SR which they have developed jointly throughout the winter together with team and factory support.

Inspired by the “quality over quantity” adage, the team has transitioned from a three-rider line-up to two where they will concentrate on expectation-breaking momentum they built up in 2018.

Watson Dominates in France MOOSE RACING/YAMAHA RIDER WINS

onster Energy Kemea Yamaha/Moose Racing rider Ben Watson dominated the last pre-season international race at Lacapelle Marival in France. The Brit won both motos at the race in late February and gave the Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha MX2 Team its second victory of the season. Jago Geerts, who won in Hawkstone Park, finished fifth overall. The Kemea Yamaha-boys seemed to be ready for the start of the FIM world championship in Argentina. Watson got a great start in the first moto, but made a small mistake in the first lap and dropped to third place. He regrouped quickly, took the lead after ten minutes and kept a good rhythm till the end. Watson got another good start on his YZ250F in the second moto and took the lead pretty quickly. “Finally, today I could ride to my real potential. This is a mental boost,” said Watson. “I’m looking forward to Argentina, to the start of the world championship. My goal? Simple: try to do better than last year, when I finished fourth.” ■

HEAD-TO-TOE

M

oose Racing’s goal is to equip off-road riders for anything the track or trail might throw at them. That means offering everything a rider needs from head to toe, and from what everyone sees to what’s underneath it all.

The latest lineup of Moose Racing off-road gear includes updated essentials, like the latest iteration of the M1 boots, as well as groundbreaking pieces designed from scratch with the latest technology, like the F.I. Session helmet.

The F.I. Session helmet features the MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System) MIPS Brain Protection System (BPS), technology designed to help reduce rotational brain injuries in the case of a crash.

F.I. SESSION HELMET: TECHNOLOGY MEETS COMFORT Moose Racing has offered a helmet in the past, but it was an open-mold shell, meaning that it had not been designed in-house. While that helmet certainly filled a need, Moose Racing’s development team decided to come up with a helmet that was not only designed in-house, but incorporated the latest technology in helmet liners. The resulting F.I. Session Helmet is one of the most advanced products offered by Moose Racing. The Moose Racing development team started by creating a 3D model of the shell. The large eye port was carefully created so that it would look modern while also providing an excellent field of vision. Its design also ensures that it will work with any type of goggle. The 3D model eventually turned into an injection-molded polycarbonate shell that is lightweight, compact and strong – all of the things an off-road rider is looking for in a helmet. There are two shell sizes and two EPS sizes, all engineered to provide an optimal fit.

24

PARTS EUROPE MAGAZINE

APRIL 2019

Intake and exhaust ports were also carefully designed, as the developers worked to create optimal airflow to keep riders cool. The F.I. Session helmet boasts nine intake and three exhaust vents, all connected via internal air channels. Of course, one of the main draws of the F.I. Session helmet is inside. Moose Racing wanted to incorporate state-of-the-art protection, so the company partnered with MIPS (MultiDirectional Impact Protection System) to utilize the MIPS Brain Protection System (BPS). MIPS is a Swedish company that has developed the BPS for helmet applications across a wide range of sports and activities. The BPS features a low-friction layer that is found between the shell and the multi-density EPS liner of the helmet. If a rider goes down and the helmet hits the ground at an angle, the low-friction layer allows a slight sliding motion in all directions. According to the company, this sliding reduces the rotational motion that is transmitted to the brain during impact. In short, MIPS BPS technology is designed to help reduce rotational motion to a rider’s head by absorbing the energy

itself, thereby reducing the risk of brain injury. Check out the 2019 Helmet & Apparel catalog for a full description and diagrams that help explain how MIPS works. The company notes that the multi-density EPS liner further adds to the impact absorption capabilities of the helmet, adding another layer of guard between the ground and a rider’s head. Comfort features of the F.I. Sessions helmet include a nose guard that provides plenty of coverage from roost. It can be removed easily, too, so riders can make their own choice on whether they want it. Riders can also choose their preferred visor angle – the unique friction hinge visor is easy to adjust, but stays securely in place while on the go. Inside the helmet, the liner and cheek pads are made of a moisture-wicking material to keep a rider cool and dry, and they can be removed for easy washing and drying. The M1.3 boots have reinforced TPU shin, ankle and foot plates on the outside and a rigid steel shank on the inside to provide additional protection and stability.

The design and features of the F.I. Sessions helmet have garnered it both ECE and DOT certification. The helmet is available in sizes XS to 3X, and it comes in black/white, black/hi-viz, black/blue and red/white color schemes. Replacement visors are available, too.

M1.3 BOOTS: IMPROVING ON A PROVEN BOOT Moose Racing can’t claim to outfit off-road riders from head to toe without a solid boot option, and the CE-certified M1.3 boot is it. While the new boot might look similar to the previous M1.2, the Moose Racing design team made numerous changes to provide better mobility, reduced break-in time and improved support. A new internal speed lace system not only makes ingress and egress quick and easy, but it also provides additional ankle support and reduces side-to-side flex while riding. Externally, the buckle system has been updated with new aluminum latches for stronger and more secure closure. F.I. Session helmet

Moose Racing also designed new flex zones that shorten break-in time and keep movement from being stiff. The lower toe box got a redesign, too, and it now has improved brake feel and enhanced shifting capabilities compared to the M1.2 boots. The M1.3 boots have reinforced TPU shin, ankle and foot plates on the outside and a rigid steel shank on the inside to provide additional protection and stability.

XCR GOGGLES: GET A BETTER VIEW Like the F.I. Session helmet, the XCR goggles were designed from the ground up by Moose Racing’s development team. The articulating outriggers fit inside the eye port of a helmet while providing some flex so that the goggles can conform to a rider’s face. Moose Racing also added a triple layer of foam, which serves a triple purpose – it adds comfort, wicks moisture and helps prevent dust and dirt from getting inside. A tacky silicone backing on the elastic strap helps keep the XCR goggles in place. The result of those features is a goggle that fits firmly and effectively without being too tight. The large eye port is fitted with a CE-certified polycarbonate lens. It is optically pure and coated with a durable scratch and anti-fog finish. Standard and laminated tear-offs are available separately, too. All of the features combine to offer maximum visibility. Ventilation on the frame lets hot air out of the XCR goggles, further reducing fogging, while an integrated, removable nose guard keeps dirt from getting in. Moose Racing offers the XCR goggles in eight colorways, including four options each in the Hatch and Camo designs. There are ten additional lens color offerings, as well as replacement nose guards. Moose Racing’s new M1.3 boot is an upgrade on the previous M1.2. The new design features better mobility, reduced break-in time and improved support.

The chassis is constructed with polyurethane-coated synthetic leather that is both abrasion resistant and flexible. On the inner calf, a heavyweight suede leather guard improves abrasion and heat resistance. The bottom of the M1.3 is made of a multi-layer synthetic rubber outsole for durability and superior grip. Inside the M1.3 boots, the updated lining wicks moisture away from a rider’s foot while soft EVA foam reinforces impact areas and provides cushioning. Moose Racing designed the M1.3 boots for the whole family, with adult sizing from 7-15, youth sizing from 1-7 and children’s sizing from 10-13. There are five colorways for adults, three for youth and two for children. Available replacement parts for the M1.3 boots include strap and buckle kits, buckle bases and toe caps.

XC1 BODY ARMOR: A PEEK UNDERNEATH Moose Racing designed the XC1 body armor shirt to be comfortable, breathable, affordable and versatile. Because the shirt goes underneath a rider’s regular gear, the XC1 body armor can be used for all types of motorcycle riding, both off-road and on.

XC1 Body Armor

The XC1 body armor is constructed of a four-way stretch open-mesh material that is lightweight and helps keep a rider dry and cool. Flat-stitched seams and stretch cuffs add to the comfort level while reducing bulk. There is CE-certified armor in the elbows, shoulders, front chest and back. The armor is constructed of a material similar to memory foam, so it conforms to a rider’s body and does not slide around while riding. The armor can be easily removed via external pocket openings so the shirt can be washed. A full-length zipper makes it easy to put the XC1 body armor on, and the stretch material combined with a 3D spacer mesh panel at the interior elbow increase comfort and ease of movement. The XC1 body armor comes in three sizes – SM/MD, LG/XL and 2X/3X – and Moose Racing recommends encouraging customers to try it on to see just how lightweight and comfortable it is. ■

Upgrading Comfort and Convenience

hen it comes to making the cab more comfortable, Moose Utility Division wants to give UTV owners plenty of options. Items like a roof, doors and a windshield can make a big difference in a UTV’s style, comfort and convenience. Moose Utility Division has hard and soft tops for a range of UTV applications, but parts like the Universal 2-piece roof will work with a number of different brands and models. The hard top is molded from a durable polyethylene with UV stabilizers so it will stand up to harsh sunlight. Water run-off areas are part of the design for rainy days, and a molded cargo tray adds some bonus storage space. The roof measures in at 152 cm x 110 cm x 14 cm. For UTV owners who prefer a fabric roof cap, Moose Utility Division also offers various fitments of black vinyl roof caps. The soft tops are lightweight and easy to store, but they still provide excellent shelter in snow or rainy weather.

Mounting systems like adhesivebacked hook-and-loop closures and buckled straps make it easy to attach the caps to the roll cage. Some applications include rear panels for extra protection from the elements. Polaris Ranger customers who want doors to go with the roof can choose from Moose Utility Division’s full-size or mid-size doors. The sturdy tubular steel door frame supports a UVresistant, PVC-coated heavy nylon cover. The entire door can be removed quickly and without any tools. Even installation is easy, with no drilling required. Instead, the included Quickfit strapping system holds the door securely in place. The upper door covers can be removed for ventilation, and an extra window on the bottom half of the door adds visibility. The folding windshields also include rubber windshield pucks that attach to the hood to protect the windshield when it is folded down. The Hypersport Suit Built for the Ride

G

etting out on the racetrack, or even navigating the streets on a motorcycle can be a risky adventure, and Icon wants to give riders more confidence with the Hypersport suit. A lot of that confidence comes from just three small letters – AAA. That AAA rating is high-level CE certification that means the Hypersport has already been put through extreme abrasion and impact testing, which it passed with flying colors. The Hypersport suit is the longawaited marriage of Icon’s popular Hypersport jacket and pants, but with a thoroughly updated look and track-worthy construction. The Hypersport begins with a 1.1-1.3mm TracSpec chassis. An integrated TPU speed hump, shoulders, elbows and knee caps are added to that for extra style and external resistance. The included knee pucks are replaceable, of course. Inside, the Hypersport has a full suite of D3O impact protectors, including the shoulders, elbows, back, hips and knees. Comfort features include a fourway stretch material and accordion paneling in the flex zones to ensure a comfortable and contoured fit in a full tuck position. Reinforced perforation zones ensure that air flows freely into the suit. Neoprene wrists and ankles reduce bulk, and the removable, washable liner keeps the suit fresh.

The Hypersport suit is a combination of Icon’s popular Hypersport jacket and pants, but with a thoroughly updated look and track-worthy construction. It features a AAA CE-rating, the highest level available.

All of those features add up to ensure a suit that has passed the rigorous testing necessary to receive a AAA CE rating. That testing involves placing samples of the suit on a machine that spins them at a set speed until they are dropped onto a slab of control concrete, where the samples then eventually come to a stop. In order to receive the AAA rating, key impact areas such as the elbows, shoulders and knees must withstand at least four seconds of abrasion resistance with the test machine spinning at about 120km/h. One of the benefits of a CE rating is peace of mind for both dealers and riders. Once the materials and construction methods used in the garment have been approved,

they cannot be changed. Even the specific supplier of the material must remain the same. That ensures quality and consistency for each piece produced. The Icon Hypersport suit has been tested and certified according to the new European standard for motorcyclists protective PPE garments, “prEN 17092-2:2017 Protective garments for motorcycle riders – Part 2: Class AAA garments.” Class AAA is the highest class currently available for motorcyclists PPE garments under the new prEN 17092 series of standards. ■

he Verona Motor Bike Expo is undoubtedly ground zero for Europe’s custom motorcycle scene, and is Italy’s best custom bike show.

Once a year in January, custom motorcycle artists from around the world all descend upon Verona with bikes that stretch the limit of imagination. For 2019 builders traveled as far away as the Indonesia, Japan, the Ukraine and the United States to showcase their unique and twisted designs at the 11th annual Expo. Given an audience like this, Parts Europe was sure to have a booth present that was packed with a number of high-profile brands and longtime consumer favorites. A sales staff helped answer questions and showed potential customers how to find their local Parts Europe retailer through the Dealer Locator app. Visitors and builders alike were definitely not disappointed by the artistry on hand, a range of hand-crafted custom machines that included bikes of every style – café racers, sportbikes, scramblers, old school designs, Choppers, Bobbers, and Baggers. While Harley-Davidson’s venerable V-twin served as the platform for many of these designs, there were also customs utilizing Triumph’s growing range of modern classics, the new range of Indian motorcycles, and BMW’s Boxer-engine-based bikes. Of course, the Verona Motor Bike Expo isn’t just a custom showcase, it’s also a bike competition where just 10 motorcycles out of the hundreds present are selected for judging by a panel of industry VIPs, with only one builder being named the “King of Verona.” This year’s winner was Japanese builder Koh Sakaguchi of Suicide Customs, whose bike The Speedster was selected by the jury that included noted builders Ray Drea, Shinya Kimura, Cory Ness and Fred Kodlin. The Verona Motor Bike Expo has become the Spring showcase for trends, ideas and wildly inventive custom bikes, and is an event that helps kick off the riding season. Here’s a selection of what show-goers got to see. ■

By the end of 2018, the hard work paid off to the tune of more than 30 new seats covering the entire Softail family, with the exception of the FXDR.

Labeled one of the performance-minded Softail models, the Fat Bob can remain an aggressive ripper with Mustang’s Tripper Fastback, be transformed into a road tripper with the Standard Touring Solo, or settle somewhere in the middle with the Wide Tripper Solo – all of which are now available through Parts Europe.

STANDARD TOURING Mustang’s Standard Touring is ideal for average-sized riders comfortable with stock positioning, but want a significant upgrade in comfort and style. The premium expanded vinyl cover features a unique trapezoid design. TRIPPER FASTBACK The sporty Tripper Fastback positions riders lower and slightly further back than stock. Features include detailed stitch work with gunmetal thread and contrasting mesh gripper vinyl inlays.

Mustang’s Tripper Fastback features a sleek, low profile design that’s formed to feel as good as it looks. The low-cut driver area is 7cm wider than stock for improved support in the hip area. The contoured driver bucket and high-rising wall offer excellent lower back support, keeping the operator planted in an aggressive but comfortable position. A streamlined passenger area keeps the low-profile look intact while providing an extra 1.2cm of width versus stock. To get as much long-haul comfort as possible out of the Fat Bob, the Standard Touring Solo and Passenger combo is the answer. The solo is a full 15cm wider than stock. For maximum lumbar support, riders can opt for the solo with a fully adjustable and removable driver backrest. The receiver is built into the seat pan. The optional 28cm wide passenger seats offer comfortable two-up riding with more padding and extra 14cm of width compared to stock. The passenger seat extends forward on solos without the driver backrest for added rider support, whereas Mustang’s recessed passenger seats are designed for use with the driver backrest. Also available for the Fat Bob is Mustang’s popular Wide Tripper solo, which places riders slightly lower than stock but at a similar reach to the controls. Offered with or without the built-in receiver to accept Mustang’s driver backrest, the Wide Tripper solo and separate passenger seats feature an additional 6cm of width for the driver and 11cm for passengers. Mustang’s proprietary controlled density polyurethane foam formula requires no breakin period and retains its shape and support after years of use. The marine-grade fiberglass baseplates, proprietary comfort foam and individually sewn covers are proudly handcrafted and assembled in their historic New England facility. ■

HANDLEBARS

Bigger and Better

Introducing the Grande Twin Peak Bars

L

A Choppers is known for thinking big, and the release of the company’s new Grande Twin Peak handlebar is a perfect example of that. In the case of these new bars, bigger is definitely better. This new variation of the popular Twin Peak handlebar is a massive 38mm (1½ inches) in diameter, a look that’s right at home on your customers’ Touring or Big Twin Harley-Davidson models.

Grande Twin Peak handlebar

These 38mm handlebars are designed to mount right up to a Batwing style fairing Touring bike – most notably those Street Glides and Ultra Classics. In order to get these large miter-cut bars to clear the fairing, LA Choppers designed a crimping device that shrinks the handlebar material down in two small areas. As you can see in the images provided, it is visible before mounting the bar onto the bike but does not show once installed. Another addition to this handlebar is the proprietary handlebar mounting system. This new mount removes the top clamp and instead uses the included saddle and corrosion resistant bolts that are installed from the underside of the triple tree. Those bolts connect to an internal threaded “slug” that is installed into the center of the bar before being bent. Attaching the bars this way – to the internal slug allows the removal of the top clamp. Doing so provides plenty of room for running wires, and makes for a very simple installation. The design of these bars is very similar to the very popular original Twin Peaks. The Grande Twin Peak bars have the

same mitered top pieces, two bend bottoms, and use a double-walled tubing design for increased strength. And, as with all LA Choppers handlebars, they are manufactured in the USA, at LA Choppers’ Southern California manufacturing plant. Every step of construction is done in-house, which allows for multiple inspections during the manufacturing process. These new Grande Twin Peaks are available in a variety of height sizes, including 20.5cm (8 inches,) 25.5cm (10 inches,) 30.5cm (12 inches,) 33cm (13 inches,) 35.5cm (14 inches,) 40.5cm (16 inches,) 45.5cm (18 inches,) and 48.5cm (19 inches) – so there’s something for everyone. On top of that, each height is also available in three different finishes – chrome, gloss black and matte black. They are also designed to work flawlessly with fly-by-wire and hydraulic clutches. ■

y the time you read this, the testing will be over and the season-opening race of the 2019 MotoGP World Championship series will have run at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar. Many questions will be answered at that race about the health of some riders, as well as how the new rookies will fare. What MotoGP fans have been wondering is how Jorge Lorenzo will adapt to his change from Ducati to Honda? After winning three world championships with Yamaha, Lorenzo struggled much of his two years at Ducati, although he did regain his winning form over the summer of 2018 with three race wins before injuries put him on the sidelines. His new teammate Marc Marquez—the 2018 world champion—had surgery to repair his shoulder and obviously hopes his troubles of shoulder dislocations are over. Time will tell. The final pre-season test was held in Qatar in late-February and the Honda duo were ranked 4th (Marquez) and 6th (Lorenzo) after three days of testing. Marc Marquez begins the 2019 season with 70 career Grand Prix victories and 7 overall world championships (5 in MotoGP). Fixing a troublesome shoulder may be his biggest challenge this year.

Yamaha’s Maverick Viñales followed up on his lateseason victory at Phillip Island in 2018 by topping the time sheets of the recent three-day test at Qatar. It took Jorge Lorenzo a year and a half to get competitive on a Ducati after switching from Yamaha. In mid-2018, his crew made some changes on the bike which resulted in three wins and a second place finish in six races. Unfortunately, injuries spoiled his chances to end his days on the red bikes on a high note. He begins anew with Honda this year in search of the speed he showed in Italy, Spain and Austria.

Suzuki rider Alex Rins has slowly climbed the ladder of success in MotoGP. He ended the 2018 season in 5th place, thanks to runner-up finishes at the last two races. He shows great promise of continued speed this year after achieving the 3rd-best time of the threeday Qatar test in February.

After finishing 5th in the world standings in 2018, Rins climbed to 3rd-best of the Qatar test, ahead of the three most legendary riders in the series – Marquez, Rossi and Lorenzo.

The Michelin technicians will again be seen in the garages and along pit lane. Michelin is contracted until 2023 as the official MotoGP tyre supplier.

hether it is on a dual-sport bike or a dirtbike, on the trail or on the road, Michelin wants its customers to have just the right tire. The new Anakee Adventure completes Michelin’s lineup of dual-sport tires, while the Tracker is a capable dirtbike tire with street approval. The Anakee Adventure is designed for 80 percent road and 20 percent off-road use, which means it fills an important place in Michelin’s dual sport lineup. It complements the Road 5 Trail, a sporty road-only option designed especially for Adventure Touring bikes, and the Anakee Wild, a 50 percent on-road/50 percent off-road tire with an aggressive knobby tread pattern.

design offers better rigidity at lean, which translates to more stability when cornering, especially under strong acceleration. The front tire has Michelin’s 2CT dual-compound technology, with the harder rubber in the middle of the tire and the softer rubber on the shoulders for a blend of wear resistance and grip that best suits the front tire profile. Michelin’s Bridge Block Technology is part of the design, too, which means thicker tread blocks are bridged with rubber to increase cornering stability. And, when the roads are wet, the Anakee Adventure provides excellent grip because of its silica-enhanced compound.

The Anakee Adventure is an ideal choice for riders who spend a lot of time on asphalt, but still want to go off-road from time to time.

The Tracker is a great option for all kinds of off-road riding, and is also road-approved. That makes it a smart choice for all the popular dual-sport bikes.

The Anakee Adventure sits right between those other two options, making it an ideal choice for riders who spend a lot of time on asphalt, but still want to go off-road from time to time. Armed for the Streets

Introducing the Dillinger Collection

K a bang.

uryakyn is celebrating 30 years in business in 2019, and the new Dillinger collection is kicking off the company’s banner year with

The Dillinger headlight trim ring is a direct replacement for most Harley models with 14.5cm (5¾-inch) headlights and has a rugged grilled design that can be run horizontally or vertically.

By all accounts, the Dillinger aesthetic is a hard right from the original ISO-Grips that started it all for Kuryakyn in 1989. The same can be said for many recent designs coming out of Wisconsin. Kuryakyn’s product development has done a masterful job keeping its loyal customers coming back with fresh offerings, while also attracting new, younger generations of riders with more progressive designs like Dillinger. Available for a variety of Harley-Davidson multi-fit and Sportster-specific applications, Dillinger design cues include pass-through styling, rugged modular construction and contrasting surface finishes for a tough and gritty industrial look. Finish options include satin black on textured black, or satin silver on textured black with zinc dichromate plating on visible hardware for additional distinctive contrast.

Dillinger foot pegs are available with male-mount splined adapters as direct replacements for most Harley models, or without splined adapters for a variety of fitment using Kuryakyn’s model-specific splined adapters (sold separately).

Dillinger foot pegs utilize Kuryakyn’s model-specific splined adapters that offer a variety of fitment options and pinpoint foot peg positioning. The durable allaluminum construction features a unique pass-through housing with raised top surface for traction, resulting in a lightweight but sturdy foundation for secure footing. Complementing the look is the Dillinger Shift Peg, available as a direct replacement for all Harley models. The Dillinger Luggage Rack proves that luggage racks don’t have to be run-ofthe-mill. Designed for use with a solo seat, this fixed-mount rack system is capable of handling almost any type of luggage with its rigid three-piece design made from durable stamped steel. Stylized cutouts on the top and sides offer multiple secure attachment points for bungee cords or luggage straps, while a slight rise at the tail helps keep the load from sliding back.

Dillinger levers are cast from quality A380 aluminum with a slotted design and thin ergonomic profile for comfortable, controlled pullback. Currently available for all 2014-2019 Sportsters.

Dillinger Handguards are constructed from a combination of high-impact injection-molded ABS and aluminum. This durable but lightweight solution to protecting your

Timeless Style

A Classic Look in a Modern Helmet

The new retro-cool FX-78 from AFX is available in Gloss Black, Matte Black and Frost Grey.

M

otorcyclists around the world continue to be enthralled by the vintage look, whether with their timeless dirt track-style motorcycles or classic looking riding apparel. Helmet supplier AFX captured that same trendy vintage appearance with its new-for-2019 FX-78 full-face helmet.

The lightweight construction offered by the unique EPS/shell combination translates into the XS weighing a mere 1.0 kg and the XL weighing 1.1 kg. Meeting both ECE 22.05 and DOT FMVSS-218 motorcycle helmet safety standards, the AFX FX-78 is available in the solid colors of Gloss Black, Matte Black and Frost Grey.

Offering a classic look in a modern helmet, the FX-78 is made with an Advanced Cone-Head lightweight EPS protection system that allows the hel7met to be engineered lighter and fit closer to the head. The aerodynamic full-face shell is constructed using fiberglass reinforced polymer offering an optimal weight-to-strength ratio.

Not familiar with the AFX brand? The company was born in 1996, says G. Doug Hill of AFX North America, Inc. Starting from a “clean-sheet” approach, the US- and Canada-based company entered the North American marketplace in the fall of 1996 with a product line of eight reasonably priced, fully featured models. He adds that the company’s products have received an enthusiastic response from dealers who note that the helmets are not only quality products, but also hot sellers.

Supplementing the mix of classic and modern, the inside of the FX-78 is marked by an attractively quilted liner and cheek pads made with a combination of perforated leather and specially treated nylon. Final complements to the helmet include a double D-ring retention system as well as a universally accepted fivesnap structure for the addition of accessory shields. The FX-78 is available in sizes XS-XXL. To maximize fit to a wide range of head sizes, the helmet is constructed in two sizes of shell and EPS – a smaller shell for the XS, S and M, and a larger shell for the L, XL and XXL.

BRAKE PADS

Premium Brake Power Sintered Brake Pads

TRW’s Sintered Road & Track brake pads offer precision performance, great braking control, and are built for a long service life.

R

iders on sportbikes, sport-touring machines and heavy customs all demand a lot from their braking systems. Precise and controlled braking is as important to them as anything else in the performance equation and right at the heart of all that are the brake pads.

The high-performance sintered-metal pad compound is applied to the backing plate using conductive sintering in a direct hot-pressing process. The result is a homogeneous pad structure that ensures a constant and consistent friction value throughout the pads, right down to their last residual thickness.

TRW’s Sintered Road & Track (SRT) brake pads address all those concerns, on the street and for fun laps at the track. As an added bonus, the pads also offer a long service life.

The braking pressure remains strong, stable, quiet and fade-free even under high-temperature situations, all achieved with low rider effort at the lever. All this makes the Sintered Road & Track brake pads a particularly good choice for sport, fast-touring and heavy-custom applications. The Sintered Road & Track pads also feature patented NRS technology, which means the backing plates of the pads feature a special hook profile that is securely embedded into the pad material. It’s added insurance for consistent and controlled braking under the most extreme thermal conditions, those high-heat situations routinely encountered during long, mountain-pass descents or fast laps out on the track.

Whether they’re out on the road on a sport-touring machine or turning laps at a track day, your customers will benefit from TRW’s Sintered Road & Track brake pads.

All this is possible because of the performance friction material TRW has developed for the Sintered Road & Track brake pads and the state-of-the-art processes used in their manufacturing.

Off-Road Riding Sprockets New Hard Parts

The 70/75 sprocket is built for tough motocross racing and is the latest addition to the new Moto-Master Hard Parts lineup.

Moto-Master’s Fusion dual-ring steel sprocket is lightweight and designed to outlast aluminum sprockets by up to three times.

oto-Master Brake Systems has introduced a new branch of the company. Moto-Master Hard Parts will include an extensive range of high-performance off-road and MX sprockets in aluminum, hybrid and steel. Moto-Master Hard Parts are designed to pair perfectly with the Moto-Master Brake Systems for off-road applications. Three sprockets that are launching the Moto-Master Hard Parts brand are the 70/75 racing sprocket, Fusion dual ring sprocket and Steel ultra-light sprocket. Moto-Master sprockets are engineered and manufactured in-house in the Netherlands and reliability-proven on the toughest sand tracks such as Lommel and Valkenswaard. The 70/75 sprocket is designed for motocross racing. The high-quality aircraft-grade 7075-T6 aluminum is extremely light, but durable enough for racing thanks to its optimal strength-to-weight ratio. The Fusion dual-ring sprocket is made of a hardened and nickel-coated steel outer ring designed to outlast an aluminum sprocket by up to three times. While it is more durable, the Fusion is almost half the weight of a normal steel sprocket because of its aircraft-grade aluminum carrier. The outer steel ring and aluminum carrier interlock permanently through a specialized heat-shrink procedure. The Fusion sprocket also comes in four anodized colors. Off-road riders who need high levels of durability can opt for the steel sprocket. The top-grade hardened steel has a special black coating for extra strength. ■

ekluse-supported motorcycle racers in 2018 earned a total of 71 championships worldwide, with titles being won in a wide range of mostly off-road racing series.

The company’s range of innovative centrifugal auto clutches and clutch products may dominate the dirt, but know that Rekluse also manufactures its clutches and related products for streetbikes ranging from the Honda Africa Twin CRF1000L to the Kawasaki Ninja 650,

a variety of Harley-Davidson models and iterations of the Indian Scout. New to the Parts Europe line-up, Rekluse’s centrifugal auto clutch is designed to eliminate clutching when starting and stopping, and prevents stalling when riding at slower speeds or maneuvering through traffic. Yet it offers your customers the ability to retain full control of shifting by using the clutch lever whenever they’d like. The Rekluse auto clutch is not an automatic transmission, however. A rider still will need to use their toe shifter to maintain the proper gear selection when accelerating, cruising, and decelerating.

The lineup available to Parts Europe dealers include such products as the company’s Core Manual Clutch Kits, RadiusX auto clutch kits (for dual-sport, Adventure and street applications, its clutch covers and its clutch baskets. Additionally, Parts Europe will carry the TorqDrive Clutch packs, which provide high levels of performance, tuning and durability. Its unique design features more disks in less space, which allows up to six additional friction disks over the stock clutch. This setup means more torque capacity so that your customers can unlock the full power of their engines without the need to add stiffer pressure plate springs. The kit comes with special steel sleeves that fit on the clutch basket and help eliminate wear and notching. The Core Manual Clutch Kit is designed to increase oil flow and help the clutch run cooler. It also offers superior clutch lever feel and reduces clutch fade.

When installed on a dirtbike, the Core Manual Clutch Kit is an upgrade that offers consistent and improved lever modulation and helps reduce clutch fade when nailing down some motos. The kit includes a CNC machined 6061 hard anodized billet aluminum pressure plate and center clutch, stainless steel precision wound plate springs, and CNC laser cut drive plates. The whole setup is designed with strategic engineering to increase oil flow, decrease operating temperatures and extend clutch life. It also offers superior clutch lever feel and consistent engagement/disengagement action.

Parts Europe is also carrying Rekluse’s line of clutch baskets and covers.

The off-road clutch baskets are constructed from billet aluminum and are hard anodized to deliver enhanced clutch modulation. They feature replaceable cushions that help protect the transmission, even under heavy usage. Rekluse’s rugged billet aluminum clutch covers aren’t just a stylish addition; they are also performance upgrades built to stand up to tough conditions. The covers also allow for increased oil capacity over stock. Global Brand, Humble Products Five Decades of Exhaust Building

Reflex 2.0

T

he people behind Arrow Special Parts SpA have been specializing in exhaust systems for nearly 50 years, continuously empowering the company that has grown to become a major brand in the global market for motorcycle and scooter exhaust systems. Yet, despite its position as a power player in the global marketplace, Arrow continues to operate as a humble “hometown” business. Now, the company’s high-quality lineup of exhaust systems for scooters is available to dealers through Parts Europe. Based in San Giustino, Italy, the company prides itself on product designed, developed, tested and produced completely on-site with the help of local citizenry and partners and suppliers based in the surrounding area. The story begins in the early 1970s, when founder Furio Giannelli and his son, local racer Giorgio, launched the company, Giannelli Silencers. It would eventually sell exhaust systems for mopeds, scooters, and two-stroke and fourstroke on- and off-road motorcycles, and grow further via OE partnerships with large-scale motorcycle manufacturers. In 1985 Giorgio Giannelli launched Arrow Special Parts to focus solely on the production of high-performance exhaust systems for race bikes. This move would lead to names like Bartolini, Biaggi, Chambon, Doohan, Moore, Schmidt, and Schwantz to be among the 40 World Champions having used Arrow exhausts. Today Giannelli brand products are built alongside Arrow branded products at the Arrow Special Parts SpA facility in San Giustino. There, the production floor offers a mix of experienced craftsmen utilizing old-style manual artisanship alongside technologically-advanced automated machines.

Among the products they produce are the Reflex 2.0, Urban and Race-Tech models of Arrow exhausts for maxiscooters, and the GO and REVERSE models of Giannelli exhausts for smaller displacement two-stroke scooters. Arrow’s Reflex 2.0 system features a satin finish stainless steel alloy silencer with a rear cap and cover in a black, painted finish. The Urban system offers a shorter silencer in a choice of satin finish stainless steel alloy or transparent or black anodized aluminum. The Race-Tech system is a high-performance option and offered with an aluminum or titanium silencer with carbon end cap. All three Arrow exhaust systems are designed to save weight and improve performance, offering easy fitment without the need to exchange variator rolls, which can still be switched out with lighter or heavier versions depending on performance needs. Silencers match Euro3 and Euro4 for noise emissions, and stainless-steel collectors are available in race versions (part number ending with –MI suffix) or catalyzed versions (matching Euro3 or Euro4 pollutant emissions standards). Both the Giannelli GO and REVERSE exhaust systems are designed to fit a wide range of 2-stroke scooters, including older models. The GO features a transparent-anodized silencer with a laser-etched Giannelli logo. The REVERSE comes with a Kevlar silencer, stainless steel alloy expansion chamber hand-made with multiple manually welded sections and – dependent on application – a set of variator rolls. ■

CS-Series Compensator Assemblies

W

hen a Harley-Davidson’s shifting gets hard, neutral becomes impossible to find and strange noises are heard inside the primary case it’s a safe bet the cause is the OEM compensator at the front of the primary drive. They don’t last forever and the price of a factory replacement will have riders making strange noises all their own. BDL’s CS-series compensators, the CS-24A-1 and CS-25A-1 for 1970 through 2006 Big Twins, and the CS-34A for 2007 and later bikes, can put an end to all that and cut the replacement cost considerably.

BDL’s CS-series compensators are an affordable fix and a performance upgrade for when the OE compensator wears out.

Redesigned and patented, they work without the OE spring, weigh less than the stock assembly and they’re easily installed. The CS-34A even works with either style stator rotor, early or late. A unique three-piece assembly, two specially designed Nylatron washers ride between the high-grade steel sprocket and sprocket carrier allowing the sprocket to rotate slightly on the carrier. Aided by those Nylatron washers that absorb the shock of hard downshifts, starting kickbacks and chain-wrap, the

CS compensators lock up like a direct drive, but compensate/counter-rotate when needed. They’ll make a Harley feel more solid overall, shift easier and run quieter, all at a cost considerably less than a factory replacement. With those two early-application models, the CS-24A-1 and CS-25A-1, there’s the option of changing the primary gearing, a move requiring a new primary chain sized to work with the sprocket change. ■

lpinestars rider protection systems are inspired by the company’s long history of competing at the very highest levels of motocross racing, and using that input to ensure all its products continue to be high performers. For Spring 2019, much of the range features exciting new colorways, allowing riders to pick the kit to match their bike and personality. The BNS Tech 2 has been designed to offer protection by dissipating and diverting impact forces away from the neck and spine in a crash. According to Alpinestars, the lightweight system works when the rider’s helmet makes contact with the frame at the moment of a crash by providing a clean, solid surface that channels damaging, compressive impact forces away from the rider’s neck and straight on to the support. New finishes include cool black and cool gray. The Bionic Chest Protector is a versatile and modular protector that incorporates Level 1 CE-certified protection on the chest, back and shoulders. With hard shell protector plates and soft bio foam interior padding for rider comfort, the Bionic Chest Protector uses a lightweight design that allows for breathability and airflow. Now available in black and cool gray. The Sequence Chest Protector is an easy to put on stone shield that is highly abrasion and impact resistant, while its ergonomic design ensures a secure and comfortable fit. It is now available in black, white and red. The Sequence Protection Jacket Long Sleeve provides riders with Level 1 CE-certified protection on the back,

chest, shoulders and elbows. Ergonomic and lightweight, the Sequence Protection Long Sleeve jacket is ventilated for airflow and comfort. Compatible with the Alpinestars BNS, this jacket features a removable elastic belt for true versatility. Available for 2019 in a striking black, white and red colorway. For young riders, the Youth Neck Support has been specifically designed for youth or smaller framed riders. According to Alpinestars, when a helmet is in contact with the neck support at the moment of impact, it effectively and efficiently reduces the overall load passing through the neck. The company claims that this prevents any fracture from occurring, which reduces the risk of muscular injuries caused by extreme head movement. Although it is not possible to totally eliminate the risk of any form of injury, according to Alpinestars this support is proven to help reduce the most serious damage and minimize the risk of collateral injury, making it a must for any young rider’s kit bag. Now available in black and white. The same attention to detail has been applied to the A-5 Youth Body Armor, which offers Level 1 back and shoulder protection, and Level 2 chest protection. The A-5’s performance plates feature an innovative grid technology for superior impact resistance for all types of off-road riding, while the air channels ensure the rider remains cool, no matter how challenging the dirt. lpinestars has earned its reputation as a major manufacturer of rider protection systems by drawing on its extensive experience at the very highest levels of competitive motorcycling racing.

This focus on quality shines through on these two products from the company’s Spring Collection – the SPX Air Carbon Glove and the Viper v2 Air Jacket. The SPX Air Carbon Glove is a level 1 CE-certified short street riding glove that has been designed to offer protection in warm riding conditions. Featuring an innovative carbon and polymer knuckle protector, this glove comes equipped with Alpinestars’ patented third and fourth finger bridge to prevent finger roll and separation during an impact. There are also carbon palm and finger sliders to guarantee optimal levels of abrasion resistance. Constructed from a supple and durable full grain leather main shell, the SPX Air has a 3D mesh top hand for plenty of cooling airflow. Other neat rider-friendly touches include an innovative stretch insert between the palm and thumb for enhanced flexibility and to aid control, a Velcro cuff closure with TPR puller for ease of use with gloved hands, pre-curved fingers to reduce rider fatigue, and a touchscreen compatible index fingertip for use with GPS units and smart phones. The Viper v2 Air textile jacket is constructed from a hardwearing 600D poly-fabric shell for excellent tear and abrasion performance. The Viper v2 boasts Bio-Armor on

the shoulders and elbows for excellent impact protection, while the extensive mesh panels on the front and rear and a full interior mesh lining ensure strong airflow. However, the Viper v2 Air is very versatile and the jacket can be also be worn in wet weather conditions thanks to its removable windproof inner vest lining. It’s extremely practical too – two-way zippers guarantee a secure closure while also allowing the rider to regulate the amount of ventilation. The elongated rear profile also improves rider coverage, and thus comfort, while the pre-curved sleeves offer increased comfort when in the saddle. Reflective details on the front and back make the rider more visible to other road users in poor light conditions and there are two decent sized external pockets, with another two wallet pockets on the inner lining vest. Other useful touches include the chest and back protector compartments, which allow riders to add a CE-certified Nucleon back and chest protector, available as an accessory upgrade, and the light mesh edging on the collar, which reduces chafing and boosts breathability. The SPX Air Carbon Glove is available in three colors; black, black and white and black, white and red. The Viper v2 Air Jacket is available in a subtle black and white colorway. ■

PISTONS

Power Pistons

High Performers Since 1953

Since its humble beginnings of producing pistons agricultural use, Vertex has grown into a powerhouse piston supplier whose products are used by a number of championship teams around the world.

Vertex has a broad range of 2-stroke and 4-stroke pistons that are a serious performance upgrade for off-road riding, racing and street applications.

P

rominent OE manufacturers, an impressive list of high-level race teams, and knowledgeable motorcycle shops worldwide all have one thing in common – Vertex pistons.

For instance, KTM has had Vertex as original equipment in its 2-stroke engines since 1996. In the MXGP series, teams such as HRC, Factory Team Kawasaki, KTM and Monster Yamaha have strong connections with Vertex. With endorsements like that it’s little wonder that tuners and engine-builders in the aftermarket have turned to Vertex. Simply put, Vertex pistons perform. Whether they’re cast or forged, for 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines, for off-road, street or racing application, Vertex pistons all encompass quality materials and heat treatments specific to the need. They’re all precision CNC machined to exacting shapes and tolerances and they all have the exclusive Vertex VP-MoS2 anti-friction skirt coatings. All this is accompanied by rigorous quality control monitoring every step of the way. This applies to the pistons that Vertex supplies to those OE manufacturers, as well as for the pistons used by those top race teams, and every piston in the full Vertex lineup carried by Parts Europe. The 2-stroke range includes Replica, Race and Pro Race pistons, while the 4-stroke line has Replica, High Compression, GP Racer’s Choice and Big Bore options.

APRIL 2019

All this began with the humblest of beginnings, a small workshop in 1953 producing spares for agricultural engines and pumps. By the early 1960s Vertex had grown to the point of producing its own 2-stroke pistons. Looking ahead to the early 1980s, the company had more than doubled in size and had embraced precision CNC manufacturing. In 1994 a Factory Team Yamaha bike equipped with a Vertex piston won the 125cc Motocross World Championship, a milestone marking the beginning of a long series of World Championships and piston-design collaboration with race teams that continues to this day. Choosing pistons is an important aspect of rebuilding or servicing an OE engine, or in assembling a custom powerplant from the cases out. For decades Vertex has supplied those pistons, every one produced following specific manufacturing processes defined by the application. Each one comes with a shape, profile and with tolerances designed to not only work efficiently inside the engine, but also release unexpected performance gains. ■

Exhausts with a Familiar Name

M

ention Bassani and chances are the first words out of a rider’s mouth are going to be Harley-Davidson. Bassani Xhaust’s lineup of V-twin exhaust products is well known and certainly respected, but the company also has plenty of options for the metric market.

Dig into those Parts Europe catalogs and you’ll find quality-built, power-producing, easy-fitting and greatsounding Bassani products for everything from Hondas to Yamahas along with applications for popular models from Indian, Polaris, Suzuki, Triumph, and Victory.

Honda

Suzuki

From Goldwings to Groms, Bassani has both ends of that wide spectrum covered. For the 2012 to 2016 Goldwing 1800s, and the 2013 and later F6Bs, there are 4-inch show chrome slip-ons featuring removable baffles and a wide choice of billet end caps.

Bassani is a place to look if your customers on Suzuki’s big, beefy M109 Boulevard cruiser are looking for full-systems and mufflers to help add a little more pep and volume. Check out the pure-performance pro street over-and-under system in chrome or black.

EXHAUSTS

Powersport Performance

It’s a long and varied list, but here’s a brief rundown of just what Bassani products are available from Parts Europe.

Triumph Indian & Victory Bassani has custom and performance exhausts for these American-made V-twins. The application rundown covers Indian’s Chieftain, Roadmaster, Springfield, Scout, Scout Sixty and Bobber. For those gone-but-not-forgotten Victory bikes, there are products for the Boardwalk, Cross Country, Cross Roads, Gunner, Hammer, Hardball, Judge, Octane, and Vegas.

Bassani’s performance slip-ons for the Bonneville, Bonneville SE and Thruxton models can give those bikes the look, sound and performance they deserve. They’re available in chrome or black and feature tapered billet reverse-cone end caps.

Yamaha

Polaris Machines Bassani has upgraded/performance mufflers and systems for a range of RZR models, including the 900, 1000 XP, 1000 Turbo and Turbo 4. The performance muffler and side-exit system for the Slingshot is not only good for an extra 10 horsepower, but is also cleverly designed to reduce the problematic heat build-up in the Slingshot’s passenger-side compartment.

Bolt riding customers can have everything from custom Sweepers to Road Rage 2-into-1 pipes with the choice of megaphone or upswept megaphone mufflers as well as shorty slip-ons. Any customers with 1999 to 2007 Road Stars should check out Bassani’s True Dual crossover head pipes. Equal length, they’ll significantly increase both low-end torque and top-end horsepower and there’s a full lineup of slip-on mufflers to go with them. ■

BATTERY CHARGERS

Lithium Love

Smart, Safe Battery Charging

L

ithium batteries are said to be the lightest batteries available, and are able to deliver way more cranking power than lead-acid batteries – all of which is true. However, both need maintenance when that motorcycle is parked, and that lithium battery – for all its advantages – needs more charge maintenance than a lead-acid model for two simple reasons. Not only does the lithium battery have less amp-hour capacity, once it has run low, it needs special charging to bring it back to full power. That’s where the new OptiMate 1 DUO (p/n 3807-0488) can help out. All your customer has to do is connect the charger to that lithium battery and the 1 DUO automatically determines what the battery needs, and adapts its charge program accordingly. The OptiMate 1 DUO can be safely connected to the battery 24 hours a day, every day of the week for the whole year because the maintenance program protects against excessive drain from the vehicle’s electrics. The cells in a dead-flat lithium battery are in a weak and sensitive state and in need of a slow, controlled charge to recover to a level (typically 9V-10V) before the battery can once again receive high charge current. The OptiMate 1 DUO does just that. It’s a high-tech, yet easy-to-use solution for keeping a lithium battery healthy and ready to fire up the engine when the starter button is pushed. It can also be used on 12V lead-acid batteries.

The OptiMate 1 DUO is specially designed to work with the unique needs of lithium batteries. It can even be used to recover a dead-flat battery.

et’s face it, sometimes being tall has its disadvantages, and feeling cramped on a motorcycle happens to be one of them. LePera Motorcycle Seats gives taller riders something to rejoice about with the Maverick Daddy Long Legs seat for Baggers.

The Maverick Daddy Long Legs is available with or without a removable backrest.

The Maverick Daddy Long Legs is part of LePera’s Maverick family of seats, but it was designed especially for taller riders. It features the same comfortable, contoured design of the regular Maverick, but the rider’s seating area is moved 51mm further back. That offers extra leg room and extends the distance from a rider’s shoulders to the bars for a more comfortable arm position. LePera reports that the Maverick is one of their customers’ favorite touring seats due to a combination of aesthetics and comfort. The Maverick’s styling is meant to blend in with the lines of the bike, not overwhelm. When it comes to comfort, the Maverick offers a deep sculpted bucket to provide ample back support for the rider. A tapered thigh area increases comfort when the

bike is stopped and the rider’s feet are on the ground. The Maverick Daddy Long Legs has a 37cm wide seating area and a passenger seating area of 30cm. It has finish options of Maverick Stitch and Smooth, and a removable back rest is available. Maverick seats are built on LePera’s iconic powder-coated steel base plate and specially-poured, high-density Marathon molded foam for premium comfort. Every base plate is carpeted to provide a scratch-free barrier between the seat and fender. ■
