WE ARE DIGITAL!

W

ith this edition of Parts Europe Magazine we have officially converted our magazine production and distribution to a digital process. From this point on, all Parts Europe dealers will now receive the publication via email in your language of choice on file. So why the change? After 11 years of printing the magazine, we heard from the staff at Parts Europe that the readership would improve if it was delivered not only in English, but also in French, German, Italian

to handle the conversions of all the editorial text into the additional languages. Be sure to read more about the translation team starting on page 18. Information about other important people at the Parts Europe office who we work with can be found starting on page 12. That includes the technology they call “Hot Links.” You may have already used this technology with the Parts Europe catalogs and now we have the magazine connected as well. Click a part number in the issue and it will connect you straight to that vendor’s list of all the applicable part numbers that you can order for that item. Give it a try! Going digital was not about saving the cost of a print bill. As I mentioned above, we’ll spend just as much in other ways to make it happen. I know I am “old school,” but I actually still prefer books and magazines in print rather than digital when everything else is the same. There are so many situations where it is very handy to read and share printed publications, especially with Parts Europe Magazine so it can be handed out at races and trade fairs. We will, by the way, still print some copies for those uses, so print is not going away completely, at least not yet.

Welcome Fred Kodlin! Photo by Horst Rösler

and Spanish. Starting and stopping the presses to print in five languages would be cost prohibitive compared to one large print run. But digitally, it is less of a problem to output with varied languages and that was the main reason for the change. There are added costs involved in the translations of the editorials that will match what we save by not printing the magazines. It will now require a two-step operation where we will produce the master publication artwork at our publishing office in the U.S., then turn it over to the translation team at the Parts Europe headquarters in Germany

Lastly, we welcome to Parts Europe Magazine a veteran motorcycle builder who most of you probably know of – Fred Kodlin. For more than 35 years Fred has been an industry leader in Europe creating his now-familiar Fred Kodlin style for motorcycle customs. He and his son Len are now including some Kodlin products in the 2021 Parts Europe catalog. Please check out some of his past work and new products starting on page 50. ■

Wishing you all a

Happy New Year! Ride Safe!

NEWS EVENTS Adrien Van Beveren Celebrates Hail Baja Win VICTORY CAPS PREPARATIONS FOR DAKAR RALLY to win the stage a healthy 31 minutes ahead of the second placed finisher. Stage two provided Adrien with much different desert conditions. Faced with the rockiest stage of the Hail Rally, it was a welcome challenge for the Frenchman to navigate through slow, technical sections aboard the Yamaha WR450F Rally. Remaining composed throughout and following another untroubled ride, Van Beveren reached the finish line first to successfully complete his final race ahead of the Dakar Rally.

M

onster Energy Yamaha Rally/THOR rider Adrien Van Beveren won the second Hail Baja in December. With participation proving to be highly productive for the Frenchman, the event’s challenging terrain and technical navigation provided one last chance for Van Beveren to finalize the set-up of his Yamaha WR450F Rally ahead of the Dakar Rally this month.

“The second stage had very high speeds and I was completely comfortable, so this gives me a lot of confidence ahead of Dakar,” added Van Beveren after his win in December. “I will now take some rest for a week before getting ready for the big race in January.” ■

“It’s been a really great trip to these two races in Hail. It was a big effort to get here, so I’m thankful to the team that we were able to make it happen,” Van Beveren said. “My feeling on the bike is really good and I felt great in the desert.” With a race format similar to the opening Hail Baja, the second edition of the event was again comprised of two stages, with a slightly shorter overall distance of 491km. Opening the stage on day one, Van Beveren quickly put his navigational skills to work. With the stage set entirely in the demanding sand dunes surrounding the town of Baqaa, he accurately made his way through each checkpoint, going on Hail Baja 2 - 2020 Overall Provisional Classification (after stage 2): 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6)

Brent van Doninck Signs With Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing

G

ebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing has announced that Moose Racing rider Brent van Doninck has signed with the team for the 2021 season. The team has agreed to a deal with the Belgian talent for the 2021 MXGP World Championship campaign. The Belgian has a lot of GP experience having contested the MX2 World Championship for several years with Factory Kemea Yamaha, DIGA-Procross Husqvarna and Assomotor Honda. The 2020 season was van Doninck’s first season in the MX1 class on the 450cc and he spent the year mainly racing in the UK. “The Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha team is pleased to have signed a contract with Brent van Doninck for the 2021 season,” said team manager Klaas Hattem. “As a Yamaha supported team we are always looking out for young riders with potential and the right attitude. Brent has shown this at the last three MXGP races of the year. We really look forward to the 2021 season with great confidence.” Despite no time on the bike, van Doninck really impressed at the Arco di Trento triple header with overall finishes of thirteenth, ninth and tenth to outline the potential he has. With a full winter to prepare for the 2021

season he is one to watch out for on the Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha. “I am really excited about this deal. Gebben Van Venrooy give me the chance to ride the last three MXGP rounds in Italy and we were all very happy with my results. I know already that the bike is working very well, and I think it will only get better as soon as we start testing. I really cannot wait to start working with the team.” The 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship season kicks off in April with the MXGP of Oman in the capital city of Muscat. ■

NEWS EVENTS A Decade of Delivering Results PARTS EUROPE HONORS 10-YEAR EMPLOYEES

O

nce upon a time, there was a group of people who decided to found a company in the three-border region of Germany, France and Luxembourg. From the beginning, there were no plans that this company would stay small, after all it is one of the three distributors of the US-based LeMans Corporation. As well as its sister companies, Parts Canada and Parts Unlimited, Parts

Europe is now a leading wholesaler for aftermarket replacement parts and accessories for the powersports industry.

Today Parts Europe employs around 280 people at the headquarters next to Trier, Germany, and over 55 sales reps and country sales managers in the different European countries. This did not happen overnight. The first employees that helped build that fledgling company celebrated their 10th anniversary in 2020, and Parts Europe would like to offer that From left: group a big “Thank You”. The company Matthias Twelker, Christian says that none of its employees would Metzdorf and Jürgen Jäger be a part of such a great organization if those first workers didn’t believe in the idea of Parts Europe, and never stopped supporting the growth of the business. One of those first employees, Jürgen Jäger (Senior Systems Technician, Operational Technology) offered his own take on the milestone. “A fantastic journey started 10 years ago; let´s keep building the future,” he says. Celebrating the 10th anniversary with Jäger, is Matthias Twelker (Teamlead Purchasing), one of the most passionate bikers in the Parts Europe family, who is more than ever deeply pleased with working for and developing the company. “The international motorcycle business does not offer a more powersports-passionate place,” he says.

Nobody might know the Parts Europe building better than Christian Metzdorf (Facility Support, Operational Technology). While Metzdorf didn’t come to Parts Europe with a passion for motorbikes, he is slowly becoming part of the circle, and just proudly finished the 125cc license this year. The next group of employees was hired one month later, in October 2010. With the development and growth of Parts Europe’s business, there was a growing need for increased data transfer capabilities. As such, the company worked tirelessly to find experts to extend the data network. Marion Werdel was one of the first Navision Developers to come to Parts Europe and is still with the company. continued on page 14...

Anthony Damevin started in sales as one of the youngsters at the company, and then worked his way up the ladder. Now the Parts Europe Purchasing Manager, he celebrates 10 years of passionate experience and evolution. “[I’m] proud of the company development and excited about a future full of successes and opportunities,” he says. Mortimer Barten was hired as a Web Developer, and now works as Marketing Team Coordinator, a new position he took on in November 2020. Barten says he remembers how the company’s building looked back when he came to his first job interview. The building had already today’s size, but seeing the upper floor, there was only carpet and wide open space. Today there are roughly 50 employees sitting in the area he first saw 10 years ago. Another employee celebrating “10 years of positive development” is Hermann Hoffmann, the Parts Europe Shipping Officer. There are also a handful of employees who celebrated the 10th anniversary in 2019 – Manfred Leonhard (Finance Manager) and Larissa Petry (Sales CEE). Their official celebration took place during the popular Parts Europe open house event. Last but not least, Parts Europe says it would like to honor a person who is a central figure in the company’s history and growth, a man living in Hermeskeil, who has been loyal to Parts Europe from the first beginning. That man is Gunther Hildebrandt, Parts Europe’s Team lead Sales DACH and one of its most passionate Harley-Davidson connoisseurs. Parts Europe says that it offers these pioneers a sincere thank you and wishes for many more anniversaries for years to come. ■

NEWS EVENTS Language is the Key INTRODUCING THE PARTS EUROPE TRANSLATION TEAM

S

tarting in 2013 with only two members, the Parts Europe Translation Team has grown to five members in the last seven years, with two translators for German and one each for Italian, French and Spanish. Everybody is translating from English into his or her native language, and from time to time, the other way around.

All our translators at Parts Europe have graduated as technical translators, and native speakers with a main goal to bring the whole Parts Europe workforce closer together. As mentioned, much of the team’s work takes place in the background. Take note, translation is not merely translating words into different languages.

The team’s daily work includes the translation of the web shop and website content, flyers and sales programs, catalogs, internal information, press releases and now also the Parts Europe Magazine. For all those tasks, they work in close cooperation with other Parts Europe teams like Media Design, Marketing and Sales. As translators, they are used to, and like to, work in the background, true to the motto: “If you don’t recognize it as a translation, they are doing a good job.” And they certainly do a good job.

These word acrobats do not only take care of the accurate translation of product specifications or manuals, which require precision and technical knowledge. They also handle creative texts, such as ads or press releases, in which adapting the message to the readers of the target culture is the priority. By introducing the team, Parts Europe would like to take the opportunity to let the translators have their say. After all, words are their business:

“From the very first day, the company gave me the possibility to do what I like the most – building bridges between two cultures through words. The working environment also plays an important role. Being a member of the Translation Team means in the first place supporting and helping each other. Every day we face new and exciting challenges, growing as both professionals and human beings, with the ultimate goal of making our dealers successful. It never gets boring at Parts Europe!”

“Working with languages and the topic of motorcycles and powersports on a day-to-day basis is not just interesting, but also fun. You never really stop learning new things, even in your own language! That is why I am grateful for having joined the Parts Europe family more than five years ago. Along the way, I have always counted on the support offered by the various departments and especially by the Iberian (Spanish & Portuguese) sales team members whose dedication and team-work spirit I constantly appreciate.”

I

t would be hard to find a better classic bike than a Shovelhead in a hard tail frame. There are countless customs based on this theme, everything from your standard all-black builds to this unique blue machine. Parts Europe dealer Frantisek Binka and his team at FBI Motorcycles in Prachatice, Czech Republic, worked nine months on this custom bike project. All that hard work – and some help from the Drag Specialties FatBook – paid off when the team collected two prizes at the Czech Custombike Show in Brno in early 2020. Based on a Paughco single loop rigid frame, and inspired by old school Harley-Davidsons, this bike is clearly an original build. Started from raw frame, Frantisek and his team renewed the 1976 Harley-Davidson Shovelhead motor with all necessary new parts and detailing. ike what you see here? Cory Ness certainly does. We’re talking about this Milwaukee-Eight Softail completed by his custom crew in Dublin, California, USA and now gracing the cover of the 2021 FatBook.

Ness reminds us that the 2020 Drag Specialties FatBook featured a bright-red Bagger on the cover. This year, with Ness Enterprises tapped to build the cover bike, Ness decided to shake things up a little. A Softail, he thought, might be just the ticket. But not just any Softail, or at least not one you’d expect from this group of customizing legends.

WINTER 2021

Take a look at this Softail Sport Glide. Talk about shaking things up. Continuing down that road originally paved by the FXDXT T-Sport and Dyna Switchback, the Sport Glide was an interesting choice. Another quick-change artist from HarleyDavidson, it can be a pretty competent Softail-based touring machine that, in the blink of an eye, is able to shed its saddlebags and fairing and transform into a classic hardtail-style cruiser. Sort of a two-for-one deal.

From the MX foot pegs to the 10-Gauge Rockerbox Covers, Sidekick Air Filter and Black Retro Linkage there’s plenty of Ness detail. None of it’s limited to a Sport Glide, either.

In fact, it was those quick-change saddlebags, Ness says, that would determine if this bike would ever have its chance to make the FatBook cover. As cool and versatile as a Sport Glide is and with all it brings to the game – a Milwaukee-Eight engine, a redesigned frame and some pretty significant suspension upgrades – those side bags posed a challenge. Before any of the custom work could start Ness and his crew had to first assure themselves that those OE Sport Glide saddlebags could be remounted into a new, lower position. “To look right, at least to our eyes, those saddlebags had to come down at least a couple of inches,” Ness recalls. “And honestly, if we weren’t able to do that I don’t think we would’ve gone any further with this bike. We would have picked something else.”

Low-mounted and custom painted, the OEM saddlebags flank a Wernimont Designs 9-inch Long Shot Fender and LePera Kickflip Diamond-Stitch Seat.

A Matte Titanium color theme set by the wheels continues into the paint job by Mazz Custom. The ProBEAM headlamp leading the way comes from Custom Dynamics, Wernimont lighting brightens up the tail.

There’s performance to match the style. Suspension upgrades include Legends Air-A M-Eight Softail System in the rear, an AXEO 43 update for the inverted-style fork. Braking now includes Ness 6-piston calipers and Jagged Floating Rotors.

Those bags, obviously, found that new, lower position and the rest of the bike, Ness says, was designed and built around that one change. A theme quickly developed, too, one combining the Performance Bagger vibe so popular now with a look and feel of a traditional Softail custom cruiser. It was all tied together using lots of parts featuring a new mattetitanium anodized finish that Ness Enterprises is offering on a whole host of new products. In this instance, that stylish finish is featured on the bike’s lightweight “Y” Spoke titanium wheels, the Titanium MX foot pegs, the Titanium 10-gauge rocker box covers, the cam cover and lifter block covers, the pushrod tube kits, the Sidekick air cleaner, the transmission top cover, the mirrors and the grips.

It isn’t all Ness hardware making the custom difference, though. There’s plenty more from the FatBook, like the 9-inch Long Shot rear fender from Russ Wernimont and a LePera Kickflip seat. For suspension upgrades, front and rear, Ness added Legend Suspensions’ AXEO 43 for the Sport Glide’s new Inverted-style fork and an Air-A M-Eight system for the Softail’s mono-shock rear. The engine gets a breathing treatment thanks to the stainless steel Hi-Output 2-into-1 Short exhaust from Vance & Hines, as well as the company’s Fuelpak FP3. Speaking of stainless steel, have a look at the new Ness stainless Moto handlebar from Ness sitting atop 10-inch Method risers, “It seemed to go nicely with that Performance Bagger feel,” Ness explains. Ness notes that little things like material matching the stainless in the exhaust to the handlebars really make a difference in maintaining a theme throughout. For this build, that theme continues right into the new colors applied by Mazz Custom Paint. Take a look. That mattetitanium color and feel has been incorporated into the panels making up the multi-color finish featuring lots of Drag Specialties Blue. “We’re pretty happy with the way it all came out,” Ness says. “Nothing too wild, just subtle changes making an everyday usable and versatile bike better looking.” And, he could add, changes that make this bike more than ready to take its place on the 2021 FatBook cover. ■

Far from appearing overdone, all that matte-titanium presents a cohesive, thoroughly thought-out appearance. There’s a Ness fairing on the bike, too, as well as Ness brake calipers and floating rotors. “We used one of our Profile front fenders,” Ness adds, setting that piece in place using mounts pirated off the stock Harley fender.

Heavy-Duty Tubes and Tire Components

Drag Specialties’ new Premium heavy-duty inner tubes are 2mm thick, compared to a standard tube’s 1.2mm thickness. The added bulk makes them more durable and more puncture resistant.

T

ire components may not be all that exciting or glamorous compared to some other aftermarket parts, but without them, no one is going anywhere. And, when it comes to tires, customers expect quality and peace of mind, which is why Drag Specialties offers products like the new Drag Specialties Premium heavy-duty inner tubes (p/n 0350-0625). Drag Specialties designed these heavy-duty tubes with a full 2mm thickness, compared to a standard tube’s 1.2mm thickness. That added bulk makes them more durable and better able to resist punctures. The sturdy butyl/rubber construction adds to the longevity and resilience of the tubes, too. The tubes are available in the most popular sizes of 16 inches, 19 inches and 21 inches. Each tube comes packaged in the Drag Specialties Premium packaging, which is designed to highlight the quality of the product inside, and to look attractive displayed on the shelf. Drag Specialties also offers high-quality, durable tubes in standard thickness for rim sizes from 15 inches up to 21 inches. The list of available options includes custom sizes for extra-wide wheel applications, making these tubes an ideal choice for bike builders or customers who are upgrading to an oversized tire kit. Of course, Drag Specialties tubes are available with various valve stem configurations to fit most rim options. By offering a range of valve stem types, dealers can get exactly the right size and configuration to fit their needs.

Every valve stem needs a cap, and while the Drag Specialties tubes all come equipped with the standard black rubber cap, there are plenty of aftermarket options for upgrading the look of the cap. It might be the tiniest part that can be customized on a motorcycle, but it helps add to the overall style. Anodized stem caps offer a pop of color in various hues, and both chrome and black contrast-cut styles are designed to offer small but sharply detailed aesthetic upgrades. Drag Specialties has .38 Special valve stem caps for a truly unusual look. Drag Specialties rim strips help round out the setup for new tubes. These high-quality, heavy-duty rubber strips prevent the tube from being chafed by the spoke nipples, and the 10-pack box means they are an easy item to keep on hand in the shop. ■

CLUTCH PRODUCTS

Dirt Digger Clutches

Performance Plus for Off-Road Machines

Barnett’s Dirt Digger billet clutch baskets are a noted upgrade over the OE parts. They’re designed to ensure super smooth clutch operation and provide extended clutch life.

Whether it’s for racing, for recreation or for hard, heavy work the Dirt Digger Clutch Kits are serious clutch upgrades designed for serious clutch performance.

A

nyone putting an off-road motorcycle, ATV or UTV through its paces knows just how important a role the clutch plays in all that action. Racers, it almost goes without saying, can wear out an OEM clutch in a weekend. Recreational riders, while not quite as hard on the equipment, still demand a lot from a clutch. Any ATV or UTV filling a heavy-duty work role is going to need a heavy-duty clutch replacement sooner rather than later. Barnett has what all those riders need. A specialist in the powersport clutch business for more than 70 years, Barnett’s Dirt Digger clutch kits (p/n 1131-3497) and the steel-faced billet aluminum pressure plates (p/n 11320412) and super-duty/stainless-steel lined billet clutch baskets (p/n 1132-0431) to go with them are much more than just OEM replacements. Whether it’s for racing, for recreation or for hard, heavy work these are serious clutch upgrades designed for serious clutch performance. Barnett’s off-road clutch packages are designed to reliably transfer all the power off-roaders need, do it slip-free, with easily-modulated rider control and keep on doing it for a good, long while. It all starts with a Dirt Digger clutch kit, a clutch pack that features Barnett’s carbon fiber and Kevlar friction

materials. Included with this are precision-ground, tempered-steel drive plates and new, heavy-duty springs that are 10 percent to 15 percent stiffer than OEM. A Dirt Digger upgrade with its increased capacity offers a stronger, longer lasting clutch with positive engagement and every kit is checked for an exact stack height so it’s always an easy fit. As big an improvement that a Dirt Digger kit is all by itself – they’re a direct fit into the OEM basket – matching that Dirt Digger clutch pack with a Barnett billet pressure plate and billet clutch basket assures total performance. The pressure plates are machined from high-quality billet aluminum and feature a tempered-steel friction surface guaranteed to never wear out. The Barnett pressure plate also runs cooler than OEM units, lowering clutch temperatures and further extending clutch life. The billet clutch basket is equally feature packed. Replaceable stainless steel inserts ensure super smooth clutch operation, and custom machined oil-passage windows throughout the basket increase oil flow for added cooling and extended clutch life. ■

Built in Berlin

A Custom Club-Style Dyna

H

einzBikes got its start when owner Marc Schaumburg was building a custom Harley-Davidson and needed ultra-slim turn signals that would blend in with the lines of his bike. The HeinzBikes Blinker was born, as was a whole new business venture. In the years since then, Schaumburg has continued to build custom bikes, focusing mostly on club-style Dynas that always turn heads at rides and shows around Europe. The HeinzBikes Dyna Club-Style Gold Edition is a perfect example of the high level of detail that goes into every HeinzBikes custom. The inspiration for the build is actually the paint job. The style is still a rarity in Germany – HeinzBikes calls Berlin home – and it was a collaboration between Schaumburg and painter Roy. The gold and black represent the HeinzBikes colors, and there is a matching custom helmet to go with the bike.

HeinzBikes’ new custom, the Dyna Club-Style Gold Edition features a range of the company’s trick parts, including NANO Series LED turn signals up front and the NANO Series LED Winglet turn signals in the rear.

Up front, the classic Dyna quarter fairing leads the way, and it is paired with Wild1 Chubby1 T-bar handlebars. Big turn signals would have looked out of place on the clean lines of the bars, so the HeinzBikes NANO Series LED turn signals (p/n 2020-1825) come to the rescue. The LED lighting unit on each signal is smaller than a one-cent coin, but they shine bright for everyone to see. Available through Parts Europe in a black anodized or chrome finish, these are the smallest, brightest turn signals that HeinzBikes has ever created. The NANO Series LED Winglet turn signals might be tiny, but they’re big on illumination and style.

HeinzBikes NANO Series LED Winglet turn signals (p/n 2020-1866) provide the illumination at the back. For the Dyna Gold Edition, Schaumburg chose to use the black housings and the LED setup that includes run, brake and turn signal functions. There are also NANO Series Winglets that have a chrome housing, as well as LEDs that only operate as a turn signal. Like the NANO Series LED turn signals on the handlebars, these are plug-and-play lights that really clean up the lines of the bike. The Gold Edition is more than just a good-looking bike, of course. HeinzBikes has given the engine an overhaul, and added on a Screamin’ Eagle Stage III exhaust. The results? A bike that cranks out nearly 100hp. A Saddlemen Step-Up seat tops it all off, giving the rider a place to sit comfortably or do a little showing off. (If the crash cage around the Gold Edition looks a little out of shape, there’s a good reason for that!) Every detail of the HeinzBikes Dyna Club Style-Gold Edition was carefully considered, right down to the blacked-out engine parts and the motocross-style grips. ■

Believe it or not, that small attachment at the bottom of the brake lever is HeinzBikes’ NANO Series LED turn signal. They’re small, yet powerful.

Compliant Power

Activated Batteries for Europe’s New Regulation

L

ook to BS Battery for an exhaustive lineup of SLA factory-sealed and activated batteries for powersports, with fitments covering most motorcycle, scooter and ATV models from the last 10 years.

With the new European regulation on sulfuric acid handling and shipping, which goes into effect on February 1, 2021, BS Battery is ready to make sure dealers are compliant with its full “ready-to-use” range of batteries that don’t require any maintenance or acid handling. With the new European regulation on sulfuric acid handling and shipping, BS Battery is ready to make sure dealers are compliant with its full “ready-to-use” range of batteries that don’t require any maintenance or acid handling.

Regulation (EU) 2019/1148 prohibits the sale of sulfuric acid for batteries to the public throughout the European territory. The principle is to prevent the use of sulfuric acid (which usually comes in the form of a pack with the unactivated battery) for purposes other than charging and activating a battery. In fact, it will still be possible to sell batteries that are nonactivated and delivered with an acid pack, ensuring that they are only delivered and/or sold to the customer after being charged and activated by a professional, who will make sure that the battery is served to the customer in perfect condition. BS Battery has been developing innovative solutions of many kinds for several years, and the company’s “readyto-use” batteries have already built a strong reputation around the world. Designed specifically for powersports applications, SLA (p/n 2113-0754) and SLA Max (p/n 2113-0635) batteries offer plenty of benefits such as high performance, increased power, extended life, extreme vibration resistance and multi-positional fitment. What is just as important is that these SLA batteries are factory sealed and activated, meaning they are delivered charged and ready to use. By eliminating the need for any handling of sulfuric acid, these batteries are considered non-hazardous products and can be sold directly to customers. Approved as OE by many of the leading global motorcycle manufacturers, BS Battery has an extensive range of “ready-to-use” batteries. Parts Europe stocks 57 different sealed and pre-charged powersport battery types. Most dry and maintenance-free battery types have already been upgraded to SLA technology because it offers an increase in both performance and durability in addition to not requiring acid handling or maintenance. Now, with the new European regulation, BS Battery is in a perfect position to help distributors and their dealers to stay ahead and stay smart, taking them away from the increasingly unpopular complexities of dealing with battery styles that require filling with acid. BS Battery is able to ensure that every single battery is shipped after having been maintained, tested, recharged and under control all the time. BS Battery has charging options, too. Compatible with SLA and SLA Max batteries, the BS15 charger (p/n 38070463) optimizes lead acid battery power and life with microprocessor control, with no risk of overcharging. BA10 (p/n 3807-0464) is an automatic charger compatible with lead acid as well as lithium batteries. ■

BS Battery also has chargers that are compatible with SLA and SLA Max batteries.

Helmets, Gear and History Bold New Looks for 2021

T

o get where you are going it helps to know where you have been. That’s a lesson THOR has learned over many decades, and while 2020 served up challenges both on and off the track the stalwart off-road brand is looking to turn those bumps into jumps, by rolling the best of 2020 into new and improved equipment for 2021. The Reflex helmet (p/n 0110-7022) is available in a new set of graphics, putting a fresh look to this high-end lid that debuted last year.

THOR’s Reflex helmet in the new Cast colorway

This helmet is the result of years of research and development – in the lab and Supercross stadiums – as well as partnerships with safety organizations from across the globe. In addition to the typical expanded polystyrene (EPS) found in a helmet, the Reflex uses a relatively new technology called Koroyd, essentially a cross-sectional layer of tiny welded tubes. In the event of an impact, the tubes are designed to crush and absorb the energy. Crucially, the rest of the time when there is no impact, the tubes are lightweight and flow air better than the conventional EPS foam. An added layer of safety the Reflex is the MIPS technology – a plastic lining between the padding and the impact material that allows the helmet to rotate during a hit and lessen the chances of head injuries from shear forces. Quick release pull tabs allow the contoured cheek pads to pop out quickly, and the rest of the Reflex’s liner is also removable and washable. This helmet is available with a carbon-fiber or fiberglass-composite shell, and meets the ECE 22.05 Helmet Safety Standard. In tandem with the Reflex’s new Cast colorway, THOR’s lineup of Prime Pro racewear now offers a Cast graphic, combining modern themes with the Prime’s high-level mobility, ventilation, and comfort – this is high-end racewear and the choice of factory riders. The Prime Pro pant (p/n 2901-9193) continues in 2021 with the updated, lay-flat cinch on the side of the waist in addition to the ratchet system on the front of the pant. This allows more adjustability for riders of all shapes and sizes, and a Prime Pro Cast pant and jersey

stronger waistline to keep pants in place when accelerating while sitting down. For durability, the knee panels use internal Aramid fibers to reduce knee-brace wear, while premium-grade, full-grain leather is used on the inside of the knee. An interior hip pocket means a tiny bit of cargo can go along for the ride. The jersey (p/n 2910-6353) uses laser-cut holes for ventilation (same as the pant), minimal seams, and a taped collar and cuffs. THOR’s mid-line racewear, the Pulse lineup, was also redesigned at the end of 2020, using durable 600 denier in the seat and knees, combined with generous swaths of the same In-Motion fabric used across the Prime Pro line. The women’s versions of the Pulse jersey (p/n 2911-0209) and pant (p/n 2902-0266) keep the updated, athletic fit, and laser-cut ventilation holes have been added to the jersey for better cooling across the line. For spring 2021 the Pulse adds the 03 LE graphic treatment (p/n 2910-6376), a throwback to the “full mask” THOR logo worn by icons like Jeremy McGrath, Chad Reed and Grant Langston. The HZRD graphic is also new for spring of 2021, available in acid green or vibrant red. ■

intage motorcycles will never go out of style. Vintage tire technology, though, is something else entirely. The retro styling of a motorcycle, whether it is a true classic or a modern bike made in homage to the models of yesterday, needs a tire with the same retro look. The modern motorcycle rider, however, needs a tire that offers confidence in all riding conditions. Michelin proves with the new

This extra layer of strategicallyplaced belting means that the tire does not expand as much at higher speeds. The contact patch remains more constant at every speed, and the tire mileage gets a boost. The bias belt carcass design also increases cornering stability. The Michelin Road Classic features Michelin Silica Rain Technology (SRT). This technology uses a high proportion of silica in the rubber compound to ensure that tires warm up faster, even during cold-weather rides, and provide plenty of chemical grip. Originally developed for Michelin’s racing tires, this technology has found its way into road tires. Michelin says that the Road Classic has up to 50 percent more* wet grip than its predecessor for a new level of confidence in wet conditions.

Michelin’s new Road Classic tires provide your customers classic styling with modern tire technology, whether they’re on a true classic bike or a current retro modern machine.

hose warm summer rides are still a long way off. That is no reason to just sit around and dream of hitting the trails. Off-road riding during the colder months requires bundling up a little more, but with the right gear, it can still be a great time. Moose Racing helps riders get out and do what they love most, even on those days that are cold, damp and windy. This year, the Qualifier jacket and pants are the newest items that help riders stay comfortable in those less-than-perfect conditions. The XC1 family of gear has grown, too, and now includes the XC1 vest and glove. The Qualifier name is already familiar to Moose Racing fans since the brand has a jersey and pants with that same name. The new Qualifier jacket and pants definitely have the Qualifier family traits – while they are considered to be entry-level gear, each piece features quality materials and construction methods, attractive styling and thoughtful design details. The Qualifier jacket (p/n 2920-0638) and pants (p/n 2901-9177) are made from a high-denier polyester fabric that is wind resistant, water resistant and durable, all without being bulky. The jacket is a twoin-one design, with sleeves that zip off completely to create a vest for those days that are a little milder. A large, zippered back pocket provides the perfect spot for stowing the sleeves when they aren’t in use. Two zippered hand pockets add more options for storing odds and ends. A wind-resistant shell runs the risk of making things hot and steamy inside, so Moose Racing incorporated two front and rear vents as well as two zippered pit vents so that riders can choose the right amount of airflow to keep the jacket’s internal temperature just right.

Qualifier jacket and pants

When those vents are closed, the Qualifier jacket is designed to keep out any unwanted air. The double front zipper flap and adjustable cuffs cut off spots where cold air likes to sneak in, and the micro-fiber lined collar helps add to the insulation. Doublestitched seams add durability while the pre-bent ergonomic sleeves add comfort.

Retro-reflective graphic logos top everything off to add a pop of visibility. The zippered leg openings on the Qualifier pants make them easy to slide on over regular pants as well as boots. In addition to providing a guard against the elements, the pants also put a big focus on comfort. The pre-bent legs have spandex stretch panels in key areas to provide increased mobility, and the oversized knee area keeps the pants from being too binding. The three-point waist adjustment system makes sure that the pants fit just right. The Qualifier pants have ventilation, too, which has been carefully designed to ensure the most efficient airflow. Two hand pockets add to the features, and high-denier nylon inner panels add a layer of fortification inside the knees. Moose Racing has added the XC1 vest (p/n 2830-0561) to its lineup for those days that a rider needs a little bit more gear, but not the full coverage of a jacket. Like the Qualifier gear, the XC1 vest resists both water and wind thanks to the light stretch fabric of the shell. Inside, a polyester mesh liner wicks moisture away from the rider to keep

XC1 vest

things from getting too steamy. Moose Racing managed to pack a lot of zippered pockets into the XC1 vest, including two hand pockets, one chest pocket and one interior pocket. Other notable features include the soft lined collar and double-stitched seams for added durability. Keeping hands dry and comfortable in the cold months is important, too, so Moose Racing has the XC1 glove (p/n 3330-6180) to guard against wind and water. The polyester stretch backhand material does the job while still being lightweight. On the other side of the glove, a Clarino palm gives the rider maximum feel on the bars while helping manage moisture at the same time. Fingers benefit from the comfort features, too, including a precurved finger design for an ergonomic fit and outseam construction. Everything is topped off with sublimated graphics and an adjustable wrist closure. Off-road riders can find Moose Racing gear for every kind of weather, from the hottest of summer days to the inevitable rain and, of course, cold-weather gear. ■

The Jackrabbit Ape is a narrow, fixed riser bar that screams 1960s chopper. It will look right at home on just about any period correct ’60s chopper or Bobber. Straight wrist angles and a skinny stance combine with modern construction for an always classic look. The EZ Riders bar is a straight T-Bar that will be right at home on any classic chopper or club style bike. The EZ Riders feature high-strength, 1-inch tubing that’s been TIG welded for strength and appearance. The BMX bar works with a variety of different styles. Is your customer building a dirt tracker bike? Have them bolt this bar onto the stock risers and they’re ready to rip! How about that oh-so popular Club Style Dyna or FXR? This handlebar will look perfect bolted up to a set of tall 10-inch risers. It’s available in chrome or gloss black powder coat. LA Chopper’s Outlaw Z bars were designed with the narrow, rigid choppers of the 1960s in mind. It’s a super classic look that accepts risers and clamps for a 1-inch handlebar. Note that these bars are only drilled for internal wiring. Imagine this bar on a stretched out Panhead with a springer front end. The Reverse T-Bar would look great on a customer’s Bobber project. The bar’s unique appearance only adds to its appeal. Like all LA Choppers bars, they’re made in the USA, and are drilled for internal wiring and notched for throttle-by-wire applications.

f there is one thing that your customers know the brand LA Choppers for, it’s handlebars. The company makes a bar for just about any model V-Twin motorcycle, no matter the look or style.

One part of that wide range of handlebars is LA Choppers’ Old School lineup, we’re talking handlebars for builds based around those bikes that preceded the Twin-Cam, Evo and now Milwaukee-Eight. The lineup of bars is sure to complement those classic Panheads, Shovelheads and Sportsters. The Old School line consists of the Jackrabbit, EZ Riders, BMX, Outlaw Z, Reverse T-Bar, Window, Narrow Bourbon, and Narrow Z bars. All of the handlebars have a unique

For everything from a stock bike to a hardtail-choppers, the Window bar has a variety of uses. It’s clever design literally frames the road stretching out in front of a rider, thus the Window moniker. The Narrow Bourbon bar is the look many want for their classic sleds, or even a new Dyna, Softail or Sportster. It has a mitered bottom with bent 90-degree tops. The narrow bottom portion is designed to line up with the forks for a nice, clean look. Last but not least are the Narrow Z Bars. These handlebars have a similar styling to the Narrow Bourbon, but also have a mitered top. There are great looks for all types of bikes and include cutouts for wiring. ■

A Hands-On History

The Life and Bikes of Fred Kodlin

C

hances are good that you already recognize the name Fred Kodlin. Since he is one of the most high-profile custom bike builders in Europe, it’s hard to be a part of the European motorcycle scene and not know something about Fred and his company, Kodlin Motorcycles. Now that Parts Europe is carrying a range of Kodlin parts and accessories for Harleys, it’s time for a bit of a history lesson about the man behind the brand. Fred started Kodlin Motorcycles back in 1984 with the dream of creating custom bikes in a style that would be uniquely his own. Inspired by both American and European styles, Fred created not just one-off bike builds, but production parts and accessories, too, allowing any enthusiast to turn their own bike into a custom. The cutting-edge designs of Kodlin’s parts have always been paired with high-quality manufacturing. When you add TÜV approvals to the mix, customers are able to buy Kodlin Motorcycle parts with absolute confidence. When Kodlin Motorcycles was starting out back in the 80s, Fred knew that he wanted to build something different. In Europe at that time, that meant building Harleys. After Harley-Davidson introduced the EVO engine, the custom Harley craze really started to take off. Every year,

50

Fred would import hundreds of Harleys from the United States, customize them so that they had the distinctive Kodlin look, then sell them to customers all over Europe. Fred would love to add other manufacturers to his list of custom bike projects, but, he says, “Today we don’t have time for doing other stuff. We are so busy with Harleys!” It’s a good problem to have. Kodlin Motorcycles mostly focuses on Road Glide and Softail parts and accessories. Fred prefers to work with the latest models, and he always has an eye toward what’s coming from Harley in the near future. He says the Milwaukee-Eight bikes provide a perfect starting base for a custom, and the modern elements mean customers get a bike that is a dream to both look at and ride. Just as he has been since 1984, Fred is still the driving force behind Kodlin Motorcycles. He is quick to point out that he continues to be hands-on with the bikes. “What people don’t know is that I work every day in the shop,” says Fred. “I’m not in the office. I do painting, I do the welding, and so I am really into the customization. Every two years I build my own bike, and I build it 100 percent by myself. I enjoy building my bike and I enjoy riding my bike. I’m not just a seller; I’m a worker. I love my job.”

KODLIN MOTORCYCLES

This do-it-yourself attitude is nothing new. Back when he was a teenager, Fred built his own handlebars for his Zündapp Supersport. He went on to apprentice as a welder before earning a Master title in both vehicle construction and blacksmithing. Those skills get put to use constantly at Kodlin Motorcycles, where Fred still handles a lot of the fabrication. Fred’s son Len Kodlin proves that custom building is in the blood. Len actually got an earlier start than his dad, building his first custom bike when he was only 11 years old. Len welded his own frame and installed a 125cc engine and parts that he found sitting around Fred’s workshop. Len learned a lot about sheet metal work, welding and motorcycle electronics while he was growing up, then went on to earn his motorcycle mechanic Master’s degree. He works side-by-side with Fred at Kodlin Motorcycles, where he is involved with everything from overall design concepts to painting. Len also heads up the Mechanical Design Department, which engineers all of the Kodlin production parts.

Fred says that it is more than just style that sets his custom bikes apart from the competition. It is also the high level of detail that goes into a build, from the design of the individual parts to the way they are all assembled. “I’ve been doing this for thirty-six years now,” he says. “You go to a bike show or a Harley rally where there are hundreds of custom bikes, and you’ll see the difference. We spend so much time in details.” Fred has entered his custom bikes in shows across Europe and the United States, winning Best of Show honors and introducing his own fabricated innovations like hidden brakes and hubless wheels. Again following in his father’s footsteps, Len was part of the 2017 “Motorcycles as Art” exhibition at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip, entering a supermoto style Harley 750 Street. When the Kodlin men are not in the shop, they are out riding, of course. ■

The Future of Custom

Playing by the Rules, Looking Good

H

elping customers build a custom Harley-Davidson just got a little easier for dealers. Parts Europe is now stocking parts by Kodlin Motorcycles, a brand that is well-established as a trailblazer in the European custom bike scene. Headed by founder Fred Kodlin and his son Len Kodlin – both of whom are respected custom builders – the Kodlin brand gives riders effective solutions for turning stock Harleys into true oneof-a-kind rolling artworks, whether it’s something as simple as swapping out the turn signals or completely replacing the gas tank, the rear fender, the seat or the front fender. The Kodlin Breakout front cover gives that popular Harley-Davidson model an instant custom look.

One of the most notable features of the recently-introduced Kodlin parts are the E-marks and TÜV approvals that are part of the package. As Fred Kodlin notes, getting those approvals are expensive, but they send a strong message to riders about the quality of the part they are purchasing. “For us, it costs a lot of money to get the paperwork done and to get the parts legal on the road,” Kodlin says.

As motorcycling comes under more and more scrutiny from European authorities, ensuring that aftermarket parts are compliant is more important than ever. For Parts Europe, having TÜV-approved and E-marked products available is a way to help dealers provide quality, streetlegal parts to their customers, removing any worry that a part might not be able to pass an inspection. Builders like Kodlin know that the future of motorcycling is in following the rules while still creating parts that are unique. Some of his parts are now available from Parts Europe, and a few of the top sellers are expected to be the Kodlin Motorcycles lowering kit for Milwaukee-Eight models, turn signals for Road Glides and risers for Breakouts. The Kodlin lowering kit for M8 Softails (p/n 13041023) gives a bike a lower, leaner look with minimal fuss. There is no need to shorten the piston rod or shock, and the lowering kit comes complete with the needle bearing and detailed instructions for installation. The kit allows the bike to be lowered as much as 40mm to give the rear end a more streamlined style. A TÜV certificate completes the kit.

Kodlin handlebar risers for Breakouts fit the stock upper clamp and speedometer housing, making this swap as smooth as possible. They come in chrome or black.

Parts Europe will be stocking two turn signal designs by Kodlin, including the Elypse and bullet signals. The Elypse turn signals include a fitment for Batwing fairings. The E-marked turn signals made by Kodlin get their glow from LEDs, and they are compact but extremely bright. The housings, available in either chrome (p/n 2020-1926) or black (p/n 2020-1925), are CNC milled into a small shape with lines that fit in with the aesthetic of the bike much better than the stock signals. Because they use the OEM mount, the turn signals are easy to install.

KODLIN MOTORCYCLES

Parts Europe offers three different model seats from Kodlin Motorcycles, which is designed to fit with the Kodlin rear fender and OE fuel tank.

Kodlin’s TÜV-approved rear fender kit

Kodlin handlebar risers for Breakouts – one of the preferred models for customs – are already a popular part with customers, and they are the perfect starting point for a handlebar conversion. The risers fit the stock upper clamp and speedometer housing, making this swap as smooth as possible. The forged aluminum risers are available in a black (p/n 0602-1152) or chrome (p/n 06021153) finish, and a TÜV certificate is included for that extra peace of mind. Changing the seat, the gas tank, front fender and rear fender all together provides the most complete bolt-on custom look. There are three different Kodlin seats available. One seat fits with a Kodlin rear fender and tank combination (p/n 0806-0116), another seat fits the Kodlin rear fender and OEM tank (p/n 0806-0117), and the third seat fits with an OEM rear fender and Kodlin tank (p/n 0806-0118).

These fender strut lights are small, but mighty, and offer a super clean look for a bike’s rear end.

The gas tank for M8 Softails gives a stock bike an instant Kodlin vibe, and because it works with the OEM fuel pump, making the swap is simple. Each tank comes ready for painting. The front fender for Breakouts also arrives ready for painting, with no filler work required. The one-piece fender is constructed from raw steel for smooth, clean styling. To complete the look, Kodlin also offers a TÜV-approved rear fender kit (p/n 1401-0744) for Breakouts. Additional Kodlin parts available from Parts Europe include a Breakout front cover (p/n 0411-0183), fender strut adaptors (p/n 2020-1923) and fender strut lights (p/n 2020-1933), which are E-marked. ■

More Sizes for Four Tire Models

D

unlop is kicking off the new year with additional sizes for four of its tire lines, giving customers more options whether they want to go on a sport leisure ride, an adventure or just get around town. Dunlop has grown the size availability for the SportSmart Mk3, Mutant, Trailmax Mission, and ScootSmart so that riders have an even bigger selection to choose from. The Dunlop SportSmart Mk3 is now produced in an additional rear tire size (160/60 ZR 17) for sport and touring riders. This hypersport tire is especially adept for sporty riders, and this version features increased mileage and enhanced all-around performance. The SportSmart Mk3 (p/n 0302-1320) has a new compound blend, and while the blend boosts performance in both the dry and wet, it really shows off on wet surfaces. The compound is paired with an innovative new tread pattern that improves handling, warm-up and water evacuation. Another way the SportSmart Mk3 tackles the wet is with the high surface-area silica, which increases grip for both outstanding wet performance as well as higher mileage. The front tire design of the SportSmart Mk3 gives riders better steering capability and feedback. In all, Dunlop designed the SportSmart Mk3 to be a hypersport tire that inspires confidence with excellent handling, grip and longevity in all weather conditions. The Dunlop Mutant (p/n 0302-1457) is a true crossover tire that can provide all-season, all-roads versatility to over 370 different bike models, whether it is an Adventure, Sport Touring, naked, retro, or scrambler bike. Already a popular choice for bikes like the BMW R1250 GS, KTM 1290 Super Adventure and Triumph Tiger Explorer, the Mutant is now available in two new rear tire sizes (150/60 ZR 17 and 160/60 ZR 17).

that have been designed to operate in the toughest of climates, including harsh winter conditions. In fact, the Mutant has an official “M+S” rating, meaning it is highly suited for challenging conditions. Even on cold, wet days, the Mutant still offers outstanding grip and handling as well as shorter warm-up times. The Dunlop Trailmax Mission (p/n 0316-0399) is really getting an increase in availability in 2021, with six new sizes now available for customers who want an Adventure tire that offers both on-road performance and off-road competence. The Trailmax Mission is Dunlop’s answer to Adventure riders’ repeated requests for a true 50/50 tire that provides performance and grip on any surface as well as excellent mileage. The Trailmax Mission’s aggressive tread pattern and all-new compounds strike the perfect balance between off-road traction and street performance. Dunlop’s Staggered Step tread blocks give the side knobs more rigidity while creating more biting edges. This ensures that even as the tread wears down, there is still plenty of traction. In addition to the tread’s outstanding performance on hard terrain, the wrap-around lugs on the edge of the tire provide a layer of protection against sharp rocks while also boosting traction. The tread design enhances

When Dunlop says that the Mutant is a crossover tire, the company means it – the Mutant has the handling and stability of a hypersport tire, the wet capabilities of a rain racing tire and the durability of a touring tire. The distinctive tread pattern combines aggressive-looking blocks with a dynamic directional design. This distinctive look has echoes of supermoto and dirt track tires, which means the Mutant offers both style and performance. All of the engineering and innovation that went into designing the Mutant is called “4 Seasons technology.” Intended for all-weather riding, this technology includes a mix of ply material, construction and compounds

For example, the ScootSmart has an innovative tread design that is inspired by the Dunlop RoadSmart tire. The tread helps the tire maintain its performance characteristics longer. BATTERY CHARGERS

P R O D U C T

S H O W C A S E

Ready to Run

Powerful, All-Around Battery Chargers

G

one are the days when an experienced technician could listen to the motor run, figure out what’s wrong, adjust a few things and presto, the engine is running smoother

These days troubleshooting and tuning is done via diagnostic link between computer and motorcycle, and usually without the engine running. It works great until the motorcycle’s battery runs out of power. If a technician or customer is in the middle of uploading a new ignition/ fuel map to the ECU, a low battery interruption can create a time-consuming problem to resolve. During troubleshooting some diagnostic tools show an error code if the battery voltage is too low. That’s where the OptiMate 7 SELECT (p/n 3807-0396) for 12V lead-acid batteries, and OptiMate Lithium 4s10A (p/n 3807-0487) for Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries can make a difference and save valuable time. Both have a power

OptiMate 7 SELECT and OptiMate Lithium 4s 10A have up to 10 Amps available, smartly controlled by the AmpMatic program that adjusts charge current according to the battery’s size and condition – smaller batteries get less Amps, bigger batteries get more Amps. The OptiMate 7 SELECT’s two charge modes – 14.4V for most lead-acid batteries and then 14.7V for premium AGM batteries – guarantees any 12V lead-acid battery will be correctly charged. The rest is easy and typical OptiMate; hook it up and no further supervision is required. Both OptiMate power chargers will deliver the right charge to the battery, and they will even save a dead-flat battery from as low as 0.5 Volts and then confirm the recovered battery’s state of health after charging has been completed. They can also be used to maintain a battery 24/7, 365 days a year, irrespective if that battery is in a vehicle stored in a hot warehouse, or it is in a bike out there in the cold.

The OptiMate 7 SELECT battery charger is an all-around performer that can save a dead-flat battery and just as easily rapidly charge an operating battery thanks to its AmpMatic program.

support mode that provides a stable 13.6V with 8 Amps available, quite sufficient to keep the battery charged and provide power to vehicle electrical circuitry during diagnosis or troubleshooting. The OptiMate 7 SELECT and OptiMate Lithium 4s10A can also charge batteries fast and safely. Often a motorcycle in for service has a battery in bad shape and needs to be recharged before the service can commence. Or, there may be a motorcycle in the showroom with an eager customer standing by, only for the battery to be too flat to start the engine. Both OptiMate power chargers are compact, light and fully sealed, and can easily be transported and used anywhere there is a battery to be charged.

With built-in temperature compensation, the OptiMate 7 SELECT automatically adjusts the charge voltage according to ambient temperature, guaranteeing the battery will never be over or under charged. OptiMate’s maintenance program delivers a desulphation pulse that continues to improve battery condition the longer you leave it connected. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries require a different kind of temperature compensation when charged in extreme temperature conditions, and the OptiMate Lithium 4s10A adjusts charge current lower if the ambient temperature is below 0°C or above 45°C, guaranteeing that the lithium battery will receive the right charge at any temperature.

OPTIMATE

The OptiMate Lithium 4s 10A is designed exclusively for Lithium batteries and can be used for quick-charging a dead battery, or providing year-round maintenance charging.

With any of these OptiMate products charging a battery, you and your customers can rest assured that once that charger is connected, there will be no battery problems. OptiMate 7 SELECT and OptiMate Lithium 4s 10A are also true green chargers that are very efficient to operate. They feature sophisticated industrial-level technology such as power factor correction and synchronous rectification that actively

reduce power consumption by more than 50 percent. The OptiMate 7 SELECT and OptiMate Lithium 4s10A are now delivered in eco-friendly packaging, and no longer feature single-use plastic. â–

J.W. Speaker’s Adaptive 2 Series headlights feature a host of advanced electronics that determine lean angle in real time, and illuminate a bank of LED lights that light up the dark corners on the road.

illumination fills the space a stock headlight doesn’t reach when cornering. It’s not just about a brighter beam thrown farther ahead; it’s about putting the right amount of light where it’s needed.

It’s as simple as that. As a bike leans, the Adaptive 2 Series headlights activate LED lights that shine into the corners.

The science is important, it makes the improved visibility possible, and it eliminates the need for riders to simply hope for a clear corner ahead. What makes the Adaptive 2 Series headlights even more valuable? Solid construction and a wide range of fitment options.

W

e are bombarded with science, engineering and technology today. That’s a good thing, whether we’re talking about medicine or motorcycles. Science and technology can help solve a range of problems. In fact, science can help your customers ride with more confidence, especially when threading through twisty roads. Good visibility is vital for all motorists, and especially for motorcycle riders. Statistics show that the hours between 6 p.m. and midnight can be the most precarious for motorcycle riders; the night sky is only one reason for this, but darkness can make riding more difficult. With the Adaptive 2 Series headlights (p/n 2001-1422) from J.W. Speaker, motorcyclists enjoy improved visibility in any riding situation, but especially when cornering. Using on-board sensors and advanced electronics including gyrometers, the Adaptive 2 Series headlights determine a motorcycle’s bank angle in real time. With that data, the individual LEDs in the headlight illuminate as needed, sending light into the rider’s direction of travel. Those well-positioned LEDs aim the headlight’s beam – low or high – illuminating the roadway, ditch-to-ditch, as the bike moves through the corner. This increasing

With a heavy-duty die-cast aluminum housing, the Adaptive 2 Series LED motorcycle headlights are built for long life. That stout, finned housing helps keep the light cool. The state-of-the-art LEDs don’t produce much heat compared to a traditional headlight. Plus, the headlights include models that fit lots of your customers bikes, with plug-and-play wiring setups to replace 18cm (7-inch) and 14.5cm (5.75-inch) headlights, including pedestal-mount applications. The Adaptive 2 Series headlights are motorcycle-specific designs, not just repackaged automotive lights. Fitment is broad across the Harley-Davidson model line, as well as metric manufacturers including BMW, Ducati, Moto Guzzi and Triumph and more. J.W. Speaker added its ComfortLite® high beam technology to the Adaptive 2 Series lights, increasing the effective lumen output by more than 50 percent while directing illumination above the horizon as well as down the road. For 85 years, J.W. Speaker Corporation has designed and manufactured high-performance vehicle lighting products from its headquarters in Germantown, Wisconsin, USA. For your street-bike customers, the Adaptive 2 Series headlights deserve a closer look. The science is real and greatly improves visibility, allowing riders to see and be seen. ■

Forging a Future

Big Updates for High-Performance Pistons

A

ny company that wants to make a premium product needs to begin with high-end production facilities and materials. Wössner has long held this view, putting a strong emphasis on inhouse forging and manufacturing to ensure the utmost quality. The German company knows that it is not enough to simply build a nice facility and call it finished – it is also important to continue making improvements to stay up to date with the latest in technology.

In addition to its German headquarters, Wössner also has its own 5,000-square-meter forging facility in Italy so that the piston forging process can be carefully controlled to ensure quality and accuracy. After forging, the pistons are sent to Weil am Rhein for processing and finishing. Before these pistons can even be produced, though, they have to be designed. By using modern 3D design technology, the pistons are optimized for premium performance

Wössner recently moved into a brand-new headquarters in order to keep up with the worldwide demand for its products. This new facility will allow Wössner to produce about three times the number of pistons annually compared to the previous facility.

Wössner began as an importer and distributor of pistons, but the best way to ensure quality, precision and performance is to make them in-house, where it is easy to oversee every step of the process. Wössner has been producing high-performance forged pistons since the 1990s, and more recently, the company moved into a brand-new headquarters in order to keep up with the worldwide demand for its products. This new facility in Weil am Rhein, Germany, is larger and more modern than its predecessor. The increased size and updated technology allow Wössner to produce about three times the number of pistons annually compared to the previous facility. Making such a big upgrade is no small undertaking, and Wössner has invested 7 million euro during the past two years, ensuring that the new headquarters and machinery are state of the art. In addition to manufacturing, Wössner’s global headquarters is also where the company conducts ongoing research and development. Currently, the company is focusing on developing performance kits for off-road racers.

and a perfect fit. This innovative spirit allows Wössner to continue exploring the possibilities of forged pistons. Parts Europe distributes a number of Wössner off-road engine components, including complete piston kits (p/n 0910-4927), connecting rods (p/n 0923-0563) and individual items such as piston ring sets, wrist pins, main bearing kits and needle bearings. Products such as the high-performance forged premium 2-stroke and 4-stroke piston kits come with everything required for installation to make it easier for both the dealer and customer. Wössner’s lightweight pistons are precisely measured and manufactured to provide the tightest piston-wall clearance possible, which results in an engine that runs quieter. Standard and oversize piston sizes are available for most off-road models, and high-compression ratios are available for 4-stroke applications. The 4-stroke pistons are constructed using a double-bridged forging design for additional strength and durability. Piston ring sets, wrist pins and circlips can also be ordered separately. the extensive list of applications, including a lot of oldermodel motorcycles. Wössner also produces high-quality main bearing kits and needle kits. The main bearing kits include precision-made bearings. Wössner connecting rods are designed to fit OEM bearing and crank pins. They can be paired with the corresponding Wössner piston kit for even more of a performance enhancement. The applications are for the connecting rod only, and they fit a wide variety of off-road models. ■

Style for Miles

Premium Parts for a Custom Look

H

arley-Davidson motorcycles are world renowned for their unique style, but few riders are satisfied with a stock bike. For those customers who want to make their Harley stand out, THRASHIN Supply has the parts to customize new or older Sportsters, Dynas, FXRs and Softail models to make them fit their style and needs.

Mid Bend bars

For example, check out the 2019 Street Bob in the ad opposite this page. It’s a gritty, stripped-down Bobber from the factory, but with a handful of easy to install parts from THRASHIN Supply it’s now an eye-catching custom with function and flash. It starts with 20.5cm Straight Risers (p/n 0602-1048) to put the grips in the perfect position. Making the bike fit the rider is the foundation of any build, and THRASHIN offers 15cm and 20.5cm Straight Risers as well as 16.5cm and 24cm pullback designs that work on Harleys dating back to the late 1980s. THRASHIN’s top clamps are angled at 35 degrees for both straight and pulled back risers, which gives the parts a streamlined look as well as a more relaxed feel.

Essential saddlebags

The other part of the equation for this Street Bob is a set of THRASHIN’s premium Mid Bend bars (p/n 0601P-54 footpegs 4143), which have a 10mm rise and mild sweep. THRASHIN also offers the High Bend with a 14cm rise while the Low Bends have an aggressive 64mm of rise. Combined with the risers, THRASHIN’s bar options provide a variety of height combinations to suit any rider or bike. All THRASHIN bars feature a keyway on the right end to accept the fly-by-wire throttle on modern Harleys and have radiused windows on the underside of the bar to make routing wiring easier.

compact and covert bags offer storage without bulk and look great on Dynas, Sportsters, FXRs, and Softails like this Street Bob. The bags are made from the same durable 1680-D nylon as the Handlebar Bag, and have enough structure to hold their shape when empty. Measuring in at 22.8cm x 10cm x 12cm, the Essential Saddlebags have an easy on, easy off design.

To add some convenient storage, your customers can strap a Handlebar Bag Plus (p/n 3510-0102) to their risers like this Street Bob rider did. Made from durable 1680-D ballistic nylon and measuring in at a compact 229x127x102 millimeters, the Handlebar Bag Plus keeps crucial items like cash and a cell phone close at hand. It’s got four interior pockets for organization, plus a microfiber-lined pouch to ensure your customers sunglasses are protected.

Finishing off this stylish Street Bob are THRASHIN’s standard P-54 footpegs (p/n 1620-1758) up front and the P-54 slims (p/n 1620-1762) out back, plus a matching Shifter Tip (p/n 1603-0332). The P-54s are a grippier and much better looking alternative to stock Harley parts, and feature an adjustable clevis to fine tune the angle to the rider’s liking so they work well whether mounted as forward, mid, or passenger pegs. ■

For more cargo capacity, your customers can turn to THRASHIN’s Essential Saddlebags (p/n 3501-1421). These

Weathering the Storm

Waterproof Gear for Rain and Snow

Icon’s new Stormhawk gear is a great complement to the Tarmac 2 boot. The jacket and pants are both waterproof, and feature a full set of D3O CE-Certified armor.

W

hile it is doubtful that anyone really enjoys riding in the rain, the truth is that riding in wet conditions doesn’t have to be a miserable experience. It all comes down to having the right gear for the weather. Icon gets riders rain-ready with the Stormhawk waterproof jacket and pants, plus all of the other gear necessary to stay dry from head to toe. The Stormhawk set features Icon’s Waterproofing Level 3, the top weather rating that the brand offers. That means the gear will go to battle – and win – against heavy rain and wet snow. Outside, the four-way stretch textile is flexible but sturdy. Underneath, a waterproof and breathable HYCOR membrane ensures that water stays out without things getting too hot and steamy inside. For abrasion resistance and to guard against possible bumps and bruises, the jacket also features internal 600d polyester fabric reinforcements and a full set of D3O LP1 armor. This latest iteration of D3O armor features increased durability while continuing to offer superior impact protection, a low profile and a light weight. That means gear isn’t bulky or stiff, but riders are still well guarded. The D3O LP1 armor is highly vented, offering a 45 percent improvement in breathability compared to the previous version. That adds to the light weight as well as the rider’s ability to stay cool.

The Stormhawk jacket (p/n 2820-5349) has D3O LP1 armor in the shoulders and elbows plus a D3O Viper back impact protector. The full-length insulated liner is removable, and the large front and back vents can be controlled with waterproof zippers for additional temperature management. The jacket can attach via a zipper to the Stormhawk pants (p/n 2821-1246), which Icon designed as overpants so that they easily slide on over a rider’s regular pants. The full-length inseam zippers make getting in and out easy, and the removable suspenders offer a little extra bracing to make sure everything stays in place. The Stormhawk pants feature D3O LP1 armor in the hips and knees. Both the jacket and pants include generous pockets with waterproof zippers and reflective hits to make the rider more visible. Color options include black and tan. Of course there is no point in having a dry body if your feet and hands get wet. Icon’s waterproof gear includes items like the Tarmac boots, which have a street sneaker look but all of the motorcycle and weather considerations one would expect in a boot from Icon. Raiden gloves are waterproof and insulated to keep hands warm on those cold, rainy days. ■

HELMETS

Full Coverage

Full-Face and Modular Helmets

The Jackal full-face helmet is designed to give riders an ideal combination of airflow, quiet and comfort. The shell of the Jackal is aerodynamically shaped for a quiet and stable ride.

Fans of modular helmets should check out Z1R’s Solaris helmet range. The helmets provide the coverage of a full-face helmet but the convenience of an open-face helmet.

Z

1R has a complete range of helmet options for street riding, and for riders who prefer complete coverage, the company offers both a full-face and a modular helmet. The Jackal full-face and the versatile, all-weather Solaris and Solaris Scythe modular helmets feature ECE approval, aerodynamic shells and carefully engineered venting channels as well as extra perks like drop-down sun visors. From sunny summer days to the inevitable rainstorm, these helmets make riding in any situation a breeze. The Jackal full-face helmet (p/n 0101-10800) is designed to give riders an ideal combination of airflow, quiet and comfort. The shell of the Jackal is aerodynamically shaped for a quiet and stable ride. Chin and top vents enable air to flow through channels in the multi-density EPS liner. Up front, a scratch-resistant, anti-fog face shield and interchangeable drop-down sun visor ensure a clear view whether it is nighttime or a bright day. The liner is fully removable and will help wick moisture away from the rider’s face. Customers can choose from three different solid colors plus graphics options to get a look that matches their style. The Kuda graphic features a gloss black base, while the Avenge design starts with a matte gray shell.

Z1R offers the Solaris modular helmet (p/n 0101-10032) for riders who want the coverage of a full-face helmet but the convenience of an open-face helmet. The injectionmolded polycarbonate shell has an aggressive shape to add both style and aerodynamics. The shield and inner drop-down sun visor combine to make day-to-night riding simple, and temperature management is achieved with closeable chin and forehead vents, which channel air to rear exhaust vents for optimal cooling. Like the Jackal, the Solaris has a moisture-wicking liner and cheek pads that can be removed and washed to keep things fresh. One of the most notable features of the Z1R Solaris is that a breath box, dual shield and electric shield can all be installed to make it a year-round helmet. Those options are ideal for riders who are out in very cold temperatures and even snow. Z1R offers the Solaris in a range of matte and gloss solid colors, and riders who want an extra pop of style can opt for the Solaris Scythe. This graphic is available in six different color combinations. ■

The Smart Way to Complete a Big Job

WIRING HARNESSES

Harnessed Wiring

NAMZ aims to take some of the pain and suffering out of wiring up a new custom motorcycle build or rewiring an existing Harley-Davidson model. Its range of complete bike harnesses feature OEM color-matching wiring and every other needed component to get the job done right.

C

ompletely rewiring a motorcycle is a big, complicated job. It doesn’t matter if it’s a custom-build getting its wiring for the first time or it’s an existing-model Harley-Davidson in need of full rewiring – either way it can seem overwhelming. Granted, when you gather together all the right schematics and everything needed to get the job done, a motorcycle can be completely rewired with a neat, organized, fully functional installation the result. However, it’s going to take a pretty talented individual and a lot of time to accomplish that. There’s an easier, better way to approach this job. A NAMZ Complete Bike Harness, a full wiring harness with everything included that takes all the work, worry and parts searching out of a rewiring job. Not only is it assembled using Harley-Davidson OEM color-matched wires, it comes with every circuit, switch, module and connection that the motorcycle will require. NAMZ has taken all the planning work and component searching out of a wiring job. Everything is included and there’s a full-color schematic and easy-to-follow instructions. There are a couple plug-and-play NAMZ harnesses to choose from. A basic wiring layout (p/n 2120-0973) comes

with all the OE color-matched wire in the right gauges and lengths, along with all the fuses and fuse blocks, a charging-circuit breaker, a full-size starter relay, a 30-Amp circuit breaker, and all the wiring and terminals for the lighting system. There’s even oil pressure, neutral position, high beam and turn-signal indicator wiring. Everything is included so there’s no guess work needed. The harness features 12-gauge power and ground cables with terminals for the battery connection, and NAMZ includes sections of various sized heat-shrink tubing to keep the installation safe and neat. A second full harness (p/n 2120-0769) comes with everything as described above plus a self-cancelling runbrake-and-turn module and all of its wiring. The module allows run-and-turn lighting for the front and run-braketurn for the rear. There’s also a Sportster-specific harness (p/n 2120-1018) that looks just like the original XL wiring, but has been updated to perform even better. NAMZ also has a lot of partial harnesses available to neatly add custom lighting and accessories to an existing system. ■

» Motorcycle wiring can be intimidating. A NAMZ plug-and-play

harness can erase all those worries. Talk with your Parts Europe sales rep for details and visit www.namzcustomcycleproducts.com.

GOGGLES

Vision Evolved

Goggles with Refined Fit and Function

A

s is true with many things in life, riding gear can seem quite simple on the surface, but reveal many layers of complexity when peeled back. Goggles are a great example of this. Some riders may choose to wear a certain piece of gear while others don’t, but almost every offroad rider wears goggles. Goggles are typically the last thing riders put on, with no additional thought about critical protection, function and comfort.

THE ACCURI 2

The crew at 100% understands the layers of design, form and function that must be executed to create visual equipment that delivers on all fronts. 100% is a brand deeply rooted in motocross, and its experience and passion has led to the creation of a new generation of goggle, simply dubbed Generation 2.

RACECRAFT 2

The Generation 2 line of goggles consists of an encore of three models – the Strata, the Accuri and the Racecraft. One of the most important functions a goggle can serve is vision, and all three of these new models serve up a larger vertical field of view over their predecessors. Comfort and fit are things riders may not realize are lacking in a goggle, yet they can make a substantial difference. All three Gen 2 goggles received improved nose fitment complemented with plush, thermoformed, triple-layer face foam that accentuates comfort while simultaneously soaking up moisture. Your customers will see clear convenience with the Strata 2, Accuri 2, and Racecraft 2 because all three utilize interchangeable lenses secured with a nine-point retention system. These lenses all accommodate triple-post tearoffs and are constructed of anti-fog coated polycarbonate, creating a winning combination of protection and vision. The three Gen 2 goggles share a list of features achieving comfort, function and vision, but what’s the difference between each model? With the Strata 2 (p/n 2601-2934), 100% set out to reimagine what an entry-level goggle should be. The company believes elevated performance and protection shouldn’t cost a fortune, and your customers will appreciate the wide range of color combinations and lens choices all within a wallet-friendly price range.

STRATA 2

The Accuri 2 (p/n 2601-2820) offers additional performance features at a great value. At 5mm larger than the Strata 2, the 45mm strap on the Accuri 2 provides more surface area for grip. This model is available in a plethora of colorways, each coming standard with a mirrored lens and separate clear lens. The Racecraft 2 (p/n 2601-2904) offers the most enhanced rider experience of the Gen 2 lineup. A balanced fit and feel is achieved with a dual-injected, wide outrigger frame design, allowing the lens to sit naturally without unwanted torsion from the strap. Additionally, a removable nose guard gives riders adaptability for additional protection. The Racecraft 2 is offered in a range of colorways from flashy to simple, all provided with a mirrored lens, additional clear lens and a pack of tear-offs. ■

Specialty Tools for Milwaukee-Eights

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

Tech Helper

The oil pump alignment tool from JIMS is designed to help one person assemble the cam chest on a Milwaukee-Eight engine.

W

hile working as a machinist in the aerospace industry, Jim Thiessen developed a knack for fixing motorcycles with high-quality parts. By the late 1970s he was fully dedicated to serving V-twin customers, and ever since then there has been no job too large or small for JIMS ingenuity. In addition to tackling those jobs, JIMS also offers a big range or tools and accessories that help doing so easily and efficiently. The company has both your revered service techs as well as your skilled DIY customers in mind when it develops products. On the topic of big jobs and handy products, JIMS is now offering a set of hardware organizers (p/n 3850-0228) for Milwaukee-Eight engines that are made from 13-gauge aluminum-magnesium alloy. The four stands can be ordered as a set or individually – one each for top end, cam chest, transmission and primary – and are indexed to hold each piece of hardware during disassembly.

Another handy new tool is JIMS’ new oil pump alignment tool (p/n 3801-0398), which helps assemble the cam chest on Milwaukee-Eight engines properly. One mechanic taking on the job means making sure the cam support plate correctly interacts with the oil pump, gerotors, pump cover and pinion shaft, while aligning the O-ring in the crankcase. This process is a lot to juggle, and the alignment tool is a perfect aid for technicians and home mechanics to tackle the job single-handedly. They assemble the pump as individual components with the supplied studs, or as an assembly with the alignment tool to save time and money. ■

» For more information on JIMS parts, tools, and accessories talk to your Parts Europe representative and go to www.jimsusa.com.

The stands are a great solution for keeping all the hardware organized during powertrain assembly, teardown and storage. Because keeping a work area tidy is paramount to most techs, the stands neatly nest to save space. A new magnetic storage feature helps capture slip-fit dowels, and the stands nest within each other for efficient storage. Flip the stand on its side to apply thread lock when reassembling, or check the silkscreened info on top for commonly used torque specs.

With a set of JIMS’ hardware organizers, techs can keep the full complement of hardware for a top end, camchest, transmission or primary organized and ready to install after the work is done.

A Lowering Kit for Milwaukee-Eight Models

W

erner Müller began designing, developing and manufacturing motorcycle parts more than 25 years ago. These days, Müller Motorcycle AG is in the hands of the second generation, Fabian Müller. All those years of experience really make a difference when it comes to designing parts for radically new motorcycle styles. Or, as the team at Müller Motorcycle puts it, “making the impossible possible.”

the test in order to create a lowering kit that would have optimal installation and operation features. The Müller Motorcycle lowering kit for Milwaukee-Eight models (p/n 1304-0966) features continuous adjustability, meaning the rider can choose exactly how low they want to go. Riders can opt to go as much as 40mm lower than stock while riding. To ease installation, the lowering kit comes with a replacement bearing, and the kit can be mounted without requiring the threaded rod to be shortened.

One of these design challenges came when HarleyDavidson introduced the Milwaukee-Eight models. Müller Motorcycle put its design and engineering skills to

The lowering kit is the latest in Müller Motorcycle’s long history of innovative engineering. The German company’s parts are TÜV certified, which means they meet a rigorous list of quality and functionality requirements so customers can buy the products with confidence. Müller Motorcycle also focuses on designing parts that are quick and simple to install. A Harley might be one of the great American motorcycles, but it can still benefit from German engineering. ■

etting the power from the motor to the rear wheel is Sunstar’s business. The company carries sprockets, chains and complete chain kits for street and off-road riding, with options including direct OEM replacements and premium race-proven components. Sunstar Powerdrive countershaft sprockets are made from case-hardened chromoly steel for excellent strength and durability, and the surface treatment prohibits rust and corrosion. Most racing applications have drilled holes to reduce weight. Customers can choose a Sunstar steel OEM replacement rear sprocket – made from heat-treated high-carbon steel for maximum reliability – or upgrade to the Ergal sprocket or Works-Z light steel rear sprocket. Blending longevity and light weight, the aerospace-grade 7075 T-6 aluminum Ergal sprockets are designed for ultimate performance. Weight reduction holes keep things light, and Sunstar’s exclusive tooth-valley design provides more chain contact area.
