‘ Tis The Season: Holiday Tips for Pets Before you dress that turkey, or put up decorations, the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA reminds pet owners to take extra precautions with their four-legged friends this holiday season. As yummy as holiday feasts are for humans, not all foods are meant for pet consumption. Any change in your pet’s diet can cause indigestion. Turkey bones
can easily splinter and obstruct a dog’s digestive system. Onions can cause anemia in dogs while chocolate, depending
on the amount ingested, can be poisonous to both cats and dogs. If you give pets leftovers, skimp on the rich sauces and spices and load up on vegetables as a healthier alternative. Avoid sweets made with xylitol, an artificial sweetener, as well. Always seek immediate veterinary medical attention if your pet has an adverse reaction to foods. Stop by the new Shelter Shop opening later this year in our Animal Care Center to stock up on special treats for your pets, kosher foods, toys, clothing and much more! Pet proofing your home can prevent serious injuries. Place ornaments higher up out of your pet’s reach. Secure Christmas trees away from furniture to prevent pets from jumping on them. Garland and tinsel can be dangerous if ingested; consider replacing them with bows and ribbons. As beautiful as Poinsettias, holly berries (continued on back page)
compassion and care for all animals
leader of the pack The Animal Care Center is nearing completion! The brick and mortar expansion of the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA underlines the growth of our programs that will bring animal welfare to a new level. We will now be able to provide expanded services and new services to help keep animals in their home and out of shelters. Our goal is multifaceted. PHS wants to end the tragedy of pet overpopulation of adoptable animals and keep pets in their homes. We want our services to be accessible to anyone who needs them and we want to promote compassion and care for all animals. The new state-of-the-art public spay/neuter clinic will be open 5 days a week. If people live outside of our service cities and want to bring their pets to the new clinic for spay/neuter surgery, they will be eligible for a small surcharge. Our vaccination clinics will be more frequent and will continue to be open to all dogs and cats. Our dog daycare will benefit pet owners who may work long hours and want to guarantee that their dogs are exercised and enriched while in a supervised, safe environment. The Shelter Shop will have food, leashes, toys and merchandise for all animal lovers. What you spend here stays here—profits help to fund our animal care programs. All of this is easily accessible! Our underground parking lot and location near public transportation make PHS easy to reach. This is an auspicious day for animals, but there is more work to do to ensure a humane community. PHS is fortunate to have a generous community that cares about animals. We look forward to working with you in the future and together continuing to better the lives of animals. We can’t do all we do without you.
For the animals.

Community heroes A Legacy of Giving Back National Charity League is a national philanthropic organization, comprised of mothers (Patronesses) and daughters (Ticktockers), which promotes three principles: leadership, community service and cultural awareness. Active in 23 states with 185 chapters and more than 50,000 members, the NCL makes a huge impact in local communities nationwide. Girls start in seventh grade and graduate from the organization as high school seniors. Their Six-Year Plan uses curricula focused on personal growth, college preparatory skills, professional development, to name a few. However, the crux of NCL is volunteerism. “Volunteerism is how we give back,” says Paula Knop, President of the NCL Pasadena Chapter. “It begins a lifelong path for giving back.” NCL has a legacy of giving back to the community. The very first chapter was founded in Los Angeles in 1925. The San Marino chapter was founded in the 1950s followed by the Pasadena Chapter in 1998. The members contribute more than 18,000 hours every year! “We have women who’ve had their daughters go through the program,” adds Jenny Uriarte, Philanthropy Liaison for NCL San Marino Chapter.
Local NCL Inc. volunteers can be found at many places around the area, from Club 21, The Almansor Center and Kidspace Children’s Museum to Crowell Public Library, Pasadena Senior Center and Huntington Hospital. During the holiday season, members partner with USC to give away gift bags to lowincome families. The Ticktockers even make cat beds and dog biscuits for the animals here at the shelter, as well as help at the Wiggle Waggle Walk and San Marino Motor Classic! To congratulate the young women’s accomplishments, NCL organizers produce an annual debutante ball or gala, which highlights all of their hard work. At that time, the incoming class is also presented and a passing of the baton to a new generation begins. NCL also operates Main Street Attraction, a thrift shop in Alhambra. One-hundred percent of the proceeds go toward college scholarships for the girls. NCL, Inc. is our Community Hero because of its legacy of promoting community service through empowering young people. Local area chapters are looking to expand in the near future, too. What a wonderful way to continue giving back! To learn more about NCL, Inc. visit www.nationalcharityleague.org.

Instead of spending time in crowded stores, give a gift in honor or memory of a special person or pet that has touched your heart this year. PHS
will mail a personalized holiday card letting your loved one know a gift has been made. Many animals will come to PHS this season in immediate need of warmth, food, shelter and medical treatment. Your gift will make it possible for the animals to be loved and cared for while waiting for their forever families to take them home. The Pasadena Humane Society is so grateful for your much needed support. Let us help you make a gift to honor or memorialize a special person or pet in one of these convenient ways; contact Melissa Fuentes, Development Coordinator at 626.792.7151 ext. 130 or email at mfuentes@phsspca.org , visit our website at www.pasadenahumane.org, or just come on in!

Thank you to everyone who raised funds towards our goal of $400,000 that will help animals in our community receive the care that they need, reunite them with their families or find the homes they deserve. Thousands of animal lovers and their canine companions attended the event, held at Brookside Park on September 29th. Everyone involved enjoyed the community dog walk, celebrity guests and dogs, fun contests, agility and police K-9 shows and our signature Pet Expo.
This was made possible by the amazing support of all of our donors, fundraisers, sponsors and volunteers. Thank you for making another Wiggle Waggle Walk a big win for all of the animals!
