A Legend That Became A Brand by D on Em de

B

efore Torsten Hallman created the brand we know today as THOR, his name had become well known and respected everywhere. Born in Uppsala, Sweden in 1939, his father and older brother were motorcycle riders, which opened the door in the late 1950s for Torsten to begin on his path to the top of the sport. He soon became part of the Husqvarna factory-support squad and competed in the 250cc European Motocross Championship. In 1962, he achieved the first of his four 250cc World titles, joining his Husqvarna teammate Rolf Tibblin, who took top honors in the 500cc class. The following year the Swedish duo repeated their accomplishments. Before the 1966 Motocross Grand Prix season started in Europe, Hallman was invited by the new Husqvarna distributor in the United States, Edison Dye, to go over to ride some exhibition races to introduce the sport of motocross and the Husqvarna brand to American motorcycle riders. Torsten entered in 23 races on his tour and won every race. Not only were the Americans impressed with the ease that Hallman and his Husqvarna won the races, but there was immediate interest in the purpose-made goatskin pants and gloves, and the buckle-type boots that he wore. None of that was available in the United States.

Torsten would prevail against Joel Robert again in 1967 to win his fourth and final 250cc World Motocross Championship. That would be the last time any rider other than Robert would win the 250cc title until Torsten’s Swedish protégé Hakan Andersson in 1973. As his racing career was nearing its conclusion, Torsten began to capitalize on his fame and reputation with numerous business opportunities coming his way. In 1968, he expanded a small business he had been running in Sweden selling motocross products and opened a branch in San Diego, California to begin serving the American market. In the coming years, fellow Swedish competitor and friend, Lars Larsson, ran the operation that would become known as Torsten Hallman Original Racewear (THOR). Today, Hallman’s popularity is as great as it ever was, and at age 79, “Mr. Motocross” still makes appearances at events on both sides of the Atlantic. His impact on the sport is impossible to measure, but his legacy is established and the brand is strong around the world.

photo: Don Emde Collection

Hallman was soon back in Europe and on his way to winning his third world championship title, beating CZ’s 250cc star rider Joel Robert. After the season concluded, he agreed to be a part of a much bigger international contingent to go to America over the winter of 1966-1967. This time both Husqvarna and CZ would be represented and the American motorcycling community was introduced to Roger DeCoster, Joel Robert, Bengt Aberg, Ake Jonsson, Sylvain Geboers, Lars Larsson and other stars of the Motocross Grand Prix circuit.

In Europe, many of today’s top motocross riders, including Clement DeSalle, Julien Lieber, Max Anstie, and Kjell Verbruggen benefit from the safety and rider comfort that THOR gear provides in all types of motocross racing conditions. In America, by the time you read this, the 2019 Supercross championship will have been decided. At press time, THOR-sponsored Cooper Webb held a commanding lead going into the final round at Las Vegas, needing a mere 3 points to lock up another major title for the THOR brand. ■

W

ell, the long awaited 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship is now upon us and the highly competitive contenders of the MXGP and MX2 classes were working their way into the fifth round of the series when this issue was going to press.

At round four at the GP of Trentino in Pietramurata, Italy, THOR/Kawasaki rider Clement Desalle rode with a wrist and knee injury he sustained in Matterly Basin at the GP of Great Britain. It was a valiant effort to salvage valuable championship points and his performance kept him in the top 10 overall in the season points run. Meanwhile, THOR/Standing Construct KTM rider Ivo Monticelli put on a strong showing for his Italian home audience, knocking out two strong motos to put him at fifth overall in the weekend’s top 10. Flash back to a few weeks prior at the third round at the MXGP of the Netherlands at Valkenswaard and you got a snapshot of that tenacious Belgian Desalle flexing his riding skills. After going 2-5 in the motos, Desalle secured the first podium of the season with second overall. With Desalle’s second, there were three THOR riders in the round’s top 10, including his Kawasaki teammate, Julien Lieber, as well as THOR/KTM rider Max Anstie. Next up these hard-charging riders make their way back to Italy for the MXGP of Lombardia, the second of three GPs held in Italy. It’s a long season, and there is plenty of racing ahead so watch these two riders, and the rest of the THOR crew running in the premier class as they fight to pile on points in the hunt for the coveted MXGP title.

Watson was no less impressive in Italy, earning himself a third place finish in the second moto, just behind Geerts.

As of press time, the two were sitting in the top five of the world championship points run. “This was probably the best weekend of my career so far,” said Geerts after the race at Pietramurata.”I had two good starts, which made my job a lot easier. Flat Track RIDING THE WAVE OF POPULARITY IN EUROPE

F

lat track racing is one of America’s oldest, and longest-running forms of motorsports, with origins that date back to the early-1900s.

Just as the sport has seen a resurgence in popularity in the USA, flat track racing is also sweeping across Europe with riders and spectators alike eager to take part in this exciting form of racing. There are now a lot of tracks all over Europe where you, your employees and your customers can learn this unique style of racing. In fact, Parts Europe’s own Stefano Erba, team lead of sales and customer service in Italy, has taken to flat track racing, and won the Over the Top race series in Italy in 2018. Take a look at the bikes you see running at the local tracks and you’ll see race bikes based on everything from singlecylinder dirtbikes and enduros, to twin-cylinder machines from Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Indian, Kawasaki and Yamaha to name a few. A great starting point are those Parts Europe and Drag Specialties catalogs, which feature a wide range of riding gear,

Riders are building flat track bikes based on everything from single-cylinder dirtbikes to Harley-Davidson Sportsters.

Italian team lead Stefano Erba’s race bike is based on a Honda Dominator 650. He took that bike to first place at the finish line of the 2019 Over the Top race in Italy.

Given the grassroots nature of flat track racing, there is a high level of camaraderie among riders and fans alike.

Hells Race is a popular flat track event in Lelystad, Netherlands that includes a Pro Class, Vintage Class and Hooligan Class.

Riders are often their own pit crew, and with scratch-built bikes propelling the action, there is often something to fix or modify between races.

T

he FIM Motocross World Championship is as big-time as it gets. With 19 events on the calendar beginning in Argentina and wrapping up seven months later in Hong Kong, MXGP is truly a worldwide motocross showcase. Another big one is the European Motocross Championship, a 15-event series with stops from Great Britain to Italy that serves as the opening act to all the European rounds of MXGP. This series is squarely on the radar of enthusiasts everywhere. Much more than simply a training ground for future motocross superstars, the European Championship is a hotly contested and closely watched competition all on its own, especially by all those up-and-coming young amateurs. THOR is right in the thick of all of this. In that premier MXGP series, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Clement Desalle and Julien Lieber, and Standing Construct KTM’s Max Anstie, Glenn Coldenhoff and Ivo Montecelli all race flying the THOR colors. In the European Championship it’s more of the same. No Fear Jumbo BT Husqvarna’s Dean Schellen, Scott Smulders and Kjell Verbruggen, as well as KTM Diga’s Avery Berry, Emil Jonrup, Kay Karsemakers and Emiel Weckman in the Women’s World Championship are all THOR equipped.

ON THOR That’s a lot of exposure, and it’s happening on two of the biggest stages in the sport. Those flashy new-for-2019 THOR colors and designs aren’t going unnoticed, either, not by the racers themselves and not by anyone spectating and cheering them on. As BT Husqvarna’s Verbruggen says, “The colors definitely stand out and that makes the difference in appearance. That Pulse Factor gear in Acid/Teal is the coolest!” That Acid/Teal is just one of the eye-popping colorways available for the 2019 Pulse Factor kits.

There’s also the multi-color/multi-graphic Pulse 2080, the Factor navy/powder blue and for the super-ventilated Pulse Air Factor there’s a white/red/black combo. They’re all major attention getters.

“They’ve quickly become my favorite,” says Diga Racing’s Weckman. “They feel really safe around the ankle and give excellent support when you ride.” The new Radial boot also inspires a lot of confidence, he adds.

All those MXGP and EMX racers have chosen THOR for more than good looks. This is the gear with decades of know-how and experience behind its designs. THOR racewear is, and always has been, designed by racers for racers. As cool as those looks are that Verbruggen loves so much, there’s real race-winning function at work.

Don’t forget about everything THOR has available for the youth market, either. The European Championship series, especially, will have the undivided attention of these younger riders. They’ll take notice of the revamped and expanded lineup of Sector Youth Bomber helmets, now coming with THOR’s Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS) and Brain Protection System (BPS.)

KRT Racing’s Desalle says it best. “With my THOR Pulse Air kit, I have all that I’m looking for in racewear gear. It feels good when I put it on and it allows all the movement I need on my bike. There’s also a good mix between ventilation and protection. It’s a nice design.” Standing Construct’s Anstie is just as enthusiastic about the THOR Prime Pro racewear he favors. “It’s so light and comfortable,” he explains. “And, of course, it looks great!” On and on it goes, the racer endorsements piling up one on top of the other. BT Racing’s Smulders says he has a hard time choosing between THOR’s Pulse or Prime kits because both have a perfect feel. He has no trouble choosing his protective gear, though, finding that THOR’s kidney belt and body protector fit great. BT Racing teammate Schellen is equally enamored with the THOR Sentinel body protection. “The fit is awesome,” he says. “It’s so light, I don’t feel like I even have a body protector on.” Then there’s the rider reaction to the latest addition to the THOR race-gear lineup, the brand-new Radial boot.

That youth line also includes Youth Pulse racewear, and Youth Combat goggles, which feature a dual-post tear-off system. There’s plenty here to give every one of those eager younger riders a big taste of genuine THOR, the same gear they see on the tracks of the European Championship and MXGP. It’s hardly surprising that THOR is solidly in the middle of all of this. Amateurs and pros alike have chosen THOR for decades, and for plenty of good reasons. This is the gear first developed by motocross legend Torsten Hallman. And, today’s THOR gear is better, more varied, and more feature-packed than ever. With the MXGP and European Championship series both scheduled to run right through September there’s still plenty of time for customers to get a good look at THOR in action, out on the tracks in the heat of battle. ■

“The colors definitely stand out and that makes the difference in appearance. That Pulse Factor gear in Acid/Teal is the coolest!” No Fear Jumbo BT Husqvarna’s Kjell Verbruggen.

THOR Radial boot in white

THE ALL-NEW RADIAL BOOT The concept was simple, create a quality boot featuring premium, racer-ready materials, lots of performance and then offer it at a price point that any serious rider could afford. That’s the all-new Radial boot, ready for deployment to the motocross masses. The development process was painstaking. Combining modern design and manufacturing techniques with premium materials, THOR designers reworked their concept many times over to ensure a quality product that would perform perfectly, be strong, safe and offer plenty of comfort and protection for many rides to come. The Radial boot has all of that. Incorporating a long list of tactical features, the Radial boot is a performance-oriented piece. There’s a Radial Ankle Axis Hinge System supporting an upper and lower lockout combination. This provides an excellent range of motion, while assisting to limit hyperextension.

Pulse Air Factor in the white/red/black combo

With this feature the Radial boot allows accurate shift and brake control while providing solid ankle stability. There’s also an all-new cam-lock buckle system designed to absorb both compression and expansion, a closure that greatly reduces the chance for disengagement from the buckle base while riding.

Sentinel GP roost guard

The Radial’s sole features a unique blend of rubber that was developed for a precise grip and feel on the pegs, all without sacrificing durability and support. That custom molded sole is replaceable, too, and is backed with a steel shank for mid-foot support and stability. While the Radial’s pre-curved and co-molded components may offer a clean look they also provide uncompromised rigidity, courtesy of countless hours of both lab-based and on-track testing. All these elements are combined with premiumgrade, fully synthetic calf overlays, EVA comfort foam and a mesh liner to promote airflow. The result is an uncompromising boot, a boot to be counted on and trusted in any motocross environment. The Radial boot is a concise blend of quality, comfort and performance.

The Adaptive 2 Series motorcycle headlights are designed to address poor visibility while cornering. These innovative headlights dynamically provide ditch-to-ditch lighting to eliminate dark corners and provide a punch of light more than 450 meters down the road to provide a more confident ride.

Harley Fat Bob and custom bike riders can also upgrade to LED lighting with Model 93M, a unique-looking dual headlight that combines a sleek profile design with precise LED projector optics and J.W. Speaker’s Dual Burn technology.

J.W. Speaker’s Adaptive technology allows the light to sense when the bike is leaning so it can redirect the beam to illuminate dark corners. The headlight calculates bank angles on a real-time basis using proprietary technology and on-board sensors, automatically directing the light array up or down as the motorcycle leans. The fitment kits include all of the necessary parts for a seamless installation of the Adaptive 2 Series headlight.

Off-Road Upgrades

Dirt Digger Performance Clutches

Barnett’s Dirt Digger Clutch Kits are an easy upgrade over the stock clutch. Its heavy-duty springs are up to 15 percent stiffer than OE, and help provide improved, long-lasting performance.

M

otocross racing can wear out a stock clutch pack in no time at all. So can most styles of dirt and trail riding, not to mention what those powerful late-model ATVs/UTVs can do to those discs, baskets and pressure plates. Off-roading, whether it’s racing, recreation or just plain work demands a strong, durable clutch, something to reliably transfer the power and do it for a good, long while. Off-roaders know this and sooner rather than later they’ll be looking for a clutch upgrade, something more than just a simple OE replacement. They needn’t look any further than Barnett. A respected innovator in the powersport clutch business for more than seven decades, Barnett has what those customers are looking for with its Dirt Digger Clutch Kits, steel-faced Billet Aluminum Pressure Plates and superduty Billet Clutch Baskets. Parts Europe carries all of these products, with applications for all the popular off-road makes and models right up to current-year machines. The upgrade begins with those Dirt Digger Clutch Kits. Included in these packages are Barnett’s Carbon Fiber and Kevlar friction materials, precision-ground/temperedsteel drive plates and new, heavy-duty springs that are 10 percent to 15 percent stiffer than OEM, and are shot-

peened and heat-treated. Every kit is checked for an exact stack height so they’re always an easy fit and the result is vastly increased performance, a stronger, longer lasting clutch with positive engagement. Complementing that Dirt Digger Clutch Kit is Barnett’s matching Billet Pressure Plate and Clutch Basket, a package that assures total clutch performance. The pressure plates are machined from high quality billet aluminum and feature a tempered-steel friction surface guaranteed to never wear out. The new pressure plates also dissipate heat better than OE units, lowering clutch temperatures and extending clutch life. A Barnett Billet Clutch Basket, also precision machined, features patented and replaceable stainless steel inserts for super-smooth clutch operation. The inserts prevent grooving where the plate tabs make contact. The baskets also have oil-passage windows custom-machined for increased oil flow that, in conjunction with the segmented-design of the Dirt Digger’s friction plates, further lowers operating temperatures and extends clutch life. ■

This new bar offers the looks of a classic narrow T-Bar, but with the adjustability of a handlebar with a top clamp. Not all your customers are equally sized, as such LA Choppers opted to release a TBar that can be modified specifically to match the rider’s height and riding style. Choppers might be a main part of the company’s name, but LA Choppers definitely knows a thing or two about performance Harley-Davidsons, and about the controls that breed of rider likes to use when out carving up the road. In fact, LA Choppers parent company and manufacturing facility actually produces many of the handlebars currently available in the market today. Anything from Bagger bars to T-Bars, the company has decades of experience designing and building handlebars. These new Kage Fighter bars are available in five different heights, and four different finishes. There’s the standard chrome, gloss black, and matte black. There is also a new

TIRES

Rider’s Choice

Cruiser Tires that Perform

Y

our motorcycle riding customers have many choices to make when it comes to parts and accessories, and one of the many choices that must be made is, of course, which tires to use. Michelin has a variety of cruiser tires to choose from, including the Michelin Commander II and the Scorcher line, specially developed with and for Harley-Davidson. The Michelin Commander II was designed to fit a wide range of cruiser models, with 34 sizes to fit everything from heavy FL bikes to the lighter FX models. Not only can the tire support a cruiser’s bulk, but it has also been designed to enhance its handling and all-weather performance. The Michelin Commander II tires are long-wearing, delivering consistent traction and excellent feedback on dry and wet surfaces. The Michelin Commander II’s computer-optimized tread is designed to minimize wear while maximizing the contact patch for the best possible grip. When it rains, the grooves efficiently siphon water away from the points where the rubber meets the road to ensure continued adhesion. The tread pattern Scorcher 21

is optimized to help the tire wear evenly across the entire profile, too. The Scorcher line was codeveloped and co-branded with Harley-Davidson in 2007, marking the first time that Michelin teamed up with an OEM to co-develop a tire. That initial collaboration has grown into the current line of four Scorcher styles – 11, 21, 31, 32 – totaling 29 different sizes. The Michelin Scorcher line is the factory-approved replacement and co-branded tire for the most popular Harley-Davidson Touring bikes. The Michelin Scorcher 11 is OE on Street, Sportster, Softail and V-Rod models. Michelin’s radial technology is combined with a tread pattern designed to perform in different conditions. The semi-slick tread pattern maximizes the contact patch while grooves evacuate water for optimal wet-weather riding. Every new Street Rod comes with the Michelin Scorcher 21 tire, which shares some characteristics with hypersport tires. It is designed to have a light, nimble feel for excep-

tional handling. The rubber compound includes a healthy dose of silica for excellent grip in the wet. The Michelin Scorcher 31 is OE for the Sport Glide and select Dyna and Sportster models, and it is the Harley-Davidson-approved replacement for most Touring bikes. Michelin had touring in mind when engineering the Scorcher 31; it was designed for exceptional handling on winding roads, the tread increases grip and the casing is designed for more riding comfort. The Michelin Scorcher 31 is an all-around tire for most any conditions a rider might encounter on a touring excursion. Rounding out the ScorchScorcher 32

er family is the Michelin Scorcher 32, which was designed for the Fat Bob. The tires have an aggressive reverse tread design and generously grooved tread patterns. Those grooves and the advanced rubber compound create a tire that looks good and delivers excellent traction. The tread is designed to wear evenly for a long, predictable life. ■

Power Bars!

Small Package, Big Audio Kuryakyn partnered with renowned mobile-audio experts MTX in 2016 to introduce the Road Thunder collection, a lineup of high-powered audio accessories specifically designed for motorcycles and other powersports vehicles. One of the collection’s top performers was the original 150-watt Sound Bar, which laid the foundation for an entirely new beast in the Sound Bar Plus. The 300-watt Sound Bar Plus packs twice the power out of the same compact unit. In addition to the increased power, a newly integrated 1.0-amp USB charging port lets riders keep their devices fully charged on the road.

Kuryakyn’s Road Thunder Sound Bar Plus by MTX is also available in a satin silver finish in addition to satin black.

A

lot of variables come into play when judging the performance of handlebar-mounted audio. From fairings or windshields to helmet styles and aftermarket versus stock exhaust, advising your customers how to get the best bang without spending all their bucks can be daunting. Kuryakyn’s new 300-watt Road Thunder Sound Bar Plus by MTX Audio is poised to ease the struggle.

The weather-resistant sealed USB port serves as the only noticeable cosmetic change made to the housing, but don’t be deceived by the minimal exterior updates. In the case of the Sound Bar Plus, it’s what changed inside that counts. Hidden within the durable weather-resistant IP66-rated housing is a new-and-improved anatomy. An internal 4-channel amplifier powers two 2˝ x 3˝ full-range speakers with dual voice coil, and four high-frequency 1˝ silk dome tweeters with upgraded N42-grade magnets. The updated magnets and speakers handle the Sound Bar Plus’ higher power output effortlessly, delivering distortion-free highs and lows at any volume level. Additionally, the newly integrated heat sink and selfprotection circuit manage operating temperature and voltage regulation to optimize battery draw. The Sound Bar Plus is also equipped with the same internal 3.0 Bluetooth receiver for convenient wireless music playback from anywhere within the vehicle’s proximity.

The Sound Bar Plus’ internal Bluetooth receiver allows convenient wire-free playback on or off the bike.

An auxiliary 3.5mm input port connects non-Bluetooth devices via cable, while the 3.5mm output port can be used to connect external amps, additional Road Thunder Sound Bars or 3-inch Speaker Pods to really pump up the volume. The compact housing and patent-pending mounting clamp system provides near-universal installation on almost all 22.2mm, 25mm and 32mm handlebars or crash bars. That, combined with its IP66 rating for dust- and water-resistant durability, means the Sound Bar Plus is capable of safe operation in a variety of riding environments. All Sound Bar Plus kits feature a quick-connect harness that allows easy removal for storage, and installation is accomplished through standard power, ground and ignition connectivity. ■

RIDING APPAREL

The Contra 2

Old-School Jacket, New-School Armor

Icon has completely revamped one of its popular classic jackets by adding a full suite of D3O armor and plenty of ventilation. Introducing the Contra 2 jacket, a great option for warm-weather riding.

I

t’s familiar, but different. Icon listened to rider feedback before reworking its iconic Contra jacket. Now, the new Contra 2 is a classic jacket that has been ushered into the modern era with a full suite of D3O armor.

At first glance, the Contra 2 seems like a simple affair – allover color topped with just the Icon badge – but the textile jacket is packing a lot of punch. The chassis is constructed from Icon’s tried-and-true Iron Weave Mesh panels, which allow air to move in and then get back out again, greatly reducing the chance of overheating. Cuff vents keep the airflow going in the arms, too. Those factors make the Contra 2 an ideal choice for warmweather riding, but if things do turn chilly, a removable, insulated full SatinCore liner adds an extra layer. The Contra 2 has Icon’s sport fit, which means the arms are slightly pre-curved to make an aggressive riding position more comfortable. Anti-flap arm straps make sure a rider can be in a tuck without their jacket flapping like a kite, but the overall fit of the jacket is loose enough to keep movement easy. Reinforcements come by way of ballistic poly panels in the tumble zones, and reflective details help increase a rider’s visibility to other traffic. The Contra 2 comes in blue, light blue, green, red, Hi-Viz and Stealth, with sizing from S to 4XL.

40

JUNE 2019

But back to that full suite of D3O impact protectors. Offering an extra layer of defense in the shoulders, elbows and back, the D3O protectors come standard with the Contra 2 jacket. D3O’s unique technologies provide both enhanced protection and a versatile, flexible material for shock absorption and impact protection. To make the package even sweeter, D3O is thinner and more flexible than typical armor. D3O absorbs and dissipates energy during an impact, reducing the amount of force transmitted to the body compared to standard foams. Because of that attribute, each D3O piece can be made thinner and lighter than traditional armor, resulting in a more comfortable, less bulky piece of gear that does not come at the expense of impact protection. The Contra jacket was the last of Icon’s old guard jackets, which included perennial classics like the Hypersport and Overlord, that had not upgraded to D3O. Now that the Contra 2 has joined the club, every single Icon jacket is equipped with D3O as standard. Riders do not have to purchase it separately, so they can ride confidently right from the start. ■

Fat Baggers, Inc. has been at it since 2004, building customized Baggers and Trikes. You’ve likely seen the company’s eye-catching designs in titles such as Hot Bike.

TIME FOR A CHANGE FA S T E Z I N S TA L L B A R S

T

ime has always played an important role for Fat Baggers, Inc. owner Gary Chipp. Back in 2004, he got started in the custom Bagger market at just the right time to be at the forefront of the trend. Now, with the company’s EZ Install handlebars, it’s all about saving time for dealers, with a design that makes installing wiring quick and easy. Parts Europe is the distributor for the Fat Baggers, Inc. EZ Install handlebars in both pointed and round tops, as well as complete EZ Install handlebar kits. In all, there are 72 new part numbers that cover applications for the 25.4cm, 30.4cm, 35.5cm and 40.6cm high bars. One of the things that makes the handlebars so distinctive also helps make them easier to install. “That top-pointed feature is a non-welded joint, and that non-welded joint is what has allowed us to have a large internal machined wiring cavity in it, which allows us to pull the wires within minutes inside the tubing, even on older model motorcycles,” says Chipp. On both the pointed and round bars, the internal construction has that non-welded top corner for easy wire pulling. The design was first put into use for Fat Baggers workers. When they started doing on-site installations at bike rallies, the staff needed to get the work done as quickly and efficiently as possible since the customers were usually waiting. “In our first round of product, we were building the handlebar conventionally, just like everybody else, and they didn’t install nearly as easily as what we wanted,” Chipp says. “So

42

PARTS EUROPE MAGAZINE

JUNE 2019

that’s what put our brains to work, and we started developing a new process to make that top-pointed feature.” The EZ Install handlebars are sturdy CNC machined, mandrel-bent billet steel with a 32mm diameter and a 0.120-inch wall thickness. Chipp says that making the bars is a labor-intensive process, but well worth it for the end result. His team can install a set of bars in as little as 30 minutes, and the design means that there is no danger of snagging and damaging a wire while pulling it through the bars. The handlebars are available with a chrome or a gloss black powder coated finish. They are constructed at Fat Baggers’s headquarters in Iowa, USA, carrying on the company’s Made in America tradition. There are also complete handlebar kits for both the pointed and round top designs. Each kit includes the handlebars, special line/cable extensions, switch wiring, pull ropes and lubrication for the wiring installation. One of the time-saving features of the handlebars is the cable system for the taller heights. Those taller bars need longer lines than stock, but Fat Baggers sees no reason to replace the entire setup, which just requires more time and work. Instead, the EZ Install kits come with special line and cable extensions that attach to the existing lines. By extending the existing lines, late-model Harleys with linked braking become much easier to work with since there is no need to bleed the brakes. It also means that independent motorcycle shops can easily install the handlebars.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Unsurprisingly, Chipp followed in his family’s footsteps, but he leaned more toward parts manufacturing and custom builds. When a customer came along asking for a bolt-on fat tire kit for a Road Glide in 2004, Chipp started calling around to find someone who made them. He came up empty, so he decided to do it himself. He had never seen a wide tire on a Bagger before, and as he soon found out, neither had anyone else. The handlebars are available with a chrome or a gloss black powder coated finish. They are constructed at Fat Baggers’s headquarters in Iowa, USA, carrying on the company’s ‘Made in America’ tradition.

“We have a bleeder inside the fairing on the bike and we only have to bleed a short section of line, which we can do in minutes per side,” Chipp explains. “We can put on a set of 35.5cm handlebars, start to finish, in under two hours on a late-model motorcycle, which is just unheard of. It saves the consumer money with our kits and our product, which makes it more affordable to get the product installed. It also makes the shops more money because they are able to flat-rate these installs and they actually get ahead of the flat rate instead of behind the flat rate.” The handlebars are made with a patented two-piece construction that bolts together via a solid clamping area that ensures a strong and safe connection. The two-piece design means that the packaging is half the size of standard handlebars, saving dealers a lot of space and freight cost.

FAT BAGGERS

These days, Fat Baggers is focused solely on handlebar production, but the company’s origin was in wide tire kits. Chipp grew up in a motorcycling family that has owned dealerships since 1973. Chipp’s father Bob has been a franchise Harley-Davidson dealer since 1984.

“We went after that project, and bought a few pieces of equipment,” Chipp says. “We did this in our Harley dealership, fabricated the whole bike and took it to Daytona Bike Week the following spring.” That Bike Week was in the spring of 2005, and Chipp was flagged down by an editor of Hot Bike Magazine to do a photo shoot and feature story. The article was titled “Fat Bagger,” and Chipp figured it was a fitting name for the company. Chipp’s newly-dubbed business was launched right as the custom Bagger craze was starting. The Fat Baggers wide tire kit took off, and since then the company has been a big player in the aftermarket Bagger scene. Not long after setting up shop, Chipp bought a semi so he and his team could travel to bike rallies across the U.S., doing on-site installs. It was from those first-hand experiences that Chipp realized the need for handlebars that looked good and installed without hassle. Now, that has been packaged into a kit so dealers can enjoy the same convenience. Check the FatBook for the full list of applications available through Parts Europe. ■

The Fastback places riders in a more aggressive and comfortable position in order to get the most out of their machines. It repositions the operator slightly lower and further back compared to stock positioning, and provides exceptional lumbar support with its high-rising back wall. All reasons why the Fastback has earned Mustang a dedicated social media mob of Dyna, FXR, and Sportsterriding supporters since its introduction. Improved positioning and ergonomics aren’t the only transformation taking place. A simple seat swap to the Fastback gives otherwise ordinary cruisers a completely new stance and demeanor.

Mustang designers meticulously shaped the Fastback’s fiberglass seat pan and controlled-density polyurethane foam to flow with the lines of the bike. The result is a sleek, low-cut and incredibly comfortable driver bucket, and a streamlined pillion section that is capable of accommodating a passenger. Support from the seat’s sculpted back section keeps the driver from sliding backward. As with all Mustang seats, the proprietary controlled-density foam does not require break-in and retains its shape and support after years of use. Mustang’s patented foam compound is unaffected by hot or cold temperatures, and provides even weight distribution and support across the entirety of the seat to eliminate pressure points and hot spots. Mustang’s premium expanded vinyl covers offer the appearance of soft leather with the durability and resistance to the elements that exceed OEM standards. The marinegrade fiberglass baseplates, proprietary comfort foam and individually sewn covers are proudly handcrafted and assembled in their historic New England, USA facility. ■

TOOLS & PARTS

Tool Time

Repair, Replace and Ride!

Moose Racing offers a range of off-road chains as well as a chain breaker rivet tool, a great package for your do-it-yourself customers.

S

pare parts are no good without the tools to install them. Moose Racing has a lot of those essential replacement parts that off-road riders need, from wheels to bolts, as well as the specialty tools needed to get them up and running. Tire swaps benefit from the Moose Racing tire spoon tool. Constructed of strong, heat-treated vanadium steel, the spoon design decreases the chance of tube pinch. The 25.4cm tire spoon has a coated rubber handle for an extra comfortable grip. Moose Racing also has larger equipment for tire changes, including a wheel truing/balancing stand, a Bib Mousse tire changer and a portable tire changer. Those tools can be used to mount new tires on Moose Racing’s aluminum rims. The 7000-series aircraft-quality aluminum rims are three-stage heat-treated for the highest strength possible, and they are designed for use with both OEM and Moose Racing hubs, spokes and nipples. The anodized finish adds longevity and the chance to color-match the rims to the bike. Choices include silver, blue, black and orange. The rims are available to fit most popular models. Replacing spokes is easier with the Moose Racing spoke wrench set, which includes 10 bits to fit all Moose and most stock nipple sizes. A machined aluminum handle accepts two threaded bits at a time, and the set includes hardened steel bits in mm sizes from 5.4 up to 6.9. The spoke wrench set is an ideal tool for Moose Racing’s MX1 stainless steel spokes, which are interchangeable with Moose Racing and stock rims and hubs. The strong T302H stainless steel spokes provide maximum tensile strength,

while the polished finish maintains surface strength. Each order includes all of the spokes required to assemble one wheel, and the MX1 spokes work perfectly with the MX1 spoke nipples, which are available separately. Riders can build their own wheels using Moose Racing’s aluminum rims, MX1 spokes, MX1 hubs and MX1 billet spoke nipples. Both the hubs and nipples are constructed of aluminum and come in a variety of color and fitment options. A chain breaker/rivet tool and master link pliers are necessary tools for anyone who does their own chain swaps. The Moose Racing chain breaker/rivet tool will break or rivet chain from #35 to #530, and the kit includes pins to fit most chains. The kit, which comes in a durable plastic case, also includes press plates and all necessary riveting pieces. Moose Racing master link pliers allow for quick, easy installation and removal of clip-type chain master links. The unique offset jaws have a notched shorter jaw, which goes on the master link pin, while the longer jaw pushes the clip into place. These specialized tools can be used with Moose Racing’s range of off-road chains, with options for everything from mini bikes to motocross. In the chain category, Moose Racing offers the non-Oring 420 RXP and 428 RXP Pro-MX chains, which are both designed for mini race bike applications. For larger bikes, Moose Racing has the premium 520 FB chain, 520 HPO Oring chain with extra high-tensile strength link plates and the 520 RXP Pro-MX chain, a non-O-ring option designed for motocross racing.

Of those options, the 520 FB is Moose Racing’s top-shelf chain, providing outstanding strength and durability. The “FB” stands for “Fine Blanking,” a precise manufacturing process that yields perfectly cut links. Tight tolerances make the plate, pin and bushing union accurate and strong. The 520 FB has Moose Racing’s highest tensile strength rating at nearly 8,000 lbs. Special sealing rings are chemically treated for added strength and reduced friction, and the FB treatment allows the O-rings to be impregnated with grease. A clip-type connecting link is included with each chain. ■

From Race to Road

Tires for Sport-Touring and Hypersports

I

t is no surprise that the word sport comes up a lot when discussing Dunlop tires. Dunlop was a pioneer in applying race tire performance standards to street tires.

With engineers and designers across Europe, Japan and North America, Dunlop has a global R&D operation that culminates in the toughest test of all – racing. For Dunlop, success in the sport of racing translates to success on the street. Two of the new Dunlop tires that encompass that “sport to street” dynamic are the RoadSmart III and SportSmart Mk3 tires.

RoadSmart III for Sport-Touring The RoadSmart III tire is designed as a sport-touring tire that offers improved grip, performance and longevity. MOTORRAD was so impressed by the RoadSmart III that the tire topped the magazine’s 2018 sport-tire touring test. Dunlop engineered several features to enable the RoadSmart III to maintain its performance characteristics for a longer period of time compared to stock tires. The innovative tread pattern was developed to ensure even wear, and its unique look includes enhanced groove angles on both the front and rear tires. The next-generation compounds also improve the RoadSmart III’s wear resistance thanks to nano technology, which adds a big dose of science to the sport-touring tire. The RoadSmart III features Dunlop’s Multi-Tread compound with an optimized tri-polymer blend and a high dispersion of silica.

50

PARTS EUROPE MAGAZINE

JUNE 2019

What that means in more relatable terms is that the compounds have increased chemical grip, even in the wet, as well as improved mileage. Dunlop reported that its in-house testing showed a mileage improvement of over 10 percent when compared to the RoadSmart III’s predecessor, the RoadSmart II. The Multi-Tread technology results in a high-wearing center compound, which was developed to be highly abrasion resistant so that the tire life would be longer and the grip would be higher. Even low-temperature grip is improved. The shoulders of each tire are comprised

The RoadSmart III tire is designed as a sport-touring tire that offers improved grip, performance and longevity.

of a grip-focused, microparticulate silica compound designed to achieve superior corner grip. The tread pattern and compound blends do more than increase longevity, though. They also increase the RoadSmart III’s handling characteristics in both wet and dry riding conditions. The unique Interconnecting Groove Tread (IGT) is a design that ensures fast and efficient evacuation of water to maintain a high level of grip and handling for a longer period of time. The cross-groove tread pattern increases the level of water drainage while also ensuring firm contact with the road.

An additional feature is Dunlop’s JLB (joint-less belt), the technology that enables joint-less construction. This attribute enhances the tire’s shock absorption capabilities, meaning that the RoadSmart III is better able to absorb bumps in the road.

turn-in grip, offering enhanced feedback and confidence in the front tire during both braking and turning. Like the RoadSmart III, the SportSmart Mk3 utilizes Dunlop’s Multi-Tread technology for more longevity and better grip in the corners. The new compound blend includes a shoulder area that combines wet-grip resin with silica and ultra-fine carbon black. The result is an increased margin on wet surfaces and better outright performance within a wider operating range.

DUNLOP

The RoadSmart III also has a revised rayon ply carcass, marking another upgrade from the previous RoadSmart II tire. The carcass now requires significantly less steering input and offers more precise handling. At the same time, a rider can enjoy reliable feedback and performance consistency.

Check the 2019 Tires, Tools & Chemicals catalog for the full RoadSmart III fitment guide. Dunlop also makes an SP version of the tire that fits sporty roadsters (available in 120/70ZR17, 180/55ZR17 and 190/55ZR17), and there is even a RoadSmart III for scooter applications (available in 120/70R14, 120/70R15, 160/60R14 and 160/60R15).

Dunlop’s race-to-road tire designing philosophy is apparent in the SportSmart Mk3, which is built to provide great wet grip and enhanced all-around hypersport performance.

SportSmart Mk3 for Hypersports Dunlop’s SportSmart Mk3 was designed to be a champion among high-performance sport tires. The new tire features improved grip in the wet, increased mileage and enhanced all-around hypersport performance. Altogether, Dunlop’s “race-to-road” philosophy can really be seen with the SportSmart Mk3. The front tire has what Dunlop calls Dynamic Front Formula (DFF) design construction. This revised front mold profile shape is designed to meet the needs of demanding riders on the street as well as the racetrack. The profile is optimized to find a balance between lower steering effort and ideal

The SportSmart Mk3 (90 percent road/10 percent track) also boasts an innovative new tread pattern to provide exceptional handling in all conditions. The pattern takes elements from other Dunlop tires, including the RoadSmart III (100 percent road sport-touring) and SportSmart TT (50 percent road/50 percent track), to provide rapid warm-up, efficient water evacuation and even extended wear. The pattern also helps enhance rider feedback. ■

HELMETS

Road, Track or Trail Introducing the FX-21 Helmet

The FX-21 Pinned color ways include matte black/ orange/turquoise (shown), plus red/white/blue, blue/green/white and gloss black/yellow/blue.

I

f your customers on dual-sport machines find themselves splitting their riding time between pavement and dirt, point them toward the AFX FX-21, a helmet that’s equally at home on-road as it is off-road.

The FX-21 helmet’s features include an aerodynamic shell design with an advanced In-molded® Cone-head® ultralightweight EPS protection system. It has 11 points of ventilation, a specially treated liner, removable/washable cheek pads, ear cavity space for speakers, a removable and adjustable (40mm) screw-on vented visor, goggle strap guides, and a dual D-ring retention system. The AFX FX-21 is both ECE 22.05 and DOT FMVSS 218 certified. Invented by Australian physicist Don Morgan, the Conehead liner is reportedly designed to act as a crumple zone around a rider’s head to absorb and distribute impact more effectively than standard EPS liners found in most helmets. The system has won a World Invention Award at the British Invention, Innovation & Technology Show and the ISPO Award for Innovation from the Germany-based sports promotions organization. According to AFX, here’s how it works. During a crash, the impact force pushing toward the head causes the higher density outer layer to compress. At the same time, the head is travelling in the opposite direction, compressing

52

PARTS EUROPE MAGAZINE

JUNE 2019

the lower density inner layer and the tops of the cones of the higher density outer layer. The energy is therefore spread sideways within the foam instead of towards the head. The increasing resistance of the collapsing cones allows the head to gradually slow down. The result is a lower g-force experience to the head, says AFX. The FX-21 is available in sizes XS-XXL via two shell sizes. Personalized sizing of the helmet is based on a combination of four factors – outer shell size, inner EPS thickness, comfort liner thickness, and cheek pad thickness. The fit of the helmet can be customized by replacing the existing cheek pads with thinner cheek pads for a looser fit or thicker cheek pads for a tighter fit. The fit can also be customized by replacing the existing comfort liner with a thinner comfort liner to fit more loosely, or a thicker comfort liner to snug things up. A large-size FX-21 weighs just 1.34 kg. The FX-21 Pinned colorways include red/white/blue, blue/green/white, gloss black/yellow/blue, and matte black/orange/turquoise. ■

Performance Off-Road Exhausts

Pro Circuit’s Ti-6 and T-6 exhaust products are more than just OEM replacement parts. Each one is a performance upgrade carefully honed through extensive R&D.

P

ro Circuit exhausts are built on a lifetime of knowledge. Since he founded the company in 1978, Mitch Payton has been focused on giving off-road racers and riders a quality product and guaranteed performance gains. Payton was a desert racer and motor tuning specialist who started Pro Circuit at just 18 years old. Other racers were asking him to tune their bikes like his, and Payton quickly realized it was a business for him. What began as a cylinder porting and polishing specialty shop soon branched out, and custom-tuned exhaust pipes became the first parts offered by Pro Circuit. Since then, the performance has been measured in numbers that go beyond horsepower gains. Pro Circuit products have helped propel racers to a total of 30 AMA championships and six Motocross des Nations victories. Parts Europe stocks the full range of Pro Circuit Ti-6 and T-6 exhaust options. Like all Pro Circuit parts, the exhausts are more than just OEM replacement parts. Each one is a performance upgrade carefully honed through extensive R&D. All of the exhausts are made in the USA and feature details designed for better performance and durability. The joint between the mid pipe and head pipe is machined for a better, leak-free fit, the components are TIG welded and the machined aluminum muffler bracket ensures a strong connection to the motorcycle. Each exhaust option features an asymmetrical muffler configuration that increases packing volume.

For professional racers, the Pro Circuit Ti-6 Pro Titanium exhaust system is a dedicated race system designed specifically for closed-course competition. The head pipe, mid pipe and canister are constructed of titanium, while a carbon fiber end cap completes the setup. In addition to weight savings and a performance boost, the Ti-6 Pro Titanium system also ensures that a bike passes AMA/FIM sound regulations. The Pro Circuit Ti-6 Titanium exhaust system is aimed at amateur racers, offering improved performance over stock, durability and a professional look. Like the Pro version, the Ti-6 Titanium features a titanium head pipe, mid pipe and canister with a carbon fiber end cap. The system meets AMA amateur racing sound requirements while still enhancing power. It also comes with a removable spark arrestor. The T-6 Stainless Steel exhaust system offers the same performance as its Ti-6 Titanium counterpart, but with a lower cost and higher durability. The head pipe, mid pipe and end cap are all constructed of stainless steel, while the canister is aluminum. It also meets AMA amateur racing sound requirements and comes equipped with a removable spark arrestor. The T-6 Stainless Steel slip-on silencer is an easy way to improve performance with just a little bolt-on work. The mid pipe and end cap are sturdy stainless steel, and the canister is aluminum. The removable spark arrestor keeps both trail and track options open. ■

TRW’s lineup of brake pads covers a wide range of off-road riding conditions, all of which provide smooth, consistent and responsive braking.

Riders looking for multi-use / all-conditions / long-life sintered-metal brake pads will find that in TRW’s SI Sinter off-road brake pads. Suitable for a wide range of uses, everything from motocross racing to ATVs and UTVs, the SI Sinter pads deliver their high level of long-lasting performance in a variety of extreme conditions, wet or dry, hot or cold, even in deep sand and mud. In addition to its broad brake pad range, TRW also has brake rotors that are an upgrade over stock, and are lightweight and self-cleaning.

ing lineup includes RSI Sinter racing pads, the long-life SI Sinters, and the EC Organic brake pads. There are brake pad applications for vehicles from Beta, Gas Gas, Honda, Husaberg, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, and Yamaha. In fact, that lineup of available brake pads fills more than a dozen pages in the Parts Europe catalogs, and there are upgraded brake rotors to go with all of those pads. At the upper end of performance, there are the RSI Sinter pads, TRW brake pads that have been used and endorsed

And, everyday off-roaders will find all they want with the TRW EC Organic brake pads. Especially suited for riding in dry conditions, there is plenty of upgrade performance here at a good value. The EC Organics will deliver good service life, too, making them a popular choice for a lot of riders. Matching any of these pads with a TRW brake rotor – especially in those high-performance applications – ensures top performance. Able to be combined with all the TRW pads, sintered or organic, the rotors are precision cut from high-strength/dimensionally-stable alloy steel. The rotors are then finished with a cross-hatched surface grinding to prevent vibrations and accelerate the bedding-in of new pads. The rotors are lightweight, self-cleaning, and their contoured shapes aid cooling. Applications cover all the popular off-road machines. ■

opping, clicking, clunking, growling and shuddering are all signs that it might be time for a new CV axle. Moose Utility Division is ready to eradicate all of those symptoms by offering ATV and UTV axles in two styles, including OE replacement and heavy duty. The company’s lineup of axles has an incredibly wide assortment of applications, which you can find in the ATV/ UTV catalog. Chances are, no matter what vehicle needs a new axle, you’ll find a Moose Utility Division option.

For the ATV or UTV rider who needs something even tougher, Moose Utility Division’s heavy-duty CV axle can handle up to 35 percent more torque than an OEM axle. Like the OE replacement axle, the heavy-duty version starts with the materials. The heat-treated chromoly steel solid center shaft has a greater density and strength than chrome steel.

Moose Utility Division’s big range of ATV and UTV axles includes OE replacement and heavy duty styles, both of which are built tough to outperform stock axles.

The axles are engineered and manufactured in a state-ofthe-art facility, using high-quality materials to produce reliable, tough products that can withstand a beating from rough terrain, water, mud and sand. Although the Moose Utility Division OE replacement CV axle is designed to be just what it says – a direct OE replacement – it can actually handle up to 20 percent more torque than its OEM counterpart. The replacement axle meets all OEM axle specifications for travel and joint articulation, but the Moose Utility Division version goes beyond the basic requirements. The heat-treated chrome steel solid center shaft improves the performance and longevity of the axle, giving it a boost of ruggedness. Even the small details have been taken into consideration. The premium quality thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) dust boots are stronger, more rigid and offer increased resistance to punctures than dust boots made of neoprene CR rubber. All of the axle joints are lubricated with a highperformance, high-temperature moly grease for superior protection under extreme driving conditions. Not only does the heavy-duty axle meet OEM travel specifications, but it also exceeds OEM joint articulation specifications by up to 5 degrees. Check with your Parts Europe rep for the full fitment list for Moose Utility Division’s OE replacement and heavy-duty axles. attery technology has come a long way, making it easier than ever to install, maintain and even transport a powersports battery. Parts Europe carries four different AGM Maintenance-Free battery styles from Parts Europe and Drag Specialties. Both brands offer premium-quality AGM batteries at an extremely competitive price. performance even in low temperatures, and less likelihood of sulfation. Parts Europe AGM Maintenance-Free batteries are an ideal choice for riders who want to upgrade from the standard lead-acid battery. The lighter weight, better longevity and stronger power all add up to a big step up from what comes stock on a motorcycle. For vehicles that require a little extra starting power, Parts Europe High-Performance AGM Maintenance-Free batteries offer a bit more of a boost. Those batteries deliver additional cranking amps to get high-performance bikes started easier.

Parts Europe carries a range of AGM Maintenance-Free battery styles from Parts Europe and Drag Specialties. Both brands offer premium-quality AGM batteries at an extremely competitive price.

In addition to that extra power, AGM batteries also hold a charge for up to three times longer than conventional batteries. Not only does that result in a longer shelf life, but it also means customers will be happy with the longevity of the product. If the battery should reach a deeply discharged condition, AGM technology results in an improved charge recover capability. Improved life cycle performance and the ability to deliver high currents on demand add to the AGM battery’s power capabilities. Those attributes make an AGM Maintenance-Free battery an ideal choice for stock bikes as well as customized motorcycles that require high performance. AGM technology also means that the battery is lighter than a typical lead acid battery, and it is spill-proof. Thanks to those properties, the battery can be mounted at any angle on a motorcycle, so it can be tucked neatly away on a custom bike that does not have a traditional design. Parts Europe is also stocking Drag Specialties AGM Maintenance-Free batteries, another battery option that is specifically designed for hard-starting, high-performance engines that need extra cranking power. The newest battery in the Parts Europe lineup is the Drag Specialties Flush Mount AGM Maintenance-Free option. This new design features flush-mount terminal adapters that eliminate the need for spacers. By taking out that extra part, the Flush Mount battery ensures a secure, vibration-resistant and direct-path connection. The design is more durable, has lower electrical resistance and increases performance over traditional battery designs. Rectangular nuts facilitate both side and top harness connections for primary and auxiliary applications, further increasing the battery’s versatility. ■

hen Moto-Master says it has products being used in professional racing all over the world, it is not an exaggeration.

In the AMA Supercross 450 class, Cooper Webb and Marvin Musquin are at the top of the championship standings. The same goes for Cody Webb and Taddy Blasuziak in the SuperEnduro World Championship. Antonio Cairoli is at the top of the MXGP charts, while other Moto-Master riders can be found throughout the top ten. Moto-Master riders comprise most of the top ten competitors in MX2. In rally racing, the Dakar Rally was won for the eighth time in succession while Sam Sunderland took top honors in the 2019 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. What all of those riders have in common is that they use Moto-Master FLAME brake discs. The FLAME discs are designed to offer high performance, light weight, precision braking and extreme temperature resistance, making it a logical choice for off-road competitors and riders who want a high-performance setup. FLAME discs get their name from the oversized flame-shaped venting slots. The design saves weight over stock discs while also providing optimal cooling. The venting slots follow the direction of rotation, and they ensure the same amount of contact between the brake pad and the disc. That means the rotors allow hard, yet very controllable braking combined with low brake pad wear. Riders can brake with precise control and improved confidence, even under the hard-braking, high-temperature conditions of racing. Each FLAME disc is made from a special premium-quality stainless steel for optimal wear resistance. The stainless steel is laser-cut to provide a precise cut that will not corrode. The disc thickness varies by less than 0.003mm, which eliminates brake lever pulsation and enhances rider feedback. Moto-Master’s FLAME brake rotors are lightweight and offer high performance, precision braking and extreme temperature resistance.

FLAME brake disc kit

Once the rotor is cut, it is fitted to the inner carrier with stainless steel floaters, which offer light weight combined with high strength and durability. The FLAME disc range is extremely broad, with applications covering motocross, off-road, supermoto, ATVs, streetbikes, sportbikes and even motocross minibikes. They can be used with any type of brake pad. Many of the professional motocross racers – including the MX2 Factory KTM and Factory Yamaha riders – in the Moto-Master family pair a front FLAME disc with a rear FLAME Factory disc. The FLAME Factory has a thickness of 4.4mm and provides the ideal solution for riders who tend to drag the rear brake. Because of that heavy-duty thickness, the FLAME Factory can handle the extreme mechanical and thermal loads created by competitive riders who keep the rear brake engaged almost continuously. The oversized cooling slots and high-quality, stainless-steel construction add to the FLAME Factory disc’s temperature resistance. ■

Knee Protection

The Bionic-10 and Bionic-7

A

lpinestars’ new range of rider protection systems is inspired by the company’s long history of competing at the highest levels of motocross racing, and draws on lessons learned from the dirt.

Bionic-10 Carbon Knee Brace

The new additions include the Bionic-10 Carbon Knee Brace and the Bionic-7 Knee Brace Set, both of which are fully CE-certified. The Bionic-10 Carbon Knee Brace is ideal for competitive racers and recreational riders alike. The design features optimized materials to create a brace that is extremely lightweight while also providing improved structural strength and support. Incorporating a chassis constructed from an advanced carbon polymer compound for improved strength and performance, the Bionic-10 Carbon is also equipped with a new double-pivoting hinge system on the knee for fast and easily exchangeable extension stops – 0 to 30 degrees, in 5 degree increments – to prevent hyper-extension injuries. Once selected, an integrated mechanical guiding system keeps the position of the knee cup securely in place while still allowing multidirectional freedom of movement. Another new feature is the patented double-wall knee-cup system, which offers strong impact force dispersion and absorption while ensuring maximum coverage in all riding positions. Comfort is also paramount, and the Bionic-10 Carbon has soft lateral knee padding to prevent pressure points. The brace is held securely in place by lightweight single straps and a buckle system. The Bionic-10 Carbon is also extremely temperature resilient and has been rigorously tested for performance at low temperatures. These features are replicated in the Bionic-7 Knee Protector Set, which differs from with the Bionic-10’s carbon construction in favor of an advanced fiberglass compound. Unlike the Bionic-10 Carbon, which is sold individually, the Bionic-7 is sold as a set but otherwise offers the same comfort, durability and protection performance. ■
