The Challenging Isle of Man by D on Em de

n addition to our cover story about ICON’s new line of racing gear, plus numerous other product features, news and event reports, we have included a report in this issue about Dunlop’s success this year at the Isle of Man TT. With their involvement there dating back a century, some historic images were also needed, which I was happy to supply from a collection given me years ago by a former Cycle World

There were over 80 riders entered in that race, but only two would have been considered serious contenders for the victory: Italy’s Giacomo Agostini from Italy and Britain’s Mike Hailwood, each riding a high-revving, 4-cylinder 500cc MV Agusta. It was standard procedure in those years for the riders to push-start their machines in groups of two—ten seconds apart—and riders competing on their individual elapsed time to cover the race distance. Hailwood started in the third pair of riders, with Ago following in the next pair. It was raining hard when the race started, surely enough to have stopped the races today, but off they went. Ago hydroplaned and fell in deep water on the course on the first lap and crashed out. On lap three, Hailwood had his own misfortune with some standing puddles and crashed in the same place where Agostini had fallen. Mike was seemingly also out of the race, cut and bleeding, plus a broken windscreen, and damaged throttle on the bike.

photographer. Dunlop’s story includes some photos taken in 1965 by the late-Dean Batchelor, who had traveled to the Isle of Man from Los Angeles and covered all the races from many key locations around the 37-mile course. Mother Nature has always been a factor at the Isle of Man, sometimes just delaying a few practice sessions with a stubborn fog, or there could be strong wind gusts and heavy rain. In 1965, it was the latter on the morning of the historic Senior TT for 500cc machines.

But the man the Brits call “Mike the Bike” was not quite ready to call it a day and he bump started the machine and reentered the race, now chasing the new race leader. As the rain clouds lifted, he was able to regain the lead and pull away to score one of his 14 Isle of Man TT victories. Mike Hailwood’s will to win carried him through to victory in 1965. This is but one of many great stories about the 9-time world roadracing champion and Dunlop’s century of racing at the Isle of Man. ■

Taking a break from the grueling MXGP schedule, Kawasaki/THOR rider Julien Lieber entered the third round of the French Elite motocross series and came away with a commanding win.

D

ue to a break in the racing lineup of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship, Monster Energy Kawasaki/THOR rider Julien Lieber made a winning guest appearance at a round of the French Elite motocross series at Bitche, France.

Riders in the premier MXGP racing series enjoyed an unusual break of four weeks thanks to the postponement of the MXGP of China until September, thus giving Lieber the opportunity to enter the third round of the race series back in April. Sand, showers and two races were on the program over the weekend and Lieber posted the second fastest lap in his morning qualifying group whilst learning the track. He needed just a single lap in the first race to take over the leadership and he crossed the finish line eighteen seconds ahead of his closest rival with the fastest lap of the race. The second race was even more comfortable as he took the holeshot, again posted the fastest lap time and won this race by an even bigger margin of fiftyseven seconds. This double win brought Lieber a handsome trophy and was a welcome interlude for the team. “It was a good day on a nice track; it was a good training before Mantova and everything went very well for me,” Lieber said. “To win a race is always good for confidence as it’s not easy to get podium results in MXGP! Of course, we have been training during this break in the championship but it’s not always so much fun to practice alone so taking in a race like this one is great.” ■

NEWS EVENTS A Decade of Service PARTS EUROPE CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY

T

oday when driving along the Conrad-RöntgenStraße in Wasserliesch, past the striking looking building with the huge warehouse, it is hard to imagine what it looked like 10 years ago. There was literally nothing – not even the bridge that connects Wasserliesch with Konz-Könen.

Then about 12 years ago, Fred Fox from Janesville, Wisconsin USA founded Parts Europe in Germany. Parts Europe is, along with Drag Specialties, Parts Unlimited and Parts Canada, a subsidiary of the US-American LeMans Corporation. Land was purchased and an office building with 3,000 sqm and a 16,500 sqm logistics centre with state-of-the-art technology was built.

Parts Europe celebrated its 10th anniversary with a huge open house that attracted visitors from all over Europe, as well as from the LeMans Corporation in the U.S.

The young company started with a very small team and sent the first parcels to dealers via a Sprinter. One Sprinter quickly turned into many, then whole trucks with containers arrived. With the increasing volume, the team also grew. Today, 255 employees from 38 nations work at the headquarters in Wasserliesch alone.

ing and THOR are very popular with enthusiasts. Attentive MotoGP or MXGP viewers may have noticed Parts Europe’s advertising banners at the races, which carry the slogan, “We Support the Sport” a maxim on full display through the company’s commitment to motorsport.

This example of internationality is part of the company’s concept – Parts Europe offers every dealer customer a contact person in their own language. This is the only way for the experts at Parts Europe to provide their customers with comprehensive advice in order to get exactly the right part for the job.

Many of Parts Europe brands support a number of MXGP riders, and they are present at many races. Several of the brands even hold events where they give dealers the opportunity to put in some laps out on the track. But that slogan, “We Support the Sport” is about more than just sponsorship, it is a guiding principle of Parts Europe’s business policy for the entire powersports industry.

W

hat is the Women Riders’ World Relay (WRWR)? To answer that question, we asked the event’s founder, Hayley Bell of the United Kingdom.

“I wanted to ignite a global sisterhood of inspirational women to promote courage, adventure, unity and passion for biking from all corners of the world and do

Parts Europe employee Mandy van Leeuwen served as a tour guide for the relay’s “leg” through Germany. She made the journey outfitted in plenty of Icon riding gear, including the Icon Airflite helmet in the Inky design.

Taking a look at the collections from Parts Europe house brands like Icon and THOR and one can see that women riders are an important part of their audience. Parts Europe even has its own female enthusiasts as part of its team of employees, including Mandy van Leeuwen, a Parts Europe data administrator.

Women riders from all over Europe joined in the WRWR through Germany.

something that’s never been done before to this scale,” Bell said. “Our aim is to wow the industry into realizing the global market for women in motorsports and to inspire women worldwide.” The WRWR is exactly what it sounds like, a relay ride around the world. After each “leg” of the ride, a baton is passed to the next group of women riders, who in turn ride their leg of the journey and pass the baton further. At the time of this magazine’s publication, the relay will be making its way through India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Laos and into Vietnam.

It turns out that van Leeuwen was serving as a tour guide of the 2019 WRWR during the leg of the ride that travelled from the Swiss border, through Germany and over to the border of Luxemburg, and Parts Europe supported her with Icon gear for the ride. After van Leeuwen returned from the ride, the Parts Europe Web Service Desk and Content Management team sat down with her to talk about the 2000km journey.

Mandy: Tiring! It was six days for me. I started on Easter Monday, riding to the Swiss border. That was about 450 km. On Monday evening, we were handed over the baton [to the next guide] and we had a bit of a party. It was fun. It was the first moment I noticed the harmony amongst the women. the week. It was a great experience! I made many new friends and met extraordinary women.

How many women were in the group? I rode with 22 women behind me in one group. It’s a lot for guiding a group, but I managed to keep them all together and it all went well and everyone was happy.

What is your most remarkable experience? The growing friendship between us! There was one lady that started on Monday evening and we ended the trip on Saturday evening. She was the only one that stayed for the whole trip with me. We both said, “We have to see each other again!” She was a real biker and we really clicked well.

A group of riders on the WRWR with the baton that is passed from group to group along the route. It featured the signatures of the riders who participated in the relay.

The journey was tiring for me as sometimes it was a bit slow regarding the speed. There were a few newbies and I had to teach a few women how to do curves for example. They had so many questions! My respect for men has increased. If you put yourself in a leading position, it seems that people stop thinking for themselves. They ask you for everything about the organisation and technical things. You have to think for everyone. It was almost like children asking, “Are we there yet?”

How was it when you handed over the baton at the Luxemburg border? It was a celebration! There were 50 women at the hotel in Bollendorf and we had a good time. Saying goodbye was very emotional and difficult.

The group of riders attracted crowds whenever it stopped along the journey.

How is your experience with the Icon gear that you received from Parts Europe? I got so much feedback from the girls about the helmet. They were asking if it is a special paint and where did I get it made. The helmet was a big success!

As a rider, did the equipment serve you well? Definitely. The last two days it rained a lot and my boots stayed dry. The jacket is very comfortable. It also has a lot

of pockets, which is something I miss with women’s clothing. You could say I rode about 600 km in the rain with the complete gear and I stayed dry.

If women are interested, when is the next possible event coming up? As we were not able to tour all of Germany, they will have a few additional tours in autumn in East Germany for people that could not attend. They are also already talking about doing it next year again. And, the relay continues to go around the world. Let’s hope it will become a tradition and it reaches the aim to direct the industry’s attention on woman riders. ■

NEWS EVENTS Track Day Delight PARTS EUROPE, MICHELIN TEAM UP FOR A WEEKEND OF RIDING

O

nce again Parts Europe and Michelin teamed up to hold the Riding Experience, a weekend track ride for dealers who qualified by purchasing a set number of tires.

Professional instructors supported the riders during the day, and provided advanced guidance and experience. There were also two groups of experienced riders who got to ride the track without instructors.

The Parts Europe Riding Experience – powered by Michelin, offered those dealers a unique experience on a professional race track back in June. Riders got to equip their bikes with Michelin tires and take part in professional riding classes.

The event included everything necessary to enjoy a weekend at the race track. This included a Michelin tire changing facility and workshop, a BBQ on the 2nd and 3rd of June, catering on both days, medical professionals, refreshing facilities, and an overnight stay in the paddock with a caravan or tent.

The entire group assembled and ready for a day at the track. The day started at 9 a.m. with a briefing, but before that all motorcycles had to pass a noise emission check. Everyone passed and was soon out riding.

A host of Parts Europe vendors and house brands set up product displays, and had a number of product specialists on hand to answer questions.

German television presenter Jens Kuck made a nice video about this event that he later posted to YouTube.

Fresh in the Parts Europe catalogs, Icon’s new Hypersport leather suit was put to the test out on the track during the weekend of riding.

Parts Europe also invited other brands to attend the event with product specialists and a selection of products. The brands included Gilles, LiquiMoly, Magura and TRW. Parts Europe also had a huge display of Alpinestars gear, Icon helmets and apparel, as well as SENA communications systems installed on new Z1R helmets. All attendees had the chance to talk to the product specialists of the brands and get a good overview of the newest products. Magura even offered them a chance to try their products on the racetrack.

The event also features some editors from popular motorsport publications, including Tobias Höfer from the German Motorradfahrer, who tested the new Icon Hypersport leather suit. Jens Kuck, a television presenter from Germany’s Grip TV show, went riding with a Yamaha MT07 and a Beta changed to a Supermoto bike with a lot of parts from Magura, Moose Racing and MotoMaster. The event took place from 3rd till 4th of June 2019 at the Circuit de Chenevières in France, and the weather conditions could not have been better. ■

s one of the teams in the motorcycle drag racing Pro Stock Bike class, the Swedish Lyrén/Parts Europe Pro Stock Team perfectly exemplifies the Parts Europe slogan, “We Support the Sport.”

Not only is crew chief Roger Lyrén Parts Europe’s country sales manager for Scandinavia, his son Karl “Kalle” Lyrén is the rider of the team’s Pro Stock monster bike, and a very successful Parts Europe sales representative. The team recently attended a race in Tierp, Sweden, the second in the FIM-E-Championship series, and although it went in with modest expectations, it emerged as the #1 qualifier, a race win and two new European speed records – 6.969 ET and 311.78km/h top speed. More than 260 teams and 25,000 visitors attended the event, including some Parts Europe dealers, where they had the chance to check out an Indian Scout and a Harley-Davidson equipped with parts and accessories from the Parts Europe and Drag Specialties portfolio. “We came to Tierp with small expectations since we have had a very busy winter and spring with a lot of work with Parts Europe, so we didn’t expect to have more than just

fun at the race,” Karl “Kalle” Lyrén said. “After the first turn we were Number 1 qualifier with a pretty good time of 7.04 seconds. The track was really good and we were lucky that the weather was good the whole weekend, so we could get five qualifying turns. “We ended up … with a new official European ET and speed record, and in the first turn we also went even faster and reset the record again,” Kalle Lyrén said. “In the finals we met the 6-time European Champion, Fredrik Fredlund, and I overtook him already from the start and was in front of him all the way to win the race and the event.” Congratulations to Kalle and his team for his recordbreaking run! ■

Long known for its edgy street gear, Icon has kicked things up a notch with its track-focused Hypersport leather suit. The Hypersport suit evolved from its popular Hypersport jacket and pants, and is purpose-built with a host of track-ready features, including a 1.1-1.3mm TracSpec leather chassis and a full suite of D3O impact protectors.

hen roadracers and track day riders think of leather suits, Icon may not be a brand that quickly comes to mind. Better known for its edgy street gear and in-your-face graphics, Icon is showing a little bit of its grown-up side with the Hypersport suit. The suit, along with gear like the Hypersport 2 jacket and pants combination and the D3O vest, show that Icon is committed to gaining an advantage over the asphalt. In the case of the Hypersport, that asphalt is on the race track.

Of course, simply talking about the new Hypersport suit is not nearly as effective as actually putting the suit on someone who can race in it, then talk about it. That privilege goes to Chris White, the U.K. sales rep for Parts Europe. White and his teammate Dave Crampton compete in the FIM European Endurance Classic, a four-round series that visits tracks in France, Germany, Belgium and Italy. White and Crampton split the riding duties on their 1986 Suzuki GSX-R1100 during each four-hour race. While the series was designed for older motorcycles up to that model year, they certainly do not have to be stock in the Open class that White and Crampton compete in. The Suzuki is

modified for both more power and less weight: the 160kg bike makes over 160bhp. In addition, it features a lot of parts found in the Parts Europe catalog, making it a true high-speed sales tool. When Icon outfitted White and Crampton in the Hypersport suit, the company knew it would be held to high standards. White was a British Champion in 1989 and a racer for Buell Motorcycles in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He retired but eventually had what he calls his midlife crisis, which prompted him to race again. Crampton, whose career started in the early 1980s, had a broad career that included racing a Suzuki 500 in the

British Grand Prix. Crampton and White used to compete with each other several decades ago, so they figured it was time they teamed up together for a change. For White, giving the Icon Hypersport suit a proper realworld test seemed natural. “Icon has launched its first race suit, so it makes sense for us to use it and see if it’s up to the job. I can’t recommend it to my dealers if I don’t use it,” he says. The Hypersport suit evolved from Icon’s Hypersport jacket and pants, which are a longtime staple of the brand. The suit got an updated look—with color options in black and white—as well as a big boost in track-ready features.

receive the AAA rating, key impact areas such as the elbows, shoulders and knees must withstand at least four seconds of abrasion resistance with the test machine spinning at about 120km/h.

The 1.1-1.3mm TracSpec leather chassis is bolstered by a full suite of D3O impact protectors, including the shoulders, elbows, back, hips and knees. D3O armor is made from an advanced patented polymer that absorbs and dissipates energy during an impact, reducing the amount of force transmitted to the body compared to standard foams. That means D3O can be produced thinner and lighter than traditional armor without compromising the effectiveness. That allows the Hypersport suit to have a more contoured fit and lighter weight, while still maintaining a high standard for armor. Altogether, the details of the Hypersport suit have resulted in it having one more very important feature: a AAA CE rating, which is the top CE rating a piece of gear can have. To get that rating, suit samples were placed on a machine that spun them at a high speed, then dropped them

One of the best things about a CE rating is that it ensures consistency. Once the materials and construction methods used for a certified piece have been approved, they cannot be changed. Even the specific supplier of the material must remain the same. The quality that the test suits were made with is the same quality that every future suit will have, too. The CE rating also ensures that the Hypersport suit is compliant with a law enacted by European Parliament. It states that as of April 2018, all motorcycle gear labeled as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be independently tested and certified by an independent body. “The first thing that came as a surprise was the light weight of the suit,” says White. “As it is CE AAA rated, we were expecting a heavy, unvented suit, but this suit is super light and has massive accordion panels, so there are no tight areas that need breaking in.” Icon built a lot of details into the Hypersport suit. knee caps add another layer of resistance as well as an extra dose of styling. The included knee pucks are easy to replace. In addition to the accordion panels in the flex zones, the Hypersport suit also includes a four-way stretch material for easy movement on the bike. Neoprene wrists and ankles reduce the bulk for a more comfortable ride, and the inner liner is removable and washable—definitely an important feature for any endurance racer. Reinforced perforation zones allow air to flow freely into and out of the suit without compromising durability. For White, the ventilation is a premium feature of the Hypersport suit. “The first race was under the Mediterranean sun, and the ventilation on both the suit and Airframe Pro Helmet was brilliant,” he says. “Most suits only have ventilation on the front, but with the Hypersport suit, the ventilation on the rear allows for a massive flow of air through the suit. Cold air in the front and hot air out of the rear, which over four hours dramatically reduces fatigue.” While the Hypersport suit is squarely aimed at racers and track riders, the Icon Hypersport 2 jacket and pants are designed for street riders who take kitting up seriously. Like the suit, the Hypersport jacket and pants have a sturdy 1.1-1.3mm TrackSpec leather chassis with integrated flex zones. The jacket has CE-certified D3O impact protectors in the shoulders, elbows and back, and the pants have them in the knees and hips. A zipper on each piece connects the jacket and pants for an even more secure fit. On the jacket, a chest vent can double as a pocket when temperatures are cooler, and reflective screenprints give other traffic on the road a heads up. The removable, insulated liner minimizes bulk but ensures that the Hypersport 2 jacket is a viable option even in cooler temperatures. The Hypersport 2 pants also have integrated flex zones, as well as an elastic waistband that is comfortable even in an aggressive riding position.

While the Hypersport suit and Hypersport 2 separates offer allover coverage, Icon’s D3O vest is for riders who want to supplement their existing gear. It is lightweight and flexible, and includes an array of D3O impact protectors and injectionmolded articulating plates. They’re all held together with the bare minimum of material to ensure that the rig still allows airflow to get to the rider’s body.

As for White and Crampton, they wound up on the podium in the opening round of the season at Circuit Paul Ricard. Despite completing the bike build only two days before the race, high winds that actually tore the fairing off, a clutch cable that broke with two hours to go and a flickering headlight in a race that ran into the night, White and Crampton still managed to hang on for second place. It was an exciting first outing for their Hypersport suits. The second round at Germany’s Motorsport Arena Oschersleben was disastrous for most of the top teams, including White and Crampton, when a front-runner oiled the track on lap two and eight other teams went down on the slick surface. Undaunted, quick repairs got White and Crampton back on track, and their perseverance put them into the points lead. ■

While the Hypersport suit and Hypersport 2 separates offer allover coverage, Icon also has a D3O vest for riders who want to supplement their existing gear. The D3O vest is lightweight and flexible, and Icon introduced it as an attractive option for riders who say they skip quality armored gear because it is too bulky or uncomfortable. The D3O vest is essentially a collection of D3O impact protectors and injection-molded articulating plates, all held together with the bare minimum of material to ensure that the rig still allows a rider’s body to get airflow. Adjustable shoulder and waist straps create a snug fit so that the vest can fit easily under a jacket or full suit. Each vest includes an integrated E.C.I. (Emergency Contact Info) badge. In an effort to get some real-world feedback about the suit, Icon outfitted Parts Europe U.K. sales rep Chris White in the Hypersport suit for the FIM European Endurance Classic race series. White and his teammate Dave Crampton wore the Hypersport while campaigning their 1986 Suzuki GSX-R1100 in the four-round series. “Icon has launched its first race suit, so it makes sense for us to use it and see if it’s up to the job,” White says. “I can’t recommend it to my dealers if I don’t use it.” Put to the test, the Hypersport suit passed with flying colors. Not only is it incredibly lightweight, the suit’s high-flow ventilation system does wonders for keeping cool and preventing fatigue, even after hours of riding, White explains. Whether for racing, track day use or weekend canyon carving, the Hypersport suit is built to perform.

he most successful tire brand in the long, storied history of the Isle of Man TT was at it again in 2019. Dunlop, an involved competitor at nearly every one of those IOM TT dating all the way back to the initial 1907 races, was once again the tire of choice for the top racers in every class. From the increasingly popular all-electric TT Zeros to the serious runners in the Senior TT, the fast bikes on that Mountain Course were Dunlop shod. on Dunlops. Whether they were the KR106/KR108 slicks or the street-legal D213 GP Pros, those tires were on a variety of makes and models. Riders Michael Rutter in the electrics class, Peter Hickman in Superstock and Superbike, and Lee Johnston in Supersport. In the last 15 years alone, top IOM TT riders have chosen Dunlop to claim more than 60 victories and 150 podium finishes, with 13 consecutive wins in the flagship Senior TT event alone. It’s an impressive record, especially considering where all this is happening. The Isle of Man TT is not your average race event, and it’s certainly not the average race

Multi-tread technologies, Jointless Belt construction, fast-warming/long-lasting compounds, distinctive, cutting-edge tread patterns, all those technologies and more owe their existence to the Isle of Man TT. These are the performance-enhancing features on Dunlop’s GP Racer D212/GP Racer Slick D212 tires, Sportsmart TT tires, Mk3 tires, the Sportsmart 2 Max tires, and the budget-friendly GPR-300 tires. Dunlop’s pedigree in the IOM TT translates into the full lineup of street-legal Dunlop tires.

Hyper Sport & SportSmart Tires

At the 2019 IOM TT, Lee Johnston and Peter Hickman both secured their victories in the twin Isle of Man Supersport TT races on Dunlop’s D213 GP Pro tires – Johnston winning race one and Hickman winning his first Supersport race and second victory of the week. Those tires, developed to provide high-speed stability and featuring newly formulated compounds that allow fast warm-up times, gave those riders the ability to charge hard with confidence right from the start.

Continuing a tradition unbroken for decades, the quick riders at the Isle of Man 2019 were once again competing on Dunlops like the KR106/KR108 slicks. Sebastien Montet, Dunlop’s technology director, outlines the contributions the IOM TT’s made to tire innovation over the years. “At the beginning of this incredible run of Senior TT success, we had just introduced our MultiTread technology to our road racing tires, a mix of compounds to boost durability and grip at the same time,” Montet said. “In the middle of the last decade, we followed that with our NTEC technology, a highly-reinforced casing allowing riders to run lower inflation pressures for a bigger footprint and extra compliance from the casing. “At the same time we introduced our Jointless Belt Construction, giving riders smoother handling, straight-line stability and a reduced ‘weave effect.’ All technologies are now available throughout the entire Dunlop sportbike lineup.” More recently the focus has been on temperature control, a new Dunlop Heat Control Technology employing different layers of compound with the base compound tuned to either generate or reduce heat build-up in order to optimize the performance of the top layer of the compound. All this and more comes directly from Dunlop racing. More specifically, from Dunlop racing over those public roads on the Isle of Man.

course. That legendary Isle of Man Mountain Course, a 37.73-mile-long test of both man and machine, is carved out of the island’s public roads. For more than 100 years the Mountain’s challenge has drawn racers and race fans alike. Glen Helen, Ballaugh, Ramsey Hairpin, the Bungalow, Cronk-ny-Mona, noted checkpoints along that 37-plus mile course, are all burned into the lexicon of motorcycle racing history. Dunlop, having competed in virtually every one of these races since the very beginning is another name irrevocably linked to the TT. Dunlop riders have not

only won races on the Isle of Man, they’ve set and broken countless records over that century-plus span. All this racing success doesn’t end at the podium, though, and it never has. The TT has always been a major contributor to Dunlop’s overall tire development program. The unique nature of this race, run on actual public roads, allows Dunlop to transfer what’s developed for those 37.73 miles directly to its tires for the street, tires built and delivered to the everyday rider.

One of the more significant landmarks in this trickledown technology took place 50 years ago. After the 1969 race, the Dunlop K81 was renamed the TT100 because it was the first production tire to set a lap speed of 100 mph when Malcolm Uphill took his Triumph to the 750cc class victory. In a demonstration of Dunlop’s commitment to the classic bike market, a version of this tire is still available today. Moving forward to the present day, Dunlop’s modern-day treaded tires chosen by top riders in the just-completed

This year the Dunlop R&D focus was on a compound that heats up quicker, essential to boost rider’s confidence on a chilly morning before racing down Bray Hill right out of the start line. It’ll be equally essential to the street riders who’ll benefit from this in their road-legal Dunlop performance tires.

The Isle of Man TT, the one event topping the wish-list for many motorcycle racing fans for more than a century, has also been that unofficial R&D lab and test track for Dunlop over all those years. Along with the scores of wins and lap records set over the decades has come many of the milestone developments directly incorporated into the full lineup of Dunlop tires available to everyone. ■

Form Meets Function

New Phantom Line Blends Style and Purpose

I

t’s been five years since the latest revival of Indian Motorcycle. During that span, Kuryakyn has amassed a broad lineup of aftermarket accessories with well over 1,000 direct- and multi-fit components in this year’s catalog.

Available for all 2014-later Indian models including Scouts, Phantom grips deliver style and comfort for the long haul.

The all-new Phantom collection is perhaps the most striking addition to date, and confirms that Kuryakyn is remaining loyal to Indian’s rising following. The Phantom collection showcases modern, aggressive designs that keep functionality intact to enhance the look, feel and performance of your customer’s ride. The coordinating line of hand and foot controls was introduced late last year, and they immediately became popular.

More surface area plus forward, middle and rear mounting positions make the Phantom mini boards a versatile upgrade.

While the collection is largely focused around grips, levers and select foot controls specifically for Indian, there are also multi-fit components in the lineup. Phantom mirrors, footpegs and mini boards are all compatible with Kuryakyn’s range of model-specific mirror and splined footpeg adapters, allowing additional fitment on a wide variety of Harley-Davidson models and more.

Phantom driver floorboards and brake pedal pad are direct replacements for stock on Indian cruisers, baggers and touring models.

All Phantom foot control components are constructed from durable aluminum alloy combined with premium EPDM rubber, creating a solid foundation for stability, traction and vibration-dampening comfort. Signature design cues include pass-through styling and sleek angular housings that complement a variety of bikes.

The Phantom shift peg replaces the stock shift peg on all Indian models, as well as the rear brake peg on Scout models and select Victory cruisers.

The Phantom driver floorboards feature a swept-wing design that provides abundant foot room as direct replacements for Indian’s cruiser, bagger and touring models. Phantom mini boards are a scaled-down version of the driver boards that offer a wide range of foot placement and adjustability with forward, middle, and rear mounting locations for the splined adapters. Phantom grips, levers and mirrors all make your customer’s ride stand out without sacrificing function. The grips combine ribbed soft rubber inserts and aluminum housings with an ergonomic profile that puts the rider in complete control. Phantom levers complement the look with their sculpted, dished profile that offers a comfortable reach and maximum leverage. ■

The forged aluminum Phantom mirrors are available in 7/8-inch and 1-inch bar-end applications, as well as with traditional stem mounts.

This new addition to the LA Choppers family holds true to their company motto of “raising the bar.” These beautiful 3.175 cm thick, double walled bars are built to be abused and were made to turn heads. As we start at the triple trees and work our way up, the risers themselves are tapped and ready for internal wiring at the base for a super clean look. The top bar is inspired by the boys in the dirt and offer that “dirt bike” feel at 77.5 cm wide and 12.7 cm of pull back. These bars are made to split lanes, crush corners and rip wheelies! These new One Piece Kage Fighter T-Bars are offered in a variety of sizes, at 20, 25.5, 30.5, 35.5 and 40.5 centimeters of overall rise so there is a height for everyone’s style and needs. And if you want the bars a little closer to you, there is a pullback version available as well! Don’t think that LA Choppers has forgotten about the new Softail line, these bars are notched and ready for FBW (fly-by-wire). So, no matter if it’s a 1986 FXRT or a brand spanking new 2019 FXLR these bars are compatible with a variety of makes and models. LA Choppers offers this bar in two finishes, chrome or gloss black to compliment any build. Your only limitation is the limits of your imagination.

The One Piece Kage Fighter T-Bar is LA Choppers' follow up to its popular multi-piece Kage Fighter handlebars.

LA Choppers builds some amazing American-made handlebars and their pride in that shows in the products they produce. They also understand the concept of affordability with competitive pricing, as well as the most important piece of the puzzle in our industry…availability. LA Choppers is one of the leading manufacturers of handlebars and they understand that you can have an amazing product, but if you fail to deliver that product, you have let the dealers and customers down. Backorder is a foul word on their factory floor. ■

Bold New Riding Gear

M

oose Racing’s M1 line of off-road gear continues to grow with the addition of the M1 Agroid jersey and pants. Updated features combined with edgy graphics make the Agroid gear a notable entry to the M1 line, and they are perfectly complemented by the new MX2 Agroid gloves. The M1 Agroid gear might be based on the race-winning M1 racewear chassis, but it definitely has its own unique look thanks to the cutting-edge graphics. The jersey and pants are available in four colorways – black/white, black/ red, black/orange and black/mint. While the graphics are an aggressive new look for Moose Racing, the colors are more understated than what offroad racewear typically features. Because the graphics are sublimated, they will retain their color no matter how many times they take on the track or the washing machine. Of course, the M1 Agroid gear is a lot more than just good looks. Both the jersey and pants have a host of premium features that ensure riders stay cool, comfortable and covered.

The M1 Agroid jersey’s ventilation attributes have been improved from the original M1 design. Panels of micro mesh in non-roost zones allow air but not extra dirt to get in, while the roost zones are semi-ventilated for additional airflow. The jersey’s moisture-wicking material pulls sweat away from the skin and dries quickly for a more comfortable ride, even on hot days. The jersey also features a silicone logo on the tail, which helps keep the jersey tucked in. Additional features of the M1 Agroid jersey include a custom collar with stretch neck taping and non-restrictive durable stretch mini cuffs. Moose Racing offers the M1 Agroid jersey in sizes SM-3X. The design team at Moose Racing wanted to make the M1 Agroid pants extremely durable, so they are constructed of a high-denier polyester chassis with double- and triplestitched seams. The seat is reinforced with an additional layer of polyester, too. The knees feature full-grain leather inner panels for extra abrasion resistance.

Like the M1 Agroid jersey and pants, the MX2 Agroid gloves feature edgy graphics and color options of white, red, orange and mint. The minimalist, slip-on style glove has a sublimated spandex backhand, which ensures a breathable stretch fit for maximum comfort and performance. Meanwhile, the palm has a single layer of synthetic leather, which increases abrasion resistance while still allowing maximum feel on the grips. A silicone print on the palm and fingers add control, allowing the rider to get a better grip even in wet conditions. The lightweight MX2 Agroid glove has a pre-curved pinched finger design for an ergonomic fit, too. The gloves are available in sizes SM-3X. Moose Racing is also still stocking the popular M1 gear, including the jersey and pants in six different colorways.

The more traditional graphic design comes in blue/cyan, black/hi-viz, red/yellow, black/pink, black/orange and stealth, which is a low-key black and gray combination. Like the M1 Agroid jersey, the M1 version features ventilation panels, quick-drying fabric and high-quality sublimated graphics. The pants are made from a durable high-denier polyester chassis with leather knee panels, a pre-bent ergonomic design and an adjustable waist. The M1 Agroid and M1 gear pair perfectly with Moose Racing’s M1.3 MX boots. The CE-certified boots are a premium off-road footwear option. The boots are made from a polyurethane-coated synthetic leather that has a heavyweight suede inner calf guard. Reinforcements on the shin, ankle and foot are combined with an internal rigid steel shank to provide additional resistance and stability.

MOOSE RACING

In the comfort department, the M1 Agroid pants have oversized knees for unrestricted movement and the legs have a pre-bent ergonomic design. In another notable upgrade from standard pants, the M1 Agroid pants have new structured mesh knee panels that help improve ventilation on the legs. A three-point waist adjustment system allows the rider to fine-tune the fit, and a sturdy YKK locking zipper will stand up to the elements. The M1 Agroid pants are available in sizes 28-42.

The lower toe box is an updated design from the previous M1.2 boots that improves brake feel and ease of shifting. Inside the M1.3 MX boots, a speed lacing system adds stability, a moisture-wicking liner keeps a rider’s feet comfortable and soft EVA foam adds cushioning in impact areas. ■

A Tire for Touring Introducing the Road 5 GT

R

iders have been asking for a tire that has longevity, performance and wet-road capabilities, all while deftly handing the weight of grand touring bikes. Michelin has answered by expanding the Road 5 tire line to include the Road 5 GT. The tire is adapted for larger grand touring bikes like the BMW R1250RT, BMW K1600GT, Honda Pan European 1300 and Yamaha FJR 1300. The architecture of the Road 5 GT is specially designed for these heavier bikes, offering the stability expected by riders without compromising the features that make the Road 5 such a popular tire, like grip and performance in the wet. The Road 5 GT is the successor to the Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT, combining latest-generation rubber

improve the tire’s water-clearance capacity. With wear, the sipes reveal wider grooves to increase the tire’s waterclearing channels in proportion to the tire’s contact patch, helping the tire maintain its ability to clear water. The compounds are also an important factor in the Road 5. The rear tire is designed with Michelin’s 2CT+ Technology, which has a more durable rubber in the center of the tread as well as underneath the softer-compound shoulders. The design allows the tire to have better rigidity at lean, which translates to more stability when cornering, especially under strong acceleration. The front tire has Michelin’s 2CT dual-compound technology, with the durable rubber in the middle of the tire and

compounds, dual-compound technology and a carefullyengineered siped tread pattern. Michelin has the Road 5 GT available in two front sizes and four rear sizes. One of the biggest selling points of the Michelin Road 5 line is that the tires provide premium wet grip without compromising performance in the dry. During testing, Michelin found that even after 3,000 miles, the Road 5 could brake in wet conditions in the same distance as a new Pilot Road 4. That long-lasting wet performance is due in large part to the Michelin XST Evo sipes. A combination of sipes and reservoirs are designed to slice through surface water and

The adaptive casing enables progressive rigidity of the tire shoulder, so the rider has excellent stability and better behavior on both straight lines and bends. While those traits are meant to give the rider confidence, Michelin hopes it will also make the ride more fun. ■

Total Transformation

New-Look Squareback Checks All the Boxes

A

fter recently introducing the HighTail Fastback, a completely updated version of a longtime fan favorite, Mustang Seats took another cult classic and gave it a total transformation.

The all-new Squareback for Harley-Davidson Touring bikes is based off of a mainstay among Mustang’s Dyna offerings. Its speed-inspired design balances a lean profile with ergonomic bucket-seat styling that keeps even the heaviest of throttle hands planted comfortably in the saddle. The purpose of a quality aftermarket seat is to change both the look and feel of a motorcycle. Mustang’s Squareback undoubtedly checks both of those boxes, giving customers an option that performs and delivers a truly unique look with off-the-shelf custom flavor. The restyled cover features split-panel tuck-and-roll inlays with added padding for comfort and a classic pleated appearance. The cover also blends smooth and perforated vinyl with brass grommet accents on the outer rear panels for subtle contrasting elements. With a reputation built on comfort and quality, you know the designers at Mustang aren’t all about show. Not only does the Squareback alter the appearance of a ride, it also flat-out enhances its performance. Operator placement is similar in terms of reach to the controls and ground compared to the standard factory seat, but the Squareback is designed for more aggressive positioning. Riders get the feeling of sitting further into the motorcycle without actually being lowered, boosting cornering as well as slow-speed maneuvering confidence.

Mustang has taken its classic Squareback seat and given it a complete makeover to provide upgraded styling and ergonomic performance for Harley-Davidson Touring models.

Its hand-sculpted 25.4cm driver bucket and signature vertical wall are contoured to relieve tailbone pressure and provide excellent lumbar support. A low profile 16.5cm tail section keeps the streamlined look intact and features a flat, squared-off platform ideal for the occasional piece of luggage or two-up joyrides. At the heart of every Mustang seat is the proprietary controlled-density foam formula that comes fully broken in out of the box, and retains its shape and support after years of use. The patented foam compound offers even weight distribution across its entire width, eliminating pressure points and hot spots. To aid in vibration reduction, the Squareback’s marine-grade fiberglass baseplate incorporates strategically placed rubber bumpers that also protect the paint from direct contact with the pan. Mustang’s premium expanded vinyl covers offer the appearance of soft leather with the durability and resistance to the elements that exceed OEM standards. The marinegrade fiberglass baseplates, proprietary comfort foam and individually hand-sewn covers are proudly handcrafted and assembled in their historic New England facility. ■

Sporting an optimized fit specifically for women, the figure-hugging Banshee is constructed using an anatomical stretch fabric main shell for added snugness. Featuring Level 1 CE-certified, slim-profiled knee protection, these leggings also have a special fiber lining for high levels of abrasion resistance. Riders can boost this level of protection even further with the addition of the Nucleon hip protectors, which are available as an upgrade. The leggings also incorporate reflective prints on the lower leg to make the rider more visible to other road users when riding in poor light conditions. ■

Müller’s Hydro Clutch Lightens Harley Lever Load

I

n late 2018, Harley-Davidson issued a recall for certain 2017 Twin Cam and 2018 Milwaukee Eight models due to the possibility that the hydraulic clutch may not disengage as expected. Harley dealers address the issue by installing a new secondary clutch actuator piston assembly. The Hydro Clutch by Müller Motorcycle offers owners of Harley models affected by this recall with an elegantly simple supplemental solution. It greatly reduces the amount of effort required to operate the clutch lever compared to the Original Equipment setup. Sometimes, motorcycle riding calls for frequent engagement and disengagement of the clutch or continual up-and-down shifting, such as traffic jams, parades

pull effort – 35 percent on Twin Cam models and 45 percent on Milwaukee Eight models! This reduced effort also can help riders make smoother and more precise clutch releases. The optimized clutch cylinder that makes this possible is super simple and maintenance-free. The Hydro Clutch is made of exceptional-quality high-strength aluminum and stainless steel at the Müller Motorcycle factory in Bavaria, where the company’s products are designed, engineered, tested and manufactured. The company’s focus on managing these processes themselves in the interest of quality, reliability and customer satisfaction seems to be well-founded, because many customers around the globe attest to the quality and functionality of the Hydro Clutch.

or twisty roads that frequently urge riders to search for just the right gear. Those conditions can lead to a degree of discomfort in the left hand, wrist and forearm from constantly applying pressure to the clutch lever. Some riders address the issue while on the roll with the left-hand-snap-shake-make-a-fist-and-open move, or at a full stop with a quick massage. That can help a little, but the discomfort can put a damper on their enjoyment of the ride. The Hydro Clutch offers greater potential for total riding comfort by enabling a significant reduction in clutch lever

An easy to follow instruction sheet is available for reference during installation. Harley styling purists also will be glad to hear that adding the Hydro Clutch does not alter the outward appearance of the bike. Customers can save a little money by having their dealer install the Hydro Clutch at the same time the clutch recall service is performed, because only a few additional steps and a little extra time is required. If installing the Hydro Clutch separately from the recall campaign work, the process takes about an hour. ■

Taking On Touring

A Century of Experience in Every Chain

R

egina celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2019, which means the Italian firm’s history predates the popularity of chain-driven motorcycles. Even so, Regina’s experience as a chain manufacturer extends back to when the company initially made freewheels and chains for bicycles. Decades later, when manufacturers like Moto Guzzi and Gilera needed chains for their new models, they turned to Regina. Since then Regina has collaborated with many greats. From legendary champions like Agostini, Bayliss, Hailwood, Rossi and Stoner, to renowned manufacturers like Aprilia, BMW, Ducati, Honda, KTM, and Yamaha, Regina has been at the forefront of motorcycling since the sport’s infancy. As the OE provider for numerous manufacturers and the chain of choice for many high-level race teams, Regina’s drive to improve its products’ quality and performance is unwavering. The latest results of the company’s efforts are aimed at the popular touring segment where large, powerful, and often heavily loaded motorcycles, rack up many kilometers on a variety of terrain, from the bumpy back roads of Bulgaria to the twists and turns of the Italian Alps. The Touring category has evolved to include bikes with Superbike-like power, which means that consumable components like tires, brakes and drive chains must offer exceptional performance and durability. Thankfully Regina’s Touring chains, designated ZRT, are up to the challenge. The Touring chains are offered in 520, 525, and 530 sizes to fit all of today’s Touring and Sport Touring bikes and feature attractive gold-colored link plates. This specially designed chain uses high-quality materials and processes to ensure maximum durability and mileage, all while providing extended lubrication intervals for uninterrupted riding pleasure. At the heart of the ZRT is Regina’s latest Z-Ring, which provides improved sealing and enhanced chain flexibility.

Regina’s Z-Ring has evolved to include a conically shaped inner surface for better sealing and internal lubrication.

This new seal represents an evolution of previous X-Ring and Z-Ring designs and is another example of Regina’s constant R&D efforts. The seal’s complex shape retains internal lubricants, seals out water and dirt, and provides 40 percent more chain life and 50 percent less drag than conventional O-ring chains. The patented Z-Ring is supported by such high quality components as high-carbon alloy steel bushings and rollers for maximum durability. Thicker side plates support higher tensile loads to suit today’s powerful machines, and the pins are quad-riveted for further strength and reliability. To further improve fatigue resistance the side plates, pins, and rollers are shot peened prior to chain assembly. The shot-peening treatment induces a residual compressive stress in the parts that strengthens the metal, which is especially important for components that are subjected to repetitive loads.

Regina’s new ZRT chains for heavy-duty Touring bikes are available as stand-alone chains, as well as kits that include the chain, and steel front and rear sprockets.

The Electronicbox is a main relay that support fundamental electrical functions such as lighting, the motorcycle’s horn, the ignition switch, the engine shutoff switch, even the neutral side-stand switch.

For the rear light, kits are available to convert the rear light between EU or US standards. For added conspicuity, customers can add the Brake 2 Flash module, which causes the brake light to flash when the brakes are applied.

Available in three versions – D, G, and H – the Electronicbox can be used with buttons or switches, and the support wiring inside the handlebar. Pair one of the Electronicboxes together with an Axel Joost Elektronik wiring harness to form the backbone of newly built, rebuilt or upgraded electrical systems.

Customers can also look to Axel Joost for help correcting well-known electrical issues of certain OE models. Owners of 2003 to 2008 Big Dog Motorcycle models can quickly and easily update the electrical system of their bikes with the Big Dog Electronic Harness Controller replacements.

Customers who want the convenience of a modern keyless ignition can choose from three Axel Joost Elektronik ignition switches that offer the ability to support remote starting and accessory lighting. Customized Control Rev2 Throttle Kits

A

custom-tailored throttle is something all riders can appreciate. Being able to adjust how much twist it takes to completely open the carbs or throttle bodies can give motocross racers, off-road riders, street riders and track racers the precise control they want. Motion Pro’s Rev2 throttle kits, the second-generation of this innovative reelchanging throttle system, offers exactly that. Available with both off-road and street-bike applications, Rev2 comes with five color-coded, interchangeable reels. Switching reel sizes determines how much twist is necessary for full throttle, each swap changing the twist by about 10-degrees. If an OE throttle has a 40mm reel and a stock twist of 90-degrees, a quarter-turn, a Rev2 45mm reel will reduce the twist to 80-degrees, the 50mm reel reducing it to 70 degrees and so on. Going the other way, a 35mm reel will increase the throttle twist to 100-degrees. Rev2 kits also include a progressive profile cam-reel, one for street, another for off-road. With the cam-reel there’s a sensitive, longer-twist throttle during part-throttle openings, a more aggressive short-twist throttle at the larger-throttle openings.

A sleek, cast-aluminum body houses all of this and allows easy reel swaps. The street-bike kits come with Motion Pro’s RoadControl™ grips and a street/road race throttle tube, the off-road kits have DirtControl™ grips and a Titan™ throttle tube. All the cables have PTFE liners, billet aluminum tool-less/in-line adjusters and boots to keep things clean. ■

etro styling is popular on Harley-Davidsons these days, and the Cherokee seat by LePera Motorcycle Seats adds a cool throwback look to XL Sportsters. But the seat was not designed in response to the retro trend, it has been a part of the LePera catalog since the company’s earliest days in 1972. The Cherokee seat was one of the first designs introduced by LePera, and although the classic King/Queen style was originally made only for FX/FLH models, these days it is available for a wide range of Harleys, including 2004-2006 and 2010-2019 Sportsters. Style is certainly one of the reasons for the Cherokee’s longevity, but so is the comfort level. The rider seating area is 26.5cm wide, and the bobbed and chopped lines mean that there is an ample amount of lower back support. The passenger seating area is 16.5cm wide. The Cherokee is made from a special high-density molded foam that gives both rider and passenger plenty of comfort for day trips. MOOSE RACING PIPE GUARDS BY E LINE Moose Racing pipe guards offer the most protection, style and durability on the market Custom-molded to fit perfectly every time Antiballistic composite material, fiberglass and high-temp resins yield an exceptional guard; 8 times stronger, 2 times stiffer, yet 1.5 times lighter than aluminum The level of exhaust pipe heat that can be reached by 4-stroke models can cause pipes to ding easily. This heat can also cause damage to expensive riding pants, so eliminate the hassle by installing a Moose Racing Pipe Guard Pipe guards distribute impacts over a large area; aluminum guards cannot duplicate this effect
