Mr. Motocross by D on Em de

I

’ve written here previously that 2018 is THOR’s 50th anniversary. What a great history of both the man and the company. Torsten Hallman was already the 250cc champion of motocross here in Europe and the rest of the world when I first watched him race near my home in San Diego, California. Hallman had accepted an invitation the year before from America’s Husqvarna importer Edison Dye to come from Sweden to introduce the sport of motocross to the United States market. Torsten traveled from coast to coast and won all 23 motos that he competed in that year. When it was announced that he was coming back over in 1967, I had to be there to watch him fly around at our local track along with Roger DeCoster, Joel Robert and a few other Husqvarna and CZ riders he brought with him. In 1968, Torsten and his traveling circus brought even more Grand Prix motocross competitors for their annual appearance in the United States. It was great to watch them teach the Americans what the sport was all about, including the latest riding gear to wear. The riders in America, as well as all over Europe, wanted to wear what Mr. Motocross wore. Torsten Hallman Original Racewear (THOR) was born.

Don Emde Collection

Torsten Hallman was the 250cc European Motocross Champion three times (1959-61) and 250cc World Motocross Champion four times (1962, ’63, ’66, ’67). His impact on the sport is impossible to measure, but it continues today in the good hands of LeMans Corporation with distribution handled by Parts Europe. In this issue, you can see their latest lineup, with some special products that pay tribute to the man that started it all. ■

NEWS EVENTS 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship OFF TO THE RACES

W

ell, the long awaited 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship is now upon us and the highly competitive contenders of the MXGP and MX2 classes were working their way into the sixth round of the series when this issue was going to press. As of round five at the GP of Portugal in Agueda, Thor/Kawasaki rider Clement Desalle was in fourth place overall in the season points run. The series found Desalle on the podium twice after several rounds of intense bar-banging action. The tough Belgian rider opened the season with backto-back third place finishes in race one at the MXGP of Patagonia Argentina. That performance put him squarely in third overall and the season was off and running. Fellow Thor/Kawasaki teammate Julien Lieber made his MXGP debut by cracking into the top 10 of the points

standings after Argentina, an impressive move by the former MX2 rider. Desalle racked up another third place overall at the third round of the series in Spain. He put in a strong performance for two 4-4 results at the incredible Red Sands race facility. During the next stop at the MXGP of Trentino Italy, Desalle picked up steam and earned two podiums, second place in race one and third place in race two. He carried this momentum into the fifth round in Portugal and put in an impressive ride to get a third place finish in the second moto. It’s going to be a long season of racing so expect these hardcharging riders to fight to pile on the points in that hunt for a coveted MXGP title. ■

D

o you know where that iconic Thor name came from? It’s the acronym for Torsten Hallman Original Racewear, the motocross gear introduced back in 1968 by Torsten Hallman, four-time World Motocross Champion and the man widely credited with popularizing motocross worldwide. It’s been 50 years since all this started and over the decades there’s been an endless list of champions using, endorsing and winning with the gear Hallman pioneered. Fast forward to 2018. To celebrate its Golden Anniversary not only has Thor included a “50th Anniversary Line” into its gear lineup, there’s also a range of Hallman Racing gear. This collection of jerseys, gloves and casual wear is not only as retrocool as can be, it’s also highly functional. With Thor, you wouldn’t expect anything less. The first things produced during Hallman Racing’s 1968 start were gloves that were adapted from the “Bandy” gloves used in Hallman’s native Sweden for winter sports. With Hallman’s improvements in design they became motocross specific and were an immediate success. So, naturally there are gloves in the Hallman Lineup of 2018. The Hallman Digit Gloves are no-frills in appearance, all business in performance. Vintage-inspired in style, the 4-way stretch mesh panels are coupled with vented goatskin; there are foam knuckle guards, silicone-treated fingertips and hook-and-loop wrist closures. It all adds up to a pair of comfortable, timelessly styled gloves with plenty of performance to match. The Hallman Racing jerseys are just as attractive. The Hallman Hopetown Jersey and Hallman Ringer Jersey both come with all the fit, finish, materials and performance of that popular Thor Pulse gear of today, a contemporary chassis-design minimizing all unnecessary material without hindering mobility. The jerseys feature moisture-wicking materials here and smooth Softstretch collars. The look is

pure retro, vintage Hallman Racing at its best. Both jerseys have old-school designs and colors and that Hallman Ringer Jersey will turn heads. Boldly striped and harkening back to the earliest, wild and wooly days of motocross, it’s tough to miss. There’s also a full selection of eye-catching casual wear. The Hallman Racing T-shirts and zipped-and-hooded sweatshirts all bear the original Hallman Racing name. Some of the designs even couple their vintage logos with graphics celebrating notable tracks like Carlsbad Raceway in the USA. Back in the ’60s, it didn’t take Hallman long to recognize the need for quality motocross gear, which led to Torsten Hall-

man Original Racewear. Over the years that gear has evolved with the sport, with changes big and small made as new challenges presented themselves and advancements took place. Today’s racers compete in an entirely different manner than in years past, moving around on their bikes in a way never thought possible. It’s a racing style that puts a significant amount of strain and stress on their gear. Thor has made sure that its gear meets the need of those riders and the company’s 2018 collection is no exception. ■

En route to victory under the lights at Qatar, Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso leads Tech 3 Yamaha’s Johann Zarco and Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez, who finished in 2nd place.

A

fter months of testing and other means of preparation, in March, the 19-race 2018 MotoGP World Championship got underway at night in the desert of the Arabian Peninsula at Qatar’s Losail International Circuit. Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso, last year’s surprising contender who very nearly won the 2017 world championship, delivered a season-opening victory over Honda’s and Yamaha’s lead riders Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi. In April, the entire MotoGP circus was flown to South America for the Gran Premio de la Republica Argentina. This event was about as unusual as it gets, including a penalty at the start of the race to every competitor except the top qualifier, Jack Miller. Following an unexpected late rain shower, he was the only rider prepared to start at the prescribed time. As a result, FIM officials penalized the rest of the field by pushing all but Miller back the distance of three rows. It would be a busy day for the race officials, especially pertaining to reigning World MotoGP Champion Marc Marquez, who displayed a bit of erratic behavior. Before British rider Cal Crutchlow took the checkered flag to win the race, Marquez had received penalties for riding backwards on the grid before the start and rough riding, which included a 30-second time penalty that dropped him out of a point scoring finish. Valentino Rossi was one victim of Marquez’s riding style and crashed out. Crutchlow was first, Johann Zarco was second, Alex Rins finished a career-best third and early leader Miller was fourth. The Circuit of the Americas race course in Austin, Texas has literally been the site of perfection for Marquez. He has never lost a race at that track during his career. So following his very unfortunate result in Argentina, Marquez was determined to deliver a dominant performance at COTA. He was successful in the race, despite an incident in qualifying where he was again reprimanded by FIM officials for blocking the path of other riders on his cool down lap. After being docked three positions on the grid, the Repsol Honda rider got a great start, was soon in the lead and sped away to an easy victory. After three races, Dovizioso held a narrow points lead over Spanishriders Marquez and Maverick Viñales. The series resumes in Jerez, Spain. More info at: www.motogp.com. ■

Early season points leader Andrea Dovizioso leads MotoGP veteran Dani Pedrosa at the Circuit of the Americas. Despite a painful hand injury, Dani finished 7th.

Cowboy hats on the podium can only mean this is Texas. Maverick Viñales (2nd), Marc Marquez (winner) and Andrea Iannone (3rd) celebrate on the podium at COTA.

For the first time, Moose Racing has a fuel petcock rebuild kit available for motorcycle and ATV applications. The brand-new product includes all of the components necessary to rebuild a petcock, including the face screws, tank bolts, face gasket, tank gasket, diaphragm, O-rings, wave washer and other required items. For specific Honda applications that have a non re-buildable riveted petcock, Moose Racing has kits that include special drill and selftapping screws along with detailed instructions to make the change easy and inexpensive.

Moose Racing says that its Pro Shark Fin disc protector, which includes a brake carrier, is the burliest on the market. It provides protection for the caliper and the rotor, and the unit replaces the entire stock brake carrier to provide the most thorough coverage available.

New for 2018, Parts Europe is now stocking applications for Moose Racing’s aluminum and steel rear sprockets for dual sport and Adventure Touring models. The updated list includes Aprilia, BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha models, so check the catalog for a complete (and long) list. The aluminum rear sprockets are made from 100 percent machined German aluminum that has received extra tempering to reduce distortion and provide optimum thickness. The carefully engineered tooth thickness results in maximum tooth and chain contact. Moose Racing leaves cleaning grooves out of the sprocket design so that more aluminum contacts the sprocket, which results

The steel rear sprockets from Moose Racing are made from a premium quality C45 high-carbon steel that has been CNC precision-machined to ensure tight tolerances. Lightening holes keep the weight down without compromising the strength of the steel, and a black powder coated finish tops off the sprocket. More new listings at Parts Europe are Sherco and Beta applications for Moose Racing Pro LG skid plates. The skid plates are made from 8mm thick HDPE (high-density polyethylene), offering more protection than the standard Pro skid plate. The plate provides full linkage protection without adding a lot of weight. The Pro LG is 40 percent lighter than an aluminum skid plate, and its HDPE construction means that it does not rattle. Each Pro LG skid plate comes with mounting hardware and installation instructions. When it comes to the little details, Moose Racing has a variety of M1 bolt kits and hardware kits. Similarly, the M1 Euro bolt kit is useful for multiple European brands. It was developed for 125-500cc KTMs, but it can also be used with many Husqvarna, Husaberg, Beta and Gas Gas models. The M1 ATV bolt kit includes hundreds of pieces developed to work with most ATVs, and it includes hex/allen bolts, nuts of various sizes, flat washers, lock washers and two sizes of plastic rivets for fenders. Moose Racing also has a number of model-specific bolt kits. The M1 line includes kits for the Honda CR/CRF, Kawasaki KX/KXF, Suzuki RM/RMZ and Yamaha YZ/YZF/ WR. Each kit has hundreds of pieces to match the factory bolts, washers, spacers, Fuji lock nuts and other brandspecific items. Like the bolt kits, the M1 hardware kits are a resource for hard-to-find washers, spacers and other hardware unique to the motorcycle brand. Performance Clutch The Scorpion Line

A

strong-gripping, easy-releasing, light-at-thelever clutch is a rider’s dream. Harley-Davidson riders don’t have to look any further than Barnett to find what they need.

Barnett’s Scorpion Series lineup, Low-Profile Lock-Up clutches, Scorpion billet clutch baskets and Scorpion Series clear derby covers are all popular upgrades. Everything is easily installed and readily available, and the applications cover most every Harley-Davidson on the road. There are setups for Big Twin and Sportster models

from 1941 up to and including the 2018 present-day bikes and Parts Europe has them. Especially popular, the Scorpion Low Profile Lock-Up clutch brings clutch technology from the drag strip right to the street. A Scorpion Low Profile Lock-Up will handle everything from a stock or mildly modified bike up to a 200-plus horsepower application and it’s all designed to fit right under a stock primary cover. The clutch surface area and capacity is greatly increased compared to stock. The friction plates are all Kevlar and three different sets of six coil springs are provided for a wide variety of initial pressure options. With the light or medium springs installed, or a custom combination of them, the lever pull can be nice and easy yet at the top-end that clutch will grab as tight as a vice. Centrifugally weighted fingers on a low-profile billet aluminum lock-up pressure plate see to that. The faster a Scorpion spins the tighter it grips. Cable and hydraulic versions are available.

Barnett’s Scorpion clutches and billet clutch baskets offer a big improvement over the OE pieces for everything from stock bikes to pavement-burning drag motorcycles.

A Scorpion Billet clutch basket makes all this even better. Available for 2007 and later Big Twins, the baskets are a great solution to a broken or worn OE basket. Precision machined from 2024-T3 billet aluminum and hard anodized, they’re a big step up in quality and durability from OE. A direct bolt-in replacement, all the hardware and instructions are included. All that Scorpion gear is also as good-looking as it is functional and Barnett makes it easy to show everything off. The Scorpion Series clear derby cover can take care of that. Designed to fit OEM primary covers on 1998 and up Big Twins and 2015-2018 FLs with the narrow primary, the covers feature a quarter-inch thick clear polycarbonate window to the clutch. That Low-Profile Lock-Up is in plain view, and the scratch-and-discoloration resistant window is firmly secured and sealed with an O-ring gasket. The outer cover is CNC machined from billet aluminum and available with a chrome or black powder coat finish. ■

Talking 2-Stroke

Exhaust Products for those Popular Bikes

L

et’s talk 2-strokes. FMF and Don Emler were not only there in the early ’70s when 2-stroke competition began to grow and dominate the racing scene, but also helped fuel its popularity.

As 2-strokes began to give way to those high-revving 4-strokes, FMF established itself as a major player in performance exhaust for that segment, while not relinquishing its strong position and range of product for the 2-stroke market. And now that those highly competitive, relatively inexpensive and very enjoyable bikes are making a welcome resurgence, FMF is right there with them. Throughout those years where 2-strokes marginally faded from view, FMF continued to work on products for

The Factory Fatty is an evolution from the earlier days of the cone pipes used by FMF for factory riders and teams. These pipes share many of the same performance characteristics of those racing pipes, but with improved, consistent craftsmanship and increased material quality. The Factory Fatty broadens and smooths the power curve, boosting gains throughout the entire powerband, and adds some increased over-rev, particularly noticeable on long, sweeping corners or similar wide-open riding. The Fatty line from FMF – whether the original Gold Series or the Factory version – is a popular 2-stroke pipe in the aftermarket, and is sure to attract attention whether installed on a new or used machine, or displayed near the parts counter.

Even when 2-stroke bikes faded from popularity, FMF continued to race, test and develop exhaust products for those highly competitive machines. Now that they’re making a comeback, FMF is right there with pipes and silencers to help boost their performance.

the “smokers,” racing, testing, developing and refining varied pipe and silencer offerings for bikes ranging from 50cc and up to the big 500cc beasts. This lineup included exhaust for two- and four-wheel machines, old and new. FMF was simply not content with letting 2-strokes fade away, giving riders of early KTMs, Husqvarna and some small volume European brands like GG and Beta the opportunity to feel the power with various performance exhaust items for both motocross and off-road competition. One standout product is the FMF Gold Series Fatty; its first and the original 2-stroke pipe. The Fattys have a broad range of fitments, and wide coverage of models and years. Let’s not forget all that brilliant chrome and nickel plating; these are good looking pipes.

Another product that’s particularly significant given today’s popular competitive and recreational off-road riding scene is the FMF Gnarly range. This innovation and these pipes are a solution for riders of all levels who are into more technical riding, and are looking for incredible low and mid-range response and performance on the trails and in the woods. With the intended and developed use for this pipe, Gnarlys are built with thicker gauge steel and are ready to take some abuse from less than forgiving trails or obstacles – just ask Cody Webb, Graham Gervais, Kyle Redmond, Kailub Russell and many others. With today’s 2-strokes, sound is as important as performance. While the proper pipe is quite important, the rear silencer more than complements that change. The FMF established range includes the Powercore, Turbinecore, (for older machines) Powercore 2, Powercore 2 Shorty, Turbinecore 2, and Q Silencer. FMF’s newest 2.1 series of silencers, including super trick anodized titanium versions must be seen (and heard) to be believed. With a lineup this big, there’s a silencer for every application no matter the rider’s priority – performance, quiet sound, forestry legal, or any combination. Don Emler, FMF, and the company’s committed development team are still hard at work designing, testing and

FMF offers a range of items for maintaining and servicing those 2-stroke exhaust products, including O-rings, spring kits, replacement stickers and silencer packing. Of special note, FMF’s high-quality Premier packing is a great investment for your customers; it’s easier to work with and more durable than stock or FMF’s standard packing. A Clear View of Performance

N

ick Trask’s Assault Series custom bikes made quite a splash when they hit the show circuit and magazines a few years ago.

Starting out with a machine dubbed First Offense and following up on that one with the Silver Assault, Second Offense, the Black & Gold, Repeat Offender and Black Assault they all combined Trask’s “Performance Minded – Performance Driven” approach to custom style. Naturally, there were plenty of eye-popping Trask Performance one-off parts used, and one of the most impressive custom accessories in the lineup is now available to everyone with bolt-on applications up and down the Harley-Davidson model and year lineup.

The Assault Charge is a deep breather, and it incorporates another Nick Trask innovation, a simple, interchangeable velocity stack that can be swapped out quickly. The Assault Charge high-flow can easily be custom-tuned to accommodate a wide variety of different size throttle bodies and carburetor throats. The filtering element here is washable, reusable and easy to maintain. Then there’s the look. y adding one new vendor, Parts Europe is now able to offer two additional premium brands to dealers. Belgian company Technical Touch, the latest company to join the Parts Europe lineup, is the European distributor of both KYB Racing Suspension parts and Hinson Clutch Components.

By adding Belgian vendor Technical Touch to is lineup, Parts Europe can now offer products from KYB and Hinson Clutch Components.

KYB was founded as the Kayaba Research Center in 1919, giving the Japanese company a long legacy in the automotive and powersports industries. In Europe, KYB suspension is commonly found on race bikes in both amateur and professional motorsports. In fact, KYB uses the racetrack as its proving ground, developing new technology in the high-speed world of motorsports to create suspension products that provide optimal riding stability and great performance. Parts Europe is now carrying a range of KYB’s suspension components for a variety of applications, including fork springs, rear shock springs, seals, spare parts and other suspension pieces. In addition to KYB suspension components, Parts Europe is also carrying the necessities to keep all of those pieces running smoothly. KYB’s K2C shock oil and 01M fork oil are both low-friction formulas designed for racing applications. Hinson Clutch Components got its start in offroad competition. Founder Wayne Hinson started the company in 1992 with the intent of stopping breakage on aluminum clutch baskets. Steel was too heavy for racing, so his solution was to design a clutch basket that was made of a stronger aluminum and hardcoated. Hinson has worked with top teams in nearly every type of racing, incuding Supercross, motocross, ATV, roadracing and supermoto. The company uses that racing experience to hone each off-the-shelf component. One of those race-proven parts is the Billetproof clutch basket, which Hinson says is the winningest clutch basket in the world. Made of precision-machined billet T-6 aircraft quality aluminum, the clutch basket improves heat dissipation, increases oiling to help fight clutch heat and

fade, and helps eliminate clutch chatter when it is used with a Hinson pressure plate and hub. The Billetproof’s strength is superior to stock, but its weight is equal to, or lighter than, stock to make it a viable option for racers and recreational riders alike. As for durability, Hinson clutches can last up to five times longer than a stock clutch. Check with your Parts Europe rep about all of the Hinson products now available, incuding clutch baskets, inner hubs, pressure plates, slipper clutches, fiber and steel plates, clutch springs and clutch covers. ■

otocross and off-road 2-stroke bikes are increasingly popular and many manufacturers continue to add new and updated 2-strokes to their line-ups.

Tell your customers who are eager to add extra power to their 2-stroke machines about the Pro Circuit range. The company has products for many machines including those from Beta, Cobra, Honda, Husaberg, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, TM, and Yamaha. Plus, for your customers who are rebuilding older 2-strokes, Pro Circuit offers pipes and silencers for select late ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s models from Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and KTM. Pro Circuit offers the Works Pipe, Platinum Pipe, Platinum 2 Pipe, R304 Silencer, 304 Silencer and Ti-2 Silencer. Decades of research and development have gone into each exhaust system. Pro Circuit’s designers have eliminated weak spots by reinforcing mounting brackets and stingers. Each pipe is hand welded with stamped high-quality carbon steel construction. These pipes are built to perform and last. The Works Pipe offers enhanced performance and power, and the un-plated, oiled metal finish gives your customer’s bike that works look just like factory riders had back in the day. The pipe’s raw looks go with the raw power it produces. The Platinum Pipe offers the same performance gains as the Works Pipe, but is a more ideal choice for extreme weather conditions. It is constructed of high-quality carbon steel and includes a nickel-plated finish to reduce maintenance, and to help protect the pipe against nature’s elements. Next is the Platinum 2 Pipe offering the same performance gains as the popular Works Pipe. The Platinum 2 Pipe is constructed of heavy-duty 18-gauge metal that provides increased protection from rock or crash damage. This pipe also utilizes platinum plating on the body to help protect it from everyday elements, making this an ideal pipe for customers who race or ride off-road. Silencers are extremely important to your customers who compete and have to pass sound checks. To get the most out of a Pro Circuit pipe, mate it with a Pro Circuit 2-stroke silencer. The Ti-2 Shorty Carbon Kevlar/Titanium Silencer is constructed with a carbon Kevlar shell, titanium tubing and titanium end-caps. It offers the factory look and appearance while reducing weight. The Ti-2 is for closed-course racing only. The R-304 Shorty Silencer was developed as a full-race 2-stroke silencer. The compact design of the short aluminum canister offers optimum performance gains. The 304 Factory Sound Silencer offers a slightly longer

HANDLEBARS

P R O D U C T

Get a Grip

Better Comfort for Off-Road Handlebars

O

ff-road motorcycles can really take a beating, but so can a rider’s hands. Uncomfortable or awkward bars and grips can result in sore hands, blisters and a lessened ability to feel completely in control of the motorcycle. The French company Neken has come up with a solution in the form of SFH off-road handlebars. SFH stands for “smooth feeling handlebar,” and Neken introduced the new line during the EICMA show in 2017. While standard handlebar grips are 2mm thick, the SFH handlebars accommodate 4mm thick SFH grips for an extra-soft feel.

The SFH bars are made of 7070 T6 aerospace-quality aluminum that is finished with an anodized gray color. The handlebars are oversized and have a variable diameter and wall thickness, and have a 28.6mm diameter in the clamping area for easy installation. The construction material combined with the thickness results in handlebars that are 40 percent lighter and stronger than a stock handlebar. Laser etching aids in centering and indexing the handlebars, and a knurled clutch side keeps the grip securely in place. A Neken-branded bar pad is included with each set.

Neken’s SFH handlebars are built for comfort and control. The specially designed bars require the use of the company’s SFH grips and throttle tube, the latter includes a selection of cams for dialing in throttle response.

The grips have a half-waffle pattern made from a low-friction material, resulting in smooth operation and a comfortable feel for a rider’s hands. A reduced diameter throttle tube compensates for the thicker grips, so everything feels like the standard size, even with the added padding. Customers who purchase the SFH handlebars will also need to purchase SFH grips, throttle tubes and throttle cams to complete the setup. The grips are available in black and gray, and they can be purchased as a bundle with the reduced-diameter throttle tube and throttle cams. The throttle cams have a nearly universal fit for offroad motorcycles. The grips can also be purchased singly for use as a replacement part.

Neken offers the SFH handlebars in various length, height and sweep combinations so a rider can choose the ideal setup. There are also 10 different color schemes, with options that include factory-matched colors, white, black, and fluorescent yellow. Neken has been producing handlebars for 28 years, starting with OEM bars before forming NK Neken, which is the company’s own line of handlebars. Neken is also known for its triple clamps, including the popular, patented SFS triple clamp that debuted three years ago. ■

Replacement Parts for UTVs and ATVs

N

o matter how good your customers’ vehicles look on the outside, when those drivetrain and engine components go on the fritz, no one is going to get anywhere. To make sure UTV and ATV owners can go wherever they want to, when they want, Moose Utility Division has replacement parts that include components for power steering, drive shafts, fuel pumps and ignition switches.

Moose Utility’s propeller/drive shafts for UTV applications are direct replacements for the OEM shafts. The heattreated carbon steel shafts have a vibration-free design that offers long-lasting operation. Each shaft is powder coated black for an extra layer of extreme durability. The replaceable U-joints are heavy-duty components with greased fittings for smooth, sturdy movement.

The power steering kits from Moose Utility can be used for both UTV and ATV applications. The kits are designed to be extremely durable in all weather and riding conditions. The housing is weather sealed to an IP67 submersion rating, which means it can withstand being submerged in one meter of water for 30 minutes.

For Polaris vehicles, Moose Utility Division also has fuel pump replacements and ignition switches. The parts are direct OEM replacements for an easy swap. The fuel pumps are available for both EFI and carbureted models, and the EFI versions include a pick-up screen to filter out debris. The pumps have stock flow rates to ensure the same engine performance.

All of the connectors are waterproof, too, for an added barrier against rain or any big splashes. The injectionmolded design provides resistance to moisture, debris and vibration, a trait that is critical for an off-road powersports vehicle.

The replacement ignition switches are available for most Polaris models from 1996 to current. Each switch includes the mounting nut plus two keys, so not only is it an ideal replacement for a broken switch, but it is also a solution for a rider who has lost their keys. ■

The UTV applications for the power steering kits come with an adjustable shaft, allowing each kit to be finetuned for a perfect fit. The ATV applications come with a steering column. To keep things simple, no drilling is required for the model-specific kits.

Another key performance feature of Alpinestars gloves are the stretch inserts on the fingers and/or finger sidewalls, which work to give high levels of flexibility and feel on the bike’s controls. These stretch inserts are constructed from either stretch fabric (SMX-2 Air Carbon and SMX-1 Air V2) or leather (SP-8 V2 and SP-2 V2). All the gloves have integrated foam padding in the hand and fingers, which helps promotes fit and greater comfort. With the exception of the SP-8 V2, the gloves have 3D and poly-mesh (SMX-2 Air Carbon), strategically positioned perforation zones and air mesh (SMX-1 Air) and perforated leather zones and vented knuckle gusset (SP-2 V2), which allow for significant levels of internal airflow and ventilation for cooling performance. All Alpinestars gloves have hook and loop grip wrist closures designed to seamlessly fit under or over your riding jacket and to securely keep the glove in position without any pressure pinch points or obstructions to the wrist. Additionally, the gloves feature a very convenient touchscreen compatible fingertip so that you don’t need to remove them while consulting your phone or GPS. ■

And in MX2-GP, Yamaha Wilvo, Kemea and SM Action, Martin Racing, Marchetti KTM, 62 Motorsport Husqvarna and MX Fontaracing have all chosen Vertex. And it’s no different in the Supermoto and Enduro World Championships where a host of teams like TM Racing and the Beta Factory Team all use Vertex pistons. Quite an endorsement for Vertex quality and performance and it’s not surprising, or anything new. For more than 60 years experienced engine builders have turned to Vertex for pistons. It’s a lineup of proquality pistons that includes the latest 2018 applications. For high-compression 4-stroke engines the Vertex slipper-skirt forged pistons are all manufactured from high quality/ aircraft grade materials. They’re machined

to exacting tolerances and receive a special anti-friction/ molybdenum-impregnated skirt coating for a unique cushion between the piston skirt and the cylinder bore. The Vertex cast pistons, ideal in modern fuel-injected 2-stroke engines, are just as good. Again using only the finest materials, every piston is finish-machined for shape, size, alignment, consistency, and top performance. ■

Light and Reliable

A Lighter, Stronger Sprocket

n high-performance powersports, every bit of weight savings can add up. At the same time, reliability is a necessary component of any part, especially one that helps get you down the track or trail. Sunstar makes its Works-Z sprocket from the highest quality stainless steel, and the result is that it weighs up to 50 percent less than OE steel sprockets. The Works-Z is heat treated for added strength; its hardness is five times more than that of an aluminum sprocket, and twice that of a standard steel sprocket. Sunstar says that the Works-Z sprocket is also more durable thanks to its lateral strength, which exceeds a standard, untreated aluminum sprocket. Customers will appreciate the offset tooth design that acts as a self-cleaning system. That design, which was also found on the original Works-Z rear sprocket, has an even more important perk in that it helps to extend the life of the entire chain drive system.

Sunstar’s Works-Z sprockets are made from stainless steel, and are up to 50 percent lighter than OE steel sprockets. The sprockets nicely complement Sunstar’s line of drive chains.

In addition, Parts Europe carries a range of Sunstar drive chains — EXR1 Works Endurocross sealed chains, 420 and 428 Motocross/Off-road Racing chains and the 520 Works Motocross/Off-road Racing chains are some of Sunstar’s high-performance options for off-road racing. ■

Race Worthy

High-Performance 2-Stroke Pistons

W

hile some may argue 4-strokes are still the leaders in many forms of professional racing, 2-strokes are alive and well in the dirtbike world.

Manufacturers are even supporting new 2-stroke development, with KTM releasing its TPi models, and Yamaha releasing a YZ65. ProX Racing Parts has supported 2-strokes since the beginning. ProX 2-stroke pistons are hypereutectic cast aluminum alloy, which produces a piston with a higher silicon content. The aluminum alloy of ProX 2-stroke pistons contains approximately 18 percent silicon, better resisting thermal expansion over forged parts.

Piston skirts aren’t the only part of the piston exposed to stress. Piston crowns and ring grooves can take a beating, as they are at the forefront of combustion, and consistently exposed to excessive heat. This is why most ProX 2-stroke pistons feature anodized crowns. The anodizing creates a protective barrier over the aluminum, drastically improving its wear-resisting abilities. ■

available for many applications. Ask your Parts Europe rep for more details, and visit blog.pro-x.com.

Heat creates big changes in pistons. A cold piston is a different shape than a piston at operating temp. With the higher silicon content, this shape change is lessened, allowing ProX pistons to be run at tighter clearances, translating to increased performance. While higher-silicon aluminum itself has better wear properties, most ProX 2-stroke pistons also come equipped with a skirt coating that will assist in piston break-in, allowing the piston to adjust to the cylinder without extra wear.

The 2-stroke pistons from ProX Racing Parts are designed for high performance at the peak operating temperatures of high-revving 2-stroke engines.

All-Day Comfort

The Stylish HighTail Fastback

M

ustang has offered a variety of seats for more than 35 years, and now the brand has a number of new designs that many customers might not associate with its well-known aesthetic. These new designs play off the current new model lineup, evolving styles and growing industry influences. The first new model to reflect these changes is the HighTail Fastback. The HighTail places riders in a comfortable, but aggressive riding position. Available for 2008-later Harley-Davidson FL Touring models, this updated version of Mustang’s original Fastback positions the rider slightly lower and 1 inch further back than its predecessor. A bucketed 34cm wide driver seat meets a raised, arching tail section that delivers a look symbolic of the seat’s ’60s-era muscle car namesake. A 15cm rise provides ideal cruising posture and excellent lumbar support. The HighTail’s precision-cut cover is hand-sewn from high quality vinyl that has the appearance of leather, but the

durability to withstand harsh elements. Detailed stitching and a blend of smooth vinyl panels with perforated vinyl inlays create a subtle contrasting effect. A marine-grade fiberglass baseplate is the foundation for the heart of every Mustang seat — a proprietary controlled density polyurethane foam that delivers all-day comfort for rider and passenger. Mustang’s foam requires no break-in period, and is known for retaining its shape and support even after years of use. ■

Kick it Up a Notch

A Seat Made for Shredding That last option is especially great for riders who need extra traction when the occasion calls for it. The extended back support and 29cm seating offers plenty of space for an easy, comfortable ride when a rider is more interested in getting somewhere than showing off.

KickFlip in diamond and pleated “Gripp Tape”

T

he world is your playground…shred it! Any adventurous Harley-Davidson rider looking for a freestyle saddle can check out the new KickFlip seat from LePera Motorcycle Seats.

From the styling to the materials, the KickFlip is made with excitement in mind. The maximized back support and ample seating area offer plenty of options for riding—or showing off—at a moment’s notice. The KickFlip comes in four options for the black finish: Basket Weave, Diamond, Pleated or Pleated “Gripp Tape.”

LePera’s Marathon Foam adds to the bragging rights of the KickFlip, providing maximum stability and comfort. Underneath the Marathon Foam is LePera’s handcrafted steel seat base, a tradition that dates back to LePera’s founding in 1972. The powder coated steel base is carpeted on the bottom to provide a friction-free surface between the seat and the fender. The KickFlip fits a range of Harley-Davidson models and is made in the U.S.A. Applications include the 2006-17 Dyna, 1982-1994 FXR, 2004-06 and 2010-18 XL, and 200818 Baggers. The FXR application is only compatible with the stock hinge and latch. ■

Racer Elite Piston Series

T

he old adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” might apply to wheelbarrows and wrenches, but Wiseco knows that complacency is detrimental to progression. Modern 4-strokes have largely dominated motocross, while innovative progress for 2-strokes has taken a back seat.

Wiseco’s Racer Elite 2-Stroke Series pistons feature a proprietary coating – ArmorFit – that allows the piston to selfadjust to the cylinder.

Luckily, Wiseco has created the Racer Elite 2-Stroke Series pistons, manufactured with features outside the status quo of common 2-stroke pistons. In the past, 2-stroke pistons have been ordered in A, B, C piston sizing. Now, provided the bore is within that range, the 2-Stroke Racer Elite piston will drop in and conform to the proper size. The secret is ArmorFit–a proprietary skirt coating that allows the piston to self-adjust to the cylinder. Wiseco R&D has developed ArmorFit in-house. It is a dry film lubricant that not only conforms to the bore size, but remains for the life of the piston, reducing friction and wear. While Wiseco has been forging 2-stroke pistons for decades, the company set out to make the 2-Stroke Racer

Elite even stronger. The pistons are forged from 2000 series alloy, which offers greater tensile strength over the commonly used 4000 series. While stronger, this alloy is less resilient to heat and pressure in its raw form. Enter ArmorPlating, a proprietary surface treatment from Wiseco. Unlike most surface treatments, ArmorPlating is not formed through electrical current, but rather through a chemical reaction. ArmorPlating serves to protect against detonation, improve wear resistance, and creates better sealing in the ring groove. ■

RIDING GEAR

Weather Ready

Braving the Elements with OJ The Pro Moto Leg Cover is a waterproof polyester cover that will keep your customers warm and dry in wet conditions.

G

uarding yourself and your luggage from the elements can be a real challenge sometimes, whether the ride is a daily commute or a crosscountry trip. To help keep riders warm and dry, and their gear safely stowed away, Parts Europe is now carrying a range of apparel and luggage from Italian brand OJ.

Compact rainsuit

OJ originated in Milan, Italy, in 2001. Back then, the company was focused on a collection of products for scooter riders in an urban setting. What started as a 16-page catalog has grown into a complete range of motorcycle products, with items like rainsuits, leg covers and a full lineup of luggage options. While there are still plenty of things available for scooter and city riders, there are also options for touring, café and street riders. When it comes to keeping warm, OJ has riders covered—quite literally—with the Pro Moto Leg Cover. The waterproof polyester outer fabric keeps legs dry. Extra warmth comes from a detachable double layer thermal lining made of a quilted and a synthetic fur layer. The saddle cover and semi-rigid ribs ensure that everything stays in place. Fireproof inserts and reflective strips add safety elements, and a pocket adds storage space. OJ has several options for men’s rain gear. The rain jacket and pants can be purchased singly or as a complete rainsuit. All of the rain gear is made of a waterproof ultra-light nylon shell. Taped seams keep out rain and snow, and reflective strips increase visibility. The jacket has a hood as well as adjustable wrist and waist points, and the pants have adjustable ankles. The rain gear includes the Compact rainsuit, jacket and pants. OJ also has a Compact Lined rainsuit and Down Plus rain pants, which both add an extra layer of warmth.

The Week dry bags are ideal for Adventure-Touring riders.

They include a full-length zipper on each side to make putting them on easy. The Compact rainsuit and jacket are both available in fluorescent yellow or black, while the standalone pants and Compact Lined rainsuit come in black only. The sizing goes from XS to 5XL for all of the options. The broad range of luggage options from OJ reflects the company’s commitment to providing gear for all types of riding. The Week dry bags and dry roll bag are ideal for Adventure-Touring riders who need full protection from water. For touring, the Inner top bag for top cases and Inner side bag for saddlebags allow a rider to drop in a fully-packed bag for more convenient loading and unloading. Parts Europe is also carrying four variations of OJ’s Tanky tank bag, which all have tough polyester construction and a waterproof cover. In addition to the original Tanky, OJ also produces the Travel Tanky, Smart Tanky and Micro Tanky. Each option includes fastening straps that work with a four-piece magnet set, which is available separately. ■
