year 1990
CONTEXT: LOCATION The Gurudwara Sis Ganj is located on the main Chandni Chowk road, in the walled city of Old Delhi (Shahjahanabad). On the same ground once stood the Kotwali (Islamic Jail), Madrassa (Islamic school) and a mosque in Mughal times. This place has been witness to several important events of history. One of them being the assassination of Guru Teg Bahadur- the ninth guru of the Sikhs, and his disciples under the orders of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1675. Sis Ganj was built in their memory, initially as a small shelter (kothadi) sufficient enough to accommodate a space for the burning of oil lamps and other offerings.Today it’s a huge complex for pilgrimage, comprising of a large community hall for prayers, hall for community eating (Langer Hall), library, dispensary, office for Gurudwara Committee, a secondary school and Bhai Mati Das museum. Sis Ganj lies in the heart of Chandni Chowk which connects the famous Red Fort to Fatehpuri Masjid, thereby attracting a lot of tourist. OBSERVATION: AUTHOR’S NOTE The author wandered through the Sis Ganj complex, unaware of the fact that the same ground was once shared by a Kotwali and a Madrassa during the Mughal times. She sees no past, no continuity with what was, except for the ‘historic well’ (the spot of assassination of Guru Teg Bahadur in 1675) enclosed in a room built by the gurudwara management in 1990, and is approached by a series of sign boards guiding the way to the ‘historic well’. Dilapidated walls of the houses surround the Gurudwara complex on three sides, with the dangling chajjas of their windows intruding the walkway inside the complex. These worn out edges, as told by the gurudwara officials, are not more than 100 yrs old. The well polished granite stone on the floor, the concrete walls of the travellers home and the Langer hall, the glass windows with the openings for the A.C ducts running all over the facades of the buildings within the complex, speak about the recent construction of the complex. Unlike the main street of Chandni Chowk, where the old haunts the new, the Sis Ganj Gurudwara complex bears no traces of past (except for the ‘historic well’), for the buildings of historic importance where demolished, the grounds were cleared of all the possible past associations in 1990, when the site was handed over to the Gurudwara management by the Indian government.
DOCUMENTION: MAKING of a MAP The history of the site was studied in the form of various events associated with its context. These events, as gathered from various sources (books and internet) were chronologically arranged to form a narrative supported by relevent graphics. The narrative thus generated was read as a map.
Academic Work: ARCHITECTURE THESIS 9th sem - 5th yr, Aug ’07- Dec ‘08
SUPERIMPOSED HISTORICAL LAYERS
CONCEPTUAL APPROACH: MAKING of an ANTI-MAP As past can only be represented through the forms we give to its reality, thereby an abstraction for the same is devised through series of following operations on the site: The intersection and the juxtaposition of the past and the present figures, is used to create a series of fragments on the site. The essence of the ‘present’ comes from the 3-dimensional remains (PRESENCE) of the existing Gurudwara complex and the essence of the ‘past’ is reflected in the voids (ABSENCE) got by subtracting the ‘past’ from the ‘present’. To the resultant, the layer of the columns from the ‘past’, colonnade (from the Kotwali of Mughal times) is juxtaposed. Thus the abstract form so achieved becomes an ‘anti-map’ by exposing the site to the plurality of standpoints in relation to its past hence allowing visitors to find their own way to the understanding of the past.
CONCEPTUAL APPROACH: MAKING of an ANTI-MAP
UNDERSTANDING: READING of a MAP After conceiving a map, the gaps within its text (on the history of the site) are read as a mis-spoken/non-spoken set of information. Thus, the inablitiy to narrate the past clearly makes a point to disrupt the ability of the mapping process to communicate properly, a disruption hidden by the map yet integral to its process of communication. The author undertakes to expose these gaps which have the capacity to point to unspeakable infinites.

ABSTRACT Never in history has distance meant less. Never has man’s identity with place been more numerous, fragile and temporary. Alvin Toffler in his book describes ‘the people of future’, as commuting, travelling and regularly relocating one’s family. We ‘use up’ places and dispose of them in much the same way as we dispose off beer cans. In today’s urban scenario we are witnessing a historic decline in the significance of place to human life. We are breeding a new race of nomads which avoids commitment to fixed forms and functions. Commitment takes many forms. One of these is attachment to place. We can understand the significance of mobility only if we recognize the centrality of fixed place in the psychological architecture of traditional man. This centrality is reflected in our culture in innumerable ways. With the aim to understand the nomadic living and modular-ism in architecture the three case examples in the context of Gurgaon were studied in terms of construction material & technique, work & living space relationship, economics governing the spaces, needs of the occupants and the authority of the space. These case studies share the commonality of having the urban nomads such as working individuals, students and families (who are frequently moving from one place to another) as its users. The temporariness due to the mobility and disposability of the built form in case study-1 creates a new ideological space for the users, which is in contrary to the case study-2 and 3 which due to the rigidity of architecture. It is a space which breaks through the existing thought pattern or frameworks and becomes a place where the user can re-invent himself. This space is in constant motion, being constantly reformed and transformed by new experiences. Refusing to occupy and conquer, this space becomes nomadic. In understanding so, the movable objects (tube home, tent) became a generalised critique of conventional and fixed urban architecture, in favour of mobile and nomadic.

..... generates questioning
Today’s community tendency is a fragmentation of everyday life into series of isolated social settings, which has given rise to a longing for the return of homogeneous neighbourhoods - a group of inhabitants that are able to form their own shared, yet coherent world of private and public space.

Library design in 2500 sq.mtrs of plot acts as a metaphor, by taking basic geometry from immediate context (K.R circle). It thus derives meaning from the its historical context, not by adaptive reuse but by freezing it in its time and coupling it with the form of today. As a result, this gives birth to a new form which tackles issues related to the recreation of a public square including reinvention of public life, the urban and social role of this primary public space which would help users to rethink the role of public spaces in the defination of a rapidly growing modern city like Mysore.

WORD STATE Recipes for a Fast-Forward Future
WORD STATE is a design research project interested in the social, political and cultural use of words in public space. With main focus on London as a graphic/information space. Word state considers the presence and use of words in public (from advertising to conceptual interventions to posters) significant as a catalyst to London’s cultural and architectural future. Word state begins by asking what role words play in representing public space and concludes with a site specific intervention somewhere in London. Critical and symbolic design strategies as developed in this process is manifested as a series of B/W A1 posters, that questions the current role of words in public space.

Diverse Mediums Collective Voices
Professional Work: CRAFTS FUSION WORKSHOP, Feb - Aug ’08
DRONAH BRIEF Bringing together artists from varied forms of traditional arts and crafts of Mewar for the first time to attempt collaborative innovation without compromising the particular aesthetic and skill of the art form. During the 10 days of this workshop, five different folk artists namely Kavad maker, Molela sculptor, Mewar miniature painter, Phad painter & Nathdwara Pichwai painter, from the same region got together, interacted and worked with each other in order to help their art forms develop innovatively. To begin with, Ajit Rao (an architect & cartoonist) communicated with craftspersons both individually and in group, understood the potential of each craft and the related craftsperson. These discussions covered a variety of topics, from the origin of the respective art forms (discussing the mythology, lifestyle, politics of old times) till the present where they are re-inventing themselves. As a result of these discussions a methodology was chalked out as per which all five different artists had to work on each other’s art form with the aim for an ideal fusion of the crafts. Various folk themes were worked upon by the artists so that the character of each art from was well understood and represented. My role involved the interaction with the participating artists of different folk arts, making on-site notes/ videos/ clicking photos of their art forms and practices while they work laboriously to innovate their art forms as per the methodology chalked down by Ajit Rao. In this whole process, I also used to assist these artists in their craftwork which not only gave me an opportunity to learn their art practices but also provided me with a better understanding of their social values, religious customs and economics shaping their lifestyle. After the completion of the workshop I was involved in the documentation of a report on the same, under the guidance of Dr. Shikha Jain (director of DRONAH).

The word ‘Sparsh’ means a sense of touch (contact) in Sanskrit language. Sparsh allows the morphogenesis of incredibly complex process which transform the fertilize egg into a bunch of cells, and which by themselves develops into bones and muscle. Certain cells come together pulsating to become a heart, and slowly without any divine intervention a single cell becomes a baby. ‘Sparsh’ is the sensational exchange of matter clubbed with emotions which makes us aware of our becoming; be it a becoming of foetus, becoming a baby or even becoming a mother. During this whole process there are innumerable no of contacts that are felt and observed wherein an IVF specialist can act as a mediator in determining these contacts. Thus, the aim of Sparsh (the IVF service center) would not only be to treat the patients successfully and deliver a healthy baby but also to guide the customer about their condition and its treatment with the best possible medical supervision and services.
